Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Suwa Taisha Kamisha Honmiya is a collection of wooden Shinto shrines and worship halls located in a serene forest at the foothills of the mountains in the Suwa Area of Nagano Prefecture. It is renowned for its historical significance, being related to Takashima Castle and originating from a god mentioned in the oldest remaining history book, Kojiki.
Visited this famous shrine in Nagano every new year these years. Love the atmosphere and you can eat and shop along the way to the shrine. Parking area is too busy during new year holiday but lucky enough to fine some vacancy a bit far from the spot.
Cecilia C — Google review
We enjoyed this shrine very much, tranquilly located on the edge of a forest and seemingly in harmony with the grand, towering trees that surround it. It is hard to appreciate Shinto shrines if you are not Japanese, or don't have a cultural and aesthetic understanding of their meaning, architecture and significance. But this one is just naturally attractive even if, like us, you have little understanding of what you are looking at. So much beautiful wood in the construction, and a pleasing absence of the signage that seems ubiquitous at many such places and that so badly mars the aesthetics. Easy to get to by car, with free parking available nearby. Not sure how to go about getting here by public transport.
Howard B — Google review
It was a very nice shrine with very good vibes.
Jumi — Google review
This was a huge complex. I liked how everyone was dressed in traditional clothes and taking care of the site. It was cool to see a blessing being performed for safe travels for a truck driver and his companion. I was able to get the shrine stamps here. Everything was so well kept. I liked the sumo shrines that where as well which was cool. After visiting here I ate some nice jelly like noodles at a nearby shop which was perfect for the very hot day.
Scott C — Google review
This is the biggest of the four Suwa Taisha shrines. Lmts of interesting buildings and stuff. I enjoyed much here. The main god is famous for Sumo wrestling.
Google review
I visited in late January. One one hand it appears run-down—some structures were off-limits due to renovation, but on the other, it just feels really ancient. I did a little bit of research on this place prior to visiting (as we should, to appreciate the place more), and I knew this shrine is very culturally significant and one of the main ones in the country. It’s considered a power spot by many, but the only power I felt was the cold fingers of winter tucking themselves down behind my neck. It was cold. This shrine is one of the Suwa shrines that house the sacred logs that some brave, brave people ride down a mountainside during a festival that’s held every 6 years or so. I forget the name. I’m writing this on my phone half-dizzy after a strenuous hike.

This area has many beautiful shrines. The Shrines are all next to the mountains, so you feel connected to nature. It is a really peaceful here.

Suwa Grand Shrine (Japanese: 諏訪大社 Hepburn: Suwa taisha), historically also known as Suwa Shrine (諏訪神社 Suwa Jinja) or Suwa Daimyōjin (諏訪大明神), is a Shinto shrine in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is considered to be one of the oldest shrines in existence, being implied by the Nihon Shoki to already stand in the late 7th century. It certainly carries a pride of place and there are thousand year old trees around the shrine. Set in a peaceful tranquil forest. A Shinto ceremony was held as we passed by for a large Japanese company and its staff.

Suwa Taisha Kamisha Maemiya

Shinto shrine
Suwa Taisha Kamisha Maemiya is a centuries-old Shinto shrine located on the southern shore of Lake Suwa. It is part of a complex of four shrines, with a sanctuary that houses a holy relic. The shrine is dedicated to Takeminakata-no-kami, the second son of Okuninushi no Mikoto and a deity from Japanese mythology.
It was very calming to be here with such great weather. I saw people camping higher up which was neat. I liked how quiet it was here.
Scott C — Google review
Its beautiful and peaceful, i recommend going with a guide or reading the brochures to learn about the history and traditions!
Evie L — Google review
I just visited on the way to the floating mud boat nearby. It's not much here unless you're into religious places. For some stupid reason Google Maps only showed this place and not the larger one on the other side of the mud boat place 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

You can see 4 pillars only here
Ameki K — Google review
The spiritual heart of Suwa Suwa Taisha is one of Japan’s oldest sanctuaries. Nobody knows exactly how old it is, but it was first mentioned in Japanese literature in the 7th century. It is made up of four complexes, the two upper shrines of Maemiya and Honmiya on the Southern side of Lake Suwa, and the two lower shrines of Akimiya and Harumiya on the Northern side. Maemiya is considered to be the oldest among Suwa Taisha shrines and it shows in the unorthodox layout of the buildings which form the shrine’s precincts. Unlike more recent sanctuaries, Maemiya merges with the surrounding nature and it is virtually impossible to tell where the shrine begins and where it ends. The premises of the hall of worship, like all Suwa Taisha shrines, are marked by four gigantic pillars. These are erected once every 7 years during the primeval festival of Onbashira, when the locals drag big trees down the Yatsugatake Mountains by manpower alone and ride them in a ritual performance where many put their lives on the line. Maemiya is the only complex where you can approach all four pillars. Before leaving the hall of worship, don’t forget to turn around and get a good look at the beautiful scenery of the Yatsugatake Mountains. The best way to reach Maemiya is from JR Chino station. You can take a taxi (10min), walk (40min) or rent a bike (15min) and explore the surroundings. Honmiya is just 15min away on foot and on the way there you can stop by Jinchokan Moriya Historical Museum.

Suwa Garasu-no-Sato (Glass Museum) is a contemporary exhibit of exceptional glass artistry, situated on the banks of Lake Suwa. The museum offers a cafe, workshops, and local gifts for sale. Visitors can enjoy an exhibition of hanabi paintings in light of COVID-related cancellations. The artists' creativity with glass is truly inspiring. While entrance fees vary depending on group size, the small space offers an extensive selection of souvenirs at the gift shop below.
Beautiful glass pieces. Nice restaurant and cafe. Clean bathroom facilities. I really liked the M Audio sound system they sell.
Andrew I — Google review
The museum itself is small, just one room for the big pieces, but many are remarkable. They have what they proclaim is the world's biggest crystal ball and it looks likely true. Beautiful glass sphere. Other small pieces are around hallways etc. The gift shop is big with glass items and some food, and several craft rooms come off it. We made a candle, where you use coloured sand and little pretty glass ornaments to make a scene in a glass jar, and wait for one hour for them to pour very clear wax into it. It is not cheap, every little ornament is 440yen, plus the cost of the jar etc. is 2500 to 3500 yen. My daughter also made a glass stamp that she drew and they used a machine to sand blast away what she didn't draw. Pretty cool. Also an ice cream stand is there, nice maple caramel ice cream. And a bakery/restaurant we didn't try.
Chris S — Google review
This is a place that is all about glass; art glass to be more specific. In addition to what I think has to be the world's biggest shop devoted to art glass (both made by the artists who work here and others), there is a glass blowing area, and a space that allows anyone to take a class in using gas burners to make colorful glass beads. Unless you buy something or take a class, anyone is free to roam around the shop and watch the artists making beautiful glass items. There is also a small Art Nouveau glass museum which has some very fine items in display, but there is an entrance fee.
Isamu M — Google review
Wide range of glass products in the shop. I spent 30 min and visit carefully and at the end, bought 2 glass cups and ear rings as souvenir there. Would recommend if one likes to buy some quality glass stuff and doesn't care price too much.
Lyon C — Google review
Small glass museum with some very nice items for sale at reasonable prices.
Hector — Google review
Lovely glass museum on the shores of lake suwa with a restaurant and gift shop. No English signs, had to translate with my phone. Spent about 30 minutes and enjoyed the hanabi painting exhibition as the shows have all been cancelled due to COVID. We enjoyed seeing how creative the artists can be with glass
Gillian H — Google review

The Takashima Castle is a centuries-old castle situated in a picturesque park famous for its cherry blossoms. The castle has been renovated and provides tours to visitors, offering scenic views of the surrounding area. It is located just 15 minutes away from the train station and has parking facilities available. The Japanese architectural work of the castle is adorned with sakura trees creating a beautiful garden that invites peaceful walks while enjoying the stunning landscape.
A very nice, small, old style castle with a historical museum inside. You can *just* see mt. Fuji from one of the observation decks. If you like castles, this little gemis a must visit.
Rubyjewlcold — Google review
The most underrated castle with the super unique design among all Japanese castles. Even though it’s the rebuild one, it looks totally authentic and a museum inside is informative and interesting. Outside garden looks a bit wild compare to popular Japanese gardens, but there is totally an own beauty in this. The big advantage of this place it has totally no people and absolutely quiet. So if you tired of crowds of tourists, you will definitely catch a zen of real Japan in a quiet Takashima castle’s garden.
Xiao Y — Google review
The cutest castle i have ever seen here in Japan. It is small but i like the design so much. It resembles the garden view and the mini lake that surrounds it. So cool actually
Ardith T — Google review
Currently (16/04) the cherryblossoms are in full bloom so definitely worth to go now/within the next week! If the sky is clear you can see Fuji from the top of the castle which is also cool!
Christel P — Google review
From a distance it looks cute, but didn't know it was not orginal but rebuilt in concrete. Didn't know until paid to go inside. You just climb a big staircase. Could see Mount Fiji just in the distance on a clear day. The gardens were pretty in the fall.
Michelle H — Google review
Small castle relative to the size of the grounds, but overall a very wonderful experience. Had a wonderful time walking around the grounds. Cherry blossoms made it even more beautiful.
Jason I — Google review
Nice day trip to see this 16th century castle in the middle of the city. We could see Mt. Fuji in the distance and even during winter, it was still nice to see the castle minus the crowds. Ducks, pigeons, hawks and even a kingfisher were at the grounds. Unlike the Matsumoto Castle, the renovated stairs inside here are not scary to step on. I just wish we could take photos of everything. Some areas were restricted. I want to come back and see the crazy festivals!

Katakurakan is a Gothic Revival complex from the 1920s, offering a unique onsen experience with marble baths and stunning views of Lake Suwa. The pool-sized common bath is a standout feature, while the free lakeside foot onsen near the Lake Suwa Geyser Center provides an excellent spot to enjoy summer sunsets. The hot spring exudes an old-world charm, with deep bathtubs and provided amenities like conditioner, shampoo, and body soap.
The Katakurakan, an elegant Western-style building, was constructed by the Katakurazaibatsu—a wealthy silk industry conglomerate—during the early Showa period. Completed in 1928, it served as a welfare and social hub for the local residents. Inside, you’ll find a communal bath with natural hot springs that anyone can enjoy.

Wonderful place. Cozy bathhouse where you can eat and relax (large hall). Don't forget to take small money (coins) with you to pay for lockers, hair dryer, massage chair. Parking is near by.
Nelli G — Google review
Highly unique onsen, you won't find this experience anywhere else in Japan. Good simple bathhouse with a long history in a Western style, the bath I used was carved marble with loose stones on the bottom that felt good on my feet. The bath has beautiful art nouveau glasswork. Very interesting historic bathhouse!

Fantastic experience at the Onsen. Greeted at the door by an English speaking member of staff when we looked confused at the booking vending ticket system. Great facilities and excellent first Onsen experience!
Paul M — Google review
Superior accomodations. Food is Outstanding. Rooms are spacious and comfortable with an open air bath in room. A little expensive, but totally worth the experience.
Hector M — Google review
We were looking for an onsen, so we came to look at this place. We don't speak much Japanese, so I used Google translate on my phone to translate the sign with the prices. The receptionist came out from behind her desk and asked if we were here to use the onsen. We said maybe (we didn't know the price yet). She said that if we don't use the onsen we can't come in. I realised that maybe she had thought I was taking a photo of the entrance foyer when I translated the prices. I still had google translate open, so I showed her what I had been doing. She started yelling at me for translating her sign! We told her that we had intended to use the onsen, but she was being so rude that we would now leave, which made her happy. We left feeling discriminated against for not being fluent in Japanese. We have been trying hard to learn, and speak it better than many foreigners, but experiences like this make us lose the will to even try. Foreigners, beware. Better to go somewhere less racist.
Moana M — Google review

Suwa Lakeside Park

Park
Suwa Lakeside Park is a picturesque waterfront destination offering a variety of activities for visitors. From angling, boating, and cycling to enjoying summer fireworks and winter ice formations, there's something for everyone. The park features a geyser center with a scenic lakeside path for leisurely walks and boat rides. It's an ideal place to relax, enjoy the fresh air, and have a cup of tea while taking in the beautiful lake views.
I went here because i learned that this is the lake which inspired Makoto shinkai when he was making his anime "Your Name。" ー kimi no na wa。). Then I learned from an old acquaintance that long time ago ice from sides met in the middle, which the old folk called kami watari. It was simply beautiful. To my surprise, the scenery esp the evening sky really made me remember the movie, plus while walking along we saw & heard a woman playing soft music with her flute, it felt special. And once you get off at Kami Suwa station and just straight after the exit, you can relax and warm you legs and feet in their natural foot onsen.

We didn't know where to go on our way to Mt Fuji and this was a nice discovery. We walked the whole 16km around the lake. I think it was a favourite spot for locals to spend their Sunday (sunny) day.

Not too many staff you can do , but that's the main reason , it is a very good place to relax and smell fresh air without any distraction or just talk to your friends while having a cup of tea with the beautiful view of the lake , not mentioning that you can have a very nice photoshoots in that place with too many poses that you can imagine, if you are going to nagano or Matsumoto , don't miss visiting this place , it's worth it , it is 5 minutes walking from JR Kami-suwa station.

Suwa Lakeside Park @ Suwa 🇯🇵 – Relaxing Family Walk After Dinner 🌿👣 We visited Suwa Lakeside Park in early April during a family trip. Although the cherry blossoms hadn’t bloomed yet, it was still a peaceful and scenic spot for a relaxing walk after dinner. The path runs along the main road, making it easy to stroll while enjoying the calm lake view. There are open areas, benches, and a playground, perfect for families to unwind. It’s within walking distance to our ryokan, which made it a convenient and refreshing way to end the day.

Great place to watch the fireworks or to have a stroll and do some bird watching by the lakeside.
Martin C — Google review
The Suwa lake as well as the area around it (including the Lakeside Park) is very beautiful in respects of nature: one can see many different species of birds, take a relaxing walk around the lake (3-4 hours), or just enjoy sitting quietly in the grass, feeling the fresh breeze from the lake (which the people living in Suwa also call "Suwa no umi", "the sea / ocean of Suwa"). Its also very recommendable to drink a coffee in one of the cafés or restaurants around the lake - some of them have walls of glass on the second level, enabling the customers to enjoy a nice view on the Suwa lake with the mountain panorama in the background. In summer one can watch fireworks over the lake. All in all it is a very romantic and beautiful place.

Tateishi Park is a beautiful park that was featured in a popular anime movie. It offers stunning views of Lake Suwa and has various play areas and walking paths for visitors to enjoy. The park is surrounded by fresh air filled with momiji leaves, making it an ideal place for hiking enthusiasts who love scenic walks. Although the walk to the park may be challenging, it is worth trying as the serene environment and picturesque scenery are breathtakingly beautiful.
A well-known tourist spot that inspired a scene from the anime “Your Name.” The atmosphere is great, especially during sunset. There’s no public transportation access, so you’ll need to drive or take a taxi, which can be quite pricey. Also, when leaving, you’ll have to call a taxi on your own.
NNchan — Google review
To get there, we took an hr via Bullet, 2hr scenic 'regular' train...once there, prepare to walk on flat concrete, uneven stone steps, narrow and wide walkway, flat winding roads (traffic watching recommended)...worth it. No trash cans til top though. Bathroom suited for men. Women short again (squat). If you have heavy coats, you'll regret it a quarter of the way up. But, love it 20min on top. Free parking that fills up. But, if you're an anime fan, you'll get it. If you're into just taking photo ops, worth it. Heard night time is better. We went during the day. I don't recommend night time walking as I don't know if the nice folks whose path we used, if they have courtesy lights. Still, worth the overall walk. From subway arrival (and return), don't be surprised if you hit an easy 10K steps. Walking all around will add to it.

An absolutely breathtaking view of lake suwa and the surrounding towns. It is quite a bit of a climb from Kami-suwa station, but worth the effort. There is plenty of seating provided not a huge crowd gathers, and I can imagine the view during autumn colors or fireworks is amazing. There is a parking lot right next to the park entrance.
Thagoldensun — Google review
Visited on a public holiday to see the autumn leaves (紅葉). The parking lot was almost full, and waiting on the road might bother other drivers, so it’s better to avoid that. There’s a beautiful panoramic view of Suwa City and the lake from here.
Lakshika E — Google review
Its easily accessible by car or a 30 minute hike, but there are lots of stairs if you are walking! In the summer i would recommend a car. Its worth it for the view though!
Evie L — Google review
It's a nice-ish spot to watch sunsets above Lake Suwa, but way overcrowded on any night when the weather is even kind of decent. Access is really bad with the only reasonable way to get their being by private car, but the parking lot fits only about 20 cars and the line waiting can take over an hour. Get there early or just walk.
Josh L — Google review
Do not repeat my mistake. Better come at sunset, not at night. The best time to visit tateishi park is at sunset or sunrise in my opinion. The view at night was good, but really, no light at the staircase, making it so creepy at first. But when you climb up the tower, the view is actually great
Rinka A — Google review
This park's claim to fame is that it was featured in Makoto Shindo's feature anime, "Your Name." It definitely provides a scenic view of Lake Suwa. It's one drawback is the small parking lot.

Very good classic -style ramen! If modern ramen is a little strong for your taste, this restaurant should be just right for you. They use local Suwa miso, which is renowned in Japan, so I recommend trying the miso ramen.

(Translated by Google) 2 night business trip to Suwa. I visited for two days in a row. It's about a 2 minute walk from the hotel I'm staying at, so it's easy to get to. Actually, when I used it at a company opinion exchange meeting around spring, it was so delicious that I would definitely drink it solo and eat all my favorite things! I have decided that. The day has finally arrived. I was told in advance that the food was not prepared in advance, so the food would be served slowly, but the pace was comfortable for me as I would rather eat and drink slowly. But everything is delicious. Moreover, they provide detailed explanations about whether they are serving food or alcohol. That's how particular you are. Recommended is fried horse mackerel. I ordered the breakfast set meal, and it comes with all-you-can-eat eggs. In addition, a stove and frying pan are provided so you can make fried eggs to your liking. This is also all you can eat. We are also particular about the seasonings that accompany our set meals. The water is obsidian water and is easy to drink and delicious. The owner may seem unfriendly when you first come here, but he is very kind. I asked a lot of questions, and they answered them properly. Since there is only one owner, it takes time to serve the food. It's fine if you want to eat slowly, but if you don't have time, you might want to contact them. Clasuwa is a fine dining restaurant that offers grilled meats, pasta and risotto in a spacious setting with floor-to-ceiling windows and a beautiful lake-view deck. It is an ideal place for romantic dinners, but parents with small children should be cautious as they might break the wine and champagne glasses. The restaurant serves an English menu which adds to its convenience.
Good view of the lake Suwa. We can eat a lot of vegetables by ourselves. We also eat main dish forexample carry and rice, a grilled pork etc.. It is a nice place to meet your friends and eat lunch there.

Food was great, and the location is top notch with a view of Lake Suwa. We had the dinner course meal and I can say that all the dishes they served are great! This is the first time I ate pork fat that I really liked. Service was good too! Their breads are a must try as well.

Fine dining at its best. Romantic place. Small kids might mess up with the wine and champagne glasses. So be careful. I really enjoyed my risotto. Small serving but rich in flavor and my friends loved their food as well. They have English menu so it was all great.

Nice restaurant with nice Suwa lake view. Generally it is good, but main dish, steak is too hard.

Sadly, I only discovered this place on my last morning in town. I can’t believe the incredible selection and quality of local foods and specialties. It reminds me of a site-specific Dean & DeLuca. This is where I could’ve been having espresso and doing work by the lake. Maybe next time!

The view is great and so is the food. Affordable lunch with drinks and salad bar. I can't forget to mention the huge parking, great service and easy access.

Great view of the nightly fireworks on the roof top beer garden at night. Tasty foods and reasonably priced all you can drink (two hours is 2k yen) but the non-beer drinks are a bit limited and the servers are a bit hit and miss thus the 4 stars. Still, highly recommended place to go to enjoy the fireworks!

Tomi is an exquisite restaurant that offers a delectable selection of soba dishes. Situated atop a mountain, it provides patrons with a breathtaking panorama of Lake Suwa. The journey to this establishment may be somewhat lengthy, but the awe-inspiring vista makes it well worth the drive. Prices are reasonable at Tomi, which only adds to its appeal.
A hidden jem on the mountain. It is near Tateishi Park, a few minutes walk. It's a family-run restaurant, offering a soba menu. Very tasty soba and tempura, the prawns are very fresh. Besides the food, the view is excellent. It overlooks Lake Suwa with a huge glass. The staff were very friendly, although they didn't speak English, they tried their best to take your order and teach you how to eat.

I'd add this restaurant to the list of things to check in Japan. The experience, the food, the view and the host were all amazing. I walked up from Kami-suwa station and ate there to see the end of the sunset. Saw the city light up and had a great view the whole meal. It's a great stop if you want to get to the nearby park to get a full view on the lake from up there. The lady is working alone and is doing an amazing job. The food was great, soba yu available at the end of the meal. Small appetizer offered at the start. I chose the Ebi tempura soba.

Soba noodle shop
Yamasaya, a local eatery in Nagano, was visited on a Saturday night around 19:00. The establishment appeared to cater mostly to regular customers. A variety of dishes were ordered, including Tendon Zaru Soba and Miso Tendon. The tendon bowl contained shrimp, squid, eggplant, pumpkin, shishito peppers and three types of wild plants. Miso Tendon had hot balls, dried bonito flakes and green onions as toppings.

If there was a line, it seemed like a few more cars could be parked there. I wrote my name and was called within 10 minutes. Tenzaru is the only choice for soba, so I ordered that. It was provided shortly after. It looks as delicious as you can imagine. Unfortunately, the tempura was cold. I was even more disappointed because I thought the tempura was freshly fried. The soba noodles were delicious to my taste. The store has a nice atmosphere and the prices are reasonable, so I would like to come back next time I come to Nagano. (Translated by Google) Shinshu Suwa Miso Tendon is a new local food that started about 20 years ago. Instead of the tempura sauce, it is served with ``miso sauce,'' a brand of Shinshu miso. Another condition is that ``one or more ingredients from Shinshu Suwa must be used.'' Yamasaya's miso tempura bowl features ``Nozawana tempura.'' The crunchiness of the Nozawana leaves is still there, and the salty flavor is also a great accent. The miso sauce has a strong sweetness and just the right amount of saltiness. This is what it would look like if you made it with miso, imagining the sauce on a tempura bowl. It's also delicious when eaten with hot spring eggs. However, the store's operation is poor and it takes a lot of time. The speed at which food is served is appropriate, but I get the impression that the hall staff is not working efficiently. Suwa Taisha Shimosha Akimiya is part of the Suwa Shrine, one of Japan's oldest Shinto sites. It consists of two shrines located on the northern shore of Lake Suwa. The Onbashira Festival held once every seventh year is a unique and dynamic event that attracts both locals and visitors from outside the area.
This is a cool Shinto Shrine to visit if you’re close to Shimo Suwa Station. You can see everything in 15-20 minutes and not crowded like shrines in Tokyo or Kyoto. Much more relaxing.

During the summer event, held alongside the fireworks festival, the shrine stayed open into the night to welcome visitors for prayer. The entire shrine was illuminated with colourful LED lights, creating a magical glow. Four tall, straight trees stood at each corner, like silent guardians watching over the grounds. At the heart of the shrine, people queued patiently to worship and offer their prayers. We arrived a little late, so we missed the orchestra performance and the night market stalls. Still, we were warmly greeted by the staff and received a beautifully decorated paper fan, crafted with great quality. On the far side, there was also a small shop selling souvenirs such as lucky charms. To the right of the shrine, a narrow path was lined with candle-lit wishes from lovers, hoping for a fruitful relationship. Many had written their hopes on small plaques and hung them along the wooden fence. It was such a beautiful tradition — one I truly hope continues for longer than just a single week. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this event possible.

The Manji Stone Buddha (Manji no Sekibutsu) is a notable 17th-century statue of Buddha that can be found in a serene woodland setting. This impressive stone monument is considered unique and charming, with credit given to Mr. Taro Okamoto for bringing it to the public's attention. (Translated by Google) If you walk a little further from Suwa Taisha's Harumiya Shrine, you'll come across this unusual statue of Buddha known as Manji Stone Buddha. I love it and have already visited it three times. A female acquaintance of mine is from the area, and when she was in elementary school, she would spend her summer vacations reading manga on the nearby riverbank. It's a perfect spot for a cool, sweltering read. What a charming Buddha it is. Its appearance from the back is just as heartwarming as its front. Unconsciously thinking, "Doesn't this look like Taro Okamoto?" I was strolling around Shimo-Suwa-juku when... lo and behold! I came across a stone monument bearing the calligraphy "Manji Stone Buddha" by the artist himself, Okamoto! Apparently, he praised it, saying, "I've never seen anything so interesting in the world." This stone Buddha certainly reflects the artist's style. It's truly an art piece.

On the way to the Manji Stone Buddhas, there is a red bridge, a flowing river, and green trees, making it feel like you've transported yourself to a different world from your everyday life. It looks to be about 2.5m tall and about 3m in diameter. There are patterns all over it, and although it is unclear where the chisel was placed, there is a strange hole-like area at the front of the lower abdomen. There is a sign with instructions on how to pray there. It is not wheelchair accessible. It would be fine to just go up close and say hello. Some of Japan's most famous fireworks competitions over Lake Suwa are held in Suwa City from late July to the end of August. On August 15th each year, the Suwa Fireworks Festival displays one of the most spectacular fireworks displays in Japan, with over 40,000 fireworks lighting up the night sky. It's considered one of the most extravagant displays in Japan. Every seven years, the Onbashira (sacred wooden pillars - Onbashira - comprises sixteen large fir trees, but only those with a lifespan over 150 years and a height of 17 meters are chosen) Festival takes place and involves the transportation of massive logs from nearby mountain ranges to be used as pillars at Suwa Taisha Shrine. One of Japan's most dangerous festivals is the use of logs for riding down steep slopes by participants. 🚅 To access: Kamisuwa Station is located closest.

This lake is where My Name (Kimi no na wa) took inspiration from, before the meteoroid strikes earth. Very peaceful, and don’t look overcrowded with tourist.

A warming hot spring town in Nakano. We stayed in front of the lake and enjoyed the impressive dining and excellent fire work. We should stay longer and walk alone the lake. That should be a wonderful thing.

Modern art museum
The Kitazawa Museum is a waterfront venue that showcases a fascinating collection of French art nouveau and art deco glass art, as well as contemporary Japanese paintings. The museum boasts over 1000 glass works by renowned artists such as Galle, Lalique, and Freres. Visitors can enjoy the rotating exhibitions of these exquisite pieces throughout the year. Although photos are not allowed, there are miniature artworks and other items available for purchase at affordable prices.
Very beautiful and tastefully displayed artwork. Very impressed and recommend the coffee shop on second floor. Great views

The museum is located in Suwa Lake version. On the first floor, there is a collection of French glass art works, especially those collected by Galle and the Dome brothers, which were evaluated and collected early on. It is interesting to note the influence of Japanese art works from the Bali Expo. On the second floor, a collection of Japanese Western-style paintings is on display, including a painting by Higashiyama Kaii, who has ties to Nagano Prefecture.

There's no english translation but art enthusiasts could enjoy the gallery and there are cute miniature artworks and other items for sale, some for under ¥200. The museum closes at 5pm and we arrived around 4:15pm but the attendants were all still friendly and courteous.

(Translated by Google) There are many glass art pieces on display, including works by Gallé. There's a considerable amount to see, and the exhibition is packed with things to see. I was captivated by the beauty of the "Hitoyotake Lamp" at the entrance. The exquisite glasswork is truly captivating. Japanese paintings and other works are on display on the second floor. Not many visitors were there. Perhaps seeing the first floor is enough to satisfy one's cravings. I saw some glass beads by other artists for sale, so I bought one. These were just as beautiful as Gallé's (or maybe?). They were a very welcome souvenir. The Suwa Lake Geyser Center is a must-visit attraction in the Suwa Lakeside Park, offering exhibits on local fireworks and movie filming. Visitors can enjoy an observation deck with stunning views of the lake. The park itself is a leisurely stroll from JR Kami Suwa Station, featuring sculptures, monuments, and even a steam locomotive D51.
Building that provides local goods and onsen egg. The geyser it hosts apparently no longer blasts hot springs for some reason. A beautiful spot along the suwa lake biking path~

We went to see the geyser in Suwa, but it didn’t go up even at the time where we had found out it should. But I didn’t do it and hasn’t since 2022, there is a sign at the center. Not worth going to

On the side of the lake there is this pretty and beautiful place , it has definite times for the water to come out but when it comes out it is really fascinating, if you one day pass by suwa lake or suwa city , you can't miss this nice spot and this nice experience , you can also watch it from inside the center where they put places to sit while watching, only disadvantage is the fact that it's artificial, but still it is very real for kids

I tried the tororo soba at Yashima Sobaten, a homemade and incredibly tasty sticky yam noodle dish. Additionally, they offer a delectable Seiro Soba option that I highly recommend. This place serves top-notch noodles and has received positive feedback overall.

(Translated by Google) While staying at a nearby inn, I went to several soba restaurants near Kami-Suwa Station to eat soba for lunch, but they were crowded and I couldn't get in, or they were closed... So I searched and found this place, so I called and they said I could get in. When I went there, I entered an alley-like road and found a building that looked like a traditional Japanese restaurant. The restaurant mainly has tatami rooms. The prices are a little high, but the soba was very delicious, just as the restaurant's appearance suggested. It would be lonely to just have soba, so we shared some maitake mushroom tempura, which was surprisingly filling and satisfying. It wasn't on the menu, but there was a soba daifuku and paper on the wall, so I ordered it after the meal. It came with hot tea and was a great bun to finish off the meal. The female staff member who seemed to be a young female proprietress was also very nice. 2025/07/15 (Added) Revisited after about a year. Last time, I parked my car at a nearby hotel before going, but this time, there was a huge traffic jam and it was almost closing time, so I went directly to the restaurant. After going through a narrow road, there was a parking lot for three cars in front of the restaurant. There was also another parking lot opposite that, but would that be okay? It might be a bit difficult to enter the restaurant unless you are facing Lake Suwa, although it's fine for those leaving the restaurant. It's been a year since my last visit, but it seems that the prices haven't increased. This time, there were three of us, so we each ordered a bowl of soba noodles, as well as a bowl of maitake mushroom tempura and a bowl of smelt tempura to share among the three of us. The soba and tempura were as delicious as ever. And this time, I ordered soba daifuku for dessert again. It was filled with not only red bean paste but also cream, and had a slightly Western-style sweetness. I'll stop by again if I come to this area again.

(Translated by Google) I stopped by for lunch while visiting Suwa Taisha Shrine the other day. I chose this restaurant because I wanted something that I don't usually eat. I ate something called galette for the first time in my life! This time, each person ordered one. It was voluminous. The taste was also delicious. The cafe has a retro atmosphere. You might think each piece is for one person, but it's large enough to be shared by multiple people. Four college girls sitting nearby shared two plates and ate them. You might enjoy it even more if you order galettes with different flavors like pizza and share them with multiple people...! I want to go again and look forward to trying other flavors. (Translated by Google) After the restaurant opened, the fans started running once customers were seated. As other reviews have said, it was antique-looking, at best, and dirty, at worst. The water bottles had a white powder-like thing on them, the cutlery they provided had what looked like towel fibers on it, and the restrooms were so dusty you couldn't even put your belongings down. As other reviews have said, when there were multiple orders, it took a while for the second and subsequent orders to arrive. The first order was served 15 minutes after the first, the second another 15 minutes after that, and the third another 10 minutes after that. They also had a cheese galette, but I would have preferred if the cheese was served hotter. The galette itself was a decent size, and it tasted delicious. Other than that, it made a big impact, so I recommend it for people who have the time and aren't too picky. Cash payment only. It was a wonderful dish with chewy dough, crunchy vegetables, and plenty of prosciutto. The butter sugar is also a perfect balance of not being too sweet or too heavy. I was able to enjoy the fragrant dough. However, the only thing to keep in mind is the size. Please be careful if you are going for the first time. The galette is almost twice as large as the other restaurants I've eaten at in Tokyo, and the French fries are surprisingly large. The moment he was carried away, his face twitched. It's delicious though! It's delicious though, isn't it? ! (When I asked for takeout for the food I couldn't finish, they kindly accommodated me. Thank you.) Drinks are also of high quality. Since its inception in 2016, Eric's Kitchen has become a beloved café destination for morning meals. Nestled in a charming 70-year-old former residence, the ambiance is filled with the delightful sounds of cooking and soft background music, creating an inviting atmosphere. The menu offers a limited but enticing selection for breakfast and lunch, featuring dishes like flavorful keema curry paired with fresh sides that highlight vibrant cilantro and light pickling.

What a find. I was around the area to visit two shrines and decided to eat somewhere while waiting for the next train to kamisuwa and I am so glad that I did. I had the peach pasta which was amazing, both visually and taste-wise. When he brought the pasta, I almost gasped cause it was so beautifully presented. The salad and peach iced tea were also really good. And the owner speaks perfect english for those of us who struggle with japanese. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend stopping by!

Lovely little place, very cosy, serving thick Japanese toast with various toppings. Hubby had mushroom which tasted yummy and I had the croque Monsieur. It was quite subtle, not too much cheese, so for me it was good. We especially liked the fresh ground coffee beans and drip coffee, usually we prefer espresso, but I think the freshness of the grounds made a huge difference. Great to see young entrepreneurs being creative with a place like this. Thanks Eric!

Came here for lunch, and later that same week came again for breakfast. Breakfast and Lunch are limited to two or three options each. For lunch I had keema curry (pictured). Was a reasonable portion and was very tasty! The sides were especially good as well, with a nice freshness due to the use of fresh cilantro and a light pickling. The curry was well seasoned and tasty as well. After, I had coffee and a blueberry scone which was really a highlight. Forget those hard bricks that you get at Starbucks or the convenience store, this was light, soft, slightly sweet, and really just excellent. If all the pastry is like this I would come here any time for a snack and coffee. Coffee was also freshly ground and quite good as well. Breakfast, which does include coffee, isn't quite as good a value, but still tasty. The scrambled eggs are well done, the toast is tasty, and comes topped with your choice from a variety of homemade or locally sourced topping. Was still all very tasty, but just coming from the states it's a bit of a stretch to pay about ten bucks for this type of breakfast. Still, highly recommended!

(Translated by Google) It was a thick, crispy grilled eel that was fragrant and delicious. The sauce was sweet and seemed novel to me, but the rice progressed. I think the right amount of rice should be used, but if you feel like eating a lot of rice, I think it's a good idea to have a large serving of rice. As a reference, I think this is the amount of rice for a typical unagiju. It was delicious. (Translated by Google) Next to a famous store. Since the famous restaurant was closed, I thought there was also an eel restaurant next door, so I decided to go there. The sauce is sweet and thick. Therefore, at first I regretted that the eel was too small, but the rice went well and it was just right. The rice was soft and fluffy, and the eel was moist, not crispy. However, the skin is not rubbery like cheap foreign products and it is delicious. Some people may have different tastes, like it's too sweet, too rich, or too crispy, but for me, it's okay. However, the pricing of the menu is a mystery. The higher you go, the higher the price per piece, making it feel like the cost performance is getting worse. No wonder plums seemed so popular. I'm satisfied with that, and the people at the store don't push me too hard. lol I don't dislike that kind of customer service.

One of the best pools in the Suwa area. They offer a wide range of swim classes, even for adults, which I really appreciate. The pools are clean, well-maintained, and definitely stand out compared to others in the area. The locker rooms are a bit small, especially when it’s crowded, but manageable. I haven’t personally used the other facilities, but they also have a gym, an onsen, and a variety of other fitness classes available — it seems like a great all-around spot for staying active.

Love this place. Pools of different warmth, a sauna that looks out over Suwa Lake. And to finish off the visit, a restaurant upstairs with a huge range of food and drinks at a very cheap price. Perfect

We came as a couple on foot to enjoy the onsen for my birthday, but we were unpleasantly surprised to see this sign at the entrance to the building and at the reception desk, which was a bit xenophobic (obviously it wasn't written on their website). Decorative tattoos of any kind are prohibited, and this is the ONLY information sign written in English in the entire building. The fact that we are French residents of Japan and that my girlfriend speaks fluent Japanese was irrelevant to the two people at the reception desk. There is no critical thinking on the part of the staff and no patches for sale to cover small tattoos, as in other onsen. This shows that it is a “Japanese only” country onsen. Let's be clear, this sign showing a random tattoo ban is disguised xenophobia, because it does not show Japanese tattoos as in other onsens. What threat are you afraid of from a 5'1" French woman with a 5x5 cm tattoo on her ankle? Think about it.

Museums
The Taizi Harada Art Museum is a relaxed venue that offers picturesque views of the lake, featuring the life and landscape paintings of local artist Taiji Harada. His unique and original Japanese landscapes are depicted through acrylic painting with warmth and simplicity. Despite facing challenges in his early years due to polio, Harada's work reflects his passion for sharing Japan's natural beauty. The museum continues to showcase his art today, which can be visited by those interested in experiencing his artistic legacy.
Beautiful view, wonderful good, peaceful vibes here. Highly recommend!

(Translated by Google) I heard that comedian Tekken's flip book exhibition was being held, so I drove from my hometown to Suwa City to see the above exhibition and Taiji Harada's permanent exhibition. On the first floor, a red Toyota 800 that Mr. Harada never parted with is on display. Although I did not eat in the second floor cafeteria, it is a stylish space where you can relax and enjoy the view of Lake Suwa from the second floor. The inside of the museum is clean and tidy, including the restrooms, and it's neither too big nor too small, so you can take your time browsing. Don't you just enjoy looking at the artworks, but also enjoy the scenery of Lake Suwa, Suwa City, and the seasons as well? I heard that Kanazawa herself was there, but unfortunately I couldn't make it due to work. Photography was allowed, so I took a few. After that, I went to see Harada Taiji's paintings on the second floor. I've seen them before, and they brought a warm feeling to my heart. The paintings are displayed at a relatively low height so that they are easy for wheelchair users and small children to see. There is also a cafe-like area on the second floor where you can enjoy a meal while taking in the view of Lake Suwa. I've never been there, so I'm not sure about the menu. I was a little bothered by the receptionist chatting on my way out. For that reason, I deducted one star. This seems to be a Suwa city facility. Perhaps because of this, the parking lot is large and has nearly 100 parking spaces. Parking is free. In accordance with the concept of a people-friendly museum, the museum has taken care to provide ramps, wheelchair rentals, and Braille signs. The exhibits are also installed low for children and wheelchair users. By the way, singer Masashi Sada is the honorary director of the museum. It seems that various exhibitions and events are held from time to time. However, my recommendation is the coffee shop on the second floor. You can get a panoramic view of Lake Suwa and the mountains surrounding it. I also recommend taking a stroll around the lakeside after leaving the building. You can get very close to the lake surface. This time, I stopped by on a Sunday in early January. It was relatively empty, probably because it was a cold season. Cella MASUMI, a renowned liquor store situated in Kamisuwa, boasts as the epitome of elegance and organization. This establishment stands out among its counterparts on the bustling street, with an extensive selection of Japanese sakes. For a mere price of 320 yen, patrons can indulge in the pleasure of sampling 5-6 distinct varieties of sake. What sets Cella MASUMI apart is their generosity in allowing customers to retain the delicate glass used during the tasting session.
It’s the best and the most cool-looking sake brewery out of five on the same street. It has wide range of sakes. Compared to other breweries, they charge 500yen for tasting.

Among the many varieties of Masumi, I particularly like the incredibly easy-to-drink Shiro. This time, I purchased Suzumisake, a type rarely seen in the Kanto region. After checking into the inn, I savored it, finding it refreshing with a slight tartness. True to its name, it was a perfect flavor for this time of year. The shop also sells a variety of Masumi sakes, as well as a small section selling sake cups and other accessories. For a fee, you can also enjoy tastings while viewing the beautiful garden. If you don't mind driving, I highly recommend it. The parking lot is small, but there are three spots: one across the street from Sera Masumi and one on the left after leaving the store, about 20 meters toward Kami-Suwa. Kujiraya is a hidden gem nestled near Lake Suwa, perfect for ramen enthusiasts seeking a unique experience. This charming eatery offers an intriguing take on iekei ramen, featuring a lighter soy sauce flavor and a deliciously rich broth that even those with less discerning palates can appreciate. The ordering process is straightforward via a machine, and the friendly staff includes English speakers to assist visitors.

(Translated by Google) Since I live far away, I can only get to the Lake Suwa area about twice a year, but I usually come here to visit record stores and eat ramen. This time, I gathered information and came to Kujiraya. It's delicious. This is an iekei ramen that is different from the so-called Yoshimuraya direct line, with a less strong soy sauce flavor and a lighter-colored soup. I often go to iekei ramen restaurants in Kanagawa, so I don't often get the chance to eat this type, but Kujiraya is delicious. After gathering information, I found that some people call it the Yoshida-ya lineage. I once visited Yoshida-ya in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Apparently, someone who trained there opened his own restaurant in Nagano Prefecture. Kujiraya is likely part of that lineage. I encourage you to research the lineage and chronology yourself. It seems that there are other popular restaurants of this style in Nagano Prefecture besides this one. I was surprised that iekei ramen has taken root in this area for so long, having branched out from Yoshida-ya in Shizuoka, not Kanagawa. When such a famous restaurant exists, the ramen standards of the local people must be high. I'm jealous. The fact that they are run by a married couple is even more heartwarming than the food itself. This is a famous restaurant loved by local people. 秋月そば本店 is an unpretentious eatery that offers a variety of hot and cold noodles, along with set menus, tempura, and meat dishes. This restaurant serves comforting food at affordable prices. (Translated by Google) Revisited, rating maintained Curry rice (830 yen) and mini cold soba set (280 yen) Old-fashioned curry rice I asked about the ratio, but they said it was "about 28% buckwheat flour" ☺️ They don't advertise the ratio, so it feels like 37% buckwheat flour, but the aroma of the soba and the smooth texture are delicious enough considering the cost-effectiveness. The belief in 28% and 100% buckwheat flour is something else, I think it's good to be able to eat delicious soba. It's much more delicious than the 28% buckwheat "Ogi ◯ Seimenjo". ※※※※※※ Mori soba is the best value for money. The regular (square zaru 660 yen) and the large serving at the nearby store, the large serving (round zaru 880 yen) are a bit crazy, aren't they? Is it really okay for this price? The amount makes you think. The taste is only based on the soba, and I wonder if it's really okay for this taste and cheapness. Be prepared for the rice bowls to be salty in general. I had the boiled pork cutlet bowl, and it was extremely salty, just as an acquaintance had told me. The Google rating includes set meals and rice bowls, so the score is lower than that of soba specialty restaurants, but if it were a soba specialty restaurant, the taste, value for money, and volume are such that it would deserve four points or more. The soba soup is probably the thinnest in the area. I'm currently ordering the mori soba again. However, when I arrived, there was a sign saying they didn't serve miso tempura bowls! I wasn't sure what to do, but after looking closely at the menu, I saw that they did have miso katsudon, so I decided to order that. The miso katsudon came with miso soup and a small dish for 1,100 yen. It was absolutely delicious! The katsu went perfectly with the sweet miso. The salad served on top of the rice also helped to neutralize the heaviness of the katsu, which was great. By the time I finished eating, I felt like I'd come to this restaurant for the miso katsudon, not the miso tempura bowl. That said, I wonder if the miso tempura bowl will be back...If it is, I'd like to try it again next time.

I'll tell you what was good and what wasn't so good about it. - Reasonable prices overall - They also have ramen that kids can enjoy - Food is served quickly - The rare stewed horse offal is delicious - Cashless payment accepted - Parking available, even though it's in front of the station All of these were great!! On the other hand, one thing that I found a little questionable was that the restroom was small for the size of the store. There was only one. But don't worry, it doesn't bother me that much. I just squeezed it out when writing this review. Overall, I recommend it! I'd like to come back to this restaurant again. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal. Zaru soba is the best! Unagi restaurant
Furuhata, a specialized eatery renowned for its grilled eel cuisine, offers patrons the unique experience of dining in rooms adorned with traditional tatami mats. One fascinating aspect of their higher-priced meal sets is the ingenious placement of the unagi beneath the rice. Although this particular dish might not stand out significantly from similar offerings in the area, it remains an intriguing choice. The establishment boasts attentive and amiable staff members who even provide English menus for convenience.

Awesome local Jap restaurant. We ordered garlic fried rice, steak rice set, pork tongue set, tonkontsu set and a plate of yaisai (fried local veggie) All were cleanly wiped off the bowls and plates. Portions are big if you are a small eater.

(Translated by Google) I searched for this restaurant on Google Maps while sightseeing and found it highly rated, so I went there. I arrived a little after 1:00 PM on a weekday and there were six people in line. I waited about 15 minutes before entering. They took my order while I was waiting, but it took about 25 minutes from when I entered until my food was served. According to reviews, the recommended dishes are the char siu ramen and the Abeku Don (a bowl with fried shrimp and three cutlets), but I ordered the mixed fry set meal (the same as the Abeku Don + fried fish) and the char siu ramen. The char siu ramen had large pieces of pork and was deliciously seasoned. The noodles were thin. The soup was a little strong🍜 but incredibly delicious. I drank the soup down to the last drop. The mixed fry portion was also large and delicious. It also came with salad, pickles, and miso soup (a little strong, perhaps). Overall, the portions were generous and good value for money. If I had to say something, it might take a little while for the food to be served. Since it takes a while for the food to be served, there might be a line outside... It might be difficult if you're short on time. There was a line on the way back as well. I'd give it 5 stars, but there's a wait, so I gave it 4 stars. Takeout seems to be available. There's a parking lot in front of the store that can accommodate 4 cars. If the parking lot is full, ask a staff member and they'll direct you to another parking spot.

Kurumayama, located in the central part of the Yatsugatake mountain range, is a highland peak that offers a variety of activities throughout the year. In winter, it's a popular spot for winter sports, while in warmer months, it's ideal for nature hikes. The area features stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the Northern Alps, Central Alps, and Southern Alps.
I went in winter so it’s a ski resort . The view from the very top after taking 2 chairlifts up has got to be the most breathtaking view I’ve ever seen . I want to come again for a hike during other seasons.

Richard W — Google review
A grassland plateau above the clouds Kurumayama is a grassland plateau situated at 1925m between Lake Shirakaba and Kirigamine, along the panoramic road known as Venus Line. Like the nearby Lake Shirakaba, Kurumayama is a mountain resort which offers a great selection of activities in the middle of nature. A ski lift which operates all year round can bring you at the top of Mt. Kuruma-yama in 15min. From there on a clear day you can enjoy a breath-taking 360-degree panoramic view of Mt. Fuji, the Yatsugatake Mountains, the three ranges of the Alps, Mt. Asama and more. Nature is capricious but Kurumayama can boast an unparalleled high “clear sky ratio”, so chances are you can take a great picture. If you are an early riser, we suggest you try the sunrise lift. On the weekend, the lift opening time is sometimes anticipated to take you to the top before dawn so you can see the sun rise. With the right weather conditions, you might also see a picturesque sea of clouds form at the foot of the mountains. In winter, the mountain turns into a ski slope. Kurumayama Kogen Skypark Ski Resort features a wide piste with few trees, a layout which is fun for everyone from beginners to more expert skiers and snowboarders. Kurumayama and the adjacent Kirigamine are also a great spot for hiking. Once you are on top Mt. Kuruma-yama, you have access to a trail with hardly any ups and downs, perfect for any age and level. A light walk of about 4h will take you through Kirigamine to Yashima Wetland and back. Back in the day the area used to be a grazing ground and the locals kept vegetation growth under control to make sure they had soft nice grass for the cattle. Nowadays there are no more cows, but the scenery remains unchanged. The gentle slopes forming the plateau of Kurumayama and Kirigamine are covered by a thick layer of grass which is livened up by colorful flowers in the summer and pampas dancing in the wind in autumn. There are over 600 types of flowers growing in the area, but a special mention goes to nikko-kisuge, yellow daylilies, which covers the hills of Kurumayama and Kirigamine in mid-July. The altitude is not so high but the view is wonderful because it is an independent peak with no trees or mountains to block around. Although it is good even in the summer when it becomes grassland, I think that the snow covering period is the best. There is a lift just below the top, and you can go to the top of the big outlook by just a few climbs. Mt. Yatsugatake, Mt. Fuji, Southern Alps, Central Alps, Mt. Ontake, Mt. Norikura, North Alps, Mt. Asama, ...! It's a wonderful view as if you were in the center of Japan. Climbing this much easier, there are not so many mountains with spectacular views. Moreover, descending is skiing and it is in a blink of an eye to the foot. Please come and enjoy the scenic beauty on fine day of clear air in winter season.

Mount Kirigamine, standing at an impressive altitude of 1,925 meters, is a stunning destination nestled within one of Japan's most beautiful plateau regions. This mountain boasts expansive grasslands that transform into a vibrant yellow carpet during the summer when daylilies bloom in full glory. The breathtaking views change with the seasons, making it a year-round attraction for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

This mountain is easily accessible by car, and in fact I spent several hours just driving around it and finding different lookout spots. Some of the geography is quite surreal and almost has a highlands feel more than the top of a mountain. It is one of the most beautiful places I've been to on this earth and several vistas took my breath away. I was especially surprised that it is possible on a good day to see My. Fuji from here!

(Translated by Google) It is one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, with Kurumayama at its highest point (1,925m). If you head towards the summit from behind the Kurumayama Shoulder Parking Lot, you can reach the summit in under an hour, although the footing is overflowing with rocks. However, if you're climbing as if you're hiking, make sure you wear shoes with a decent amount of grip and sturdy soles. Sneakers can be quite painful and dangerous. Although this mountain is known for being one of the less difficult of the 100 Famous Mountains, there are also circular routes that take you via the Yashimagahara Wetlands, visiting the peaks of other mountains. If you start from these routes, you'll encounter steep slopes and slippery footing due to mud that remains for a while after rain (approximately intermediate level). My goal wasn't just to climb one of Japan's 100 famous mountains, but also to experience a proper mountain climb with a certain level of difficulty or itinerary, so I took a circular course that took about four hours, from Kurumayama Kata Parking Lot → Yashimagahara Wetlands → Zebrayama (1,776m) → Kita no Mimi (1,829m) → Minami no Mimi (1,838m) → Kirigamine (Kurumayama: 1,925m). I think this is a place that meets a wide range of needs, whether you're looking to enjoy the various elements of the summit, such as the views, plateau, and shop, or just the mountain climbing aspect. Due to the nature of the mountain, there are almost no trees to shade you, so even when the temperature is 20-25°C, there is no blocking out the sun and the sunlight is strong. If you stay still, you don't feel that hot, but if you do physical activity like climbing, you will feel quite hot. Unfortunately, on this day, August 13th (Wednesday), there was fog and unstable weather, so views were limited, but I was still able to see the things I particularly wanted to see, such as the view of the plateau spreading out before me and Lake Shirakaba from the summit, so I was generally satisfied (the circular course was also quite challenging). If you're planning to visit Utsukushigahara and Kirigamine on the same day, both are particularly popular around Golden Week and Obon, so I recommend securing a parking spot early in the morning (I arrived at Utsukushigahara Roadside Station the day before, which has parking for 800 cars, but there were already several hundred cars parked there). As of around 9am, there was a two-hour traffic jam on the mountain pass road to the parking lot at Utsukushigahara (and then another wait for a parking space to open up), and even when I headed to Kirigamine after 9am, it took more than 40 minutes to find a parking spot...

Where's the snow? It's late January, early February and they're still using the man-made stuff here. This place is legit in a valley so the elevation might not be high enough to get good snow, but it still should have some. The conditions were horrible for snowboarding and if you wipe out your ass will surely be hurting the next day! Avoiding this place if at all possible... there are many many other places much better in Nagano. Also the staff at the bottom lifts are "ticket Nazi" making me show my ticket EVERY TIME I went up...really?!? I'm literally the only American out here...can't you use some common sense?!

Please take your trash home with you and do not cause any trouble as we will be using the parking lot. If you are coming from Tokyo, it is quicker to get off at Okaya Interchange on the Chuo Expressway, go through the Wada Tunnel, which has been free for several years, and then go via the Village at the base of the Blanche Takayama Ski Resort. In particular, the Echo Valley Ski Resort's second parking lot is convenient for hiking, as it can be accessed higher than the first parking lot. Visitors can admire a variety of French Impressionist paintings and notable works by Dali, Rousseau, Picasso, and more. The museum offers a serene ambiance with closed areas for uninterrupted appreciation of the art pieces.
It is amazing that all art pieces are originals! They also have Dali in here!

(Translated by Google) Since it was a weekday, it was empty and I was able to enjoy the view in peace and quiet. Although I had heard of Rousseau's name before, I was able to deepen my understanding by watching videos and simple drawings. I visited without any prior knowledge, but personally I don't really like any of the paintings, and there aren't that many, so I almost finished looking at them quickly, but the building and the way the museum is presented is interesting, and the building itself is... It had an art-like atmosphere, you could go outside as you moved, there was a spiral staircase, and it had a church-like atmosphere with an atrium, which I thought was wonderful. I think this is the best point, especially for the view of Mt. Fuji that can be seen across the lake from this museum. The waterfront below is said to be one of the top 100 views of Fujimi in the Kanto region! While taking my time to enjoy the view, I walked along the corridor that serves as a veranda and enjoyed the view of Mt. Fuji...I thought it was a ``healing space'' as the pamphlet says. The shops were also well stocked. The staff were also cheerful, friendly, and responsive.

There is also a shop and cafe, so it is a great place to spend some time looking at the lakeside scenery. The exhibits are dominated by the Paris School, and are from the period when the rise of photography was redefining the meaning of painting, so it was a fun experience to view. I saw a special feature on works by artists who didn't have an art education. The atmosphere was simple and heartfelt. There were also paintings made by the artist when he was older and retired, which gave me a sense of encouragement that you can start doing what you love at any time in life. The view from the cafe is also great. The parking lot is large and easy to park in. Jinchōkan Moriya Historical Museum in Suwa offers a unique and mysterious atmosphere that captivates visitors. The museum delves into the history of the Moriya family, deeply connected to the ancient Suwa Taisha Shrine, making it a compelling destination for those intrigued by ancient beliefs and ritual culture. Housed in a historically rich building, the museum showcases valuable materials and tools passed down through generations of the Moriya family.
Fascinating glimpse into the ancient history and tradition of Suwa. Housed in a fantastical structure, with walks out past several others and through woodlands to several sites of the Suwa shrines. There is an English leaflet, the collection is small and will not take long to view, but worth a diversion if interested in local history.

I enjoyed my visit here. There was information in English and I was fortunate enough to get the gist of the Japanese tour and well through my own ability and the help of a friend. This seems to be a very unusual historical place, as it's quite rare (allegedly it's only here?) to see animal sacrifice in Japan. Not that you get to watch it but that it was practiced here in the past. The grounds themselves are also quite nice to stroll through.

Would have been more interested if the guide there had explained using a little bit more understandable language. He had such a quick tongue not even my Japanese parents in law managed to decipher what he was saying.

(Translated by Google) This visit will be on April 10, 2025. Moriya was the head priest of the Suwa Kamisha Shrine. The admission fee is 100 yen per adult. The museum displays the history of the Moriya clan, documents from the family that have been handed down since the Kamakura period, and replicas of the offerings made at the Onzu Festival held at the shrine. The building has earthen walls that give it a great atmosphere. The Onzu Festival is held at Suwa Taisha Shrine every year on April 15th, and apparently people offer stuffed deer heads to the gods and pray for a good harvest. The bow and arrow are probably for hunting deer. The meat, which is one of the offerings, is clearly fake, but what about the stuffed heads? In the past, 75 deer heads were offered, and one deer with a torn ear was always included, which was one of the seven wonders.

The structure is made of reinforced concrete, with a specially formulated wall plaster applied to both the inside and outside of the walls, and the floor is similarly tataki-style, with hand-split sawara lumber covering some of the wall plaster. The roof is topped with flat stones known locally as "teppei-seki" and natural slate. The four pillars that run through the eaves at the front entrance are made from locally grown yew trees. Japanese restaurant
Shimosuwa Unagi Kobayashi is a laid-back restaurant known for its traditional freshwater eel dishes prepared using the shirayaki and kabayaki cooking methods. Located in Suwa, it's a popular spot that attracts both locals and visitors. The restaurant offers a relaxed dining experience with delicious eel dishes on the menu. Customers have praised the thick and tender eel, emphasizing its melt-in-your-mouth texture.
The collaboration of the tender eel flesh in Tokyo-style grilled eel and the crispy texture and fragrance of the eel skin in Osaka-style grilled eel. Even if you have to wait in line, you’ll want to eat it. Credit cards are not accepted.

I wait for about 30 minutes, my hunger building racing as the aroma of eel wafts from the building, which blends majestically and elegantly into the residential area. Since it had been a while since my last visit, I ordered the extra-large bento box, which has thicker-than-usual eel pieces. It was a very satisfying meal, with two large, thick pieces of eel on a large round bowl. Because the meat was so thick, it was very plump and delicious. The aroma of the sansho pepper sprinkled on top halfway through added to the flavor, and combined with how hungry I was, I ended up eating it all in no time, but it was very satisfying. It's a bit pricey, but it's worth giving it a try. Please note that payment is cash only. There was a large parking lot next to the restaurant, and there was a reservation slip outside the entrance, so I filled it out and strolled around Lake Suwa until the restaurant opened. The reservation slip outside may not have been much use. Customers were already there a few minutes before opening time. Looking at the license plate numbers, I noticed that people were coming from as far away as Shinagawa and Chiba, so I knew the food must be really good. My companion, who apparently has been coming here frequently since he was a child, wanted me to try it, so he took me there. It was a late lunch, so I couldn't eat much, but I had the jyu-ju and uzaku (eel and cucumber vinegar dish). The eel was so tender I could easily cut it with chopsticks, and the meat was fluffy like cotton candy. The sauce was neither too rich nor too sweet, just my taste, and I was completely captivated (lol). I wanted to try chawanmushi, but unfortunately they didn't have it. The dinner to end our trip was truly the best. Izakaya restaurant
When I visited Kakomi, an izakaya restaurant known for its popularity, I had a pleasant experience. The lunch service was busy but worth the short wait. They offer a variety of set meals, including a daily boiled fish option and a mixed fried meal. The boiled fish set came with a salad (unfortunately eaten before being photographed) and featured Samega Ray's head portion, which was delicious despite the challenging presence of many small bones to be careful with while eating.
Loved it. So good. Can't tell ya what I had but I've got ZERO complaints.

The parking lot in front of the store wasn't very full, so I thought I could go in. Four of the six seats at the counter were open, so I was able to sit down. There was a luggage compartment under the chair. I ordered the "Today's Grilled Fish and Sashimi Set Meal 1,680 yen." I was asked about the size of the rice and ordered the regular size, and was told the grilled fish was overnight dried ebo sea bream. The tray was brought out in about 20 minutes. The waiter explained the three types of sashimi. Judging from the way the ebo sea bream was cooked, I realized I had to eat it all the way down to the bone! So, I enjoyed everything except the head and tail of the ebo sea bream. It was great. Thank you for the meal. This is a popular restaurant, so it was full by around 11:45. I asked waiting customers for their cell phone numbers. This is a restaurant that accepts reservations, so if you're not just dropping in, it's best to make a reservation. The batter on the fries I ordered was freshly fried and crispy, sauce and tartar sauce were served on separate plates, and the rice was very delicious.
