Place of worship
Mahamuni Pagoda, located in southern Mandalay near the airport, is a revered temple complex and an important Buddhist pilgrimage site in Myanmar. The main hall houses a giant 3.8m Buddha statue adorned with gold and precious stones, which only men can approach to cast gold on the statue. The pagoda also contains two much-venerated images, including the Mahamuni Image brought from Rakthine State in 1784.
Wonderful place in Mandalay where rich in culture and you can visit the museum in a separated building. Feel so calm and happy to be here during new year time.
Pattama D — Google review
This is a major pilgrimage site, located southwest of Mandalay, Myanmar. The Mahamuni Image, originally came from Arakan is enshrined in this temple and is highly venerated. According to legend, Buddha himself visited the Dhanyawadi city of Arakan in 554 BC. King Sanda Thuriya requested that an image be cast of him. Once complete, the Buddha breathed upon it, and thereafter the image took on his exact likeness.
CK C — Google review
Beautiful place but very badly damaged during the recent earthquake. Reconstruction however is in full swing, but large parts of the temple complex are currently not accessible. Also the fish pond got a big hit during the EQ, and all the fish have died. Very friendly staff who are happy to explain things to you. Despite the damage still very impression, don't forget to look up once in a while as the ceilings have the most beautiful elements of the whole temple.
DS D — Google review
The Pagoda is clean and exquisite. You can pray and donate. You can also feed to fish and tortoises at garden in this pagoda area. Be aware that one cannot wear shorts or skirts, dresses to visit. Bring a longyi for ladies or long pant. I didn't see any panhandlers near pagoda area at this time and people are no longer bothered for this.
Dr R — Google review
This is an amazing temple to be in. There is a K5000 entrance fee for foreigners. This temple has got so much gold in it's interior and exterior that it looks so magnificent. Here, you get to witness devout worshippers apply gold leaf on the buddha statue. There's a video live stream as well as women are not allowed near it. There's also a bronze statue museum on-site with English explanations and an art gallery which details the faith in Myanmar. Would definitely recommend a visit here.
Samuel S — Google review
My first stop in Mandalay was here at Maher Myat Muni Pagoda. As always you must leave your shoes, etc. and walk barefoot. You walk past many merchants selling goods before getting to the pagoda. Here you must pay camera fees, but they don't apply to mobile phone cameras. Here only males can enter the central area with the big Buddha statue. I was ask by a local woman to present an offering on here behalf which is common.
Blair — Google review
Wow, what an interesting place. Unfortunately, you can't actually see the gold leaf Buddha, but they do have pictures of it at various years going back to 1935 so you can see the transition as it gets more and more gold leaves on it. The surrounding building is pretty impressive too. It seems to be a very holy place for people so please be respectful here.

Shweinbin Monastery, located in Mandalay, Myanmar, is a serene and secluded retreat known for its exquisite wooden architecture and intricate carvings. Built in the late 19th century by wealthy Chinese jade merchants, the central building stands on tree-trunk poles and features detailed engravings on balustrades and roof cornices. The monastery's rich history adds to its allure as one of the city's most beautiful tourist attractions.
Very Peaceful place, No Entrance fee is Good 👍 better take a plastic bag to put your shoes because shoes are not allow to wear in the Monastery, surrounding have no restaurant or shop, better let your Taxi wait for you.

This Temple don't have to pay entrance fee. Is quite big and is free to move around. They don't even collect that 200mmk toilet fee. You enjoy the quiet atmosphere there. Local go to the big Mediation Hall to get peace of mind. The temple can only see from outside. Is much better then visiting Shrenandaw Temple which have to pay 15,000 to enter and 500 for toilet. See nothing special. Same type of wood curving as the Shweinbin Temple.

Built in 1895 by a pair of wealthy Chinese jade merchants, this carved teak monastery is well beloved by tourists and locals. The central building stands on tree-trunk poles and the interior has a soaring dark majesty. There were beautiful intricate detail carvings on the walls, doors and even on the roof all over the architecture.
CK C — Google review
An ornately carved temple that must have been spectacular in its heyday but now in need of restoration. Its surrounded by the old dwellings of the resident monks, but its eerily quiet.Note the sign to remove "slippers" (shoes), but then you walk around on the ground barefoot - unusual vs only entering a prayer hall.On the one side, the wooden gates at the top of the staircases are open and you can go to the first level and enter the prayer hall upstairs.
Vincent O — Google review
Beautiful monastery, the woodwork is exquisite. Very calm and peaceful place. Thankfully there was not many people there, so it didn't disturb the serenity of the monastery.
Eva P — Google review
Impressive and aesthetically pleasing structure. Very relaxing, we were there at 3pm on a Monday and were absolutely alone. But please, send somebody with a hammer to re-nail all those planks, nails are protruding a bit of everywhere and it isn't pleasant as you have to walk bare feet there...
Matthias200587 — Google review
Quiet but beautiful, not just the wooden building but also the path around it. Small but really nice atmosphere.

There are three wooden monasteries in mandalay, shwenandaw, bagaya and shweinbin monastery, all the three monasteries are wooden temples and very similar to each other. This is my personnel view and my opinion only.If you visit either one of the monastery, there would be no need to visit the other two monastery, the best of the three would be Shwenandaw monastery which is quite close to the palace and within the city centre

King Galon Gold Leaf Workshop

4.1
(324)
Manufacturer
When visiting Mandalay, a trip to the King Galon Gold Leaf Workshop is a must for anyone interested in traditional craftsmanship and local culture. This workshop showcases the intricate process of creating gold leaf, from beating and cutting to packing. The pure gold leaves produced here are used in various ways, such as adorning Buddha statues and crafting lacquerware.
When you travel through Myanmar and visit pagodas you will have come across gold leaf vendors. This workshop produced them. Staff explains the extremely laborious and time-consuming process of turning gold strips into super-thin gold leaves and of manufacturing bamboo paper. The leaflet for 1,000 MKK describes both processes and it comes with a gold leaf.
René S — Google review
Traditional gold workshop, where you can examine how gold plates are being flattened to be used for decoration or offerings later on. You can see the craftmen working with hammers, and the staff is exceptionally kind and helpful, speaking fluent English. They will tell you about the work process and the possible uses of the golden leafs - of course you can buy many different jewelry, decoration or simply gold.
Gergő S — Google review
Quite an interesting place where you can see the gold leaf making. From the process of making bamboo sheets to making gold leaf and then preparing stacks, all of it can be seen here. You can shop some souvenirs as well.
Nidhi G — Google review
Interesting place to learn about the gold leaf making process. The staff are friendly and one of them put gold leaf on our forehead while we were visiting the workshop. I guess it means good luck!
Ceci T — Google review
Very interesting place to visit and staff were both informative and helpful. Bought a small piece of jewellery as a memory of Mandalay.

Very interesting place in central Mandalay. This workshop specialize in handmade traditional golden leaf production, which are used in covering different things especially Budda figures in stupas and monasteries (in the traditional way by Myanmar's people). However You can find other souvenirs covered in gold. The nice place to see if You come by this district (there are other similar workshop in this area).
Cezary K — Google review
A fascinating look at an age old technique for making gold leaf. It will blow your mind when you see the effort required to produce one tiny sheet of gold leaf and then you think of the sheer volume of gold leaf needed for just one pagoda or huge Buddha statue.
Jane W — Google review
You will see how difficult to make the gold leaves, it is physically intensive.

Shopping mall
Diamond Plaza is a spacious shopping complex that offers a variety of experiences for visitors. It houses numerous apparel retailers, a well-stocked basement-level supermarket, and a movie theater for entertainment. The mall is known for its gem and amber shops, offering better prices and quality compared to other locations in Yangon. Visitors can find valuable gems such as Ruby and Sapphire from Mogok, as well as Hpakant Jade, with the opportunity for bargaining to secure great deals.
Good place for shopping, the supermarket is good and it has everything you need. Good selection on food.
Carlos — Google review
The mall is nearly deserted, save for the supermarket at the basement that is well stocked. The rest of it seems like 2 or 3 shops that are open, but are not lit, while everything else is shuttered. We were surprised that one lift was working to take us to the 2nd floor where there were washrooms. Ocean supermarket sells everything from spices to daily necessities, liqour as well as furniture. Things seem reasonably priced. It was still open as at 7pm.
Joseph — Google review
The only great shops are at the basement level with Ocean Super Market.
Hann — Google review
Fantastic place for gem hunters with lots of shops and booths. For amber lovers it is like heaven as Amber Beauty sells the best amber in Myanmar at very nice prices considering the extremely high quality usually unseen elsewhere.
Akbar K — Google review
Place is run down after just a few years of being open. There is a nice grocery store in the basement (ocean) and a modern movie theater on the top floor.Other than those 2 places, the mall isn't worth a visit
Zach B — Google review
In a city where shopping is not exciting, Diamond Plaza tries to impress locals by trying to emulate Western style shopping malls. What it manages to do most is to copy the pricing practiced in those malls. Rents must be high because items are pricier than elsewhere in Myanmar and many shops are closed. When I visited, an important demographic that could afford the mall's shops was missing, namely foreign tourists.
Georges Y — Google review
Nice little ground floor with some fake diamond jewellery shops, but the floors above 1st floor are mostly empty. You don't miss anything if you don't come. Down in basement is big Ocean supermarket where has just about any daily thing you may need.

Zay Cho, also known as Zegyo Market, is a historic marketplace spanning 12 acres in Mandalay. The market offers a wide variety of goods including local foods, clothing, electronics, traditional silk longyi, velvet slippers, silverware, lacquerware and jewelry. The name 'Zay Cho' translates to 'cheap rice' in Bamar and reflects the bargain items available at the market.
A bustling local market where you can find everything—from fresh produce and spices to traditional Burmese longyis (sarongs) and handicrafts. Great for souvenir shopping, but be prepared to bargain! Try the street food stalls for authentic Mandalay snacks like mont lone yay baw (sticky rice balls).
Nay O — Google review
Come here in the morning and you can try the various sweets that are sold just outside of the market. The brown sweets made of string beans and toddy palm sugar were not too sweet and had a consistency similar to honeycomb. The market itself felt much more relevant for local customers than Scotts Market in Yangon.
René S — Google review
A real immersion in a huge local market: inside a bazar where you you can find everything (from China). Outside on the plaza, a food market with street food. During 3 h, I have seen only local people. Nov 2019
Pe — Google review
If you want an authentic local market experience then definitely visit this place. It can be very intense as there are many people there especially on the weekends. The roads are pretty narrow and usually should only be a one way street but somehow they get trucks up and down the street both ways. But even if you're not that interested in buying anything it's well worth just walking through and making your way through an interesting maze of paths.
Mel A — Google review
Iteresting market, goods ranging from clothes, textiles, fruit, vegetables to hardwear equipment. The market is really busy so try not to get runed over by a bike. Overall an interesting place to go to in mandalay

This is the best place to shop in Myanmar for fabric. This is a local market not necessarily for tourists items. If you're looking for Burmese longyi's I recommend getting them here. The prices were better than in Bagan and Yangon. Most shop keepers I met did not speak English. I used Google translate and a calculator to communicate and negotiate prices. There is an upstairs sectors with people who can mend and sew to finish the longyi's. Bring cash as debit and credit cards won't be accepted.

The restaurant is known for its quick service and vegetarian-friendly options. Visitors can enjoy a variety of authentic Burmese teas at affordable prices while indulging in dishes such as Mee Shay and Mont Ti.
An absolute delight of a place when it comes to food! We reached at about 7:30 am and the entire restaurant was bustling with people. Quick turn around time and serving great food is definitely their strength. I loved the fact that they catered to my vegetarian meal requirements and I thoroughly enjoyed Mee Shay and Mont Ti along with Burmese tea and Nan Pyar. Reasonable pricing but maybe expensive from local point of view.

Lovely cafe with local beverages, snacks, and other foods. They have an English menu as well. Prices are higher than the average cafe, but the place is well-appointed with indoor and some outdoor seating. The place is often busy and frequented by local families. Service is quick and welcoming.

AMAZING TEA! They have a blend for all types of tea drinkers, from bitter to sweet and milky to none at all. Very authentic Burmese cuisine at very affordable prices (Their noodles cost only 2 USD). The fish broth noodles (with the egg in the picture) was a little too strong for my taste but my friends loved it. The chicken curry was really good. Overall a good experience mostly due to their tea

Koffee Korner is a trendy restaurant in Mandalay that offers a unique dining experience. By day, it appears to be a normal eatery, but at night, the ambiance transforms with blue-hued lights and an aquarium inside. The restaurant serves European cuisine along with excellent coffee and desserts. The quiet and charming surroundings are complemented by green trees. It offers basic ice cream flavors and fun beverages, while the waitstaff is knowledgeable and provides great service.
Nice western style place with outdoor and indoor seating. Loved their pizza, chicken chop, their juices and coffee. Their asian selection of fried rice also not too bad. Their aircond is superb and wifi better than average. Waiters can speak pretty decent english and service speed was quite all right. Drinks okay but food was priced a bit high. Comfortable environment and music was not bad.

Chill atmosphere with basic ice cream flavours that remind you of your childhood. Mango Yogurt smoothie is okay, could have been nicely sweeter to my liking. Fun beverages menu. Our waitress is very knowledgable and serves very well which is quite rare in restaurants in Mandalay. Good hygiene. Lastly, it makes me happy that the fish tank is well maintained and taken good care of. Tells you about how they treat the business.

We loved going there because they had Kirin beer. The setting is nice to relax but the service can sometimes be slow. The dishes are OK but sometimes too pricey for their quality.
Sarah B — Google review
A relaxing atmosphere, easy music, chilled aircon and eager-to-please staff. Iced cappuccino freshly brewed and the tuna sandwich nice, but needed some chilly sauce, served separately. A wide range of drinks and food menu (salads, soups, pastas, chicken, pizzas, meats). Armchair seating so not like a restaurant. Outdoor seating too. Prices to suite the upmarket standard
Vincent O — Google review
As far as Mandalay prices go for coffee shops, Koffee Korner runs decently priced drinks and it has a large selection of hot and cold beverages. I didn’t get to try the food, but the seats are comfortable and the Wi-Fi is decent. Add to those the choice of indoor air conditioned seating or outdoor tables under the trees, and you have a really good spot for relaxing and talking with friends. Location is easy to get to from the central Palace and the decor is old-world, if not a little bit dated. I also like how there are electrical outlets available at many tables; something you don’t see in other, stingier places. However, I give it only 2 stars because they charge tax AND service charges separately on the bill, but they don’t inform the customer in the menus. Sorry, but f**k you, Koffee Korner! This is a nationwide scam among stingy and devious restaurants.

Service is excellent, as always in Myanmar. Restaurant decor is tasteful. Inside is airy and cool. Chilled out low music makes the place very relaxing. I ate the spicy fried rice and vegetables (with madatory fried egg) - delicious. The banana smoothie is outstanding. Mogok Daw Shan Noodle is a charming street food spot that captures the essence of local dining in Myanmar. With an English menu adorned with enticing pictures, it’s easy for travelers to navigate their vegetarian options. The highlight here is undoubtedly the Shan noodles, a delightful dish hailing from the Shan State, which I had the pleasure of trying for the first time. The bustling kitchen buzzes with friendly staff who are eager to serve delicious meals at incredibly affordable prices.
Good street corner restaurant in Mandalay. It’s very cheap and the food is tasty. It’s an open air restaurant with mostly local people there. We had a tea leaves salad, a crispy pork noodle soup and a plate of dumplings. Everything was very good and tasty. You should definitely check it out !

Big kitchen with many friendly people. We tried the noodle soup (which i got with egg instead of meat) for 1500 Kyat and naan bread with beans (400 Kyat). Veggie curry with naan bread (3000 Kyat), dumplings (4000 Kyat) and fresh pineapple juice (1000 Kyat). The dumplings (freshly made by four people) and the curry you can easily share, since the portions are big. Everything was delicious. Tourists get the menu with English/Chinese translation and food pictures. Highly recommended!

Guests rave about dishes like roasted cauliflower, vibrant salads, comforting carrot ginger soup, and hearty vegetable lasagna—all praised for their exceptional flavors.
Blew away our expectations. The food was insanely good. We had the roasted cauliflower, colorful salad, carrot ginger soup, and vegetable lasagna and all we're fantastic! Beers and wine are unbelievable prices and the dessert was also wonderful. Normally when we travel we only eat local good, but every now and then it's ok to that yourself with whatever you want ;)

Nice comfortable ambience without the usual bistro smell but points deducted from trying to look contemporary with unpolished, untiled cement floor. The clock on the wall stopped at 11.40 and nothing done to resume. This shows that the staff is not bothered about image at all. Beef steak is pricey considered it is not a fine dining restaurant and trying to rival that of a hotel. Tested a pork cordon bleu with cheddar, blue cheese and French fries. I was expecting a pork chop when it arrived looking like a wrap. It was nice but still pricey considered the small portion. Will visit again to try the beef steak another time.

By FAR the best western food in town. Ok, prices are high (15k kyat for main dish) but i can only imagine what it takes to deliver such quality in Mandalay. Really great, high quality food and not just one of these "european restaurants". I highly recommend.

Great coffee, decoration was fabulous, cozy place and nice staff but didn't have much veg options.

Food is ok, and service is good. At the time we went, around lunch time, there were no other customers so service was very fast. Im not sure how is the service when the establishment is full. The toilets are also very clean

Untypical stylish restaurant with very good (western-style) food. Prices and Quality are higher than other restaurants in the area.
Stefan S — Google review
Honestly a very nice place to get Western food. Sure it is expensive compared to local prices elsewhere but the food tasted great and was a great place to satisfy our European needs for one night. Remember the 15% taxes. Starterd for the both of us, main courses, fresh juices and a alcoholic beverage ended up on 46$

For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Kuthodaw Pagoda, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Golden Duck Mandalay. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Kuthodaw Pagoda, located at the foot of Mandalay Hill, is a significant Buddhist temple and pilgrimage site. Built in 1857 by King Mindon, it features a gilded pagoda surrounded by 729 shrines, each containing a marble slab inscribed with ancient Pali language teachings. This collection of slabs is known as the 'World's Largest Book,' showcasing the entirety of the Buddhist canon.

This is a Buddhist stupa, located in Mandalay, Burma, that contains the world's largest book. It lies at the foot of Mandalay Hill and was built during the reign of King Mindon in 1857. The "book" consists of 729 marble slabs, each inscribed with a page of the Tripitaka, the complete Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism. Each slab is housed in its own small shrine.
CK C — Google review
The largest stone book in the world is located in Kuthodaw Paya ("Pagoda of Great Merit"). It consists of 729 stone steles with Buddhist canons, that form the complete text of the Tripitaka. Each stella is located in a separate pavilion. Continuous reading will take approximately 450 days. 2,500 monks gathered in Mandalay in 1871 for the Fifth Buddhist Council, where they spent 5 months examining, collating and writing down the sacred texts of the Tripitaka. They decided to immortalize these sacred texts in stone, as a souvenir for posterity, and began construction, which lasted for 8 years. The craftsmen carved only 10 lines a day. In 1900 the text from the stone steles was printed on paper resulting in 38 volumes of 400 pages each.

Amazing historical landmark 👍 Its name translated literally means Royal Merit. It contains 729 tone-inscription caves, each containing a marble slab inscribed on both sides with a page of text from the entire book in Buddhist text. You will find a magnificent tree with the compounds. Truly amazing! Just remember that it's a space of prayer so you are required to dress modestly and remove your shoes. Ladies, no shorts or mini skirts! ⚠️

Very neat set of small white buildings, each with a stone "page" of the largest book in the world inside. You have to walk from building to building to read it. The buildings themselves are very cool to look at even if you can't read Myanmar because there are so many of them.
Kimberly B — Google review
Beautiful pagoda with an interesting history. The Buddhist scriptures in each of its many stupas were once etched with gold and gemstones, but the British looted this all when they came through. It is still a beautiful place. Some rows of stupas are better maintained than others. The marble floor tiles help keep one's feet cool while the sun blazes, as do some leafy trees. Women who enter can borrow a longyi for free at the entrance. There is no entrance fee for tourists.

Kuthotaw Pagoda is an amazing place. King Mindon had built the pagoda as part of the traditional foundations of the new royal city, Mandalay in 1857. He convened and lead the Fifth Buddhist Synod in 1871. The king wanted to leave a great work of merit by having the Tipitaka set in stone for posterity. The construction began in 1860 and the inscriptions were opened to the public on 4th May 1868. They were arranged in neat rows within three enclosures, 42 in the first, 168 in the middle and 519 in the third. One more stands at the southeast corner of the first enclosure making it 730, and this stone records how it all came into being. Thirty four brick rest houses (Zayats) stood all around except on the east side of the pagoda.

Nestled in the southeast of Myanmar, Sandamuni Pagoda is a captivating destination that draws visitors to Mandalay. This stunning Buddhist stupa, built in 1874 by King Mindon Min, features a magnificent gilded zedi and an impressive array of slender whitewashed stupas. It honors Crown Prince Kanaung and showcases the largest iron Buddha statue in Myanmar, known as Sandamani.
After visiting so many pagoda I am starting get enough of it , but this one still worth to see .

Sandamuni Pagoda in Mandalay is a really peaceful and beautiful place. The golden pagoda in the center is surrounded by so many white stupas, which look amazing. Each stupa holds a marble slab with Buddhist texts, similar to Kuthodaw Pagoda nearby. The whole place feels calm and quiet, perfect for taking photos or just sitting and enjoying the atmosphere.
Tibor — Google review
Beautiful site with countless pagodas. It’s free to walk in but you can also leave a donation if you wish to. I would recommend visiting early in the morning or late afternoon before sunset to avoid the heat. Toilets are available outside the complex, a short 2 minute on the right hand side of the main gate. There are also plenty of food stalls at the exit. There is enough place to park a car outside.
Ray D — Google review
Beautiful pagoda located near the northeast corner of the Golden Palace at Mandalay. It is known for its multitude of white stupas that give it a very unique look. It was built in the late 19th century as a memorial to a young prince who was assasinated during a rebellion.
Pushan S — Google review
A sea of whitewashed stupas sets Sandamuni Pagoda apart from the thousand other pagodas that you will likely visit in Mandalay. If you take your time to observe the architecture, you will be rewarded with intricate details, linear perspectives and geometric patterns. A favorite place for marriage pictures, the brightly colored clothes of brides-to-be will contrast with the stark whiteness of the pagodas. Monks in saffron robes compete for your attention. During the visit, I did not mind being barefoot because I felt like I was floating on a magic carpet.
Georges Y — Google review
It is a beautiful pagoda which is covered with thousands of pagodas ! Actually the main golden pagoda is surrounded with 1700 of white little little pagados and it is a beautifull sight !! You will also get a areal view of this pagodas from mandalay hill !! And it is must visit
Travellers S — Google review
This is actually a better sightseeing experience than Mandalay Hill due to the fact it sees far less visitors. Not much shade around the large central stupa, so go earlier in the day to beat the heat.
Megaworld A — Google review
This is similar to the nearby Kuthodaw pagoda because of the large number of whitewashed ancillary stupas, also each containing a tablet of scriptures - 1774 in total! Each slab measuring 1.68 meters tall and 1.07 meters wide! Wow. The pagoda houses the largest iron Buddha image in Burma, named the Sandamani image, cast in 1802 from of almost 41,000 pounds of iron, it is now covered with a layer of gold. Its difficult to get a true perspective of the number and e extent of these buildings. Aerial photos or Google Maps view helps.

Kyauktawgyi Pagoda, located near Mandalay Hill, was finished in 1878 and houses a remarkable marble Buddha statue carved from a single block of marble sourced from the nearby Sagyin mines. The image's creation was completed in 1865, with the king participating in the dedication ceremony.
It's a very old and beautiful pagoda near the mandalay Royal Palace and foot of mandalay hill. Has lots of small and big shrines. The architecture is very beautiful. Also has a big temple festival

Kyauktawgyi Pagoda in Mandalay is a peaceful and less crowded temple worth a quick visit. The highlight is a massive marble Buddha statue, which is beautifully carved and impressive in size. The atmosphere is calm, making it a nice place to take a break from the busier sites in the city. It’s not the most famous pagoda in Mandalay, but if you’re nearby, it’s worth stopping by.
Tibor — Google review
In a country with a million pagodas to visit, you need to look for distinguishing marks to differentiate between them. I remember Kyauktawgyi Pagoda because it had a big Buddha statue made of white marble. The statue's nails are also painted with gold leaf. The second mark is a dark blue and ornate gong in place of the classical bell. Looking at my pictures, I also remember very long and beautiful corridors connecting various parts of the temple.

Lookouts
Mandalay Hill, a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site in Myanmar, is located to the northeast of the Mandalay Royal. It is surrounded by nine satellite hills with names like The Golden Hill and The Silver Hill. Standing at 230 meters above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the city and is a popular spot for watching sunrise or sunset over the plains. The hill features numerous pagodas and monasteries, making it a niche and divine destination in Southeast Asia.
Mandalay Hill offers a fantastic experience with breathtaking views, especially at sunset. You can go up by taxi or walk, which takes around 25-30 minutes. It’s worth arriving at least half an hour before sunset to enjoy the scenery and spend some time meditating in the hilltop sanctuary. The walking route passes through several shrines, so wearing shoes that are easy to take on and off is a good idea. The path is not isolated but does pass some vendors and typical pagoda-style stalls. Once at the top, the panoramic views are stunning, and the sunset is truly magical. It’s worth waiting for the full experience before heading back. After sunset, it’s safer and more convenient to take a taxi down, as the area is not very secure in the dark. Alternatively, start your descent just before sunset while there’s still enough light. Mandalay Hill is a must-visit, but plan your timing carefully for the best experience.

Mandalay Hill is an awe-inspiring site that offers a profound spiritual and panoramic experience. The ascent up the 1,729 steps is rewarded with breathtaking views of Mandalay, the Ayeyarwady River, and the surrounding landscapes. Sunset at Mandalay Hill is particularly enchanting, with the sun casting a warm glow on the golden stupas. It's a place of tranquility, reflection, and stunning vistas, making it a must-visit attraction for travelers exploring Mandalay and seeking a deeper connection with Myanmar's heritage.

As a foreigner, this has to be one of the most breathtaking places I've ever been to. I don't think I've ever seen anything more interesting than the Mandalay hill.♥️♥️
Thet P — Google review
From memory, as we were told at the entrance, it is about 1700 steps to the top but this made the climb all the more worthwhile! The view is spectacular right across Mandalay. The cost of entry was tiny although they could have been a little more transparent about it. There are benches at intervals for those that need a rest on the way up and drinks vendors selling water and other drinks. There are other interesting temples to see in the vicinity of Mandalay Hill after you've walked back down. If you want to learn about the country you're visiting, you have to make the effort! We recommend it.
Ewan K — Google review
We were lucky enough to arrive in the city and to be transported right away in this amazing temple. The sunset light was the best thing and all the colours of the walls and decorations irradiated brightness and sparkles. The monks were super nice, they came talking to us (to practice their English as we later discovered), they were curious and kind. Amazing experience :-)
Massimo M — Google review
Very nice place to climb. It takes from 40 minutes to 1 hour approximately depends on you. There are many pagodas on the way and local markets where you can stop. The hike should be done barefoot so be prepared to end with your feet very dirty. The views from the top are very amazing and the atmosphere very good. If you are very tired to return by walk, you can take a local transportation that takes you to the bottom of the hill, the price is 1000 kyats per person.

Perched atop Mandalay Hill, Su Taung Pyae Pagoda is a stunning ancient structure that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding town and beyond. This five-tiered pagoda, believed to house a strand of the Buddha's hair, dates back to the 18th century and features an impressive gilded stupa at its peak. The journey to reach it involves a leisurely hike up a staircase marked by the iconic double-lion gate near Kuthodaw Pagoda.
This is a beautiful Pagoda that is situated in a strategic spot on top of Mandalay Hill. If you want to take advantage of the views on the city and the surrounding areas, choose to go early in the morning to avoid the haze that comes after the weather warms up during the day. The building features intricate designs that use mirrors of many colors.

We went up to the peek to see the sunset. Since we arrived already at 3pm we were able to enjoy the view by ourselves before the place got crowded. Its nice to walk up there, which takes about half an hour. If you can’t walk that many stairs, you can go by car or take a taxi.
V.Ruettimann — Google review
One of the nicest Pagoda we visited. Here is also a very famous sunset point, which is nice but if I had to choose I would prefer the Ubein point. Several monks were here to have a chat with tourist, which is always very instructive and interesting.
Jerome V — Google review
Plenty of temple cats and a great view of Mandalay make this a favourite spot for sunset shots. Walking up the stairs from the bottom can be a bit exhausting especially if you take the steeper Western staircase. But there is also a lift nearby the car park if you happen to drive up.

I rented a bycicle to to get up here, it was heavy ride but the view is amazing enough to feel that it was worth it! I like to see from high ground what around me is. If you arrive to the top you can take a long stairs up or an elevator if you are too tired. See around Mandalay and the Naga statues.

You can't miss it if you stay in Mandalay. Very beautiful sunset with a peacful environment, you can sit down at the floor or stand at the side to enjoy the moment. But, you gonna prepare that you need to take the escalator uphill without shoes and have to borrow their slipper for the toilet, you have to pay 200kyat for toilet fee.

Hit and miss for the dishes. Have definitely tasted better Thai fare in any part of Thailand. Was hoping for a comparable taste and did not meet my expectations -- seeing that I came here from a blog review of top Mandalay restaurants. Having said that, the restaurant is a cosy comfortable one.

Went here for lunch today expecting great things. I have eaten incredible Thai food before, both in Thailand and the West, and I have to say this disappointed me. I was expecting more from the reviews. Aside from the taste, I ordered a prawn hot pot, and that's exactly what I got. A singular prawn in a bowl of soup! I complained and they told me I could have two prawns if I wanted. Seriously?!...What a joke. I also got the fried Catfish with ginger and chilli, which tasted ok, but it had no spice at all and there was more bone than fish. I also ordered the fish cakes to start, and I only ate one and left the rest. Would definitely not go here again. Overpriced and below average in my opinion.

We had dinner here and were with one other couple the only guests. Prices vary roughly between 4200 and 7300 for a meal, plus 1000 kyat for rice while the food quality didn't impress us. The pre-cut chicken pieces had lots of yearns (hard, similar to bones, but a bit softer) in it, so that it was necessary to chew carefully and spit parts out again. Taste was okay, but not great.

We had family & friends dinner here for our engagement party. Food taste was on point, quality was amazing. Service was good. Some items could be a bit overpriced. But I was happy to pay for the foods I got. Nice environment to chill. The big fan outdoor was a bit annoying. The prices are not in the menu and had to ask the price for each item which made me quite uncomfortable. I would come back again. And hope they will indicate the prices in the menu in the future.
