Shopping mall

Convention center
Sunshine City, located in the Ikebukuro district, is a vibrant multipurpose complex offering a wide array of attractions. Visitors can explore its numerous facilities including shops, restaurants, an observation deck (reopened in 2016), the Sunshine 60 Building with its Sky Restaurant, and the World Import Building housing an aquarium. Families and couples can enjoy events at the fountain plaza while shopping at Shopping Street Alpa and ALTA.
The mall is conveniently connected to the hotel I am staying. It's big, lots of shops and many good restaurants as well. Plus point for me is that it has pokemon center, bandai cross as well. The sunshine 60 observatory is a very good alternative to skytree or shibuya sky. Although it had the aquarium, I didn't get a chance to visit it. Also, it's only 12 minutes walk from ikebukuro station and it even has an underpass straight to the heart of ikebukuro

If you're around the area with some free time then the aquarium can be a fun stop, but I wouldn't go out of my way to make a purpose trip solely around it. It's not huge by any means but they put in as much as possible. Was a nice way to kill an hour or two. It located on top of a big mall so there's plenty to see there too.
Alex G — Google review
A big mall that is mostly known for the many and huge pokemon stores on the 3rd floor. If you are a pokemon fan this is a must visit. I am not sure much of the other stores are worth a visit. When we visited there was some kind of boy band performing, so that could be a possibility.

Loved visiting Sunshine City! There are so many merchandise shops to explore — from anime and character goods to fashion and cute souvenirs. It’s a great place to shop and spend a few hours indoors. Super convenient location and lots of choices for food too!

Been here 6 years ago. The place did not change. Great spot with children and good option to avoid the heat during summer. Price is totally correct. You can enjoy time in the sunshine city mall before or after, so it’s a top choice
Seba C — Google review
With Sunshine City Prince Hotel here, visiting this mall is so convenient. I’ve been here so many times now, rooms in Prince are still kinda small in comparison to most other Prince out there but you can’t go wrong if you want to live near a Mall like this one.

Come here for Crayon Shin-chan and Pikachu. Cute and fun. Very long Q if to buy Pokémon stuffs. We enjoy our team time at Cafe.

I came here for trying to play the biggest gatcha place in the Japan (as many people stated). To be honest, the location was still quite far from the nearest train station and the place was closing early. If you also want to visit this biggest gatcha place, then you may need my info: They are 2 gatcha places in Sunshine City. The smaller one called gatcha gatcha no mori (if I remembered correctly) was located on either 1st or LG(sorry I forgot). This place closed at 8pm along with most of the stores inside like kiddyland, Pokemon etc. While the biggest one will close at 9pm and the restaurants inside will close at 10pm. The gatcha place is really so big and there are lots of gatcha to play. My experience was just okay because I arrived quite late and only have around 1 hour to play before it closed. The place is clean but they don't have many staffs. Once, my gatcha ball didn't go out and it was hard to find the staff and when I found it, she asked me to wait because another customer already asked her for something (I managed to get my stucked gatcha ball at the end). In my opinion, you don't have specially to come here. There are lots of gatcha too at Akihabara.

Nature & Parks
Sunshine Aquarium is a unique metropolitan aquarium located in a high-rise building, offering an extraordinary experience with diverse sea creatures and an above-ground glass pool. The concept of Oasis in the Sky provides joy, comfort, peacefulness, and relaxation all at once. Conveniently accessible from nearby stations, it features entertaining shows such as seal performances and feeding times for seals, pelicans, and penguins.
Very educational and lots of good exhibits. Watching the feeding times is fun and seeing the seal training was cute. Great photo opportunities. Special collaboration with Demon slayer with exclusive goods. Small size makes it perfect for very small children and parents won't have to walk as much. Connected to a shopping mall for convenient food and shopping needs.
Brittany J — Google review
I especially loved the outdoor zone — the seals and penguins were so cute and playful! The clear water and transparent glass tanks made it easy to enjoy watching them up close. The indoor area was nice too. It’s not very big, but I think it’s perfect for young kids and families. The atmosphere was pleasant, and the children around us looked really excited and happy. ☺️
Kunyong — Google review
My family visited this aquarium today. We bought our tickets online, which made check-in quick and convenient. It was quite crowded, but we still managed to see all the animals. My daughter, who is two and a half, was especially happy and excited to watch the penguins and other animals—it was a wonderful experience for her. The ticket price is a bit high compared to the size of the aquarium (¥2,800 per adult). Personally, I think around ¥2,000 would feel more reasonable. I also hope that in the future the penguins and sea lions will have a larger, more comfortable space.
Dang H — Google review
Sunshine Aquarium in Ikebukuro is a unique and enjoyable destination, perfect for families and marine life enthusiasts alike. The rooftop location offers a memorable experience, especially with the “Penguin in the Sky” exhibit where penguins appear to swim through the air with the Tokyo skyline as a backdrop. The aquarium features a diverse collection of over 750 species, including jellyfish, octopus, sea lions, and otters, all displayed in clean and well-maintained tanks. The sea lion shows and penguin feeding sessions are highlights that entertain both children and adults, while the impressive jellyfish tunnel provides a soothing and mesmerizing atmosphere. The facility is compact compared to some larger aquariums, but the creative exhibits and interactive experiences make up for its size. It can get crowded, especially on weekends and holidays, so visiting on a weekday or booking in advance is recommended. Overall, Sunshine Aquarium delivers a fun, educational, and visually stunning outing in the heart of Tokyo—definitely worth a visit for anyone in the area
Rav C — Google review
Pretty cool spot above the mall (need to take elevator up from inside the mall to access). It’s a little expensive for the size of the aquarium, but they have some pretty neat animals to see and overall I liked the vibe. Even though it was a weekday just after golden week, it was a little busy (not crowded at all, but you were never alone in a section for more than a few minutes), but I guess that’s mainly due to it being in a lively urban area.
Max Y — Google review
It was a rainy day so it wasn’t crowded. The animals are diverse and interesting, plus the location is very cool. The performance with the seals was very entertaining. The price does seem a slightly high for the size of the aquarium. Some of the tanks/enclosures seem a bit small for the animals, especially the octopus but I’m no expert.
Josh S — Google review
It was small and the tickets were expensive compared to the other bigger aquariums. The sea animal shows were good but the adults were more engaged than the kids. I’d say it’s more suited for couples on a date rather than kids. Getting our faces drawn was my favorite part of the aquarium 😅
WW — Google review
This is such a beautiful aquarium situated in a mall! The best part was the open area where you could view penguins, seals and pelicans swimming from below so it looks like they are swimming in the sky! 100% a must visit if you are in the area!

Ikebukuro Station is a bustling commuter hub in Toshima Ward, known for its vibrant neighborhood and accessibility from Tokyo Station. With over a million passengers daily, it's the second busiest station after Shinjuku. The area offers diverse attractions such as a large bookstore with books of various genres, including literary works and specialist publications. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the Sunshine Aquarium near the station, featuring an 'open-air oasis' theme on the rooftop of the World Import Mart Building.
Many stores, foreigner friendly, it's big enough to find whatever you need any go any direction from there but not massive so you won't get lost. Lot's of restaurants nearby, and the shops have big discounts at the end of each season. There is western union inside if you need money transactions and lots of banks around.

One of the most complicated train station that I have visited in Tokyo. It is interconnected to malls, supermarkets, and shopping avenues. It has so many exits and I got lost there, although the signs are quite clear. There are many tourist attractions nearby, especially nearby the east exit.

Unbelievable kindness and professionalism from the station staff! While trying to board a train at Ikebukuro Station, my stroller tipped and my purse spilled—our passports and other important items fell onto the tracks. I was panicked, but the station staff responded immediately with calm, care, and incredible efficiency. The officers arrived with their retrieval tools and safely recovered everything, including our passports. They were kind, reassuring, and truly went above and beyond. In a moment of chaos, they were heroes. I’ll never forget their help and compassion. Thank you, Ikebukuro Station team—you turned a scary moment into a story of gratitude.

This is one of the busiest and biggest station in Tokyo. You can take different subway lines here and you can easily change line here. The road signs are clear and easy to read. It has so many exits here, they named it as East exits , South exits , West exits & North exits . Each direction exit has another 3 or 4 exits, so you have to make sure which exit you need to go in or out. Many big department stores is around this station , you can get into the these stores from the station level , This is the station that you can feel the busy Tokyo life. This is the station I visited most when I was in Tokyo.

JR Ikebukuro at night is buzzing and full of life—definitely one of Tokyo’s liveliest hubs after dark! The station itself is huge, with tons of exits that open up into bright neon streets, department stores, arcades, and endless food options. Right outside you’ll find Sunshine City, a massive complex with shops, restaurants, bars, and even an aquarium—great for a nighttime wander. The nearby East Exit streets are filled with izakayas and ramen joints, perfect for a casual dinner with coworkers or friends. If you’re up for it, Otome Road offers quirky manga, anime shops, and themed cafés that stay open late. Or hop into a retro gaming arcade or karaoke spot—lots stay open until midnight or even later. The vibe is electric but friendly—street lamps, lively billboards, and groups of people heading out for food or fun. It can get crowded, but it’s part of the charm. Getting back is easy too since JR Ikebukuro runs all night on the Yamanote Line and has great subway connections. Overall, it’s a must-see for anyone who loves Tokyo’s energetic nightlife without heading to Shibuya or Shinjuku.
Giftzy_nana — Google review
Ikebukuro is a city within the loop—two department store empires, anime spots, and suburban rail launching in all directions. Students, office folks, shoppers, and cosplayers all thread the same halls. Big, bright, a little wild. Tourist Tip: Watch “East/West” signs—they’re reversed from expectations (Seibu = west gate, Tobu = east gate). Allow time for transfers.
Stray L — Google review
I accidentally entered the wrong ticket gate at the station and had to exit again. When I asked at the Information Center, they told me to scan my rail pass again. However, when I tried to just tap it, the staff member hit my hand back to the Scanner(in a quite rough way), instead of firmly explaining to me, i had to place it on the counter instead of just scanning it. I felt this reaction was unnecessary and unfriendly, especially since I was only trying to follow the instructions after making a simple mistake.

Enkiri Enoki is a small shrine located along the old Nakasendo, known as one of Japan's three major inari shrines. Visitors come to this tiny shrine on a street corner to erect votive boards and seek blessings for influencing their relationships. The shrine offers ema, protective stickers, and amulets through a vending machine inside. It is believed that dedicating votive tablets at the precincts can help cut bad ties and make good ones.

It is a shrine that allegedly helps you to cut bonds with something or someone; Long time ago, people offered wooden plates (ema) praying to cut bonds with smoking or alcohol. Don't be surprised if you find several ema with curses written - some people actually pray for the death of their rivals.

(Translated by Google) It's a place I've wanted to go for years, but buying a votive tablet from a shop in the shopping district is too much of a hurdle (I'm usually in a depressed mood when I pray for severing ties), so I had given up, but the word of mouth about the introduction of the vending machine encouraged me to visit for the first time. When I went there on a weekday afternoon, there was no one there and I was able to pray in peace, but while I was writing my votive tablet, several people came in, and since the site is small, I think four or five people is the limit. The fact that the date is written on the side of the votive tablet shows the consideration of the people in charge, and I felt it was a much more serious place than its occult reputation suggests.

(Translated by Google) The first time I went, I went in the evening, and since it was difficult to write on the ema, I just went to pray. The second time, I went back to pray and offer a votive tablet. The atmosphere changes depending on the time of day, and it was unique and amazing. I was surprised to see how the number of votive tablets had increased so much in just two weeks.

(Translated by Google) I went there because I heard it's the best shrine for breaking off relationships in Tokyo. It's also said to bring good fortune in finding a good partner. Buy a votive tablet from the vending machine, write your wish on it with the magic marker provided next to it, then put a sticker on it and cover your face. The vending machine is open until 9pm. It's a small shrine.

(Translated by Google) I visited the shrine to pray for severing ties with my workplace and with a family member who is ill. Taking the Toei Mita Line, exit at Exit A1 and go straight to the right. When you see a 7-Eleven on your left, cross the traffic light and walk straight to the right. You'll find Enkiri Enoki. This shrine is quietly tucked away in the shopping district. I went on a Saturday around noon, and while there wasn't a long line, there was a steady stream of visitors. They sell ema (votive plaques) from a vending machine, so you can buy one for 1,000 yen each. The ema, netsuke (charcoal ornament), and protective sticker come in a plastic bag. Write your wish on the ema, attach the protective sticker, tie it up, and pray at the shrine in the back. There's a box next to the vending machine to throw away the paper you peeled off the plastic and protective sticker from, so don't forget to throw it away. I wonder if it's okay to take the netsuke home as a good luck charm. I hope your wish comes true. I went there twice this year and wrote on a votive tablet that I wanted to resign in September. One month ago today, I told the president about my intention to resign, and it was decided that I will be resigning next month! I didn't expect it to work, but I think there are many benefits, even though you can't see them! I plan to go back and pray to give thanks soon! (Translated by Google) I visited the shrine to pray for severing ties with my psychopathic boss. Featured in Kiyono Tooru's manga "Tokyo's Mysterious Sake," this is said to be the Kanto region's most powerful spot for severing ties. Kiyono Tooru is said to have severed his ties here, and after visiting Tokyo Daijingu Shrine, married Dan Mitsu, a connection that led to this power spot. I visited just before 11:00 AM on a Saturday, and worshippers praying for severance continued to arrive one after another. However, there wasn't a line. Ema can be purchased at the soba restaurant across the street, or from a vending machine on the temple grounds. There is a writing desk with felt-tip pens next to it, so you can write your thoughts there. A privacy sticker is affixed to the ema, so you can write your thoughts in peace. The second-generation Enkiri Enoki tree was preserved in front of the small shrine. Next to the shrine grounds was a gachapon machine (100 yen) containing fortune-telling slips, but it was broken so I couldn't use it. I also prayed to cut off bad relationships and find good ones. Date of visit: January 18, 2025 [Added May 17, 2025] Perhaps it was the blessing of visiting the Enkiri Enoki tree? In the April personnel changes, my psychopathic boss was transferred to another department, and a close colleague joined in his place. The atmosphere at work has become brighter, which is really great. Thank you very much. I will visit again to offer my thanks. I also wrote about my visit to the Enkiri Enoki tree on my blog, "Takarazuka Street Wanderings." I hope it will be helpful when you visit. [Added October 4, 2025] Although it's a little late, I visited to offer my thanks in September 2025. I will return the netsuke attached to the ema to the thank-you box on the left side of the shrine. There were many netsuke inside the thank-you box. I'm sure the wishes of many people have been granted. After placing my netsuke, I also put my hands together and offered my gratitude. I was able to complete my thank-you visit without any problems, and I feel refreshed. It's like all those difficult days were a lie. Thank you so much. By the way, the gachapon machine next to it, which contained fortune slips, was empty, so I couldn't spin it. I was a little disappointed. (Translated by Google) 1 minute walk from Exit A4 of Itabashi Honmachi Station on the Toei Mita Line. This is a small shop located in a world of concrete and exhaust gas, facing National Route 17 and the Ikebukuro Metropolitan Expressway. There is a ticket vending machine outside the store. Bitter gourd champuru, fu champuru, pork egg, taco rice, and sea grape bowl are just a parade of Okinawan cuisine. I love Okinawan food, so I always keep an eye on it because I want to try that and that. Soki soba definitely has that taste. It tasted like the one I had in Okinawa. The soki was also well stewed and delicious. It was so delicious that I thought it would become a popular restaurant even if it was made in the real place. To be honest, I was expecting something like the Okinawa soba sold at souvenir shops with Okiham retort soba on top, but I apologize for the inconvenience. It was real soki soba. People who give low ratings are probably not familiar with Okinawan cuisine. The bitter gourd chanpuru had a milder taste than the one you get in Okinawa, and I felt it was a little saltier. It's on the bland side for Tokyo. The flavor is somewhere between Okinawa and Tokyo. But it was delicious. It's a little different from the taste in Okinawa, but people in Tokyo prefer salty flavors, so maybe it's inevitable if you're going to open a restaurant here. Set meals range from 600 yen to 800 yen. This price is cheap for this content. If you add half soba noodles, it might feel a little expensive. A large portion of rice and an even larger portion of rice are free. However, if you leave it, it will be 150 yen. I think this is a very good rule, as there are some people who order a large portion just because it's free and leave it undelivered. Sprinkling island chili peppers on soba or chanpuru will make you feel like you are in Okinawa. Okinawan music was also playing, and I was convinced that I was in Okinawa. I can hear the sound of cars running on the Shuto Expressway, but this is small Okinawa. In other words, I felt that I would appreciate a simple restaurant like this more than a sophisticated Okinawan restaurant in the city. Five stars, with additional points from Okinawan food lovers.

(Translated by Google) I was looking forward to the mozuku tempura, but it was different from what you would find on the mainland of Okinawa, and instead was more crispy and crunchy than you would find at a soba restaurant in Tokyo. It's a little oily and doesn't have the texture of mozuku. To be honest, Okinawa soba is top-level delicious. I think it's quite high quality for a restaurant that serves set meals.

You can see Route 17 (Nakasendo) in front of you, so if you head towards Toda, you will find it past Bento and My Curry Shokudo. I visited around 6:45pm on weekdays. There were two customers ahead of us, but they were ordering takeout. First of all, it seems that you buy a meal ticket from the ticket vending machine on the left side of the entrance. However, there are too many menus, and the one on the top left says "kake soba", which makes it even more confusing. . . Since it's an Okinawan restaurant, I chose the "Bitter melon champuru set meal + half soba noodles" for 1,100 yen. There was only one shop owner so I waited for about 15 minutes. Well, it seems like it's slow. Because it's Okinawa. Looking around the store, I noticed that there were a lot of menu items, like a large bowl of rice for a set meal? Oni-mori? There's just too much information out there, like free large servings of soba. So, "Bitter melon champuru set meal + half soba" arrived, and it is a set meal of rice, bitter gourd champuru, half soki soba, mozuku vinegar, and salad. I'll start with the conclusion, but it's not bad, but it's not good either, but it costs 1,100 yen. . . is my honest opinion The soba noodles are crumbly, but the bitter gourd champuru is spam. This is a store that is difficult to rate. However, it doesn't surpass the level of making it at home. I felt calm. It's not bad though. Hmm. Hmm. It's difficult. However, I would go again. . . . I don't know. Since there are many menu items, I would like to go to Yamayama. Sakura Cafe & Restaurant Ikebukuro is a popular spot among locals and tourists, open 24 hours a day to cater to early risers and night owls. The cafe offers international cuisine, beer specialties, and an incredibly affordable breakfast buffet. It's a great place to mingle with people from around the world as it's attached to Sakura Hotel, which attracts a diverse crowd.
Food was very good and very filling! Just perfect, a tad bit too hot but very very yummy. The customer service was excellent, even got off topic but yea very nice and also spoke excellent english. The vibe is nice, only some people were loud but it was only a little bit annoying, no one else seemed to mined the people being loud so we made no fuss about it. Overall very great place for quick food or just to hang with friends or family!

Today was a hot Saturday, my husband and I wanted to go out and try something new and interesting restaurant, we saw that this place has a very big and cheesy hamburg steak, so we came here to try out. It is kind of a hidden place in Ikebukuro, a 10 minutes walk from the station. The restaurant looks big and a bit old from the outside. We went inside and got seated at the outside which we like, the atmosphere here is like a bar and restaurant, feels casual but fun. When you are ready to order, you needed to go to the counter and order it yourself, then they will bring the food to you when it’s ready. They have lots of interesting beer choices from around the world, also different food choices from different countries. We chose the hamburger gratin from Portugal and the oven-baked pork with sauerkraut from Montenegro. The food came quite quick. The hamburger gratin was big and delicious, outside is bread, and inside is juicy hamburg steak, top with cheese and tasty sauce. The oven-baked pork with sauerkraut tasted more like a German dish, the pork slices were big and juicy, there were 2 and 1/3 slices pork with lots of sauerkraut. We were very happy with the portion and quality of the food and drinks. It’s a great place to eat and drink with friends or your date, we will come back to try more interesting food on the menu!

Hamburger restaurant
I tried the "Grill grill grill" burger at Hungry Heaven and it had a perfect blend of flavors. The grilled tomato and onion complemented the meat and sauces exceptionally well. While the social distancing measures were adequate, the counter seats felt a bit too close together. The food was delicious, service was efficient even during peak hours, and the atmosphere was decent. Two burgers with drinks and sides cost around 3400 units of currency.
Second time visiting this spot! I've had manyyyyyy burgers over the years and lived in both Canada and the USA and I'll admit this is one of the best burgers I've ever tried. If you don't know what to try, I recommend the cheese cheese cheese or the pineapple burger. The fries, salads and other sides are all delicious 😋 DELICIOUS

One of the best burgers I had in Tokyo! Variety of selections. Side dishes are great. The veggies inside the burgers are fresh! I wish the burger is little bit warmer, then it will be perfect!!

Delicious burgers, great variety and super nice staff. I’ll come back many times for sure. We tried two popular burgers based on reviews: “Cheese cheese cheese” and “Pine & Cheese” (grilled pineapple and cheese. I added extra bacon. No need tbh). Both were really good. I liked that I had the choice to make a combo with other than fries. The options included green salad (my choice), tomato salad, mashed potatoes and coleslaw salad. They pride on their beer selection, and I was happy to find they have a good soft drinks variety as well. Jasmine tea and several juices were nice to see besides oolong cha, typical Coca Cola and orange juice. Happy to have this spot in Itabashi.
Lucía P — Google review
The food is nice but the store itself rather small. Smoking is allowed at dinner time (unfortunately) and you might end up on a cramped counter seat unless you reserve a table. Huge, huge selection of burgers and sauces. Highly customizable. We're talking dozens. The fries are just ok.

I popped in on my way to Ikebukuro because I knew I could get a delicious vegetarian sandwich. Although Hungry Heaven is essentially a burger place, if you search carefully through the menu you’ll find a sandwich section & there is a single item proudly marked as vegetarian friendly. Take the North exit from Kami-Itabashi Station, turn left along the train tracks, walk a few metres & take the stairs where you see a small sandwich board. Enjoy!

Had the "Grill grill grill" burger which had a fantastic balance of flavors, and especially the grilled tomato and onion complemented the meat and sauces fantastically. The social distancing mechanisms are alright however people at the counter seats are a little closer. Food was good, service was prompt despite it being full and atmosphere was reasonable. Two burgers with a drink and side each cost about ¥3400. Note: the burger was great but the tomato "salad" was near inedible.

Not the best picture...because I couldn’t wait to eat this beauty! They have a variety to choose from and customizable everything. The staff has a recommendation list if you’re in doubt or just cannot choose from the long list. The beer list is good as well with both import and export. Random life-sized Superman was a bit creepy, not going to lie.

Musashi Ichinomiya Hikawa Jinja is a historic Shinto shrine founded in 473 BCE, making it one of the oldest and most significant shrines in Japan. Located in a park with cherry trees, a zoo, and a museum, the shrine attracts large crowds during festivals and special events like hatsumode.
It is a great walk along the 2 km approach to the shrine. This shrine has a history of 2,500 years. During the year-end and New Year's holidays, many Japanese visit the shrine to pray for good health!

This is a historic shrine set in a beautiful park with water features, ducks, koi and turtles. The sense of peace and tranquility fills you as soon as you enter. We happened upon it by accident, walking back from the Bonzai Village. It was so beautiful, and we enjoyed playing our respects at the temples inside, as well as veiring the gardens and wildlife. The koi were especially friendly. There are signs warning not to feed them. Thought the park, there is a children's playground, and a zoo as well. We returned the next day to visit the zoo.

Nestled just outside Kitaku, the Itabashi Botanical Garden is a hidden gem that beckons nature lovers and curious travelers alike. This enchanting garden showcases an impressive array of over 1,000 plant species across its four distinct zones: the Intertidal zone, Tropical lowland forest, Community landscape, and Cloud forest. Visitors can wander through beautifully designed greenhouses filled with vibrant tropical palms and delicate orchids while enjoying the soothing ambiance created by water features like a small waterfall and mist generator.
I live nearby and often visit this botanical garden. It’s a perfect place for kids — they can enjoy watching fish and exploring different kinds of plants. There’s also a cozy reading corner and a space where children can do some coloring. There’s also a nice restaurant with a kid’s menu, which makes it very convenient for families. The entrance fee is only ¥360 for adults, and it’s free for kids. A very relaxing and family-friendly spot! 🌿🐠📚

This place was a gem! My son loves plants and going to a garden would be so hard due to the severe summer heat. This botanical garden has an aquarium. It also has some animals and insects to view. The green house has a place for tropical plants and a cooler area to replicate the climate for cooler plants. So far, it has the most amount of insectivorous plants on display. It is the only place we’ve been so far in Tokyo that has アルソミトラ on display. Which was a pleasant surprise.

The plants are beautiful and the explanations about Malaysian flora are interesting. Overall the place would get 4 stars if there were no animals or if they had better enclosures. The stingray is miserable, the bigger fishes have tiny aquariums and no plants and no space. Please do better for the animals in your care.

Akatsuka Park is a metropolitan park that opened in 1974 and is located just a 10-minute walk from Takashimadaira Station. The park stretches along the Takashimadaira Danchi and Metropolitan Expressway Route 5, with its central area featuring a large fountain.

The park itself has so many amenities that you can enjoy. Me and my family had a fun here this Obon Yasumi. We enjoyed the fountain were you can dip your toes and water play with your kids , a very spacious barbeque place that is free ( Just reserve days before your plan date 9am-3pm online) and a very nice blend of nature in the middle of a city here in Tokyo. The only thing that I can wish is that I hope they will improve the condition of their toilets and also to have a small area where you can buy stuff needed for barbeque or sports activies. We will surely come back here for more family bonding and memories.

Beautiful autumn foliage, especially the trees near the playground get a stunning rusty orange shade. Nestled within beautifully landscaped temple gardens, the Tokyo Daibutsu is a magnificent bronze Buddha statue that stands 13 meters tall and weighs an impressive 32 tons. This serene site is surrounded by stone idols and offers a tranquil atmosphere perfect for reflection. Located near the historic Akatsuka Castle ruins, it forms part of a cultural hub filled with art museums, botanical gardens, and shrines—ideal for leisurely strolls.

I love this small temple. There are no large tourist crowds, and it's peaceful. They close early, but it's a must-see if you are in Itabashi and are interested in visiting temples. I’ve been coming here with my family for more than 20 years. It’s a special treasure of our neighborhood, and I am somewhat grateful that more people don’t know about it. New Year’s Day is can be a long wait. This last time we were disappointed that there weren’t any vendors selling food stalls in the parking lot as we are used to seeing. We left hungry, but happy as always to see our buddy the Buddha. When I speak with others who are from the Tokyo area, most say they never knew that there is Japan’s third largest Buddhist statue right here in our humble hood. If you haven’t come to see it yet, I highly recommend it. The nearby Botanical Gardens also beautiful, especially in the fall and spring.

If you're on the hunt for a delicious culinary experience, look no further than White Gyoza Takashima-daira. Originating from Noda City in Chiba Prefecture, these gyoza dumplings are a delightful treat with their crispy exterior and soft interior. The unique thick skin is deep-fried to perfection, offering a satisfying crunch that pairs wonderfully with the rich vegetable filling infused with just the right amount of garlic—ideal for enjoying alongside a cold beer.
(Translated by Google) OMG, this place deserves a 4. You can eat crispy, hand-made dumplings while watching them being made. For some reason, it's even busier before noon. After noon, there's seating, but I waited about 10 minutes. Perhaps the price is a bit high, which is why it's rated so low. However, the dumplings are crispy, like they were fried in a cast-iron skillet. The skin isn't too thick. Colored papers of Matsuko, Director Manaka, and the broadcaster are displayed at the entrance. There are several stores in Tokyo, but was this one easy to get into? Perhaps because the time was right, I was able to get a larger seat even if I was alone. For now, I ordered the most default-looking grilled gyoza set with 8 tons of soup (8 gyoza, pork soup, and rice, no pickles or side dishes). "I can't order additional gyoza, is that okay?" I was told, but the rules are pretty strict. But since it's my first time and I don't understand it, I feel bad leaving it behind, so I'm going to make a set of 8. There was no explanation for cold drinks, but it seems like they are self-serve. It seems like the tissues are just magnetically attached to the side of the water tank. The table seasonings are soy sauce, vinegar, chili oil, ichimi (for pork soup, I think), and oil ichimi (the stuff that often collects at the bottom of chili oil). The set meal arrived without a long wait. I took a photo of the back side, but only the bottom is fox colored and the wrapped side is different. Is it wrapped like Shumai? The thick skin is well-baked, so it has a texture similar to baked goods. This is because the bowl of pork soup with astragalus is too hot...it's a relatively light pork soup. When it comes to gyoza chains, I can't help but compare them to Ohsho and Manchuria... Even though the taste of the gyoza depends on your preference, I wonder if the cost performance is a little better... Another thing is that the location is quite strange... well, it's okay if it's spacious. The staff was average, the payment method was cash, and the customer base that day was not very good. I guess I'll have to decide after eating at other restaurants... When I came to the store on a weekday evening, I was able to get in right away ❗️ There are about 10 autographed colored papers displayed inside the store, and it seems like celebrities and famous people have visited the store✨ By the way, white gyoza originated in Noda City, Chiba Prefecture, and it became white gyoza because the first chairman learned how to make gyoza from Mr. Haku in China. This time I ordered the 12 ton soup set meal (1,245 yen including tax)! A set meal consisting of 12 grilled gyoza and pork soup Each white gyoza is handmade in the shop, from the skin to the wrapping! When I tried it, the bean paste had quite a bit of garlic and was delicious. The sweetness of the gyoza skin may be its characteristic! The sauce is made by yourself, and in addition to soy sauce and vinegar, there is also homemade chili oil, and we recommend adding plenty of chili oil to change the taste. The pork soup had a sweet and gentle seasoning using Hokuriku miso, and it was delicious with lots of green onions! Why not come and try some white gyoza? Baikeo is a delightful Thai restaurant that offers a fantastic lunch experience with an array of about six dishes to choose from each day. The menu features popular options like green curry, pad thai, and gapao, all tailored to suit Japanese palates. Diners can enjoy generous portions; even those who opt for smaller servings find themselves satisfied. The green curry is particularly noteworthy for its mild flavor profile, making it accessible for those who prefer less spice.
Ordered Thai curry and Mini Ramen combo for 1020 yen. It had volumes and quality. The rice with the green curry wasn't Japanese but had moist in it or Japanized for the locals but the texture was good. The noodle wasn't soggy like normal southeast asian restaurants. You can drink orange juice, jasmine tea, apple juice etc. Definitely worth trying.

One of a kind experience I had in Japan. I chose to have a course meal they offer and was delightfully surprised. The servings were handful and the staff was just way too sweet. (Translated by Google) It's been a while since I last visited Yoshimura! It was a collaboration event with a liquor store, so the menu might have been different from usual. We enjoyed high-quality food and a variety of fine sake while looking out at the beautiful garden. Since it was a summer event, we also had some sake on the rocks. All of the sake was quite flavorful, so even on the rocks it still complemented the food perfectly! Every single dish was delicious! The corn puréed soup and the Junmai Daiginjo Tokutoku on the rocks were a particularly great pairing. The slightly sweet sake went perfectly with the sweet corn, and the unpasteurized sake added a nice accent to the food! The grilled hassun (seaweed) further increased our alcohol consumption! There was an abundance of conger eel, sweetfish, and hairtail fish, and the vinegared mackerel was also delicious! And the dessert was delicious! The coconut milk was great, but the black beans on top were also delicious. I asked and found out they sell them in the store, so I bought some to take home! Nature & Parks
Ikebukuro Nishi-guchi Park, also known as Ikebukuro West Gate Park, is a vibrant urban space located near Ikebukuro Station's West Exit. The park features a bustling paved plaza with a fountain that often hosts open-air festivals, concerts, and other events. Renovated in 1990 alongside the Tokyo Metropolitan Theater, the park boasts an artistic ambiance with various art installations scattered throughout its spacious grounds.
Interesting and aesthetic architecture in my opinion. The water fountain in the centre sprays water to different heights in intervals with mist in between the sequences. The water show does cool the air so that you can feel it. Simple wooden benches circle around the park. The park is popular, so you need to prepare yourself for waiting if you want to sit there. The location close to everything makes it ideal for rendezvous

A small park with a circular structure on top of it. Definitely great for a 360 degrees photo op. There's a public restroom located right behind the Global Ring cafe. It's called a park but there are no plants, there are several benches near the bus stops, great for waiting for your next bus. Located just right outside the west exit of Ikebukuro station, this place should only take 5 minutes of your time to take photos. Views are even better at night.
Bayu U — Google review
I dropped by Ikebukuro Nishi-guchi Park to take a short break, and it instantly pulled me into its unique rhythm—lively yet somehow calm at the same time. Street performers fill the air with music, people chat by the fountain, and the energy feels warm and spontaneous, not chaotic. Even with all the motion, there’s a relaxed undertone, like everyone’s sharing the same slow heartbeat beneath the city rush. Benches are easy to find, and the open space feels welcoming at any hour. A perfect little stop to soak in Ikebukuro’s lively charm without feeling overwhelmed.
Stray L — Google review
A great event place with a lot to offer. The location itself is very central and accessible. This area has a lot of restaurants of different variety. Though a busy area, crowded with tall buildings, the Global Ring (event place and stage) is quite big and spacious. Also, the place has different food trucks during events.

This place is clean even at 6am in the morning! I was here waiting for my bus to go to Narita Airport. The public toilet nearby is also surprisingly clean at that early hour in the morning!

Nishi-Ikebukuro Park is a small park in the heart of Tokyo that features children's play equipment and beautiful spring cherry blossoms and autumn colors. The park is great for hanging out with kids, as the barrier-free toilet is only available until 16:00.

I bought some foods from combini nearby and I have no idea where to eat since they don't provide chair or table, and I found this perfect place. It was really good to sit down and relax here enjoying my meals. There were a lot of birds during winter. The location is strategic

Shrine
Sacred & Religious Sites
Nestled in the bustling district of Nishi-shinjuku, Shinjuku Juniso Kumano-jinja Shrine is a serene religious complex featuring 12 small shrines dedicated to different deities. Originally enshrining the main deities from the historical province of Kishu, it now hosts a local deity of Shinjuku. The shrine's modern reconstruction after World War II still preserves its cultural significance and traditional Japanese design.
The architecture of this temple is simply stunning. It embodies all the traditional elements of Japanese design, and the beautiful garden is truly impressive. The atmosphere inside the temple is incredibly peaceful and serene. Finding your way to the temple might be a bit challenging, but it's definitely worth the effort. Junisha Kumano Shrine Haiden is a unique gem among temples in Japan and a must-visit destination for anyone who appreciates beauty and tranquility.

Very Nice park and shrines near hotel within 15 min walking distance. Park had beatiful flowering vibernums( hydrangeas) lining the sidewalk paths. Shrines were difficult to find due to a little construction in the park area and maps couldn't really figure out where it was trying to led us. We got there eventually. Glad we stick with it. There was about 12 small shrines dedicated to 12 different deities. Very nice clean safe peaceful place. Also enjoyed watching the goldfish in the pools.

Large wooden shrine at the edge of the Shinjuku Chuo park with many out buildings and garden areas with beautiful water features. Very well maintained and still used by many as a place of prayer and silent reflection. Worth a short walk through to experience the calmness of the shrine.

Really nice shrine adjacent to Shinjuku Central Park. Well maintained and quite historical by all accounts. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

A lovely temple in the middle of West-Shinjuku, its really quiet and the best part is that its open 24/7 (but they only sell shrine and temple goods until 16:00-17:00 in the evening I think). I love the back part of the temple area, the small red bridge with the small shrine may be my favourite part of it all!
Grrumakemeangry — Google review
A wonderful temple inside the chuo park. A quiet place for meditation. Very pretty during cherry blossom. You can walk from the park to come here. They also sell some temple merchandise.

Nature & Parks
Garden
Nestled in a serene corner of the city, Nanushinotaki Park is a delightful escape for nature enthusiasts and casual strollers alike. Just a short 10-minute walk from Oji Station, this circular garden features stunning waterfalls, including the prominent Otoko-taki Waterfall with its impressive 8-meter drop. Once part of the famed Oji Shichitaki series, it’s now the last remaining waterfall in the area.
This place is a nature lover's haven. The park is a hidden paradise tucked in a residential area not too far from Oji station. It is about 7 minutes walk on foot from the station. From the outside it could be easily mistaken for a shrine due to the unique design of the entrance. I usually come here whenever I want to connect with nature but don't want to go hiking or too far.The great thing about this place is that Entry is free. Upon entry you will come across a large pond with turtles swimming in the pond, resting on the rocks or simply basking in the sun.the pond also contains different colours of koi fish (carp), as a side not feeding the fishes is not allowed. The park is well maintained and feels like rain forest when visited in the spring/summer due to the abundance of trees which makes the air always smell fresh. There are two shelters/gazebos where one can sit or simply have a picnic. This park also has some waterfalls which adds to the calming effect of this hidden gem. But a downside to the location of this park is that you can hear the sound of the trains going by from time to time. You can easily spend hours in this park without realising. I have visited this park in all the four seasons and it's been amazing as the park comes alive with the colours of all the different seasons. I highly recommend visiting this place whenever you're in the area

北区立名主の滝公園 Kita Ward Nanushinotaki Park In the Edo Era, 畑野孫八 Magohachi Matano, the headman of Oji Village built a waterfall on his property and opened it to the towns people to relieve the summer heat. In the mid-Meiji Era, a local trader, 垣内徳三郎 Tokusaburo Kakiuchi created a mountain stream for the locals. In the Showa Era, a company operated a cafeteria and swimming pool in the garden but it burned during World War II and was in ruins. After the war, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government purchased the site and restored the garden, opening it as a paid park in 1960. It was transferred to Kita Ward and is now a park with no admission charge. There are many rustic paths and staircases as well as bridges around the park. I visited on the day of the nearby Oji Inari Shrine Kite Sale.

Ōji Inari Shrine is a captivating Shinto sanctuary that stands as the principal shrine for Kanto's Inari shrines, boasting a rich history that dates back over 1,000 years. Each year, it hosts the enchanting Oji Fox Procession, where participants don fox costumes and perform traditional folk dances.
Large fox shrine in oji. End of annual New year's kitsune parade. Definitely recommend as a new year excursion. The beginning of the parade is a smaller shrine across the train tracks. There you can find fox souvenir and masks for the occasion.

First visit! I was surprised to find a kindergarten within the shrine grounds. There's this stone that if it feels heavy when you lift it, your wish might be hard to fulfill, but if it feels light, it's more likely to come true. Overall, it's a shrine surrounded by greenery and it's really soothing.

Very nice shrine with a few Tori Gates and if you walk a bit further into the back then you'll find more inari statues, gates and another smaller shrine.

A good shrine to visit. It has a long history. This shrine is famous for a forktale or one of the stories in Rakugo, traditional Japanese comic story telling. This shrine was painted in some Ukiyoe. On the New Year's Eve foxes gather to this shrine with mysterious fire. Hiroshige Utagawa painted this story on his Ukiyoe. So they have an walking-in-a-line event after this on New Year's Eve.
星野浩 — Google review
A rather big shrine with a kindergarten on it's terrirory. You can sometimes see children helping at work as miko. There are a few smaller shrines at the back part of the territory, one of them has a big stone. You can make a wish and inagine the stone's weight, then lift it. If the stone is lighter than you thought, your wish will come true.

Matsuya is a popular spot that captures the essence of don, offering a quick and affordable dining experience. As you enter, an ordering kiosk with English translations makes the process seamless. The meal itself is simple yet satisfying, featuring rice, thin beef, egg, and sauce. Breaking the egg over the dish adds to its appeal. While not extravagant, its charm lies in its delicious simplicity.
🟠 Adventures in Tokyo. *************************** ❇️ Went to this Matsuya 松屋 eatery at Nishi-Shinjuku 5-chome on my first visit to Japan a few years ago. ✅️We had delicious beef rice don meals here. You get your meal ticket from the vending machine and pass it to the counter staff who will then prepare your meal. 🟨 I remember clearly it was lunch rush hour on a Thursday, but everyone inside the eatery was silent and they all ate quietly. 🙏🏻The Japanese were so considerate of others. ✅️ Eat quickly & leave as there is a queue outside. I have a very good impression of them and their courteous ways.

Otani offers a pleasant dining experience with excellent food and a friendly retro atmosphere. The restaurant provides on-site parking, making it convenient for visitors. While some guests have mentioned management and service issues, others have praised the delicious and reasonably priced meals as well as the speedy service. The restaurant's festive decorations during holidays make it a recommended spot for families to enjoy a meal together.
Amazing old restaurant, it’s like a trip down memory lane. The food is nice, if you like the old recipes, good volume. The staff is spot on, you could almost feel they came with the walls… If you’re in old japanese places, you’ll love it! If you’re not, you should at least experience it!

The food was delicious and reasonably priced. The service was speedy. Didn't like the appetizer though. Too much cabbage.

The food is excellent and it's a very nice atmosphere. There's parking at the restaurant itself on the ground floor. I would say the only down point about it was the management. A bit scary and not exactly friendly. The same kind of feeling was reflected in the various waiters that came. It was a manager who was a bit off. But if you can get through that you can certainly enjoy a good meal.

(Translated by Google) #Tokyo #Itabashi #Kumano #RestaurantOtani #JumboBurger (Egg) #Rice Personal Rating: ★★★★☆ Price: ¥1,800 + ¥380 (Rice) This Western restaurant has been on my mind for a while. It has a wonderful atmosphere. I came during the weekday lunch hour and it was empty, so I was able to get in right away. The interior has a coffee shop-like feel, with stylish stained-glass windows and a great atmosphere. The staff were also incredibly attentive, quickly refilling the water as it got lower, and providing spoons for families with children to make eating easier. And this time, I ordered the Jumbo Burger (Egg). I chose it from the recommended menu. It was smothered in a slightly sour ketchup-based sauce, and the juicy, satisfying hamburger steak was incredibly satisfying. The miso soup that came with it was also well-seasoned and delicious. By the time we left, it was a popular restaurant that was almost full, even though it was a weekday. Red Lobster Kami-itabashi is a highly recommended seafood restaurant that offers delicious cuisine. While the prices for their lobster dishes can be quite steep, it is better to visit after lunchtime when they have a more affordable lunch menu available. The restaurant has remained unchanged over the years in terms of location, service, quality, and prices. This consistency is impressive considering the ever-changing nature of the Japanese economy.

Four menus is too many to be presented with at lunchtime. The food was tasty, bit I was not happy with the portion sizes (very very small) and I was concerned at, how quick my food arrived, it made me think that it was all just reheated.
