Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum is a grand and ornately designed complex located in Nanjing, China. The mausoleum pays tribute to Dr. Sun Yat-sen, one of the founders of modern China. The site features a steep staircase leading to the impressive structure, which was developed between 1926 and 1929. The picturesque region symbolizes Dr. Sun Yat-sen's dedication to the Chinese people and their struggle for independence.
An awe-inspiring historical site! Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum is a beautifully designed monument dedicated to the founding father of modern China. The architecture is grand, and the view from the top of the hill is stunning, with Nanjing spread out below. The peaceful surroundings and serene atmosphere make it a perfect place for reflection and learning about China’s revolutionary history. A must-visit for history buffs and anyone exploring Nanjing!

It was a great experience and place to visit during my visit to Nanjing, Dr. Sun Yat Sen is the Father on Nation for Chinese people. Very clean place, well organised, no entry fee for locals and foreign tourists, a must visit place in China.
Firoz S — Google review
Great place to visit in nanjing. Tickets for foreignerd can be purchased at the tourist information center near KFC. Food stores are available before the entrance of mausoleum. The walk upward is tiring, the stairs does not look steep due to multiple landings but I got tired walking upward. Beautiful view of the city from the top. The mausoleum is beautifully designed but picture taking is not allowed inside.
John P — Google review
Nice to visit in late Oct where the weather is just below 20C, the Mausoleum is majestically huge and has a very view at the top, you will need to pre book for free using wechat app.
Will T — Google review
A beautiful scenic view. The stairs aren’t so bad as they look initially. The actual mausoleum was closed for conservation or something when I visited but it’s still a good place to go. At the base there are drink vending machines, coffee shops and tourist shops. It’s extremely busy even on a week day so I recommend to book in advance online on the WeChat mini program - you can scan a QR code at the main park entrance before you get there.

great historical monument to visit. learn about the founder of modern china. 10 yuan
Tian S — Google review
Historical landmark with lots of stairs. Building was undergoing restoration January 2025, so was unfortunately covered by scaffolding, but could still enter the Memorial Hall with Sun Yat Sen's statue. Bit of a rigorous climb, with very nice views at the top...saw some kids slide down the slopes beside the stairs on the way back down!
5H1 N — Google review
I visited the Nanjing Zhongshan Mausoleum and was truly impressed by its historical significance and stunning beauty. The mausoleum, dedicated to Dr. Sun Yat-sen, is located in a peaceful area surrounded by lush greenery and offers a beautiful view of the Nanjing City. The architecture is magnificent, with grand stairways leading up to the main hall, and the entire site is well preserved The journey up to the mausoleum is a bit of a hike, but the panoramic views and serene atmosphere make it worthwhile. A peaceful, scenic experience in Nanjing.

Nanjing Confucius Temple-The Qinhuai River Scenic Area

Nanjing Confucius Temple-The Qinhuai River Scenic Area is a significant site dedicated to the revered Chinese philosopher, Confucius. It was constructed in 1034 during the Song Dynasty and consists of three parts: the Temple, Jiangnan Gongyuan, and Xuegong. Confucius' teachings on social virtues and ethics are celebrated here.
Large scenic area with Confucius Temple, Imperial Examination Hall, lots of stores, restaurants, and has a boat tour of the canals. Definitely a must visit when in Nanjing. Crowded, because it is popular. Very lit up at night, which may not be preferable for some.
5H1 N — Google review
Nestled on the picturesque north bank of the Qinhuai River, in Nanjing’s historic Qinhuai District 🕰️ Timing & Entry Shops/restaurants: ~10:00–22:00; temple complex: ~08:00–21:00 Access to Temple premises and riverfront free, but access to Dacheng Hall & museums costs ~¥30/person 🏛️ Highlights Dacheng Hall houses the largest Confucius statue and vibrant murals—an inspiring centerpiece Historical gems: Lingxing Gate, Screen Wall, Kuixing Pavilion, Jiangnan Examination Hall (largest imperial exam hall) River cruises along the scenic Qinhuai River add romantic vibes—especially in the evening, under lantern glow Picturesque cobblestone streets lit by lanterns, surrounded by social and cultural hotspot At night, the area transforms into a 🔥 lively scene with lantern-lit boats, performances, and bustling energy. 🍜 Tips & Local Finds Food caution: Tourist traps are common—seek out local-favorite spots like Lotus Lake (wontons, sticky-rice), Aerospace Buns, or hidden gems like Wang Jianfa’s Best times: Visit evenings for atmosphere; spring Lantern Festival brings the magnificent Qinhuai Lantern Fair—a must-see Allocate 2–3 hours for temple, museum, river cruise, and souvenir stroll; more time if eating or exploring nearby streets
Sudhir P — Google review
Unlike thousands of other temples, this is a good one to see at night as it has lots of lights, dance performances, and a labyrinth of shops with souvenirs all around. Take a lot of pictures. Prepare yourself for crowds inside and outside this temple area. It's very popular! The Fuzi Miao area is a must for tourists to Nanjing. It has become the city's prime tourist attraction with souvenir shops and restaurants at every corner. Expect a ton of visitors as this is the quintessential Nanjing experience. A super busy and crowded place! I visited this area and it's too attractive and funny. Too many things to see! Too many restaurants and street food to try! Too many souvenirs to choose and buy! The traditional culture is well preserved here although there are many commercial activities including boat tours and traditional costumes hiring and phototaking. The place is very clean.
Andrea V — Google review
Very busy and very noisy especially at nighttime. Good sightseeing shopping and eating. See lots of ladies dress up in traditional costumes.
Chris P — Google review
Nanjing Confucius Temple is one of the most spectacular ancient buildings I have ever visited. When I walked into the historic temple, I seemed to feel the atmosphere of ancient literati. We also tasted duck blood vermicelli soup, salted duck, and other local snacks, which tasted great. So many people here! The scenic spot is very large and spectacular, and I spent an afternoon walking around. The night view of Nanjing Confucius Temple is also beautiful, with colorful lights and many snacks in the alleys. I visited the ancient imperial examination ground. Many colorful lanterns were hanging on both sides of the road, which looked very festive. Worth a visit!
GTW I — Google review
Many people will tell you that a trip to Nanjing is incomplete without a visit to the Confucius Temple at Fuzimao. They may be right but in my case, I guess I can be quite satisfied with an incomplete trip. Don't get me wrong, the temple complex is impressive and ancient and certainly worthy of a visit. But the Temple street turned me off to the whole experience. Not unusually in China (or anywhere, I suspect) a major tourist attraction brings souvenir shops, overpriced restaurants, hawkers and the like out of the woodwork. But in my view, Nanjing Temple Street takes first place in the tourist hassle sweepstakes. In addition, fighting crowds to walk the street, fighting crowds to get a ticket, and fighting crowds inside the temple meant that for us, we were ready to leave before we arrived. Pro Tip Word to the wise (from the not so)....arrive early, get photos early and avoid eating in the tourist area unless you enjoy paying more for lower quality food
Geoff — Google review
This place is great place to see more about the origins of Confucius. This temple is very popular among the people who are in school and who wish to pass their exams. Its a form of respect that everyone of any age comes to. It does feel a bit like a museum temple but it still a great place to come visit, especially when in Nanjing. I came in June and again in October and the difference is night and day. They're open until 6pm but will extend their hours during special holidays because a lot of Chinese come and visit the temple. This temple is also at the epicenter of the Nanjing Boardwalk that has lots of things to do for shopping and eating and also sight seeing.
Dulce K — Google review
The biggest Confucius temple in Nanjing. Surrounded by historical structures which is also the largest old street zone in China. Walking by the street, you may feel the ancient vibe. It’s basically a night market. You can buy some special local product here before you leave Nanjing.

City Wall of Nanjing

Mentioned on
14 lists
Nanjing's City Wall, the world's longest brick city wall, was built during the Ming dynasty to protect the city from invaders. Stretching over 15.5 miles and featuring 13 gates, this four-layered fortress is made up of the Outer City, Inner City, Imperial City, and Palace City. Each of its 300 million bricks is inscribed with its maker's name and origin.
A breathtaking piece of history! The City Wall of Nanjing is one of the best-preserved ancient walls in China, offering stunning views of the city and the Yangtze River. Walking along the wall feels like stepping back in time, with its massive bricks and historical inscriptions. The peaceful atmosphere makes it a perfect spot for a scenic stroll, especially at sunrise or sunset. A must-visit for history lovers and anyone looking to experience Nanjing’s rich heritage!
Neel ( — Google review
Strolling along the Nanjing City Wall near Jiming Temple, gorgeous, steeped in history, and full of charm. Built during the Ming Dynasty, the wall stretches more than 35 km, and this section still feels so alive. One detail I loved: every brick is stamped with the name of the maker or supervisor, a fascinating way they tracked quality centuries ago. The walk is long, but totally worth it, especially if you go at sunset, when you’ll catch stunning views over Xuanwu Lake, which sits right beside the wall. The soft golden light reflecting off the water makes it magical. While it’s not as grand as the Great Wall of China, this one feels personal to Nanjing, with a strong local character and equally breathtaking views. To my surprise, there’s even a small museum on top of the wall, showcasing the wall’s history, architecture, and restoration efforts. It’s a nice bonus, adding depth to the experience. There’s also a souvenir merchant up there too, full of cute and unique items to bring home. And don’t miss the free stamp station to mark your visit, perfect for travel journals!

Looks like a less grand version of the one in Xi'An, this 古城墙 with its unique 4-tier structure, is said to be the longest brick city wall in the world at 35km. I'm not sure how that works against the Great Wall, perhaps the longest complete wall. Entrance fees at RMB30 per person, no pre-booking required, in fact it's probably the least crowded attraction all week. There's a small museum at the top that provides the history of this wall, from how it was constructed to how it was restored. Along the path up, look down and you'll find some original bricks with engraving, indicating the person responsible for making and laying the bricks in that section back then. You also get a superb panoramic view of Xuanwu Lake from this vantage point.
Daphne Y — Google review
Walking along the Nanjing City Wall is like stepping back in time. Built over 600 years ago, this well-preserved wall offers a glimpse into Nanjing’s rich history. The structure itself is impressive, with massive bricks—some still bearing ancient inscriptions! The scenery is just as breathtaking. From the top, you get stunning views of the city, Xuanwu Lake, and the surrounding landscapes, making it a perfect spot for photography. The walk is peaceful but can be a bit tiring, especially on warmer days, so comfortable shoes are a must. But every step is worth it! If you love history, architecture, or just a good walk, this place is a must-visit.
Khairur A — Google review
Climb up the 600-year-old Ming City Wall, and run your fingertips over the mottled bricks and stones. The ripples of Xuanwu Lake and the outline of Zijin Mountain extend under your feet. Every brick engraved with the name of the craftsman tells the vicissitudes and romance of Jinling City. The ticket for the walled city is 15 yuan. Here you can see Xuanwu Lake and Jiming Temple. It is recommended to visit at dusk to see the sunset gilding the ancient city wall.
Hoai V — Google review
This Nanjing City Wall offers breathtaking panoramic views—soaring above the city with a refreshing breeze at the top. Perfect for a peaceful stroll while soaking in history and scenery. A must-visit for anyone craving a blend of culture and natural beauty!

The Presidential Palace is a historic Baroque building that has been restored after World War II. The compound, which dates back over 600 years, features lush inner gardens and a blend of Chinese and European architecture. It played a significant role in the 20th century as the government headquarters for prominent figures such as Dr. Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek.
Historical office and halls where Sun Yat Sen and Chiang Kai Shek worked. Integral part of Nanjing history when it served as the capital of the Republic of China, after the end of the Qing Dynasty. Suggest allowing about 3 hours to walk around the compound, more if you plan to read everything. Would recommend booking tickets in advance, since they can sell out pretty quickly.
5H1 N — Google review
Affordable tickets with the standard available discounts as everywhere in China. Can buy online in advance to save time. Definitely can’t miss a visit to this place when you’re in Nanjing. Very interesting history spanning ancient China, the taping rebellion, WW1/2, the ROC and the PRC years. Very beautiful blend of old and modern architecture. Probably worth 2-3 hours here to walk around the various buildings, gardens, etc. Many of the signs are only in Chinese at the various exhibitions around the palace.

So many people visit this very historical place, took awhile to get in thou - the first government of China (Republic of China) after the Qing dynasty. The president’s office looks clean and tidy n very very old looking... The garden is very beautiful, and lots of people are chilling here. There is also a souvenir shop in this place n a book store n some eatery...

I recently visited 南京总统府, and I found the experience to be both interesting and enlightening. The site holds significant historical value, as it was once the workplace of notable leaders such as 孫中山, 蔣介石, and 洪秀全. Exploring the various areas of the complex allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of their roles and contributions to China's history. What struck me most was how the exhibits shed light on the struggles and challenges these leaders faced during a tumultuous period in the country from the 1900s to the 1950s. The stories and artifacts provided valuable insights into the political landscape of China during that era, making the visit not only informative but also thought-provoking. I highly recommend 南京总统府 to anyone interested in Chinese history and the pivotal figures who shaped the nation.

So many people visit in the weekend, omg lol 😂 This is a very historical place - the first government of China (Republic of China) 🇹🇼 after the Qing dynasty. The president’s office looks clean and tidy. The garden 🪴 is very beautiful, and lots of people are chilling here. There is also a souvenir shop in this place, and a man is writing ✍️ traditional Chinese characters, which is impressive. 🤩

Historical place in Nanjing that's not to be missed. Many parts of the palace ground really present an authentic feel of a era gone-by. Beautiful lake view and long passageways with full canopy tall trees along both sides given good shades.
Chan S — Google review
for 40rmb its Poor, you need a valid ID (passports for foreigners) to buy tickets (Photo of Passports is fine too), Nothing inside screams out presidential Palace to me Just a Large residenctial area. mostly a garden and small gift shops. Its pretty boring and you should spend most of your nanjing time doing other activties or gardens rather than this place. Its basically a Garden with a small museum section. There are baggage storages inside as soon as you enter the gate, incase if your doing this before you leave NKG or dont have much time.

Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders

War memorial
Sights & Landmarks
The Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders is a somber museum that commemorates the tragic events of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre. This memorial was built to honor over 300,000 victims who were slaughtered during this dark period in history. The exhibits include artifacts from the era such as weapons, eyewitness testimony, and photographs, documenting the horrors of the massacre.
A deeply moving and powerful memorial. The Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre is a solemn place that preserves an important part of history. The exhibits are well-presented, with photographs, personal accounts, and artifacts that provide a heartbreaking yet essential insight into the tragedy. The atmosphere is respectful and reflective, reminding visitors of the importance of peace and humanity. A must-visit for those who want to understand history and pay tribute to the victims.
Neel ( — Google review
The Nanjing Massacre is a historical event that is not as well-known in the West as the atrocities committed by Nazi Germany, and in my opinion, it tends to be overlooked. The Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall is a must-see when you are in Nanjing. The only downside is how crowded it can get, which can make it hard to fully immerse yourself in the exhibits as you follow the constant flow of people. Admission is free, but foreign visitors should remember to bring their passport, as it's required for entry.
Tiago G — Google review
A place to remember how cruel the war was, is probably the only place in China where you have thousands of visitors and yet the atmosphere remains heavy and silent. The hall exhibits why Japanese attacked China, the local life back then, how brutatlly thousands and thousands of Nanjing citizens were killed, how the local and foreigners survived in Nanjing, leaft the place with a heavy heart. Do book in advance on Wechat, the open slot easily get fill up.
Will T — Google review
Must visit this memorial hall if you are visiting Nanjing. No entry tickets needed but you need to make an online booking via WeChat - It can be tricky to make a reservation for foreigners. Alternatively, you can try walk-in and show your passports to the manual counter. We were allowed to enter without reservation.
Yee A — Google review
A sad place to feel the miserable life of victims during invasion by Japanese soldiers in World War II. The war is cruel and the residents are innocent. It is a lesson learnt that peace is priceless and we should treasure the moments we have in peaceful time and don’t forget the pain the victims suffered during war.
Michael H — Google review
The statues outside at the beginning are just grotesque. I get that's the point but I found them to be in poor taste in my opinion. However the inside is very well done and powerful, especially the first room with portraits of the victims. The museum emphasizes peace, which is good as it easily could have fallen into anti-Japanese fervor. I'm relieved to report it is a mostly objective museum about a very dark period of modern history. If we don't learn about the atrocities of the past, we're doomed to repeat them. Unfortunately these kind of atrocities are not confined to the past. Horrific events like the Nanjing Massacre are still happening today in places like Gaza, Darfur, Ukraine, etc. It is up to us to stop war crimes and genocides from continuing to happen.
M. V — Google review
The Memorial Hall is a must visit in Nanjing, but we were disappointed to learn that entry requires advance booking via WeChat—which isn’t accessible for international visitors without WeChat Pay. A heads-up for fellow travelers: arrange tickets beforehand or check alternative options to avoid missing out.
00Y — Google review
A must visit Museum when you visit Nanjing, a recent memory shared amongst the people in remembrance of atrocities committed to the people of Nanjing. As you walk in you can see the frames of most victims of the Nanjing Massacre and also those whom had survived and still live on with the memories. You need to book in advance (Free) but recommend to donate some money when you enter. *Foreigners will require a Passport to enter*. It is truly a sad place, the museum is very detailed with many monuments, pictures and archives exhibited for people to see. “remember history and cherish peace, so as to create a better future”

Xuanwu Lake, situated in Nanjing, is a historic and picturesque destination dating back to 182 AD. It serves as a serene escape from the urban hustle and bustle of the city. The lake is surrounded by the iconic Nanjing Wall and boasts lush gardens with various flora such as willows, cherry blossoms, lilies, and maples. Visitors can find peaceful spots for picnics or relaxation amidst the natural beauty.
A peaceful escape in the heart of Nanjing! Xuanwu Lake is a beautiful place to relax, with scenic walking paths, charming pavilions, and lush greenery. The lake offers stunning views of the city skyline, especially at sunrise and sunset. You can take a boat ride, explore the small islands, or simply enjoy a leisurely walk. It’s a perfect spot for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone looking for a break from the busy city life!

Walked the 10k loop. Get away from the main gate areas and it gets a little quieter. Spoiled though with piped-in music (for why?). Shady walks, lovely lotus fields and greenery.
Malcolm A — Google review
A big lake turned into a tourist scenic area. While it does not look bad, due to Chinese smog the scenery is a little less beautiful. The scenic area has some sites which I personally think is not that impressive. Still it’s a nice place to spend some time.
Allen L — Google review
It's an urban park in the downtown. Definitely a great place to capture the city skyline, you may also just rent a boat and ride it to spot the whole city skyline. The only problem is that the area is a bit crowded.
Jacky T — Google review
A perfect morning escape at Xuanwu Lake! The crisp, cool breeze and peaceful surroundings made for such a refreshing walk. Ideal for clearing your mind or starting the day with calm energy. After your morning walk at Xuanwu Lake, head over to the nearby Nanjing City Wall! It’s the perfect follow-up—historic views with that same refreshing outdoor vibe.
00Y — Google review
Going to Jiming Temple always involves a side trip to Xuanwu Lake. Or sometimes it's the other way around. I love Nanjing as a city, open and tolerant, with places and people I love. I have stayed in this city for 8 years, and when I have the opportunity, I always like to come to Xuanwu Lake to take a walk, blow the wind, and relax. This season's wind is a little cool, the water of the lake is a little cold. The park was as crowded as ever. In Nanjing, Xuanwu Lake is still to walk a few more times. Feel the passage of time from summer to winter quickly.

Nice park in the heart of the city. Went there for a morning run, plenty of other folks running, walking there. Clean, crisp air.

Went with my girlfriend today and spent a few hours there. We took a little tour bus for ¥30 each and it lasted about 20-30min I think. They stopped twice for us to get out and the 2nd time was when the tour was over. We walked around the gardens and island all the way to where there was a pagoda. They have boat rides which were too much money and you have to pay to go on the wall which we weren't gonna pay for. Plenty of little souvenir stands and places to eat and drink.

It is one of the largest museums in China, with a history dating back to 1933. The museum's exhibits include ancient civilization, treasures, calligraphy, paintings, cutting-edge technology, as well as galleries dedicated to Nanjing's past and old folklore.
One of the best museums in China! Nanjing Museum is rich in history, culture, and art, offering a deep dive into China’s past. Best of all, entry is free! A must-visit for history lovers and anyone exploring Nanjing.

I like the place, it is huge! I actually got VR which costs around 60¥ but there's no English. The staff knew I am not Chinese for sure but she didn't mention to me. I so wasted my 60¥ for not understanding but yeah I get to imagine from the video? I recommend to book in advance, go to wechat and search 南京博物馆.
Cholthisha N — Google review
Fantastic and huge museum. Free but you must reserve tickets in advance on wechat (very difficult, make sure to do it 7 days in advance as they get booked up). Make sure to bring your passport. Very little English, bring a translator app. I spent 6 hours here, could have spent more. There's 3 buildings: 1. North building has 6 amazing galleries of regional history from dinasours and prehistory through Qing. Highlight of Jaingsu. 2. West building is mostly just 20th cent artists (skippable imo), but the basement is a huge recreated Republican-era Nanjing Street. Every storefront is an actual shop you can buy things at. Feels a bit like a commercialized version of the Japanese Edo museums. No historical artifacts or interpretation - 100% Disney-style, but still highly recommended. There's even a theater with live performances (English subtitles). 3. Northwest buildings holds 15 temporary exhibition galleries. The first floor seemed to hold the blockbuster one (Oct 2025 was a huge encyclopedic gallery of Persian artifacts, really delightful). Higher floors seemed to hold thematic displays of Ming/Qing artifacts, likely ftom the Republican-era collection left behind in 1949. There's a cafe on the top floor along with a nice terrace. There's paid luggage storage before entry, may need a Chinese phone number though.

This place is huge and very popular among local and foreign tourists, there are many sectors to visitors, and the coverage of exhibits is huge from dynasty to more recent. You can spend a full day here if you pay detail to every exhibits. Free entrance but do book early in Wechat as slots get fill up quickly.
Will T — Google review
The museum itself is fine but the ticketing process is insane. My Chinese wife bought me a ticket in advance and we waited in the long line like everybody else. But when we got to the entry, the guard stopped me and made my wife go stand in a different long line with my passport while I had to stay in the front of the original line directly in everyone's way (there was nowhere else to go and it's what the guard told me to do). For someone with severe anxiety like myself, this was a nightmare for me. I already had a ticket, China often makes things intentionally difficult for foreigners and it is incredibly frustrating because I didn't do anything wrong. The exhibits are good but there is very little information about them, even in Chinese (and even less in English). They really on the audio guide (20 RMB) to provide context, but it is very quiet so with how loud the crowds are, it is almost inaudible. Oh and the crowds here are awful, even on weekdays. On weekends or public holidays, forget about even trying to get in.
M. V — Google review
An interesting places which contains a huge historical things and history. That's so interesting if you can understand as it's mostly in Chinese. My friend told me the English version can't describe the same meaning as the Chinese ver. They also have headset to hear the explanation. And a lot people come there to see things. Make sure to bring your passport or ID card or at least register it in advance. If not might take some more time to register. Free fee.
Đ_Quyên ( — Google review
Free to enter but must pre-book entry tickets via their mini app in Wechat. Tickets are open 1 week prior at 6pm. They have a free guided tour, capped at 30pax, that starts at 10am (or 2pm), ear pieces are given out 20 mins prior. As foreigners, we had to go to the ticket counter in the History Hall 历史馆 to exchange for a physical ticket. We were there by 930am but by then the queue for the free tour was already quite long, in fact we missed the 10am tour by 4 persons. Luckily that day they had another one at 1030am. You can also opt to pay RMB150 per pax for a private guide or RMB30 to rent a pre-recorded audio guide. But my preference is always for a live guide. This is the first of 2 博物院 (instead of 博物馆) in China, covering 6 halls, consisting 18 pieces of 镇院之宝, with the prime spot going to the 金兽 (Golden Creature), exhibited exclusively in the Special Exhibit Hall. The 1.5 hours tour took us through only the History Hall 历史馆 and for most of it, we could only hear but not really see as the crowd was too crazy. Most of the time I could only see the item after the guide has finished the narrative and on the move to the next stop. It was made worse by 'free-riders' who didn't join the queue for the free tour and was just sticking close to the guide to listen in, thereby blocking our view. The History Hall is the largest and even the 1.5 hr tour couldn't bring us through everything here. It would have been a more enjoyable experience with lesser crowd, but I really don't think that's ever possible in China given that I was there on a supposedly low season, week-day morning. Nonetheless, still highly recommended as a must-visit place in Nanjing.

Huge and full of important historic objects, albeit not as variegated as I expected, but still of immense cultural importance and age, definitely a must see when in Nanjing. However, do note that getting in may be complicated on your own for foreign visitors. I was taken there with a cohort of 4 my fellow writers when we were guests at UNESCO City of Literature Residence for Foreign Authors, so we even had some shortcut, possibly because of the early booking or something, but we still ahd to wait a good half hour to get in, and that is in November, not a major tourist trip month.

Nanjing's Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, built in 1405 for Ming Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, is a massive complex featuring pathways and statues. The mausoleum is part of the scenic area on Purple Mountain, where visitors can pay tribute to martyrs, enjoy the flowers and scenery, appreciate the beauty of the ancient capital's mountains and rivers, and experience the tranquility of the royal garden.
Mausoleum for the emperor Zhu Yuanzhuang. Burial mound is actually underneath the hill behind the big gate house, which can be climbed. There is a small display inside. Preceded by a tree lined path flanked with statues of animals and generals. Tickets required to enter this area

Great place for historical visit. The place is a restoration but still a good visit if you are in nanjing. The mausoleum is massive and the walls are high.

The Xiaoling Tomb of the Ming Dynasty is the most important tomb of the Ming and Qing emperors in China. It is located on the southern slope of Purple Mountain, east of the historic center of Nanjing. Good Visit during China Tour

Amazing place, nice walking route, good experience to visit a famous ancient emperor in China.
Michael H — Google review
It was a unbelievable nice experience to see, how such a nice place can be built by human beings several hundred years ago. For me it is still a outstanding performance to erect such a nice place without having high technology machines on hand as we have them today. Appreciate the kindness of the local people and would love to come back to China as soon as possible.
Moritz G — Google review
A huge burial ground which you need to be prepared to do a long walk. Beautiful and massive tomb though especially the awesome Stair! The down side is the package for getting in, was ridiculous. Just a sight seeing tour. Just a one time visit trip.

Jiming Temple, also known as Ancient Jiming Temple, is a serene Buddhist temple located near Xuanwu Lake in Nanjing. Dating back to the Western Jin Dynasty, it is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the city. The temple boasts tranquil grounds and is renowned for its well-known vegetarian restaurant. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere while exploring the temple's historical significance and taking in the beautiful surroundings. It's a must-visit destination for those interested in experiencing traditional Buddhist culture and architecture.
Beautiful place, feels very calm and peaceful here 😌 I went there early in the morning around 8:30 and only a few people were there. After 9:00 it starts becoming busier. You can buy a ticket at the entrance (10 yuan). After you enter if you turn right and go all the way along the wall you can find a pond, it can also be accessed from the top. Pictures can be taken only outside, inside is not allowed. There is a delicious vegan canteen at the top with a nice view of the mountain ⛰️ Highly recommend to visit!
Artem L — Google review
I did not enter the gate but I heard the comments that the temple is not worth paying to visit. If you just want to take nice photos, can consider visit the 古城門 in the north of the temple, just 10 mins walk. You can take photos of the temple on the wall.
Michael H — Google review
A serene escape in downtown Nanjing! This 1,700-year-old Buddhist temple offers stunning city views, especially during cherry blossom season. The golden rooftops against modern skyscrapers create perfect photo contrasts. Entrance ¥15 (includes incense)
Hoai V — Google review
A peaceful escape right in the city, full of history, culture, and a very calm, sacred atmosphere. I went there during the summer, and although the heat and humidity were quite intense, the experience was still worth it. The entrance fee was just 10 yuan, which I found very reasonable. I bought a jade bracelet from one of the small shops inside the temple complex. It wasn’t too expensive, just a nice souvenir to brought home with. The temple was quite crowded, especially near the main prayer areas, but it didn’t ruin the experience for me. People were generally respectful and quiet. The lady at the gate didn’t speak fluent English, but she was super kind and tried her best to help. I recommend having a translator app ready just in case, but honestly, navigating the temple is pretty intuitive. Overall, Jiming Temple is a must visit if you're in Nanjing, especially if you love spiritual or historical places If I'm going back to China again, I'll definitely visit more of Jiming temple

Jiming Temple 鸡鸣寺 - 古寺南朝480寺之首. Apparently the temple is filled with Cherry Blossoms but the season has passed by the time we arrived. It seems to be a popular place for OOTD shots especially with their bright yellow (royal) walls. Perched above the hill, one gets a good view of the city, old city wall and the Xuanwu Lake just below. Entrance fee RMB10 per adult, bought at the door and comes with 3 joss sticks that one can redeem at the top of the temple to give prayers.
Daphne Y — Google review
One of the nicest temple in China that I've visited that doesn't cost alot. Entrance fee is merely 10YUAN. Architecture wise, it's a beautiful temple that requires you to climb up. Not so elderly or disabled friendly. Kinda commercialised buts that's the trend now, else how would the temple survive? There is a vegetarian restaurant at the end of the walk and price is quite reasonable. If you manage to find a tblr near the window, will have a good view of the famous wall as well.
Mesh P — Google review
It's a nice enough temple and it's in a very scenic location, next to the city walls and very close to Xuanwu Lake. But you can see the entire thing in about 30-40 minutes and it gets very crowded, especially on weekends. Tickets are cheap but you have to do it all through QR code so it isn't very international tourist-friendly.
M. V — Google review
This serene temple, nestled just beside the Nanjing City Wall, rewards visitors with a peaceful retreat—but be prepared for a bit of a hike to reach it. Perfect for quiet reflection or a scenic break!

Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge

Mentioned on

Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, opened in 1968, is a 5,171-foot double-decked road-rail truss bridge with a pedestrian path. It was the third bridge over the Yangtze and was a significant achievement of Chinese engineering. The bridge has historical significance and is also known for the heroic actions of Chen Si, who has saved numerous lives on the bridge.
This communist monument was built 65 years ago and looks really impressive. We were too late and arrived when it was dark already but it was actually great. Those old flower-like street lamps, with the lights of the trains going through, it really looks magical at night. There is a small pathway on the south side from Baotaqiao W street that is built for enjoying the view on the bridge, which is also open at night. Fully recommended to visit if you are in Nanjing.
Mugi Y — Google review
Amazing and historical bridge. It was built over 65 years, a milestone in the history of People Republic of China as it was crossing the Yangtze River. It is one of the bridges which can serve vehicles and trains. There is a glass bridge near the seafront where you can take nice photos of the bridge and sunset.
Michael H — Google review
Visited during sunset, the bridge, the skyline, and riverbank park made an excellent view. I heard it was one of the first Chinese designed and manufactured infrastructures. It has two passageways, upper for vehicles, lower for trains.
Morris C — Google review
The glass bridge viewing platform is on the south east of the bridge and can be accessed by paths from the Jinchuan River or side roads from Baotaqiao West Street to the water front. This is a great place to visit for an hour or so in the evening with ships passing every minute making a great photo opportunity. There are lots of food vendors nearby.
Shannon S — Google review
It was a quite unique feeling walking along the river bank, but most importantly, crossing it by train!
Anastasia S — Google review
The glass floor path was a convenient location to take pictures. The bridge looked nothing breathtaking.
Tom Y — Google review
This was the first bridge build to cross the Yangtze (Yellow) river. This was build by Chinese workers and engineers, unlike the second bridge that was build in Wuhan and designed and build by Russians. It's a high and long bridge but because of airpollution it is nearly impossible to see the full length and otherside of the river

T T — Google review
This place is a hidden gem in Nanjing city, set in an elevated position on two floors. It features a very nicely furbished ground floor bar/restaurant and an open roof top terrace bar. The beer is excellent and the food ok but as others commented very expensive. I spent a lovely sunny afternoon here in May 2019 on the roof terrace over looking part of the city and watching the world go bye. The only thing that spoilt the experience being that some of the staff ( the younger members) were lazy and quite rude, so different to my experience in almost every other part of this beautiful country they call China.
Ron B — Google review
A large-scale South German or Austrian-style beer hall, complete with staff dressed in traditional attire. The live music adds a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The venue is slightly elevated above the bustling street, and first-time visitors may find the entrance a bit tricky to locate. The beers are excellent—especially the Witzen, which is notably aromatic. Large craft brewing tanks are visible on-site, adding to the authentic feel. However, as with many Chinese CBs, the alcohol content seems lower than indicated—I rarely feel its effect, and this holds true here as well.

Nearby airports

Nanjing Lukou International Airport

Airport
Nanjing Lukou International Airport, situated 35.8 km from Nanjing city, is easily accessible via the Airport Express departing every 30 minutes from Zhonghuamen long-distance passenger depot. Travelers can also reach the airport by metro or bus services like 2, 38, 16, 39, 49, 111 or 116 to Xijie Street stop or Runtai market stop.
Nice airport. Quite convenient checkin process and with facilities Downside: the lounge V9 which I took for AirChina flight it not up to the mark with food menu offered. The gates are quite far from each other and during arrival you may need to walk quite a distance to the baggage carousel area.
K. P — Google review
A modern and well-organized airport! Nanjing Lukou International Airport is clean, spacious, and easy to navigate. The check-in and security processes are generally smooth, and there are plenty of shops and dining options to pass the time. Transportation to the city is convenient, with metro and taxi services readily available. Overall, a pleasant travel experience!
Neel ( — Google review
Domestic flights are on the right and international flights are on the left. The restaurant is on the second floor in the center.
Mylife H — Google review
Lukou International Airport serves as the gateway to the historic city of Nanjing. It was a genuinely pleasant experience travelling in and out of their well-organized, spotless international terminal. The airport provided a seamless immigration process, with attentive, English-speaking staff who were more than willing to assist. During both arrival and departure, we could feel that everyone was doing their utmost to ensure a smooth experience. Notably, there were plenty of open counters for foreign passport holders—a convenience that isn’t always guaranteed at second-tier city airports. When it comes to shopping and dining, the airport offered a decent selection. Duty-free shops featured Chinese liquor, local sweets, perfumes, and a wide variety of souvenirs. These were spread across several locations, making it easy to make a quick stop before boarding. However, I must point out that the dining options in the airside area were noticeably limited compared to those in the check-in zone. Although the Niuroumian restaurant was enjoyable, I recommend having a meal before passing through TSA. Located approximately 40 km south of Nanjing’s city centre and CBD, the airport is around a 40-minute taxi ride away. In addition to taxis, there’s a 50-minute airport bus to Xihuamen and a 35-minute metro ride to Nanjing South Station. That said, I found the taxi more comfortable, thanks to the dedicated highway that makes road travel considerably efficient. Overall, Lukou International Airport stands proudly as the southern capital’s primary gateway for international visitors. It delivers a swift and polished passenger experience, complete with highlights like quality duty-free shops, convenient city access, and spotless facilities. I’m pleased to give NKG Airport a well-earned five stars—with just a bit of room left for improvement.
Chun J — Google review
It was such a good experience. Very clean airport. A little of noisy but it’s okay. Almost feels like international airport although it’s not. It’s domestic airport with international quality.
Md F — Google review
The airport is relatively small in scale, and it is somewhat inconvenient for overnight stays. Since most facilities and the food court close late at night, transit or overnight passengers may find it uncomfortable.

International transfer from Japan doesn't work. They will make you fill out paperwork, then enter China and then check into your next flight. Poorly signposted, terrible communication.
