Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Suwa Taisha Kamisha Honmiya is a collection of wooden Shinto shrines and worship halls located in a serene forest at the foothills of the mountains in the Suwa Area of Nagano Prefecture. It is renowned for its historical significance, being related to Takashima Castle and originating from a god mentioned in the oldest remaining history book, Kojiki.
Visited this famous shrine in Nagano every new year these years. Love the atmosphere and you can eat and shop along the way to the shrine. Parking area is too busy during new year holiday but lucky enough to fine some vacancy a bit far from the spot.
Cecilia C — Google review
We enjoyed this shrine very much, tranquilly located on the edge of a forest and seemingly in harmony with the grand, towering trees that surround it. It is hard to appreciate Shinto shrines if you are not Japanese, or don't have a cultural and aesthetic understanding of their meaning, architecture and significance. But this one is just naturally attractive even if, like us, you have little understanding of what you are looking at. So much beautiful wood in the construction, and a pleasing absence of the signage that seems ubiquitous at many such places and that so badly mars the aesthetics. Easy to get to by car, with free parking available nearby. Not sure how to go about getting here by public transport.
Howard B — Google review
It was a very nice shrine with very good vibes.

This was a huge complex. I liked how everyone was dressed in traditional clothes and taking care of the site. It was cool to see a blessing being performed for safe travels for a truck driver and his companion. I was able to get the shrine stamps here. Everything was so well kept. I liked the sumo shrines that where as well which was cool. After visiting here I ate some nice jelly like noodles at a nearby shop which was perfect for the very hot day.
Scott C — Google review
This is the biggest of the four Suwa Taisha shrines. Lmts of interesting buildings and stuff. I enjoyed much here. The main god is famous for Sumo wrestling.

I visited in late January. One one hand it appears run-down—some structures were off-limits due to renovation, but on the other, it just feels really ancient. I did a little bit of research on this place prior to visiting (as we should, to appreciate the place more), and I knew this shrine is very culturally significant and one of the main ones in the country. It’s considered a power spot by many, but the only power I felt was the cold fingers of winter tucking themselves down behind my neck. It was cold. This shrine is one of the Suwa shrines that house the sacred logs that some brave, brave people ride down a mountainside during a festival that’s held every 6 years or so. I forget the name. I’m writing this on my phone half-dizzy after a strenuous hike.

This area has many beautiful shrines. The Shrines are all next to the mountains, so you feel connected to nature. It is a really peaceful here.

Suwa Grand Shrine (Japanese: 諏訪大社 Hepburn: Suwa taisha), historically also known as Suwa Shrine (諏訪神社 Suwa Jinja) or Suwa Daimyōjin (諏訪大明神), is a Shinto shrine in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is considered to be one of the oldest shrines in existence, being implied by the Nihon Shoki to already stand in the late 7th century. It certainly carries a pride of place and there are thousand year old trees around the shrine. Set in a peaceful tranquil forest. A Shinto ceremony was held as we passed by for a large Japanese company and its staff.

Public bath
Old-school public bathhouse dating to 1890 with simple tiled tubs for men & women.
(Translated by Google) This is a public bath located just before the slope leading to Suwa Taisha Shimosha Akimiya. I have been to several Shimosuwa Onsen, but I thought this was one of the hardest to find. I relied on the information that it was behind a building that looked like an office and near the slope leading to Suwa Taisha Shimosha Akimiya. I was worried about whether I would be able to find it, but surprisingly I was able to find it easily. I parked in a parking lot called Yotsukado in the shopping district. I told the person in the management building that I wanted to use the hot spring and my car number, and they told me that I could get a stamp from the person at the reception desk and there would be no parking fee. The entrance was just past the noren curtain, but there was only a vending machine installed alone in a dimly lit corridor. It felt like time had stopped. I got a stamp from the reception desk and entered the changing room, where there was an old-fashioned weighing scale. I had the urge to take a picture, but I couldn't because it was prohibited. The bathtub was a long, circular bathtub with a pillar standing in the center and hot spring water pouring into it from two places. A fair amount of water was spilling out of the bathtub. This is what you'd expect from Shimo-Suwa Onsen. When I got in, the temperature was just right. I thought that all the public baths at Shimo-Suwa Onsen were too hot to enter, so I was surprised to find that some were just the right temperature.

Natural Hot spring public bath 10 minutes from a JR station. Thought difficult to find, the red Noren with "ゆ” is easily spotted from the street. Cost 280 yen, a hair dryer 10 yen. A tub style similar to Do-go Onsen in Matsuyama (Round tub set in the center of house, hot water run from a center of the tub.) Bring your own soap, and towel. Enjoy.

(Translated by Google) Of all the public hot springs in Shimo-Suwa, this is the best of the best to me. It has a spacious, retro space that looks like a tiled warehouse, and the water is hot but manageable. The arcade-style entrance is also a unique attraction that you can only find here. It's a small thing, but I was quietly grateful for the free lockers for valuables. It's about a 6-minute walk from Shimo-Suwa Station I followed Google Maps and arrived right away♪ The entrance is at the end of a narrow passage, but there was a sign in front, so I found it right away! I bought a bath ticket from the ticket machine just inside the entrance The bath fee was only 300 yen I can't believe you can go to a hot spring♨ for 300 yen these days! I think Suwa is heaven♨! ✨(lol) I handed my bath ticket to the counter attendant and off I went! To the bath There are no lockers in the changing room, just a shelf and a clothes basket, so I told them to put their valuables in the valuables box! ' So I put my wallet and cell phone in a tiny locker for valuables, put my clothes in a clothes basket, and put my luggage on a shelf! The bath has an oval bathtub in the center. Some public baths don't have showers, but this Sugano Onsen has 9 shower areas on both sides, all with hoses and faucets! The facilities are perfect, just like a normal public bath ♨️♪🤗 After washing my whole body thoroughly, I soaked in the water✨ The faint smell of sulfur tickled my nose😆 I don't have a water temperature gauge, so I guess it was about 42-43 degrees? 🤔 The tube that the hot spring discharges from is upright in the center of the bath, and the water flows out in two parts, left and right. A wonderful bath♨ with fresh water pouring in all the time After the bath, gulp down some Yatsugatake Dairy Coffee Milk! 🥳 If there was a bath♨ like this nearby I'd want to go every day♪🤗 ♨♨♨♨♨ (Original)

(Translated by Google) This was the first bath on my 2025 Nagano Gunma Hot Spring Tour. The water was clear and colorless, with plenty of it, making it a very pleasant experience. The building is old, but it's well-kept and comfortable. I was impressed by the shower, which was kept at a comfortable temperature despite not being able to adjust the temperature. Also, since the nearest parking lot was unavailable due to an event, I used the tourist parking lot 300 meters away. Is it because the hot springs are treated as a shopping street?! It was free. (Translated by Google) In a word, it's a "retro hot spring bathhouse." Truly the most retro of retros. The fourth batter in the retro club. The facilities are dated, so those accustomed to super-sento (super public bathhouses) might be taken aback. There's a saying that goes, "In hot spring areas with abundant hot spring water, there's a public bathhouse. You should definitely bathe in one." I visited this hot spring to learn this saying, and it really made me realize that it was meant to deepen my understanding of the area... (lol) However, since I'm a person who won't compromise on the toilet, the only thing that bothered me was its age! The water was warm and comfortable. The quality of the water was moist and perfect. It was only 280 yen, so it didn't hurt my wallet at all. The milk after my bath was even better. The lady at the front desk was overflowing with love for her hometown, and it was truly heartwarming. It was a truly great experience. A local said, "This place has the most flavor," and I can see why. It was a bathhouse I'd like to return to someday.

Kurumayama, located in the central part of the Yatsugatake mountain range, is a highland peak that offers a variety of activities throughout the year. In winter, it's a popular spot for winter sports, while in warmer months, it's ideal for nature hikes. The area features stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the Northern Alps, Central Alps, and Southern Alps.
I went in winter so it’s a ski resort . The view from the very top after taking 2 chairlifts up has got to be the most breathtaking view I’ve ever seen . I want to come again for a hike during other seasons.

Richard W — Google review
A grassland plateau above the clouds Kurumayama is a grassland plateau situated at 1925m between Lake Shirakaba and Kirigamine, along the panoramic road known as Venus Line. Like the nearby Lake Shirakaba, Kurumayama is a mountain resort which offers a great selection of activities in the middle of nature. A ski lift which operates all year round can bring you at the top of Mt. Kuruma-yama in 15min. From there on a clear day you can enjoy a breath-taking 360-degree panoramic view of Mt. Fuji, the Yatsugatake Mountains, the three ranges of the Alps, Mt. Asama and more. Nature is capricious but Kurumayama can boast an unparalleled high “clear sky ratio”, so chances are you can take a great picture. If you are an early riser, we suggest you try the sunrise lift. On the weekend, the lift opening time is sometimes anticipated to take you to the top before dawn so you can see the sun rise. With the right weather conditions, you might also see a picturesque sea of clouds form at the foot of the mountains. In winter, the mountain turns into a ski slope. Kurumayama Kogen Skypark Ski Resort features a wide piste with few trees, a layout which is fun for everyone from beginners to more expert skiers and snowboarders. Kurumayama and the adjacent Kirigamine are also a great spot for hiking. Once you are on top Mt. Kuruma-yama, you have access to a trail with hardly any ups and downs, perfect for any age and level. A light walk of about 4h will take you through Kirigamine to Yashima Wetland and back. Back in the day the area used to be a grazing ground and the locals kept vegetation growth under control to make sure they had soft nice grass for the cattle. Nowadays there are no more cows, but the scenery remains unchanged. The gentle slopes forming the plateau of Kurumayama and Kirigamine are covered by a thick layer of grass which is livened up by colorful flowers in the summer and pampas dancing in the wind in autumn. There are over 600 types of flowers growing in the area, but a special mention goes to nikko-kisuge, yellow daylilies, which covers the hills of Kurumayama and Kirigamine in mid-July. The altitude is not so high but the view is wonderful because it is an independent peak with no trees or mountains to block around. Although it is good even in the summer when it becomes grassland, I think that the snow covering period is the best. There is a lift just below the top, and you can go to the top of the big outlook by just a few climbs. Mt. Yatsugatake, Mt. Fuji, Southern Alps, Central Alps, Mt. Ontake, Mt. Norikura, North Alps, Mt. Asama, ...! It's a wonderful view as if you were in the center of Japan. Climbing this much easier, there are not so many mountains with spectacular views. Moreover, descending is skiing and it is in a blink of an eye to the foot. Please come and enjoy the scenic beauty on fine day of clear air in winter season.

The Buddhist temple Choenji offers an exquisite and breathtaking environment. The captivating beauty of the momiji leaves is unparalleled, making it a must-visit destination for autumn enthusiasts. The temple's compact size does not diminish its ability to showcase the stunning red-colored Japanese maple plants, providing a mesmerizing sight. Without a doubt, Choenji is a visually captivating place that should not be missed by those seeking to immerse themselves in the splendor of autumn foliage.

It seems it was still about a week too early for the leaves to change color. The path to the shrine was beautiful with its autumn leaves, but the expression of the Bodhisattva statue, which was labeled "Kagome," was especially gentle and beautiful. There was a guide at the parking lot who quickly directed us to where to park. This was very helpful as we visited in a camper van. The Chino City Togariishi Jomon Archaeological Museum offers a fascinating journey back to the Jomon period, showcasing over 2000 relics that reflect the artistic proficiency of this ancient era. Visitors can explore national treasures such as the Jomon pottery, Venus, and Masked Goddess, as well as unique stone tools made from obsidian. The museum provides English pamphlets for self-guided tours and also offers guided tours by historians.

It was like you were sucked back to the Jomon period. Amazing history! There is an English pamphlets from the counter. I went there alone but there was a group that was guided by a historian, I tagged along for more info. Every relics and clay made has a story to tell. Behold! There is a joyous Jomon fire festival at night on the 1st week of October where they sets up several bonfire. Free hot soba soup and tea are served too. Bring a picnic mat for sitting on the grass. Dance and enjoy your night away! So ethnically tribal!

A very interesting museum showing the history of human settlements in this region of Japan. Some really nice examples of earthenware and stone tools, as well as some recreations on the grass huts that works have been used. The grounds were delightful to walk through (although the "Big Rock" is probably not worth the longer walk, particularly if anyone has walking difficulties... It's not very big!!)

Discover the elegant aesthetic of Japanese prehistoric art The region has a long history going back to the dawn of Japanese civilization, over ten thousand years ago. In those bountiful and peaceful times following the ice age that we call the Jomon period, people led a serene lifestyle which allowed them to pursue artistic proficiency in their crafts. The over 2000 relics that were excavated at the foot of the Yatsugatake all but confirm that. If you like art and design, we suggest you pay a visit to Togari-ishi Museum to explore the ancient and mysterious world of Jomon art. The museum features a great number of elaborated clay figurines, bowls, jars and utensils made of obsidian. The pride of the collection are the statuettes of the “Jomon Venus” and the “Masked Goddess”, both designated as National Treasures,. The two exhibits which dates back to 4,000-3,000 BC are voluptuous and graceful, executed with great attention to details. In the park adjacent to the museum you can explore six traditional Jomon pit dwellings which have been reconstructed to show visitors what a village of that time would like.

Half-baked. The english version of the website doesn't include trip-critical information about their hands-on ceramic experience. It also fails to mention that the hands-on experience is not available when the work area is booked for group classes and where that information is found. I tried emailing them a few weeks prior to travel and they never replied. The facility itself has really quite a nice quiet atmosphere, and it's clear they have gone to some effort to make their instructions usable for all(using pictures)- but- the instructions are for a solid clay figurine, so it can't be fired or posted. The reason I go off the beaten path is to discover and recommend new things, and in the process help the local businesses, but this time I find myself forced to give a low rating. Would I have braved the sparse bus service to go here had I known I was going to be lugging 1kg of wet clay around for the rest of my trip? Hell no!

If you are interested in Japanese archaeology, especially the Jomon period (16,500 to 2,400 years ago), you can't miss this place, where you can see the national treasure standing clay figurines up close. At this facility, you can view two national treasure clay figurines (Jomon Venus and the Masked Goddess)and several pieces of pottery, as well as many valuable Jomon period relics.

I've seen them many times at exhibitions, but this was my first time at their home. The richness of the Jomon period blossomed at the foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains. A must-see for clay figurines and pottery lovers. You won't get bored even if you spend the whole day there! Mishakaike Pond is a stunning natural attraction nestled in the mountains, offering a serene and picturesque setting. It can be reached by foot as an extension of a hike through the Yokoya Gorge, passing by notable spots like Otome Falls and Oshidori Falls. While accessible by car, it's not recommended due to limited parking and potential crowding.
Shirakoma Pond is a stunning, tranquil spot surrounded by mountains at 1,500m elevation. The crystal-clear water reflects the changing seasons, creating a magical, mirror-like scene that inspires photographers and artists alike. Please note that this is "Mishaka Pond", not "Oshaka Pond".

A popular spot for photo enthusiasts to capture beautiful scenes. Visiting towards the end of October, with the mountains ablaze in the hues of red and yellow leaves, provides a picturesque backdrop at the Misyakaike Pond area. Enjoy the tranquil beauty of the Misyakaike Pond, highlighted by the changing autumn foliage. Even for those not keen on photography, a visit to this area offers the chance to appreciate the surrounding environment.

This hidden gem is quite a distance from the city, making it inaccessible without a car. While driving is suggested, the breathtaking views and wonderful air quality are absolutely worth the trip. It's highly recommended if you can spare the time to take a walk and appreciate the surroundings.

2024.08 A very nice and quiet pond, originally built as reservoir usage. When there is no wind, the reflection is so beautiful ~~~

We walked to this pond as an extension of our hike through the Yokoya Gorge (we started from the Otome Falls and finished at the Oshidori Falls - which are nearby and also worth a visit). You can also go by car, but I wouldn't recommend it. The day we were there (3rd week of October), it was quite crowded with bus loads of tourists, and because the parking lots are quite small, the cars were backed up down the road while people waited for parking spots. The pond is certainly worth visiting. The reflection of the blue sky and fall colours in the pond was quite impressive.

We went on January 1st and onset of winter, the roads leading up to it were icy in a few places so don’t recommend going without winter tires as it’s very risky. It’s not a very big place and it’s ok to visit if you are enroute to somewhere else but not just for this. There were a lot of other cars covered in snow and they have a dedicated large trucks and earth movers parking and a nice public toilet with AC.
Pavan K — Google review
The mirror lake is difficult to reach even by car due to tight turns and narrow one car sized roads. But once there, you can park, use the portable restrooms and walk over to the mirror lake. You can only see it from the side of the road so don't expect to get any closer. It can get crowded but the best place to stand is in the middle to capture the tree and cloud reflections.

Nice viewing of garden and mountain in the background thru the very large windows. The restaurant has relaxing ambience, good service and comfortable seating. Lunch menu is reasonable, although dinner menu is a little pricey and rich in its variety. Advance booking allows you to choose the window table

A very mediocre venue. The food was bland and not made with local ingredients. The atmosphere was sterile. The restaurant had tried too hard to make everything pristine and perfect and forgotten to add any genuine atmosphere.

(Translated by Google) I visited for the first time when I was staying in Tateshina. It's a wonderful place with a view of the Yatsugatake Mountains right in front of you. Everything looked delicious for lunch, so it was hard to decide. The menu changes about once a month and a half. I can see why it's named after the Imperial Hotel. The food was carefully prepared and looked beautiful. The service was attentive. I had a very good time. Unless you have a villa nearby, it's difficult to get there without a car. The only thing I'm disappointed about is that I couldn't sit back and enjoy a glass of wine (lol). I'd definitely like to visit again. Thank you for the meal. Again, great food and service. We had such a wonderful time that ☆5 is not enough. Visited during weekday dinner time in August 2023. I made a reservation for the ``Ryujin Pond Shore'' course and the kids plate for 3,200 yen (reservations required for dinner and kids plate). When I made the reservation, I was told that ``During the busy season, there is no à la carte service during dinner time,'' so if you want to eat à la carte, it's best to check in advance. Also, the menu changes regularly, so it's a good idea to check the website, including prices. The restaurant's atmosphere, service, and food are perfect, as it bears the name "Imperial Hotel." Personally, I felt that the quality was more than enough for the price. I think it's mainly used by villa owners, but it can also be used by the general public. You can also bring your children with you, and there are children's chairs available. I am grateful for such a wonderful French restaurant and its openness to accept families with children. In addition, the entrance is like a hotel entrance, so everyone except the driver can get off directly at the entrance, which I thought was a good idea when the weather was bad. There is a 10% service charge. Kuroudo is a charming ramen joint located about 45 minutes from Yamanashi. The restaurant is housed in an old miso storehouse, giving it a unique character. Despite its cramped space and small parking lot, the delicious food more than compensates for it. The menu mainly consists of Kanji, but the steaming hot ramen with various over-the-top topping combinations is a must-try.
Insanely good ramen! Best I’ve ever had by far. My ramen standard has been completely blown out- not sure it’s possible to get a better bowl of tonkatsu. The pork was absolutely delicious and that egg was just perfect. And the staff was super accommodating to my limited language abilities. Very friendly. Could not have been a better experience.

My friends and I drove about 45 minutes from Yamanashi to get to this lovely ramen joint. The establishment is cramped and the parking lot is a bit small but the delicious food more than makes up for it! I couldn’t read the menu very well because it was mostly Kanji but I ended up ordering a bowl of Tonkotsu ramen with garlic, and extra egg, and a side of gyoza. It was probably the best ramen I’ve ever had. The chashu was tender and fell apart in the broth and the egg had been boiled and marinated in soy sauce but had a runny yolk. The broth was amazing! It was salty, rich, but had a slight kick to it. I washed everything down with an ice cold Coke, which was the perfect addition to my meal. When I went to pay it was a bit expensive: Around ¥1,700 for just myself. But honestly, it was worth it. I still think about the delicious ramen I ate at this restaurant and I can’t wait to visit again!

Nestled at the base of Mt. Yashigamine, at an elevation of 1500m, Lake Shirakaba is a picturesque mountain retreat surrounded by birch trees. The 4km-long lake offers a range of outdoor activities including kayaking, canoeing, and horseback riding. Visitors can also enjoy biking along the well-maintained jogging road or try their hand at freshwater fishing for rainbow trout and bass.

Lake Shirakaba has become a tourist destination, but the 3.8km running course around it is a blessing. In summer, university relay teams from all over the country come here for training camps, and bicycle manufacturers' athletes come here, making it a mecca for sports. You'll want to applaud the athletes with familiar team names.

Shirakabako Royal Hill is a small ski resort with beginner and intermediate terrain, making it perfect for families. The resort offers night skiing from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm, providing a unique experience under the brightly lit slopes. Visitors can also enjoy the nearby hot springs at Sunshine Lodge for relaxation after skiing. The location boasts clear skies, ideal for stargazing at night. Despite its size, the resort is popular on weekends and offers easy access.
Really good ski school. We got an English speaking teacher Kobayashi san, who taught my 9yr old daughter ski independently in a couple of hours.

Pre-intermediate skiier here. Good skiing ground for intermediate skiiers. They do have beginner slopes but it rained several days before so they left the beginner slopes unattended, which is a pity. Also the snow is thin.

(Translated by Google) I went to Shirakabako Royal Hill in Nagano Prefecture to go skiing. I headed to the slopes with excitement and excitement. The ski slopes are in good condition as there is more snow than usual. It had been a while since I skied, but I was able to pick up the pace right away, as if my body was still learning how to ski. How long was it slipping... Of course, from sunrise to sunset! ! Throughout the day, we were able to fully enjoy the charm of Lake Shirakaba Royal Hill. Thanks to you, my muscles are sore all over my body! Shirakabako Royal Hill is a wonderful ski resort that can be enjoyed by everyone from beginners to experts. The night ski resort is open every day from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm, and there are few people, making it a great place to practice. The place is well-located and easy to access. The only problem is that it's been snowing less each year, and the slopes are getting harder. * It's now March 2024, and I went on the 12th. (Translated by Google) Visited at the end of December 2012. The parking lot is on the lakeside at the bottom of the hill, and there is no guide sign. If you follow the Shirakaba Lake Royal Hill sign up the hill, you will turn around and return to the parking lot. Many people drove up to the ski resort and dropped off their luggage. It is quite tiring to climb up with skis. The free rest room is located just past the front desk on the first floor of the hotel. You can also get to the restaurant from the elevator or stairs near the reception. There were only four tables on weekdays, but this number increases to 18 on weekends. There were many notices such as not allowing food or drink to be brought in on the second floor and not leaving luggage unattended, but there was no sign of the rest room. Kurumayama Kogen SKYPARK is a winter sports facility that caters to both novice and skilled skiers. This destination offers skiing terrains suitable for various skill levels. During summer, visitors can enjoy hiking on the trails while taking in the breathtaking views. A restaurant is also available on-site to cater to guests' culinary needs. Overall, Kurumayama Kogen SKYPARK provides year-round entertainment for outdoor enthusiasts seeking adventure and relaxation amidst nature's beauty.
I hiked this mountain during autumn. The autumn scenery is just amazing, like grassland of Africa (haha, really). You can even spot deers here (the dotted ones). There is a restaurant on the way up where you can try soup curry and bread which is a must try when you’re here.

Nice ski resorts, with just enough of everything - variety of slopes, services in the ski centre and also good access. I would say there are more slopes for beginners than advanced.
Maria B — Google review
Probably one of the best places to ski in shirokaba. Facilities are really up to par with good mix of beginner and advanced runs.
David C — Google review
This resort area is very good for all season. You can skiing in winter and hiking in summer. If you don't like hiking and just want to see from the top of mountain, you just only take a ski lift. But I recommend that hiking is much suitable in this nature.
Hasshi H — Google review
Enjoy the magnificent panorama Get on the mountain lift and in 15 minutes ascend to the summit of Mt. Kurumayama at 1,925m of elevation. From the top you will have an unhindered 360-degree view of the three ranges of the Alps, the Yatsugatake Mountains, Mt. Asama and more. The scenery from the observation spot is truly superb and on Sundays and festivities the lift starts running before dawn so you can see the sun rising from behind the mountains. If you are lucky, you might see a sea of clouds engulfing the valley beneath. In the summer, the gentle grassy hills which form the Kirigamine plateau are covered by clusters of brightly colored alpine flowers, such as yellow day lilies and red azaleas. In winter, the mountain slopes are turned into a ski resort.
Rural J — Google review
Nice highland park for summer hike. A ski lift can take you to the peak where multiple trails branch out. The lift btw is way too safe, slow, and close to the ground that even my 80yrd dad could enjoy it.
Shuli — Google review
Typical tiny ski resort with poor snow conditions. Snow was mostly man-made, so it was icy on the morning and slushy in the afternoon. But access by car from Tokyo is good, which was the main reason we picked it.

Restaurant
Kurumayama Sky Plaza, a restaurant located at a ski resort, offers an extensive and substantial menu. Though some may find the staff's demeanor impolite, the food surprises with its unexpected deliciousness. For instance, the miso katsu bowl features a unique twist with a generous coating of white miso on the cutlet instead of traditional miso sauce. Another standout dish is their crispy Sanzoku-yaki grilled fried chicken.

On the left side is a takeaway cafe with soft serve ice cream, small pancakes, waffles, etc. There is also an eat-in space, where you can eat while looking at the ski resort and plateau in summer. On the right side of the store is the Kurumayama Shrine office, where they sell goshuin and stamps of four kinds. The second floor is the main restaurant, which is very large and I think it can seat 500 people. The menu is rich, from slope food to Korean cold noodles, bibimbap cold noodles, teppanyaki hamburger, chicken grill, etc. It is convenient for taking a break or having lunch, and the windows are large so you can eat while looking at the view outside. There is a toilet at the back left of the first floor, but since there is no toilet at the top of Kurumayama, it is better to use it before taking the lift. Proximity is everything
For day 3, we bundled attractions like Tateshinakogen Barakura English Garden and Yonezawa Onsen Syotsubo-no-yu and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 7 hours.

The garden boasts a diverse array of plant species, including rare varieties that are visually captivating.
This is a good place hidden in the mountains. A very British styled garden with hints of Alice in wonderland and a beautiful dining place. A recommendation if you want to celebrate an anniversary or something.

I went this summer, it was very hot, and maybe that’s why there wasn't much to see in terms of flowers. I think in the spring it should be beautiful.

A lovely English garden with heaps of plants and trees and shrubs in a beautiful location. There is an Alice in Wonderland garden a perfect setting for photo ops, a Rose Garden, A Bakery, Boutique and a Cafe. It was a pleasant change from the structured Japanese Garden with severe pruning and rock arrangements. Located in the Tateshina Highlands it’s a pleasant space to spend some time and wander around especially during the spring and summer months.

Beautiful English garden, not big but rich and relaxing. It has a restaurant and the seating area is nice too. Entrance fee and restaurant prices are reasonable. If you plan to come here again, buy the annual pass which is only a few hundred yen more and will pay back immediately on your next visit. Free carpark is available

Glad we only paid the lower winter price, even in full bloom in summer the garden it to small to the cost of the entry ticket. I am sure that the garden is very different to many other open gardens in Japan, and is a unique experience. (Translated by Google) I visited for the first time on a Friday in mid-November. The sauna was a dry sauna. Regarding saunas, places where you can bathe in the open air are closed during the winter, so people who use saunas need to be careful. However, the cold spring felt so good that it didn't bother me at all. The temperature of the hot spring was very pleasant and the water was very soft, so I took my time relaxing in it. There is a large rest area and massage chairs, so I think this is one of the highest quality public hot spring facilities. This facility caters for out of town folk as well as locals. ¥600 adult admission when I went. Good sized clean and well run. The male and female sides appear to alternate dry and steam "sauna" room. (Translated by Google) Locals pay 300 yen. Away price is 600 yen. Bathrooms with dry and mist saunas are swapped between men and women. This time I was on the mist sauna side, but there was no water bath. There are no chairs in place. The open-air bath was also closed during the winter. The hot springs were not sulfur springs, but rather the type of hot springs you would see in light brown Tokyo, and perhaps because they were public hot springs, the chlorine was quite effective, so from my perspective, the hot water wasn't very exciting. There's no dining room either, so I think it's a bath for the locals to use on a daily basis. However, there is only one standing shower booth at the exit of the sauna, where you can take a cold bath, take a break in a chair for those with a weight loss or a handicapped person, and then take a dip in the cold mineral springs, which are at an insensible temperature. The temperature is quite high for a mist sauna, so it's quite nice. The hot springs have relatively high temperatures, so it's good to take hot and cold baths between hot springs. It's a modest bath, but I'd like to come back again. A cascade of water flowing on a green carpet Oshidori-gakushi Falls is one of the waterfalls along Shibukawa River. It is located up in the mountains, in the highland thermal resort of Oku Tateshina, a few steps’ away from Mishaka Pond and Yokoya Gorge. The three-tier waterfall is very lovely, especially in autumn when the surrounding foliage turns red. A special kind of moss called Chatsubomi Moss grows underwater, on the rocks and riverbed, thus creating a stunning contrast between the azure water, the emerald moss and the reddish rocks. A narrow mountain trail connects Oshidori-gakushi Falls to the main section of Yokoya Gorge, so you can stop by while hiking.

Typically, it's a popular spot during the fall foliage season, when people hike through Yokoya Valley and other areas. Many people also visit the area while soaking in Meiji Onsen. But the winter scenery really struck me. Even when Meiji Onsen is closed, you can see this view by walking down the snowy path. It's dangerous without snow boots. However, the sight of the unfrozen water flowing freely amidst the snow-covered landscape and the complete lack of people makes it seem like the mountains are asleep, but the river is awake. Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Yokoya Kannon Observation Deck offers a panoramic view of the Yokoya Gorge and even provides a distant glimpse of Chino city on clear days. The observation deck is easily accessible from the parking lot, with a short walk leading to an open area where visitors can admire the waterfall below and connect to the climbing path. The surrounding larch forest creates a picturesque setting, especially during autumn when vibrant foliage enhances the experience.
We visited numerous places in search of beautiful fall colours, and although the area is quite small, this was the most impressive. (We visited on October 21st.) There is an observation deck adjacent to the parking lot which offers nice views (it can also be reached via a trail off the main hiking trail that runs along the river below), but a 5-minute walk through the woods takes you to another observation point where the real highlights can be seen - not only the surrounding trees, but the views from the cliff of the tree-covered mountains (and way below, of Otaki Falls). We returned in 2023 and I added a few more pictures of the gorgeous tree-covered mountainside.

Hike along a mountain stream interwoven by waterfalls At the entrance to the highland resort area which is Tateshina there is a beautiful gorge crossed by a creek, famous for its kaleidoscopic whirlwind of colors in Autumn and glacial blue icefalls in Winter. Yokoya Gorge is a great hiking spot with a pleasant (mostly flat) trail which coasts the river for6km. The unrivalled protagonists of this hike are the waterfalls, four limpid cascades which mark the path until its culmination at the impressive two-tiered Outaki fall. Once you reach Outaki fall, you can retrace your steps or proceed further to Oshidori-kakushi fall and the mirror-like water pool which is Mishaka pond. *This last section of the course is not a proper trail and can be slippery at times, so you should be especially careful if you choose to take it. The lively river which carves its way through the gorge appears an earthy shade of red because of the iron sediments lying beneath the mountain. As it happens, the nearby hot springs share the same characteristic and, if you have time, we recommend soaking in their healing reddish waters after the hike. In Autumn the gorge looks like an impressionist painting with the foliage turning myriad hues of red, orange, yellow and green. The best spot to admire this explosion of colors is the observatory spot of Yokoya Kannon, which you can reach by climbing a flight of stairs located near Outaki Fall, or alternatively by getting on a bus at the starting point of the trail. In Winter the waterfalls freeze and a glimmering layer of ice covers the rocky walls of the gorge. With the right shoes you can still hike most of the trail and the icefalls make for some great winter photography. A bit of trivia: one of the waterfalls is actually man-made. It is part of a greater waterway network implemented by the locals more than three centuries ago to bring water to the rice fields. Do you think you can spot it? Seasons: *The dates below are approximate and may slightly vary depending on the weather. Green season_ From Mid-May to early October Autumn colors_ From Mid-October to late October Winter season_ (Icefall season) From January to late February *In winter the trail might be frozen and slippery. In order to prevent accidents, we recommend using crampons or snow shoes. Hiking info: Course 1 - Yokoya-kyo Iriguchi (trailhead) 50min → Outaki fall 45min →Yokoya-kyo Iriguchi Time required: about 1h40min Level: 1 Course 2 - Yokoya-kyo Iriguchi (trailhead) 50min → Outaki fall 15min → Yokoya Kannon Observatory Spot 1h → Yokoya-kyo Iriguchi Time required: about 2h Level: 2 Course 3- Yokoya-kyo Iriguchi (trailhead) 50min → Outaki fall 25min → Oshidori-kakushi fall/ Mishaka Pond 25min → Outaki fall 45min → Yokoya-kyo Iriguchi Time required: about 2h40min Level: 2

(Translated by Google) Visited on Saturday morning, October 21, 2023, to view autumn leaves. Although the autumn leaves are a little late this year, the colors have changed more than I expected and I was very satisfied. The area around the observation deck has already turned red and yellow. The view beyond the observation deck is spectacular, and you can see the town beyond the mountain. In terms of autumn leaves, it's about half and half. It takes less than 10 minutes on foot from the nearest parking lot, and the roads along the way aren't too undulating, so it's easy to access. Please note that due to the high altitude, it was much colder than the area below. It was originally a cold day, but the temperature near the observation deck was more than 5 degrees colder than 10 degrees. The wind is blowing, so it's a good idea to stay warmer than you think. Pilatus Tateshina Snow Resort is a nature lover's paradise, offering stunning views of the Alps and great hiking options. While it may not cater much to English speakers, it provides excellent walking trails with specified hiking times. The resort features beginner-friendly and intermediate slopes, along with backcountry skiing paths for a more rewarding experience. Visitors can enjoy well-prepared equipment, including gondolas and lifts, as well as good local restaurants.
Good for family with children starting skiing or snowboarding. Adults can enjoy the 4km long course with medium level slopes.

This is a great place for nature! There are good hiking options and the views from the top of the ropewah are amazing. You can see much of the alps all around you. Don't expect much English as this is a very local place designed for Japanese travelers. There are good walking trails and maps that specify hiking time required. The cafe at the top is bad and doesn't offer much - make sure to get everything you need before arriving there .

The snow is very good and the resort is friendly with good food. It seems a good place for families, with things to do beside skiing as well. However, parking seems quite limited and not so well organised, so you may be disappointed if you arrive by car later than 9am or so.

Nestled in a charming locale, North Point is the ultimate destination for those looking to create unforgettable memories with loved ones over delicious food. This restaurant has become a cherished spot for many, including families celebrating special occasions. One couple fondly recalled their wedding celebration here and returned with their parents after a decade apart, eager to indulge in the tender steaks that North Point is known for.

After my wife and I got married, we had a celebration here with each other's parents. Perhaps they were remembering that day. My parents, who were visiting from Kobe for the first time in 10 years, said, "I want to eat steak at North Point." So I came with them today. My parents are in their late 80s, but they devoured a 200g steak in one go. The meat is so tender. This time, we ordered a B-grade steak, so I don't think it was A5 rank. Still, it was tender and melted in your mouth. Excellent. I'm sure they can enjoy meat of this quality at this price only because they purchase an entire award-winning cow. I'm so grateful. The fatty parts are white, like a steak. Normally, this amount of fat would make some people feel sick. But both my elementary school-aged child and my father, who is in his late 80s, ate it all, including the fat. Every time they put a knife to the steak and every time they put it in their mouth with a fork, their loved ones smile. I'd love to come again. In fact, it was really delicious. Thank you for a wonderful time. Great setup. Great interior design. Great wood burning fireplace. Great table service. And that's where the greatness of this restaurant ends. For the price, the food served ranks lower than a street side restaurant in some lowly city in an under developed country. 1700 Yen for an 8 inch pizza baked in a normal electric oven using ready made pizza base bought off the shelf! The cheese was not fresh mozzarella.... But the factory packed cheap cheese that you can buy at your local departmental store. Even a 500 Yen brick oven pizza in Tokyo tastes way better. The risotto was a disgrace.... Hardly any cheese.. And just an overwhelming stench of the disproportionately used sea food, which didn't seem fresh. And that mess costs 2000 Yen! The tiramisu was anything but a tiramisu... The Japanese twist on the flavour completely destroyed what should have been the perfect ending. The coffee.. Just about alright.... Overall, this restaurant is a sham.... And an insult to Italian cuisine.... Besides being a complete rip off.

Choju Sarashina is a popular soba restaurant in Japan known for its delicious Juwari Soba and Nihachi Soba. The texture and taste of the soba are distinct, and the tempura is crispy, with the corn tempura being a recommended favorite. Even though it's a soba restaurant, their udon is also highly praised for its chewy texture.
My favorite sobaya in Japan. Have to have its cold soba noodle made of 100% soba-flour. I am lucky to try winter cold dry soba (time limited) this time! After soaking in the hot springs on my way back from hiking in the North Yatsugatake Mountains, I was hungry, so I decided to stop by for some soba noodles. It's not often that a soba restaurant is open at night, so this is a relief. I managed to pit in the last available parking space just in time. When I entered the restaurant, there were two groups waiting, but I was able to sit and wait in the waiting area at the entrance of the restaurant, so it wasn't a problem, but perhaps because it was in the evening, the turnover rate seemed slow considering the number of customers. I ordered chilled soba noodles with grated daikon radish, and they apparently use 28% buckwheat flour for chilled soba noodles. The 28% buckwheat flour was really delicious, so next time I'd like to try the 100% buckwheat flour with tempura. (Translated by Google) 😛It was almost full at lunch time on Sunday, but I was lucky...I was shown to my seat right away as it seemed like it had just turned around.🤪Everything was delicious!❣️Considering the cost performance, the price was a little more modest. If that's the case, I'd give it a 5 overall rating...The ``simmered butterbur'' and ``simmered Nozawana shigureni'' (I think they're sold as souvenirs?) with the roe make a nice accent between meals. The ``Mizore Fried Soba Gaki'' was perfect, as was the taste of the ingredients and the seasoning sauce...I'm sure they did a lot of research! ️👏The soba was delicious, 🦆The duck soup and walnut soup were delicious with a twist.👍I like it❣️Japanese soba restaurants are always a hit or miss as the cost performance varies considerably depending on the store. It’s scary😱…but I don’t recommend this place…LOL✌️ (Original) 😛日曜日のお昼時、ほぼ満席でしたが運が良かったです…

From the parking lot, there is a small entrance to the soba restaurant with a noren curtain. I made the Yurakuan set. The chewy soba noodles go down your throat. The staff at the shop said that it was 100 percent soba. The soup is refreshing. I wonder if there are less green onions and seasonings. Today's dish was soba yokan. It was soft and delicious with a slight soba flavor melting in the mouth on the agar. The tempura was freshly fried and delicious. I was asked to eat the tempura with salt, so I added some salt myself. The store staff was also cheerful and made me feel comfortable. Of course, soba-yu is also delicious. The inside of the store is also beautiful. There were quite a few people coming in on Friday, so it looks like it will be crowded on holidays. I was also curious about Nagaimo Soba🤣 There are no large portions. Additional soba is 700 yen. If you want to eat a lot, add more. Nestled at the summit, Tsuboniwa Natural Garden is a breathtaking oasis that invites visitors to explore its winding walking paths amidst stunning seasonal alpine flora. Open throughout the year, this enchanting garden attracts hikers, trekkers, skiers, and snowboarders alike, making it a must-visit destination in Tateshina. The journey begins with an exhilarating ride on the ropeway that effortlessly elevates you to 2,000 meters above sea level.
Easy trekking path begin just at the cable car station. Strong UV though.

A Japanese rock garden created by the hand of Nature This little gem is located on the Northern side of the quasi-national park of Yatsugatake at 2237m above sea level, easily accessible via the Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway with a short 7min ride. Tsuboniwa is a piece of art created by the hand of Nature. The park, which originated from a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago, looks like a traditional Japanese garden (thus the name “tsuboniwa”) with windswept short pines and igneous rocks generated by hardened lava as its main decorative elements. The panorama from the observation deck right next to the ropeway station is spectacular. You have an unobstructed view of the Yatsugatake Mountains, the three ranges of the Alps, Mt. Ontake and Kirigamine. There is a pleasant hiking course through the park suitable for any age and level that you can complete in about 40min. Tsuboniwa, though, is also a great starting line for more challenging treks. From here you can climb up Mt. Shimagare-yama or Mt. Yoko-dake quite easily. In winter, the mountain gets covered by a thick layer of pure white snow. You can ski and snowboard at the Pilatus Tateshina Snow Resort or enjoy a hike into the mountain with snow shoes. The biggest attractions at this time of the year are the “snow monsters”, tall snow-covered trees, and riming, frozen water droplets hanging from the tree branches. Seasons: *The dates below are approximate and may slightly vary depending on the weather. Green Season_ From mid-April to late September Autumn season_ From late September to early October Winter season_ From mid-December to late March Flowers: Lingonberry _ June to July Fringed Galax_ June to July Japanese Rhododendron_ July

Even if it goes in the summer, flowers are blooming in places rocky rocks, It does not become a flower garden. It will be winter after all. A small monster (a tree covered with snow) stands in places of huge silver world, At the foot is a fantastic pattern of shukabra that the wind created. If you look up, contrast between white and black of forests of Mt. Yokodake and Mt. Shimagare. You can easily enjoy the unique scenery in winter without climbing from the ropeway station. If the weather is nice, you can maneuver the snowy field, but when the weather gets worse, a strong wind blows through and it becomes a frigid hell. It is necessary to take adequate measures against cold in winter.

(Translated by Google) Tsubo-niwa Nature Garden, located in Kitayama, Chino City, Nagano Prefecture, is a garden of alpine plants formed on a lava plateau, located just a short distance from the summit station of the Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway (2,237 meters above sea level). This terrain, created by the eruption of Mt. Yokodake, is home to alpine plants such as Japanese stone pine, cowberry, and black crowberry, and offers a variety of seasonal views. It is said that the frost-covered trees, especially in winter, take on a fantastical appearance when illuminated by the sunlight. Parking space: Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway parking lot (accommodates approximately 600 cars). Fees: Admission to Tsubo-niwa Nature Garden is free, and the ropeway costs 2,600 yen round trip for adults (junior high school students and above) and 1,300 yen round trip for children (elementary school students). One-way tickets cost 1,400 yen for adults and 700 yen for children. Toilets: Toilets are available at the ropeway base station and summit station. Access from the parking lot: You can walk from the parking lot to the ropeway base station. After taking the ropeway and getting off at the summit station, it's a few minutes' walk to Tsuboniwa Nature Park. Time required: There is a promenade in Tsuboniwa Nature Park that takes about 40 minutes to go around. There are other routes in addition to the circular route, so depending on where you go, it may take even longer. Ease of walking: There is a promenade and it is relatively flat, so even beginners can walk around safely, but the lava area has a unique rugged terrain, so you need to be careful where you step. Attractions: There are many spots where you can experience the beauty of nature up close, such as colonies of alpine plants and frost-covered trees in winter. Impressions: Located at an altitude of over 2,000 meters, it is cool even in summer and is ideal as a summer resort. It is also easily accessible by ropeway, so it is recommended for families and beginners. Points of note: Because of the high altitude, the weather changes drastically and the temperature is low. Don't forget to prepare cold weather measures and rain gear. Although the walking trails are well maintained, the footing is generally poor, so you should take care to wear non-slip shoes and other appropriate footwear.

(Translated by Google) We visited in mid-September. It was cloudy and about 15°C. Just a short distance from the Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway, this hiking trail offers a mystical landscape of volcanic rocks and alpine plants. The summit is 2,237m above sea level, and a circular trail takes about 30 minutes, making it easy for even first-time visitors to fully enjoy the natural scenery. ◾️Attractions ・Alpine plants like lingonberries and rhododendrons blooming among the rocks are truly Ghibli-esque. ・On clear days, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Yatsugatake mountain range and the Southern Alps. ・Since it's located right off the ropeway, you don't need any hiking gear to access it. ◾️Best for families (elementary school students) ・The circular trail features boardwalks and cobblestones, creating a sense of adventure. ・It's just the right amount of exercise for elementary school students (you can complete the hike in under an hour). ・Sneakers are essential due to the many rocky areas. Sandals and strollers are not recommended. ・The high altitude keeps it cool, even in midsummer. A light jacket is a good idea. ◾️ Important Notes - Depending on the weather, fog can cause poor visibility. - UV protection is essential on sunny days. Don't forget a hat and sunscreen. - The summit cafe may get crowded during peak seasons. It's also a bit pricey, so plan your meal plans in advance to ensure a smooth ride. This was a wonderful hiking spot where you can experience the power of nature with your children. It gives you a light mountain climbing experience, which will inspire your children's adventurous spirit and make them want to climb even higher next time. This is a highly recommended spot for family trips. There's a well-maintained walking trail that takes about 30 minutes to complete, and the scenery resembles Onioshidashi Park at the foot of Mount Asama. Because it's located at an altitude of over 2,000 meters, temperatures are low even in midsummer, so long sleeves and other cold weather gear are essential. Around Golden Week in May, there's still snow and temperatures drop to single digits, so mid-winter Tokyo attire isn't too bad. When I visit, I usually take a one-way ticket to the summit and then walk back down. You can enjoy a leisurely view of the Yatsugatake mountain range and other mountains as you descend. However, be careful as there can be a lot of snow in May (crampons are recommended). In the summer, you can trek without any worries.

Tateshina Amusement Aquarium is a family-friendly aquatic facility that showcases live exhibitions of freshwater fish, accompanied by chances to nourish carp and turtles. This destination offers an engaging experience for children who can engage in feeding activities specifically catered towards koi fish. With its diverse array of interactive displays and opportunities to interact with marine life, Tateshina Amusement Aquarium provides an enjoyable outing for families seeking a hands-on educational experience in an aquatic setting.

It was interesting enough for my family, including a 4 year old daughter. The admission price is high at around 1300 yen per adult, as how much time we spent there was limited. There is enough there to fill up an hour of entertainment depending on the interests of your family. Getting there is a bit tough as it is in the mountains with all of the winding roads. If you are going to the very close by ski resort and have time, I would recommend stopping here with young kids (or those interested in sea life).

Since it was a weekday, there were few cars and people around, and from a visitor's perspective, it was wonderful to see an empty aquarium. This aquarium is home to many rare freshwater fish, which was very interesting. The interior has a very handmade feel, which adds to the wonderful atmosphere. The very long tank filled with koi fish was great to feed and to see. While it may have been empty, we probably only spent about 1-1.5 hours looking around. The souvenir shop was small, and we didn't find anything we particularly wanted, but if you're traveling with small children, you'll probably find a lot of things you'll want. Looking at the beautiful fish is soothing. There are also special event times, so it's a good idea to plan your visit accordingly. I love these kinds of homey aquariums and highly recommend them. Nagoya → Chino Station (JR Chuo Main Line) • Limited Express "Shinano" Nagoya → Shiojiri (approx. 130 minutes) • Shiojiri → Chino (approx. 40 minutes by local train or approx. 30 minutes by Azusa Limited Express) 2. Since we were staying overnight and it was the kids' snowboarding debut, we didn't buy a lift ticket on the first day and just walked a little bit up and down. Repeat. I wonder if there are a lot of debutantes around me, as there are a lot of young children and most of them are accompanied by their parents, so I wonder if it's okay if they really make a debut!? The course you can ski on the snow escalator is too short, but when you take the lift to the top, it's a shame that there are only intermediate and advanced courses 💦 It was snowing, and even though the second day was a blizzard on the first day, it was an icy slope, so even intermediate skiers had to be careful. The man in charge of the snow escalator is kind and always greets you. I bought a lift ticket at a discount when I stayed at Tokyu Resort, but I still think it's expensive. The attached restaurant is actually a rest area rather than a restaurant. They did sell cup ramen, a few types of rice balls, and bento boxes. I can't wait for the food. Mount Tengu, a 2,646m peak named after a mythological creature, is a popular destination for hikers and climbers seeking scenic views. The trail from Karasawa Kosen to the summit offers diverse experiences, including a modest climb through forested areas and breathtaking vistas from both Nishitengudake and Higashitengudake summits.
Great mountain worthy of climbing.

On Sunday, I arrived at midnight because I thought the parking lot would be crowded, and spent the night in the car. The Milky Way was so captivating that it was amazing. However, since we were at an altitude of 1,800m, it was cold sleeping in the car. On the way up, we hiked through a forest of moss and Japanese silver fir. Halfway through, there was an observation deck with a spectacular view and some rock climbing, which was fun. Of course, the view from the summit was spectacular. On the way back, I descended via Kuroyuri Hütte, but the path was covered with large, boulders, so it took longer and was more difficult than the climb. It took longer than the usual course time. Just before the summit of Tengu-dake (Nishi-Tengu-dake), you have to climb over rocks, and although there are painted markers, rocks of this magnitude are rare in the Okutama area. Loved the views front the top. Every pain in your muscle feels worth once you reach the top. The hike is not for complete beginner. So go with some idea in your mind that you will have to climb stairs and use chains to push yourself up from narrow and steep rocky areas. We didn't use a helmet to climb but felt the need of it as rocks slipped from our shoes also sometimes and we were worried if it's gonna hit somebody down. So better be prepared.

The trail was gentle, like a hike through the forest, but once I passed Gyojagoya, the path suddenly became steeper, with wooden and iron stairs appearing. From the ridge, I had to clamber over an incredibly steep rocky area. I was exhausted by the time I got this far, but there was a summit hut just 20 meters from the peak, where I could comfortably rest and order a cup of coffee. Given the availability of such facilities, it would be better to stay overnight at a summit hut or Gyojagoya. Chino City Yatsugatake Museum offers an immersive experience with its interactive exhibits, including a simulated volcanic activity display. Visitors can also explore pottery and clay vessels dating back to the Jomon and Kofun periods.

If you look closely at the specimens of flora and fauna, you will find hidden animals and birds, which are fun to observe. It was also interesting to learn about the reason why the Japanese white butterfly, which has been around since the Ice Age, can be seen in the high mountains of Mt. Yatsugatake. I was even more impressed as I was able to understand the Sakamoto Yogawa River, which I saw at the Togashiki Jomon Museum and Yokoya Gorge, through panel explanations and video viewing. There are explanations and videos that show how difficult it is to make agar, and the tools are also on display. I didn't know that saws were a local industry! Soba noodle shop
During my recent travels, I had the pleasure of dining at Ryozan-tei Soba Restaurant, a charming family-run establishment that truly stands out. This hidden gem specializes in soba noodles made from their own homegrown and milled buckwheat, known as juu-wari soba. The difference in flavor is remarkable compared to regular soba noodles that often contain wheat flour.
My extended family and I enjoyed a delicious lunch at the family-run Ryozan-tei soba restaurant. We ordered the cold zaru soba noodles and tempura. One of the cool and unique things about Ryozan-tei is that they actually grow and mill their own buckwheat for their signature noodles made entirely from soba buckwheat flour (called juu-wari soba 十割蕎麦 in Japanese). While more expensive than regular soba noodles (that are actually mostly made with wheat flour) you can definitely taste the difference. The seasonal tempura was light and crispy too.

Fine soba that satisfies even picky soba eaters The owner is chosen as one of the best 100 chefs in Nagano. The Soba is made from 100% buckwheat and the texture is chewy and silky since he grows buckwheat and cuts it by himself. He recommends that you should eat the Soba with nothing first, put some salt and spicy ground radish, and then dip the Soba into dipping sauce that he is proud of. After that, you can eat whatever you like.

(Translated by Google) I dropped by on Saturday. Some reviews said there was a long wait for the food to be ready, but perhaps it was a good idea to go during the off-peak hours in the afternoon, as the food was brought to us without a long wait. The menu states that the soba noodles are grown in-house and are carefully ground. It was written that they use carefully selected ingredients for the soup. They even gave examples of how to eat the food, so I thought they were very particular about how to eat it, but the wife's customer service attitude was very gentle and she said, ``If you'd like, try this way,'' so I didn't feel like I was being forced to eat the food and it was delicious. The tea that was served first was also very tasty. The soba noodles were also chewy and I could definitely feel the subtle flavor even when I ate them alone. The rock salt had a strong taste, so I was careful not to add too much. On the other hand, the spicy daikon radish didn't feel that spicy, but it didn't have any unique bitterness, and it just went well with the soba noodles. I tried all the ways to eat it, and all of them were delicious and I was very satisfied with the taste. I ordered a large portion, but I felt like I could have had a little more after my workout. The soba was delicious, but I won't be going there again. (Translated by Google) A trip to Shinshu is a must-try: soba noodles. So I stopped by here. The soba noodles are 100% buckwheat, and the delicious aroma of soba fills your nose. It was my first time eating soba noodles with salt, and it was surprisingly delicious! The soba noodles were delicious, but even better was the soba tea, which I bought some from the shop. (Translated by Google) I went in to have a quick meal on the way back from a trip, and found it to be a stylish restaurant serving course meals. When I was at a loss as to what to do with my friend, the madam of the restaurant seemed to understand and said heartwarming words to me, saying that she would make some light pasta and salad for me. Please take my word for it. The salad was made with home-grown vegetables and was very delicious, and she made two types of pasta: squid ink and seafood, and asked us to share the pasta as well. We had a lot of fun talking, and the last lunch of our trip became an unforgettable memory. I went home talking to my friend about how I would like to visit her again. Thank you very much. Not only was the food delicious, but the atmosphere of the restaurant was also friendly and I was able to eat without feeling nervous. (Translated by Google) I was looking for a delicious lunch restaurant with my family on the way back from Tateshina, and it had great reviews, so I made a reservation and went there. It was a cozy restaurant with about five tables, one chef and one server. For lunch, I ordered a 3,500 yen course that included hors d'oeuvres (choose from 5 to 7 types), soup, salad, main (meat or fish), and dessert. The hors d'oeuvres were sea bream carpaccio and tuna wrapped in prosciutto, and both were delicious, especially the latter, which had a texture I had never eaten before and I devoured it in no time. By mixing the consommé jelly with the vichyssoise, the cold soup gradually changed its taste and I was able to enjoy it (the flowers at the bottom of the soup were also beautiful 🌼) The main dish was stewed hamburger meat, but the flavor soaked into the meat well, making it soft and melty, making it very delicious. The last dessert was also fun because the whole family got to share different cakes and ice cream. It was a great restaurant with great food, service, and atmosphere. If I have a chance, I would like to go there again for dinner.

The vegetables grown on their own farm were very delicious, and the wife was very kind in explaining the vegetables and mushrooms🍄. Tateshina Grand Hotel TAKINOYU is a luxurious hot spring hotel that boasts three restaurants and stunning river views. Along with its bathhouses and karaoke rooms, the hotel offers a relaxing spa experience. The buffet-style restaurant has an extensive selection of food dishes to choose from. Although some rooms on the lower floor may be small, they are clean and comfortable with adjustable heating options. Guests can open windows for fresh air or turn on the air conditioner as needed.
We had very good experience. We slept on the futon on the floor . We Tried their baths . Very convenient to have an option for the private baths ( small fee) . Breakfast was included. Alot of option for the buffet breakfast. Try to go as soon as they open. After half an hour it was a big line to get in .

We visited this facility only to use the hot springs, not to stay overnight. This facility has many hot spring locations, but in our case we were limited to one hot spring. However, the hot springs facing the stream are wonderful, and the facility is spacious, clean and comfortable to use. If you love hot springs, this hot spring facility will not disappoint you. After 1pm, you can use the hot spring facilities even if you are not staying at the hotel.

Nestled beside a serene waterfall, this onsen hotel beautifully blends traditional charm with modern amenities. Despite its classic ambiance, the facilities are well-equipped and maintained with a touch of elegance, ensuring a comfortable and refined stay. The buffet dining is a highlight, offering a rich variety of European and Asian dishes. The sashimi, in particular, stands out for its exceptional freshness, delighting seafood lovers. The dessert selection is another pleasant surprise, with an array of sweet treats that perfectly complement the meal. For those who prefer a more intimate onsen experience, the private rooms with views of the waterfall are a must. The scenery is especially breathtaking in autumn, when golden leaves and crisp air create a poetic, tranquil atmosphere. This hotel is a gem for anyone seeking a blend of tradition, comfort, and natural beauty.

My partner and I stayed in October 2024, a beautiful time of year with the natural surroundings. Breakfast was great but we were particularly impressed with the dinner service. The employee who took care of us during the dinner service was very professional and had great hospitality, unfortunately I do not remember her name.

Great location in the mountains, we had a river view from our room, this hotel is very kid friendly, hot springs are on the property and all you can eat restaurant on level one. Remember this is a traditional style Japanese hotel, so the rooms/bathrooms are on the smaller side.

This is a very large spa hotel. The spa is very nice and relaxing and the restaurant is buffet style with plenty of food dishes from which to select. The room I stayed in was in the lower floor and it was very small. I had to use part of the bed to open my 26-inch suitcase. Other than being small, the room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The room can get warm when the heater is running, but you can open the window to get fresh, cool air or you can turn on the air conditioner. The one thing I did not like was the lack of WiFi in the rooms. The hotel hotel only has WiFi in the lobby. If you are looking for a nice spa hotel and you are in the area, I recommend a visit.

This place has really nice internal and external baths. I've been here about five times, and the staff are great, and the service is great. I have no complaints, and only good things to say about this place. They have great quality control over their food, and their cooks are very friendly people. I will never stop coming back. It's always on the top of my list of places to consider for short stays in the Nagano area.

Nestled in a seemingly unremarkable spot, Switchback TATESHiNA 薪窯料理と山歩き is a hidden gem that offers an array of delightful pizzas, pastas, and desserts alongside a selection of local wines and beers. Despite its casual exterior—complete with a whimsical plastic ice cream cone—the restaurant boasts high-quality ingredients and meticulous preparation by the chef. Guests rave about the friendly staff and their exceptional service, making every visit memorable.
I absolutely love this place. Great food, warm and welcoming atmosphere with the most amazing staff. I had the pizza lunch set on the first visit. Every thing was fresh and locally sourced and delicious 😋. The Neapolitan style pizza with the whole wheat flour was incredible and rivals anything we had eaten in Italy 🇮🇹. On our next visit I had the T-Bone steak from local cattle which was enormous and tasty 🥩. It was cooked to perfection in the pizza oven. It was accompanied by some of the best Mashed potatoes I have ever eaten. The restaurant is cozy and has a lovely friendly atmosphere ideal for an individual, couples or large groups. Kids and pets are welcome. It also has some incredible mountain views. The staff were so warm and welcoming. Highly recommended this place.

🌿 Highly Recommended: Switch Back Restaurant 🌿 During our stay in the area, we ate at Switch Back three times — and every time was excellent! The food was delicious and prepared with great care. We especially enjoyed the Caesar salad, fish carpaccio, oven-roasted vegetables, cheesy pasta, and the panna cotta for dessert — all were outstanding. The service was exceptional — friendly, attentive, and professional — and the atmosphere was relaxed and pleasant. A wonderful place for a tasty Western-style meal with an Italian touch. Highly recommended💫

Although we had driven by this restaurant many times and never noticed it, it was recommended to us by a staff member at our hotel when the onsite restaurant was fully booked, and we were very pleased with the quality of the food they served. Although it looks like quite a casual restaurant from the road (there is even a large plastic ice cream cone outside the door), and the decor looks very family restaurantish, the chef uses very good quality ingredients and is obviously quite serious about his cooking. We started with a selection of pizza oven roasted vegies served with a little bagna cauda sauce, followed by a pork ragout spaghetti (the meat was tender and tasty, but I wish there had been more sauce), and then a delicious mushroom and ham pizza. And the cheap red and white South African wines they serve by the glass were quite decent. In addition, they allow dogs on their deck, and because it was raining quite hard that night, they kindly moved us into a small private room by ourselves. We will certainly return. April 2024 Update: We went for lunch for the first time, and we were pleased to find they have a new ¥2000 lunch set that includes an apetiser plate (see attached photo), 1 pizza or pasta (of 4), and a drink.
