Historic Walking Areas
Stone Town, also known as Mji Mkongwe, is the historic heart of Zanzibar City in Tanzania. It is situated on the western coast of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago. The area's rich history is reflected in its elaborate doors, coral-built walls, forts and colonial buildings.

Old Fort

Ancient Ruins
Old Fort is a 17th-century structure in Stone Town, built by Omani Arab rulers as a defense against the Portuguese. The fort features striking ramparts and an open-air theatre where nightly entertainment and occasional festivals take place. Visitors can explore market stalls, art exhibitions, and nearby attractions such as the House of Wonders and the Old Dispensary.
Absolutely great place to walk around and do shopping, a lot of spices and they are so cheap, nice places to eat, you can’t get lost in there walking around, friendly people, just take a taxi or if you already have a hired car drive there plenty of free or cheap parking.
Mohamed E — Google review
During the day it's just another beach front walk, but night you get to watch the sunset, and the area transforms into a food market. Try the shawarma stalls, cheap and well worth the money. We really liked the guy asking chicken tikka shawarma. The guys selling mixture of meat and fish stick are more expensive.
Azizul G — Google review
Not really worth the visit, fortunately it's free. There's a story behind the fort's construction, extensions etc which is of minor interest. A few market stalls are set up inside the grounds which don't actually hassle too much. It's all just fairly quiet. Lots of rubbish and rubble strewn around and the remains of a large fire. But this isn't really that different to most villages I've seen on the island.
Gary B — Google review
Free entrance Nice to walk around. Not much to see though. Has a lot of shops, can get nice souvenirs and paintings
Mariam O — Google review
As the name suggests, Old Fort truly lives up to its heritage a city built from stone, rich in history and timeless beauty. Dating back to around the 18th century, this was once the royal palace area, and walking through it feels like stepping into another era. You’ll come across old cannons, gun storage areas, and elevated platforms once used for defense fascinating reminders of the town’s strategic past. There’s also a theater space where performances and cultural plays are held, adding a touch of artistry to the historical setting. One thing that stood out to me and something every cat lover will appreciate is how many beautiful cats freely roam around the gardens. They’re calm, friendly, and almost part of the town’s charm. You can easily spend time just taking photos of the cats, the stone buildings, and the lush gardens around. The view from Stone Town is spectacular, especially facing the ocean. From here, you can spot large ships, ferries, and container vessels gracefully moving across the turquoise water a perfect blend of history meeting modern trade. As the sun sets, Stone Town transforms into a lively scene with its night market. The air fills with the aroma of freshly prepared street food seafood, grilled meat, and local treats. One drink I particularly enjoyed was a refreshing sugarcane juice mixed with ice, made fresh by local vendors. Stone Town is more than just a historic site; it’s a place that combines culture, ocean views, architecture, and authentic street life. Whether you’re exploring during the day or enjoying the lively evenings, it’s a spot that captures the true essence of Zanzibar historic, vibrant, and full of character.

Boat to Prison Island Tour

Mentioned on

Boat tour agency
Embark on the Boat to Prison Island Tour, also known as Changuu Island, for a historical and adventurous experience. Located just 20-30 minutes away from Stone Town, this tour offers a glimpse into the island's dark past as a place where troublesome slaves were held before being traded. Today, it is home to rare Aldabra giant tortoises and boasts beautiful beaches with clear waters perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving.
There is a huge selection of boat services to the island. Safe. Fun. Kind.

Nature & Parks
Jozani Forest, located in Zanzibar's only national park, Jozani-Chwaka Bay, is a compact yet diverse natural wonder. The park boasts lush woods and a variety of wooded habitats, including the largest-surviving stand of mature indigenous forest on the island and extensive mangroves along Chwaka Bay. Spanning over 100km, the area features a unique swamp-forest environment with large moisture-loving trees, stands of palm and ferns.
Saw very cool red colobus monkeys, who can only be found in Zanzibar. They don't mind taking pictures at all. It was quite cool to take a walk down the trail. The forest is all built over corals! Very green. Interesting plants and trees that have medicinal values, well, most of them. The tour guide was very informative.
Rosina S — Google review
This is small forest that we can see the Blue and Red Monkey 🐒 which are one if the rarest spices in the world. There are lots of things to see like Mangrove trees Red, white and black. Crab 🦀 red and black. Different types of trees and some animals.
Sanjayan S — Google review
Beautiful place and our tour guide was so knowledgeable, you also don't need to be fit at all. The walk is slow and easy. Take mosquito spray though, I was eaten alive. I looooved seeing the monkeys play.
Joha — Google review
$12 entrance fee for the shortest route. We had a guide who answered all our questions. The park is protected, and there’s a respectful interaction with the monkeys. The guides take care that touristis keep distance and preserving their natural habitat. All in all, a great experience, not a tourist trap, and definitely money well spent on a UNESCO World Heritage site. We recommend visiting in the afternoon and taking the small tour.
Pauline M — Google review
I had a really good guide and Suleyman seems to be passionated about his job. Of course it's not a jungle like Amazonas or Borneo. But still good place to see more about jungle, wild life and especially to see and learn more about mangroves
B.B. — Google review
I love you cant walk around the forest without a guide. No one is allowed to feed any of the animals which keeps them wild. Good conservation. Educational to go to the mangrove after.
Sharon W — Google review
Might be not my favorite place of visiting. Beautiful-yes, some short knowledge from the guide (who’s assigned to be with every visitor of the forest) regarding the place history, which kind of trees are in there, seeing monkeys, going to mangrove forests. Entrance fee was less than 20$, unfortunately card payment is not available, have to bring cash.
Алеся Ш — Google review
Worth the visit for the Mangroves and red Colobus monkeys. Need to go early to see birds. We were grateful for our guide Ali, who took us away from the other groups which allowed us some special times with the monkeys. Ask for Ali. His English is good, and he speaks some French and German. He's studying Tourism Business and is passionate about his work.

Nungwi Beach, located in the village of Nungwi on Zanzibar island, is a picturesque stretch of white sand along the western coast of the Indian Ocean. It's renowned for its opportunities to swim, snorkel, and dive. The beach offers stunning sunset views that are perfect for capturing Instagram-worthy photos.
Nungwi Beach is pure bliss! Picture-perfect white sand, stunning turquoise waters, and incredible sunsets. It's a little slice of paradise in Zanzibar. ✨
Suraj R — Google review
I spent 4 nights here and I will never set foot here again, or anywhere in Zanzibar again. The beach is absolutely beautiful - the water is gorgeous! However, the beach boys are there all hours of the day disturbing you 24/7. You cannot relax without them hounding you to buy their services or products. I hated every second.
Conan N — Google review
Being there for just few hours but i can tell u that place is paradise, the water is so clean u can drop a coin in the water and still u gonna get it and also it's safe and clean environment
Christopher J — Google review
Lovely beach, perfect for sitting down and enjoying stunning sunsets. It can get a bit crowded depending on the time of day, but it’s still a pleasant spot to relax or go for a swim. The main downside is the frequent presence of Masai and other vendors, who can be quite persistent and approach tourists every few minutes to offer their services — which can somewhat disrupt the experience if you're looking for peace and quiet. That said, it’s still a beautiful beach where you shouldn’t hesitate to settle in, especially if you choose to sit at one of the beachfront restaurants for a more peaceful and comfortable setting. There are plenty of restaurants and resorts along the beach, offering a wide range of options for dining or unwinding, depending on what you're looking for.
Nafissa — Google review
This could be a stunning beach but unfortunately quite a bit of rubbish washes up. The sand is soft and white with stunning water if the seaweed is not washing up or has been cleaned away by hotels. You regularly see fishermen carrying their catch up to restaurants, Food at the beach restaurants is usually very good, a bit pricier than the back streets but still very cheap compared to US prices. You can use US dollars or Tanzanian shillings. You will be hassled by locals trying to make a living from tourists.
Julie P — Google review
This beach offers breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere, but during low tide, the water recedes dramatically, sometimes moving more than 500 meters away from the shore. While this creates fascinating opportunities to explore the exposed seabed and discover marine life, it can make swimming and water-based activities less convenient during certain times of the day. For a more consistent beach experience with waters closer to the shore, it is recommended to visit the west coast of the island, where tides have a lesser impact, and you can enjoy swimming and other activities without interruption. The west coast also features calmer waters, stunning sunsets, and a variety of beachside amenities, making it an ideal choice for a more enjoyable seaside experience.
Alexandar C — Google review
Beautiful beach with white sand. The beach boys are a bit annoying but that’s just something you must get used to in Africa.
Renáta B — Google review
This is one of the places where you can waste days from your precious vacation if your plan is to relax, swim, sunbathing. It is commercial, every 30 seconds someone wants to offer you things/tours/etc., beach itself is beautiful, but not clean, like other around the island. I cant recommended, there are many other better alternatives.

The House of Wonders or Palace of Wonders is a landmark building in Stone Town, Zanzibar. It is the largest and tallest building of Stone Town and occupies a prominent place facing the Forodhani Gardens on the old town's seafront, in Mizingani Road. It is located between the Old Fort and the Palace Museum.
Tran A — Google review
The House of Wonders has unfortunately seen better days it is now in desperate need of repair and lightbulbs. Many exhibits and some of the upper corridors are very poorly lit. It's still worth a visit if only for the experience of pushing open the biggest set of doors you'll ever step through. Also right outside is a guy selling cold drinks who I bargained the hire of his bicycle for $5 for an hour, an excellent way to look around the town.

Palace Museum not sure if knows as House of Wonders holds the richest history's of Zanzibar in a political and historical Sense It has well reserved treaties and original painted antiques of the sultans and the queen which were given as gifts by various famous Austrian Artist and have been in place since 1800's till date hence if you planning your trip to the beautiful island of Zanzibar be sure to be able to visit the Palace museum just next to the ferry and can be seen on your entry to stone town via the ferry as well. Has a perfect view of all the four islands next to it,Prison Island being the most famous of all.

Beit-al-abaij. It is closed now. I can't wait for it to reopen. Make sure to have a local guide you.

|The House of Wonders was once the most modern building in East Africa—it was the first building to have electricity and an elevator—and it mixes elements of European style and Zanzibari tradition by including cast iron columns, elaborate door carvings, coral rag, open central courtyards, and mangrove ceilings that together form a truly unique architectural achievement. Just next to it is the Palace Museum, built by the second sultan of Zanzibar in 1883, which is an opulent palace comprised of beautiful marble flooring, coral stone walls, and silver decorations. The palace was built in the Omani style as an extravagant Arab mansion, and holds many relics that offer a rare glimpse of a past era. The House of Wonders and Palace Museum have been converted into popular cultural destinations; the House of Wonders presents exhibitions dedicated to Swahili culture and the Palace Museum highlights its ties to Zanzibar's Omani history. | Location: Unguja Island, Zanzibar city Tanzania. #Tanzania #songosongoisland #fanjove #kilwa #lindi #fanjoveprivateisland #zanzibar #daresalaam #canoneos #5dsr #holiday #traveling #travelphotography #travel #sunset #sunrise #houseofwonder #unguja #ungujaIsland #pembaisland #SaadaniNationalPark #SaadaniSafariLodge

The Rock Restaurant Zanzibar is a captivating and picturesque dining destination located on a unique position on a rock in the middle of the Indian Ocean, offering breathtaking views. Situated on the Michamwi Pingwe Peninsula, it's just a short drive from various parts of Zanzibar. This internationally renowned restaurant is celebrated for its superb menu and enchanting setting, providing an unforgettable experience as guests savor delicious meals surrounded by the vastness of the ocean.
The food was really amazing, we had steak on a skewer with mashed potatoes, and the flavor was exceptional. Even though we ordered it well done, it wasn’t dry at all. For dessert, we had chocolate salami, which not only tasted fantastic but was also beautifully presented. Our waiter Henry was extremely kind and attentive, and all the food arrived very quickly. We definitely recommend this restaurant, they exceeded our expectations! 😍
Leona B — Google review
Unique experience to visit this restaurant. During high tight time, boat is the transportation ;) the environment is also very romantic with live music. The food did not surprise me too much expect the coconut tiramisu :D
YJ S — Google review
Highly recommend to have dinner there. Must reserve before going (easy to do so online and you will have to pay a deposit). Cute ambiance with live music. Menu selection is great. If tide is low you will walk a few meters to get to the restaurant. Check out the rock store; nice souvenirs made out of plastic, very cool.
Mariam O — Google review
Unique experience, having to take a boat during high tides to get to the restaurant itself. While we enjoyed the Seafood Pappardelle and the Steak on the Stick, they were not particularly impressive considering their high price level. We had made a reservation online before visiting, but if you steer away from the peak hours, you may be able to find a table without one. And while we visited the restaurant using dala dalas from and back to Paje (and it's quite easy to do so), there was a large parking lot in front of the Rock Shop. 3% charged for card payment.
DG Y — Google review
Very charming place, well-kept and clean. Friendly, knowledgeable staff (they speak many languages), and very coordinated. Lots of choice on the menu, including vegan and vegetarian options. The dishes are beautifully decorated, and each dish tastes different from the others. They also cater to people with allergies and intolerances. The welcome dish was light, simple, and very good. The Italian-style pasta was constructed perfectly, and the sauce was generous, blending well with the various pasta styles (I'm Italian). The lobster was really good, and there's a wide selection of homemade sauces. The wine list isn't extensive, but there are some very good African wines, and every wine is delicious. Hospitality is the key to this place. It should be in the Michelin guide, and why not? Even get a star!! ⭐️ Congratulations Reddy, the best restaurant in Zanzibar and maybe Tanzania.
Filippo P — Google review
You’re paying for the experience and view, and we loved that. Riding a boat back from dinner was such a cool experience. The food wasn’t bad but nothing crazy good either. The standout was the chocolate salami dessert. It was delicious.
Brandon Z — Google review
As amazing as it seems. Incredibly beautiful if you go at high tide. Good food, impeccable views and lovely staff, always trying to make your meal special. We were a big group. The manager went out of his way to make us comfortable and allowed us to order a la carte where as by normal they prefer to host big groups with set menu. Would definitely love to be back
Joydeep C — Google review
From the very first moment, everything was just perfect. The beautiful entrance with the canopy set the tone, followed by a warm welcome from the manager who promptly verified our reservation. We were then taken to our requested table with a lovely view — exactly what we hoped for. The service throughout the evening was excellent. Our waitress was attentive and friendly, the food was delicious and full of flavor, and the overall ambiance made the whole experience even more enjoyable. After 8 PM, the music added a fantastic touch — vibrant, yet not overwhelming. To top it off, we picked up some souvenirs on our way out at very reasonable prices, which was a lovely bonus. This is definitely a place we highly recommend. While the prices might be a bit on the higher side, for us it was worth every dollar we spent. A truly memorable experience from start to finish.

Paje Beach, located on the Southeast coast of Zanzibar between Bwejuu and Jambiani village, offers a laid-back atmosphere perfect for long walks along the shore. The beach is known for its popularity among kitesurfers, with a lagoon protected by a reef making it ideal for beginners.
Paje Beach is absolutely stunning! The white sand, clear turquoise water, and laid-back vibe make it one of the best beaches in Zanzibar. It’s perfect for relaxing, swimming, or trying out kitesurfing—especially during windy season. There are great beach bars and restaurants nearby, with fresh seafood and chilled drinks. Whether you’re looking for adventure or just a peaceful escape, Paje Beach has it all. Highly recommended.
Eleanna S — Google review
Very lively beach with lots of activities. Many people go kitesurfing. The tide has a big impact on the water level, which makes for a fascinating experience to see the differences between high and low tide. Like all other beaches on Zanzibar, however, you can’t move a meter without being approached by beach vendors – something you eventually get used to. Along the beach there are many hotels and restaurants. In the evenings it can get quite windy and a bit chilly to sit down by the water.
Alex H — Google review
Beautiful nature, great beach. Keep in mind the tides, water may be too far to reach. At times the sales pitches become too much as everyone is trying to make some money
Viktor B — Google review
A beach with turquoise water and visible tides, perfect for kitesurfing. You’ll find many charming local spots.
Camelia D — Google review
A paradise for watersports lovers, especially kitesurfing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding. Thanks to the steady, reliable wind. The beach is huge, so even in peak season, it never feels crowded. Powdery white sand, turquoise water, and a laid-back vibe make it a must-visit. Perfect for both adrenaline and relaxation!
Péter K — Google review
The beach is absolutely stunning, and there is a tide phenomenon that I really love. The issue for a low rating is the beach boys. Get rid of them, please! They make the entire stay in Zanzibar an absolute nightmare.
Conan N — Google review
Stay away. Beautiful beach but too many local guys walking up and down the beach harassing you, shouting “Jambo jambo” or “Hakuna matata” at you and trying to sell you things. There’s hundreds of them and they don’t stop all day. Plus if you’re a female alone they’re even more persistent. My wife got catcalled whenever I wasn’t nearby. They need to be banned from trying to sell things. It totally ruins what is a beautiful beach and there’s shops nearby for people to shop behind the beach anyway. Of course that doesn’t mean ban locals from the beach to relax and enjoy it but the selling totally takes away from the experience for everyone. Wouldn’t come back here. In fact we’re moving to a hotel with a private beach up at Pongwe. Can’t wait to finally be able to relax.

Restaurant
Lukmaan Restaurant is a popular local spot in Stone Town, known for its delicious and affordable Zanzibari and Indian cuisine. The restaurant offers a variety of local dishes like grilled seafood and biryani, with the option to choose from ready-made or made-to-order meals. Despite being busy, it's favored by both locals and tourists. Located near the former slave market on Mkunazini Street, this bustling eatery is recommended by residents for its cafeteria-style lunches and dinners.
This is your must go place to eat local Zanzibar cuisines at a really budget price. Great staff who can manage to communicate understandable English. This makes it comfortable for tourists to explore local foods. Has all those food in the pictures and just paid 32000 tsh which is amazing price compared to other restaurants and offered way better quality food.
Ashita S — Google review
We stopped by for an early dinner and was pleasantly surprised by the extensive selection of food. The restaurant was quite busy. Our server was quick to present the available options and had a good command of English. We chose to take our meal to go rather than eat in. Once we made our choices, the food was packed up swiftly. The flavors were excellent, although I would have liked it to be a touch spicier. In summary, I highly recommend this place.
{CJ} J — Google review
The food is good and clean. We came during peak hour and were served pretty fast. Only the portions of fish, especially the Jumbo prawn is not enough (only 1 shrimp - which I think is little for the price) but the rice portions are great The juices are good. I believe they should add ice in them to make them more fresh! The service is good only I would recommend having a bill printed out, cause counting with a calculator can lead to mistakes both from the clients & the management. Would come back! :) (they have free wifi)

This restaurant is not what it used to be. I have been coming here with groups for many years. Today I was here with 17 people. It took about two hours for most of the orders to arrive, but two of my guests had to wait even longer. The portions have become smaller. The waiters did their best and were friendly, but they cannot compensate for the wrong concept of the restaurant. Some dishes still taste good, but overall satisfaction is much lower than in the past. We received no compensation. It’s a pity — I am now looking for alternatives for my groups.
László S — Google review
Nice! Although it was our first day and we haven’t tried many local dishes, we like what we have eaten. Food was clean and tasty and we do recommend here for customers searching to try something local. They have good amount of options in their menu including vegetarian. The atmosphere was nice, it is one of the nicest buildings around this area. We recommend you to not waste you time by waiting in the line to order. Waiters are all around and their menu includes prices. Rose was helping us during our visit and she was kind and attentive. Although the restaurant being busy at the period we have visited, the service was really fast.
Ece T — Google review
Lukmaan is one of the best local restaurants. A wide selection of local specialties, fresh seafood, and freshly squeezed smoothies. The meat is grilled on-site, and they also serve shawarma. The waiters and staff are very friendly. They're very happy when you come often and regularly. And they know you by name. I was there almost every day for the two weeks I was there. I'll definitely be back. Many greetings to Zahura, Mohsen, and his brother. See you next time :)
Muhsin C — Google review
We went there on our last day in Stone Town with our guide and the food was very good and quickly made. It like some cantina and you can see chefs cooking. They offer a lot of different mostly traditional food. The waiter was very helpfull and he show us every item that they have so we could decide easier. They have a nice terace and a lot of people, also a lot of turists and also some cats that are waiting for your food haha. Everything was good but for some reason more expenisve then we tought.

Enjoyed authentic Ethiopian dish. The taste and service was amazing. The owner is a friendly lady who prepares the food heself. You won't be disappointed. Also have the coffee with traditional ceremony.

I had a wonderful experience in last year in Ethiopian resturant vugaa but still the same taste & the same nice portion perfect blend of spices and flavours. Especially /mix combo for 2x/ very nice & so yummy Ethiopian layers juice hibiscus & coffee all are very very so nice .

Food was great but we had an issue where people in our group dropped out and the restaurant forced us to be served with the extra portions. That said, not sure if we actually received them but we certainly paid for them... It certainly was an experience but don't recommend walking through the fish market beforehand. Provide a bit of extra time (and maybe money) for the food to arrive even if you order early.
Phillip S — Google review
Very tasteful dishes and amazing juices. The place has a nice setup, though portions are a bit small for the price. The waiter wasn’t very enthusiastic, but overall the service was good.

The Hibiscus and Lime Slushie is an absolute must 🌺🍋‍🟩 The Number 3 vegan combo is the best one, you get the split pea gravy in the pot and it’s bubbling 🥘 A nice Ethiopian coffee to end it all off and you have the best evening dinner you can imagine ☕️ 🇪🇹

Make sure to enjoy a meal or two here - authentic and delicious and a truly exceptional experience. Thank you for the lovely meal and relaxing evening.

The Silk Route is a multi-level restaurant offering traditional Indian cuisine in a captivating setting with stunning views. The decor has a traditional touch, and the food is presented in beautiful copper bowls. It's recommended to arrive early for a chance to dine on the top floor, but regardless, the accommodating staff ensures an unforgettable dining experience. This restaurant reflects Zanzibar's historical ties to the Indian subcontinent and offers a wide range of vegetarian and vegan options.
Amazing lunch. Service is top class. Ordered something which was not on menu and the wish was granted. Enjoyed the vegetarian delicacies. We ordered mango lassi, onion pakora, paneer tikka masala which is served with rice and naan. Chandrakant and team are doing a really great job.
Nikesh V — Google review
So, I hit up Silk Route in Zanzibar, and it was a bit of a mixed experience. The menu prices were way higher than what I saw on Google Maps – like, 35% higher! Still, the place was packed by evening, so they must be doing something right. Don’t sit by the rooftop, because there were a few flies bothering us when the food came out. The service was great; the staff were super nice. But honestly, the biryani was too oily for my taste.

Really good food and kind staff. I do not understand why people complain about slow service…. YOU ARE IN AFRICA, IT’S POLE POLE MENTALITY. adapt or go back home. I really recommend this place

First time being in stone town, wanted some indian food, the food was amazing!!! the food came out fast, fresh and exactly how we wanted it! The staff and the manager were all so lovely and i will always remember this experience, I would definitely recommend this place to eat. We got the Mutton Biryani, and mutton sheesh kebabs, and chicken tikka masala with butter naan. The portion sizes were big, having to take them away!

Taarab Restaurant in Zanzibar offers a unique experience that captures the essence of the island's culture. The restaurant is not only known for its delicious seafood and African cuisine but also for being a hub of Taarab music, which has deep roots in the local culture. This haunting blend of classical Swahili poetry, percussive rhythm, and melody reflects influences from various regions including the Middle East, India, Africa, and the West.
We had the famous coconut crab soup, it's delicious! The restaurant has a beautiful view and the waiters are very professional. The restaurant is located on the rooftop of a nice hotel, you can get there by a lift.

I had a salad nicoise and the chickpea hummus; the hummus was delicious. There are very nice views from the rooftop and the waitress was very kind. Note, they charge a 5% service fee and it goes to the restaurant not to the waitress.
Heather S — Google review
The rooftop view and the service were great here. The quality of the food is good, however the portion sizes are very very small considering what you pay. We ordered the coconut crab soup to start which was delicious, but was so small that after 4 spoonfuls it was finished! The mango salad was great. For mains we got the seafood jumbo, again nice flavour with the tamarind but a tiny amount of actual seafood. My partner got the curry which was flavourful. Our waitress was really attentive and helpful, it’s just a shame the portions were so tiny!
Becca L — Google review
The worst seafood restaurant experience in my entire life! I came here reading all these good review and literally this restaurant is a nightmare. I ordered crab soup and seafood platter, the most expensive plate on the menu, and drinks. Good came out after 40 mins and it’s COLD and STALE. It’s left over from the day before. I can taste the staleness of the food. Its a crime to serve this. I almost felt disrespected that ppl can serve that to me. I left it uneaten after trying to swallow a few. Paid in full. Never go back. Do yourself a favor! DO NOT EAT HERE.

A really nice experience. Food and service were extraordinary. Kalista, our waitress, took really good care of us. 100 % recommendation!
Stephanie H — Google review
Beautiful atmosphere and good (albeit a bit slow) service. The starters—seafood salad and coconut and crab soup were excellent—but were let down by the blasé grilled fish and prawn biryani. The mains were boring and not very tasty.
Michael O — Google review
Very good food offered in Taarab restaurant which is inside double tree by Hilton hotel. The entrance to the hotel is hidden in a small tight alley betwen the houses. The food selection is quite diverse, you can find fish, chicken, meat, and even vegan, so you won't have a problem here. The local dishes are tasty, but don't expect the same with the international dishes. The pasta, the hummus, and the cold mezze was just fine. The service is good, but could be better. One time we had to wait 40 minutes to get our vegetarian food served. When we asked, they said the kitchen is busy, although only 4 tables out of 10 were occupied. But it's ok, sometimes people are "pole pole" here in Zanzibar.

Lazuli Cafe is a vibrant and cozy spot offering fresh, healthy Swahili-inspired meals. The menu features a variety of options including curries, chapati wraps, sandwiches, burgers, seafood, and pancakes along with popular fruit juices and smoothies. This relaxed corner cafe on Shangani Street is known for its healthy salads and freshly squeezed juices. With colorful plastic tables and a laid-back island pace, it's a charming place to unwind.
Hidden gem and if you see it from the outside you wouldn’t give a penny. Most of the dishes are half price compared to touristic restaurants. Very good food and especially fresh (they might not have everything and they go out to buy fresh fruits or missing ingredients, therefore you get very fresh dishes and drinks). Plan around 30min till the food is served because they cook stuff in the moment. We had the best cooked tuna ever. We suggest to get the fish of the day. The staff is also very nice and welcoming. If you see there’s nobody inside, they’re in the kitchen, feel feee to knock 😂

Super nice little restaurant! Delicious food for a very friendly price, compared to other restaurants around. Burgers, wraps, curry, ,++ and great fresh juice. Try the ginger soda! The people working there are friendly and welcoming. If you want to get away from the typical tourist places, this is the place!
Mia Ø — Google review
Our preferred restaurant in Stone Town, offering succulent food for unbeatable prices (4 people for under 70k Tsh). Curries are tasty, fishburgers attractive and the selection of wraps is quite creative. Fruit juices can be mixed to your taste. Service super friendly while a bit slow because it takes time to make good food from scratch. About 15 seats but we never saw more than 2 tables occupied. A bit hidden in a side street back the Dolphin but worth looking for it!
Mia.Seb — Google review
Had Curried Chickpeas here for lunch and the dish was phenomenal and very flavorful. It did take about 20-25 minutes to prepare as they make it fresh to order, but the wait was worth it. This place accepts cash only, though US dollars are also accepted at a fair exchange.
Y B — Google review
So let’s start off - YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT. There are too many bad reviews of the wait time. Get over it people. The reviews all say this, suck it up you’re on vacation - Hakuna Matata and Pole Pole. Wait time was 45 min from sitting to getting the food. They actually were missing ingredients and went out and bought it but apologized for the delay. They only take cash but they will walk with you over to a local Cambio or a place for credit card (with a small fee). The place and the location does look a bit sketchy but the people running it are very very nice, it is super safe so don’t judge a book by its cover. The drinks were great and very fresh. Like I said they went out and bought some of the ingredients instead of saying, “oh we don’t have it.” The fish burger was tasty. My daughter had the fish and chips which was a hit small but just right for lunch and the curry was flavorful. It is not Michelin star but it is very good. The prices really show how much all the other places overcharge. Lunch for 3 is less than 45,000ksh. You can’t even get a burger at the Hyatt for that :). So 1) pole pole - it will take time 2) the place is bare bones 3) the food is good and fresh 4) the price makes you wonder why everything else is so expensive
D R — Google review
Rustic café, seats max 15. Been there a couple times for something small (wrap, burger) and it kind of hits the spot if you're a tourist and hankering for something a bit like home. The quality is passable. Slow service.
Peter D — Google review
Honestly this place deserves more attention, it is an amazing little restaurant with fresh food geared towards healthiness. Absolutely AMAZING juices that you can create with your own mix of fruits, very good seafood (the tuna deserves a mention of honor) and very relaxed environment.

This place is really cute and just off the path of the main road with a more authentic feel. The food was delicious and the people friendly. If you are in a hurry let them know as the food can take a while to arrive. We ordered the spiced ice tea and spiced ice coffee, coconut curry and sweet n sour prawns. Would recommend all! 10% student and volunteer discount, No wifi, and bathroom next door at Stonetown Cafe.

Unique experience to visit this restaurant. During high tight time, boat is the transportation ;) the environment is also very romantic with live music. The food did not surprise me too much expect the coconut tiramisu :D

You’re paying for the experience and view, and we loved that. Riding a boat back from dinner was such a cool experience. The food wasn’t bad but nothing crazy good either. The standout was the chocolate salami dessert. It was delicious.

Located in the historic building of the British Consulate, Livingstone Beach Restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating with a deck under beachfront trees. Known for its happy hour and cocktails with a view, this beachside gem allows guests to kick off their shoes and enjoy drinks in the sand just steps away from Park Hyatt Zanzibar hotel.
We can't understand the bad reviews. The location is beautiful, there is live music and the staff are hard-working, quick and friendly. The drinks (iced coffee, iced tea, non-alcoholic cocktail) were very good. We also had a starter and a veggie burger, both of which were also very tasty and plentiful. The price was really quite reasonable. A relief after all the bad restaurants. Highly recommended.

When arriving to Stone Town i was very hungry and lonely. Sat down to have a beer and eat. Tuna tartare was phenomenal! Right on the beach. So if going at dusk don't forget your bug repellent like I did. But overall, food was great. Little pricey. But again, it's the on the main beach in Stone Town. So very convenient and lots of things to see.

Good food, very beautiful location, especially the top floor. It gives you an amazing view of the ships entertaining and leaving Stone Town. Also they gave our children's some coloring pencils! The building itself is also vintage, with a sturdy, wooden staircase.

Stumbled on Livingstones while lost and wandering through stone town. A very pleasant lunch time experience, had Pizza which was enough for 2 of us and fairly tasty if slightly oily. Great to sit outside and watch the passing parade of boats and folks heading off to snorkel the surrounding islands. Some mildly irritating vendors but easily ignored .. a pleasant experience.

One of the beach restaurant bar places at stone town - 100% for tourists. Right now its low season so it was pretty empry. I just had some beers at the bar and chatted with bar tender Adam. Food menue offers everything from around the globe, but it did not feel tempting, too many opions.

Nice location, slowest table service I experienced in 3 weeks in Zanzibar. Relaxed beachside vibe. Very cold beer. Staff just not very attentive/ quick with service. Cashier and other staff inside are rude, don’t smile. Could be better if customer service improves.
James S — Google review
Nice place to catch the sunset along the beach. Happy hour from 4-5pm, there’s different promotion on different days. For example Sundays is it 50% off for mojitos. You can watch the locals playing football by the beach or just swimming in the sea. It gets crowded in the evening, so do come early if you want to get tables by the beach. Otherwise the inside of the bar was quite empty. Didn’t try the food so can’t comment.
Donovan L — Google review
Paid 22,000 for two 500ml beers which is way overpriced. The menu states that local beers is 7500 but conveniently it’s only 33cl versions of the beer which they don’t have in stock. It’s a lovely location and great live music, but these seems like quite a bad and unnecessary practice.

Dining at Mercury’s Bar in Stone Town was an absolute delight! From the moment we stepped in, the ambiance was warm and inviting, with a charming blend of Zanzibar’s rich history and modern touches. Overrated with Frustrating Payment Issues** We ignored the mediocre ratings and decided to give Mercury’s Bar a chance, but unfortunately, our experience confirmed many of the complaints. **The Good:** - The view over the river is lovely and probably the best thing about this place. Freddy's Mercury's music in the background. And stable WiFi. **The Bad:** - **Slow & Disorganized Service:** Despite being a large group, the waiter struggled to take our order efficiently, cramming everything onto one sheet and causing unnecessary delays. - **Mediocre Food:** The dishes we tried were overcooked and underwhelming. "Okay" food isn’t good enough when you’re paying for a dining experience. - **Payment Nightmare:** The real frustration came when paying. Their card machine (which, as other reviews mention, *frequently* doesn’t work) failed for all of us. We had to scramble for cash, borrowing from each other. - **Suspicious Currency Exchange:** Paying in USD, EUR, or Tanzanian shillings? Be warned—they use their own unfair exchange rates, costing you more. The waiter took ages to calculate, so we had to step in. I spoke to the manager about these issues, especially the card machine problem that’s clearly a recurring issue. He nodded politely, but unless something changes, this feels like a scam to force cash payments at inflated rates. **Final Verdict:** 2/5 Nice view, but poor service, average food, and shady payment practices. Until they fix these problems (especially the card machine "conveniently" failing), I’d recommend eating elsewhere. If they improve, I’ll update my review—but for now, **be cautious**.

This airport is incredible. The people are so friendly. Everyone is very well dressed beautiful energy and everything is very fancy up skill. Thank you so much for your care as well as giving me ten gigabytes for free upon arrival!

Small but friendly airport, easy to get through, both arriving and departing. Lovely curio shops airside. Women's toilets at the gate (gate 5) did not have any toilet paper this morning.

The island is beautiful with its people and paradise beaches etc. Once you land you have a feeling that you are being scammed when any of your healthcare insurances are not respected and they simply don’t allow you to enter the next level at the airport without buying a local health cover for 40 $. Then you pay for Visa 50$ and tourist levy too. You have the same feeling when at the departure they offer to wrap your bags starting 10$ going up to 15$! You wonder if these people know the value of money! Other two annoying things on the island are the pseudo Masais who try to sell you something once you step on the beach and Crows 🤣😂

I was quite surprised at how clean and efficient this airport was. This was my first time here. However the facilities are neat and clean. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Julius Nyerere International Airport

International airport
Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania is a key starting point for many safaris in the country. The airport consists of two terminal buildings, with Terminal 3 dedicated to international flights and Terminal 2 catering to local flights. It offers modern infrastructure, efficient layout, clear signage, and helpful staff for a smooth passenger experience. Security measures are robust to ensure safety.
The check-in experience at Julius Nyerere International Airport can vary depending on the staff. I’ve heard that some officers may ask for extra documents just to make the process more difficult. In my case, however, this did not happen, and the staff at the check-in desk were kind and professional. Overall, including the security personnel, I found the airport to be staffed by helpful and courteous people, which made the experience smoother than I had anticipated. There is a row of currency exchange shops tucked away on the right-hand side at the back of the check-in counters at Julius Nyerere International Airport. There are around five outlets here, and they all offer almost identical rates. Depending on the currency, the margin when exchanging local currency for US dollars is about 2 per cent, which is very reasonable. In fact, these rates are often better than those in the city, making the airport counters a convenient and reliable option for travellers. # Dar es Salaam

My arrival in Dar es Salaam was smooth, but the experience inverted 🙄 completely upon departure. The atmosphere in the international departures terminal at Julius Nyerere Airport was surprisingly bleak. It offered no executive lounge, and the one major shop was strikingly empty. Bizarrely, just a short distance away, the domestic terminal was a lively hub, complete with a functional supermarket. The structural setup felt illogical, as we couldn't cross over to the more vibrant domestic side, only to eventually greet fellow international passengers who had originated from that better-equipped terminal. So next time, we enter into the domestic side 🤔 to be more comfortable

Overall, my experience at Julius Nyerere International Airport was pretty smooth. Customs took a little while, so I highly recommend getting your visa before arriving in Tanzania to save time. If you’re also heading to Kenya, it’s worth getting both visas together as a package it makes the process way easier. The airport itself was nicer than I expected for Dar es Salaam clean, organized, and easy enough to navigate. Staff were helpful, and baggage claim didn’t take too long once we got through immigration. Just be prepared for a little patience at customs and you’ll be fine. Safe travels! ✈️

One of the best international Airport in Tanzania 🇹🇿. The airport is vear neat and clean. The immigration went very smooth and they are treating the passengers with very well manners. The security not giving hard time and taking necessary precautions to avoid problems. The Flying Pan restaurant is best to have Vegetarian Toasted cheese.

Racism at Immigration – Turkish Airlines Business Class Date/Time: 17 September 2025, 05:30 PM We traveled on a Turkish Airlines Business Class flight and were directed to a separate security check. However, many passengers without Business Class tickets were allowed to use this lane after paying the staff, which undermined the purpose of having a dedicated Business Class process. At immigration, the officer treated us with extreme rudeness. Before even greeting us, she shouted because I had taken a picture of my passport, although only blurry chairs were visible in the background. After I deleted the photo, she continued by telling us that this was a Business Class area and asked for our lounge passes—although they were already in her hand. This was one of the rudest and most unpleasant experiences we have ever had, despite the fact that we fly frequently. At the security checkpoint, another employee insisted on opening all our bags, but found nothing suspicious. The process was unnecessarily long and unprofessional. Overall, the Business Class procedure was slower and less professional than the standard one. Despite paying more for our tickets, we were treated worse than regular passengers.

My first time traveling to Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam was a pleasant experience. It is a small airport, and check-in is very easy. The staff were nice and professional. There are a few restaurants inside the airport, as well as several restaurants, a café, a money exchange store, and gift shops outside in front of the airport. Overall, I like the airport.

Omg! Tanzania is on the rise to greatness. Beautiful people, with beautiful hearts, a beautiful economy putting it's people first and then, beautiful infrastructure.

I would rate my experience at Dar es Salaam Airport quite low, around 2 stars, mainly because of the departure facilities. To begin with, the airport itself is clean, air-conditioned, and fairly well-maintained, which gave a decent impression at first. The international arrival area was smooth and organized, and I did not face much trouble while entering the city. However, things completely changed during departure. I was traveling to Mumbai via Nairobi (BOM via NBO) from Terminal 2 with Precision Air, and the entire experience was unpleasant. After check-in, passengers were diverted to a section that was poorly managed. Almost all shops were closed, leaving no real options to spend time comfortably. Only one café was barely open, with very limited choices, and even that looked like it was about to shut down. Spending long hours there was frustrating, especially because my flight was delayed. To make it worse, the international departure area completely lacked proper duty-free shops, which is very disappointing for an airport serving global travelers. Overall, while the airport may look fine on arrival, the departure experience was horrible. Facilities need serious improvement. Until then, I cannot recommend it for international travel.
