Nakatsugawa in 5 days

If you only have 5 days to spend in Nakatsugawa, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Nakatsugawa is a gateway to the historic Nakasendō route, with preserved post towns like Magome-juku offering stone-paved streets, wooden inns, and views over the Kiso Valley. It’s a good base for hiking, especially the popular Magome–Tsumago trail and nearby Mount Ena. The town is also known for chestnut sweets (kurikinton) and seasonal scenery, including spring blossoms and autumn foliage. Traditional hot-spring inns in the area add a classic rural Japanese stay to a visit.
With favorites like Toson Memorial Museum, Hiroshige Museum of Art, Ena, and KURUMA-ya, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like ちこり村 (バーバーズダイニング) and Masuya so you can get the best taste of Nakatsugawa while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Historical landmark
Magomejuku is a charming stop on an ancient mail route, featuring centuries-old water mills and traditional noodle shops. The family-run atmosphere adds to its rustic appeal, although service may be affected by the presence of busy children. Meal times are early and prompt, with meals laid out for self-service. However, the locally influenced food is delightful.
Once upon a time, when the common Japanese had to travel, he/she traveled on foot. As a result, there were many small hamlets along the major routes called "shukubamachi" (宿場町, literally "inn location town"). Magome-juku was one such place along the Kisoji (木曽路 Kiso road which is a part of the longer Nakasendo (中山道)) where many of the original buildings have been maintained, and many of those are still in use as inns, gift shops, etc. This is one of four "shukubamachi" along the Kiso Kaido that has been designated a Nationally Designated Architectural Preservation Site where the buildings are being preserved. What makes Magome-juku different from most other "shukubamachi" is its location on a mountain slope. Most others are located in a valley, near a waterway. This makes Magome-juku unique and provides some fantastic vistas. I first visited this site about 20 years ago. At that time, not even many Japanese knew of it, so it was very quiet throughout the day. However, with the coming of the Internet came tourists from everywhere. This is not necessarily a bad thing, of course, because it provides the town with the income to maintain itself. However, I did find it slightly disappointing. So, for the best experience, I suggest you visit at the earliest possible hour and enjoy the serenity that this place provides.

We loved the place. We arrived very early in the morning and were almost by ourselves. The shops and restaurants were still closed so we hiked to Tsumago, took the bus back to Magome and the stroll the enchanting post town

Explore Historic Towns, Walk among traditional wooden houses, teahouses and shops in Magome and Tsumago. Savor Nature, Experience the beauty of the Japanese countryside as you hike through woodlands, bamboo groves and rice paddies. Walk the Historic Trails, take a trip back in time by walking along stone-paved paths from the Edo period that are still in use today. It is about a 10 km hike, a medium difficulty trail. Don't forget to ring the bells to keep the bears away during the hike ☺️

Little village with historical scenery and beautiful historical feeling. There is a hiking 🥾 path from Magome to Tsumago (8 km), which was wonderful experience.

Famous post town along the Nakasendo road. ℹ️ Great information center with friendly staff and brochures. Get a stamp for your souvenir book, too! 🥟 Great food stalls, including regional specialties. 🌰 Chestnuts are huge in this area, so try the chestnut soft serve. Also try the stuffed buns (called Oyaki) that are a specialty. 🛍️ Lots of souvenir shopping. Magome-juku is different from some other postal towns (like Nakatsugawa) in that it's purely running on tourism. So, great place for souvenirs (go somewhere else if you want to see locals!) 🚍 You can take a bus from Nakatsugawa, stop is at the train station . 🚶‍♀️If you want a really fun adventure, walk from Nakatsugawa! (And put your bag in a coin locker at the station) It's about 2 hours along the Nakasendo, is well signposted. 🚻 Many well-marked, clean toilets 🥾 If you're hiking the Nakasendo, I can't recommend it enough! Although the Magome to Tsumago portion is the famous part, there's so much more to it! ❗ I've created a public list for recommended Nakasendo spots, check it out.
Stacey T — Google review
Although not as large scale as Narai-juku, Magome-juku feels more picturesque with its gently sloping cobblestone street, functioning water mills, and beautiful mountain range as the backdrop. It is a popular point along the Nakasendo Trail that connects to Tsumago-juku. There are several free resting spots along the street, with souvenir shops and restaurants throughout. We tried the Hida beef croquette and bun, both were delicious. The chestnut ice cream was also a pleasant treat. We parked at a free parking lot near two large souvenir stores, which was a convenient starting point for exploring the area.

This is a great place to visit. There's a brilliant hike of 8km to Tsumago, but beware! The last bus back leaves at 16.40. Magome has lots of charming houses, restaurants and shops, but be careful as they all close at 17.00. There is nothing open after that!
J S — Google review
Beautiful starting point for tourists to walk a lovely part of the Nakasendo trail to Tsumago-juku. In case you don't want to walk about 3 hours the town itself is really worth to visit. Nice architecture and old authentic buildings all over the place. You can also shop and dine here.

Hiking Trails
Tsumago-juku is a well-preserved historic post town that once served as a vital stop along the Nakasendo Road, a 500km trade route connecting Kyoto and Edo (now Tokyo). This charming town features restored 18th-century homes, a 12th-century shrine, a 16th-century temple, and a museum. The townscape has been designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
I started walking from Nagiso station and most of the trail is uphill. Walking through small village, road, a bit of forest. Weather was really nice around 20-23 degree with bright sunny. It was really fun trek.

A very beautiful village where history and nature come together. A nice experience, but unfortunately, as a tourist you mostly need cash, cards are not accepted in many shops.

Loved the walk from Magome to Tsumago - the first 3km are straight up, around 10 to 12%…then you descend along streams and rivers. Very beautiful and highly recommended. It’s 8km however there is an optional extension to the waterfalls which is 3.5km one way…so you could get 15km of hiking if you wished.

The End of the Road: Nostalgic Quiet in Tsumago-juku The arrival at Tsumago-juku was the highlight of completing the charming hike from Magome. After hours of walking the ancient forest paths of the Nakasendo, the main restored street, with its traditional wooden houses, offered a welcome and peaceful respite. However, as the day drew to a close, it seemed the ancient village entered a state of slumber. The quiet was absolute, yet the options were limited: most shops and galleries that operate during the day had closed their doors, with only a few lights shining behind the madobe (windows). For the weary travelers, the challenge shifted from walking to logistics: finding a hot meal before the return bus arrived. With a very limited service menu, only a small variety of places remained open—perhaps a humble Ocha-ya (teahouse) serving a final bowl of noodles, or a small shop selling the sweet and satisfying local delicacy, Gohei Mochi. These are precisely the moments when one experiences Tsumago-juku most authentically: not as a tourist destination, but as a quiet, tranquil village. The wait for the bus, facing the ancient wooden houses under the shifting evening sky, becomes a moment of reflection and serenity, where the taste of hot Miso and the murmur of the nearby river mark the successful end of the historical adventure.

A trip to remember. We took the roughly 4h30min long Nakasendo Trail from Nakatsugawa to Tsumago-juku and it left us speachless. The Ochiai cobblestone path felt like magic out of a Ghibli movie and the well preserved edo houses of Magome & Tsumago led the way into a journey theough time. We‘ve stayed at the Masushiroya Ryokan and had a fantastic time and food there. The nightime lantern walk was my personal favorite! #TrustmeIamGerman

We wish we had spent more time there! Beautiful and has a very helpful tourism office. (They even helped us find vegan-friendly accommodations.) Delightful coffee shop that sells local art. A great town for nature and buying souvenirs that are NOT made in China.

Part of the Nakesendo trail where there are a few shops opened along the trail selling traditional crafts. Most of the original structures we're maintained. A bit of ascend but definitely worth the walk. Like walking through the past.

Chicory Village is a popular spot known for its traditional sweets and farm-to-table foods. Visitors can learn to make the traditional sweet, although some find the flavor too subtle. The lunch buffet is a major draw, with online reservations recommended due to its popularity. The buffet offers a variety of healthy and tasty options, including tempura and an impressive salad bar. Overall, Chicory Village is worth visiting for those seeking fresh and delicious food with a chicory theme.

(Translated by Google) I went there and bought some! The "Kurikinton Fresh Bread" I bought at a kiosk a few days ago was pretty good. I had been planning a trip to Ena and had always wanted to visit Chikori Village. These two ideas combined, so I decided to visit for the first time. [Exterior/Interior, etc.] - A factory-attached store. Plenty of parking. - Inside is a souvenir shop and buffet restaurant. - They were just serving freshly baked "Kurikinton Fresh Bread," and there was a line. It's a very popular shop. [Purchase] - Boxed Kurikinton Fresh Bread, ¥2,100 [Review] - Freshly baked bread is best if you're eating it right away. Apparently, the boxed (oxygen-free packaging) is recommended for takeaway. I chose the boxed version. -When I got home, I ate the bread right after opening it, and it was fluffy and moist with the hot water, and the flavor of the chestnut paste and butter was delicious. Nestled atop a bluff overlooking the Kiso River, the Naegi Castle Ruins, also known as Misty Castle, are a captivating glimpse into Japan's storied past. Constructed in 1532 by Toyama Naokado of the Toyama clan, this historic site was strategically positioned to allow ancient warriors to keep watch over both land and water routes.
The remains of a castle. You can see some of the old stones and ruins of it. View is pretty good at the top. Toilet is well-maintained and very clean. We walked from Nakatsugawa to the castle. Took about 1.5hrs with some photo-taking along the way. You can do that or take a bus to Naegi and walk 1km+ there.

Excellent historic landmark worth the hike or bus ride from Nakatsugawa. Great views of the surrounding countryside with interesting information regarding the period and development of the castle. We arrived late morning on a Saturday during Summer and it wasn’t very busy. Public amenities are available and clean

It's about an hour's walk from Nakatsugawa Railway Station. From the station head north and take the road bridge across the Kiso River. Then immediately turn sharp left and walk down the footpath to the quiet minor road and follow it west along the north bank of the river. After a few hundred metres and a sharp left bend you'll see a sign in English for Naegi Castle Ruins. Hike for about 20 mins up to the ruins.

Not much of a castle is left, but the view is beautiful and it’s fun to imagine the castle that was once there. 1/24/2024 update It snowed so I decided to check out the view from the castle after work and it was GORGEOUS. After admiring the view and playing in the snow, I got a hot drink from the vending machine in the parking lot and warmed up my freezing hands 😁

A fantastic site for a castle. Panoramic views over the valley in which Nakatsugawa lies, views over the Kiso and Agi rivers. So an important landmark for the local Lord to control. The castle and surrounding buildings are gone. We can create and build beauty on our rich world. Then time, ignorance, anger and sometimes greed wears them down. The walk up from the Kiso river is worthwhile. It's not listed on Google maps. However it offers a winding trek to the north gate.

Been here twice now, we walked from Nakatsugawa Station - a fair walk but pretty beautiful... walked along the river to a path up the back of the mountain, a fair climb up but great exercise :) the place itself has GORGEOUS views towards Nakatsugawa and the surrounding peaks. I'm sure there are bus services to the peak if you're not up for the walk and climb, either way i love this lookout!

Ruin on top of a mountain. Only the foundations remain. There is a viewing platform on top from where the surrounding mountain range can be seen. The hike up the mountain is steep and it takes around 40 minutes to get there from the Nakatsugawa station in a fast pace. There are multiple signs explaining which parts of the castle were formerly here, however they are only in Japanese but QR Codes to an English explanation is provided.

(Translated by Google) I went for the breakfast menu, which is only available on weekends and holidays. I usually can't come here because of work, so I took a day off just for this! I wish they'd open on weekdays too! You can choose rice or bread for 600 yen (750 yen for rice with salmon). The rice is all-you-can-eat, and you can choose one bread from the bakery section for under 230 yen. The salad bar, drinks, miso soup, soup, and stir-fried vegetables are all-you-can-eat! You're limited to one boiled egg per person. Wow, this is a bargain. It's so popular, it's no wonder it gets so crowded. The salad bar has a wide selection of sprouts. I used to dislike pea sprouts, but thanks to this place, I can now eat them. I also tried the chikori, which was slightly bitter and seemed healthy. The lunch buffet I saw as I was leaving looked really delicious, so I decided to go back for lunch later. It's around 2000 yen until August, and a little more expensive from September to December. Is it because it's chestnut season? It was very crowded, even though it was a weekday. I'm not sure if it was because of summer vacation or just normal, but it might be a good idea to make a reservation. And because it was so busy, there was a one-hour limit. The seats were cramped for two people. Huh? An hour for lunch? I wish I could have eaten more slowly, but it was cheap, so I won't complain (or at least I'm complaining). Okay, I have to hurry and get it! I went to check out the food, and there were a lot of vegetable-based dishes! There were so many varieties, and I wanted to try them all, so I tried a little bit of each, even some vegetables I'm not a big fan of, but everything was delicious.♪ Wow, a cooking method like this! I'm thinking about trying it at home. I went four times, but I couldn't try all the varieties! What a shame! Even in an hour, it was quite a lot to eat. The watermelon was incredibly sweet and delicious. It's quite far from my house, so I can't go there often, but I'd like to go again on a drive. (Translated by Google) It's so popular that when I called to make a reservation a week in advance, I was told they were already full. I heard that online reservations through E-Park would open the same day from 9:00, so I prepared for the day. However, E-Park still wasn't working after 9:00, so I called. Apparently there was a system glitch, and they called me back and took another number. So, I was seated in order. However, the queue wasn't particularly smooth, and it took about 10 minutes to get a seat. The menu features a wide variety of vegetable-based side dishes, all of which looked delicious, making it hard to choose. Since so many customers enter the restaurant at the same time, it took a long time to get the side dishes. I think it would be smoother if they had a designated entrance for the side dishes. It took about 30 minutes for the side dish, rice dish, and drink corners to be fully lined up. Since the restaurant's name is Chikori Village, I decided to try some chikori. It was fresh, somewhere between Chinese cabbage and lettuce, and very delicious with no strong flavor. The other side dishes were also quite simple in flavor, which was nice. I ended up feeling more full than I expected, and unfortunately only managed to eat about 70% of what I had planned to eat... I wish there had been fewer people, which is a bit selfish of me. The service over the phone was great, so I'm giving it a higher star! (Translated by Google) The selection gradually decreases after lunchtime, so I recommend going as early as possible. All the vegetables are absolutely delicious. The menu mainly consists of the sort of home-cooked meals you'd often see, but it's completely different from making it at home. It felt like I was sampling each household's starting lineup of side dishes. The salad was so delicious I had a second helping three times. The menu mainly consists of vegetable side dishes, but they also have small amounts of fried fish and chicken. The roll cakes and cream puffs, which are probably baked in the bakery corner inside the store, are also very tasty. The time limit is a short 60 minutes, so it's not the kind of atmosphere where you can leisurely savor a meal, but if you want to fill your stomach with healthy and delicious food, this is the place to go. Masuya is a charming and authentic restaurant located in Magome, offering some of the best soba dishes in the area. The menu includes English descriptions and photos of the dishes, making it easier for international visitors to order. The owner, a friendly elderly lady, may not speak English fluently but provides excellent service with the help of an English menu and gestures. The atmosphere inside is calm and air-conditioned, providing a pleasant dining experience.
A lovely traditional-style restaurant. The soba noodles were delicious, and the home made plum juice is a must try. Very friendly service even though we mainly had to order by pointing!

Nice local handmade soba . We tried the vegetable soba , the chicken soba and the cold soba with yam . The Gohei mochi rice cake was different with the rice texture still evident but the seasoning was spot on . It’s one of the better ones I have eaten .

I visited this restaurant in the mid summer 2023. Atmosphere inside is calm and air conditioned. I ordered lunch menu which is cold Soba and Gohei mochi. Noddle stiffness is good and taste of soba soup is deep. Gohei mochi smells increase appetite, miso taste is elevated with sesame. Staff were kind and polite, it was really good break under strong sunshine.

Stone Museum Hakusekikan is a delightful destination for families, especially those with young children. This engaging geology museum features an impressive array of stone sculptures and intricate carvings from various cultures around the globe. Visitors can explore a fascinating exhibit filled with crystals and stones, including a unique pyramid housing a piece from Egypt at its center.
I went just because I was passing by, and I was surprised! I paid ¥1,000 to enter, but you get a voucher to enter for free another day! Parking was free! There is an exhibit of crystals and stones from all over the world! There is a pyramid, with a "stone" from Egypt in the center of it! You can walk inside, it is small but interesting! Fun for kids, for sure!

I went with my 10yo and 8yo kids, and they were so excited to get so many beautiful gems! Staff people were all so kind as well. There are some covered lunch spaces outside, so you can bring in lunch to enjoy. We fully enjoyed the activities and the experiences!

Very cool trouist attraction, the kids can find nice stones in the water stone search. Cool maze under the Egyptian pyramid. Lots of other cool activities over in the big shed Highly recommended, return discounts available too.

It looks like this site used to be, or perhaps still is a type of quarry, but cleverly re-purposed into a fun and interactive museum about stones, mining and geology. Kids and adults alike can try pansifting for gold, silver or gem stones, treasure hunting with metal detectors, and exploring the maze at the bottom of a large stone pyramid.
Adam P — Google review
It’s ok. Nothing special or super interesting to be honest. You’ll get some cool photos of the pyramid and there’s a maze inside that’ll keep kids busy for 15 mins. There’s also some fossilised dinosaur poo. You can pick out various kinds of gems/rocks/stones/minerals from sand and keep them. There is also a gallery there but not much on display we we went. And some old fashioned toilet seats.

Museums
The Hiroshige Museum of Art, Ena is a small museum housing an impressive collection of around 1,500 works by the renowned woodblock print artist, Hiroshige. Known for his graceful and stylized depictions of popular travel destinations in Japan, the museum offers visitors the opportunity to create their own traditional Japanese woodblock prints.
I visited the museum as part of my SDG project with NUCB. A beautiful, modern museum located in a quaint town that yearns to grow. We met with the museum’s director and had time to create our own wood block prints. I hope more people get to visit once the shinkansen station is built nearby!

Fantastic little museum where you can try printing ukiyo-e! There are two exhibition rooms, a video area (in English) and an area where you can try your hand at printing. The gift shop has a wide selection. With professional reproduction from the Adachi foundation being a highlight!

Absolutely fantastic little art gallery. I was so grateful that the wood block printing process was explained in English, too. I just wish the explanatory texts for each picture had been translated as well. The educational videos were also very informative. Even though I am a fully grown adult, I still enjoyed the opportunity to make my very own wood block print in the gallery and though it is far from perfect, I will take it home with me and treasure it.

Keiseian is a charming family-owned buckwheat soba restaurant located in the picturesque town of Magome-juku. The cozy eatery offers a delightful dining experience with its warm hospitality and delicious cold soba. The noodles are perfectly cooked, boasting a satisfying texture that pairs well with the flavorful dipping sauces and soups. While the restaurant does not offer an English menu, visitors appreciate the authentic atmosphere and friendly service provided by the owners.

Located at almost the end of the village. A short walk distance from a bus stop (not the main bus stop). A family type of buckwheat soba eating house, simple decoration but comfortable Japanese table. At the entrance, there is a grinding machine. English menu not available. The wild vegetables and mushrooms soba was hot and delicious.
Larry L — Google review
A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Keiseian and indulging in their delectable cold soba. I must say, the experience was nothing short of fantastic. From the quality of the food to the warm hospitality, this place truly made my day, especially during my visit to the charming town of Magome-juku. The cold soba I ordered was absolutely delightful. The noodles were perfectly cooked, firm yet tender, and had a satisfying texture. Each bite was accompanied by a refreshing burst of flavors that left me craving for more. What made the experience even better was the fact that they offered complimentary tea, and to my delight, they had sobacha, my personal favorite. The combination of the flavorful soba and the comforting sobacha tea made for an unforgettable meal. Aside from the culinary delights, Keiseian played a significant role in enhancing my overall experience of visiting Magome-juku. This beautiful town is known for its historical charm, and the restaurant perfectly complemented the ambiance with its traditional yet welcoming atmosphere. The attentive staff and their warm service added an extra layer of enjoyment to my visit. As a pleasant surprise, once I finished my soba, I was served soba-yu, a traditional Japanese drink made from the water used to boil the soba noodles. It was a unique experience for me, and I truly appreciated the opportunity to try something new and immerse myself in the local customs. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Keiseian for the fantastic food and the memorable experience they provided. If I have the chance to visit this beautiful town again in the future, I will undoubtedly make it a point to return to this remarkable establishment. I highly recommend Keiseian to anyone seeking a delightful culinary adventure and an authentic taste of Magome-juku.

The vegetable soba was rich with different kinds of mushrooms. The noodles are made from buckwheat. It is located on the corner of the intersection and has a parking lot that can accommodate 35 cars. The restaurant is very spacious and has two types of private rooms, partitioned table seats, and tatami seating. There are about 150 items on the menu at any given time, so it's hard to decide what to order. I ordered a set of warm gomoku kishimen noodles, three pieces of sushi, and tsuke kishimen noodles and seven pieces of sushi. Even though it's a chain restaurant, the staff brought it to me instead of a serving robot. It even came with chawanmushi, so it was a great deal. Nestled in the heart of nature, Tsukechi Gorge is a stunning steep-sided ravine that transforms into a vibrant canvas of autumn colors. This picturesque destination boasts an array of outdoor activities suitable for all ages, from hiking along its well-maintained trails to marveling at the breathtaking waterfalls and crossing exhilarating suspension bridges. In summer, visitors flock to this serene spot to escape the heat and enjoy refreshing dips in crystal-clear waters while soaking up the negative ions emitted by cascading falls.
In late December, the waterfalls here are nothing short of magical, with a light dusting of snow adding to their natural beauty. The scene is tranquil and awe-inspiring, as the frozen mist catches the light in a way that makes the landscape feel like a winter wonderland. The drive is easy and smooth with snow tires, making it accessible even in the colder months. After exploring the falls, treat yourself to a soothing soak at the local onsen—there's no better way to warm up and relax after a serene day in nature. A perfect winter escape!

A beautiful gorge tucked away in nature. The park takes about 45mins to 1hour to walk through. Take your time and don't rush. The views are great. Just be careful of your phones on the suspended bridges. Visited in March 2025. Water view looks great and clear.

Even though the weather was not perfect, still it is a visit worth. Maybe because I went there on a Friday and mid November the number of visitors was just nice and relaxing. If you have problems with hight, this is not your spot to go. For all other travelers with a bit of time, it is a day trip worthwhile. At the end you can relax in a big and very nice Onsen just 1 minute from the bus stop.

The falls are nice. However you can only get close access to Kannon Falls. Sentaru Falls path access was closed. I'm not sure if the entry is permanently closed or temporarily closed. After reading another review it looks like the path has been closed for a couple of years. It would be nice if the path was fixed. I couldn't find information on the entry. It is worth a visit, but just one larger fall has good access.

Great, easy hike. We went on the weekend and it was very crowded so I would recommend the weekday, if possible. Beautiful views!
Jim Z — Google review
There's two different sections to the waterfalls. Main area you walk down stairs to see the Tsukechi falls but you can also walk up away from carpark and there are streams that lead to a waterfall dam structure. 1 hour gives you time to see both. Carpark is free. The fruit ice cream is sensational. It's worth doing this fall in conjunction Ryujin Falls on the same day.

Theaters
Kashimo Meijiza Theater, established in 1894 by dedicated local volunteers, stands as a testament to the rich tradition of Ji-Kabuki, an amateur kabuki performance style that thrived during its inception. The theater's construction was no small feat; it took nearly two months and the collective effort of around 100 locals to remove a massive tree from the site.
(Translated by Google) This is a kabuki hut for Jikabuki. It is still in use today, and is used for Ji-Kabuki performances and concerts, and has even been used to celebrate the succession of famous Kabuki actors. Although it's a little difficult to find from the national highway, parking is free and there's no entrance fee, but the guide was very thorough in explaining the place, and I'm very grateful. Not only could I fully enjoy the atmosphere of an old-fashioned Kabuki hut, but I was also able to walk along the flower path and be shown around the stage equipment and dressing rooms, including the soft-shelled turtle and Naraku, which was a valuable experience. I think it's a really wonderful facility. The guide takes a little time, and since you are the only one, you may have to wait. However, you can still have a wonderful experience, so please take some time to stop by and check it out. I had a very meaningful time with a local storyteller who gave me a fun explanation and guided me around the stage and backstage. (Translated by Google) I decided to revisit since I was in the area. This time, I had plenty of time, so I enjoyed looking around the museum while being given an explanation. I was a little surprised to learn that the magnificent lattice ceiling that was installed during the major restoration in 1947 (Showa 22) prevented the building from being designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Apparently, they were told that the building would be designated if the ceiling was removed. Without the ceiling, the attic would be visible, so it was installed to prevent dust and dirt from falling onto the audience seats, and so they never considered removing it. An application was later made to Gifu Prefecture, and on July 12, 1972 (Showa 47), the "Kashimo Rural Stage (Meijiza)" was designated as a "Gifu Prefecture Designated Tangible Folk Cultural Property." Furthermore, on March 5, 1997 (Heisei 9), the "hikimakuri" (folding curtain) was designated as a "Nakatsugawa City Designated Tangible Folk Cultural Property." This was donated by local women when the Meijiza Theater was built, and it bears the theater's name and name from that time. It is also featured on the tenugui hand towels sold here. We were very happy to finally get an explanation of the hanamichi (walkway) and see the naraku (abscond). They also demonstrated how the stage curtain (asagimaku) is lowered in one go, and we enjoyed helping to put it back in place. It was quite heavy to grab the rope and hoist the curtain back up. This is where the phrase "maku ga ochiru" (the curtain falls) comes from. The view of the stage from the second floor seats seems to convey the excitement of local kabuki. Backstage, there is a large room for the main actors' dressing rooms, and graffiti written by the actors is a historic treasure. We heard that the thatched roof has been undergoing repairs in recent years, so we donated 500 yen per curtain. The planks are apparently made from chestnut and sawara. Hand towels were also 500 yen. Izushi's "Eirakukan" was also nice, but the "Kashimo Meijiza," which preserves the atmosphere of a traditional theater, is a place I would highly recommend to anyone interested. ~ ... This theater, said to have opened in 1894, still primarily hosts performances of "Jikabuki." It is designated an Important Folk Cultural Property by Gifu Prefecture. The 24th classical concert will be held on June 1, 2024. The 50th "Kashimo Kabuki Performance" is scheduled for October 27. In 2006, the theater hosted the name-taking ceremony for the 18th Nakamura Kanzaburo. In 2024, the "Nakamura Kankuro & Nakamura Shichinosuke Spring Kabuki Special Performance 2024" will also be held. According to the staff, Nakamura Kankuro complained of feeling unwell (apparently had a fever) 10 minutes before the show was to begin, and Nakamura Shichinosuke had to take over the role of Benkei at short notice. Another performance is scheduled for around November of this year as an apology. Reservations are not required and admission is free, but a 500 yen donation is required to cover maintenance costs. If you wish, the staff will also explain the interior of the building and show you around backstage. I didn't have time to go backstage on the day, so I would like to visit with more time next time and see the backstage area (the abyss). There is parking for about five cars in front of the theater, and if you turn right at the intersection just before Meijiza and cross a small bridge, there is a larger parking lot shared with Yantani Park that can accommodate about 40 cars.

(Translated by Google) It's in the countryside...it's quite a journey from nearby Nakatsugawa City. But it's worth the trip! You'll generally need to travel by car. The exhibits are easy to navigate and well worth seeing. You can learn about everything from individual minerals to their industrial uses. You'll probably have a chance to talk to the curators when they're there. However, some knowledge is recommended for a more enjoyable experience. If you're simply looking to see beautiful stones and gems, it may be a disappointment. We did the crystal hunting attraction in the scorching August sun...but we only lasted 30 minutes. The volunteers were very considerate...I think they were worried about heatstroke. While it depends on the season and weather, it's a fun experience. Beautiful crystals can be found in the gravel brought from the local quarry. This time, we found small pieces that appeared to be quartz and beryl. Unfortunately...the ones you find are extremely small. And you're only allowed to take one home per person. The souvenir section is tiny, about the size of a cart. After all, it's a museum...an academic institution. Bringing drinks and a packed lunch is recommended. We randomly visited this place as we drive to Nagoya and this museum is definitely worth visiting not only for international travellers like us but also for anyone who is interested with learning about crystals, many Earth metals and geology as a whole. (Translated by Google) It's a great facility for anyone interested in minerals, and even if you're not that interested, it's a wonderful museum where you can learn about the ores, geography, and history of Ena and Nakatsugawa through minerals. While the museum has many hard exhibits, it also hosts events where you can search for crystals outdoors, which even small children can enjoy. The souvenir shop is minimal, and there are no restaurants or dining areas. Parking (free) is located right next to the museum. There is an adjacent park where you can stroll around. Drove to Ryujin Falls from Takayama for 2 hours. Beautiful falls with the wooden path. However, parking is a bit steep at Y1000 with Y400 donation per person to visit the fall. In addition to the cost for car rental, fuel and highway toll. Not worth it to visit with the costs added up. I would visit again if there is a bus tour from Nagoya or Gero Onsen.

My favorite waterfall. It's easy to get to by bus, you don't have to hike up the mountain. It's got an iconic red bridge and a small shrine. You can swim, camp or fish along the river. There are bathrooms. If you do want to hike, you can contiune - but it is a paved road, not a trail, and this right near the entrance is the prettiest.

Beautiful place, if you have the time to do the hike( a bit hard if you are not in good shape or have some injuries) it worth it, doesn’t take much time to the 5th waterfall, it took me around 1.5hrs going slowly. Just need to take care as the bridges are not in good conditions.

Sights & Landmarks
Momosuke Bridge is a large wooden suspension bridge with a nostalgic feel, built in 1922 and considered one of the oldest of its kind in Japan. It holds historical significance as it was constructed by Mr. Momosuke Fukuzawa, known as 'The King of Electrical Power' for introducing hydroelectric power to the country. The bridge is located near a train station and offers picturesque views and photo opportunities.
Stayed at a nearby apartment after our Nakasendo hike to be near Nagiso station. The beautiful white rocks and blooming cherry blossoms and azaleas helped create a spectacular view.

Large wooden suspension bridge with a nice nostalgic feel. Near the bridge is a sculpture of the grieving woman sitting on the rock with her chin in her hands set up in 1960 to commemorate the victims of a debris flow that occurred on July 20 1953. The monument clearly depicted the tragedy of the incident.

(Translated by Google) I have been coming here for half a century (since the previous generation) to enjoy sweetfish dishes. Reservations are required to enjoy freshly baked and fried food❗ Both the fried and salt-grilled dishes are delicious and you can bite them all over the head 🎵 Ayu takes a lot of time to prepare, so I think it's a good idea to let us know how much you'd like to order in advance when making a reservation...I think you'll be able to enjoy your meal more smoothly. The crunchy texture and flavor of the sashimi are unique to sweetfish...and the appearance is as expected from a kaiseki restaurant. If you would like to eat while looking at the river, please let us know when making your reservation. If you have small children, you may be able to ask for a small room, depending on the number of children. Once the sweetfish season is over, it's time for kaiseki cuisine. The autumn leaves 🍁 around the store are stunning. This time, smoked sweetfish was used in the rice porridge. It has a nice flavor combined with the scent of river seaweed. When you bite into the sweetfish, the flavor that oozes out from the meat is unique to smoked fish. It's also nice to be able to enjoy rice porridge without worrying about bones. When I think of sweetfish, the only thing that comes to mind is salt-grilled, but I was surprised that this was the first time I had eaten it in my life. It was very meaningful to be able to eat while listening to the detailed explanations of someone who loves cooking at the same table. The sashimi was thicker than I expected, fresh, and had a firm texture. The rice porridge with three pieces of grated smoked sweetfish was so delicious that it filled my already full stomach. Roast duck appetizer also 💮. There were also many famous brands of cold sake, and it was delicious. The guest rooms faced the rapids of the Tsukechi River, and when you opened the windows you could enjoy the exciting sounds. 220917

No matter when you eat kaiseki cuisine in spring, summer, autumn or winter, it looks and tastes impressive, but this time we had a course meal of sweetfish, a taste of summer, in the evening. The appetizers looked as beautiful and delicious as expected. All of the dishes were excellent in terms of heat, taste, and presentation, and the work was done with great care, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ayu. In particular, the ayu sashimi served with Tosa soy sauce and vinegared miso had a crunchy texture, and the more you chewed it, the more the umami came out. We had a blissful time enjoying delicious sweetfish dishes while looking out at the Tsukechi River at sunset. Located on GoogleMaps, 芝ヵ瀬食堂 is a highly sought-after establishment known for its exceptional adhesive quality. Customers flock to this popular eatery, arriving well in advance of their opening hours. The menu boasts a variety of delectable options such as boiled cutlet and miso cutlet, all paired with just the right amount of rice to satiate one's appetite.

What?! To be honest, if I hadn't known, I wouldn't even know it was open, as it has such a retro look. I was a little nervous when I entered. In the kitchen, an older man was cooking silently and efficiently, with an older woman supporting him. Another energetic and cheerful older woman was running the dining area by herself. I was aiming for the (Motsuni) but unfortunately it was sold out, so I had the (Dote Donburi). The softly stewed dote rice was a perfect match. My partner ordered the pork soup set meal plus a single order of fried chicken. The pork soup was packed with ingredients, and the amount of ingredients just kept coming out (lol), and I was surprised at the mountain of fried chicken. Even though it was almost the end of lunch hours, customers kept coming in, and by 2pm when it closed, the restaurant was full. I was energized by the sight of the older man and woman managing such a large number of customers. It might be difficult to find a spot if there's a line. [How to Order] Order verbally. The staff seem to ask in the order you enter, so look at the menu and wait. [Items] I ordered fried shrimp and a dote-don. There are so many fried foods on the menu, it's hard to decide. I'll have to visit a few times to try them all. The dote-don is a staple at this restaurant, and many people order it. The deep miso flavor makes you want to eat it all in one go. You can't go wrong ordering it. The portion of fried shrimp is also generous, so it's very satisfying. [Other Information] By the time I left, the parking lot was full, and it was a popular restaurant with long lines. The restaurant has the appearance of an old-fashioned set meal restaurant. The quick-cooking menu items come out quickly, which is very helpful for people in a hurry who can't afford any time. Fried foods seem to come out after you've finished eating the quick-cooking menu items, so be careful what you order if you're visiting with a group. (Translated by Google) An Early Morning Stroll in Nakatsugawa-juku, a Post Town Before Wake I arrived in Nakatsugawa-juku as the sky was just beginning to lighten. The shop curtains were still closed, and the streets were deserted. Yet, it was this silence that seemed to reflect the town's true essence. Counting from the Edo period, this post town was the 45th. It once flourished as the leading commercial district in eastern Mino, lined with honjin (main inns), wakihonjin (secondary inns), and inns, welcoming travelers and feudal lords alike. Walking the streets, vestiges of the past peek through the udatsu-style townhouses, square-shaped roads curving at right angles, and lattice-framed sake breweries. Long-established chestnut confectionery shops line the streets, and in the quiet before opening, one can faintly hear the hum of history. During the late Edo period, figures like Kogoro Katsura and Hirobumi Ito hid here, and records of secret meetings within the Choshu domain remain. Such stories blend seamlessly into the town's atmosphere. The town is approximately 1.1km long. During the Edo period, it was home to 928 people and was a bustling economic center, with a Rokusai market held there and the price of rice determined. Today, in the quiet morning light, the energy of that time quietly lives on. In the early morning, Nakatsugawa-juku, still dormant as a tourist destination, quietly shares its historical memories with travelers. I listened intently to those voices as I walked the deserted streets.

(Translated by Google) 10/10/2025 Nakatsugawa-juku often appears in history books about the end of the Edo period, with events like the Nakatsugawa Conference, the marriage of Princess Kazunomiya, and the Mito Tengu Party. I wasn't expecting much, but the post town has been significantly restored, allowing me to relive its past to a certain extent. It's a shame that the original inn remains, replaced by a parking lot, but the secondary inn has been relocated next to the historical museum. According to records, there were 29 inns at the end of the Edo period. Only a dozen or so houses remain in their original form. Future restoration efforts may see further progress in response to the demands of the times.

Ochiai-juku Nakasendo is a historical site located in Nakatsugawa, Japan, which used to be one of the three post towns along the Nakasendo Road. While not as well-preserved as Magome and Tsumago, Ochiai-juku still boasts a splendid appearance with its main shrine being the only remaining structure from its post town days. The area offers natural beauty surrounded by mountains and an atmospheric townscape that exudes a sense of history.
It was a nice surprise to start the Nakasendo hike from here instead of Magome, by walking from Ochiai to Magome you will cross many scenic points and the cobblestone road. Almost no people except for two locals on the way. The town itself is also cute and quiet

This was so interesting and I’m rating it 5* because of the lovely staff who showed us round and gave us tips for our hike. I loved seeing the history of this building and we were able to purchase a souvenir for our Nakasendo Trail hike. Definitely suggest stopping in as part of your walk!

Almost every tour on the classic Nakasendo walk will tell you to start from Magome to Tsumago but if you like to extend it a little I suggest to start from here. If you come by train, take the local one to Ochiaigawa station and reach this place that marks the old spot of the former "juku". From here take the street that goes south and crosses the main road. After that you can't go wrong, the path is clearly marked. Even if you don't speak japanese, when you're not sure just look for 中山道. Or just ask, anyone will be glad to help you.

(Translated by Google) As a building that symbolizes Ochiai-juku and gives a sense of the Edo to Showa eras, history buffs should definitely visit. It seems that they also accept hometown tax donations to cover the costs of repairing the building. I would like to look into this in more detail and contribute in any way I can. There are no toilets in the building, but in the park about 50 metres away, so it is best to use the toilet before visiting.

Italian restaurant
We enjoyed great pizza, salad, wine, and dessert. Consider making a reservation. They were full even though there were a couple of empty seats when we arrived. We asked if we could come back later and that worked.

This restaurant is awesome. Firstly, although we are not the local, the waiter was so nice and patient explaining the menu to us. All the meals we ordered were so delicious. I suggest "butter yolk pasta". I could feel the chef paid attention on each step he cooked. I love it. The important thing is that though it calls Italian food, it indeed produced a mixed culture meal, Japan + Italy. That is awesome.

If you need a break from seafood noodles, this place does really good pizza and Italian beer. Nice, attentive staff who speak English. I thought the price for pizzas, 2x beer each and a dessert was pretty good too.

Excellent pizza place. Friendly, good service and great wood-fired pizza oven. My family of 6 (Australians) ate here and really enjoyed it, a welcome change for the kids after a few weeks of only Japanese cuisine. Highly recommended.

Do not go there, we went for dinner at 19hs, when it is supposed to close at 21hs. All the tables occupied, so we ask if we can wait, and the guy who attended us said no way he has to go home. We were the only one couple waiting. Obviously he doesn't care about tourists, just deserved that no tourists go there.

The worst pizza I've ever had. Raw dough and almost inedible. Dont waste your money.

Soba noodle shop
KURUMA-ya, a soba noodle shop, has received positive feedback despite some considering it pricey. The prices for their Kake and Tororo Zaru (2nd dan) options, at 750 yen and 1500 yen respectively, are deemed reasonable. The portion sizes are adequate, especially the two-tiered Rusa. Additionally, they serve warm Soba hot water after meals during winter season – an uncommon feature.

(Translated by Google) After visiting Ryujin Falls, I stopped by for lunch. They only serve soba noodles and a little tempura. No rice dishes either. It's rare to find a restaurant like this where you can't enter if you don't like soba noodles, so I went. I ordered Zaru Soba and shrimp tempura. Soba 1400 yen, tempura 1100 yen. The price makes you look forward to it! It comes with two plates of soba noodles. It's delicious. The broth is also delicious. The tempura is two shrimp, pumpkin, shishito peppers, and eggplant. It's freshly fried and delicious too. If I had to say something, I think it's a little small for men? 🤔 I feel like I can finally fill my stomach after drinking the soba soup. Chinese takeaway
On May 3, 2023, a new and unforgettable Chinese soba set was ordered at Gyoza no Ohsho - Nakatsugawa Interchange. The dish exuded a sense of tradition and nostalgia with its old-fashioned yet delectable taste. While the fried rice might not have been to everyone's personal liking, it is highly recommended to try the Chinese soba.

(Translated by Google) postscript I often eat Chinese food, but this time the ingredients other than vegetables were 1 mini scallop, 1 small shrimp, and 1 quail. No meat. Even though it says ``Lots of seafood, meat, and vegetables.'' . When a university student's part-time job creates it, it may be troublesome and a lot of things may be omitted. please note. Everything on the menu was on point. The downside here is the quality of the staff. The aunties like the ones you often see have the worst customer service. Well, there are several aunties, so there's only one of them. Of course the gyoza was delicious, but the rest of the menu wasn't that great. However, I usually feel safe no matter what I eat these days. Gyoza Ohsho is famous for having different flavors and menus depending on the store, but even at this particular store, the flavor and spiciness will vary depending on when you go. Of course it is important to always produce the same quality, but it is also proof that it is handmade. Although it's not pictured, the menu item called Shintama Ramen is super cost-effective and highly recommended.

This is just my own personal preference, but if they'd been more considerate, I would have considered going again, but I won't be going again. Hiking area
The Magome Pass hiking area offers peaceful forest trails with stunning views of Mt. Ena and the Tono plain, as well as a chance to see waterfalls and hidden spots along the way. The trail can be walked in either direction, with both routes being manageable but featuring different levels of steepness. Visitors should make sure to take advantage of alternate paths for the best possible views, while also keeping an eye out for plentiful restrooms throughout the hike.
Amazing! Had an incredible day walking the pass with my mom. We walked in direction Magome to Tsumago, which was definitely easier than it would have been the other way round. After Tsumago we walked further to Nagiso Station. This part of the walk we saw less hikers coming our direction. In the middle of the trail there was a tea house with an elderly man serving us tea for free. He does it with so much care, a great resting moment. The trail has beautiful nature and was a great way to clear our heads.

Another town popular with day trippers but is also on the Nakasendo Trail. I stayed overnight. Be aware the town basically shuts up shop at 5.00pm and nothing remains open. So if you want food/dinner you need to organise with your accommodation, which also is limited and needs to be booked in advance. The town seems more set up and upgraded compared to its sister Tsumago. It's still pretty and lovely. Both are photographers paradise. Well worth a visit.

Steps Back in Time: Walking the Magome-Tsumago Post Town Trail The walk between Magome and Tsumago is a journey through time. It's the most famous and best-preserved section of the Nakasendo Trail, an ancient trade route that connected Kyoto to Edo (modern-day Tokyo) during the Edo Period (1603–1868). Today, this path is 8 kilometers of historical tranquility, cutting through the lush and enchanting Kiso Valley. Magome: A Vibrant Start on the Slope The journey often begins at Magome-juku, a picturesque post town built entirely on a steep slope. Its main street is inclined and lined with reconstructed wooden houses with tiled roofs, small watermills, and shops selling traditional Japanese souvenirs and sweets like Gohei Mochi (grilled, skewered rice coated in a sweet glaze). The atmosphere here is lively, and the view from the town’s upper section overlooking the Kiso Valley is stunning. The Trail: Forests, Waterfalls, and Rural Calm Leaving Magome leads you deep into the dense forest. The path itself is mostly easy to walk—combining stretches of ancient stone pavement used by travelers centuries ago, soft dirt paths shaded by cedar and cypress trees, and sections passing through green bamboo groves. The hike is considered easy to moderate. It's recommended to start from Magome to Tsumago because most of the path is a gentle descent or flat after the initial climb over the mountain pass leaving Magome. Along the way, you'll encounter: Bear Bells: Large brass bells are hung beside the path, which hikers ring to deter local bears (although the chance of an encounter is low, it's a fun tradition). Rushing Waterfalls: Two small, beautiful waterfalls (Otaki and Metaki) provide a refreshing break. The Historic Teahouse: Near the halfway point, you’ll find Ichikokutochi Tateba Chaya. This traditional wooden hut is where local volunteers often greet passersby with free hot green tea and sweets. It’s a wonderful spot to rest, chat with other hikers, and feel the spirit of Japanese hospitality. The dominant sounds on the trail are the murmur of the river, the chirping of birds, and the clang of the bear bells echoing through the woods—a constant reminder that you are far from the urban noise of modern Japan. Tsumago: The Perfect, Most Preserved End Arriving at Tsumago-juku is the climax of the trip. This post town is considered the best-preserved along the Nakasendo. Here, authorities made a conscious decision to ban utility poles and modern advertising signs to preserve the town's appearance exactly as it was centuries ago. In Tsumago, the traditional buildings (including the Waki Honjin, the historic secondary inn) look as if time has stood still. Tsumago offers a quieter, more dignified atmosphere than Magome, making it a perfect end to a day rich in nature, history, and tranquility.

I have lived in Japan for 13 years and one of my favorite Japanese adventures to do with visitors is the Nakasendo trail from Magome to Tsumago. It is an easy 8 kilometer hike through the Japanese countryside that exposes the hiker to two super cute little post towns. Furthermore, the area is filled with a number of truly fabulous ryokans. Now, I normally do this hike during the summer months, but I recently revisited the area in March and to my surprise, the trail was filled with snow which made the process slightly more challenging but also added to the beauty.

If you take the 2.2km trail you will reach what might be the most beautiful village in the world. The old style vibes are impeccable and the place feels like a Feng Sui garden. One minus is that it is super touristy which detracts a bit from the beauty but still 100% worth visiting. Total time is about 1.5 hours.

Loved walking this stretch of trail! Such a beautiful area to explore with wildflowers and beautiful forest throughout the trek. Very beautiful villages to explore on the route as well. The path is really mild throughout and is should be relatively easy for most level of hikers. The trail is very well maintained and we surprisingly saw very few people on the trek. Lovely area of Japan to spend some time in nature.

Toson Memorial Museum, located in the former main inn of Magome and birthplace of the renowned author Toson Shimazako, is a simple yet valuable site to explore. The building itself was rebuilt after the main house was destroyed in the Great Fire of the Meiji era, but some of the original structures that survived the fire, such as the storehouse and retirement home, remain. You can really feel the weight of history here. The exhibits are divided into three main areas (buildings), and we toured them in order. First, we watched a 20-minute video in the first building. Mount Ena / Ena-san on 30th October - 2191m at the summit with 1241m climbing and 4 1/2 hours hiking the 11.2km or so along the trail. This was completed with a very full and heavy 75 litre backpack. I started at the Hirogawara trailhead car park to the East of the summit. After crossing the river there is 1 very obvious trail to the top. There are a few places that need a little care but I saw 1 child around 10 years old and people 60 + years old. It's achievable for everyone in good health and with sturdy hiking shoes. It's a mixture of mud and rock on most of the trail. The viewpoints are limited by the thick forest. The road to the car park has frequent landslides with large rocks around the road. At 6am on a Sunday the car park was also very full. Parking is free but get there early. Toilets located in the car park, 1 male and 1 female. The route also has no shelters etc. Ena-san is a good hike and definitely worth a visit. So far no ice or snow so it's very accessible.

On the foggy day, I climbed from the Kamisaka Pass side to Obanyama, and on the sunny day, I climbed from the Hirokawara side to the summit. The ease of climbing varies depending on whether or not there is kumazasa, and when I climbed, the kumazasa was not cut on the Kamisaka Pass side, but it was cut on the Hirokawara side. Even with that in mind, the trail on the Hirokawara side was relatively wide and the gradient was just right, so it was very easy to climb. On the Kamisaka Pass side, you have to go over two peaks, Senryoyama and Obanyama, so the climb back down is tough. The view from the summit is as bad as the reputation suggests, but the scenery on the way was good, albeit partially, on both sides. It's better not to climb after rain, as it gets very muddy. After walking on the pavement for about 25 minutes, you will reach the Hirogawara trailhead, and there is a place where there is a landslide, so please be careful. . Enter the trailhead on the left towards the Hontani River and cross a simple bridge. From here, it's about a 30 minute steep climb up the mountain. Once you reach the ridge, you will have to climb a rather steep 30 minutes. Once you reach the top of the ridge, it's a light climb for about 30 minutes. From here, there are many bamboo grasses on the ridgeline, and it takes about 30 minutes to climb while enjoying the view of the Southern Alps. Along the way, there are places where you can see Mt. Ontake and Mt. Norikura. This route has the best view, so enjoy your climb. Once you reach the top of the ridge, you will have to climb again through the forest zone for about 30 minutes. It takes about 2 and a half hours from the trailhead, and the summit plaza is 2190m. . As rumored, it is surrounded by trees, and although there is an observation tower, there is almost no view. After walking for about 10 minutes, you will come to the evacuation hut. There are toilets and a plaza, so it's a good place to have lunch. There is a rocky area above the hut, and you can see a little of the Southern Alps. If you go a little north from here, you will find the highest point of Mt. Ena, 2191m, but there was only a small sign on the tree. It feels more like walking on a low mountain with the forested area and many insects, but the course is fun to climb. (Translated by Google) It is one of the 100 famous mountains in Japan, straddling Gifu and Nagano prefectures. It has an elevation of 2,191m, and there are several climbing routes on both the Nagano and Gifu sides. This time, we climbed from the Maemiya trailhead on the Gifu side. The trailhead is right next to Ena Shrine. The shrine parking lot can accommodate over 10 cars. Compared to other routes, this route takes longer, in units of an hour. The route is quite extreme, with 90% climbing and 10% descending. As a result, it feels like you are climbing in a straight line. So when descending, it's a route where you just keep descending. If you attack at an average pace, including breaks, it will take about 5 hours and 30 minutes to climb and 3 hours and 30 minutes to descend. The footing is fairly stable and the path is easy to follow, so it's unlikely that you'll get lost, but there are few signboards along the way, so caution is required. There are two river crossings, and if you go straight in without crossing the second one, you will be off the route, so be especially careful. There are almost no views along the way, including to the summit, so I don't recommend this route for those who value the scenery. However, I would like to add that the view along the way is good if you take the Kamisaka Pass route on the Nagano side. I recommend this route for those who want to climb one of the 100 famous mountains in Japan or enjoy seasonal flowers. By the way, Mt. Ena has also been selected as one of the new 100 famous flowers. There is an observation deck at the summit, but the tall coniferous trees tower over you and you can hardly see the view. There are also mountain huts and toilets, which is a nice feature. Mt. Ena is said to have been climbed by British missionary Walter Weston, who spread the name to the world. On the way to the Maemiya trailhead (a little before), there is a memorial park and a bronze statue of him. I have included Ena Shrine, which is next to the trailhead, at the end of the image for your reference. *The rating is merely an overall rating of Mt. Ena from the Maemiya trailhead route. Nestled in the heart of Nakatsugawa, the Nakasendo Highway Historical Museum is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts and curious travelers alike. This charming museum showcases an array of artifacts that reflect Nakatsugawa's rich heritage, including valuable documents preserved from its past. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture while exploring exhibits featuring traditional ukiyo-e prints and detailed paper crafts related to historical trains.
Amazingly helpful man at this museum sold me prints and gave maps. It is a beautiful area.

The sea cucumber wall was also rare and very beautiful. The reason I stopped by the Nakasendo History Museum was because I wanted to see the (travel diary and view of old maps) exhibit. I wanted to take a more leisurely look at it, but unfortunately I couldn't take pictures inside. There were many documents with old written characters on display, so it was difficult to understand without detailed explanations. It was very nice to see an explanation of Kiso Itsuki near the entrance, and to see the real thing. However, I thought that parents and children could learn about Kiso Itsuki if there were explanations written on panels! Parking is at the back of the building. I stopped by on a weekday morning and it was pretty empty. The surrounding Shoya Ruins and Waki Honjin have a bigger impact than the facility itself. The "Historical Museum" is now located in a building across from Honjin, in the parking lot. I wasn't expecting much, but there were so many exhibits, from the Nakatsugawa Conference and Princess Kazunomiya's marriage to the Sekihōtai (Red Army Corps), that I realized I'd never be able to see everything properly in the hour or so I'd planned. I ended up buying the first five issues of "The History and Culture of the Highway," a pamphlet compiled by an organization called the "Nakasendo Historical Materials Research Association," which was on sale at the ticket counter. I plan to read it this winter. Given the changing times and the increasing number of foreign tourists, "the museum is probably thinking about changing the content of the exhibits" (according to a senior museum staff member), but I hope they don't forget the expectations of history buffs. While you can't get too close to the falls themselves, the surrounding area offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor fun. Guest house
Magome Chaya is a traditional 18th-century inn located in the heart of historic Magome. The accommodation offers minimalist rooms, a restaurant, a lounge, and a guest kitchen. Guests have praised the helpfulness of the staff and their assistance with travel arrangements. Despite the basic historical rooms, visitors found them cozy and very clean. The meals served at Magome Chaya are highly regarded for being simple yet very tasty, providing pure satisfaction to guests.
Lovely stay in the guesthouse. We were lucky to be able to snag a 6-tatami room for high season (Oct) considerably last-min. Booked thru their website online booking in June. Room was cosy and comfortable. As it was already Oct, we could sleep very comfortably at night without A/C. Service was good and friendly. English-speaking. Also could accommodate to my request for vegetarian meals for 1 pax. Meals were absolutely delicious!

Stayed here for 2 nights to do the basic Nakasendo way from Magome to Tsumago. Well preserved old house located right in the middle of Magomejuku. Shoutout to Jeng and Maria for their superb customer service. Food was authentic Japanese fare. You can grab water and beer from their fridge and drop your payment in the box (honesty system). It was summer when we visited, around August, the AC in the room was a lifesaver. The only thing I didnt like was the common toilet. If you're uncomfortable doing your #2 in a public toilet like me then it is a bit of a challenge. I even had to go to the public toilet located in the tourism office early in the morning just to get my privacy. I'd suggest they build a couple of private toilets for those who are uncomfortable in a shared toilet. Oh btw, its a bit of an uphill walk from the bus stop. Small lauggage is recommended. Other than that I'd recommend it.

ACOID THIS PLACE. We got a 6 tatami room for ¥11,000. Room was clean. Dinner was priced at a ridiculous ¥36,000! We can get the same kind of food at the restaurant down the hill for ¥1,800. When arriving no one to greet us but a note when pressing the bell sometimes there is someone coming, sometimes no one. You can go to a few other restaurants that serve dinner for a better price. 2nd floor is cramp with as many rooms as they can to maximise profit. Walls are thin, paper thin literally cause they are made of paper or card board and you can hear guests next door talking and slamming door of their room or the toilet. Water on tap running. We were unlucky and had a group of 6-7 Malaysian aunties talking loud to each other cross a few rooms. Noise started as soon as sun rise at 6:20am. Guess walking stumping. Checking out is also pretty much DIY and self serving as checking. Been to similar places and many ryokan. Beside the building front facade and room looks Japanese and there is not much authenticity about it. Water pressure in the common bath and all basin is low, very low. No hot water coming on all basins. Heated toilet seat was off. Again to maximise profit. This is pretty much a backpacker dormitory low budget hotel that charges a lot. That’s all. Thank God it was only one night.

4.5 — Magome Chaya is in an excellent location right smack in the middle of the charming town of Magome. We stayed in a private room, but the toilet is shared and the shower area is not private. The service is excellent and the food is plenty. I’m rating it as 4.5 just because there were no toiletries provided, which becomes a challenge given there are no convenience stores around in this rural area. But other than that, our stay was good.

We had an overnight stay with two people. The stay was perfect from the initial welcome to checkout. The house is beautiful, the food was impressive and very tasty. We were wonderfully looked after and nothing was missing. The beds were also comfortable and the dormitory was quiet and well separated. I have nothing negative to report. Thank you for taking such good care of us. We'll be back anytime!
Maik B — Google review
Really enjoyed our stay in this guesthouse, mostly thanks to the amazing dinner! Magome was a great stop partway through our Nakasendo hike and we felt lucky to get the last space available for the night we needed. We stayed in the large dorm which meant you could definitely hear other people getting ready for bed/snoring(!) but you had a curtained off private area so that wasn’t an issue. The bed was okay, but the pillow quite hard! Definitely book in for the dinner. Breakfast was served too early for us (7.30-8 I think?)
Emma ( — Google review
The guesthouse exceed my expectation. Clean, modern, new and friendly host. I stayed at dorm. The design is good where curtain will seperate 2 bunk bed with the rest. I was lucky that the rest of the dorm mate were quiet so we have a peaceful night sleep. You will have some private space in front of the bed. I didn't take full dinner but the grilled fish is fresh.

experience was good, especially from the perspective of staying in a traditional place along the Nakasendo. However, I was a little concerned about the cleanliness of the futons and bedsheets — they didn’t feel completely clean, and the shared bathroom also didn’t give the best impression in terms of hygiene. Even so, the experience itself is something worth trying at least once, and for that reason I’d still say it deserves 4 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The part that left me with a slightly bitter aftertaste was the food. In my opinion, it was quite expensive for what was served, and that would be the main reason I wouldn’t return. I’m attaching some photos so you can get a realistic idea — nothing hidden, just an honest view.

Yakitori restaurant
Toriyasu, an exceptional restaurant I had the pleasure of visiting in Japan, left me speechless with its fantastic cuisine and impeccable service. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone fortunate enough to be in the vicinity. The delectable dishes, such as chicken meatballs nestled inside peppers and sumptuous tempura, were complemented perfectly by their delightful sauce. The staff members were all incredibly warm and amicable.
Luckily we have reserved a table before our visit since it was a full house even on a weekday. We enjoyed our dinner there so much, not only because of the food quality but also the thoughtful service by all the waitresses in the store. Good foods, nice service and great vibe. For sure they serve tourists as they got an English menu but strongly recommend a reservation in advance to avoid any disappointment.

Juri is a charming restaurant located along the Nakasendo trail, offering a delightful dining experience for visitors. The menu features sticky chestnut rice and soba, with cold soba being a popular choice, especially in warm weather. Guests can enjoy an array of side dishes at reasonable prices while appreciating the attentive service from the busy yet friendly staff. English menus are available for added convenience. Additionally, patrons can indulge in sit-down ice cream and receive complimentary treats as a gesture of hospitality.
Nice little restaurant on the Nakasendo trail, we stopped by for lunch as we skipped all the restaurants in Magomejuku due to the crowds of tourists. This place mainly has sticky chestnut rice and soba, and we each got a serving of cold soba which was perfect for the hot and sunny weather. Plenty of side dishes and for a reasonable price. The staff was quite busy but still provides good service, English menus were available and a big help. They also served soft serve and there is a vending machine outside the place to buy a drink to bring with you on you’re hike. Not the best place but nothing to complain about, we enjoyed our lunch break here very much :))

They have english versions of their menu! This restaurant sells a local specialty that consists of chestnuts and rice. Got the chestnut rice teishouku (set meal) with cold soba noodles, perfect for the summer weather and a good lunch pitstop along the nakasendo trail! If you sit at the area near the window, you'll have to remove your shoes, but the view is nice and you'll see trekkers of the nakasendo trail passing by.

Stopped by to have lunch and never regret that I did. This is the last restaurant that is situated in the Magome Nakasendo trail before a long way to Tsumago. Food is very nice, serving local delicacies! Opened earlier (10.00am) than other restaurants (11.30am), which also good if you want to have brunch. English menu is available too

Excellent place to stop over and get some energy for the hike between the trading towns. The owners are very friendly and the food was amazing. I ordered tempura soba. The broth was very flavorful and the tempura was served with salt to dip in. All of it tasted really delicious and fresh. The restaurant interior is also very beautiful made from light colored wood. I would recommend to go here, especially as the prices are reasonable for this area

A quaint and beautiful cafe with a gem of a proprietress who welcomed us with amazing hospitality and attentive service. The food was amazing - we had the mountain vegetables soba and it was fresh and elegantly seasoned. We loved every bite! The hot sake on a cold day can't be beat!

Serving the local delicacy of chestnut and glutinous rice together with a range of vegetable tempura which is so refreshing. Didn’t have many meat option. Saw a horse sashimi on the menu. They have English language menus for easy reference. Good strategic location just on the outskirts of Magome towards Tsumago.
