Yulong County, just north of Lijiang, is best known for Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, whose glacier-capped peaks, alpine meadows and cableways offer sweeping views over the Yangtze River valley. Nestled in the heart of Yunnan Province, the Old Town of Lijiang is a captivating destination that transports visitors back in time. This ancient town, established during the late Song and early Yuan Dynasties, boasts over 800 years of history. Its charming cobblestone streets are lined with traditional Naxi houses, creating a picturesque setting enhanced by serene streams and quaint bridges.
We are staying in the old town so spent lotsa time exploring this place which is a maze. I can see many stores selling the same food items too. Very nice place with many pubs.

Lijiang Ancient Town is always lively, especially at night when the streets are crowded with people, food stalls, and music. It is very commercial, but that also means there’s a wide variety of good food, bars, and cultural shows to enjoy. The town blends a traditional setting with a bustling, modern nightlife atmosphere—an interesting fusion that makes it both vibrant and unique.
Michael H — Google review
The town feels like a step back in time. Cobblestone streets wind through clusters of traditional wooden Naxi-style houses, their dark timber frames and curved tiled roofs reflected in narrow canals. Red lanterns hang outside teahouses, and small bridges arch gracefully over the waterways. A must visit when in China! Also, be sure to visit the traditional costume shops to immerse your cultural experience!
Lan N — Google review
I really like exploring the ancient town here, even though I know the buildings are newly renovated and not actually ancient, but the look and feel is there. It’s also super convenient to eat, and things are really cheap (I live in America so cheap is relative). There are unique experiences here that highlight the local culture such as the mushroom hot pot (Lijiang is known for their diverse variety of mushrooms). Because we went during off-peak season it wasn’t overt crowded so it was nice. After dark the lights turn on and there’s street performers (there was even a concert stage performance the day we were there) which is all free to watch.
Jacky L — Google review
Its quite big and its so nice to get lost in the alleys, absorbing the cultural sites and sounds around me. Its beautiful for sure and not as crowded as other ancient towns in Dali. Come in the mornings or late afternoons as by 7pm some alleys r packed with people.

Visited last October — just amazing, no other word for it. The old town has this magical vibe with cobblestone streets, canals, and mountain views that make you feel like you stepped into another world. I even shot my cover of Cry Me a River by JT right there, that’s how inspiring the place was. A must-see if you ever get the chance. 🌄🎶

I recently visited lijiang old town and was pleasantly surprised by how great the overall experience was. The prices were very reasonable, definitely a good bargain for what you get. The environment felt clean, comfortable, and welcoming, making it a nice spot to relax and enjoy your time. Another big plus was how convenient the payment process was. They accept Touch ‘n Go, so paying was quick and easy without any hassle. Overall, I had a really good impression it's affordable, comfortable, and modern. I’d definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for good value and a pleasant atmosphere.

Neon and crowded at night - avoid if you dislike crowds. Lots of street food and a Starbucks even! But I prefer shuhe ancient town more, it's more cafes and low-key and aesthetic.

Lijiang Old Town

Attraction
Park
Lijiang Old Town, with a history of over 800 years, was once a significant political and cultural center. It played a crucial role in trade among various Asian countries. The town's streets are filled with shops offering exquisite handicrafts, reflecting its past prosperity. Navigating the cobblestone streets can be challenging due to their similarity, but venturing away from crowded tourist spots reveals quieter, traditional areas and local-owned restaurants serving authentic cuisine at lower prices.
Ancient city towering over Lijiang.... has its unique character....a wide variety of shops and eateries. But not so convenient for the elderly and physically challenged visitors.
DENNIS T — Google review
This was my second time visiting to Lijiang Old Town (Dayan Ancient Town) and the first was back in 2001 with my family ,where the locals were still living in those houses here. 20years later, this place had became more vibrant, commercial and crowded. But I do understand that the main income source for some of them are from tourism. However, there are still some areas in the old town which was not crowded and worth exploring. I would suggest to take your time to walk away from the few main streets (around Mufu (木府)and Sanyanjing (三眼井) if you would like to explore the other sides of the old town, as it can get very crowded starting in late evening. The tour buses are usually dropping tourists at the north side of the town, where the Large Water Wheel located. You can try out their local delights such as flower biscuits in one of the shop on Sifang street, called MuLaoYe (木老爷鲜花饼). If you have extra time, can go up to Shizi Mountain to have night view. There are plenty of Inns available for stay in the town, but do mind the cobblestone streets might not be friendly to your luggage, do check with your Inn if they provide concierge service.
Quesilla H — Google review
Typical old / ancient town with rows of shops commercialised atmosphere. Some highlights here to take photos include the big water wheels and some plaques / monuments near North gate.
Live L — Google review
Be prepared for crowds, neon lights, squares with multiple musics at the same time....for shure nothing that could be referred as UNESCO protected. Old town is nice in the morning...what happens in the night is a shame. For shure is not a feeling of old town.
Marga W — Google review
Beautiful old town to take a walk. Night time can be very crowded and chaotic, many local tourists clamouring to take photos and pushing. It is much more restful in the daytime/morning. Fewer shops open, but it is much more serene and relaxing to take a walk in. It is beautiful either way. Nighttime it is lit up with spectacular lights. But daytime you see the quiet beauty.
Kimberley H — Google review
Lijiang's charming old town is a maze of waterways and bridges. In my memories there is also a gallery of local people and their fav activities.

Black Dragon Pool (Northwest Gate)

4.3
(424)
National park
Black Dragon Pool, also known as Heilongtan, is a significant water source in Lijiang. It originates from the Yulong Snow Mountain and supplies the town through a network of canals and channels. The pool's streams reach every corner of the town, nurturing willow trees and over 350 unique bridges. This tranquil spot offers a refreshing escape from city life, with views of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and a Buddhist temple on site.
Beautiful! 50RMB to get in from some entrances, BUT THERE ARE PLACES WHERE YOU CAN ENTER FOR FREE WHICH I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Instead of entering near the main attractions, enter at one of the “further” lakes. View where the Lijiang museum is on the map, and look to the road. Walking around there and further from the mai n attractions, there should be a way to get in. As of 6pm right now, multiple are open. Once inside, cross a bridge walk down towards the main attractions. This way, you’ll see the whole park, all the gorgeous lakes, and hopefully save some money lol. I paid and personally think it was worth it. It is beautiful, and if you explore the entire grounds, it could take 4+ hours. There is a 3-story Dongba culture museum (which is mostly in Chinese so I skimmed through) but was extremely interesting. There is a hike of Elephant Mountain, or 象山。 It provides great views of Lijiang, and both the starting and end points are in the park, or you could do it as an out and back, which is how I did it. It took me about 50minutes in total to get to the almost top (heard thunder and turned) and back down. However, I was really pushing and am very very active so doing the full hike could probably be 2+ hours, depending on pace. The hike is all paved and stairs. TLDR it’s really pretty and if you don’t enter from the main gates it could be free. If those gates are closed, come back closer to closing time.

The Black Dragon lake is part of Lijiang Ancient City. It’s a peaceful park with scenic view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the background. Not a must to visit but if you have additional time, take a stroll around this lake is rather therapeutic

The Black Dragon lake is a beautiful area for a romantic stroll. The views from here of the Jade Dragon Snow mountain are fantastic. A nice place for a calm stroll around the lake and spend some quiet time. There is a temple like structure in the middle of the lake and a little bridge which all together makes it a cool scenic place to sit and look at.

Shuhe Ancient Town, located near Lijiang in Yulong Naxi Autonomous County, is a well-preserved historic village with a 1,000-year history. Often called the 'Venice of the Orient' for its canals and stone bridges, Shuhe offers a peaceful alternative to the bustling Lijiang Old Town. The town features traditional Naxi architecture and cultural sites like the Square Market and Sifang Street.
Another small ancient town to explore in Lijiang. It’s definitely not as big as Lijiang old town and there are lesser people too. It’s selling the same things as the old town, so good to compare prices before getting. The toilets are quite so what dirty… so beware!
W T — Google review
Compared to 白沙古镇, this town feels noticeably more deserted, with fewer visitors around. Most tourists, including my family and me, are often worn out after a day of exploring the more popular attractions. Seeking a break, we decided to find a cozy café to relax for a while.
Jonathan K — Google review
Typical ancient town with rows of shops and commercialised atmosphere. Local attractions are also not interesting. While I was there , they had a nightly dance around a bonfire which is a highlight. But this bonfire night dance is also present at other ancient towns :)

Best cottagecore neighborhood with a beautiful canal, lots of cute doggos, and very scenic cafes. Cafe huya is a must go, with a cute cat and wonderful music and great coffee! Also good vegetarian options here!! Sooo aesthetic

This old town was beautiful, but pretty okay as it looked the same as the other touristic old towns within the Dali/Lijiang region. Quite enjoyable but not worth making an extra trip for.
Chin H — Google review
Shuhe Ancient Town was not as impressive as expected. I found it quite commercialized, with many shops and little that felt truly unique or cultural. While it may be pleasant for a short walk, there wasn’t much that stood out for me. Overall, I would rate it 3 stars.

This ancient town is far more superior than 白沙古镇, as the walkways are wider (no cars allowed), have lesser crowd and has its own stature. It was raining when we got there.....

Nestled in a mountain valley at the base of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Jade Water Village holds great cultural and natural significance. This area is home to a sacred water spring revered by the Naxi people and was once inhabited by the renowned American explorer Joseph Rock. The village features traditional Naxi homes, temples, a theater, and exhibits showcasing Dongba culture.

This is actually an unique place to visit. However, lack of people that become guide at this place. Thus, tourist need follow tour or walk alone to explore. Hopefully, management can improve by providing tour guide inside, to explain each unique culture. Another problem faced is, sign board not really guide the way. Be careful of 2 different entrance cause by two different parking space.

Yulong Snow Mountain, located in Lijiang City, is a 5A-level national scenic spot and the southernmost Daxue Mountain in the Northern Hemisphere. It is part of the Yulong Mountain Range and boasts the highest peak, Shanzidou, at 5,596 meters. The area covers 960 square kilometers and offers breathtaking views of snow-covered peaks.
Unfortunately, when I visited it was rainy and cloudy, but I was still lucky to visit the highest peak that the cable car could reach and from there I could climb to the highest peak allowed, luckily the weather was better then. But note that it is necessary to prepare an oxygen tank so as not to be affected by altitude shock
Nguyen V — Google review
Yulong Snow Mountain, also known as Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, is a striking natural landmark near Lijiang. I visited as part of a day trip and found the experience memorable, though there are a few things worth keeping in mind. The mountain is impressive from a distance, especially on a clear day when the snow-covered peaks are visible above the clouds. Getting up to the Glacier Park (around 4,500 meters) requires taking a cable car. The ride itself is smooth, and the views become increasingly dramatic as you ascend. However, the altitude is no joke — several people around me, including myself, felt lightheaded or short of breath even after just a few steps. Bringing an oxygen canister is highly recommended, especially if you’re not used to high elevations. At the top, the snow and scenery are beautiful but expect large crowds and limited time, as staff often move people along quickly. Paths are mostly wooden walkways with railings, but they can get slippery. Dress warmly, even in summer — temperatures were close to freezing when I visited in June. Back at the lower elevations, Blue Moon Valley was a nice surprise. The turquoise-colored water is unusually vivid and makes for a peaceful walk, although parts of the area feel a bit curated for tourists. The site overall is well-maintained, but also heavily commercialized. Long queues, ticket checks, and photo stations are part of the experience. Still, if you’re in the Lijiang area and interested in high-altitude landscapes, it’s worth considering. Just be prepared: the beauty of the place is real, but so is the altitude and the tourism infrastructure built around it.
Van N — Google review
Its a good experience going up 4506m though I felt the side effects of high altitude. The view is magnificent and the other scenic spots below surrounding the mountain is also very scenic.

The primeval forest is very beautiful, with a vision from the grass and high mountains. Areas with green moss and very mysterious. The schedule can take 1 day and should prepare a cold jacket.
Đức B — Google review
The Glacier Park cable car is a thrilling experience, whisking you rapidly up to over 4,500 meters for truly epic, close-up views of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain glaciers. The air is thin, but the views of the snowfields and surrounding peaks are absolutely magnificent. Unfortunately many staff lack of english especially tourist center so it can be confusing, we always talk to them by google translate🤣

31 Oct 2025 云南 Day6. Jade dragon snow mountain 玉龙雪山 When we arrived, it was raining & foggy. A little disappointed with the weather. Nevertheless it was a fun experience using the oxygen & moving like a tortoise taking a step at a time to counter attitude sickness. Glad we made it.

Need oxygen bottles to reach the top where is allowed to by walks, after the cable car landing. Extremely breathtaking only for 200meters more.
William S — Google review
Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great today. Been drizzling here and there which makes it cold & abit miserable. The walk up was abit tedious too.. maybe cause am old. The oxygen tank does help abit on the way up but doesn’t really stop my heart racing lol. Wished the weather was better n less foggy.

Located upstairs, N's Kitchen Upstairs is a cozy cafe that has been a favorite among backpackers for years. It offers a variety of Western dishes such as sandwiches, omelettes, burgers, pasta, and pizza. The cafe also serves breakfast and plenty of drinks. Visitors have praised the quality of the food and highlighted favorites like the omelettes filled with ham and tomatoes, fluffy homemade whole grain bread topped with creamy butter, classic omelette, big burger, and club sandwich.
If you’re looking for Western food near Lijiang Old Town, this is the best (and possibly only) place to pay a visit. A cute small place, ran by a lovely family who speak very good English, too! The food was delicious and the service is super lovely.

Craving for good western food after 5 days in Yunnan. Left the place feeling satisfied. Recommend the thin crust Hawaiian double cheese pizza, monster burger, cabonara pasta (need to add salt according to own taste).

I coicidentally stay nearby, noticed this cute shop upstairs. Tried for our dinner here. Good view & lovely romantic set up of seatings. For us malaysian, it's going to be challenging for us to have same meal everyday everytime, need to have various of choices. So this is a good option. Western food like pizzas, pastas, sandwhiches, burgers, coffee & tea. Even we had fresh orange juice here. The family owner is very friendly and helpful. The downside is the staircase is quite steep, and not suitable for elderly who has movement challenges.

Tiger Leaping Gorge is a natural wonder located in Yunnan's Yulong County, China. It is considered one of the deepest gorges globally and offers breathtaking views of the Yangtze River as it flows through a narrow passage between the Haba Snow Mountain and the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The gorge is part of the Three Parallel Rivers National Park, which also includes Meili and Haba Snow Mountains.
Oh! what a fantastic gorge. I truly recommend to go down the gorge to the viewing platform. You can walk down or take the escalators as well. We walked down, it is not much effort. You can see and feel the force of Jinsha Jiang river. This place can get busy. It is recommended to get ticket in advance.
Vijay J — Google review
This is a hiking place but even if you do not wish to hike , you can still take a public bus from “Lijiang passenger transport terminal” to the entrance to take amazing photos of the Tiger statue & the gushing river! Further, you can arrange for private car transport to go to Tea Horse guesthouse and see the million dollar view of Jade Dragon snow mountain right in front of you ! If you choose to hike , the full hike would require you to first go to 纳西雅阁 Naxi guesthouse , the starting point , to hike the challenging upslope “28 bends” and reach Tea Horse guesthouse / Halfway guesthouse to stay the night, before continuing on to either 1) Tina’s guesthouse to buy tickets to take the public bus to go back Lijiang / Shangri-La or 2) Teacher Zhang’s guesthouse to arrange for private car pick up to go back Lijiang / Shangri-La For half day hike, you would have to arrange private car transport to either Tea Horse / Halfway guesthouse and then hike the rest of the way to either Tina’s or Teacher Zhang guesthouse. Do note some parts of the hike after the waterfall are difficult and you need to be careful. Note: When I visited , many of the scenic spots in the middle of the gorge such as the Gorge rock etc. were closed due to reports of accidents, hopefully they will open again soon… Overall, the scenery is as authentic as you can get and the view of the gushing river and mountain is truly spectacular !
Live L — Google review
This spot is a must-see! The views of the mountains and (aggressive) river stream are really incredible. The one caveat is that climbing up the stairs after you're done sightseeing can be brutal if you're not used to physical activity. They have a lot of benches along the climb back up for resting or you can buy an escalator package to save the energy
Kelly W — Google review
Magnificent scenic tour. Different part of the year has different views and experience. For those who are unable to do stairs, you have to pay for the escalator service. its worth it because its a long way down and up. Wind is really strong so warm clothes are definitely required.

Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡) is one of the deepest and most spectacular river canyons in the world, located on the Jinsha River (a tributary of the Yangtze) in Yunnan, China. Carved between the towering Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain, the gorge is famous for its dramatic cliffs, roaring rapids, and breathtaking hiking trails. Legend says a tiger once leaped across its narrowest point, giving the gorge its name. Adventurers flock here for challenging treks, while the thunderous waves crashing through the narrow passage create an awe-inspiring natural spectacle, making it a must-see for nature lovers and thrill-seekers.
Ts. ( — Google review
This is a Large natural gorge, one of the deepest in the world! Reconmended to pay escalator fees of RMB70 both way. But, u still need to climb 200 staircase down/up! Not wheelchair friendly. Haba Snow Mountain, part of the Haba Mountain Range in Yunnan, China, offers stunning alpine scenery with its snow-capped peaks and alpine forests. The main peak reaches an impressive 5,396 meters and is known for its high-altitude mountain glaciers. This majestic mountain is located near the famous Tiger Leaping Gorge, which is considered one of the longest, deepest, and narrowest gorges globally.
Great trip to the top but be prepared for a further two hundred steps to the summit. Great experience in perfect weather.

Amazing experience. We started from a village in the north east where we found a guide. We hiked up to the base camp (4100) on the first day and then made our bid for the summit on the second day with a full decent back to the village on the same day.

Just playing around in the snow is really fun. Blue Moon Valley is a renowned photography spot with breathtaking mountain scenery, four picturesque lakes, and a strikingly blue river. The valley features dense trees and a clear, long stream running through it known as the White Water River. The river flows over white marble riverbeds, creating a stunning visual contrast against the surrounding landscape. This natural wonder is fed by pure meltwater from high-altitude ice and snow, making it an unpolluted source of refreshment.
The Blue Moon Valley is located at the bottom of the Jade Dragon Snow mountain. It's scenery is very unique and nice. The water looks light blue in color and water is crystal clear. The environment is so ambience, comfortable and natural. Many people are visiting this place and also few wedding couple are taking scenic pictures. It is a must to visit whenever comes to Lijiang Ancient Town.

Baishui River and Blue Moon Valley is actually next to each other. Blue Moon Valley is formed by the melting snow and glaciers from the mountains, which flow down along the cliffs. The water was so transparent! View also nice. Lots of couple came here for shooting wedding photo.

Blue Moon Valley is absolutely stunning the meltwater from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain creates the most intense, unbelievable turquoise blue lakes. It truly feels like walking through a painting. The White Water Terraces and the mountain backdrop make for incredible photos. • Tip: Go on a sunny day for the best color, and consider walking the whole length instead of taking the shuttle for the best views! Can be crowded, but worth it.

Managed to get a glimpse of the Blue Moon Valley’s Jade Wine Lake, Mirror Pond, Blue Moon Lake, and Wave-Listening Lake. Can imagine will be very beautiful like a sapphire as described. Heard the is green, as if it has its own filter. Highly recommend to take the electric bus if you have a schedule to keep.

Blue Moon Valley is a stunning destination with water so vividly blue it feels almost unreal. The scenery is calm yet breathtaking, with the turquoise lake reflecting the surrounding mountains. The 白水台 (White Water Terraces) are especially interesting, forming natural platforms that add a unique touch to the landscape. It’s a great place for both sightseeing and photography, definitely worth including in your Yunnan trip.

Blue Moon Valley is a stunning natural park in the Yulong Naxi Autonomous County of Lijiang, Yunnan, China, located at the foot of the Yulong Snow Mountain. It is famous for its series of vibrant turquoise lakes and waterfalls, which are formed by glacier-meltwater that is rich in minerals. The striking blue color is a result of these minerals reflecting the sky and the backdrop of the snow-covered mountain.

Yunshanping, also known as Dragon Spruce Meadow, offers a stunning view of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The area is home to Ngoc Long Mountain, which consists of 13 large and small peaks, with the highest reaching 5,567m above sea level. Climbing near the top requires careful physical preparation due to cold climates and potential snow or rain.
This is definitely a must-visit if you are interested in landscape photography. The only downside is that there are too many tourists to avoid. However, you can choose to wander a bit off the path, as we did, and using long lenses can help isolate your subject. Be sure to check which month is the best to visit in order to enjoy clear skies and avoid the rainy season.

(Translated by Google) This small cableway runs from about 3,100 meters above sea level to about 3,600 meters. Although it is a little lower than the main cableway in Glacier Park, it has a more forest wonderland style - the sea of trees, fog, and mountains are stacked one after another. The whole process is like flying in the clouds. It is so poetic! After arriving at Yunshanping, you can stroll on the picturesque trails, watching the snow-capped mountains looming in the sky, and the trees are covered with ice crystals. The subtle details of nature are so addictive. I took it at noon. The sun shone through the treetops, and the light and shadows in the forest seemed to be dancing. It was so beautiful that I wanted to record it as a souvenir. The best part is: ✔️ Suitable for those who don't want to climb too high or are afraid of heights ✔️ The scenery is as good as Glacier Park, but there are fewer people and you can have your own pace ✔️ Combined with the main cableway itinerary, you can create a perfect walking route of Yunshanping + Glacier for a whole day ⚠️Reminder: ✔️ At an altitude of 3,600 meters, the temperature is obviously lower, so be sure to bring more warm clothes ✔️ The nearby altitude is high, and there will occasionally be heavy fog and low visibility. It is recommended to reserve time to take more photos ✔️ The small cableway has limited tickets, so remember to make reservations in advance during peak season!

Yunshanping is truly a breathtaking place to visit. A vast grassland stretches out in front, with the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain rising in the distance. The combination of open fields, clear skies, and snow-capped peaks creates an astonishing and unforgettable view. Standing here, you can feel both the grandeur and serenity of nature. It’s an excellent spot for photography and a peaceful walk—highly recommended for anyone visiting Yunnan.

Yufeng Temple, situated at the southern foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, is a small lamasery with a rich history dating back to 1756. Despite its age, the temple still boasts stunning courtyards and blooming trees that add to its serene ambiance. The scenic surroundings are considered divine gifts, enhancing the spiritual experience for visitors.

(Translated by Google) YuFeng Temple (China Yunnan, Lijiang, Yulong Naxi Autonomous County, 玉湖段白沙乡 邮政编码: 674101) is a temple that compiles the unique Dongba culture of the Naxi people. The Naxi people used their own hieroglyph, Dongba. It is still used to this day. The priest of Dongpo religion Dongpamanshinwon, which enshrines all the gods believed in by Dongpa and Dongpa religion, is located on the site of a famous site in Baesan Imsu on the hillside of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. In the 10,000Gods Garden, the philosophical world of the Naxi people, including Totem Buddhism and Taoism, is carved into a brilliant artistic masterpiece of Dongpo Buddhism, which plays a role in understanding the Dongpo religion of the Naxi people. Two huge totem poles stand at the main gate and the 240m long God Chart Road. There are two god gates and the two highest god staffs of the Dongpa. The left side of the axis is the god's area, and the right side is the ghost area, so there is a division between humans and gods and ghosts. It shows the relationship well.  It is interesting that Eros Park exists, and I think that human life is similar everywhere. It is also surprising that ghosts have existed since ancient times. The white sand mural, Naxi Tokyo music, and Dongba characters are rare treasures that symbolize the Naxi people and are human assets that must be preserved forever. I thought: It is about 20km away from Baeksu River in Namwolgok, and the entrance fee is 20 won. (Original) 동파 만신원(YuFeng Temple.
