Castello Aragonese

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Fortress
Located on the island of Borgo Antico, at the entrance to the bay surrounding Taranto, Castello Aragonese is one of Italy's oldest and most grandiose sights. Built between 1487 and 1492 by Ferdinand II of Aragon, it replaced an earlier Norman structure. The castle offers guided tours by the Italian Navy and features two cafes and a bookshop.
The entrance is free, it is at fixed times, it is a navy museum and the tour is guided by a navy guide. I recommend that you make a reservation so that you don't have emotions, we didn't know and we didn't, but we were still allowed access, I think it's related to the number of visitors at that time. The guide's explanations are interesting and complete, in Italian anyway, but you can still take pictures of the castle, the interior models, the surroundings and enjoy the sunset if you are at the right time.
Adriana H — Google review
The castle are still a functional and working marine barracs, so you have to take the free tour. Otherwise no entry. It didn't work with our schedule
Nikola T — Google review
Astonishing scenes of old and new. The Ponte Girevole (swing bridge ) opens for ships and connects too seas. Castello has free tours but in Italian only
Karine K — Google review
Entry is only by the free guided tour at set times during the day and evening. It is still an Italian Navy facility therefore the restrictions. It is still is worth viewing from the outside. We couldn’t wait 2 hours for the next tour so we had to skip it. Definitely would do it next time.
Simon R — Google review
A very nice visit at the castle. A navy official provides a guided tour for free (in Italian) every hour. The tour gives information over the history of Taranto and the castle. I found it very informative and entertaining. I would recommend doing it if you are visiting Taranto. Also I was amazed that by the sunset, they displayed the Italian flag with lights on one of the sides of the Costello while playing some anthem (I wish I knew what was it), I loved that moment.
Babysooz — Google review
A beautiful castle belongs to the Italian navy, but an unpleasant surprise awaited us, you must have booked a tour guide, that's the only way you can enter...!!! It doesn't even matter so it's worth a visit. Highly recommended.
Παναγιωτης Κ — Google review
Very interesting history and friendly staff! Visit with the group is free and scheduled.
Nino K — Google review
We wanted to visit the castle, but the experience at the reception was rather unpleasant. The information provided was very insufficient. We asked for a tour in English, but it was not available, and they also refused to let us join the Italian-language group.

Archaeological Museum of Tarento

History Museums
The National Archaeological Museum of Taranto, also known as Marta, is a treasure trove that chronicles the rich history of Taranto through an impressive collection of artifacts. Established in 1887, it stands as Apulia's first territorial museum and has evolved significantly over the years. Visitors can explore items ranging from Paleolithic carvings to vessels from the early Middle Ages.
Magnificent museum with a wealth of findings from local excavations (particularly from the Greek necropolis of Taras) as well as a very informative exposition about the early mycenian and greek settlements in the area, the Roman annexation of Taras, reaching up to the medieval era. The findings are presented in two floors. One should follow the map provided by the friendly employees at the entrance to see the exposition in chronological order. The absolute highlights here are the extensive and very well-preserved pottery collection, the tomb of the pentathlon athlete, as well as the intricate handcrafted jewelry that has been unearthed. Other interesting findings include some Roman era mosaics and written laws, as well as large coin hoards from various eras. Additionally, the museum currently holds a temporary exhibition about Penelope and the Odyssey in a broader historical and art context. About the museum itself, it is wheelchair accessible and the ticket for one adult costs 10 Euros (in my opinion, well worth the price). Descriptions are available in Italian and English, and there is the option of an audio tour. There are clean bathrooms on every floor. For a complete visit of all exhibits, estimate 2-3 hours in total. All in all, a must-see in Taranto for history and archeology enthusiasts as well as for anyone seeking to understand the many-layered history of this ancient city! Grazie mille!
George M — Google review
This museum and Museo Sigismondo Castromediano in Lecce will give you excellent overview of the history of this region. It is impressive what artefacts they have from Ancient Greek and Roman times. The collection comes mostly from necropolis. Definitively worth a visit, we were in November and we were the only people here while visiting the museum … If you buy ticket for MUDI you will get discount for this museum and vice versa. Kudos to friendly stuff.
Dorota K — Google review
What a gem! Such a beautiful collection. The highlights for us included the collection of Medusa faces and the incredible array of jewelry. A couple of lovely temporary exhibitions rounded it out. Worth the visit and a good audio guide as well.
Kim L — Google review
This is one of the most surprising and jaw dropping museums I have ever visited. I would very rarely suggest driving hours out of your way for a museum but if you are a fan of Greco-Romano culture this gas artefacts that are just outstanding. The audio guide gives you a pretty good background but I could have spent hours and hours here - instead we only spent 2.5 hours in this museum as it was just so overwhelming. The athletes section is amazing, especially if you have an interest in pan-Atheneum games.
Avril J — Google review
Pretty good for the history before BC, but minimal history after that! I really enjoyed the videos and want more of them to give 5 stars. I went on a Sunday and it wasn’t crowded. But don’t use the elevator/lifts is you have a fear of small, packed , and hot stuffy spaces.
Patrick C — Google review
We spent a couple of hours here and it was worth every penny - a really epic display of history with so many items and so much detail! The huge mosaics were a highlight. Even though it wasn't applicable to us we also appreciated the accessibility with several sensory exhibits for people without vision, and ramps and lifts.
Wen T — Google review
Incredible museum in Taranto - boot of Italy, that traces it's history from 800 BC through the Grecco Roman Period. Wonderfully displayed artifacts which guide you through it's long history. Unfortunately, it is really the only site worth visiting. A pretty old city, but nothing remarkable. But if you find yourself in Taranto, it's well worth your time!

Really interesting museum with lots of archeological artefacts. The descriptions were all in Italian and English. We really enjoyed it.

Jonian Dolphin Conservation

Research foundation
Nature & Parks
Nature & Wildlife Areas
Jonian Dolphin Conservation is a renowned marine research team that operates in the waters around Puglia, focusing on observing and safeguarding the dolphins of the Ionian Sea. Participants can join the crew aboard the 12-meter-long Lady-Hawke catamaran to engage in marine research activities using advanced monitoring equipment. This includes photographing dolphin fins, recording their sounds, and collecting oceanic environmental data.
My sister who works as a marine biologist has been recommending me to take part in this small journey for the past two years. It was incredible to discover how many beautiful creatures we can find in their amazing habitat, and the work that the guys are doing is essential in order to study the dolphins, to preserve their territory and to guarantee them a safe future. I was born in Taranto and I rarely come back to visit, but after this experience I understood that my land has a lot more to offer than I could imagine. I hope to come back to visit soon. A massive thanks to Monica and Alessandro, I really appreciated the way you treated all guests, and I'm also thankful for having seen you keeping the sea clean from potential dangers like plastic and fishing nets.
Fabrizio T — Google review
This was an absolutely fantastic experience. Initially I was worried about spending 5 hours on a boat but the time flew so quickly that we didn't even realize it. We were lucky to see dolphins, turtles, and many other species on the surface, this is not always possible though and does not depend on the crew... The members of the association were so helpful and polite, they revealed so many details of their work and were careful to answer each of our questions. I was amazed at how respectful they are in regards to the sea life. Make sure to book your trip in advance and get ready to see unforgettable sequences of marine life!

Wonderful experience in a special ecosystem. The team are very professional and knowledgeable, the approach is scientific and the atmosphere inclusive. It is definitely great value for money too.

What an excellent day on board. Really informative and we spent time viewing striped Dolphins in a natural habitat. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. Highly recommended
Ian U — Google review
An amazing experience. It is magnificent to see the beauty, power and elegance of those wonderful creatures. It is unbelievable how close they came to our observation deck and seeing them in their natural environment and behaviour made us simply speechless. The local guides on board are very skilled biologists and they really know what they are talking about. An appropriate English translation was offered, which makes it a wonderful half-day trip also for non-italian speakers like us. We would join this trip for sure the next time we visit Puglia. A big thanks to the entire staff.
Patrick O — Google review
This excursion was definitely a highlight of our trip to Italy. It was well organized and highly informative. Being able to observe these dolfins in their natural habitat was like nothing I had ever experienced. The well being of these animals is of paramount importance to the staff and crew. When we would come upon a family of dolfins they would shut off the catamaran's engine and ask us to speak quietly so as to not agitate the animals. It was an amazing opportunity and one that I would highly recommend.
Cybèle D — Google review
A day that we will always remember and changed our perspective forever. We spent the day with the association on their boat with our 3 daughters (the youngest is 4), and it was amazing. We could see more dolphins that we could dream of (stripped and buttlenose dolphins), playing and jumping in front of our boat. The association members are passionate and do everything to transmit their love for cetaces' and explain how to protect them. The dolphins were never attracted by food or tracked down. If they seem shy, we just stopped following them but the stripped ones were amazingly curious. Even though everyone else spoke English, Juli was kind enough to translate everything for us, which made the tour as educational as it was impressive. Just remember that you need to bring your lunch (drinks are provided for) and sunscreen. No need for swimming equipment since it is no allowed to swim with the dolphins.
Virginie G — Google review
We went on the 20/7 and saw 2 large groups of dolphins (more than 50 in total). It was an amazing and beautiful experience to see them in their natural habitat. The crew is passionate and dedicated to nature preservation and they share their passion with all passengers. A wonderful way to increase awareness on how to help dolphins at individual level. Thank you for you work!

After welcoming us at the entrance, with prior telephone reservations (an English-speaking guide is also available), we immerse ourselves in this Navy journey, where the guide recounts the history of the arsenal, the student workers' school, and the history of the MAS flotilla. The exhibition features a MAS pig, complete with equipment, many models, and countless other artifacts from the Navy's history. The wedding dress made from the soldiers' parachutes is particularly interesting. The tour is free and guided, and takes about two hours, a time well worth investing. San Cataldo's Cathedral is a must-see in Taranto, located on the Ionian coast of Puglia. It is the oldest cathedral in the region, dating back to the 10th century and showcasing a mix of Romanesque and Baroque architecture. The cathedral has undergone various additions and renovations over time, resulting in a unique blend of Byzantine, medieval, and modern elements. Its Baroque-style facade was added in the 18th century.

Beautiful cathedral but some parts require renovation and it’s sad to see how rest of the historic centre looks today.
Yurii L — Google review
One of the most historically important cathedrals in Puglia, dating back to the 11th century. Rich in Baroque architecture, sacred art, and symbols of papal visits. Una cattedrale viva, ricca di fede e storia. Imperdibile a Taranto.
Manea A — Google review
Don’t be fooled by first impressions. The outside looks like just another small cathedral. Walking in it all seems rather plain. You must go further, the ceiling and stone floor near the altar are interesting. You must go to the right side and to the big chapel. That is where the amazement is. A stunning ceiling painting, statues and wall decorations. Don’t miss the crypt either. It is only open to 12:45 in the morning and then in the evening. It is closed in the afternoon, so you need to plan your visit there. It is free to enter.

The sculpture, which is about seven meters high and stands on a pedestal, depicts two sailors in the act of greeting the boats that are about to cross the waterway linking the Great Sea with the Baltic Small, lifting up the Typical cap with his right hand. The work seamlessly with the old railings of the course on which two seas are subject to a five-pointed star emblem of the Navy and the Savoy, and expresses the indissoluble link between the city and the many soldiers who still work there.

Nice statue. Nice views.

Contrary to city's classic (and run down) environment, this is a very modern sculpture. It represents mariners waiving with joy for the passing vessels. It's set at the corner across the Aragonese Castle where two promenades (Lungomare and Due Mari) meet. It's just a quick photo op with some nice views around

Fascinating hidden ruins of an ancient Greek temple in the heart of Taranto. Only a few columns and foundations remain, but the site tells a powerful story of the city’s ancient past. Un angolo archeologico che collega il presente con la Magna Grecia. Worth a stop for history lovers.
Manea A — Google review
The column itself is fine but the area is very sad and very run down. It is really nothing like the pictures. The buildings are falling down yet people are living there with blown out windows and rusty supports. It felt dangerous to walk around the rectangular harbor/historic district. There's trash and graffiti and vagabonds everywhere. I hope Taranto can use Italy's visitor tax to make improvements for its citizens and to preserve the history of this long-lived city.

Like everything in this city, the park lacks maintenance, looks (and feels) completely abandoned and there is a complete disregard for the rules. On the edge of the old city of Taranto, near Piazza Fontana and Ponte di Pietra, you will find the restaurant Risto dei Fratelli Pesce. Efficient service, very friendly and helpful staff. The owner was very friendly. We were 2 people: starters for 2 (consisting of 6 courses including salt cod, friselle with amberjack pate and olives, prawns in filo pastry and mussels au gratin) to which we added 2 local oysters; as first courses, I had the calamarata while my wife chose a trio of tartare. Two glasses of wine accompanied everything. We closed with two coffees and two bitters. All truly excellent. The final bill was 95 euro.

When we arrived at the restaurant there was a small debate about the table we had, but in the end we stayed outside and I highly recommend to do so if you come here. The oysters are delicious, the catch of the day is brought to you at the table and you cand choose. I had 2 types of fish caught in that day. The staff is friendly and very helpful. The wine is good. So, try this restaurant and you will not regret it!

Really great restaurant with very, very good cuisine. You are warmly welcomed and the service is absolutely top. Would come here again at any time.

Exceptional fresh seafood, treated with real respect for the product! Exactly what I was looking for - fish and seafood served simply, with flawless technique and no unnecessary extras. I had the crudo di mare, trio of tartares, pasta with ombrina, tagliata di tonno, and polpo. Everything was incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared. The tuna was perfectly cooked and paired with crisp, well-seasoned green beans. The only slight flaw was the octopus, which had a hint of char from a not fully cleaned grill. The wine list was excellent, with plenty of thoughtful pairings. The owner was very helpful and welcoming, adding to the overall great experience.

Fresh and tasty fish and seafood. Local tipe of pasta with seafood, very good mix of tartar and grilled tuna. And the deserts are also very good.

I don’t recommend the place. First of all we got food poisoning after not much fresh tuna. And besides very big portions and waiter who orders you what to order. And low quality wine. Food looks nice but beside not fresh has absolutely no spices in it.

La Paranza is a charming trattoria that offers a delightful dining experience overlooking the port. The restaurant exudes tranquility and elegance, providing a pleasant contrast to the bustling activity in the port area. Guests can savor delectable dishes such as mussels, seafood pasta, grilled fish, octopus salad, lobster paccheri, and seafood spaghetti.
Fantastic locale, friendly, cheerful and heartfelt service! Our server was fantastic, went through the menu explaining each dish and helped pick the perfect dinner for us. The local fish carpaccio was so fresh and unlike anything I've had yet. The antipasti sampler was a delicious variety of flavours, and the daily chef's special of red shrimp stuffed tortellini was out of this world. The flavors were so clean and distinct, balanced and well thought out. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area, local or tourist!

Raw fish was excellent! Risotto and in general all the food was great. Little bit surprised that was almost empty inside.

Holy cow! The best seafood restaurant in Taranto and I would dare say Italy. Unexpectedly amazing. One dish better than the next. Only seafood, so if you don’t like fish you will lean to love it.
Farsin D — Google review
Apparently not a place you should visit as a non-italian speaking tourist. After waiting for quite a while we were presented the menu, the waiter that took our order couldn't even bring himself to smile and seemed rather annoyed. We asked if one of the starters (for 20€) was enough to share for two people, he said it was. It ended up beeing maybe 8 small pieces of raw fish with a tasteless tomatosauce. After the starter arrived, we waited and waited. Tables around us, even those that arrived after us (and all full with locals, i suppose) were served their primi, their secondi while we just sat there, getting more and more impatient. After beeing there for 1,5 hrs and only beeing served one plate of antipasti in that time we asked how long it would still take. Just minutes later our order came, giving us the feeling we were completely forgotten and only just now remembered. When the food arrived, the plates were basically thrown at the table without a single word or even an excuse. The food was good, but nothing special especially for the price they ask, it didn't make up the overall experience. My partner has been here months ago with a group of locals and the experience then was very different - that's why he wanted to come back in the first place but sadly it was a huge disappointment. We won't come again.

Trattoria L'Orologio

$$$$cheap
Restaurant
Trattoria L'Orologio in Taranto, Italy offers affordable dining with a well-managed and highly organized atmosphere. Their prices are surprisingly low, making it one of the cheapest places to eat in the country. Although the quality of ingredients may be simple and somewhat low, the value for money is excellent. The restaurant can get busy, resulting in a wait to enter, but once seated, service is quick and efficient.
Lovely fresh food, great prices €4.50 for pasta dishes, lovely fish for second plates around €8. Great friendly service, they helped us with some bus information. Highly recommend
Lucia M — Google review
Thought we would try this based on the good reviews. OK if you want super fast food for little money but certainly not somewhere for a relaxing meal. Quickly filled up after opening in the evening. We shared pasta e ceci to start, underseasoned. As soon as the plate was cleared the next course arrived. One small overcooked fillet of sea bass and one involtini di cavello which was fine. With a side dish of fagioli, water and wine the bill came to 28 euros.
Jane M — Google review
Overall acceptable local food with standard mussels and squid; pastas are my favorite. An experience to repeat
Franko — Google review
5 star because of the price you pay for your bill. You will never eat as cheap around the country. Of course the quality of ingredients is simple and pretty low but this place is well managed and highly organized. The line outside can be frustrating at first until you see the outdoor menu that shows pasta dishes for as low as €3. We paid €22 and we ate more than enough.

Trattoria l'Orologio provides great value with affordable prices. First courses under 5 euros and mains for 7 euros. The food quality is decent and tasty - and would totally recommend it if in a hurry before getting on the train.

It is exactly what it says it is! Cheap food for a cheap price. You’ll wait a while (we waited 45 min) and then you’ll order your primi, wait and eat, order your secondi, wait and eat, etc. The servers are nice, the place is huge and packed, and it’s an experience!

We had a wonderful dinner at Trattoria L'Orlogio. Everything was delicious, very well cooked, the service was very fast and friendly. The prices are very low for good quality food. We tried the marinated polpo, the molds, some pasta, fish and meat, everything was very good.

Good service, cheap, fast and food is really good. It is always full and you can't book a table in advance, need to go and wait but it is worth it! It is a really local place where you can have the famous local cozze (mussels) and feel very local. Totally recommend it!

We recently visited Ricci for lunch and ordered two hamburgers along with sparkling water. The hamburgers were delicious. However, the overall cost for the two burgers and water was on the higher side. To add to the experience, the restaurant faced an issue with electricity, resulting in poor lighting in the room. This impacted the ambiance negatively, affecting our overall dining experience. Additionally, it was inconvenient that the cashier did not accept American Express, which was a bit disappointing considering how much we were paying.

Really friendly and attentive staff, quick service, cosy place just in the heart of the city. The burgers are fantastic, you can choose the ingredients from a menu, so it will be exactly for your taste. We loved the chicken 'popcorn', and the best Caesar salad. Highly recommended

One of not many options to have a variety of the Italian food (some fusion included) in this area. Nice service, though you better to learn at least some Italian. Food was tasty, but mussels are pretty small here and soup is missing some flavours.

Booked a meal for 3 here on a busy Saturday night and I dont think I've ever left a restaurant feeling so disappointed, the food was of an acceptable standard but it goes downhill from there, the staff were hurried due to the volume of guests and their attentiveness was curtailed but the biggest factor for me was the atmosphere,it was like a fridge in there and we had to sit with coats on as it was colder in there than it was outside, most other diners were wrapped up,some even wearing scarfs.. We didnt stay for a sweet as we couldnt wait to get out for some warmth, the bill was unnacceptedly high for what we had and the overall feeling we had for the experience was of disappointment and will never be back,it was like eating in a fridge.. Nice place, good food but oh my god, switch the heating on...

The food is very good, the service is okay. They are super fast but we were a bit lost and got not much help with the recommendation. Better to book a place in advance.
Nóra K — Google review
Very average food, maybe even below average. Tasteless seafood. A lot of fried seafood starters that just take away the taste of the seafood. Even tho they have a fridge with fresh seafood, seems like they have trouble with understanding how seafood is supposed to be served. Ordering is a struggle, only one person taking the orders on a full lunch. Would definitely try to find something else around the area. House wine was good, the rest was just disappointing. Clams are super small with no taste. The sauce from the clams is inexistent. The prices are decent, but for the quality of food served is expensive.
Dumitru M — Google review
Seeing the nice looking fresh fish counter just inside the restaurant and a look at recent Google reviews it sounded good, and it was. The seafood antipasti arrived super quick and was really nice, the mussels were the best I've ever have. My second dish of fried fish was also the best I've had, so soft and delicate, gorgeous.
Alison B — Google review
I went to this Italian restaurant, supposedly specialized in seafood, but unfortunately the experience was very disappointing. The food was average at best and the service was terrible – there is no care for the customer, staff don’t listen or take the time to explain. The seafood, although fresh (seen in the fridge), was poorly cooked, tasteless, and lacked any technique. The wine itself wasn’t bad, but it was served in a chipped mug, which once again shows the lack of attention to detail. Hygiene also leaves much to be desired and is far from the standards of a good restaurant. Overall, a very bad experience. Definitely not recommended – avoid this place.

Very good fresh seafood. Good choice of both seafood and fish. One can come and choose the products from the ... kind of fridge and the aquarium. There is an English menu. The stuff is very friendly and helpful. The food is great! The raw seafood is gorgeous. The fish was every good too. The wine is tasty and cheap. The 🍰 (with ricotta cream) was great. We are on vocation in Italy and go to different places and cities every day. Still I'll do my best to come back to this restaurant before we go back home.

Nice concept. Magnificent Pizsa (best in town?), great wines selection. Slightly above local median prices but to get more, a customer needs to pay more. Pity, delivery service has been suspended and beers are a bit boring, at least to me (why not to offer as well some local premium choices?). Otherwise a 5 star would be highly deserved. We found this restaurant a bit by accident, because we were looking for a restaurant open for lunch on Sunday, which is not that easy in Taranto. Luckily Le Due Fontane turned out to be an excellent choice. This fish restaurant has a classic feel to it with it's white and blue interior and the staff is friendly and welcoming. A Seafood Delight and Impeccable Service in Taranto I recently had the pleasure of dining in this restaurant in Taranto, where I indulged in a delightful bowl of mussel soup, and the experience left me thoroughly impressed. Not only was the taste of the soup exceptional, but the restaurant's warm and welcoming ambiance coupled with the incredible staff made it a memorable dining experience. To begin with, the mussel soup I ordered was absolutely outstanding. Every spoonful was bursting with the fresh flavors of the sea, and the expertly blended ingredients complemented each other perfectly. The mussels were plump and cooked to perfection, while the broth was rich and flavorful. It surpassed my expectations, leaving me craving for more. I can also say the same for the first course and dessert. What truly sets this restaurant apart, however, is the exceptional service provided by the staff. From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted with genuine warmth and hospitality. The waitstaff was attentive, cordial, and had an extensive knowledge of the menu, offering helpful recommendations and ensuring that all of my needs were met. Their professionalism and friendliness created a relaxed and enjoyable dining atmosphere. It's not often that you find such dedication to customer satisfaction, and it made dining at this restaurant a pleasure from start to finish. In conclusion, this restaurant is undoubtedly a gem. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone seeking a delectable seafood experience coupled with attentive and friendly service.

Absolutely wonderful food- fresh, tasty and delicious. The wine was excellent as well! Unfortunately, we encountered a very rude waiter who banged the plates onto the table and behaved in a nonchalant and unwelcoming manner . He made us feel quite unwelcome. When I asked if something was wrong, he quickly replied, “Excuse me” (“Scusa”), but the unpleasant feeling lingered throughout the experience. I would never return, which is a pity with such great food.

There must have been a football game on because apart from the chef no one gave a rats arse !! We were given the QR code right at the beginning but the sign came up as malicious re the website menu ( I was not the only one as a couple in the corner had the same issue but I think the wife's phone operates and brought up the menu ) ..but my point being surely you have some back up ..they did after all take our orders on pen and pencil !! Therefore we were shown on a mobile photo a one page menu .. So little choice ... we had an excellent mixed fish ravioli followed by a well cooked piece of tuna and swordfish and despite asking for two different deserts we got the same two....know the chef can definitely cook but there was no hospitality experience everyone spent the majority of their time watching a football match on their iphones ...sad but even an indictment of what I have always considered the dining experience of the world . I visited for close on too 15 years

The food was excellent, although I was very disappointed with the non transparent upselling that was going on. I asked for the menu’s chef pasta of the day (25 eur) and was upsold without knowing the price of the dish fully- it ended up being 100 euros just for the pasta dish, my fault for not asking fully asking but that type of practice is a bit scammy and they took me for a tourist. Sadly will not return or recommend. There are much more authentic and genuine places in this great town.

Transportation in Taranto

Getting around Taranto can be a little daunting if you’re new here. We can help list some of the major public transportation methods if you don’t want to rely on a car.

Nearby airports

Brindisi Airport

Airport
International airport
Salento Airport, also known as Brindisi Airport, is the second international airport in Puglia, Italy. It offers bus connections to the city center and other airports in Foggia, Taranto, and Bari. The airport serves various international destinations such as Zurich and Paris. It is well-designed with clean facilities and ample amenities including two lounges outside of the security checkpoint. While there are limited food options after passing through security, there are good dining choices before check-in.
A small, straightforward airport where everything works just fine. Prices are reasonable, and by Italian standards — it’s actually very well organized. Travelers from northern countries might find a few things to complain about, but that’s more about local quirks than the airport itself :)
Erik S — Google review
Small and easy to access. Most arrival staff not helpful. They do not appear to like Americans. Public toilets do not have seats. Departure staff was helpful and nice.
Bryan — Google review
Airport does not have enough seats in departure lounge for number of flights. No duty free for tobacco or alcohol either. Toilets clean and tidy. Only a restaurant x 2 and shop after security. Priced expensive as you would expect. Would consider flying from here again.
Vin C — Google review
To use the public transport to the town center the Bus (1,20 Euros — tickets are available atthe cafe inside the terminal) goes ONLY every 30 minutes ! In case you take a cab / taxi to the town center or main railway station, a 8min trip, they will charge you an incredible 25 Euros ! But they might ask you to pay 30 Euros. That is a real rip off !!! Returning with the Bus to the terminal the bus route first takes you to the Ferry/Cruise Ship Sea Terminal on the other end of town.
Bbb — Google review
Really easy to go through arrivals and departures. Lack of seating generally, and lacking space around the duty free and shops but departure gates 10 to 14 were empty once through the additional passport control. Staff generally helpful and very accommodating for families with children under 10.

A smaller international airport in Puglia serving destinations like Zurich, Paris. The airport is very clean and well designed and has a lot of amenities. There are two airport lounges outside of the security checkpoint. There are many good food and drink options, before check in but only one after the security section. When arriving you will need an euro for a handle cart or you will be out of luck. There is ample parking and normally run 5€ for an hour. The attendants are helpful if you need any assistance. The first flight normally leaves at 6:25am to get you to the major airport in FCO and it takes an hour. My only complaint is that when arriving, I am always pulled over for a random inspection 😂

Great airport at all! It have 1 terminal and quite much gates. Good baggage check. The staff is great. The second floor after the baggage check don’t have much shops but the 2 duty free’s are great! Yes, good airport at all!

🛫 Bari Airport is overall nice – small but well expanded and easy to navigate. 💺 There’s also a lounge accessible with Priority Pass, which is perfectly fine. 🤕 What’s not fine are the low pillars and beams – you can easily hit your head, which feels quite unsafe. 🧳 Security check was quick and rather relaxed, not stressful at all. 🚆 The train to and from the airport costs €5.30 and goes directly to the city center – great connection, though it runs only once every 50 minutes. 🎟️ Tickets can be bought online or at vending machines using a card, very convenient. ✈️ Overall, a nice small airport – practical and easy, just watch your head! 😅

This is the main airport serving the city of Bari and the region of Puglia. If you are planning a tour of puglia this is the ideal airport. It’s a bit small considering the number of the tourists visiting the region, and hence can get busy. The airport has all the basic amenities for travelers. The food was a let down especially compared to the fantastic food you get outside. Airport has good connectivity via bus and train. Highly recommend the train as it’s only 5euros and takes just 10 minutes to reach the city. It’s extremely difficult to find a taxi so if you are planning to take one please plan ahead. Uber is very expensive. You are better off calling the local taxi companies who can then send a cab.

Abysmal state of the bathrooms, almost no stall has a working lock on the door, two were overflowing, no toilet seats at all. In the only one that had a working lock someone had smoked, I believe overriding the sensor with a toilet paper (see photo) . The air vent probably has never been cleaned given the thickness of dirt in it, which occupied about half of the diameter.

The airport is clean, the toilets are clean, a sufficient number of info displays are arranged. It has quite a sufficient number of express restaurants and shops. I wish there were more places to sit, as well as more positions for charging mobile devices.

I actually love this little airport in Bari for a few reasons. First off, the scale of the place is just refreshing. I'm used to travelling through massive international airports like LAX, BKK, and through comparably larger ones as well like the ones in Orange Country, Tiwan, and even the domestic airport in Bangkok DMK. These places are much larger than Bari and I found the ease of access in the airport very convenient. Drinks are very inexpensive here, including an amazing cappuccino for around 2.50 Euros which is nearly the price you pay in and around Bari all over so great on them for keeping the prices affordable for those travelling through the airport. The location of luggage carrousels and the parking lot and immigration are so close together I felt like I only walked a few hundred steps from my plane, through immigration and baggage claim and then to my driver's car which was incredible. Excellent experience for my wife and our young daughter to begin our trip to the Puglia region of Italy, I highly recommend this airport

Regional airport in Southeast Italy. Customs is fast and efficient. Plenty of car rental agencies on sight.
