Historical landmark
Fortaleza de San Felipe is a historic Spanish fortress built in the late 1500s to defend against pirates and invaders. Located on a hill at the Puntilla Del Malecon, it overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and protected the entrance to Puerto Plata's seaport. The fort offers fully narrated tours around its grounds, showcasing history displays and old cannons pointing out to sea.
This fort is in San Felipe Park which is a short walk from the cruise ship port. The sidewalk is skinny in places so not accessible for wheelchairs. Once at the park it’s easy walking to get to the fort itself. Who wouldn’t like seeing a Spanish fort dating to the late 1500s which was built to defend against pirates. The fort was completed in 1577. There is a $2 per person fee and you get a headset so you can listen to the story of the fort. My headset didn’t work well. I think it was a bad cable or the audio port. It was fine as the fort is interesting with lots of things to look at and read. Like most of the Dominican, the fort could use money to fix things up. It’s a great place to get photos of the water, beaches and cruise ship port. There are public bathrooms in the fort.
Bill L — Google review
Not only is the first interesting and historically significant, you should go there just for the history alone, but there's a beautiful view and a great breeze off the water to keep things cool and comfortable. It was about 100 pesos and worth the price to get to see the views from the turrets. There is parking and there are public bathrooms too, and souvenir stalls too if you like that kind of thing.
Michelle M — Google review
Well maintain, nice to walk and not feel like a tour is going to ask for a fee or approach you. Beautiful place from puerto plata and full of a lot of potential.
Neil G — Google review
The San Felipe Fort was a stop on our private tour of Puerto Plata. If you’ve been to San Juan and seen the large fort there, this is much smaller, but very similar in age and stone composition. Over 450 years old, it is on a cliff next to ocean so there are plenty of great views. You can also buy tickets to go through it for a half hour tour.
Stephanie C — Google review
Stopped here on a cruise excursion. Well kept area.
Vonzell L — Google review
It's a beautiful place overlooking the ocean with an awesome history.

Nice site you can easily walk there
Diego G — Google review
This place is really neat. It only cost $1.00 USD to get in and walk around. Nice views of the harbour and sea. Just a nice piece of history to enjoy for about 45 minutes or so. Lots of local peddlers around trying to sell their wares. I love chatting them up and buying a few trinkets.

Ocean World Adventure Park in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic is a vibrant attraction offering various animal encounters such as swimming with sharks and dolphins. The north coast area also provides numerous activities like fishing, snorkeling, diving, surfing, golfing at Playa Dorada, and more. Visitors can enjoy go-karting at Fun City or explore the historic district of Puerto Plata with its Victorian pink alleyway and Umbrella Street.
I can not say enough good things about this place! We booked this excursion when I was on a cruise with Carnival, and we spent the day at this park. It was absolutely beautiful. There are so many things to do for children little and older. There is a pool, a lagoon, a water obstacle course, shows featuring sharks seals dolphins and you can even snorkel with fish, you can swim with dolphins. The opportunities are endless not to mention the buffet was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this!! They also get amazing photos and videos of whatever encounter you do! Enjoy!!! Sorry for the crazy sentences i am just excited to share! lol

Excellent experience at Ocean World Adventure Park! Amazing Staff in every area (shout out Robin Santos with Guest Services and Yann with the Dolphin Swim). Park is well-maintained, clean and beautiful all around. The Dolphin Swim was super fun, interactive and overall, great experience! I would definitely visit again anytime. Great people, tasty food, nice ambience and spectacular views.
Mario G — Google review
Great time all around. Do the experiences! Yes they cost a bit, but well worth it. And get the pictures too. Again, yes they are expensive but those are awesome memories. Staff was awesome and very friendly, helpful, funny, and personable. Skip the buffet though, totally not worth it. Definitely recommend the dolphin and sea lion experience.
Andrew B — Google review
There was a little misunderstanding at the reception — my husband thought that by paying for the dolphin encounter he would be able to take photos of us, but it turned out that phones were not allowed in the area at all. He was very upset, and the situation could have completely ruined our visit. Thankfully, supervisor Juan L. Rojas stepped in and handled everything with true professionalism, patience, and a sincere smile. Juan L. Rojas turned what could have been a disappointing experience into one of the highlights of our trip. He is a true professional who knows exactly how to treat guests and resolve issues with grace and respect. This is the kind of attitude that makes people want to come back again and again. Thanks to him, we left with wonderful memories, amazing photos, and a deep appreciation for the way he handled the situation. He truly deserves recognition and a well-earned bonus! 🌟

Great place to go if you are in Puarto Plata, just 10min away with taxi from Taino Bay. A bit expensive, if you are coming here as a cruise passenger. Anyhow nice place to relax by man made beach, or use the pools. Day pass includes lunch.
Arnolds H — Google review
Fantastic experience. Martin was a great guide and the trainers were knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and made the experiences so much fun. Dolphins, sea lions, sharks, birds and capybara!
Michelle D — Google review
Amazing place we got to swim with the dolphins then go swimming there was a bird sanctuary there really cool also they had sharks stingrays and capbra just a fun place
Jennifer K — Google review
Wow, wow, wow! Fantastic place play and to eat. The food was absolutely top-notch! The buffet is one time through, so fill up the plates! The rice amazing, veggies, fruit...wow! If you want to swim with dolphins, sting rays, sharks, snorkeling with tropical fish, or play at the private beach or water slides! You can also feed the birds and capybara's! So fun, safe, and delicious food and drinks. Johanny was absolutely amazing and so helpful, definitely sit in his section for vip treatment 🥰 The staff is so friendly while also keeping the little ones safe. Highly recommend! They have lockers and showers as well!

Playa Dorada is a stunning beach in the Dominican Republic, known for its palm-lined golden sands and crystal-clear waters. It's not just a beach; it's a destination offering luxury and relaxation. The area provides various activities, from kitesurfing to exploring waterfalls at 27 Charcos de Damajagua and snorkeling at Cayo Arena. Visitors can also immerse themselves in local culture by visiting nearby villages, trying Dominican cuisine, or learning about cocoa and coffee plantations.
Excellent ocean swimming on the North coast of Dominican Republic. Mount Isabel de Torres provides protection from hurricanes, we are here during hurricane Melissa, Oct. 2025 and only have yellow flags along the beachfront. Great Beach.
Paul B — Google review
Very nice stretch of beach. There are some coral rocks in some areas, and a lot of seaweed washes up, but they rake it and keep it clean. The beach itself is quiet and stretches for quite a distance and encompasses several resorts.
Dennis S — Google review
We had a really enjoyable day at this beach and would absolutely return, but there are a few things that kept it from being a full five-star experience. What truly stood out was the experience— not just in what was available, but in the people. The beach had a lively, local charm with vendors walking by offering everything from handmade chachkes and sunglasses to snacks, drinks, and even photo ops with animals like parrots and iguanas. It made the beach feel vibrant and alive, and our kids loved the excitement. There were plenty of options for relaxing — cabanas, beach chairs, and umbrellas were available to rent, and a full-service beachfront restaurant was just steps away. While we appreciated the convenience, everything came at an added cost and most of the facilities, including the chairs, cabanas, restrooms, and changing areas, could really use a refresh. They worked, but they were definitely showing their age. The food was okay — nothing to rave about, but good enough to keep us going through a day in the sun. What made the meal more enjoyable was the service. Our favorite waiter, **Christian**, was kind, funny, and went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed. He really elevated the whole experience. There are also lots of little shops nearby if you want to browse or pick up souvenirs, and the waves were perfect for swimming and playing. Overall, this beach has character, color, and charm — and with a few upgrades, it could easily be five stars.
Kimberly H — Google review
In December and January the water was quite full of algae. Maybe it’s the season, I don’t know. Not in all the parts it was full with algae, but anyway it was disturbing. So, sometimes we were going to Sosua beach as it was wonderful there….
Alexandra S — Google review
Great beach, not to crowed at the end of july, good for relaxing and enjoy the area.
Emerson. — Google review
I recently visited this beautiful white sand beach, and I must say, it's impeccably maintained despite the numerous resorts nearby. Arriving with a tourist group, we were delighted to find a designated area with beach chairs and umbrellas exclusively for tourists. The availability of tap water for a refreshing post-beach bath was a thoughtful touch. Additionally, the convenience of having a restaurant nearby serving snacks and drinks added to the overall enjoyable experience. I highly recommend this beach for a relaxing getaway.
Madhuli P — Google review
Great beach. Water was 85. Food & drinks were good. Fresh water showers to clean up.
Chris K — Google review
Stunning beach that is only accessible for the resorts in the Playa Dorada gated complex. Technically, locals can access it if they enter on the west side of the public beach and walk a couple of kilometers, but that's not an issue for me. Pristince sandy beaches with beautiful warm blue water with waves to jump in. There are kiosks to rent jetskis, parasailing, snorkel tours, etc.

Umbrella Street in Puerto Plata is a must-see attraction located in the historic part of the city. The street is adorned with brightly-colored umbrellas, creating a picturesque setting that's perfect for photography. This vibrant spot has become popular among tourists, especially when cruise ships dock, bringing a lively atmosphere. However, during quieter times, it offers a glimpse into local life and becomes an ideal place for people-watching and unique photo opportunities.
Beautiful street. You can find food and cold presidente' here. There are plenty of stores around all geared towards tourist. There were people with parrots and monkeys for you to take pictures with for a tip.

Umbrella Street in Puerto Plata is a vibrant and colorful spot perfect for photos and a relaxing stroll. The hanging umbrellas create a cheerful atmosphere and offer shade while you explore the charming street lined with shops and cafes. It’s a popular tourist attraction, small but worth a quick stop to enjoy the lively vibe and capture memorable pictures.
Ezekiel G — Google review
Really loved how well kept and modern this is. A couple of people selling photos for $5. I got one with a macaw and also someone with an umbrella that took a great video. Well worth the $5. I was grabbed by someone who helps with tours and photos. I guess a tour guide. Who also took me to Pink Steet where I took photos with 4 years old Lizzie her pet monkey. Over proved tourists shops aimed at the cruise ships. Pharmacist was great and I bought the items over the counter and paid in dollars. I e cream cart, juice bar and local supermarket. I parked in the free car park. I took a fabulous photo outside of the coffee and cacao / chocolate shop. I wished I’d stayed longer and bought more. But a tour guide arrived with a lot of tourists and it got a bit too noisy. Vendors sis not lost prices which I dislike as I prefer to browse and compare. But that’s the same in other countries. Pay by card or dollars or pesos. There’s a duty free store next to Pink Street that has price variation if paying by cash or card. A must see and do. I’ll pop back on my next visit.

This stop was at the top of my list! The colors and activity was bustling with energy. It was very crowded for taking pictures. Beautiful to see in person

I would say this is one of the nicest places in Puerto Plata. It has a nice variety of shops, including little souvenir shops, places to pick up something to eat, and everything else you would find elsewhere, all in one street.

The Puerto Plata Cable Car, also known as Teleferico, is the only one of its kind in the Caribbean. It offers a scenic 15-minute ride to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres, where visitors can explore botanical gardens and visit the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. From this vantage point, at 2,600 feet above sea level, guests can take in breathtaking panoramic views of Puerto Plata city and its coastline stretching over 100 kilometers along the Atlantic Ocean.
Definitely worth a visit. We visited it during a Cruise stop. Do to heavy traffic on route and long line for the Cable Cars, could not plan a lot of visits during our stop but glad we made this one. Beautiful views from the top.
T S — Google review
THIS CABLE CAR SERVICE IS CLOSED. Don’t know why it still says it is opened on Google Maps. The people there told that it will not be operational for the next 2.5 years. There is bus service that takes you to the mountains which cost us around 20 USD for one person. The ride is good but you won’t get much time to spend on the mountain near the statue. The price of the souvenir was little high in the stores near the statue.
Neby V — Google review
The place is beautiful, but beware of the famous Tour guides, they tell they work for the park and blah blah, they have uniforms and everything but theyxare not employees they are locals looking to make and extra buck. The machine is been down for a long time. Honestly google the mountain for directions no need of a tour guide. They see you as a tourist and they jacked up the prices. Do not buy in the souvenirs stores they are not worth it.
Neil G — Google review
Still closed. I went to a tourist spot and asked the teller. She advised it’s been closed a year because people don’t want to pay to use the cable car. She said probably for two more years. Her English was good and my Spanish is dreadful but I relayed on what I was told. I drove up to the gate at about 3pm on a Wednesday and took the below photo.
Ebony E — Google review
Cable car was not working so we drove to the top Amazing view of the city
Piyush G — Google review
Nice affordable activity to do with your family. Once at the top, there is a spectacular view and you can walk along the paths through the gardens and to the caves and lagoon. I gave 4 stars because the directions to these sites are really not very specific. It took us a while and many wrong turns before we got to the caves 🙃🙃🙃
Murielle V — Google review
Views are amazing if you are driving a rental or coming you dont need any person in a green polo taking you up. You are good with just taking yourself up. At the top there is a hike on the top that takes you around the area to show you the water falls, typical Dominican house of the past, and natural areas as well. Also the shops at the top way over charge like 20+ dollars for things that are worth 3 dollars else where. Always bargain.
Mateo R — Google review
Amazing ride to top! Beautiful tropical area with lots of paths, a traditional kitchen, pond, and observation areas. We spent 2.5 hours exploring the area. A lot cheaper to buy tickets on-site versus with a tour.

Malecón de Puerto Plata is a picturesque beachside boardwalk that stretches from Long Beach to the city center. It offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Statue of Neptune, as well as palm-bordered beaches with clear waters. The area is lined with a variety of bars and restaurants, making it perfect for leisurely walks, bike rides, or people-watching. Visitors can also explore the colonial museum at Fortaleza and stroll through town to visit shops and the local church.
Wonderful area. Can't wait to bring my electric bike here on my next visit!
Peter C — Google review
Puerto Plata, we had such high hopes after seeing beautiful stuff online. Unfortunately it turned out to be a bitter disappointment. The supposedly beautiful Malecon with its beautiful beaches is nothing more than a very long walk past a landfill they call a shoreline. The beaches are literally miles of garbage. The few exceptions are the spots where people have a beachbar. From the grass right next to the pathway untill the water, over almost the entire length of the Malecon is filled with trash It's heartbreaking because the nature and the sights are so beautiful. If the authorities manage to solve this, it can be one of the most beautiful spots in the DR. But for now it's just a sad reminder of the wastfullness of man and the ongoing environmental problems they have created.
Super P — Google review
Great place to walk but a lot of garbage on the sides. It is all locals who party along here most nights but busiest day is Sunday. They just throw their bottles and styrofoam packages all over the beach and sides of roads and don’t care. I want to cry when I see such a beautiful walkway and view and see nothing but garbage everywhere. Very surprising considering the many tour ships they get there. It is a common thing that Dominicans accept all over the country. The President should give refunds for all bottles and eliminate styrofoam packaging on the island. They should also have many more garbage cans on the Malecon. The many poor people would be happy to pick it all up and receive some compensation and the island would be beautiful again. The many washrooms are all closed and in bad shape and cannot be used. Many of the restaurants do not have washrooms so be careful if you have any issues.
Mark P — Google review

Went for lunch and had some cervezas and tacos, hard and soft shells. Service and atmosphere were great. Nice views of the water and roadway, but the traffic was a little noisy. There's a pier across the street and a nice boardwalk where you can walk off your libations.

Neat malecón with views of ocean and mountains all the way down. However, the 4 lane road is very scary to cross, especially with speeding drivers and few and inadequate crosswalks.

Taíno Bay Cruise Port, located in the heart of San Felipe near the old ship port, has become a popular destination for cruise ship passengers. The port offers easy access to General Gregorio Luperon Avenue and is surrounded by numerous restaurants and shops offering duty-free goods. While some construction standards may seem lax, the area provides a tropical paradise for tourists with friendly staff and amenities such as a pool and beach area.
Since our last visit to DR ... decades ago ... to find Taino Bay immediately after docking in Puerto Plata was definitely a delightful surprise! This area felt like we were poolside at an all-inclusive resort (which course the drinks were not included but the prices were reasonable and there was poolside service!). There was choices of the usual resort style party pool with blasting tunes and dancers or quiet cabanas just a short walk away. Will definitely return when porting in the DR again!
D D — Google review
All a bit contrived and manufactured for me, it really is a 'made for' the cruise terminal and cruise guests, not really the real Puerto Plata or the Dominican Republic. Yes it's all very clean, lots of tourist boutiques, bars and restaurants but it's not the real Dominican Republic. The whole area is enclosed by large fences, and unlike the other islands that we visited on our Norwegian Cruise Lines cruise (not that we'd ever go with NCL again) you can't freely walk out into the local area and town, unless you're going on an organised tour. When we go on holiday and visit a new country, a new city or region, we like to see 👀 the local area, taste the local food, drink the local wine or enjoy a local beer, see local people and, if only for a day, see what life is like locally - we just didn't get to see any of that here. Yes it's very clean, the level of services are good but we could have been anywhere, at any theme park anywhere else in the world. It really felt like a Disney or Warner Bros theme park. But that's just my perception. Is it somewhere we'd return or visit again? We'll not the cruise terminal or port, but yes the Dominican Republic, we saw very little but what we saw was just enough to wet our appetite. Level 10 Google reviewer with over 1,200 reviews with 2 million views plus 14,000 photos with more than 60 million views and still going strong 💪. Check out my other reviews 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟.

Taino Bay is absolutely breathtaking, a tropical paradise that blends natural beauty with vibrant culture. The turquoise waters sparkle under the sun, perfectly matched by soft sandy beaches and lush greenery. Its stunning views create a peaceful escape, while the port itself is beautifully designed, welcoming, and filled with charm. Whether relaxing by the shore or exploring the scenic surroundings, Taino Bay captures the essence of Caribbean beauty, making every moment there feel unforgettable.

We visited Taino Bay on our Virgin Voyages cruise and were immediately greeted by the warmth and hospitality of the people of Puerto Plata. From the moment we stepped off the ship, we were met with big smiles, lively dancers, and a truly festive atmosphere. Yes, there are locals offering excursions, but they’re very respectful and will politely move along if you’re not interested, which made the experience feel relaxed and enjoyable. Taino Bay itself is huge and conveniently located right at the pier, so you don’t have to walk far at all. The port area offers so much to do: bars, shops, swimming pools, a lazy river, and even a monkey and bird exhibit (with a small extra fee). It feels more like a resort than just a port stop! The staff throughout the port were attentive, friendly, and went out of their way to make sure we had a great time. The drinks were fantastic, highly recommend the fresh pineapple piña coladas and coconuts for a true tropical treat. All in all, Taino Bay was one of our favorite stops. Beautiful setting, excellent amenities, and genuine hospitality. We had an amazing time and would love to come back!

Taino Bay Cruise Port is a nice hub of different activities to do coming off of a cruise ship. It's the main meeting place for excursions, but you can book ones here as well, do some lazy river, drinks, eat (I recommend Cantina Latina), and of course shop.

This is a town within the port, beautiful pool and swimming environment that's lush. A variety of shops that r tailored for tourists only. If you want to remain here your day will be filled and well worth it. We took a pre booked trip outside of town and headed for the hills where we jumped on ATV's ohhh we had so much fun and the excitement levels were high. Good guides that guided us well but still enabled us a level of independence. There's lots to do and the country side is bliss.

One of the best cruise ports I have visited. This place is huge. It has pretty much everything you need. Food, alcohol, attractions, music, dancers, stores, sand, sun, great views, annoying sales people, animals, and a very relaxing vibe. The place is safe and well maintained. The prices are a little hight but for one day of fun, it’s worth it. Very impressed with Taino Bay.

really fun but one of the cars sucked and this girl pushed me. but other than that not bad fun city :D
Juno M — Google review
It's a few old go carts... you drive around in circles for 7 minutes. Don't expect major WOW! factor for the cars or anything. They shake you up ALOT. Bring a pillow if you're sensitive to that. Nothing special... but definitely something fun with the right group of people. It's 200 pesos for 7 minutes in the singles car (150 pesos for the slower doubles car, if you have a small child). We didn't see any snack place, but if you bring a couple snacks, there is an area where you can sit. There's also a playground. It was pretty clean. The person at the ticket counter had a mask on. The guys working at the cars did not. It's alright. We were the only people there at 1pm on a Monday.... however, we've never seen more than 2 or 3 cars in the parking area on any given day.
Veronica M — Google review
Good for hangout with the family. I went there at 1 pm... since other users reviews said trouble with the lines... found the place empty and we have a lot of fun. Go-Karts looks safe. Staff was very nice and gave us all the instructions we need. Issues: I belive they're short of personnel (no one at the cafeteria) and the bathroom were dirty (taking 2 stars for that).
Hugo P — Google review
Great place for some minor adrenaline. The staff is very courteous. We didn’t get the price we saw on the flyer which was u limited rides for $25 USD. Instead she gave us 2hrs of u limited rides for $600 Pesos per person. Not bad! After all we didn’t even last the two hours. If you ask they will put the speed all the way up!
Rochainys M — Google review
Great place to ride go karts for the price. Go when they are not busy because they have limited staff. If your kart is slow ask them to speed it up. Tip please!
Daylon M — Google review
Very Nice place for your kids to do karting. Just one suggestion do not go when there is too much sun. They offer 3 differents circuits and all of them are less than 200 pesos for 7 minutes. I would suggest also To not pay for all them at the first time. One at time would be better. Also note tickets are non refundable. Not even in rain's case
Laurie M — Google review
Awesome place! Karts are very fast and staff is good. 3 of us went when it wasn't busy and got the hour long pass and used the karts pretty much the full hour. If anyone is waiting they limit your round to 7 minutes so you would definitely have your riding time cut down.

When visiting Puerto Plata, a must-visit destination is the Macorix House of Rum. This tour offers an escape from the afternoon heat and provides insight into the creation process of locally made Dominican rums. Visitors can sample various flavors such as Coco Splash and Pineapple Rums. The guided tour, which costs $8 per person, covers the history of rum, the company, barrel aging, and different types of rum.
What a fantastic tour! They dive into the history of the company and its founder and share the various types of rum they craft and their different uses. Plus, the best part? You can sample a delightful array of rums, even if the sips are tiny! It’s such a fun experience filled with flavor and knowledge!
Mark S — Google review
🍹✨ We started with a historical video about how the rum is made and its rich history—I learned so much I didn’t know before. 📽️ Then came the best part: tasting every flavor of rum they create! 🍍🍎 From apple rum to pineapple rum, each one was unique and delicious. After the tasting, we visited the little store and tried their sangria made with their rum—it was amazing! 🍷 Such a fun and flavorful experience.
Cat C — Google review
It was a fantastic tour! A lot of interesting facts about the production of rum, and at the end testing many types of this liquor.
Agata W — Google review
Macorix House of Rum is a major player in town and their distillery is pretty big given the limited size of the island. The building is dark and they don’t allow flash photography so you’ve got limited opportunities for photos. Their tasting room however does allow photography and they have some nice areas with some historic background on not just the distillery but the island too. I don’t drink, but my rum drinking wife said it was great. Total tour time = 10 minutes.
Nosivadnomis — Google review
Thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Very tasty rum choices. Alfred out tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. The store was a vibe along with great music to entertain the patrons.

Great tour. Lots of yummy rum to try.
Teresa W — Google review
Very touristy but a fun outing. The tour only lasts 15 minutes as these things go and you end up in a tasting room to try several different rums. Then the place across the street is a very large store and bar.

Museo del Ámbar Dominicano, located in a Victorian building, is a must-visit attraction in Puerto Plata. It houses a unique collection of valuable Dominican amber, known for its exceptional transparency. The museum offers an immersive experience into the world of this semiprecious resin, transporting visitors back to the time of the Taino people. Visitors can explore ancient artifacts and stunning amber jewelry while learning about the island's rich amber deposits.
The Dominican Amber Museum truly exceeded my expectations. It’s located in a beautiful old Victorian house that gives the whole visit a unique charm. I learned so much about amber, and seeing ancient insects trapped inside pieces that are millions of years old was amazing. The famous blue amber—found only in the Dominican Republic—is absolutely stunning. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, making the tour enjoyable and informative. There's also a lovely little shop with genuine amber jewelry. Perfect for families, couples, or solo travelers. Definitely a must-see if you're in Puerto Plata!
Levis A — Google review
The Amber Museum, and it was so much more than I expected! 🏛️✨ Seeing fossilized insects inside the amber and learning about the process of how it's made was absolutely fascinating. 🐞🪨 It’s a great place to admire these beautiful stones while getting a history lesson. One of my favorite parts? Finding out that an amber piece from this museum was borrowed for the Jurassic Park movie! 🦖🎥 No wonder the museum’s logo looks so similar to the movie's. Highly recommend visiting—it’s an unforgettable experience!
Cat C — Google review
Very fun museum with incredible amber specimens. The Jurassic park logo was inspired here. There’s also a nice exhibit on making cigars. Takes make 45 mins to see everything.

This is a short but really interesting visit to Learn from this gorgeous stone. Kind staff, fun facts, and lots to learn.
Kya S — Google review
The visit to this museum was fascinating. They have many interesting amber specimens. On top of that, a piece of the museum was also developed as a cigar factory, which was unexpected. You could see live the process of bonding a cigar - an amazing adventure, I recommend it.
Agata W — Google review
This is a wonderful museum located inside a beautiful historic house. Our guide, Gustavo, was friendly, informative, and he expressed pride in his job. There are some amazing examples of prehistoric amber, an interesting presentation on cigar making, and a gift shop with actual quality items. I highly recommend visiting when in Puerto Plata, but don’t confuse this quality museum with the lower quality, tourist trap, ‘Amber Mine Museum’ or you will likely be very disappointed.
Alan B — Google review
Interesting enough but not what I would go out of my way to see. This was one of the stops in the Cruise land tour package we purchased.
Marie-Tess F — Google review
EDITED TO ADD: The tour is longer now. And includes a section about how cigars are made. It was an OK addition to the tour. If you are sensitive to smells, this might bother you. But I do believe you can skip that part (since it's at the end). ORIGINAL POST: We really enjoyed it. The tour is about 20 to 25 minutes. Very informative and fun. They are doing some construction work, so hopefully when it's done it'll be more amazing. There are a couple areas with some great looking trees, but because of construction and remodeling, we just walked through. Lots of fun... and close to Central Park.

The Cathedral of St. Philip the Apostle, situated in the heart of Puerto Plata's historic center, is a stunning example of modern Victorian architecture and holds significant cultural and historical value. Originally established in 1502, the current cathedral was constructed in the 20th century after being destroyed by fire in 1863. It stands as one of the most popular religious attractions on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, drawing numerous tourists eager to explore its rich history and architectural beauty.
Beautiful Catholic Church, conveniently located at the heart of the original town and park. Enough spaces to be seated and parking safe in the area close by.

On a cruise from New York to the Caribbean last week. First stop was Puerto Lata in the Dominican Republic. We found this delete full old church on the town plaza. Very nice interior.
Perry H — Google review
The San Felipe Cathedral is the main Church of Puerto Plata, visible from almost everywhere in town with its two bell towers. It dominates the classic central square of Spain colonial cities with the square in size Independence park occupied with many locals and so lively. The Cathedral stands on the site of the former 16 c one which was destroyed during the Independence war. New Cathedral has a modern architecture and nice stained glass. We were lucky to visit it during the Mass.
Dejan B — Google review
Very beautiful Parish. Well kept and very historical and open to receive anyone who wants to worship.
Jeffrey ( — Google review
The cathedral is located next to Parque Central Independencia. The current structure was built in 1870. The original wooden building burned down during the Restoration in 1863. The cathedral has undergone a pair of renovations since then. The first took place from 1929, halted during the 1946 Dominican Republic earthquake and finished by 1956. The latest renovation repaired damage from the 2003 Dominican Republic earthquake and finished by 2008.

It’s the only movie theater in Puerto Plata, it’s nice & have 3 movies rooms. Most of the movies are in Spanish but sometimes you can find in English with Spanish subtitles. The price for the tickets is reasonable and they offer a big variation of snacks

Went to the midnight opening night showing of Spiderman No Way Home. It was a great experience. Nice big screen. Nice cheap prices. (200 pesos each, less than $4) Fresh popcorn. Great crowd. No the seats don't recline and there is no assigned seating. Just a good, simple theater.
Michael B — Google review
Pretty clean; somewhat small movie theater. Audio/sound is good; some movies felt alittle too loud, especially since the individual theaters are quite small. Video is good. Snacks are regular movie theater snacks. Be cautious for big movie releases. We went to see Avengers End Game, and they sold extra tickets for seats that didn't exist. They ended up putting folding chairs IN THE AISLE, from the last to the front row, and a row of chairs in the front as well. Didn't seem too safe.

Cofresí Beach, located about 5km east of Puerto Plata, is a popular destination with a 12 km stretch of sand perfect for various activities such as walking, jogging, swimming, diving, and snorkeling. On Sundays, the beach turns into a lively house party with locals enjoying picnics, barbecues, and merengue music that lasts well into the night.
A nice beach in Puerto Plata. The sand is fine and clean. The waves are big enough to play in but not too dangerous. There are areas to the side where there is always calm water. Rocks are few near the shore but the sand bars are more of rock bars. Also not too busy. It was a great place to play in the waves and bodyboard with kids. Ocean world is right there too.

Nice people, English is good, Room is beautiful & comfortable, food is ok, clean environment, shuttle drivers very nice, got a grand tour of the VIP area very nice! Not willing to buy into the resort packages offered.

First come, first serve. I roomed the farthest from the beach, Crown suites. If you don't get there when it opens, 8am, you will not get prime cabanas vs the people who have rooms next door to beach. The beach is divided into 5 sections? So this beach serves everybody (visitors and members)!!! About 4 bars and one sushi stand. If that's not your bag, casablanca is about 2 flights up the hill. We alternated btw pool and beach because of the timing. It also was the closest gym to workout? Ying Yang spa. Didn't see Presidency. Overall still great. Always avoided Puerto Plata when I was younger, I now know that was a mistake. It is just as quiet here (jan). I RECOMMEND

Nestled along the vibrant Malecon of Puerto Plata, Cosita Rica Beach is a hidden gem that perfectly embodies the essence of relaxation and fun. With its expansive golden sands and gentle waves, this beach is ideal for families looking to enjoy a day in the sun. The shallow waters make it safe for children to splash around while adults can indulge in various activities like volleyball or simply lounging under an umbrella with a refreshing drink.
This is the top beach of El Malecon, and took its name from the Cosita Rica, the first restaurant ever established there. The scenery is beautiful, golden sand and shallow swimming areas. I often visit Carihuela there for the excellent drinks, also I like the Swank VIP and Cosita Rica Restaurant. ElevenPOP is another great restaurant with very nice beach front and service.

We took the Buggy Tour in Puerta Plata. Best excursion ever! Staff was fantastic and the photos/videos taken made it easy to sit back and enjoy the trip! Highly recommend!

We recently booked the Dune Buggy tour through Marysol Tours while we were docked in Amber Cove, and it was amazing!! Wonderful tour guides who made sure we had everything we needed, easy transportation to and from the port, and back to the port with plenty of time to spare before having to get back on the ship. I would definitely recommend booking a tour with them on your next cruise/vacation!

Our party of 4 had such an amazing time! Our tour guide Caliente was the best! The tour was long enough to where we saw so much! We saw locals in their neighborhoods, the jungle, the beach! The beach stop was beautiful!!!!!!! We did the double rider ATV and we can’t wait to come back and try the buggy and horses. The whole staff was welcoming, polite, and worth every dollar. 10/10 recommend
Katherine B — Google review
Marysol Tours is hands down, the BEST excursion experience when visiting Amber Cove! From booking the excursion via email with Francisco, pick up by Walter and Coley....to the reception by the rest of the team it was AMAZING from start to finish. My family and I were on a 7-day cruise on the Carnival Mardi Gras from 6/11 - 6/18. Four members of our group of 10 booked an excursion through the cruise (zip lining, horseback riding and a local meal) and 6 of us chose to build an excursion with Marysol (dune buggy tour, horseback riding and we also chose to have a local meal, but were so excited and exhausted from our experience during the other parts of our excursion that we dragged ourselves back to the boat afterwards, LOL!). Walter and Coley were our tour guides for the dune buggy tour. They were patient and kind with us and made sure that we secured all our items at the business so that nothing would be damaged during the excursion. They helped us put on all our gear and ensured that we were aware of all instructions before taking off. They took us through all the local areas, rivers and farms. We were able to sample fresh mangoes and coconut water in addition to local wines. Walter and Coley were so patient! Coley captured excellent photos of the entire event! Please purchase, the photo package, it is a great value and so worth it! The video compilation of our excursion was priceless. It has made those in our family who were not able to go on the cruise want to book for next year just so they can take an excursion with Marysol Tours. For the horseback riding, none of our family had ever ridden a horse. The horses are so well trained and the staff made us very comfortable mounting and dismounting. They gave us instruction on how to gently guide our horses when they got off track, which was rare. It was and AWESOME ride along the beach. I must say, that I have been on several cruises over the years and this has been the BEST excursion I have ever been on. Working with Marysol Tours was the highlight of our cruise. This company is a class act. The customer service was top notch, Francisco connected with me before and after the excursion to ensure our satisfaction. We will definitely be back! Please book with them as you will not be disappointed. Our family who booked the excursion offered by the cruise line were taken back to the boat in a fraction of the time than we were and paid more than we did for their excursion. So definitely book with Marysol! It's so worth it!

My family and I really enjoyed the dunne buggy tour! Thank you to Caliente who was our main guide and the others who made sure we stayed safe but also had fun! Got real dirty because it had just rained but that made the experience worthwhile. Also they have showers and changing rooms for afterwards so it was all good. Very lengthy tour for the price. Helmets and goggles and port shuttle included. We also enjoyed our stop to learn about some of the culture and felt safe immersed in the neighborhood. Would definitely do this again and recommend it to everyone.

We booked a trip through Marisol Tours for the 4 x 4 ATV tour in Dominican Republic. Our ship was docked at Amber Cove. This was our favorite tour on our cruise. Our tour guide, Caliente, was awesome! He took customer service seriously . Very friendly. He also had a young guy who was on a motor cycle that was taking lots of pictures. They sold us all of the pictures and videos for a reasonable price for our group of five. What you need to know. * when meeting them from a cruise ship at Amber Cove you need to leave the port. This can be confusing since you’re not quite sure where the port ends. This will require you to go all the way through the guarded gates and out to the main road. From there you have to turn left and walk several hundred yards until you get to them. I don’t believe they’re allowed to get any closer to the port than that. * They will provide helmets and goggles. We kept our sunglasses on and put the goggles over them. It is a dusty adventure and you’ll want to wear the goggles. * If you had a neck gator you should bring it. Otherwise they sell bandannas at two for five dollars. It was worth it to keep the dust out of your nose and mouth. One person in our party simply brought their disposable N95 mask and that appeared to work as well. * There were several stops that included some beautiful beaches. At one of the stops we were allowed to try some flavored cigars, local coffee, and hot chocolate. There were also a few small gift shops that sold various trinkets. They were cute and entertaining. You will want to bring some cash if that might interest you. * On average they do not travel very fast so everyone in the party felt comfortable and safe. * The ATVs appeared modern and were in good condition. * The terrain was bumpy but not terrible. Most of our ride was on unpaved roads that you would see occasional vehicles driving on as well. We passed numerous homes and ranches. We really enjoyed this tour. However, if you had back or neck issues then I would skip this tour. I hope this helps.
John M — Google review
Marysol Tours were amazing, highly recommend booking with them. There was a last minute change to our port and Francisco couldn’t have been more accommodating and helpful. We did the Buggy tour through the jungle and beach, so beautiful. Our guide “Caliente” had so much knowledge of the area and was amazing. If ever in the DR, don’t have any hesitations booking with Marysol Tours.

I have come to DR about 4 times and every time I come Marysol Tours always delivers great communication, great customer service, and great family fun. When at the cruise port, they are punctual and very friendly. While on the bus the tour guide is hilarious!!! Please bear in mind DR IS A 3rd world country! Obviously all of us from US/Canada live very differently. It always bothers me when people complain while on tours about their first world problems! It seems like most bad reviews are based on first world problems. Anyways, this year we have brought our 3 children and I can’t wait to post another review with pictures.
