The Saracens Head Inn

Inn
Bed & breakfast
The Saracens Head Inn is a charming B&B located by the river, offering comfortable rooms with picturesque water views. Guests can enjoy a delicious hot breakfast and locally sourced dining options. The inn provides an ideal base for exploring the natural beauty of Symonds Yat, including opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding along the River Wye.
Situated overlooking the river Rye with lovely views from the bar terrace. Access is via a single bridge and winding road, on which we encountered some deer on our journey back to the hotel on our first evening. We were warmly welcomed by all the staff, from reception, to bar and restaurant staff and cleaners. The (standard twin) room was compact but modern and simply decorated to high quality. Bathroom was nicely decorated with spacious shower and much appreciated fluffy towels. Everything was spotlessly clean. I mean really really clean! Good quality bedding and no noise from adjoining rooms helped make for a good nights sleep. Breakfast staff were great, prompt and friendly service. Breakfast was delicious; especially the bacon and poached eggs. Highly recommend the hotel and food. Many guests said they would definitely be returning.

I stayed here with my girlfriends for birthday celebrations and we had such a lovely time. We ate dinner on the Friday and Saturday in the restaurant and the food was delicious especially the burgers. Breakfast was delicious, I had scrambled egg and smoked salmon both days. The rooms were lovely. I think my only criticism was how hot my room was. We had to sleep with the patio doors open 😬 The staff were lovely and very accomodating. Perfect location 👌
Lynne S — Google review
Great location to spend a few days. Very busy in high season, but the staff was amazing and looked after us. Generous freshly cooked breakfast. Our room looked over the river. Noisy because of the many day-trip tourists but all quiet around 21.30 h. The river and its surroundings are beautiful. Many nice places to visit. Or just walk around the neighbourhood. It was our second time visiting Symonds Yat. We might go there again.
Wendi P — Google review
Just drove here for a pint. Location great BUT be warned you have to pay £5 to park for anything up to 4 hours, customers included!!! Husband went in to check that signage was right and say we just wanted one quick drink. He was told car park still had to be paid, even though it clearly wasn’t busy. It was a fair and narrow drive, out of our way, so think it’s worth warning others if you’re considering a pm pint. Now other side of river in Ye Old Ferry Inn, far more welcoming and lots of free parking, quite rightly, for customers - go there!
Zoe A — Google review
Excellent pub food. We called in after visiting Symonds Yat Rock, and were impressed with the quality of food and service. Only a small menu, but changes everyday, and had a few vegetarian options to choose from. The vegetarian mushroom burger was one of the best we'd ever tasted, and the chips were excellent.
Matthew W — Google review
We dropped in for dinner after a canoe trip down The Wye. The setting is beautiful and a great spot for a drink. However, £22 for a very average burger and chips is ridiculous. Being a bank holiday Sunday we didn't really have much of an option but to suck it up and pay the price. Had the prices been more reasonable we probably would have stuck around and had dessert and possibly a few more drinks. There was also a £5 charge for the car park, as you can only pay for the whole day, not necessarily the fault of the pub. In the end we ate and left, not feeling like we'd had good value for money.
James H — Google review
Not our first visit, such a great location right on the river. Had a lovely river walk and then stopped here for lunch just managing to grab the last outside table. Sadly the food wasn’t very good on this occasion although it came very quickly. I had the smashed burger but it was overcooked and also not very smashed. The Missus had the squid which was very greasy. Our friends had chicken and bacon sandwiches which looked a safer option. Will still come back if walking along the Wye just for the lovely ambience and views
Robert C — Google review
came in for dinner, we booked in advance (as we had our dog with us and that was advised on the website) and came in right around 6 when they started serving food at 6. food came really quick and was all really delicious, amazing quality and clearly super fresh. Also ordered some ice cream/pudding which, again, was lovely. A couple things to note: was quite expensive as pubs go, and not all the serving sizes were very generous. + there was a sign directing you to a bar to order food at, but we had a couple of confused waiters come to us and ask if we’d ordered, please pick one! order at table or at bar.

The Ostrich Inn

Mentioned on

Bar
British restaurant
The Ostrich Inn is a delightful and historic pub located in the picturesque village of Newland, surrounded by the stunning Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley. Dating back to the 13th century, this charming establishment has a rich history, having originally housed workers involved in building the nearby medieval church. Today, it prides itself on offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere, an impressive selection of real ales, and most notably, delicious food.
Ok so this place is a proper 5 star pub - we were in town locally for the night and this was ticking all the boxes. Went and was blown away by a quintessential British pub. Phoned ahead to book and got a fab table. Delicious food on offer and more importantly plenty of cask ale. Had a lovely conversation with people at the pub. Keen to come back
Peter F — Google review
A nice old boozer. Butty Bach was well kept, the garden was charming with rickety pub furniture on stepped levels up the slope. What I saw of the food didn't look unpleasant in any way but didn't ... give it a go. Dog friendly and easy going atmosphere.
James B — Google review
Found this amazing pub in a village called Newland just off the main road to Monmouth. The food, service and atmosphere were great. It was a Fish Friday so we had Whitebait, S&P Squid and Moules Frites and the staff were really nice. The garden out back is lush too but parking a bit limited in the village.
Darrin D — Google review
Brilliant food & perfect for dietary needs We loved this place so much we went back twice! The food quality genuinely impressed us - restaurant-standard dishes that far exceed typical pub fare. As dairy-free and gluten-free diners, we felt completely at ease. The chef's knowledge and willingness to accommodate was outstanding, and we never felt like a burden - crucial when you have food intolerances. The daily specials were exceptional, showing real thought and skill. My husband was thrilled to discover gluten-free IPA on tap - a rare find that shows they truly care about all customers. Make sure to book, especially on the weekend! Very popular and you can book online. Dog-friendly too, making this a winner all round. Highly recommended for quality food with genuine care for dietary needs.

Lovely pub, great food and great beer. If you like Moules Frites you’ll love the Moules Frites here!
Phil H — Google review
What a great little country pub the Ostrich is. Doesnt look much from the outside but highly recommended. The sunday roast we had was lovely, actually forgot to take photos this time 🙈. The service and bar staff were friendly and helpful. I would have given 5 stars, the lack of parking makes it awkward but it is in a small village with tight roads. Id say visit for food or a drink and help keep these locals going. The church across the road is also worth a visit and look inside, its beautiful.
Roger B — Google review
Great little pub with friendly staff, great food and I am a big fan of the wye valley brewery ‘HopFather’ 👍👍 We spent the weekend in Newland with friends and ate here twice. Really recommend to anyone travelling in the area. Good job Ostrich Inn.
Justin W — Google review
A lovely, genuine pub feel. A bustling bar, and tables with eaters by the open log fire. Lovely proper pub grub, large beer garden…..although up a flight of stairs for access. If I’m passing again, I’ll ll be in again for some food and drink.

Nestled in the picturesque Forest of Dean, The Woodman Inn is a delightful country pub that offers a warm and inviting atmosphere for both locals and visitors alike. With its rustic stone-walled rooms, it serves up hearty British meals and delectable desserts, making it an ideal spot to unwind after a day of exploring the stunning surroundings.
Food were well priced and pretty decent. The portion of mash for the pie 🥧 could've been a little more generous. Otherwise, couldn't really fault. The fish was out of this world! So fresh and crisp! Extremely dog friendly and they accommodated our needy boys amazingly!!

Popped in here for the wife's birthday. We had booked in advance but when we arrived they could find our booking, they where very apologetic and found us a table. Food was great the calamari was amazing. Glad we went. Overall a great experience, only let down by the booking mistake.

Stopped in on the off chance of a Sunday dinner. Great service, very welcoming. Food was amazing for a good price. Atmosphere was great, football on the TV but not to rowdy. Deffinalty visiting again.

Very nice Sunday lunch at a very reasonable price. Good service and helpful staff. I had the Farmyard choice which includes all the meat options, great to! Veg comes in a separate dish. Very busy at lunchtime so glad we booked. Would definitely recommend.

We are from Cardiff and staying near by, we happen to find this pub, glad we did. Greeted at the door, the food was amazing, especially the pizza, my partner really enjoyed it, he wanted more. Overall we had a lovely time with great food and great service. We would definitely come back if we lived closer.

Had a great experience at The Woodman! I ordered the Big Stuff Pizza and it was absolutely delicious – generous toppings, perfectly cooked, and full of flavour. Definitely one of the best pub pizzas I’ve had in a while. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the barman was lovely – friendly, attentive, and made the whole visit even better. Great service really makes a difference, and he nailed it. Highly recommend if you’re in the area and craving good pizza and a relaxed pub vibe!

After not booking soon enough at another local.. got booked in here instead, sadly the food was very 2nd par, if your happy with it fried burger and micro convenience meal this is your place…. Shame as the feel when you enter was very accommodating , nice staff but didn’t seem much care for quality from owner 😔

The Woodman Inn is a nice pub with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff are friendly and attentive, and there’s a good selection of drinks to choose from. The food was satisfactory - nothing fancy, but decent pub fare. A pleasant spot for a relaxed drink or meal.

This charming establishment features a delightful café, restaurant, and food hall where visitors can indulge in an array of delectable dishes made from their renowned produce. Fantastic dinner. Here is a great place for seafood lover. I love every dishes that we ordered - everything is fresh and delicious. My favourites are the lobster linguine, fish soup and stem ginger souffle. Service can be more attentive and furniture probably needs some upgrades. All in all a fantastic dinner and we will definitely come back again.

Unrivalled dining experience! Every aspect of the evening was perfect, from the initial welcome to the final farewell, the staff know how to make your evening a delight, a sensible amount of humour with a respectful level of service, not invasive or oppressive, just brilliant. The food was just as I might have hoped for and it did not disappoint, it was so good we found ourselves sharing tastes, not something we would normally do. I can honestly say I am excited about the prospect of my next visit...which can't come soon enough. Thank you to every member of staff who make this customer experience so perfect.

This place is absolutely excellent. 5 stars in all areas! The mussels were some of the best I have ever had, incredible sauce and fantastic bread! For dessert I had a scoop of chocolate ice cream and a scoop of pistachio and saffron which was a very interesting flavour but actually really worked. Considering the outstanding quality of food served here the price is incredibly reasonable. No more expensive then pub grub yet a million times better!

The setting had a wow factor as soon as we arrived. We were greeted initially by truly outstanding friendly staff, and made to feel extremely welcome. The food was just exquisite throughout all our courses. What a jewel in the culinary crown.

Fantastic delicatessen rand unbelievable fishmongers Many home smoked and local produce avail. Great coffee house and cafe downstairs with a dedicated restaurant upstairs. Well, well worth a visit. Excellent 👌
James S — Google review
We had dinner at the Barn in May, 4 adults, two pescatarian. It seems hard to find many good fish restaurant in Gloucestershire but this is definitely one. We had a couple of nibbles, crispy Salmon skins & padron peppers, parfait small plate, fish & chips, seafood platter, smoked platter & the artichoke plate. Everyone devoured everything, portion size was good & drinks prices reasonable. They saved the best until last with the desserts, Strawberry & vanilla tart, lemon meringue éclair & raspberry marquis. Not the cheapest with a total bill of around £180, only one drink each and one was drinking water anyway, but still felt like value for money. Location is a modern Barn conversion, as the name suggests, tastefully interior in stone. Agood evening all around.

Had the most beautiful meal! The staff were lovely they even made special treats for our anniversary, will definitely be back

We had a delicious meal for four of us. It was a real treat, and our choice of the hot fish platter was perfect. Although we could’ve done with more paper towels and finger washing bowls as it was so finger licking good! All the puddings were melt in the mouth perfect too. The staff were attentive and fun and created a great atmosphere. The restaurant was packed, and yet it seemed calm and well managed. Obviously the place to come for a posh lunch out that doesn’t break the bank. Lovely little trip to the shop and deli and fish counter downstairs too on our way out. Thankyou.

The Miners Arms is a dog-friendly pub located near the Whitecroft Station of the Dean Forest Railway. It offers reasonably priced pub classics made with locally sourced ingredients and provides a 10% discount for railway ticket holders. The food is delicious, especially the lamb shanks, and the staff are known for being super friendly. With an impressive beer garden and a rustic pub grub menu, it's an ideal stop for tourists exploring the Forest of Dean.
Lovely local pub. Tasty filling food with staff that were cheerful and they couldn’t do more to help you, even taking the initiative to help before you ask without making you feel rushed or pushed. They allow dogs in the bar and have a lovely outside area with play equipment for kids. Bathrooms were clean and functional. We were so pleased to find this place for our Sunday dinner and would happily return.
Mrs M — Google review
We have come to this pub with a group of friends with teenagers. Chose to sit outside, it was a pleasant evening and we decided to have a dinner sitting outside. Good selection of drinks, food was really good. Ordered a variety from Sunday lunch menu and everyone liked their dishes. Good service, although my order didn't get through somehow but as an apology was offered a free drink, didn't need but appreciated the gesture. Please not that it is gastropub but service charge was not included and i didn't notice it and didn't leave a tip. My sincere apologies for that.

Staying nearby, we walked to the miners arms to be greeted with a lovely modern and attractive decor. Miner's Arms is dog friendly and has a dining area that allows our canine companions. The staff were friendly, professional and accommodating, the food was delicious, catering for vegetarian and meat eaters alike. Would definitely recommend and return again if we visit this location again. The service, food and experience were very much value for money. Would highly recommend

We had such a great experience here! The food was absolutely delicious, every dish was full of flavour and really well cooked. On top of that, our server was so lovely and kind, which made the whole visit even more enjoyable. A wonderful pub with fantastic food and genuinely warm service, can’t wait to come back!
Emma — Google review
We spent 4 days as a group of 9 in the Forest of Dean in August ’25 and decided to visit the Miners one evening. The staff were very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Even continually moving tables in the conservatory to accommodate us all! The food was outstanding and reasonably priced too. There is a play area outside which the children thoroughly enjoyed. If we ever visited the area again we’d definitely return. 10/10.
Looknospaces — Google review

What a lovely pub! Very dog friendly, staff member who served us was an absolute delight. Didn't catch his name but he was a great server and lush with our collie dog, bringing treats over and making a fuss. Very dog friendly. Suitable for those with dietary requirements. Had vegan starters, mains and deserts that were actually so delicious! Wide selection of dishes too, I wish I was local because I'd be here all the time. There's parking and a park for kids to play in. Would definitely recommend!

The Whitebrook

Mentioned on

Fine dining restaurant
Bed & breakfast
Nestled in the enchanting Wye Valley, The Whitebrook is a luxurious retreat that beautifully marries contemporary style with rustic charm. This upscale lodging features elegantly designed rooms offering stunning views of either the lush gardens or the picturesque valley. Guests can indulge in exquisite fine dining experiences, crafted by renowned chef Chris Harrod, who brings his expertise from prestigious kitchens to create memorable culinary delights. After enjoying a sumptuous meal, unwind in one of the plush sleigh beds that promise restful nights.
We had lunch here on Thursday. I am in a powered wheelchair, the last time we ate there, I was able to get in easily, but this time, there was some work being done on the back terrace, but the waiter went and got a ramp and made a lot of effort to get me into the restaurant. The food was outstanding, we asked the sommelier to choose wines to go with the dishes and they were all excellent. We pushed the boat out a bit, so the bill was large, but you get what you pay for, and they have, quite rightly a Michelin star. No complaints from us.
Hugh S — Google review
Went for Sunday lunch, beautiful valley location. Arrived for 1230 we didn't leave until 1700. Beautiful and considered dishes, amazing suckling pig, should have tried the dandelion expresso martini...next time. The wine pairing complemented every dish, intensifying the flavours, dandelion root ice-cream. Well worth taking the time to discover the beautiful valley, and plan on enough time to enjoy the food and hospitality.
J C — Google review
Wife and I went in there just for food. It was incredible. You do need a bit of time, it’s a 9 course meal but they do give you a few extras here and there so it becomes a lengthy one. Just ignore your phone and enjoy the food really :) it’s amazing and the staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. The photo I’m adding is of my favourite dish of the night.
Ricardo C — Google review
This is a copy of an e-mail I have sent to the owners of the Whitebrook twice and received no reply. I wanted to feed back on the experience we had at the Whitebrook yesterday evening (August 2nd). We had booked the 9-course tasting menu as a treat for our anniversary and were looking forward to a wonderful evening out. I would also like to preface this with the fact we are no strangers to fine dining and have eaten out in many exceptional restaurants both at home and abroad. We arrived at the restaurant promptly at three minutes to seven for our reservation at seven and were ushered somewhat hurriedly through to the restaurant area and seated. While we were offered water straight-away, it was twenty minutes before we even had sight of a wine list, for which we had to ask the waiter. We were served a selection of courses, all intricately detailed, with a huge amount of effort and lots of different flavours involved. It was clear there was real expertise in the kitchen, although we felt that perhaps the complexity was sometimes to the detriment of the real star ingredients, which should maybe have been allowed to shine more. The service was polite and effective throughout. The major issue we had was the pace at which the courses came out. I am well aware that fine dining is not fast food, and these intricate dishes take time to prepare, but a tiny plateful of food every half an hour to forty minutes makes for a very long evening. It was well over three hours before we got to the ‘main’ course, the hogget, and by this stage we simply did not have the energy for the remaining two courses. We informed the sommelier accordingly and asked that we be brought the bill and not charged for the remaining two courses. We were told that the Whitebrook does not like to rush the experience, and we should have been aware that it could take up to three and a half hours to get through the courses. We were already three and a half hours in with two more courses to go. The time shown on our bill is 22:41. The younger male member of staff then came to our table, admitted they were a chef down for the evening and accused us of arriving late. He said it was made clear that they liked diners to arrive half an hour beforehand for a drink in the bar (we have checked through all our correspondence and have scoured your website, including going through a full new booking process (but not completing it) and no mention is made of this). He added that the fact that we did not do this supposedly threw all their timings off, so our service did not in fact start until 1940. I have certainly not come across a restaurant that insists on customers arriving half an hour in advance of their reservation time. He tried to turn the blame for the slow food on us in spite of the fact that the sommelier had already admitted it had taken too long and agreed with us (in front of him) that we had indeed arrived before 19:00. We find that conduct utterly unacceptable. We did not withhold the service charge as that would have been unfair on the other staff members, i.e. the waitress and the sommelier. We were charged full price for the tasting menu and one bottle of wine but not charged for one extra glass of wine each or our water. I do not believe is it is fair that we were falsely accused of arriving late. Promptness is something that is very dear to our hearts and I’m sure you have CCTV footage that proves we were exactly on time for our booking. Had the staff merely apologised for the slow delivery of food due to the fact they only had two chefs, we would have thought nothing more of it. As it is, the attitude of your staff left us with a very sour taste in our mouths.
Mary W — Google review
We came for an overnight stay using a voucher that had been bought for us. The servers were lovely, and the food was spectacular- 'everything but the squeal' in particular was a standout dish. I have to comment on the incredibly slow service though, as this really did affect our enjoyment of the evening. The first half of the service was OK, with dishes coming out every 15-25 minutes, but things in the kitchen seemed to slow right down for the second half. It ended up with a 40 minute wait between courses, so for a 7:30pm table we only left at 12:30 which was far too late. This is not a normal length of time even for a 9/10 course tasting menu. It was a shame, as it meant the second half became a real slog to wait it out. We wanted to try the cheese course so decided to give that a go seeing as it was already late- it was nice, but only a couple of the cheeses were interesting enough for me to be worth it. By the time the petit fours came out (which were lovely), we would have much rather just headed up to bed. Breakfast the next morning was nice, and thankfully a lot speedier service. We overall enjoyed our time here, but wouldn't recommend the tasting menu unless you come prepared for the long waits!
Jenny — Google review
One can travel to the great pyramids of Giza in less time than it takes to have lunch at the Whitebrook. Vast quantities of time shall pass between each of the pleasantly tasting, but minutely portioned courses (about 40 minutes each, for 2-3 mouthfuls). The food was delicate and seasonal, and staff were friendly. If you are lucky enough to have the wine pairing the sommelier will attentively describe each delicious offering to accompany each course; if you are driving you will not be offered any drinks over the 5 hour meal. I left thirsty and slightly bored, and regret not bringing a book.
Paul W — Google review
We happened upon The Whitebrook and Chef Chris graciously made room for 2 more for the 9 course Tasting Menu. What a wonderful experience. Manuel and the other staff were so very helpful and the meals were a wonder. Highly recommend!
Michael S — Google review
Lovely, the food is light, fulfilling and dellicately delicious. The tasting menu with wine pairing left me feeling replenished and energised rather than stuffed full. The staff are informative, attentive, and lovely and made our stay very enjoyable . The Whitebrook feels like a doorway to the wild lands that surround and nourish it. Wonderful.

Situated next to a golf course, it provides easy access to the Forest of Dean and Sculpture Trail. The hotel offers amenities such as bicycle rentals, complimentary wireless internet, and a garden with a picnic area. Guests can dine at The Orangery restaurant or enjoy 24-hour room service.
Just got back from short break at Speech House Hotel with our two dogs. We were in a cottage room which consisted of bedroom, bathroom and living room. Spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The orangery where we could eat with the dogs is a lovely room, service excellent food very good. The overall service is superb. The location really good. The dogs favourite part the 15 acre field attached to the hotel. Really well kept the dogs and us loved walking there a few times a day! Would highly recommend this hotel and we are looking forward to a return visit.

Very nice venue, definitely deserves its grade 2 listed status. Only went for food which was very good, staff all friendly except one who was a bit moody. Only knocking off one star because they don't have any local ciders either on tap or in bottle, rather, cheap nasty mass produced stuff, yet they have a local producer only a few miles away.
Tom W — Google review
We did not stay at the hotel but enjoyed a dinner at The Speech House. We were a party of four, sat in the orangery, and the food was hit and miss: The ingredients were fantastic but found that the batter of the whitebait and fish and chips to be too much and too oily. One of our steaks was also well done when we asked for it medium rare. The hunter's chicken and sticky toffee pudding were standouts - delicious! The beer selection was not very good and the service was also strange. It's not one server per table so we had three different servers approaching us with the same questions throughout our meal. The garden area is beautiful and spacious, they even had a little cabin of toys for our son to play in. The restaurant area is charming and would like to eat there next time.

The Speech house hotel is in the ideal position for anyone visiting the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. I has stayed here several times and will do again. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The accommodation is good and the food is wonderful.

Lovely beautiful hotel. Rooms lovely and clean, But if you use a wheel chair or mobility scooter its not for you, if you need to go in the garden. You've to go out side all the way around the car park just to get in to the garden. Not very disabled friendly..can't fault the staff, they were great

The best place to stay west of London. Amazing location. Wonderful food, service and local friendliness. Can't wait to go back again for a long weekend. Walking, mountain bike riding and then brilliant relaxing in the garden.

There is nothing else to say, except we loved it here.. My Mum and I visited recently, having booked into another property - we quickly left as it was not what I had thought. Having done a quick search, I booked a room at The Speech House. Within minutes, I received a call from Tracey to advise they had a function on that evening. What service, brilliant. On arrival Tracey advised there was another room and was happy to let me have a peek - quite a few stairs but I decided Mum would be fine with the stairs and the setting and service already received was perfect. The location, amazing, amazing, amazing. Loved it. In the middle of the forest, perfect if you are looking for somewhere to explore. Having decided to have a light bite for dinner, Jayne came to take our order. And Jayne was the most attentive, without being overpowering - funny - brilliant person we could have met. A great addition to the team. Our room was just delightful. Beautiful. And breakfast, the produce was such good quality and the setting again was wonderful. You can tell a lot about the quality of the sausage and bacon, I know crazy but you can. I had to have more, even though it was not needed. Would I recommend, well as you can tell yes. Would I visit again, absolutely. Thank you to the team for making our visit so memorable. xx

Really great food - a cut above your standard pub grub. A friend and I met up there and had a really nice meal. The service was great, the staff very friendly and helpful. The food was reasonably priced. I live locally and I'll definitely bring the family here, they'll love it. The bar also seemed nice, it had a good atmosphere and is clearly a popular choice in the area.

All 3 courses delicious!! The Whitebait was light and crispy, the roast was wonderful and the sticky toffee pudding was one of the best I’ve had. No pictures as I scoffed it down too quickly. The bar area and garden are dog friendly and they even have a little dog menu!

The Belfry Hotel is a modest establishment located on the outskirts of the forest of dean. It offers basic accommodations, along with a pub/restaurant and a children's play area. Guests can enjoy complimentary breakfast during their stay. While the hotel's affordability is commendable, some guests have reported subpar service. The restaurant, which caters to the entire town of Little Dean, experienced significant delays in taking orders on a busy Saturday night in late May.
Really friendly family run hotel. Rooms were clean and comfortable. One little observation, could have done with a mirror in the main room and a few more plugs. Food was superb. Large portions and very reasonably priced. Always piping hot. Great for exploring the Forest of Dean and easy access into South Wales.

Called here on a Sunday late afternoon with the purpose of watching the football on Sky Sports. We wanted to eat, but we were informed that Sunday lunch stopped serving at 15:45 (missed by 10 minutes) and there was no evening menu. The lady behind the bar checked with the kitchen to find they could do a lunch for us, but we declined as it was too early for us. She also had the TV switched over to the football, as the there was no seats in front of the TVs showing the game. Unfortunately no real ale. Very popular with the locals.

😁 • Spotlessly clean room • really comfortable bed • lots of cupboard space • gorgeous shower room • Very friendly staff • well priced and tasty food • lots of parking • nice front paved garden • lovely children's playground with garden benches • lovely air conditioned pub with lots of seating • tasty full English breakfast 😔 • no plug in bathroom sink • no shelf for toiletries in shower • only soap provided ( would have preferred shower/body/hair wash) • only two t- bags a day. • only one loo roll for two days Wonderful stay, will definitely stay again!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5!

Pub was on a busy road located on a corner. Unknown about rooms as I didn't stay. A good varied menu and a good choice of drinks. Friendly staff and pub customers.
Caroline F — Google review
Currently staying for 2 nights with my husband, the staff are lovely & the room is very clean. The reason I gave 3 stars is because of the noise, I don't know if it's people staying in the other rooms that are outside or if it's people from the pub but they are constantly chanting & shouting really loudly. Not what you want when you come for a quiet weekend away, I don't know if anyone's staying here with young children but there's no way they'll be getting them to sleep.
Lisa H — Google review
Should have been warned off by the notice at the entrance demanding patrons wear shirts at all times. The welcome continued in the same vein; bar staff telling us brusquely to remove our dog before even greeting us or taking our drinks order (sorry yes should have spotted the sign). We were thinking about getting a meal but decided to move on. Won't be back.

Indian takeaway
Indian restaurant
During a visit to the Forest of Dean, we stumbled upon Akash Indian Cuisine, a delightful takeaway. We indulged in four delectable curries that satisfied our entire family. The owner was incredibly amiable when we went to collect our order. The Peshwari naan stood out as particularly delicious and is highly recommended. The service at Akash was swift and efficient, with a very pleasant waiter taking care of us.
For my 50th they managed to fit my entire party of 13 in at 5 mins notice when the other curry house in Cinderford forgot about our booking. The food was marvellous, service very polite and attentive. Not the best decour but the food more than makes up for it. Defiantly the best curry in Cinderford hands down. Price was very reasonable. Only place I get a curry from in Cinderford.

we used to always order from.akash, but the last couple of visits something has changed...and not forgetting.the better. the food used to be full.of flavour and enjoyable. the last few times the food has tasted bland...not much flavour or richness to it like I experience with other Indian restaurants. yes I had korma, but it was watery and no flavour. we had garlic keema nan which lacked meat or garlic and tasted bland, no spice or flavour to the keema/minced lamb or colour. all.the restaurants i have used in the past the minced lamb has a lovely flavour and a rich red colour to it, their time it was a light brown colour and no flavour, the peshawar nan also had no sweetness or flavour to it again not a nice nan bread. furthermore the keema rice again, bland... im not sure what has happened as over the years this was our goto curry house but wow have they gone down hill, a total waste of £37. I will not return and will.go back to rossas there is an amazin Indian takeaway over there where the food tastes quality or even one the one further up the road from akash.. what a shame. it maybe new chefs or owners but something has definitely changed sort it out guys..

I ordered a takeaway. It's the first time I've used this restaurant. The man was very friendly on the phone. The food was ready at the time he asked me to pick up. The food was excellent. The Chicken Saag was one of the best I have tssted. Only criticism, the chicken Tikka Masala was delicious but very little chicken in there ... mostly sauce. Also it felt very void in the restaurant so not sure I would eat in. However, all in all I would definitely recommend

Bristol Airport

International airport
Airport
Bristol Airport is a regional airport in South-West England, offering international flights and featuring a modern, 2-floor terminal. The city of Bristol has a rich history as a major port and is known for its cultural vibrancy, historic landmarks, and aquatic heritage. It has evolved into a hub for architectural, creative, historical, and cultural activities with independent music venues and theaters hosting various events and festivals throughout the year.
We used Bristol Airport for a quick trip and were pleasantly surprised by the changes taking place. it’s clear the airport is undergoing a major redevelopment and from what we saw, what’s already been done looks great, and what’s to come seems very promising. Silver car parking was excellent, check in smooth plane took of on time.
Hug D — Google review
Bristol Airport Bristol Airport is not a large airport, and it still provides facilities that meet most travellers’ needs. Toilets are free of charge. In the departure hall, you’ll find restaurants, convenience stores, gift shops, and duty-free shopping. The bus station outside offers easy connections to and from the airport, and clear signage inside makes it simple to navigate.
Muh F — Google review
Bristol International Airport offers a practical and efficient gateway for travellers in the South West. While not as expansive as major UK hubs, it delivers a streamlined experience with relatively quick check-ins, friendly staff, and a manageable layout. The airport serves a wide range of short- and mid-haul destinations across Europe, making it a convenient choice for both leisure and business travellers. Food and retail options are modest but adequate, and the Aspire Lounge provides a quieter space for those seeking comfort. Transport access is generally good, though the lack of a direct train line is a drawback. Parking is well-organised, with shuttle services from long-stay zones running frequently. In summary, Bristol Airport strikes a balance between simplicity and functionality. It may not offer luxury, but it delivers reliability and ease which is exactly what most regional travellers need.
Oghenehero B — Google review
Getting busier and busier with lots of flights to many home and European locations, this airport looks tired and is currently undergoing refurbishment and investment which promises to improve the experience. The check in and arrival areas are all close together with minimal seating, I found no phone charging locations and just one cafe downstairs. There is a M&S food as you enter the terminal, and plenty of space outside however short stay parking is expensive and limited. The long stay car park is serviced by a bus and is very convenient but also not cheap. I arrived by bus at the extensive bus terminal using the Stagecoach Falcon service that runs between Plymouth and Bristol City center.
Glen A — Google review
Very bustling regional airport that is undergoing some much-needed upgrades and expansion construction. At some points it was very crowded and challenging to navigate through. The rental car pick up area was easy to find and the bus transport to their was quick and easy.
Mary B — Google review
It's never a quiet spot to watch such amazing engineering at its finest. There is always hustle and bustle on the tarmac and taxiway with aeroplanes landing and taking off with surprise visits, including light aircraft and even a helicopter. If you're into watching planes, and you're going to be there a while, bring food and a drink as there is nothing around to buy. Parking next to the runway has about 20 spaces but if you park at the bottom of the runway, 2 spaces.
Tom R — Google review
Well... not the best experience... the lounge were fully booked and no possibility to use the paid services. Long distance warking frombthe plane to exit and the same during departure. The free chairs available around. Entering UK with kids under 10years you have to pass a person control
Victoria P — Google review
The spot itself is not the easiest to get to until you are close to the airfield. Great area for a good couple of hours plane spotting, you will see a lot of EasyJet flights, as it's one of their main hubs.

Birmingham Airport

International airport
Airport
Birmingham Airport, established in the 1980s, boasts strong local and long-distance bus connections as well as its own train station. It is conveniently located in the heart of Birmingham. The area offers a variety of family-friendly activities including children's clubs, play areas, museums, nature spots, and entertainment venues. Additionally, there are numerous dining options such as Dirty Martini which provides a cozy atmosphere and serves food along with an extensive selection of liquors.
Hello pretty much, I had a great experience taking my flight from Birmingham airport to Perpignan yesterday ! I arrived at the airport around 11:30am and my flight was at 1:40pm. I never came to this airport before but I didn’t struggle at all to find where I had to go for the departures place. The security was easy to find and everyone was pretty kind with me there, explaining everything and helping me whenever I needed. After security, waiting for my plane I had access to a huge commercial place. We can buy a lot of different things you can see on the photos and we can eat pretty much everything. Such a good idea ! I had to wait 1 hour and a half but it was so quick with all of these things to wait. Thank you Birmingham and United Kingdom for this beautiful Airport ✈️🛩️

Great place. Perfectly located airport. 15 minutes and I am there. No traffic. Great parking. Great short term pick up/drop off zone. After renovation - looks amazing. Very good security check system. Even when it looks that it is a looooooot of people you go smoothly. Perfect for travellers who are annoyed with queues. After renovation I have never bought fast track in this airport
Diana — Google review
This was a great airport to fly out from, connected with the train station by a people mover cable car type system! Electronic departure boards and boarding gate signage is frequent to help navigate around, water refillable points can be found across the airport too. Seating is comfy for sitting back on or some for lying down, toilets are kept clean themselves. Designs like the pattern on the wall showing a steam train running to the end are innovative and queuing system for the flight was efficient where we walked straight there, security went fine although we were told not to take pictures in the baggage area maybe due to the possibility of any breaches.

I recently traveled through Birmingham Airport from Abu Dhabi via Istanbul. As a tourist and other nationality they asked some questions about travel purposes, return dates, stay locations and it was easy for me. Too slow and rush at emigration, baggage handling was fast, trolly required to pay, public transportation are available. The ticket rate was high if compared with Heathrow.
Abdulsalam P — Google review
Birmingham Airport prioritizes function over flair. The facilities are small and dated, with minimal shopping and dining options. It serves its primary purpose-getting you on your flight-but don't expect anything more.
Joti C — Google review
Very low quality, one of the worst in the UK. Very slow services. After 23:30, no information desk. After 24:00 no transportation to the train station until the morning. My flight was delayed so I missed the train and I spent all night at the airport. No place to sit apart from the floor. Toilets filthy. No signs to find access to the coach.
James D — Google review
I knew Birmingham airport wouldn't be the best, but today i had the absolute worst experience. The hall for the bag drop Was never show, it said zone the entire time, a letter was never given. Staff couldn't help me either, I was told to just wait. After touring all zones for the 3rd time one display had changed to the airline I needed. Already running late bc of the earlier matter I made mh way to security. The airport website clearly stated liquids up to 2l would be fine. Still my bag had to be inspected further. Turns out liquids up to 2l are alright but need to be tested individually. Would be good to communicate that in advance to plan in the time. The toilets are run down. The doors barely close, so someone walked in on me. Furthermore a hook would be nice so handbags dont have to be left on the floor. Overall I would avoid Birmingham Airport whenever I can.
Jogo — Google review
I recently flew through Birmingham Airport (BHX) in the UK and had a mixed experience. On one hand, it’s conveniently located and user‑friendly in certain aspects, but on the other hand there were a few issues worth noting. What I liked: The airport is relatively easy to navigate with a single terminal layout, which made finding check‑in, security and my gate more straightforward than at some larger UK hubs. Its rail‑link is strong according to recent independent surveys, making it a good option for travelers using public transport. International Airport Review During my visit, staff at check‑in were courteous and helpful when I asked about luggage allowance and boarding gate details. What could be better: Security and check‑in queues were longer than I expected. Several reviewers have flagged this as a repeated issue, particularly during busy times or while ongoing construction is in progress. Some facilities feel outdated or under‑resourced — for example, seating near gates was limited and a few retail/café areas felt crowded or lacking. Drop‑off and pick‑up zones, as well as car‑park signage and access, seemed confusing at times; this added a bit of stress when arriving early. Overall thoughts: If you’re flying from or through Birmingham Airport and arrive with plenty of time, the trip can be quite smooth. The accessibility and straightforward terminal design are definite pluses. However, if you’re cutting it close to your flight or travelling at peak times, I’d advise giving yourself extra buffer time due to potential queues and minor facility drawbacks.

Cardiff Airport

International airport
Airport
Cardiff Airport is a small but efficient airport located just minutes from the lively Welsh capital. Despite its size, it offers essential amenities such as Greggs, Costa Coffee, WHSmiths, a pub, and duty-free shopping. The airport provides a calm and quiet atmosphere with minimal queues at security and plenty of seating for travelers to relax before their flights. While it may not have the flashy stores of larger airports, Cardiff Airport offers everything needed for a pleasant travel experience.
Phenomenal. We stood at the end of the runway where we watched the planes coming into land. The noise from the Boeing 747 was incredible and absolutely amazing. There were a variety of smaller crafts passing overhead. Absolutely brilliant.
Julie B — Google review
Extremely disappointment decision by the airport authorities with the £3 drop off few for 10minutes. Very disappointing amount too as it could be £1 instead : it’s already so difficulty to her to the airport from the city centre, as public transport unfriendly unless you fancy travelling on a bus for 90mins from the city or a train followed by a bus which again takes an hour! Car is the only option! Very empty check in area- only Logan air counters open. Upstairs to departures- much better now, More organised and smoother security without waits as previously with more security aisles. Duty free still the same size albeit missing champagne deals. Three options for seated food and drink: tap and brew, y Castell and Costa Coffee. WH Smith around the corner. The lounge only accepts dragonpass and not priority pass.
Travelling D — Google review
The airport was fine, but the parking was very confusing. It doesn't distinguish between long stay & short stay. Thus when taking folks to departures or picking them up at arrivals, you have no idea which car park to go to!
Jonathan G — Google review
Real mixed bag. Plenty of parking a short walk to the terminal. Quick bag drop and quick through security. Choices for food when through are limited and the sole bar needs a very thorough clean. 1 duty free shop and one W h Smith is all that's there to browse. A pub and a costa, both double the normal costs are the only food options.

Flying from Cardiff to Malaga today and the whole experience has been fantastic, other airports could learn a lot from Cardiff. From parking to security to duty free, the staff are welcoming and their customer service is second to none. Special mention to Robert Lewis in security who was exceptionally helpful, a credit to Cardiff Airport, who clearly loves his work. Thank you Cardiff Airport for making the beginning of our holiday a stress free experience. Love flying from Cardiff! Diolch my fawr 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Toured Wales and ended my time in Cardiff. At Cardiff Airport, very easy rental car drop off. Very easy check-in, bag drop off and getting through security. Also visited the business lounge. From my very first interaction to getting on the plane, every single person was friendly and efficient. I have spent time in the busiest airports in the world, and Cardiff Airport was a breath of fresh air for me. I will make a point of trying to fly in or out of Cardiff in the future. Thanks! .

I kindly request consideration for expanding international flight routes at Cardiff Airport. Increasing global connectivity will not only benefit travelers but also significantly boost the local economy—supporting taxi businesses, creating jobs, and driving more visitors into our vibrant city. Thank you for your attention to this opportunity for regional growth.
