Historical landmark
Magomejuku is a charming stop on an ancient mail route, featuring centuries-old water mills and traditional noodle shops. The family-run atmosphere adds to its rustic appeal, although service may be affected by the presence of busy children. Meal times are early and prompt, with meals laid out for self-service. However, the locally influenced food is delightful.
Once upon a time, when the common Japanese had to travel, he/she traveled on foot. As a result, there were many small hamlets along the major routes called "shukubamachi" (宿場町, literally "inn location town"). Magome-juku was one such place along the Kisoji (木曽路 Kiso road which is a part of the longer Nakasendo (中山道)) where many of the original buildings have been maintained, and many of those are still in use as inns, gift shops, etc. This is one of four "shukubamachi" along the Kiso Kaido that has been designated a Nationally Designated Architectural Preservation Site where the buildings are being preserved. What makes Magome-juku different from most other "shukubamachi" is its location on a mountain slope. Most others are located in a valley, near a waterway. This makes Magome-juku unique and provides some fantastic vistas. I first visited this site about 20 years ago. At that time, not even many Japanese knew of it, so it was very quiet throughout the day. However, with the coming of the Internet came tourists from everywhere. This is not necessarily a bad thing, of course, because it provides the town with the income to maintain itself. However, I did find it slightly disappointing. So, for the best experience, I suggest you visit at the earliest possible hour and enjoy the serenity that this place provides.

Explore Historic Towns, Walk among traditional wooden houses, teahouses and shops in Magome and Tsumago. Savor Nature, Experience the beauty of the Japanese countryside as you hike through woodlands, bamboo groves and rice paddies. Walk the Historic Trails, take a trip back in time by walking along stone-paved paths from the Edo period that are still in use today. It is about a 10 km hike, a medium difficulty trail. Don't forget to ring the bells to keep the bears away during the hike ☺️

Little village with historical scenery and beautiful historical feeling. There is a hiking 🥾 path from Magome to Tsumago (8 km), which was wonderful experience.

Famous post town along the Nakasendo road. ℹ️ Great information center with friendly staff and brochures. Get a stamp for your souvenir book, too! 🥟 Great food stalls, including regional specialties. 🌰 Chestnuts are huge in this area, so try the chestnut soft serve. Also try the stuffed buns (called Oyaki) that are a specialty. 🛍️ Lots of souvenir shopping. Magome-juku is different from some other postal towns (like Nakatsugawa) in that it's purely running on tourism. So, great place for souvenirs (go somewhere else if you want to see locals!) 🚍 You can take a bus from Nakatsugawa, stop is at the train station . 🚶‍♀️If you want a really fun adventure, walk from Nakatsugawa! (And put your bag in a coin locker at the station) It's about 2 hours along the Nakasendo, is well signposted. 🚻 Many well-marked, clean toilets 🥾 If you're hiking the Nakasendo, I can't recommend it enough! Although the Magome to Tsumago portion is the famous part, there's so much more to it! ❗ I've created a public list for recommended Nakasendo spots, check it out.
Stacey T — Google review
Although not as large scale as Narai-juku, Magome-juku feels more picturesque with its gently sloping cobblestone street, functioning water mills, and beautiful mountain range as the backdrop. It is a popular point along the Nakasendo Trail that connects to Tsumago-juku. There are several free resting spots along the street, with souvenir shops and restaurants throughout. We tried the Hida beef croquette and bun, both were delicious. The chestnut ice cream was also a pleasant treat. We parked at a free parking lot near two large souvenir stores, which was a convenient starting point for exploring the area.

This is a great place to visit. There's a brilliant hike of 8km to Tsumago, but beware! The last bus back leaves at 16.40. Magome has lots of charming houses, restaurants and shops, but be careful as they all close at 17.00. There is nothing open after that!
J S — Google review
Beautiful place, make sure you reach there early. We got there by 6 pm and it was dark and only one restaurant open.
Abigail G — Google review
Beautiful starting point for tourists to walk a lovely part of the Nakasendo trail to Tsumago-juku. In case you don't want to walk about 3 hours the town itself is really worth to visit. Nice architecture and old authentic buildings all over the place. You can also shop and dine here.

Tsumago-juku is a well-preserved historic post town that once served as a vital stop along the Nakasendo Road, a 500km trade route connecting Kyoto and Edo (now Tokyo). This charming town features restored 18th-century homes, a 12th-century shrine, a 16th-century temple, and a museum. The townscape has been designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
I started walking from Nagiso station and most of the trail is uphill. Walking through small village, road, a bit of forest. Weather was really nice around 20-23 degree with bright sunny. It was really fun trek.

A very beautiful village where history and nature come together. A nice experience, but unfortunately, as a tourist you mostly need cash, cards are not accepted in many shops.
Michal V — Google review
Loved the walk from Magome to Tsumago - the first 3km are straight up, around 10 to 12%…then you descend along streams and rivers. Very beautiful and highly recommended. It’s 8km however there is an optional extension to the waterfalls which is 3.5km one way…so you could get 15km of hiking if you wished.

The End of the Road: Nostalgic Quiet in Tsumago-juku The arrival at Tsumago-juku was the highlight of completing the charming hike from Magome. After hours of walking the ancient forest paths of the Nakasendo, the main restored street, with its traditional wooden houses, offered a welcome and peaceful respite. However, as the day drew to a close, it seemed the ancient village entered a state of slumber. The quiet was absolute, yet the options were limited: most shops and galleries that operate during the day had closed their doors, with only a few lights shining behind the madobe (windows). For the weary travelers, the challenge shifted from walking to logistics: finding a hot meal before the return bus arrived. With a very limited service menu, only a small variety of places remained open—perhaps a humble Ocha-ya (teahouse) serving a final bowl of noodles, or a small shop selling the sweet and satisfying local delicacy, Gohei Mochi. These are precisely the moments when one experiences Tsumago-juku most authentically: not as a tourist destination, but as a quiet, tranquil village. The wait for the bus, facing the ancient wooden houses under the shifting evening sky, becomes a moment of reflection and serenity, where the taste of hot Miso and the murmur of the nearby river mark the successful end of the historical adventure.

A trip to remember. We took the roughly 4h30min long Nakasendo Trail from Nakatsugawa to Tsumago-juku and it left us speachless. The Ochiai cobblestone path felt like magic out of a Ghibli movie and the well preserved edo houses of Magome & Tsumago led the way into a journey theough time. We‘ve stayed at the Masushiroya Ryokan and had a fantastic time and food there. The nightime lantern walk was my personal favorite! #TrustmeIamGerman

We wish we had spent more time there! Beautiful and has a very helpful tourism office. (They even helped us find vegan-friendly accommodations.) Delightful coffee shop that sells local art. A great town for nature and buying souvenirs that are NOT made in China.

Nestled about 250km south of Tokyo, hidden in the Nagiso mountain ranges lays the historic village of Tsumago-juku, with records dating back to 1640, it is said this village is much older, it is a preserved historic site and a total charm and honor to walk these streets.

Tsumago-juku turned out to be our preferred choice for a return visit to soak in the rustic charm of the quintessential Edo-era postal town. My party started our hike from Nagiso station down south to Mogame-juku via Tsumago-juku. The hike was an easy one and we enjoyed the lush forest and scenery along the way. We self-drove and stayed at the Library at Iida, an AirBnB located about 40 minutes away at the town of Iida. Highly recommended.

Chicory Village is a popular spot known for its traditional sweets and farm-to-table foods. Visitors can learn to make the traditional sweet, although some find the flavor too subtle. The lunch buffet is a major draw, with online reservations recommended due to its popularity. The buffet offers a variety of healthy and tasty options, including tempura and an impressive salad bar. Overall, Chicory Village is worth visiting for those seeking fresh and delicious food with a chicory theme.

(Translated by Google) I went there and bought some! The "Kurikinton Fresh Bread" I bought at a kiosk a few days ago was pretty good. I had been planning a trip to Ena and had always wanted to visit Chikori Village. These two ideas combined, so I decided to visit for the first time. [Exterior/Interior, etc.] - A factory-attached store. Plenty of parking. - Inside is a souvenir shop and buffet restaurant. - They were just serving freshly baked "Kurikinton Fresh Bread," and there was a line. It's a very popular shop. [Purchase] - Boxed Kurikinton Fresh Bread, ¥2,100 [Review] - Freshly baked bread is best if you're eating it right away. Apparently, the boxed (oxygen-free packaging) is recommended for takeaway. I chose the boxed version. -When I got home, I ate the bread right after opening it, and it was fluffy and moist with the hot water, and the flavor of the chestnut paste and butter was delicious.

(Translated by Google) This was my second time. I arrived around 11:30, but the closest parking lot was full, so I parked in Parking Lot 3. I reserved my spot online for the Barber's Dining lunch buffet (2,200 yen), and even though it was full, I was able to wait about 15 minutes before being seated. I was so excited by the sheer number of dishes and sweets on offer that it was hard to choose. Everything was delicious, but the chicory gratin in particular had a texture unlike anything I'd ever had before, making it the best. I wasn't able to try all the flavors, so I'd like to come again. The staff were also polite and pleasant. Takeaway is lined up in the morning, so you can buy it. You have to line up for freshly baked bread. It's on the right side as you enter. The line for breakfast is on the left. They also have premium nama bread. If you want that, get a numbered ticket. It's quite a long line. Be prepared and go first thing in the morning. The first one is baked from 9:40. The premium one is baked at 10:00. Nestled atop a bluff overlooking the Kiso River, the Naegi Castle Ruins, also known as Misty Castle, are a captivating glimpse into Japan's storied past. Constructed in 1532 by Toyama Naokado of the Toyama clan, this historic site was strategically positioned to allow ancient warriors to keep watch over both land and water routes.
The remains of a castle. You can see some of the old stones and ruins of it. View is pretty good at the top. Toilet is well-maintained and very clean. We walked from Nakatsugawa to the castle. Took about 1.5hrs with some photo-taking along the way. You can do that or take a bus to Naegi and walk 1km+ there.

Excellent historic landmark worth the hike or bus ride from Nakatsugawa. Great views of the surrounding countryside with interesting information regarding the period and development of the castle. We arrived late morning on a Saturday during Summer and it wasn’t very busy. Public amenities are available and clean

It's about an hour's walk from Nakatsugawa Railway Station. From the station head north and take the road bridge across the Kiso River. Then immediately turn sharp left and walk down the footpath to the quiet minor road and follow it west along the north bank of the river. After a few hundred metres and a sharp left bend you'll see a sign in English for Naegi Castle Ruins. Hike for about 20 mins up to the ruins.

Not much of a castle is left, but the view is beautiful and it’s fun to imagine the castle that was once there. 1/24/2024 update It snowed so I decided to check out the view from the castle after work and it was GORGEOUS. After admiring the view and playing in the snow, I got a hot drink from the vending machine in the parking lot and warmed up my freezing hands 😁

A fantastic site for a castle. Panoramic views over the valley in which Nakatsugawa lies, views over the Kiso and Agi rivers. So an important landmark for the local Lord to control. The castle and surrounding buildings are gone. We can create and build beauty on our rich world. Then time, ignorance, anger and sometimes greed wears them down. The walk up from the Kiso river is worthwhile. It's not listed on Google maps. However it offers a winding trek to the north gate.

Been here twice now, we walked from Nakatsugawa Station - a fair walk but pretty beautiful... walked along the river to a path up the back of the mountain, a fair climb up but great exercise :) the place itself has GORGEOUS views towards Nakatsugawa and the surrounding peaks. I'm sure there are bus services to the peak if you're not up for the walk and climb, either way i love this lookout!

Ruin on top of a mountain. Only the foundations remain. There is a viewing platform on top from where the surrounding mountain range can be seen. The hike up the mountain is steep and it takes around 40 minutes to get there from the Nakatsugawa station in a fast pace. There are multiple signs explaining which parts of the castle were formerly here, however they are only in Japanese but QR Codes to an English explanation is provided.

(Translated by Google) I went for the breakfast menu, which is only available on weekends and holidays. I usually can't come here because of work, so I took a day off just for this! I wish they'd open on weekdays too! You can choose rice or bread for 600 yen (750 yen for rice with salmon). The rice is all-you-can-eat, and you can choose one bread from the bakery section for under 230 yen. The salad bar, drinks, miso soup, soup, and stir-fried vegetables are all-you-can-eat! You're limited to one boiled egg per person. Wow, this is a bargain. It's so popular, it's no wonder it gets so crowded. The salad bar has a wide selection of sprouts. I used to dislike pea sprouts, but thanks to this place, I can now eat them. I also tried the chikori, which was slightly bitter and seemed healthy. The lunch buffet I saw as I was leaving looked really delicious, so I decided to go back for lunch later. It's around 2000 yen until August, and a little more expensive from September to December. Is it because it's chestnut season? It was very crowded, even though it was a weekday. I'm not sure if it was because of summer vacation or just normal, but it might be a good idea to make a reservation. And because it was so busy, there was a one-hour limit. The seats were cramped for two people. Huh? An hour for lunch? I wish I could have eaten more slowly, but it was cheap, so I won't complain (or at least I'm complaining). Okay, I have to hurry and get it! I went to check out the food, and there were a lot of vegetable-based dishes! There were so many varieties, and I wanted to try them all, so I tried a little bit of each, even some vegetables I'm not a big fan of, but everything was delicious.♪ Wow, a cooking method like this! I'm thinking about trying it at home. I went four times, but I couldn't try all the varieties! What a shame! Even in an hour, it was quite a lot to eat. The watermelon was incredibly sweet and delicious. It's quite far from my house, so I can't go there often, but I'd like to go again on a drive. (Translated by Google) It's so popular that when I called to make a reservation a week in advance, I was told they were already full. I heard that online reservations through E-Park would open the same day from 9:00, so I prepared for the day. However, E-Park still wasn't working after 9:00, so I called. Apparently there was a system glitch, and they called me back and took another number. So, I was seated in order. However, the queue wasn't particularly smooth, and it took about 10 minutes to get a seat. The menu features a wide variety of vegetable-based side dishes, all of which looked delicious, making it hard to choose. Since so many customers enter the restaurant at the same time, it took a long time to get the side dishes. I think it would be smoother if they had a designated entrance for the side dishes. It took about 30 minutes for the side dish, rice dish, and drink corners to be fully lined up. Since the restaurant's name is Chikori Village, I decided to try some chikori. It was fresh, somewhere between Chinese cabbage and lettuce, and very delicious with no strong flavor. The other side dishes were also quite simple in flavor, which was nice. I ended up feeling more full than I expected, and unfortunately only managed to eat about 70% of what I had planned to eat... I wish there had been fewer people, which is a bit selfish of me. The service over the phone was great, so I'm giving it a higher star! Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
Masuya is a charming and authentic restaurant located in Magome, offering some of the best soba dishes in the area. The menu includes English descriptions and photos of the dishes, making it easier for international visitors to order. The owner, a friendly elderly lady, may not speak English fluently but provides excellent service with the help of an English menu and gestures. The atmosphere inside is calm and air-conditioned, providing a pleasant dining experience.
A lovely traditional-style restaurant. The soba noodles were delicious, and the home made plum juice is a must try. Very friendly service even though we mainly had to order by pointing!

Nice local handmade soba . We tried the vegetable soba , the chicken soba and the cold soba with yam . The Gohei mochi rice cake was different with the rice texture still evident but the seasoning was spot on . It’s one of the better ones I have eaten .

I visited this restaurant in the mid summer 2023. Atmosphere inside is calm and air conditioned. I ordered lunch menu which is cold Soba and Gohei mochi. Noddle stiffness is good and taste of soba soup is deep. Gohei mochi smells increase appetite, miso taste is elevated with sesame. Staff were kind and polite, it was really good break under strong sunshine.

Authentic and friendly and not touristy. I tried both the hot chicken soba and the cold one in Japanese yam. Both are excellent. Personally I prefer soba served in cold.

Stone Museum Hakusekikan is a delightful destination for families, especially those with young children. This engaging geology museum features an impressive array of stone sculptures and intricate carvings from various cultures around the globe. Visitors can explore a fascinating exhibit filled with crystals and stones, including a unique pyramid housing a piece from Egypt at its center.
I went just because I was passing by, and I was surprised! I paid ¥1,000 to enter, but you get a voucher to enter for free another day! Parking was free! There is an exhibit of crystals and stones from all over the world! There is a pyramid, with a "stone" from Egypt in the center of it! You can walk inside, it is small but interesting! Fun for kids, for sure!

I went with my 10yo and 8yo kids, and they were so excited to get so many beautiful gems! Staff people were all so kind as well. There are some covered lunch spaces outside, so you can bring in lunch to enjoy. We fully enjoyed the activities and the experiences!

Very cool trouist attraction, the kids can find nice stones in the water stone search. Cool maze under the Egyptian pyramid. Lots of other cool activities over in the big shed Highly recommended, return discounts available too.
Mr D — Google review
It looks like this site used to be, or perhaps still is a type of quarry, but cleverly re-purposed into a fun and interactive museum about stones, mining and geology. Kids and adults alike can try pansifting for gold, silver or gem stones, treasure hunting with metal detectors, and exploring the maze at the bottom of a large stone pyramid.
Adam P — Google review
It’s ok. Nothing special or super interesting to be honest. You’ll get some cool photos of the pyramid and there’s a maze inside that’ll keep kids busy for 15 mins. There’s also some fossilised dinosaur poo. You can pick out various kinds of gems/rocks/stones/minerals from sand and keep them. There is also a gallery there but not much on display we we went. And some old fashioned toilet seats.

Museums
The Hiroshige Museum of Art, Ena is a small museum housing an impressive collection of around 1,500 works by the renowned woodblock print artist, Hiroshige. Known for his graceful and stylized depictions of popular travel destinations in Japan, the museum offers visitors the opportunity to create their own traditional Japanese woodblock prints.
I visited the museum as part of my SDG project with NUCB. A beautiful, modern museum located in a quaint town that yearns to grow. We met with the museum’s director and had time to create our own wood block prints. I hope more people get to visit once the shinkansen station is built nearby!

Fantastic little museum where you can try printing ukiyo-e! There are two exhibition rooms, a video area (in English) and an area where you can try your hand at printing. The gift shop has a wide selection. With professional reproduction from the Adachi foundation being a highlight!

Absolutely fantastic little art gallery. I was so grateful that the wood block printing process was explained in English, too. I just wish the explanatory texts for each picture had been translated as well. The educational videos were also very informative. Even though I am a fully grown adult, I still enjoyed the opportunity to make my very own wood block print in the gallery and though it is far from perfect, I will take it home with me and treasure it.

Keiseian is a charming family-owned buckwheat soba restaurant located in the picturesque town of Magome-juku. The noodles are perfectly cooked, boasting a satisfying texture that pairs well with the flavorful dipping sauces and soups. While the restaurant does not offer an English menu, visitors appreciate the authentic atmosphere and friendly service provided by the owners.

Located at almost the end of the village. A short walk distance from a bus stop (not the main bus stop). A family type of buckwheat soba eating house, simple decoration but comfortable Japanese table. At the entrance, there is a grinding machine. English menu not available. The wild vegetables and mushrooms soba was hot and delicious.
Larry L — Google review
A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Keiseian and indulging in their delectable cold soba. I must say, the experience was nothing short of fantastic. From the quality of the food to the warm hospitality, this place truly made my day, especially during my visit to the charming town of Magome-juku. The cold soba I ordered was absolutely delightful. The noodles were perfectly cooked, firm yet tender, and had a satisfying texture. Each bite was accompanied by a refreshing burst of flavors that left me craving for more. What made the experience even better was the fact that they offered complimentary tea, and to my delight, they had sobacha, my personal favorite. The combination of the flavorful soba and the comforting sobacha tea made for an unforgettable meal. Aside from the culinary delights, Keiseian played a significant role in enhancing my overall experience of visiting Magome-juku. This beautiful town is known for its historical charm, and the restaurant perfectly complemented the ambiance with its traditional yet welcoming atmosphere. The attentive staff and their warm service added an extra layer of enjoyment to my visit. As a pleasant surprise, once I finished my soba, I was served soba-yu, a traditional Japanese drink made from the water used to boil the soba noodles. It was a unique experience for me, and I truly appreciated the opportunity to try something new and immerse myself in the local customs. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Keiseian for the fantastic food and the memorable experience they provided. If I have the chance to visit this beautiful town again in the future, I will undoubtedly make it a point to return to this remarkable establishment. I highly recommend Keiseian to anyone seeking a delightful culinary adventure and an authentic taste of Magome-juku.

The vegetable soba was rich with different kinds of mushrooms. The noodles are made from buckwheat. Some thought they were much better than any other noodles tasted in Japan, personally I found them unique but but not as tasteful. It is located on the corner of the intersection and has a parking lot that can accommodate 35 cars. I ordered a set of warm gomoku kishimen noodles, three pieces of sushi, and tsuke kishimen noodles and seven pieces of sushi. Even though it's a chain restaurant, the staff brought it to me instead of a serving robot. It even came with chawanmushi, so it was a great deal. In summer, visitors flock to this serene spot to escape the heat and enjoy refreshing dips in crystal-clear waters while soaking up the negative ions emitted by cascading falls.
In late December, the waterfalls here are nothing short of magical, with a light dusting of snow adding to their natural beauty. The scene is tranquil and awe-inspiring, as the frozen mist catches the light in a way that makes the landscape feel like a winter wonderland. The drive is easy and smooth with snow tires, making it accessible even in the colder months. After exploring the falls, treat yourself to a soothing soak at the local onsen—there's no better way to warm up and relax after a serene day in nature. A perfect winter escape!

A beautiful gorge tucked away in nature. The park takes about 45mins to 1hour to walk through. Take your time and don't rush. The views are great. Just be careful of your phones on the suspended bridges. Visited in March 2025. Water view looks great and clear.

One of the most beautiful waterfalls I've seen in Japan. The waters are crystal clear and at points, you can see the clear falls cascade down. Truly amazing. We went in on April 16, 2024. It was a cloudy day and I was scared the waters wouldnt be as blue but they were still blue and beautiful. The walkways and facilities are well maintained. Bathrooms are clean. The road to get here is a one lane road, drive slowly and carefully as there are no guardrails and you're sharing the road with oncoming traffic. This place is not busy at all, there were 2 other parties while we were here but we got to experience all the waterfalls by ourselves. There is a restaurant at the entrance which is good and worth visiting, even just taking a look. The collections of things throughout the years is fun to look at. Entry and parking are free.
Chloe — Google review
The falls are nice. However you can only get close access to Kannon Falls. Sentaru Falls path access was closed. I'm not sure if the entry is permanently closed or temporarily closed. After reading another review it looks like the path has been closed for a couple of years. It would be nice if the path was fixed. I couldn't find information on the entry. It is worth a visit, but just one larger fall has good access.

Great, easy hike. We went on the weekend and it was very crowded so I would recommend the weekday, if possible. Beautiful views!
Jim Z — Google review
There's two different sections to the waterfalls. Main area you walk down stairs to see the Tsukechi falls but you can also walk up away from carpark and there are streams that lead to a waterfall dam structure. 1 hour gives you time to see both. Carpark is free. The fruit ice cream is sensational. It's worth doing this fall in conjunction Ryujin Falls on the same day.

Kashimo Meijiza Theater, established in 1894 by dedicated local volunteers, stands as a testament to the rich tradition of Ji-Kabuki, an amateur kabuki performance style that thrived during its inception. The theater's construction was no small feat; it took nearly two months and the collective effort of around 100 locals to remove a massive tree from the site.
(Translated by Google) This is a kabuki hut for Jikabuki. It is still in use today, and is used for Ji-Kabuki performances and concerts, and has even been used to celebrate the succession of famous Kabuki actors. Although it's a little difficult to find from the national highway, parking is free and there's no entrance fee, but the guide was very thorough in explaining the place, and I'm very grateful. Not only could I fully enjoy the atmosphere of an old-fashioned Kabuki hut, but I was also able to walk along the flower path and be shown around the stage equipment and dressing rooms, including the soft-shelled turtle and Naraku, which was a valuable experience. I think it's a really wonderful facility. The guide takes a little time, and since you are the only one, you may have to wait. However, you can still have a wonderful experience, so please take some time to stop by and check it out. (Translated by Google) It's in the countryside...it's quite a journey from nearby Nakatsugawa City. But it's worth the trip! You'll generally need to travel by car. The exhibits are easy to navigate and well worth seeing. You can learn about everything from individual minerals to their industrial uses. You'll probably have a chance to talk to the curators when they're there. However, some knowledge is recommended for a more enjoyable experience. If you're simply looking to see beautiful stones and gems, it may be a disappointment. We did the crystal hunting attraction in the scorching August sun...but we only lasted 30 minutes. The volunteers were very considerate...I think they were worried about heatstroke. While it depends on the season and weather, it's a fun experience. Beautiful crystals can be found in the gravel brought from the local quarry. This time, we found small pieces that appeared to be quartz and beryl. Unfortunately...the ones you find are extremely small. And you're only allowed to take one home per person. The souvenir section is tiny, about the size of a cart. After all, it's a museum...an academic institution. Bringing drinks and a packed lunch is recommended. After paying the admission fee, you can go crystal hunting, and although they are very small, you can still find natural crystals. Admission is free for junior high school students and younger, and it's 330 yen for adults. My child loved the crystal hunt and the exhibits inside the museum so much that he wanted to go back, so we purchased an annual pass. It was 1,650 yen for five visits. We went about once every three days during the summer vacation, and it was well worth it, lol. The photo shows the crystals we found with my child. You can also find smoky quartz. Each person is allowed to take home one, so my child always takes home the one he likes best. Drove to Ryujin Falls from Takayama for 2 hours. Beautiful falls with the wooden path. However, parking is a bit steep at Y1000 with Y400 donation per person to visit the fall. In addition to the cost for car rental, fuel and highway toll. Not worth it to visit with the costs added up. I would visit again if there is a bus tour from Nagoya or Gero Onsen.

My favorite waterfall. It's easy to get to by bus, you don't have to hike up the mountain. It's got an iconic red bridge and a small shrine. You can swim, camp or fish along the river. There are bathrooms. If you do want to hike, you can contiune - but it is a paved road, not a trail, and this right near the entrance is the prettiest.

Beautiful place, if you have the time to do the hike( a bit hard if you are not in good shape or have some injuries) it worth it, doesn’t take much time to the 5th waterfall, it took me around 1.5hrs going slowly. Just need to take care as the bridges are not in good conditions.

Sights & Landmarks
Momosuke Bridge is a large wooden suspension bridge with a nostalgic feel, built in 1922 and considered one of the oldest of its kind in Japan. It holds historical significance as it was constructed by Mr. Momosuke Fukuzawa, known as 'The King of Electrical Power' for introducing hydroelectric power to the country. The bridge is located near a train station and offers picturesque views and photo opportunities.
Stayed at a nearby apartment after our Nakasendo hike to be near Nagiso station. The beautiful white rocks and blooming cherry blossoms and azaleas helped create a spectacular view.

Large wooden suspension bridge with a nice nostalgic feel. Near the bridge is a sculpture of the grieving woman sitting on the rock with her chin in her hands set up in 1960 to commemorate the victims of a debris flow that occurred on July 20 1953. The monument clearly depicted the tragedy of the incident.

Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
Located on GoogleMaps, 芝ヵ瀬食堂 is a highly sought-after establishment known for its exceptional adhesive quality. Customers flock to this popular eatery, arriving well in advance of their opening hours. The menu boasts a variety of delectable options such as boiled cutlet and miso cutlet, all paired with just the right amount of rice to satiate one's appetite.

(Translated by Google) I was going to be nearby and was googling restaurants in the area when I found [Shibakase Shokudo]. I was super curious, so I used my navigation system to find it. Arrived... What?! To be honest, if I hadn't known, I wouldn't even know it was open, as it has such a retro look. I was a little nervous when I entered. In the kitchen, an older man was cooking silently and efficiently, with an older woman supporting him. Another energetic and cheerful older woman was running the dining area by herself. I was aiming for the (Motsuni) but unfortunately it was sold out, so I had the (Dote Donburi). The softly stewed dote rice was a perfect match. My partner ordered the pork soup set meal plus a single order of fried chicken. The pork soup was packed with ingredients, and the amount of ingredients just kept coming out (lol), and I was surprised at the mountain of fried chicken. Even though it was almost the end of lunch hours, customers kept coming in, and by 2pm when it closed, the restaurant was full. I was energized by the sight of the older man and woman managing such a large number of customers. They opened early, around 10:50. Maybe that's because there was a long line. [Parking] There's plenty of parking in the gravel area in front of the restaurant. It might be difficult to find a spot if there's a line. [How to Order] Order verbally. The staff seem to ask in the order you enter, so look at the menu and wait. [Items] I ordered fried shrimp and a dote-don. There are so many fried foods on the menu, it's hard to decide. I'll have to visit a few times to try them all. The dote-don is a staple at this restaurant, and many people order it. The deep miso flavor makes you want to eat it all in one go. You can't go wrong ordering it. The portion of fried shrimp is also generous, so it's very satisfying. [Other Information] By the time I left, the parking lot was full, and it was a popular restaurant with long lines. For lunch, I decided to go here. It was tender tendon meat simmered in miso. This is it! The price was a bargain at just 600 yen. I'd heard it was busy, but it was packed, and I was shown to a seat shortly after. Their dotemeshi, curry, and motsuni set meals seem to be quick menu items, so they're ready in no time. It was a diner brimming with Showa-era charm that exceeded my expectations. 🎵 I really wanted both dotemeshi and chicken cutlet, so I requested that they change the rice in my chicken cutlet set meal to dotemeshi, and they happily accommodated for a small increase in price. The change was a great decision!❗️ The chicken cutlet was tender and juicy. 😋 The dotemeshi looked strong, but the mild flavor was delicious. 😋 Even though I was at work, I was completely satisfied and full. I went in as soon as they opened, but they filled up soon after. Early on a weekday is a good time to visit. The restaurant has the appearance of an old-fashioned set meal restaurant. The quick-cooking menu items come out quickly, which is very helpful for people in a hurry who can't afford any time. Fried foods seem to come out after you've finished eating the quick-cooking menu items, so be careful what you order if you're visiting with a group. The restaurant only has a fan and doesn't appear to have air conditioning. I came on a hot day and got drenched in sweat. The windows are wide open, so bugs are flying around. Nakasendo Nakatsugawa-juku is a post town with a unique atmosphere, surrounded by picturesque fields and mountains. The townscape features modern inns, craft stores, sake breweries, Japanese sweets shops, and cafes. It was once the most prosperous town in the area and still retains several buildings of wealthy merchants. The Nakasendo Historical Museum is highly recommended for visitors.

(Translated by Google) An Early Morning Stroll in Nakatsugawa-juku, a Post Town Before Wake I arrived in Nakatsugawa-juku as the sky was just beginning to lighten. The shop curtains were still closed, and the streets were deserted. Yet, it was this silence that seemed to reflect the town's true essence. Counting from the Edo period, this post town was the 45th. It once flourished as the leading commercial district in eastern Mino, lined with honjin (main inns), wakihonjin (secondary inns), and inns, welcoming travelers and feudal lords alike. Walking the streets, vestiges of the past peek through the udatsu-style townhouses, square-shaped roads curving at right angles, and lattice-framed sake breweries. Long-established chestnut confectionery shops line the streets, and in the quiet before opening, one can faintly hear the hum of history. During the late Edo period, figures like Kogoro Katsura and Hirobumi Ito hid here, and records of secret meetings within the Choshu domain remain. Such stories blend seamlessly into the town's atmosphere. The town is approximately 1.1km long. During the Edo period, it was home to 928 people and was a bustling economic center, with a Rokusai market held there and the price of rice determined. Today, in the quiet morning light, the energy of that time quietly lives on. In the early morning, Nakatsugawa-juku, still dormant as a tourist destination, quietly shares its historical memories with travelers. I listened intently to those voices as I walked the deserted streets. (Translated by Google) 10/10/2025 Nakatsugawa-juku often appears in history books about the end of the Edo period, with events like the Nakatsugawa Conference, the marriage of Princess Kazunomiya, and the Mito Tengu Party. I wasn't expecting much, but the post town has been significantly restored, allowing me to relive its past to a certain extent. It's a shame that the original inn remains, replaced by a parking lot, but the secondary inn has been relocated next to the historical museum. According to records, there were 29 inns at the end of the Edo period. Only a dozen or so houses remain in their original form. Future restoration efforts may see further progress in response to the demands of the times. Ochiai-juku Nakasendo is a historical site located in Nakatsugawa, Japan, which used to be one of the three post towns along the Nakasendo Road. While not as well-preserved as Magome and Tsumago, Ochiai-juku still boasts a splendid appearance with its main shrine being the only remaining structure from its post town days. The area offers natural beauty surrounded by mountains and an atmospheric townscape that exudes a sense of history.
It was a nice surprise to start the Nakasendo hike from here instead of Magome, by walking from Ochiai to Magome you will cross many scenic points and the cobblestone road. Almost no people except for two locals on the way. The town itself is also cute and quiet

This was so interesting and I’m rating it 5* because of the lovely staff who showed us round and gave us tips for our hike. I loved seeing the history of this building and we were able to purchase a souvenir for our Nakasendo Trail hike. Definitely suggest stopping in as part of your walk!

Almost every tour on the classic Nakasendo walk will tell you to start from Magome to Tsumago but if you like to extend it a little I suggest to start from here. If you come by train, take the local one to Ochiaigawa station and reach this place that marks the old spot of the former "juku". From here take the street that goes south and crosses the main road. After that you can't go wrong, the path is clearly marked. Even if you don't speak japanese, when you're not sure just look for 中山道. Or just ask, anyone will be glad to help you.

We enjoyed great pizza, salad, wine, and dessert. Consider making a reservation. They were full even though there were a couple of empty seats when we arrived. We asked if we could come back later and that worked.

This restaurant is awesome. Firstly, although we are not the local, the waiter was so nice and patient explaining the menu to us. All the meals we ordered were so delicious. I suggest "butter yolk pasta". I could feel the chef paid attention on each step he cooked. I love it. The important thing is that though it calls Italian food, it indeed produced a mixed culture meal, Japan + Italy. That is awesome.

KURUMA-ya, a soba noodle shop, has received positive feedback despite some considering it pricey. The prices for their Kake and Tororo Zaru (2nd dan) options, at 750 yen and 1500 yen respectively, are deemed reasonable. The portion sizes are adequate, especially the two-tiered Rusa. Additionally, they serve warm Soba hot water after meals during winter season – an uncommon feature.

It's rare to find a restaurant like this where you can't enter if you don't like soba noodles, so I went. I ordered Zaru Soba and shrimp tempura. Soba 1400 yen, tempura 1100 yen. The price makes you look forward to it! It comes with two plates of soba noodles. It's delicious. The broth is also delicious. The tempura is two shrimp, pumpkin, shishito peppers, and eggplant. It's freshly fried and delicious too. If I had to say something, I think it's a little small for men? 🤔 I feel like I can finally fill my stomach after drinking the soba soup.

(Translated by Google) I love the soba noodles here. They're delicious. The broth is delicious, and the noodles are rustic and good. However, the line is long, so you have to get there early. But the turnover is fast. It's worth the wait.

Chinese restaurant
Chinese takeaway
On May 3, 2023, a new and unforgettable Chinese soba set was ordered at Gyoza no Ohsho - Nakatsugawa Interchange. The dish exuded a sense of tradition and nostalgia with its old-fashioned yet delectable taste. While the fried rice might not have been to everyone's personal liking, it is highly recommended to try the Chinese soba.
Love the food here!

(Translated by Google) He was an ordinary general. I was able to use coupons for different dumplings twice. Seating is over 60. There is a parking lot for about 20 cars. Wi-Fi and electrical outlets were nowhere to be found. You can exit the parking lot on the west side (Nagoya side/Ena side) and get to the Nakatsu Subaru traffic light.

(Translated by Google) Entered the restaurant around 21:50 on 2025/07/25. I ordered a rich ramen and a miso stir-fried horumon set meal, but the gyoza in the set was slow to come out and they didn't bring the gyoza sauce set, which was disappointing. I was annoyed so I left the restaurant without eating the gyoza. I wonder if the gyoza sauce set doesn't come with the Just Gyoza set?

(Translated by Google) I came to the Nakatsugawa store for the first time in a while. As usual, I ordered 2 servings of garlic-free ginger gyoza. It was provided in no time at all. This time I had pieces of ginger, which I've often missed lately, so I was able to enjoy the real pleasure of delicious ginger gyoza. It would be great if the arrangement of the offerings was a little more neat. (Translated by Google) The thing I'm thankful for about Gyoza no Ousho is that most Chinese restaurants have a break from 2pm to 5pm, but they're open all day long, so I stopped by for lunch late at around 3pm. Naturally, there were only a few customers in the large store, and although I was curious about the original menu, I ignored the garlic and ordered gyoza and stable fried rice. Even outside of the Kansai area, the gyoza taste is the same at all restaurants.

(Translated by Google) If you're looking for a day to really savor your gyoza, this is the place to be. Among the many Osho restaurants, their cold water is delicious. Maybe it's the water? The food cooked with that water also tasted somehow refined. The cleanliness of the restaurant left a good impression. Thank you for the meal. (Translated by Google) postscript I often eat Chinese food, but this time the ingredients other than vegetables were 1 mini scallop, 1 small shrimp, and 1 quail. No meat. Even though it says ``Lots of seafood, meat, and vegetables.'' . When a university student's part-time job creates it, it may be troublesome and a lot of things may be omitted. please note. Everything on the menu was on point. The downside here is the quality of the staff. The aunties like the ones you often see have the worst customer service. Well, there are several aunties, so there's only one of them. Of course the gyoza was delicious, but the rest of the menu wasn't that great. However, I usually feel safe no matter what I eat these days. Gyoza Ohsho is famous for having different flavors and menus depending on the store, but even at this particular store, the flavor and spiciness will vary depending on when you go. Of course it is important to always produce the same quality, but it is also proof that it is handmade. Although it's not pictured, the menu item called Shintama Ramen is super cost-effective and highly recommended.

(Translated by Google) It's just your average Osho. When I went there a long time ago, they had the Nakatsugawa set, which was really good, but I don't think they have it anymore. When I went in late lunchtime, there were a few empty seats. I went with my little one, There were a ton of empty corner tables for two, But they seated us in the order that they became available, as per the manual, And the corner table next to us was empty too! I thought the service was pretty good, But it all felt like a regular Osho, So if you go there normally, I think the food will be just the same as always. This is just my own personal preference, but if they'd been more considerate, I would have considered going again, but I won't be going again. The process was to pay, return to my seat, hold the baby, and leave, but the guy at the register made sure to let the other staff know that I'd already paid, which was really stress-free and I was so happy!
