Fortaleza de San Felipe

Sights & Landmarks
Fortaleza de San Felipe is a historic Spanish fortress built in the late 1500s to defend against pirates and invaders. Located on a hill at the Puntilla Del Malecon, it overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and protected the entrance to Puerto Plata's seaport. The fort offers fully narrated tours around its grounds, showcasing history displays and old cannons pointing out to sea.
This fort is in San Felipe Park which is a short walk from the cruise ship port. The sidewalk is skinny in places so not accessible for wheelchairs. Once at the park it’s easy walking to get to the fort itself. Who wouldn’t like seeing a Spanish fort dating to the late 1500s which was built to defend against pirates. The fort was completed in 1577. There is a $2 per person fee and you get a headset so you can listen to the story of the fort. My headset didn’t work well. I think it was a bad cable or the audio port. It was fine as the fort is interesting with lots of things to look at and read. Like most of the Dominican, the fort could use money to fix things up. It’s a great place to get photos of the water, beaches and cruise ship port. There are public bathrooms in the fort.

Not only is the first interesting and historically significant, you should go there just for the history alone, but there's a beautiful view and a great breeze off the water to keep things cool and comfortable. It was about 100 pesos and worth the price to get to see the views from the turrets. There is parking and there are public bathrooms too, and souvenir stalls too if you like that kind of thing.
Michelle M — Google review
Well maintain, nice to walk and not feel like a tour is going to ask for a fee or approach you. Beautiful place from puerto plata and full of a lot of potential.
Neil G — Google review
The San Felipe Fort was a stop on our private tour of Puerto Plata. If you’ve been to San Juan and seen the large fort there, this is much smaller, but very similar in age and stone composition. Over 450 years old, it is on a cliff next to ocean so there are plenty of great views. You can also buy tickets to go through it for a half hour tour.
Stephanie C — Google review
Stopped here on a cruise excursion. Well kept area.
Vonzell L — Google review
It's a beautiful place overlooking the ocean with an awesome history.
Juan C — Google review
Nice site you can easily walk there
Diego G — Google review
This place is really neat. It only cost $1.00 USD to get in and walk around. Nice views of the harbour and sea. Just a nice piece of history to enjoy for about 45 minutes or so. Lots of local peddlers around trying to sell their wares. I love chatting them up and buying a few trinkets.

Playa Dorada is a stunning beach in the Dominican Republic, known for its palm-lined golden sands and crystal-clear waters. It's not just a beach; it's a destination offering luxury and relaxation. The area provides various activities, from kitesurfing to exploring waterfalls at 27 Charcos de Damajagua and snorkeling at Cayo Arena. Visitors can also immerse themselves in local culture by visiting nearby villages, trying Dominican cuisine, or learning about cocoa and coffee plantations.
Excellent ocean swimming on the North coast of Dominican Republic. Mount Isabel de Torres provides protection from hurricanes, we are here during hurricane Melissa, Oct. 2025 and only have yellow flags along the beachfront. Great Beach.
Paul B — Google review
Very nice stretch of beach. There are some coral rocks in some areas, and a lot of seaweed washes up, but they rake it and keep it clean. The beach itself is quiet and stretches for quite a distance and encompasses several resorts.
Dennis S — Google review
We had a really enjoyable day at this beach and would absolutely return, but there are a few things that kept it from being a full five-star experience. What truly stood out was the experience— not just in what was available, but in the people. The beach had a lively, local charm with vendors walking by offering everything from handmade chachkes and sunglasses to snacks, drinks, and even photo ops with animals like parrots and iguanas. It made the beach feel vibrant and alive, and our kids loved the excitement. There were plenty of options for relaxing — cabanas, beach chairs, and umbrellas were available to rent, and a full-service beachfront restaurant was just steps away. While we appreciated the convenience, everything came at an added cost and most of the facilities, including the chairs, cabanas, restrooms, and changing areas, could really use a refresh. They worked, but they were definitely showing their age. The food was okay — nothing to rave about, but good enough to keep us going through a day in the sun. What made the meal more enjoyable was the service. Our favorite waiter, **Christian**, was kind, funny, and went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed. He really elevated the whole experience. There are also lots of little shops nearby if you want to browse or pick up souvenirs, and the waves were perfect for swimming and playing. Overall, this beach has character, color, and charm — and with a few upgrades, it could easily be five stars.
Kimberly H — Google review
In December and January the water was quite full of algae. Maybe it’s the season, I don’t know. Not in all the parts it was full with algae, but anyway it was disturbing. So, sometimes we were going to Sosua beach as it was wonderful there….
Alexandra S — Google review
Great beach, not to crowed at the end of july, good for relaxing and enjoy the area.
Emerson. — Google review
I recently visited this beautiful white sand beach, and I must say, it's impeccably maintained despite the numerous resorts nearby. Arriving with a tourist group, we were delighted to find a designated area with beach chairs and umbrellas exclusively for tourists. The availability of tap water for a refreshing post-beach bath was a thoughtful touch. Additionally, the convenience of having a restaurant nearby serving snacks and drinks added to the overall enjoyable experience. I highly recommend this beach for a relaxing getaway.
Madhuli P — Google review
Great beach. Water was 85. Food & drinks were good. Fresh water showers to clean up.
Chris K — Google review
Stunning beach that is only accessible for the resorts in the Playa Dorada gated complex. Technically, locals can access it if they enter on the west side of the public beach and walk a couple of kilometers, but that's not an issue for me. Pristince sandy beaches with beautiful warm blue water with waves to jump in. There are kiosks to rent jetskis, parasailing, snorkel tours, etc.

I can not say enough good things about this place! We booked this excursion when I was on a cruise with Carnival, and we spent the day at this park. It was absolutely beautiful. There are so many things to do for children little and older. There is a pool, a lagoon, a water obstacle course, shows featuring sharks seals dolphins and you can even snorkel with fish, you can swim with dolphins. The opportunities are endless not to mention the buffet was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this!! They also get amazing photos and videos of whatever encounter you do! Enjoy!!! Sorry for the crazy sentences i am just excited to share! lol

Excellent experience at Ocean World Adventure Park! Amazing Staff in every area (shout out Robin Santos with Guest Services and Yann with the Dolphin Swim). Park is well-maintained, clean and beautiful all around. The Dolphin Swim was super fun, interactive and overall, great experience! I would definitely visit again anytime. Great people, tasty food, nice ambience and spectacular views.
Mario G — Google review
Great time all around. Do the experiences! Yes they cost a bit, but well worth it. And get the pictures too. Again, yes they are expensive but those are awesome memories. Staff was awesome and very friendly, helpful, funny, and personable. Skip the buffet though, totally not worth it. Definitely recommend the dolphin and sea lion experience.
Andrew B — Google review
There was a little misunderstanding at the reception — my husband thought that by paying for the dolphin encounter he would be able to take photos of us, but it turned out that phones were not allowed in the area at all. He was very upset, and the situation could have completely ruined our visit. Thankfully, supervisor Juan L. Rojas stepped in and handled everything with true professionalism, patience, and a sincere smile. Juan L. Rojas turned what could have been a disappointing experience into one of the highlights of our trip. He is a true professional who knows exactly how to treat guests and resolve issues with grace and respect. This is the kind of attitude that makes people want to come back again and again. Thanks to him, we left with wonderful memories, amazing photos, and a deep appreciation for the way he handled the situation. He truly deserves recognition and a well-earned bonus! 🌟

Great place to go if you are in Puarto Plata, just 10min away with taxi from Taino Bay. A bit expensive, if you are coming here as a cruise passenger. Anyhow nice place to relax by man made beach, or use the pools. Day pass includes lunch.
Arnolds H — Google review
Fantastic experience. Martin was a great guide and the trainers were knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and made the experiences so much fun. Dolphins, sea lions, sharks, birds and capybara!

Wow, wow, wow! Fantastic place play and to eat. The food was absolutely top-notch! The buffet is one time through, so fill up the plates! The rice amazing, veggies, fruit...wow! If you want to swim with dolphins, sting rays, sharks, snorkeling with tropical fish, or play at the private beach or water slides! You can also feed the birds and capybara's! So fun, safe, and delicious food and drinks. Johanny was absolutely amazing and so helpful, definitely sit in his section for vip treatment 🥰 The staff is so friendly while also keeping the little ones safe. Highly recommend! Breathtaking views. My first time in a Cable Car, AMAZING EXPERIENCE. Especially considering it was my first time out of the country. Definitely can’t wait to go back and visit again!! One of the highlights of my trip!
Sydney S — Google review
Amazing views. We ended up driving rather than taking the cable car. Steep road but rental car had no problems. Make sure to make time for the trails.
Orman A — Google review
Very beautiful place
Rola S — Google review
Amazing location for adventure and photos. Friendly staff and overall experience was breathtaking. Going up to the mountain, you will need a good vehicle with a big engine such as a 4X4 because the strain on the engine as the altitude increases.
Emi B — Google review
The highest view I've been to in a while. The air was thin and it was cold but the view was amazing. Try and stop by one of the shops and get some of the Mamajuana!

The Puerto Plata Cable Car, also known as Teleferico, is the only one of its kind in the Caribbean. It offers a scenic 15-minute ride to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres, where visitors can explore botanical gardens and visit the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. From this vantage point, at 2,600 feet above sea level, guests can take in breathtaking panoramic views of Puerto Plata city and its coastline stretching over 100 kilometers along the Atlantic Ocean.
Definitely worth a visit. We visited it during a Cruise stop. Do to heavy traffic on route and long line for the Cable Cars, could not plan a lot of visits during our stop but glad we made this one. Beautiful views from the top.
T S — Google review
THIS CABLE CAR SERVICE IS CLOSED. Don’t know why it still says it is opened on Google Maps. The people there told that it will not be operational for the next 2.5 years. There is bus service that takes you to the mountains which cost us around 20 USD for one person. The ride is good but you won’t get much time to spend on the mountain near the statue. The price of the souvenir was little high in the stores near the statue.
Neby V — Google review
The place is beautiful, but beware of the famous Tour guides, they tell they work for the park and blah blah, they have uniforms and everything but theyxare not employees they are locals looking to make and extra buck. The machine is been down for a long time. Honestly google the mountain for directions no need of a tour guide. They see you as a tourist and they jacked up the prices. Do not buy in the souvenirs stores they are not worth it.
Neil G — Google review
Still closed. I went to a tourist spot and asked the teller. She advised it’s been closed a year because people don’t want to pay to use the cable car. She said probably for two more years. Her English was good and my Spanish is dreadful but I relayed on what I was told. I drove up to the gate at about 3pm on a Wednesday and took the below photo.
Ebony E — Google review
Cable car was not working so we drove to the top Amazing view of the city
Piyush G — Google review
Nice affordable activity to do with your family. Once at the top, there is a spectacular view and you can walk along the paths through the gardens and to the caves and lagoon. I gave 4 stars because the directions to these sites are really not very specific. It took us a while and many wrong turns before we got to the caves 🙃🙃🙃
Murielle V — Google review
Views are amazing if you are driving a rental or coming you dont need any person in a green polo taking you up. You are good with just taking yourself up. At the top there is a hike on the top that takes you around the area to show you the water falls, typical Dominican house of the past, and natural areas as well. Also the shops at the top way over charge like 20+ dollars for things that are worth 3 dollars else where. Always bargain.
Mateo R — Google review
Amazing ride to top! Beautiful tropical area with lots of paths, a traditional kitchen, pond, and observation areas. We spent 2.5 hours exploring the area. A lot cheaper to buy tickets on-site versus with a tour.

Malecón de Puerto Plata

Mentioned on
8 lists
Malecón de Puerto Plata is a picturesque beachside boardwalk that stretches from Long Beach to the city center. It offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Statue of Neptune, as well as palm-bordered beaches with clear waters. The area is lined with a variety of bars and restaurants, making it perfect for leisurely walks, bike rides, or people-watching. Visitors can also explore the colonial museum at Fortaleza and stroll through town to visit shops and the local church.
Wonderful area. Can't wait to bring my electric bike here on my next visit!
Peter C — Google review
Puerto Plata, we had such high hopes after seeing beautiful stuff online. Unfortunately it turned out to be a bitter disappointment. The supposedly beautiful Malecon with its beautiful beaches is nothing more than a very long walk past a landfill they call a shoreline. The beaches are literally miles of garbage. The few exceptions are the spots where people have a beachbar. From the grass right next to the pathway untill the water, over almost the entire length of the Malecon is filled with trash It's heartbreaking because the nature and the sights are so beautiful. If the authorities manage to solve this, it can be one of the most beautiful spots in the DR. But for now it's just a sad reminder of the wastfullness of man and the ongoing environmental problems they have created.
Super P — Google review
Great place to walk but a lot of garbage on the sides. It is all locals who party along here most nights but busiest day is Sunday. They just throw their bottles and styrofoam packages all over the beach and sides of roads and don’t care. I want to cry when I see such a beautiful walkway and view and see nothing but garbage everywhere. Very surprising considering the many tour ships they get there. It is a common thing that Dominicans accept all over the country. The President should give refunds for all bottles and eliminate styrofoam packaging on the island. They should also have many more garbage cans on the Malecon. The many poor people would be happy to pick it all up and receive some compensation and the island would be beautiful again. The many washrooms are all closed and in bad shape and cannot be used. Many of the restaurants do not have washrooms so be careful if you have any issues.
Mark P — Google review
Great view towards ocean from shore, however nearby you can find lot's of garbage on the seashore....
Кonstantin — Google review
Went for lunch and had some cervezas and tacos, hard and soft shells. Service and atmosphere were great. Nice views of the water and roadway, but the traffic was a little noisy. There's a pier across the street and a nice boardwalk where you can walk off your libations.
Aaron A — Google review
Neat malecón with views of ocean and mountains all the way down. However, the 4 lane road is very scary to cross, especially with speeding drivers and few and inadequate crosswalks.
Royland F — Google review
Beautiful place. It is a shame authorities don't take responsibility to keep it clean.

The museum is housed in a well-preserved historic home and features exhibits that bring to life the history of Puerto Plata and the significant role played by General Luperón.
Chris gave the two of us a great tour of the place. There is a lot of information in Spanish I wish was translated but she did a wonderful job explaining what was important.

Amazing tour! Learn all about the history of Puerta Plata and the General who stopped it from being sold to other countries. Must see when in the area!
Miranda P — Google review
It was so wonderful to see some of the rich history of the Dominican Republic! I would take this tour again.
Elizabeth C — Google review
A small museum, but worth the trip. The tour guide was informative and friendly. The entrance fee of 100 pesos/about $2 USD is well worth it. A great way to learn about the countries history.
RES S — Google review
This museum is both the birthplace and deathplace of General Gregorio Luperón. The exterior of the house is a beautiful seagreen, and the interior of the house is renovated to display exhibits and artifacts. This fun tour was made even better with the skill of the guide. Fluent in English and Spanish, she gave added insights on artifacts and the building, along with translating signage as needed. Tickets are $200DR (under $4 USD) for adults and $100DR (under $2USD) for children. Casa Museo General Gregorio Luperón is a must-visit for anyone interested in Dominican history.

Umbrella Street in Puerto Plata is a must-see attraction located in the historic part of the city. The street is adorned with brightly-colored umbrellas, creating a picturesque setting that's perfect for photography. This vibrant spot has become popular among tourists, especially when cruise ships dock, bringing a lively atmosphere. However, during quieter times, it offers a glimpse into local life and becomes an ideal place for people-watching and unique photo opportunities.
Beautiful street. You can find food and cold presidente' here. There are plenty of stores around all geared towards tourist. There were people with parrots and monkeys for you to take pictures with for a tip.
Alicia C — Google review
Umbrella Street in Puerto Plata is a vibrant and colorful spot perfect for photos and a relaxing stroll. The hanging umbrellas create a cheerful atmosphere and offer shade while you explore the charming street lined with shops and cafes. It’s a popular tourist attraction, small but worth a quick stop to enjoy the lively vibe and capture memorable pictures.
Ezekiel G — Google review
Really loved how well kept and modern this is. A couple of people selling photos for $5. I got one with a macaw and also someone with an umbrella that took a great video. Well worth the $5. I was grabbed by someone who helps with tours and photos. I guess a tour guide. Who also took me to Pink Steet where I took photos with 4 years old Lizzie her pet monkey. Over proved tourists shops aimed at the cruise ships. Pharmacist was great and I bought the items over the counter and paid in dollars. I e cream cart, juice bar and local supermarket. I parked in the free car park. I took a fabulous photo outside of the coffee and cacao / chocolate shop. I wished I’d stayed longer and bought more. But a tour guide arrived with a lot of tourists and it got a bit too noisy. Vendors sis not lost prices which I dislike as I prefer to browse and compare. But that’s the same in other countries. Pay by card or dollars or pesos. There’s a duty free store next to Pink Street that has price variation if paying by cash or card. A must see and do. I’ll pop back on my next visit.
Ebony E — Google review

Specialty Museums
Museo del Ámbar Dominicano, located in a Victorian building, is a must-visit attraction in Puerto Plata. It houses a unique collection of valuable Dominican amber, known for its exceptional transparency. The museum offers an immersive experience into the world of this semiprecious resin, transporting visitors back to the time of the Taino people. Visitors can explore ancient artifacts and stunning amber jewelry while learning about the island's rich amber deposits.
The Dominican Amber Museum truly exceeded my expectations. It’s located in a beautiful old Victorian house that gives the whole visit a unique charm. I learned so much about amber, and seeing ancient insects trapped inside pieces that are millions of years old was amazing. The famous blue amber—found only in the Dominican Republic—is absolutely stunning. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, making the tour enjoyable and informative. There's also a lovely little shop with genuine amber jewelry. Perfect for families, couples, or solo travelers. Definitely a must-see if you're in Puerto Plata!
Levis A — Google review
The Amber Museum, and it was so much more than I expected! 🏛️✨ Seeing fossilized insects inside the amber and learning about the process of how it's made was absolutely fascinating. 🐞🪨 It’s a great place to admire these beautiful stones while getting a history lesson. One of my favorite parts? Finding out that an amber piece from this museum was borrowed for the Jurassic Park movie! 🦖🎥 No wonder the museum’s logo looks so similar to the movie's. Highly recommend visiting—it’s an unforgettable experience!
Cat C — Google review
Very fun museum with incredible amber specimens. The Jurassic park logo was inspired here. There’s also a nice exhibit on making cigars. Takes make 45 mins to see everything.
Aaron P — Google review
This is a short but really interesting visit to Learn from this gorgeous stone. Kind staff, fun facts, and lots to learn.
Kya S — Google review
The visit to this museum was fascinating. They have many interesting amber specimens. On top of that, a piece of the museum was also developed as a cigar factory, which was unexpected. You could see live the process of bonding a cigar - an amazing adventure, I recommend it.
Agata W — Google review
This is a wonderful museum located inside a beautiful historic house. Our guide, Gustavo, was friendly, informative, and he expressed pride in his job. There are some amazing examples of prehistoric amber, an interesting presentation on cigar making, and a gift shop with actual quality items. I highly recommend visiting when in Puerto Plata, but don’t confuse this quality museum with the lower quality, tourist trap, ‘Amber Mine Museum’ or you will likely be very disappointed.
Alan B — Google review
Interesting enough but not what I would go out of my way to see. This was one of the stops in the Cruise land tour package we purchased.
Marie-Tess F — Google review
EDITED TO ADD: The tour is longer now. And includes a section about how cigars are made. It was an OK addition to the tour. If you are sensitive to smells, this might bother you. But I do believe you can skip that part (since it's at the end). ORIGINAL POST: We really enjoyed it. The tour is about 20 to 25 minutes. Very informative and fun. They are doing some construction work, so hopefully when it's done it'll be more amazing. There are a couple areas with some great looking trees, but because of construction and remodeling, we just walked through. Lots of fun... and close to Central Park.

Mares restaurant in Puerto Plata is a top-notch dining spot overseen by Chef Rafael Vasquez. The restaurant boasts a brilliant decor and an outdoor garden for patrons to savor their meals and drinks. Specializing in Caribbean fusion cuisine, the menu offers a variety of dishes such as fish with a French twist and sushi with a Caribbean flair. Located next to the beach, Mares is known for its exquisite selection of seafood-based dishes, particularly the fresh fish cooked in coconut sauce.
A tranquil stunning garden is the biggest highlight for this restaurant. The food is also delicious, and clearly very good quality. However the price is quite high for the Dominican. But the wonderful fenced in garden, with its large variety of labelled trees and bushes, to the koi pond the atmosphere trumps anything I have seen in the Dominican at all.

Hidden gem in the the Dominican Republic! This place was amazing. The food was authentic and delicious. Your sitting in the middle of the city but would never know it with such serine scenery. Dont miss it and be sure to visit the art gallery!

Exelent place. Service and food was perfect
Svante S — Google review
The manager, who I think, is also the chef, because he was wearing a white chef's uniform, did not want to let me in the restaurant. I’m a black Canadian, and I was surprised he told me he had no available seats when most of the tables were neither occupied nor reserved. I went there with my wife, who is a Dominican, and lives in Puerto Plata. When he heard me speaking English he realized I was not Dominican, and all the sudden, he had available seats for us. I wanted to leave and spend my money at a restaurant run by the locals, across the street, but my wife wanted to try the food there... It was an uncomfortable and unpleasant experience... I was ashamed with that kind of treatment. The restaurant is also quite expensive, I paid the equivalent of 200 Canadian dollars for the meal without drinks.

A great hideaway in the hills o Dominican Republic. The restaurant is nestled in amongst local artist's work and botanical garden. The restrooms were spotless.

Restaurant Le Papillon is a charming and unique dining spot that offers a mix of Caribbean and Dominican-inspired cuisine. The restaurant features an outdoor section, making it an ideal choice for a leisurely lunch in the sunshine. With its rustic nautical design, Le Papillon provides a relaxed tropical atmosphere for fine dining. The small eatery boasts quirky decor including large aquariums and historic artifacts, creating an inviting ambiance.
The best food in the Dominican Republic, and easily one of the best restaurants I've been to in the world (about 30 different countries). Very limited seating so reservations are a must, and the owner/chef Tomas was a great host. Worth the trip, and hope to be back again soon.

Amazing food. Well worth leaving our all inclusive resort to have a meat with chef Tomas! Best meal on this island!
Tyler G — Google review
If you are looking for a meal in Puerto Plata, you have many options. But if you are looking for an experience—an evening so enchanting and welcoming that it will become the highlight of your entire trip—then you have only one choice: Le Papillon. Tucked away from the main tourist thoroughfares, stepping into Le Papillon is like discovering a secret garden. The ambiance is immediately captivating. You walk into a lush, tropical courtyard, softly lit by twinkle lights and lanterns, creating an atmosphere that is both romantic and wonderfully intimate. You're not just entering a restaurant; you're being welcomed into an oasis of tranquility and charm. The menu is a masterful blend of European classics (with a superb Austrian/German influence) and the freshest Caribbean ingredients. Every dish that came to our table was a work of art. The Cordon Bleu was crispy, tender, and impossibly flavorful. The fresh-caught fish of the day was cooked to absolute perfection, flaky and delicate, served with a sauce that was both light and complex. From the appetizers to the decadent dessert, the quality and passion in the kitchen are evident in every single bite. It is, without question, a culinary masterpiece. But what truly elevates Le Papillon from a fantastic restaurant to a cherished, unforgettable memory is the owner, Thomas. From the moment we arrived, Thomas greeted us not as customers, but as old friends. He is the consummate host—a man whose genuine warmth and passion for his craft are palpable. He moves through the garden restaurant with an easy grace, stopping at every table to share a story, offer a recommendation, or simply ensure you are having the time of your life. He doesn't just run a restaurant; he curates an evening of joy for every single person there. His recommendations were spot-on, his attention to detail was flawless, and his infectious enthusiasm made the entire experience feel personal and special. Thomas isn't just the owner; he is the heart and soul of Le Papillon. Do not leave Puerto Plata without spending an evening here. In a world of fleeting and impersonal service, Thomas and his incredible team have created something truly rare. This isn't just dinner. It's a magical experience, a masterclass in hospitality, and the best meal you will have on the island. We are already planning our next trip back, just for another evening at Le Papillon. Thank you, Thomas, for everything. You are, indeed, the best. Rating: ★★★★★ (If I could give it six stars, I would!)

My husband and I have celebrated our wedding anniversary at LePapillon for several years now. Every experience never disappoints and I honestly can’t understand ANY negative reviews. The food is always above expectations, and Thomas’ personal touch is definitely noticed. If you really want to experience a special evening out with ALL the trimmings and more…make a RESERVATION and sit back, order the surf and turf, and let Thomas spoil you!

Going to this restaurant is an experience, l've been several times and it seems to be getting better and better, all our entrees and meals were all prepared fresh on the spot. The smoked tuna and salmon was excellent! Our meals were by far probably the best meals we've had to date here on this trip! I do not give this restaurant this rating lightly I'm here for 3 months and go and try 2 restaurants a week and by far it's been the best so far and l'm on my final 3 weeks! Thomas is an excellent chef and also a great guy! It's an experience you will not regret!

The restaurant's Cuban decor adds to its charm, providing a clean and homey ambiance for visitors to relax at any time of the day.
The place is beautiful. The patio has old leafy trees and looks like a nice garden. The Dominican breakfast was also very tasty. Hey, mashed potatoes for breakfast, how can you go wrong? The elderly lady and the young guy provide excellent service and just ooze kindness.

Great coffee and service. Our waiter even spoke french when he heard us talking, he was very nice. We didn't get to taste the food but it looked good. I loved the vibe of the place. I wish we discovered it earlier when we were in Puerto Plata.
Tania K — Google review
Overall the service was good. I gave 3 stars only because the two gentlemen excelled in providing customer service by meeting my needs/preferrence. The two gentlemen that served me were very patient and did what they could to satisfy me. Although there were only 2 other guests there (it took a while before I could order) and both my salad and entree were sent back because it was not prepared correctly, I would still be inclined to give 3 stars due to the exceptional customer service provided.
Neia D — Google review
What a pleasant surprise to stumble upon during a quick trip to the Dominican. The food was amazing, our waiter even better. We sat outside on the patio in the rear in attempt to enjoy the weather and the food. I would def. recommend.

This was my second time at Kaffe. I couldn’t wait to get my favorite Chinola drink! As I expected my experience was great. I love the Cuban decor and feel of the place. It’s very clean and home like. I adore the in home setup. It’s really nice to go at anytime of the day. I went with a friend for lunch. We ordered the chinola shake, then chicken croquetas. The croquetas were like eating chicken crab cakes. Soooo delicious. Then I ordered a ceaser wrap with shrimp and my friend ordered the parmesan risotto. I wrap was great, I do prefer less cheese but if you’re a cheese lover you’d be just fine with it. The risotto had excellent flavor, however I know risotto to not have that much broth, or was almost soupy. But that didn’t stop us from enjoying it. We were too full to order dessert, but the crepes look delicious. We ordered another chinola shake to go. Kaffe is definitely a place to go for a nice ambiance and great food and drinks!

Very nice place. Has this homestyle look which I love. You feel like you’re walking into someone’s house. Very peaceful place. Service was very slow but friendly. Prices seemed very fair for the amount of food I ordered. Atmosphere here really gives you that Dominican vibe. I would absolutely return here.

I was seeking a breakfast spot and had limited options in the historic center. Despite this, I found Kaffe and ordered a breakfast sandwich that was not even on the menu. To my delight, it exceeded my expectations! If you visit Puerto Plata and don't try this sandwich, it's like you never came! You'll be amazed!

Went to this place for food, took them 2 hours to bring out food. Went to the bathroom and also saw roaches alive and dead on the floor. Wanted to cancel my order after this and they made me pay for everything even considering all of this.

We had a group of 7 who ate here and wow we are so glad we did. The drinks were great! I had sangria and it was amazing. Food was excellent! The service was amazing. The pastas were to die for. I would highly recommend eating here. We had a very fun night with great food and service. My fiance had a negroni and the lobster risotto. It was fantastic. Thanks for a great evening!

Beautiful restaurant and ambiance right in the heart of Puerto Plata. I went there for a late dinner with my family. My brother had lobster with French fries. I shared the steak and tostones with my sister. I’ve eaten at fancy restaurants in the Dominican Republic and don’t mind paying but getting 6 tostones and like 3 ounces of beef was shocking. The food was tasty though and the service was excellent

Right on the main square. Service was excellent! We had the fresh local fish (grouper and red snapper) and they were both outstanding. So fresh! Definitely try the appetizer with the plantain and prawn, SO GOOD! 10/10 recommend.

The restraunt have a strong vintage athmospere, owner put a lot of effort in small details They cook pretty decently. There is bell on each table to call for a waiter. The AC configured to actually do decent job. Juice drinks have lot of ice in them. They have menu in english. Suggestion to restraunt owner: it would be good to put some indication that this is restraunt, it was not visually appeared as such from the town square

Excellent service, delicious food, in a beautiful Victorian house in Puerto Plata. The eggplant appetizer was really delicious, as was the stuffed ripe plantains. The risotto al fungi with vegetables, and the quinoa salad, were delicious too. The waiters went above and beyond to make our experience unforgettable. Elvis Peralta definitely knows what he is doing, kudos to you!!
Lorena M — Google review
Food is very average. Their eggplant dip was one of the best things. Cocktails are good, but expensive as it’s in the tourist place. I ordered risotto and ended up regretting it. I do not think it was worth a $70 meal for two people. I will not be going back here.

One of my best Victorina restaurants. This restaurant is so chic , nice and has so tasty food. I well recommend this restaurant downtown Puerto Plata. The most convenient part is that if you are doing some sightseeing everything is walking distance from the restaurant. The have inside tables with AC and tables by the porch and walk side. The view from outside is very good and you have the Cathedral and the Central Park.

Good food and drinks. We went so that we could lounge by the pool, have food/cocktails AND it was very dog friendly! The staff were very responsive and quick even though we were out by the pool the whole time. The pool was warm and deep, but still refreshing!

Charros is such a culinary gem! Ditch your all-inclusive buffets and take a beachside stroll for refreshingly strong drinks and a tasteful fusion of authentic cuisine. We had a party of 8 and were sat at a beautiful table overlooking the moonlit waves through the palms. The service was amazing thanks to Francesca and the other staff. Beyond the the beautiful ambience of the restaurant (there’s also a beautiful pool with cabanas for the day), the true highlight was the delicious cuisine. Everyone ordered a different entree and we were all blown away by the quality and care that was put into the food. My only regret is not taking enough photos of the stunning dishes. Just order everything and you won’t be disappointed — especially the margaritas — make sure to order one.. or 12!

Food was excellent. As good as I would expect to find in a major US, or European city. Beyond my wildest expectations for a smaller town in Caribbean. I was quite surprised. Same owners as Casita Azul and this place is spectacular. Food portions are larger and more selections on the menu. I read the other reviews of “scams”. I have met the owner many times and he does not run a dishonest business. There was either a misunderstanding with the language barrier between client and server, or these are false reviews from competing restaurants. This place has been the only business I have 100% trust in within Puerto Plata. I travel here many times a year for the last 4 years. My plates and sides were amazing. The cheese croquetas, chicken, and tartar salmon was the best tasting meal I’ve had in a long time.

The restaurant is located in the center of Puerto Plata and it is a Victorian House decorated as such. The house has a beautiful courtyard. The ambiance is romantic, but it is a great setting for any special event . Piano player with beautiful instrumental pieces. The customer service was right on point. Very polite and courteous. Very attentive to our needs. Our food was delicious! We ordered bruschetta with tomato and manchego cheese for appetizer. Main course was Seafood Paella with plenty of seafood including lobster, dessert was flan and we had sangrias for drinks. Sorry, forgot pictures of food. Don’t miss out on this restaurant it is worth the visit!

This restaurant WILL TRY TO SCAM YOU! There were many bottles of Chardonnay on the menu ranging from 2000-2500 pesos. The highest priced chardonnay on the menu was 2500 pesos. We asked the waiter to bring us any of the Chardonnay bottles THAT WERE ON THE MENU, and he brought us two different Chardonnays to choose from. The one that we chose tasted okay, but for 2500 pesos we weren't expecting anything spectacular. When we received the check at the end, they charged us 6,285 pesos for the bottle of Chardonnay. We spoke with the waiter and told him that they charged us the wrong amount. He told us, "You chose this bottle of wine out of the two that I brought out". Again.... On the menu the most expensive bottle of Chardonnay was 2500 so it made no sense that we could be charged 6265 pesos. The waiter and manager then told us that this bottle of wine is not on the menu. When the waiter brought out the 2 bottles, they did not tell us that the bottle that we chose was going to be double the amount of the most expensive bottle of Chardonnay on the menu. We looked up the chardonnay that they were trying to charge us 6265 pesos on Google and it goes for 800 pesos at a regular liquor store. This restaurant has no morals, no respect for their costumers, and look for anyway to steal your money. There are so many great restaurants in Puerto Plata, BUT THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM! Save yourself from being scammed and never go to this restaurant!

Beautiful decor and setting in this historic building across from Parque Central. The food was quite good with Dominican and other food styles. The risotto I had was nicely cooked. The prices are costly by Dominican standards, but quite reasonable for tourists. I would suggest skipping their ice cream to head to Mariposa next door for their home made. Sadly, outside noise from motorcycle and car traffic can be loud, but it calms down later in the evening. An great addition to the upgraded downtown.

I went with a friend who lives here f/t. I was craving sushi. We each had sushi for dinner, dessert and drinks. It was great, good service and the food was sooooo good. It's been one of my favourite times here.

They should stick to just making Italian food if they are going to take an 1 hour making sushi. The service wasn’t good. The server just spent her time talking. Didn’t even offer to fill my empty drink. The only reason I left 2 stars was because the sushi was at least good.

The waitress thought we said “vaca(cow)” instead of VODKA the drink. The bartender had a nasty attitude. My ravioli was Cold on the inside and was also wrong! I didn’t ask for pesto, I asked for butter base. Spicy tuna roll IS NOT A SPICY TUNA ROLL! I’m praying we don’t get sick! For $70 USD, it’s absolutely not worth it. In fact, if it was free, it wouldn’t be worth it.

My son joined me for lunch here. I had the penne bolognese and the parmesan with olive oil as an appetizer, my son had a carbonara. We both had some salmon nigiri as well. The pasta was a bit over cooked. Not as mushy as spaghetti in a Dominican spot, but not even a bit al dente. The sauce was good. The parmesan appetizer was awesome. The sushi was okay. Fresh, but too much rice and very thin slices of fish. I got the impression it was an off day, so I'm going back to give it another try. This place has potential. The prices were reasonable.

It's good. Nothing is super overly spectacular. But it's good. Don't go in a rush! It always takes so long to get food 🤦🏽‍♀️ Instead of a large platter with several drinks, the wait staff would bring two cups at a time. Feels like common sense stuff... An unforgettable dining experience at this gem of a restaurant right on the beach in Puerto Plata! The setting was absolutely serene, with stunning ocean views that provided a beautiful backdrop to a delightful meal. Buyer beware. I wrote this review when my wife and I visited the restaurant. The prices were what you would expect for a beach front restaurant in a popular Dominican location. Fast forward a few days....... We returned and met up with a group of friends that arrived on a Cruise Ship, they only had 6 hours on shore. My wife and I had the same food and drinks that we had on our earlier visit and the prices had almost doubled. The practice of ripping off Cruise Ship visitors is terrible, and we will not eat there again.

Transportation in Puerto Plata

Getting around Puerto Plata can be a little daunting if you’re new here. We can help list some of the major public transportation methods if you don’t want to rely on a car.

Nearby airports

Cibao International Airport

International airport
Airport
Cibao International Airport (STI) is situated just outside Santiago de los Caballeros, the second-largest city in the country. It's conveniently located for those planning to stay in Jarabacoa or Puerto Plata, approximately an hour and 20 minutes north. The airport offers a quick and efficient security process with minimal waiting times. However, it's advisable to carry a sweatshirt as the air-conditioning can make it chilly inside.
All I have to say is my country is the BEST! customer service may vary though but other than that everything is a breeze even with the amounts of people accumulated at the exit when two flights land together but the walk way outside compensates because you feel like you're on a runway 🥰
Digmari B — Google review

I went through here recently and unexpectedly after a not so pleasant experience a year ago and vowed never to do so. However the trip from here on August 25 back to the states was much better. I will advise ladies and gentlemen to put all of your cologne/perfume in Ziploc bags even if it's in a box because they will take it if it's not. I almost lost 2 bottles last year but thankfully a wonderful lady also traveling to the US stepped in for me.
Gil M — Google review
This is my 3rd time traveling to STI from MiA, and the trip and process is really simple and easy. Arrivals and departures are simple, but make sure when you arrive for your flight to arrive early because there is always a long line for people leaving the country. The country has a lot of tourism and school coming and going. Always enjoy coming to the DR to work on water projects and hiking in the beautiful mountains. The process to go through customs is very easy and seamless. I can't wait to come back later thus year.

This aipport lounge is very small and there is no smoking lounge. Not good for tourism! Not only that but they have a non stop speaker going off for the whole airport to hear with nonstop messaging blasting into all our ears. Santiago can do much better

Great airport! There’s so many things to like about this airport. I was extremely surprised at how quick we are able to get through security here. There wasn’t a big line and custom was very easy to get through from my experience. After that it’s great to get going from here. Remember that there’s air-conditioning in here so you might wanna bring a sweatshirt. It is really easy to get into. The lines to get checked and may be a touch difficult. There are restrooms available all over the place. There’s plenty of seating for you. There’s not much room to walk around here but most people aren’t doing that. There are a handful of places that you can grab some food.

Customer service really needs some training, no professionalism nor respect towards paying customers. As you walk to your gate or anywhere, don’t be surprised to see half the employees including security on their phones constantly.

Banreservas Aeropuerto Gregorio Luperón

International airport
Airport
Banreservas Aeropuerto Gregorio Luperón is conveniently located just a short 15-minute drive from Puerto Plata Gregorio Luperon Airport (POP), making transfers quick and easy by shuttle bus. The colonial-style hotel and common areas are surrounded by lush tropical gardens, providing a serene atmosphere. Travelers have found the airport to be clean with well-maintained restrooms and a variety of restaurant options for dining while waiting for flights.
I never had issues traveling in and out of this airport. Just remember to fill out your immigration e-card to get in and out with ease. That's the only hiccup if "YOU" forget. They will not let you board or into the country. I love this airport 🛫 very clean. Even the restrooms. Great choices of restaurants for the little time you wait for your flight. Flying into the airport, make sure you already pre-book your cab, but for the most part, it's safe to take a taxi. You pay a premium, though, but it's safe.

Small international airport, and I was in out the line within a few minutes. The gentleman, Ever, that works for America Airlines provided exceptional customer service. The only complaint is that one of the guys that was moving luggage at drop off was haggling people for tips, and he literally moved it no more than five to six feet.

Not a bad experience in this small international airport. The lines can be a bit long depending on your flight as it only serves a few planes at a time. American and Jet Blue are the larger vendors here. Staff was helpful and friendly and speak English mostly if required. Security was a breeze and passport control was not too long. Several bathrooms throughout, some local shops selling over priced local goods in case you didn't do your shopping ahead of time. Duty free area is large and mostly adjacent to most all gates where you can also get some over priced goods to take back. Know that if you buy liquor here and have to transfer in MIA or somewhere.. when you get your luggage you MUST put the liquor in your checked bags when you get it back before rechecking it. Period. Some restaurants and snack places. Cold AC.

Excellent airport. Small but very welcoming. Be Aware, that if you are flying out of this airport, do not come too early. The checking kiosks and airline agent desk will be closed until the next flight are set to leave. 3 hours is the earliest you can check in. So stay at your hotel until then. Staff was very kind and pleasant to deal with, at least most of them. Customs was quick too. Also, Be Aware, if you are bringing MamaJuana or any other type of alcohol, they will usually let you through, but they do recommend the send the bottles with your checked luggage. I bought 2 small bottles of MamaJuana, the shop said it would clear customs even through a carry on bag. And it did clear Dominican Republic’s customs, but it did not clear through Miami customs. They threw it away. It needs to be checked in.

They were so rude at customs! As most people who work in airports are. This my first time in DR and I’m asking the lady a simple yes or no question. To make sure I’m heading out the right way to be picked up. She completely dismisses my question twice asking me for passport. Gave her my passport and did fingerprints. Then I ask her again cus answer the damn question. She says yes and rolls her eyes. And I just say “whatever, rude”. Like I don’t give a damn what you got going on, you don’t need to be a rude and stank like that to someone asking a simple question. Let alone a place they never been to, like it’s literally your job to HELP. There’s absolutely no service in that area, so it was a little scary. Thankfully they had WiFi by the arrivals area (which makes sense if you need to call somebody). I did see the person that needed to pick me up and I ran into another person who works for the airport and he was rlly nice. That lady attitude put a dank on my night a bit tho cus in my head I’m just hoping this better not be a constant occurrence.

Small airport, but nice people and very helpful. Good restaurant and good food. They also have people singing to give you a warm welcome. The entire airport was mad clean. I truly recommend people to travel from here.

The lounge area was not great. One young employee did all the work while the bartender and another employee stood around and chatted for over an hour. The food selection was very poor and smelly from being unrefrigerated too long. Saving Grace, the bathrooms were very clean.
