Bhaktapur Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the heart of the city and boasts a 1427 CE palace, numerous temples, statues, and intricate gates. The square is a treasure trove of stone art, metal art, wood carving, and terracotta art. Visitors can marvel at architectural showpieces like the Golden Gate and the statue of King Bhupatindra Malla atop stone monoliths.
For foreigners, please purchase your entrance ticket to Bhaktapur and keep it with you to enter other places. The square was very close to other temples and square. Lots to taxis to catch rides on and some traditional clothing experience was available nearby. History of 6 Castle was very fascinating, and there are three museums within and nearby. All the artworks, wood carvings, and stone carvings were very cool, and you can also take some nice photos.

Absolutely stunning! Bhaktapur Durbar Square is a beautifully preserved historic site full of ancient temples, intricate wood carvings, and vibrant local culture. Walking through the square feels like stepping back in time. It's clean, peaceful, and rich with Newari heritage. A must-visit for anyone exploring Nepal!

All of a sudden, you find yourself transported to another era. Few places in Kathmandu Valley can boast such an exquisitely preserved relic of the past, still very much alive in the present and destined to endure far into our shared future. Not just buildings but also culture and faith. Bhaktapur Durbar Square is a living museum, where ancient temples and palaces stand not as mere relics but as active centers of worship and culture. The intricate wood carvings, towering pagodas, and sacred courtyards whisper stories of centuries gone by, while daily rituals and festivals breathe life into these age-old stones. Walking through its cobbled lanes, you don’t just observe history—you become part of it.

I personally think it is the most stunning square in Kathmandu. The temples, courtyards, and intricate wood carvings are truly breathtaking. It’s less crowded than Kathmandu’s squares, making it perfect for a peaceful cultural experience. A must-visit for history lovers and photographers!

Must visit Durbar square in Bhaktapur, Kathmandu. It is located a bit out of Kathmandu main city, 13 kms away. I paid 500 NPR for the entry being from a SAARC country 🇮🇳 There is a museum also which you should visit along with the Taleju bhawani temple where animals are also sacrificed It is the biggest and grandest among the three - others being Kathmandu & Patan durbar square. Had a lot of local food like Juju Dhau (creamy yogurt), Yomari, Chatpate, Sukhapuri, Newari Khaja set there. Date of Visit - 3rd January 2025

Durbar Square in Bhaktapur is a stunning place full of history and culture. The square is home to several beautiful temples, each with unique architecture and intricate carvings that showcase the rich heritage of Nepal. The atmosphere here is vibrant, and there’s so much to see. From the statues to the detailed wooden structures, it’s a photographer’s dream. It’s a bit of a bummer that the entrance fee is relatively high, especially since it’s mainly aimed at Western tourists. However, the beauty of the temples and the square itself definitely make it worth the visit. I’d highly recommend visiting Durbar Square if you're in Bhaktapur. It’s one of those places where you can really soak in the history and feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Bhaktapur's main central square is home to several important sights, including the elaborate 55 Window Palace housing the National Art Gallery, the Ancient Lions Gate, The Big Bell, and the Golden Gate at the entrance to Taleju Temple Complex. This area also offers a taste of traditional Newari cuisine like Samay Baji. The Golden Gate is a stunning example of ancient craftsmanship and a popular spot for tourists to take pictures.
The Golden Gate in Bhaktapur Durbar Square is a masterpiece of art and history. Known locally as "Lūnkāh Dhwakā", this stunning structure is often regarded as one of the most beautiful examples of metalwork in Nepal. Legend has it that the gate was once made of pure gold, adding an air of mystique and grandeur to its history. Commissioned by King Ranjit Malla in the 18th century, the gate serves as the entrance to the famous 55-Window Palace. The intricate details carved into the gate are awe-inspiring, with depictions of Hindu deities, mythical creatures, and floral patterns. The craftsmanship is so refined that it feels like the stories of gods and legends come alive right before your eyes.

The Golden Gate (Sundhoka) in Bhaktapur is one of Nepal’s most impressive and sacred historical landmarks. Located in Bhaktapur Durbar Square, this gate is widely admired for its exquisite craftsmanship and deep cultural significance. Visitors are often amazed by the level of detail and devotion that went into creating this monument. Built during the reign of King Ranjit Malla, the gate serves as the entrance to the inner courtyard of the old royal palace, known as Mul Chowk. Its front is covered in richly gilded copper and gold-plated figures, featuring intricate carvings of deities and mythical creatures. The gate is not just a display of artistic talent — it’s a powerful symbol of Nepalese devotion to culture and religion. It shows how spiritually rich and culturally proud the Nepalese people have always been. They were so deeply committed to honoring their traditions that they created a gate adorned with gold for their gods and rulers. Anyone visiting Bhaktapur should not miss this masterpiece. The Golden Gate is more than just a historic site — it’s a reminder that Nepal’s true wealth lies in its art, history, and faith. A must-see for lovers of culture and heritage.

The golden gate has character but the inner temple is devoid of soul. The authorities insistance on only allowing Hindus is ludicrous as the inner temple is totally abandoned and one can feel no social vibration in it. Such dogmatism only brings more degradation and destruction

My Experience here was absolutely disgusting. The worst case on animal abuse that I have ever seen in my life. Two men were herding approximately 6 young goats and a buffalo calf into the Hindu temple(for sacrifice I’m assuming)The men were literally beating the animals to the point that one of the goats couldn’t even stand up.

It's a living cultural hub where locals still celebrate festivals and perform daily rituals. A visit to the Dattatraya Temple in Bhaktapur is truly a step back in time, offering a profound glimpse into Nepal's rich cultural and architectural heritage. Nestled in Dattatraya Square, this magnificent temple stands as a testament to the Malla dynasty's artistic prowess, dating back to the 15th century. It’s remarkable to think that this three-story pagoda-style structure, said to be built from the timber of a single tree, has withstood centuries and numerous earthquakes, though it has seen its share of restoration. What strikes you first is the sheer scale and intricate detailing of the wood carvings that adorn every inch of the temple. From the elaborate struts supporting the roofs to the exquisite windows and doorways, each carving tells a story, often depicting deities, mythical creatures, and scenes from daily life. The two fierce Malla wrestlers guarding the entrance, along with the giant conch shell, add to its mystical aura. Beyond its architectural grandeur, the temple exudes a palpable sense of peace and history. Unlike the bustling Durbar Square, Dattatraya Square feels a bit more subdued, allowing for a more contemplative experience. You can spend a good amount of time simply admiring the craftsmanship, feeling the cool stone beneath your feet, and soaking in the spiritual ambiance. The surrounding square itself is charming, with smaller shrines, traditional houses, and local artisans going about their day. It’s a place where history isn't just displayed but actively lived. For anyone interested in history, architecture, or simply seeking a moment of tranquility amidst the vibrant chaos of Bhaktapur, Dattatraya Temple is an absolute must-visit. It truly leaves a lasting impression.

Rising proudly above Bhaktapur’s Taumadhi Square, the Nyatapola Temple stands as a timeless guardian of Nepal’s heritage. Its name, meaning “five stories” in the Newari language, perfectly describes its soaring structure — a five-tiered pagoda that has watched over the city since 1702 AD. Commissioned by King Bhupatindra Malla, the temple was miraculously completed in just a few months, a testament to the skill and devotion of Newar artisans. Dedicated to Siddhi Lakshmi, a powerful form of the goddess Parvati, it was built not merely as a shrine, but as a symbol of strength and balance in a world of divine forces. Legend has it that the temple was erected to tame the fierce energy of Bhairava, the nearby deity known for his destructive power. To restore harmony, the king built this towering temple for Siddhi Lakshmi, whose spiritual might could keep Bhairava’s energy in check. Beyond the myth, historical records tell of an extraordinary communal effort — craftsmen, builders, and laborers from across the Malla kingdom working together to create what would become Nepal’s tallest and most enduring temple. Even nature’s fury has tested it: earthquakes in 1934 and 2015 shook the valley, yet Nyatapola stood firm, its foundation and design proving the brilliance of traditional Newari engineering. When approaching the temple, we are immediately drawn to its grand staircase guarded by stone sentinels — wrestlers, elephants, lions, griffins, and deities — each pair ten times stronger than the one below. Climbing these steps rewards travelers with sweeping views of Taumadhi Square and the old city beyond, where terracotta roofs and bustling alleys tell stories centuries old. Though the inner sanctum is closed to the public and accessible only to priests, the temple’s exterior majesty is more than enough to inspire awe. It's the crown jewel of Bhaktapur, elegance and resilience. It feels like stepping back into a living history — a city that breathes through its temples. The climb can be steep, and qe have seen other pagoda-style temples in the Kathmandu Valley and we find the architecture somewhat familiar. But still this Nyatapola’s towering grace and intricate symbolism make it anything less than extraordinary. Today, the temple remains not just a monument, but a living emblem of Bhaktapur’s identity — a blend of faith, artistry, and endurance. Whether you come to admire its architecture, learn its legends, or simply stand in its shadow, Nyatapola Temple offers an unforgettable glimpse into the soul of Nepal.

ङातापोलँ (Nyatapola) Temple is one of the most iconic and majestic temples in Nepal, located in Taumadhi Square, Bhaktapur. Built during the reign of King Bhupatindra Malla in 1702 AD, it is a masterpiece of Newar architecture and one of the tallest pagoda-style temples in the country. "Nyatapola" comes from the Newar language, meaning "five-tiered", referring to its five gracefully tapering roofs. This tiered design symbolizes the five basic elements—earth, water, fire, air, and sky—and reflects the temple’s spiritual and cosmological significance.

Nyatapola Temple, located in the heart of Bhaktapur Durbar Square in Nepal, is a breathtaking testament to the country's rich cultural heritage and architectural brilliance. Standing tall and proud for over three centuries, this five-tiered pagoda-style temple is not just a place of worship—it’s a symbol of resilience, balance, and divine harmony. What immediately strikes you is its towering elegance. Built in 1702 by King Bhupatindra Malla, Nyatapola (which means "five stories" in Newari) is Nepal’s tallest temple, gracefully dominating the skyline with unmatched poise. Each of the five ascending roofs represents one of the five basic elements—earth, water, fire, air, and sky—highlighting the temple’s deep philosophical foundation. The stairway to the temple is flanked by beautifully sculpted stone guardians—legendary wrestlers, elephants, lions, griffins, and tantric goddesses—each figure symbolically stronger than the last. This not only adds to its grandeur but also reflects a profound spiritual symbolism and layered storytelling unique to Newar culture. Despite surviving multiple earthquakes, including the devastating 2015 quake, Nyatapola has stood firm, a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship and engineering of the Malla era. The temple’s intricate woodwork, fine carvings, and harmonious proportions offer a visual feast to art and history lovers alike. Though the temple is dedicated to Siddhi Lakshmi, a fierce manifestation of the goddess Durga, its peaceful ambiance and panoramic views from the upper tiers make it a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. A visit to Nyatapola is a journey back in time. It’s not just about admiring a monument—it’s about feeling the soul of Bhaktapur, where spirituality, history, and artistry come together in sublime unity. If you ever find yourself in Nepal, missing Nyatapola Temple would be missing the heartbeat of Bhaktapur.

Nyatapol Temple is one of the most iconic landmarks of Bhaktapur and a masterpiece of Newari architecture. Built in 1702 during the reign of King Bhupatindra Malla, this five-storied pagoda is Nepal’s tallest traditional temple and a symbol of strength, balance, and cultural pride. The temple stands gracefully in Taumadhi Square, drawing visitors with its majestic tiered structure and finely crafted stone guardians—legendary wrestlers, elephants, lions, griffins, and goddesses—lined along its steep staircase. Each pair of guardians represents increasing strength, adding layers of myth and meaning to the monument. Climbing up the steps offers not only a closer view of the temple’s details but also a panoramic glimpse of Bhaktapur’s ancient cityscape. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Siddhi Lakshmi, although the inner sanctum is generally closed to the public, preserving its sacredness. What makes Nyatapol Temple remarkable is its resilience. Despite several devastating earthquakes over centuries, the structure has stood firm, a testament to the extraordinary craftsmanship of the Malla-era builders. For travelers, Nyatapol Temple is more than a sightseeing spot—it’s an experience of history, art, and spirituality blended together. The pond itself is quite expansive, and its still waters reflect the sky and the surrounding structures beautifully, creating a picturesque scene. Strolling along the edges of the pond, I was fascinated by the various statues and shrines dedicated to different deities. These structures, combined with the historical ambiance, offer a glimpse into the spiritual life of the local community. The presence of numerous fish in the pond adds to the lively yet calm atmosphere, and feeding them is a popular activity among visitors. The local vendors around the pond sell traditional snacks and refreshments, which provide an authentic taste of local flavors. I particularly enjoyed the experience of sitting by the pond, enjoying a cup of traditional Nepali tea while soaking in the serene surroundings. One of the highlights of my visit was interacting with the locals, who shared interesting anecdotes and historical facts about Siddha Pokhari. Their stories added a rich layer of context to my understanding of the site and its importance in the local culture. Siddha Pokhari is also a popular spot for meditation and quiet contemplation. I noticed several people engaged in these activities, which speaks to the pond’s spiritual significance. The calm environment, combined with the historical aura, makes it an ideal place for reflection and relaxation. In summary, Siddha Pokhari is a hidden gem in Bhaktapur that offers a unique blend of history, culture, and tranquility. It’s an excellent spot for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse themselves in a peaceful and historically rich environment. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or someone seeking a quiet place to unwind, Siddha Pokhari is well worth a visit.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting a serene and picturesque place nestled in a beautiful pond. It was truly a tranquil oasis in the heart of nature. The calm and peaceful ambiance instantly captivated my senses. I highly recommend a visit to this enchanting pond. It is a hidden gem that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression and provide a much-needed respite from the chaos of everyday life. Venture into this peaceful haven, and you will not be disappointed.

Great place to be to skip from daily city chaos. Quiet and beautiful, fully vibrant, enough open space. Ideal for an evening or morning walk or to spend time with your loved ones. The lake is clean and well maintained. Slightly crowded in the evenings nonetheless, spending a couple of hours watching its beauty is a worthwhile.

If they're selling Chatamari like this, they better tske it out of their menu. Why would you serve something like that at such a beautiful place. The ambiance amd the spot is lovely but the food was quite the opposite

The cafe is located right on the main square so it has a lovely view and the service is really good, very friendly. The food however is just ok. I had a breakfast which was decent and good coffee! But I went back for dinner and had the potatoes and momos which were average. The potato’s were so spicy and they really needed a dipping sauce or something. The momos were fried but the casing was too dense and chewy.

so bad. the chicken buffalo wings had strange smell and buffalo wings? these were more dessert than heat—where was the spice? as for the Margherita pizza, it lacked the classic flavors entirely—it was Margherita in name only.

This café is a lovely spot if you want to relax, enjoy the view of Bhaktapur Durbar Square, and soak in the atmosphere. The ambience is pleasant, the service is friendly, and it’s a nice place for coffee, cocktails, or mocktails while watching the world go by. However, if you’re coming here for the food, it might not be the right choice. I found the dishes below average in taste, with nothing particularly unique, and the prices felt a bit high for the quality and quantity served. I’d happily visit again for the view and vibe but not for the food.

Didn’t expect to find Korean food in Bhaktapur let alone one that serves delicious Korean food. We ordered the samgyeopsal, army stew, chicken chilly, pork bibimbap, fruit salad. They are all delicious especially the chicken chilly. We were served unlimited side dishes and the service was attentive. We had wonderful time there.

One needs to go through a house to get into the restaurant. It doesn't look like it's a restaurant at first but after you go through a few doors, the restaurant is seen. The paintings and decorations are pretty and nice. The atmosphere is really good too, comfy and spacious. All of the tables are big and can cater to 6 people easily. The food was delicious. Staffs were disciplined and professional. There were some mosquitoes flying about and biting. Other than that, it was a lovely and tasty experience.

We went to Peaceful Korean restaurant with family and had an amazing experience! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the customer service was outstanding—friendly and attentive. The pork gimbap was full of flavour and incredibly fresh, the Ramyun had the perfect spice balance. The teokbokki was slightly chewy and not properly seasoned and the korean fried chicken was not as expected so can do better on those. Highly recommend for authentic Korean food and a great family dining experience!

Loved the quiet place inside all the hustle. The space is huge with a lot of seating options. We tried Pork Gimbap and Virgin Mojito. Gimbap was ok but the drink was average. There was more ice than the drink itself and the serving glass was very small which didn't feel fair. Overall a quiet place with not a lot of crowd. Will visit again.

A good place in Bhaktapur to get Korean food. The staff is excellent here, with the owner / manager offering to obtain a bottle of red wine from outside the restaurant. The waiter also helped me cook my tabletop chicken, since I was afraid of the splattering oil. The flavor of the food was pretty good, with the banchan offerings diverse (marinated radish, peanuts, kimchi, and burdock). Setting is a house open on one side with light filtering in from the roof. Cash only.

Nestled in the heart of Bhaktapur, Aalucha is a delightful eatery that promises to satisfy your cravings without breaking the bank. Known for its mouthwatering tornado fries, which are generously topped with flavorful sauces and spices, this spot is perfect for a quick snack amidst your sightseeing adventures. The menu also features tempting options like Butter Chicken Poutine and Cheese Chicken Rolls; while the rolls may not stand out on their own, pairing them with the poutine elevates the experience to new heights.
Affordable and tasty tornado fries. Actually, I have not found any other place for better tornado fries than here.

Been here twice in 2 years. I noticed a fall in their taste and quality the 2nd time but it is still worth trying out. Don't order tornado fries though. It's popular here, but its just a glorified overpriced french fries with average taste.

This is a very busy place when we were here on Saturday... Though the service was quick... They were so busy that they could not even clean the areas which were all messed up. The main point is people live what they are doing... It's a unique way of serving potato which is reasonably priced...
Jaikish S — Google review
We had a really disappointing experience here. After finishing our food, we found a cockroach at the bottom of the dish. When I pointed it out to the owner, he apologized and offered to prepare another one, but by then we had already eaten and it was too late. His explanation was that the café had been closed the day before and just reopened, which honestly isn’t an excuse for such poor hygiene. Hygiene in a food place is basic. This isn’t what I expected when I came here. I really hope the owner takes this seriously and fixes it. If you plan to visit, just be extra careful.

Small place where you can enjoy various items. We usually go for tornado potato (their signature dish) but this time we tried loaded chicken fries. Enough portion for one person. Haven't tasted anything like that. Next time we will go for it again. They don't have anymore what some tiktokers and other food bloggers recommend i.e. aalucha shots or something.

Poutine: I really used to love poutine here but recently it's changed a lot - not good right now. Hope they get back their original taste. Anyhow - love the amount of cheese they put in. Tornado fries: It's tasty but even tornado fries are a little different from what they used to serve - potato size ali kum bhayo 😬

Decent place for crisp fried potato if around Bhaktapur Durbar Square... Very small place, too congested... Barely can breath and eat yet kinda cozy for some reason... Tornado fry is fine here... You can see everyone having the same... I tried Paneer warp, it wasn't that good, felt very oily, and wasn't filling too... You visit the place because you're bored not because you're hungry 🤷‍♂️ Get Jujudhau from the shop next to it, the combination isn't bad tho 🙂

I recently visited Tryst Fast Food Restaurant, located near Siddhapokhari, with my mother and sister, and it turned into a truly wonderful dining experience for all of us. The ambience of the restaurant really caught our attention—it looks great from both the outside and inside. It has a clean, cozy vibe that made us feel relaxed and comfortable right away. We were honestly surprised by how good the food and drinks were—way better than we expected! We ordered their Tryst Special Chicken Sizzler, Chinese Chopsuey, and Spicy Chicken. For beverages, we went with an Iced Americano and an Iced Latte. The presentation of the food was impressive, and the way it was served showed great attention to detail. But most importantly, the taste was absolutely delicious—so much so that I felt like I had to share this experience through a review! All in all, we had a great time at Tryst Fast Food. Today I visited a restaurant named Tryst Fast Food located at Siddhapokhari. I ordered Buff Sukuti Sadheko and a Chicken Pizza. Buff Sukuti Sadheko was quite decent in taste , flavorful and enjoyable. However, I felt the quantity was not up to the mark considering the price. Could definitely be improved on that part. As for the Chicken Pizza, honestly, it was a big letdown. It didn’t feel like a pizza at all. The base was more like a roti than actual pizza dough. If you’re someone looking for a proper pizza experience, I wouldn’t recommend trying it here. Ambiance was good though , cozy and decent for a casual meal. Overall, go for the sukuti if you’re around, enjoy the place, but definitely skip the pizza.

Taleju Temple, situated within Kathmandu Durbar Square, is a magnificent testament to Nepal's rich cultural and spiritual heritage. Constructed in 1564 by King Mahendra Malla, this temple is dedicated to Taleju Bhawani, the royal goddess of the Malla dynasty. Its architecture showcases a harmonious blend of Newar and pagoda styles, featuring a towering three-tiered structure adorned with intricate wooden carvings and a gilded pinnacle . The temple holds immense religious significance, being accessible to the public only once a year during the Dashain festival, when devotees gather to pay homage to the goddess . Throughout the rest of the year, visitors can admire its external grandeur and the surrounding historical edifices of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Legend speaks of the goddess Taleju appearing to King Mahendra Malla in a dream, instructing him to build the temple. This divine encounter underscores the temple's spiritual importance and its role in the cultural fabric of Kathmandu . A visit to Taleju Temple offers not only a glimpse into Nepal's architectural brilliance but also an opportunity to connect with the profound spiritual traditions that have shaped the nation's history.

The Taleju Temple is one of Hanuman Dhoka Darbar Square's oldest structures. A "great temple" was built in 1563, under Mahendra Malla's rule, according to ancient diaries (tyasaphus) (r. 1560-74). Four notable structures, including the Jagannath, Kotilingeswar Mahadev, and Mahendreswara temples, are known to have been constructed at Darbar Square under the reign of Mahendra Malla. The Malla period building spree was financed by the kingdom's efforts to issue Tibetan currency for export and increase trade with other Himalayan kingdoms. The temple's current design resembles a cosmic mandala. The main structure has three levels of roofing and is supported by a base with twelve steps that resembles Mount Meru's lower slopes. There are sixteen satellite shrines built as two-story Newar towers all around the sanctuary. Notably, the main structure's roofs are covered in gilt copper sheets and supported by wooden struts with carvings of many gods. The temple is accessed by four portals—one on each side—each of which has a true door and two false doors. With carved wooden colonnettes, toranas over the main doorways, and pointed blocks (bhailahkva) flanking the lower door jambs, each is elaborately articulated.

Boudhanath Stupa, also known as Boudha, is a must-see attraction in Kathmandu, located about 7 kilometers from Thamel. This ancient stupa is one of the largest in Asia and holds great religious significance for Buddhists. Standing at approximately 118 feet tall, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and dates back over 1500 years. Legend has it that the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo built it after unintentionally killing his father.
Boudha Stupa, one of Kathmandu's most iconic landmarks. For me the best time to visit is in the evening when the stupa glows under soft lights, and the ambiance becomes even more serene. The area is lined with numerous restaurants and coffee shops, serving everything from international dishes to authentic Tibetan cuisine. While the atmosphere is relaxing, finding a parking spot can be a challenge.

Visiting Boudhanath Stupa was one of the most peaceful and grounding experiences I’ve had in Kathmandu. The moment I stepped into the square, I felt a deep sense of calm. The stupa is massive and beautifully maintained, surrounded by prayer wheels, monasteries, and local shops. I loved walking clockwise around the stupa with locals and pilgrims—it felt like a spiritual reset. The air is filled with the scent of incense, the sound of chanting, and the flutter of prayer flags. There are also lovely rooftop cafés nearby where you can sit, sip tea, and take it all in from above. Highly recommend making time for this if you’re ever in Kathmandu.

Bouddhanath Stupa is one of the largest and most beautiful stupas in the world, located about 7 km east of central Kathmandu. The stupa is especially enchanting during sunrise and sunset when locals and pilgrims walk around it (kora) in quiet devotion. The atmosphere is serene, with the scent of incense and sound of chants filling the air. Shops and rooftop cafés around the stupa offer great views, Tibetan handicrafts, and local food. It's a perfect place for both spiritual reflection and cultural experience. A must-visit if you're in Kathmandu. Respect local customs, and don't forget to walk clockwise around the stupa!

Pottery Square (Talako Tole) in Bhaktapur is a vibrant hub of traditional pottery making. Local artisans showcase their skills using simple tools and natural materials like mud and water to create an array of pottery items, from cups to piggy banks. The square offers a lively atmosphere with colorful folk art on display. Visitors can observe the craftsmen at work, learn about their techniques, and even purchase some of their unique creations.
Nice place. Central area to do pottery and sun drying area. You can do pottery and take that home. It may cost Rs100-150. It can be done in 5-10mins. Nice experience. Recommend to donif you are in the area.

Many pieces of pottery were lined up to dry. It was interesting to see the unique shapes of the pottery. It seems you can also make your own items on the potter's wheel. The souvenir shops in the area also sold a variety of small items, which was nice.

Great place to see how the locals making clay pots and other clay based items. You can even sign up for a class, the vendors even offered me a private class at very affordable price, maybe because of low season.

Pottery Square, located near Nyatapola Temple, is known for its traditional clay craftsmanship. Local artisans create various clay utensils here, and visitors can also try their hand at making their own pottery.

Pottery Square in Bhaktapur is one of those rare places where culture, craftsmanship, and community come together beautifully. Located just a short walk from the iconic Nyatapola Temple, this charming square offers a glimpse into the living heritage of traditional pottery-making. Here, you can witness local artisans skillfully shaping clay into beautiful pots, utensils, and decorative items—each piece telling its own story of Bhaktapur’s rich artistic legacy. What makes Pottery Square truly special is the authentic experience it offers. Visitors are not just spectators; you can actually join a pottery class and try your hand at crafting your own clay masterpiece. During my visit, a friendly local vendor even offered me a private class at a very affordable price, possibly because it was the low season. It turned out to be a fun, hands-on experience that gave me a deeper appreciation for the patience and skill involved in traditional pottery-making. Beyond the craft itself, the atmosphere of Pottery Square is warm, inviting, and filled with positive energy. The owners and artisans are incredibly welcoming and love sharing stories about their work and heritage. The structures, courtyards, and the earthy aroma of clay create a truly nostalgic and peaceful setting. It’s not just a marketplace—it’s a living museum where tradition thrives in every corner. If you’re visiting Bhaktapur, make sure to reserve some extra time here to interact with the locals, support their art, and perhaps take home a unique handmade souvenir. Go local, support local — and experience the heart of Bhaktapur at Pottery Square!

In the old city of Bhaktapur, on the way to visiting temples, you can make a stop to the Pottery square. You will see the the hand-made pot drying in the sun. You can also observe how they manufacture them. The pottery is mainly used for paying tribute to the Gods.

Short walk from Durbar square, so if you're in the area, definitely worth a visit. Interesting to see all the pottery laid out to dry. You can actually see some people making the pottery in the morning.

Bhairavnath Temple

Hindu temple
Nestled near the iconic five-storied temple, the Bhairavnath Temple is a captivating ancient site that draws visitors with its rich history and stunning architecture. Constructed in the early 17th century by Jaga Jyoti Malla, this pagoda-style temple was later enhanced by King Bhupatindra Malla in 1717, who added an extra story to its structure.
One of the sacred Bhairav temples where the Bisket Jatra festival is celebrated. It's a must-visit temple when you're in Bhaktapur Durbar Square.
Suraz K — Google review
Across the landscapes of Nepal and India, the name Bhairavnath Temple echoes with reverence and awe. Dedicated to Lord Bhairava — the fierce, protective form of Lord Shiva — these temples embody both power and devotion. Though they differ in setting and story, each Bhairavnath Temple serves as a spiritual stronghold, guarding sacred spaces and symbolizing the delicate balance between creation and destruction that defines Shiva himself. In Bhaktapur, Nepal, the Bhairavnath Temple stands proudly beside the towering Nyatapola Temple in Taumadhi Square. Built in the early 17th century and later rebuilt after an earthquake in 1715, this three-story pagoda is a masterpiece of Newari craftsmanship. Its intricate wooden carvings and tiered structure reflect both artistry and resilience. Commissioned by King Jagat Jyoti Malla and later enhanced by King Bhupatindra Malla, the temple embodies Bhaktapur’s royal devotion to Bhairava, who was believed to protect the city and its rulers from harm. Far to the west, high in the Himalayas, lies another Bhairavnath Temple — the guardian of Kedarnath in India. Perched on a hill overlooking the Kedarnath Temple, it is believed that Lord Shiva appointed Bhairava to protect the region when he leaves Kedarnath for the winter months. Pilgrims trekking up the steep path to the shrine see it not merely as a temple visit, but as completing a divine circle of protection and faith. Meanwhile, in the sacred hills of Vaishno Devi, Bhairavnath’s story takes a dramatic turn. According to legend, he pursued the goddess Vaishno Devi until she defeated him, granting him liberation at the very spot where his temple now stands. Visiting this temple marks the final step in the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage — a symbolic closure where forgiveness and redemption triumph over aggression. Even in the serene forests of Lonavala, Maharashtra, another Bhairavnath Temple offers a quieter reflection of the god’s power. With its salmon-colored façade and centuries-old Konkan-style architecture, it provides a peaceful retreat for worshippers. Yet, some visitors note restrictions — such as women not being allowed in the main sanctum — and mention its modest size compared to expectations. Across all these sacred sites, the experience is deeply peaceful and spiritually moving. Whether amidst the crowded alleys of Bhaktapur or the misty hills of Lonavala, Bhairavnath’s presence remains constant — fierce yet compassionate, destructive yet protective. Each temple, in its own way, tells a story of devotion, endurance, and the eternal dance of divine energy.

Komeil K — Google review
The Bhairavnath Temple stands on the east side of Bhaktapur's Taumadhi Square, southeast of the main Darbar square. Also known as the Kasi Biswonath or the Pantali mandir, it is a three-story, rectangular temple dedicated to the god Bhairav (Nasa Dyo), an incarnation of Shiva and the god of terror and infinite space. More specifically, according to Dowman, this particular temple is the residence of Akash Bhairav (the sky Bhairav) and is distinguishable from other manifestations of the same deity, such as the Akash Bhairav in Kathmandu. Bhairav has a particular fascination with machines and is often thought to inhabit wheels, with different versions of the god inhabiting different wheels on the same chariot. At the Bhairavnath temple, a chariot used in the annual Bisket-Jatra festival is stored, dismantled, against the temple's north wall. Around the Nepali new year per the Vikram Savat calendar—in March or April—the chariot is reassembled, and an image of Bhairav is installed within the chariot. Although the chariot, like the temple, is huge, the image of the god is a diminutive 30-centimeter head lacking a body. At festival time, competing teams from the town's upper quarter and the lower quarter meet in the large Taumadi square in front of the temple. According to Gutschow, the square is a sort of neutral zone where the opposing teams compete in a grand tug-of-war contest to pull the chariot toward one or the other sides of town. As the chariot is tugged in opposite directions, it advances slowly along the streets according to whichever team is strongest. In the end, regardless of whichever side "wins," the chariot is ultimately moved to the Yahsikhyah square on the south side of the city in time for New Year's Eve

Bhaktapur is a great place to stay outside of the Kathmandu city. Calmer and cleaner, and you can breathe. Saw some damage in the earthquake but they are rebuilding! This temple is dedicated to one of Shiva's reincarnations

The broad-fronted, triple-roofed Bhairabnath Temple is dedicated to Bhairab, the fearsome incarnation of Shiva, whose consort occupies the Nyatapola Temple across the square. The temple was damaged but not destroyed in the 2015 earthquake but several adjacent buildings collapsed.
Fahmi A — Google review
Bhairavnath temple is one of the temples in Bhaktapur Durbar Square and is built in the pagoda style. The entry ticket to Bhaktapur also guarantees a visit to this temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Bhairav, which is supposed to be the most ferocious form of Lord Shiva. Originally, the temple had just one storey which was built by King Jagat Jyoti Malla. However, in 1717, two more storeys were added to this temple by King Bhupatindra Malla. The statue of Lord Bhairav is about 12 feet long and is one of the largest statues in Kathmandu Valley. Thousands of people visit Bhairavnath temple during Bhairav Ashtami or Bhairav Jayanthi as it is celebrated religiously. Even though the temple was slightly damaged during the earthquake in November 2015, it still has retained most of its structure.
Milan S — Google review
The first temple on this site was built in the early 17th century, but King Bhupatindra Malla added an extra storey in 1717 and a third level was added when the temple was rebuilt after the 1934 earthquake. The Bhairab deity incranation of Shiva is in the temple.

We got the photography pass and even showed it to the staff on the top floor, but the guy, who seemed either upset or distracted, suddenly started shouting at us. It didn’t help that he was arguing with his wife on the phone shortly after. While the overall experience had its moments, it was clear that the staff lacked proper training—they seemed more like locals doing their best rather than representatives/professionals. As for the museum itself, it’s a bit underwhelming. There are some carved stones and the heritage is certainly there, but the focus on idol worship throughout the building wasn’t particularly engaging but rather alarming for us. It’s just a personal preference. That said, the view from the window is definitely worth checking out!
Anugraha G — Google review
Ticket is 150 and not included in the already expensive 2000 rupees of the square, but honestly it's not really worth and quite confusing why called National Art. Building is so so, especially compared with the museum in Patan Durbar square, and exhibits are poor. Some erotic exhibits and so on but nothing special. Maybe just take photos outside is enough. Not really recommend.

It's located inside bhaktapur durbar square. Entry fee is charged separately for this museum. If you buy a ticket for this museum, there are 2 other museums located in different places, which are covered in this tickets, metal museums and wooden museums. Make sure you visit those 2 museums too. No guides available, so you'll have to read the description for the details.

Mayur Jhyaal, also known as the Peacock Window, is an ancient wooden window adorned with intricate bird carvings and a prominent peacock carving at its center. This renowned craftsmanship can be found in various temples and old houses throughout Bhaktapur city, making it a popular souvenir for tourists. The 55 Windowed Palace in Bhaktapur Durbar Square showcases remarkable woodcrafts including the Peacock Window.
located in a small lane off of Dattatreya Square, above the Peacock Window Handicraft Center. One of Nepal's most exquisite carvings is said to be a wooden peacock. The Woodcarving Museum is housed in the early 15th-century building known as Pujari Math. The Brass and Bronze Museum, which is located in the Chikanpha Math across the street, has a collection of historic Malla household items and ceremonial metalwork. Worth a visit if you're in the vicinity, although there isn't much to see here outside the Peacock Window. A prime example of master craftsmanship in figure and ornamental carvings may be found on the Math's main doorway. A small Shiv is depicted in the center of the ornately adorned doorframe, perched on his throne. A Garud stands over the Shiv and the people entering the Math while clutching two Nagas that are moving in opposite directions in infinite coils between his claws. The Sun and Moon are placed on either side of the Ashtamangalas, which are eight auspicious symbols used by both Hindus and Buddhists. Next, there are two representations of Vishnu, Ganga, and Yamuna. There are two Bhairavs at the bottom. Various styles of peacock windows adorn the eastern side of the Math. Its most renowned element, the magnificent Peacock Window from the 15th century, which is recognized as the best carved window in the valley, is still in condition. The best-preserved window features a peacock's body in the center, with feathers spread out to serve as fillings for the circular window.

This is an ancient window made by skilled craftsmen which consists of number of tiny bird carvings with big peacock carving at the center. You can find this type of window in most of temples in Bhaktapur city along with old houses. This typical wooden carved window is very famous and it can be gifted for foreign friends. Many tourist buy this window as a souvenir. The 55 Windowed Palace in Bhaktapur Durbar Square has marvellous woodcrafts along with Peacock Window.
Saroj S — Google review
Although what others told me, I found this to be not that special. The carvings are well done and the overall window itself is well preserved. The main thing which I didn't like was the commercial hassle around it. It's just not that special compared to all the perfectly carved and build buildings in close proximity.

Nestled in the heart of Pottery Square, The Pottery Cafe and Bar offers a delightful dining experience that combines stunning views with delicious food at reasonable prices. This charming spot is easy to find with a little help from Google Maps, and once you arrive, you'll be greeted by friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere. The price was very local despite the view and the cleanness feeling of this place. We ate here twice, once for lunch, once for dinner and enjoyed it all. The entrance is a little bit hard to find but just follow google map and you'll got it. The staffs are nice and local customers there were nice too. Really recommend for anytime.

We had lunch and dinner a few times during our stay in Bhaktapur. The service is very good and the prices are good too. The food is freshly made but a little salty and not the best in Nepal. The place is hygienic and in the evening it is cosy. The veg pokada is a good pick!

Great rooftop view over pottery square, so not many other tall buildings inhibiting the view. The food is nicer and at a lower price than many competitors in the area. The seating arrangements are neat and the overall place was tidy. Service was good and the food came in 10-15 minutes. Great spot 👌

The atmosphere is good. I ordered chicken pizza, crispy chicken burgers and chocolate milkshake. The burger and milkshake was so good, I really enjoyed it. But the pizza was 'No' for me. They really have to improve their pizza base, it's too thin. Overall, it was good experience. 💐

The experience at Cafe Gotama was delightful, with excellent service and delectable cuisine. The only slight drawback was a slightly untidy table, resulting in one star deducted from the overall rating. Nevertheless, the recommendation for this establishment is justified due to its spectacular view of Buddha and the special attention given to staff members with disabilities. The rooftop area and restaurant decorations create a pleasant atmosphere, allowing visitors to enjoy one of the most breathtaking vistas of Boudha stupa.
Excellent Korean Restaurant with a Heart We absolutely love this place! The food is excellent — especially the Veg Pagoda and the Mix Fried Rice, which are some of the best we’ve ever had. The service is always polite and attentive, and what truly stands out is that the owner supports people with disabilities by giving them employment opportunities in the restaurant — something truly admirable. The food and drinks are served quickly, and the view overlooking the Boudhanath Stupa is simply incredible. Honestly, we don’t understand the negative reviews; every time we’ve come here, we’ve been treated wonderfully and enjoyed outstanding food. Highly recommended!
Nuria C — Google review
Starting with the ambiance—absolutely stunning! The perfect view of Boudha Stupa creates such a serene and inviting atmosphere. However, I was let down by the service and food quality, particularly the tea, which didn’t meet expectations. Additionally, the condition of the washroom could use some improvement. Wishing the team the best for the future and hope to see enhancements in these areas!

The restaurant provides a breathtaking view of the Boudha Nath Stupa, a site rich in historical and religious significance, from its rooftop. Dining here is a visual treat as you can enjoy your meal while gazing at the magnificent stupa. The food is well-prepared and flavorful, making it a delightful culinary experience. The ambiance is decent, offering a comfortable and pleasant setting that enhances the overall dining experience. The service is attentive and efficient, ensuring that your visit is enjoyable from start to finish.
Neeraj K — Google review
Visited Gotama Restaurant in Boudha on 10 May 2025 after a sightseeing trip. Sadly, the experience was quite disappointing. There was no warm welcome or greeting upon entry, and the seating area felt neglected—tablecloths were visibly dirty and one chair cover was even wet. Despite the restaurant not being busy, service was slow. It took around 10 minutes for drinks (lassi) and another 20 minutes for food (sushi, Thai dishes, and momo). While the food initially tasted good, things took a serious turn when I found a cockroach inside my last piece of momo. When I reported this to the manager, he apologized and said it was a “blunder” due to being busy, and offered a replacement—which I declined. The item was removed from the bill, but the damage was already done. This raises major concerns about hygiene and pest control. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this restaurant unless serious improvements are made.
Santosh A — Google review
This was one of the WORST restaurant experiences I’ve ever had. The staff here have absolutely ZERO sense of hospitality or basic manners. I went with my family (4 people total) and right from the start they completely ignored us. They didn’t even bother asking us to sit, didn’t greet us, nothing. They just tossed the menus on the table and walked away like we were invisible. To make things worse, there were only 3 chairs at the table, and even though they clearly saw we were 4 people, they didn’t bring another chair. I was literally left standing while they pretended not to notice. When I tried to get their attention, they still ignored us. Honestly, it felt like they didn’t care at all if we stayed or left. The staff were unbelievably rude, careless, and unprofessional — it makes you wonder if they even want customers. If this is how they treat families coming to dine, I can’t imagine how they treat anyone else. Save yourself the time, money, and frustration — there are plenty of other restaurants that actually understand what hospitality means. This place is a complete disgrace.
Rohit S — Google review
The perfect view of Boudha Stupa creates a peaceful atmosphere. However, me and my family was let down by the service and food quality, which didn’t meet expectations. Very poor hospitality.the worst was PIZZA which was so bland , i can say one of the worst pizza i had untill now.
Doma S — Google review
The experience was not so bad. Also to enjoy the stupa view only few seats are available.
Dhiraj S — Google review
We came here hoping for a nice view, and the ambience did feel quite serene. The view truly was beautiful and perfect for photos. However, our experience with the food was very disappointing. Some dishes were undercooked, poorly presented, and, most concerning, the veg kothey momo had a foul smell. After checking Google reviews, we realized that many other customers had faced similar issues—even reports of cockroaches in the food. Next time, I’ll be sure to check reviews more carefully before choosing a restaurant.

We recently dined at De Temple Café, located right next to Dattatreya Temple. The view of Dattatreya Square from the café is truly beautiful and makes it a great spot to sit and enjoy the surroundings. However, I was quite disappointed with the food and service. We didn't receive even the basic level of hospitality that one would expect from such a place. What made me feel even more uncomfortable was the noticeable difference in how local guests and foreign guests were treated. It felt unfair and unwelcoming. I hope the management pays attention to this and improves both their service quality and guest experience, as the café itself has great potential because of its location and view.

The food was very good. We can recommend the chicken momos, the pad Thai, and spicy sour soup. The view of the Temple and square is amazing. A star deduction for service. They didn't tell us no cards when we came in and they had difficulty bringing hot sauce in a timely fashion.

Only had coffee ☕️ Located overlooking one of the squares. Overall I would rate as 3 stars. Service was slow and flegmatic. Toilets absolute no no. Could have maintained better toilets considering prices they charge ( although still cheap, fairly more expensive than other coffee shops). Overrated place in my view purely for tourists tick box as I've seen this listed in one of the nepal guide books as a " must visit ". Not sure how it got that reputation.

I have been working in this industry for more than 10 years and I never see this worst service in my entire life. 1. Whenever we are serving coffee there must be a glass of water,if it’s dopio, espresso the water must be there. We weren’t served water we had to ask for it and we were 2 people and they only served 1 glass. 2. If you don’t serve regular water you could’ve brought a mineral water which was fine.but they didn’t. 3.We literally asked for a water for 4 times form table and they didn’t respond it.I literally went to counter and tell them to bring water and they were using there phone.you can check it was 2025/10/22(4:30 pm). 4. I was so hungry and asked for menu and again there was no response.so I have to left that cafe because there were no one to attend us and how can you expect a nice food when their servers won’t even serve water even after telling more than 10 times.if it was busy I can understand but they were no guest in basement and 2 servers were using their phone and ignoring the customer. Even if it’s a last restaurant in planet I would starve to death rather then going to that restaurant…..

Fabulous momos right next to the 5 stage temple place. It is mostly for locals, who told me that you are assured the ingredients are fresh s there is high turnover by népali people here. Indeed the room is spartiate, but the food makes up for it. And nice people who serve you quite fast. And if course, not expensive at all, 120 rps for momos chicken. Enjoy!

great taste of buff momo and still at just rs80. place is just right the corner near Nyatapola. it is usually very packed and you need to wait your time. but the momo taste is still the same. never disappoints

The food was average, nothing that stood out, but considering the price it felt reasonable. It’s not a spot I’d choose for a special meal, but fine if you just want something quick and simple without spending much. Overall, it’s okay.

If you are a momo enthusiast then this place is not for you. You will puke if you see their kitchen. Isnt an authentic nepali momo. You better try "mahabharat momo" in patan dhoka or the jamal chowk's famous "delicious momo".

This place is packed by locals, super nice to eat Momos. Only chicken and buff, served quickly at a real bargain price. Foreigners do not know this place and spend 3 times more for the same. Get the authentic…

affordable and very popular informal momo shop. popular amongst the teenagers..! produced fresh in batches. quality and taste are reasonable compared to other restaurants.

Really great place to have momo. Typical local momo taste with affordable prices. The location and the area provide us a local essence. The residence of this place is well known as kumari ghar so due to which i felt some what special from every perspective. But then the momo could be much more better expanding its prices. I find too cozy place as well. Beside these all i don't felt the food was too hygienic. People who serve us are too friendly and always smiling. Service is too quick which i love most.

The first of its type "Kathmandu Fun Valley" altered how people in Kathmandu define an outing. Kathmandu Fun Valley is the ideal hideaway to escape the heat or to enjoy with friends or family. In addition to providing options for children, Kathmandu Fun Valley also offers a variety of exhilarating rides and other attractions. The water park has a number of slides, a wave-effect pool, and a kid-friendly Fun Park. Only thing to be considered is the quality of Water that they are using, too much chlorinated.

Kathmandu Fun Valley is past Bhaktapur and takes some time from with traffic to get here if you live in Kathmandu. It’s the oldest water park in Nepal and I don’t think it has been updated. The wave pool was fun and everyone in the park joins the pool when it’s turned on so it can get quite crowded. The lifeguards do a good job. But the red, circular slide tipped us over towards the end and we fell off the tube and got skinned up. The entry price pays for everything- kiddie rides plus the little Hindu museum. I like exploring new areas so it was fun to check this place out once but I will go to Whoopeeland next time.

The review is about the restaurant. The pizza is very hard. The tornado fries tastes like boiled potatoes just some spices on it. The coke tastes more like water. The ambience is good but some staffs are rude. There's no cashier available at any time and the calculation is wrong. The service is very late. They don't even provide a menu without getting asked and one staff was ignoring too.

The pool is disgusting 🤮. Poultry farm is just close to the pool. There were dead frogs and feathers of chickens in the pool. Pieces of plastics and a dead insects. The beneath tiles was a kind of slippery. The water was too dirty ughhh 🤮. Not to forget the toilets…. Oh my god, you can’t imagine the smell and the haalat. Musa ko acheee every where in the changing room. While the price is too high. Not recommended

Hindu temple
Siddhi Vatsala Temple is situated adjacent to the 55 Window Temple in Bhaktapur Durbar Square. It follows a Shikhar architectural style and is known for its protective powers against evil spirits. The temple is devoted to Siddhi Laxmi, an intense form of the goddess Durga, and stands as a symbol of spiritual strength and protection from negative forces.
Another amazing temple in Bhaktapur, built around 1702. Unfortunately, the temple was damaged in the 2015 quakes. It is still standing though, and hopefully will be restored to its former glory.

Siddhi Lakshmi Temple, attractive 17th-century stone temple, is stand in east side of Bhaktapur Durbar Square.
Shree K — Google review
The attractive 17th-century stone Siddhi Lakshmi Temple stood by the southeastern corner of Bhaktapur palace until it collapsed in the 2015 earthquake. The steps up to where the temple once stood remain and are flanked by male and female attendants, each leading a child and a rather eager-looking dog. On successive levels the stairs are flanked by horses, garlanded rhinos, human-faced lions and camels. The temple itself was built in the classic shikhara style, commonly seen in northern India. Behind the temple is a neglected corner that contains a pair of massive, lost-looking curly haired stone lions.

Nṛtya vatsalā temple, also known as Vatsala Devi Temple, is a significant Hindu temple located at the heart of Bhaktapur Durbar Square in Nepal. Constructed in 1672 by ruler Jagat Prakash Malla, this sikhara-style monument is dedicated to Goddess Durga. The temple's unique architecture and historical significance make it a must-visit for travelers exploring the area.
Vatsala Temple was built in 1672 by King Jagat Prakash Malla while the Taleju Bell which was in front of the temple (Temple was destroyed in 2015 quakes) was placed there by King Jaya Ranjit Malla in 1737. The beautiful Taleju Bell is still standing. I have rated it 5 stars based on a strong hope that this beautiful temple is going to be rebuilt to it's former glory.

Located at just 16km away from the chaos of Kathmandu city, One of the most important temples of Goddess Durga, Vatsala Durga Temple is located at Bhaktapur Durbar Square. The temple is famous for its amazing architecture design constructed uniquely among other temples in Bhaktapur. Late king Jagat Prakash Malla built this temple in 1672 in the name of Goddess Durga to protect our historical significance and culture. You can find many devotees visiting this temple to perform pujas and yagnas for the goddess to gain happiness, prosperity, purity, and salvation in life. A huge Taleju bell is just located at the side of the temple to mark morning and evening prayers. The most famous and attractive 55 Windows Royal Palace is also situated opposite to this temple. This area is surrounded by many religious temples and attractions so, you can find many tourists roaming around this place. We would recommend you to visit this important religious site if you are near the Bhaktapur area of Kathmandu valley.

Originally built in the mid 17th century, this temple was remodeled by Bhupatindra Malla in the name of his deceased father. The inside of the Nṛtya vatsalā consists of a statue of dancing Shiva and a tall mound like structure (or the kalasa) of the goddess Vatsalā Devi. Vatsalā literally means loving mother in Sanskrit and hence is a mother goddesses believed to protect Bhaktapur. If you ever get a chance to glimpse inside statue, don't forget to observe a religious map of Bhaktapur on its head of the structure there.

The Batsala Temple is the shikhara style temple, which was built by King Jagat Prakash Malla and is similar to the Krishna Temple in Patan. In the front of the temple is a large Taleju Bell erected by King Ranajit Malla in 1737. Sadly the temple was completely destroyed in the April 25th earthquake in Nepal. It is currently it is restored (2020). Several smaller monuments have been rebuilt near it. The Vatsala Durga Temple is made from sandstone and sits beside King Bhupatindra Malla's statue directly in front of the Royal Palace of 55 Windows. Though sandstone its appearence is more of limestone. The Taleju Bell was placed there to mark morning and evening prayers at the Taleju Temple and is undamaged. There are several restaurants behind the temple which make for great viewing areas over Bhaktapur Durbar Square.

Visited this temple back in 2012 before the devastating Gorkha earthquake flattened this beautiful Shikhara style temple. This temple was constructed in sandstone and is built upon a three-stage plinth. The bell in front of the temple is the Telaju Bell, or the bell of barking dogs. Apparently when it was rung every morning when goddess Taleju was worshiped, the dogs will barked and howled. Mysteriously, this bell survived the 2015 earthquake.
Jo L — Google review
Vatsala Temple was a stone temple dedicated to goddess Vatsala Devi that included many carvings. It was most famous for its silver bell, known to local residents as "the bell of barking dogs" as when it was rung, dogs in the vicinity barked and howled. The colossal bell was hung by King Ranjit Malla in 1737 AD and was used to sound the daily curfew. It was rung every morning when goddess Taleju was worshiped. Despite the Temple being completely demolished by the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, the bell remains intact.
Anik M — Google review
This stone temple is without doubt a smaller version of the Patan Krishna mandir. It has three steppen base. The colonnade has fourteen octagonal pillars like the Patan temple. There is no upper storey, but there are eight features above the cornice; at the corners are octagonal turrets, in the form of miniature temples, and four small pavilions are set on the faces of the Shikhara. The structure is completed by a tapering Shikhara and a finial with two bell-shaped members, amalakas, kalasha, and a trident. The temple was built by Bhupatindra Malla in the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century and consecrated to Batsala Devi. She is probably a form of Durga as the goddess in the pavilion above the main door and the image of as eighteen-armed Mahishamardini located inside the sanctum door suggest. - Kathmandu Valley Inventory

Restaurant
Aamako Bara Pasal is a cozy eatery in Bhaktapur known for its specialty dish, bara, a Newari lentil dosa topped with egg or egg and buff. Run by a humble mother-daughter duo, the shop has gained recognition from both local and international food enthusiasts. The consistent quality of the food prepared by "ama," the dedicated chef, has made it a favorite spot for visitors.
“Aama’ means mother in Nepali language. The shop owner old lady is a true definition of what mothers are like: warm, friendly, welcoming and will make sure you eat enough food. Aama is such a sweet, friendly, cheerful person. We got Wo: and it was amazing! We had the aloo and buff mince, egg wo:. This place is situated around Bhaktapur durbar square area, right after Nyatapole temple and usually open around 1pm (we went there during winter, summer time may vary). If you would like to have authentic newari food, in particular wo: highly recommend Aamako bara pasal. 😊

The best Bara ever! After watching so many reviews on insta, I went there to try Bara 2 years ago and till date, no any Bara has ever reached upto its level, for me. Every time I visit Bhaktapur Durbar Square, I make sure not to miss this spot. It has become an absolute favorite of mine. The aaloo is also tasty. Once, I ate 4 plate Bara in a go, I love it that much!

A small place where Aama cooks Bara and other food items are also available. If you are lucky you'll find a place to sit, otherwise you'll have to stand and eat. We tried Chicken Egg Bara and it was delicious. Aloo was okayish. The price was a bit high though.

Nestled in Bhaktapur, Ama ko Bara Pasal stands out as a celebrated bara shop, drawing attention from local and international food bloggers alike. My repeated visits—this being the 3rd or 4th—have only reinforced the notion that consistency is the key to its culinary success. What sets this place apart is the presence of "ama," the lone chef, who tirelessly prepares each order, ensuring that the taste remains unwaveringly delightful over the years. The ambiance is a lively spectacle, with the small space bustling with activity. There's a certain charm in the compact setting that adds to the overall experience. Whether you're a regular or a first-timer, the welcoming atmosphere and the aroma of Newari delicacies make it a must-visit spot for anyone with an appreciation for authentic and flavorful local cuisine. Ama ko Bara Pasal truly encapsulates the essence of Newari food in every bite, making it a gem in the heart of Bhaktapur.

This is a must-stop for me when visiting Bhaktapur Durbar Square, and the bustling scene at this place adds to its charm. The mixed bara with jhol is my go-to, and despite the wait of 10-15 minutes during busy days, this is worth trying. Aama preparing the newari delicacy keeps the place lively. Pro tip: Hang out by the main door to avoid being overlooked. The hot plate of bara not only entices but also satisfies, making it a delightful experience. This small place definitely is viral for a reason 😁 Be sure to carry cash, they don't have phone or card pay option. I paid Rs 125 for the mix bara with jhol.

Nestled in the heart of Bhaktapur, Mayur Restaurant is a delightful culinary gem that offers an array of Asian dishes. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and welcoming ambiance, this eatery has garnered attention from both locals and travelers alike. With a menu that showcases the rich flavors of Nepalese cuisine, it promises to be a memorable dining experience.
This restaurant is located inside an ancient traditional courtyard with beautiful decorations. It is calm and quiet in contrast to the busy city. Here you can get excellent food, the staff is really friendly, and you get to relax a little. If you don't like spicy food, they will actually give you non-spicy food, not like in many other places where "not spicy" still results in a fire in your mouth for the average Western tongue. It is one of the best places I've eaten in Nepal so far.

We were really disappointed with our experience here. We ordered the chicken local thali and the red Thai curry with chicken and rice, and unfortunately, both dishes fell short—especially for the price. The chicken in the thali was overcooked. The daal in the thali was extremely watery, and the vegetables were undercooked. The red Thai curry was overly salty and had only three small pieces of chicken in it. To make things worse, the service was poor. One of the staff members had a terrible attitude—when we raised concerns about the food, they showed no interest in helping, simply dropped the dishes on the table and walked away. Overall, not worth the price or the experience.
Swojeet K — Google review
The restaurant had a good ambiance. Food was good and had a good time. The restroom was very very smelly and we had to anyway to go inside washroom to clean our hands. This spoiled the whole experience.
Aparna B — Google review
Inspired by Newari culture, this converted home-turned-restaurant is a visual delight. The intricate architecture, traditional tables, doors, and even the toilets reflect the rich history that has thrived within these walls. The warm and welcoming ambiance makes you feel like a guest in someone's home. While the food is decent, if you want an authentic Newari culinary experience, exploring the nearby alleyways is recommended. This family-run business offers genuine hospitality and friendly smiles. As soon as you enter, you'll notice the serene atmosphere and a notable change in the ambiance. While it may not be crowded like other places, this is actually a benefit for those seeking a peaceful and serene environment. The pricing might be slightly higher, but it's worth it for those who appreciate the lush greenery and unique ambiance. Additionally, it also serves as a great co-working space where you can meet like-minded individuals. If you're looking for a place to unwind, soak in the atmosphere, or connect with others, Mayur Restaurant is a good option.

Taleju Bhawani Temple Bhaktapur

4.5
(34)
Hindu temple
Taleju Bhawani Temple in Bhaktapur, built in 1553, is a highly revered site within the Royal Palace grounds. Accessible through Mul Chowk, this sacred temple is open only to Hindus. While non-Hindus cannot enter or take photos inside, they can admire the intricate woodcarvings at the entrance and explore the surrounding area. The temple square features two shrines dedicated to Taleju Bhawani and Kumari.
All the 3 Taleju temples including 1 from Kathmandu and 1 from Patan are guarded and revered sacretly by the locals. Even for hindus, 90% of this amazing grand temple is off limits for a good reason. This is the way it should always be as it is meant for the wellbeing and protection of locals so my request for foreigners is that pls respect that and do not lable this into your pseudo liberal terms. Yes, it would have been nice if they put up a signage to explain this to tourists in at least different languages like English, chinese etc language. It is said that, there were 99 courtyard (chowks) at the peak of Malla rulers who were themselves masters of tantrisism and art.It is heart breaking to see such a treasure trove being ill kept due to lack of funding. Having just seen india's Jaipur. Although not comparing, this temple if restored will no doubt be even grandeur.
Nishant K — Google review
It's is beautiful and amazing place, but unfortunately, religious discrimination is present in that place, which in the 21st century is regrettable. Only people of a specific religion can enter, why? The funny thing is that the museum charges foreigners more and then they can't enter that place? Also, why is it guarded by the army? It is sad that segregation, discrimination and religious intolerance are practiced in a sacred place. In the end, all religions are the same, just with a different name.
Daniela E — Google review
Unfortunately you have to be by blood Indian and look like Hindu to enter. Namaste may not do the trick, you might have to recite the whole text of Ramayana or alike to convince the guard. Alternatively, maybe just create a virtual tour experience with a QR code links for tourists.

This temple, built in 1553 is one of the most sacred temples in Bhaktapur. It is inside the Royal Palace grounds, accessed via Mul Chowk. Only Hindus can enter the temple, but you can peer in and admire its entrance fronted by magnificent woodcarvings. Photography is prohibited. The temple is one-storeyed. The artworks found in the temple are regarded among best in Nepal. The temple square consists of two shrines for two female deities, Taleju Bhawani and Kumari. The temple of Taleju has always been one of Bhaktapur’s most sacred spots, traditionally closed to all but the reigning kings. The main entrance door that leads to temple square is beautifully sculpted and so are the inside of the temples. Inside the temple, window, doors, struts are carved with images of various female deities. It is said that King Bhupatindra Malla himself carved one of the window. The square consists of two stone pillars, a four feet plinth, and a bell hanged in stone pillars. There are numerous doors on each four side and each door has sculpture of kalash, conch and eye on two adjacent sides. One of the door leads to a pond which is source of water for Naghpokhari “the royal bath”. One Thing is interesting about Taleju Bhawani Temple that is the square area in its middle. It is believed that the square is almost exactly equal to one rapani of area. People haven’t measured yet but the belief is still there.

Beautiful wood carving on the entrance of the door. Hindu temple. Our guide told us the color they used to paint the place were the originals, since the 1300s. It still last till today as part of the temple is not exposed to the sun. Very beautiful place.

Wood Carving Museum

Archaeological museum
The Wood Carving Museum in Bhaktapur showcases a stunning collection of woodcarvings, some dating back to the 15th century. The museum itself has a rich history, having been built during the reign of King Yakshya Malla and later refurbished by German experts as a wedding gift to King Birendra. Despite its small size, visitors can admire beautiful statues and intricate wood artifacts in this peaceful and enchanting museum.
The current wood carving museum was built during the reign of King Yakshya Malla, along with Bhaktapur's most epigraphic shrine, the Dattatraya Temple. It was partially reconstructed in 1763 with King Yakshya Malla's permission. In 1979, German experts refurbished it once again as a wedding gift to then-King Birendra. The peacock window, as the most enticing woodcraft from the 15th century, drew us in even now. This masterwork is reached by a tiny street facing south.

I had an exceptional dining experience—the food was of the highest quality and truly authentic in flavor. The staff were incredibly courteous and attentive. I’m extremely satisfied with both the service and the overall atmosphere.
Ashok T — Google review
. While I had high expectations for the Thakali food, it unfortunately fell short in terms of flavor and authenticity. The dishes lacked the depth and richness typically associated with Thakali meals, and the presentation could have been better. On the positive side, the location of the restaurant was excellent. It was easy to find and situated in a pleasant area, making it a convenient spot for dining out. The ambiance was welcoming, and the staff were polite and attentive, which added to the overall experience.

Despite all the hype in social media, I found the reataurant fairly average. The ambience was nice and the music added to the vibe, but the food did not meet my expectations. The Thakali set was well-presented but it lacked flavor. Honestly, the only part that I somewhat enjoyed was the achars they served with the Thakali set. The service was also slow. We had to call the staff multiple times for refill. I hope they work on improving their food quality and service.
Mis B — Google review
I recently visited this resturant for lunch with my brother, and unfortunately, our experience was less than satisfactory. We ordered two Thakali sets and one grilled fish. Regrettably, the grilled fish was not fresh, and the Thakali sets were disappointing in terms of taste and quality. While the waitstaff were courteous and attentive, the experience was marred by the behavior of the cashier. After a bill total of ₹2035, we paid ₹2000 and were informed that ₹35 was a discount. However, when we asked for the discount, the cashier was rude and unprofessional. She insisted that she couldn’t void the bill and refused to process the discount, which was quite frustrating, especially considering that I work in the travel industry and am familiar with the process of voiding and reissuing transactions. Given the subpar food quality and the unpleasant interaction with the cashier, I would hesitate to recommend this restaurant. There is clear room for improvement both in the food and customer service

Just ordered the food , the food quality is so worse even the roadside stall will make better quality food. The sausage they use is of cheapest quality, chicken chilli with too much vinegar, momos the spice is pathetic, at least the over price you charge you are ethically bound to justify . This will be last order and visit to this place.

They have done fraud with us two times... for the first time we ordered veg thakali set for 495 and later said the price is 565 and forgot to mention the price and next time the waiter told us price of the item was 70 rs. and charged 200 later for the same saying the waiter didnot knew the price as he was new... total fraud...

Place was good but food was beyond worst, two issues occured, I found mint particles on my peach tea, for that they said , they didn't wash the utensils which was used to prepare my tea which was used to prepare mint drink before (but Idk how would they answer if someone was allergic to mint?) Grilled chicken was worst tasting my husband had stomach flu right after Masala cola seemed to have 3 spoons if masala (was too much) Regular water had a very bad smell and had an odd taste which is alarming issue I had also had veg momo and instantly knew they either steamed it together with non veg or used same tong or something to serve.. additionally I found nails idk if it was achar or momo but I found nails which was so gross!!( I was so frustrated and I threw the nail I mean who would keep it right but I could not just say this to them in person, but I believe everyone else should know this, 4 items ordered even regular water had an issue) And food is overly over priced I don't even want to begin on this!! Edited It was buffalo wings not grilled chicken bill is attached for your reference anyways my bad on that but please nobody insisted on having "sealed mineral water" they said oh ok and brought the regular water... also why are you serving contaminated water just because someone is not ready to buy whole bottle we didn't want to have whole bottle of water because eventually we wanted to order a drink which unfortunately had particles due to your hygiene and safety carelessness... Btw care to answer what about the nail I found on your momo????? Stop being so childish work on your feedbacks if you want your business to grow with positivity!

Alphabet Pizzeria offers a welcoming atmosphere, excellent service, and stunning scenery. As soon as you enter the restaurant, you are greeted by a pleasant ambiance. Whether you choose to sit near the window or on the terrace, the view is truly breathtaking. Their Special pizza and Peach tea come highly recommended. This hidden gem of an Italian eatery combines friendly hospitality, a delightful rooftop with a pond view, and delicious cuisine. From pasta to pizza, their menu is exquisite.
Amazing pizza, and the chocolate milkshake was good too! The pizza was almost like an Neapolitan pizza. You taste the difference in dough between a real Italian pizza and this one, but it was for sure the best I got in Nepal! I dare to say the dough has been rising for +24 hours or so, as it should be, otherwise the dough wouldn't be so fluffy and light on the stomach. I recommend!

Nice interiors, atmosphere and service, 7 min walk from Durbar square. And although the food looks good, the taste is average: I took a Caesar salad without meat ( can't taste the cheese, dried tomatoes just 4 dry pieces, the same amount of fresh ones, and i was just chew lettuce leaves with mayonnaise, which interrupts the whole taste) and pizza with vegetables, also did not cause delight. Good place to sit with laptop and work. Hope rest of their Food is good.

What a great find! We stumbled upon this place on a whim during a downpour and were immediately charmed by the cozy vibes. The staff were fantastic—so friendly and on the ball. The menu is massive, which is always a plus, and our food came out super fast. My only small critiques are that the carbonara portion was a bit small and the momo wasn't as juicy as I prefer. Still, the experience was absolutely worth it. Can't wait to return!

Chyasilin Mandap, also known as an octagonal pavilion in the local Newari language, is a historic structure located on the eastern side of Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Chyasilin Mandap literally means an octagonal pavilion in the local Newari language. Unfortunately for this pavilion, it's artistic wooden struts are being used to decorate the New Road Gate in Kathmandu, and plain wooden strut is in use in the pavilion. Hopefully, this octagonal pavilion gets back it's artistic struts.

This Chyasin Mandap was completely destroyed in the earthquake of 1934 A.D. The present structure was reconstructed in 1989 A.D., with the assistance of the German Government. It was reconstructed to commemorate the visit of Chancellor Helmut Kohl to Bhaktapur: Poke your head inside and note the earthquake resistant steel-beams on the lower level. There has been much controversy over their construction. Local craftsmen complained that these beams destroyed the ritual efficacy of the Mandap because the use of metal in temple construction is ritually prohibited, and that they should at least be covered in wood. And it is rumored that the American First Lady Hillary Clinton, when she was given a tour of the site also questioned their aesthetic value.

Statue of King Bhupatindra Malla

Sculpture
The Statue of King Bhupatindra Malla is a significant symbol in the city of Bhaktapur, Nepal. Born in 1674 AD, he ruled for 26 years and greatly contributed to the development of the region's arts and crafts. His influence on Newari culture is evident through his worshipful statue, dressed in traditional attire with folded arms worshipping the royal goddess Taleju.
King Bhupatindra is the most famous of all Bhaktapur's Malla kings, and he had great influence on the art and architecture of Newar culture. The Malla king sits with folded arms worshipping the royal goddess Taleju in the temple in front of him. He is dressed in the turban and court dress of the Malla kings, sword and shield by his side, his arms folded across his chest, an umbrella guarding him from the wind and sun. While Bhupatindra's statue was made in imitation of those in Kathmandu and Patan, it is perhaps the most beautiful of the three.

Til Madhav Narayan Temple

4.6
(13)
Hindu temple
Til Madhav Narayan Temple, located in the Tamaudhi tole behind the buildings at the south end of the square, is a significant place of pilgrimage and one of the best temples in the city. The temple houses an image installed in 1170 and is known for its historical importance.
Dedicated to Til Madhav Narayan, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the temple houses a unique idol characterized by three hands—a distinct departure from the typical four-armed depictions of Narayan. Flanked by statues of Garuda, a conch, and a wheel, the sanctum also features an idol of Lord Natyeshwor, believed to protect Til Madhav Narayan. The temple operates daily from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the priest performing Nitya Puja around 5:30 a.m. and Sandhya Aarati at 5 p.m. Notably, access to the inner sanctum is restricted; devotees and visitors are not permitted to enter or photograph the deity, preserving the sanctity of the space.

(Translated by Google) Til Madhav Narayan Narayan's name is Til Madhav Narayan located inside the square on the south side of Toumadhi. Til Madhav Narayan is located inside the attractive two-storied temple. Perhaps this temple is one of the oldest temples in the valley. This temple was built in Nepal Sambat 238 (year 1118) in Lichchavika. According to Hindu scriptures, one Narayan is worshiped every month. According to which, the worship of Shri Madhav Narayan is done in Dasau month (Magha month). In the month of January, sesame seeds are offered to Madhav Narayan. This Narayan was named Til Madhav Narayan because he used to chew sesame in this way. There are idols of Mata Lakshmi and Mata Saraswati on the right and left of Til Madhav Narayan. An idol of Lord Natyashwar has also been installed for the protection of Lord Til Madhav Narayan. The idol of Natyashwar was installed by the ancestors of Punyaprasad Mishra, which after it was stolen, a new idol of Natyashwar was installed again in Punyaprasad Mishra district. This Narayan idol is different from other Narayan idols. Other Narayan idols have four arms, but this Narayan idol has only three arms. There is a legend that earlier it had four hands, then when the Tibetans attacked, one of the hands was broken and the bees came out of the broken hand and the Tibetans ran away. Another difference in this Narayan is that there is also a person in the statue of this Narayan. Visitors from the valley as well as outside the valley (Panauti, Dhulikhel, Pharping) come here for darshan. On the day of Magh Sakranti, this Narayan is kept in ghee and four days later, ghee dali prasad is given to the son-in-law of this Narayan. It is also believed that wishes will be fulfilled by the grace of this prasad. It is also believed that those who do not have children will get children. Shri Madhav Narayan, who is worshiped at Hanumanghat (Kohre) of Bhaktapur in a month-long Sri Swasthani Vrat Katha from Pus Shukla Purnima, is this Til Madhav Narayan. From this place, the Nimitta of fasting is performed at Hanumanghat. Mount Sumeru, which is north of this temple, is very supernatural. At the top of which there is Narayan riding on Garuda, and below it there are Narayan worshiped in twelve months, ten Dikpals, Sumeru Parva, Barah Avatar, Shesha Nag. The food was not bad but it took quite long time to be served. On my first visit, I order a curry, two rotis(or naans) and the spring roll and I could see the spring roll after eating all the curry and naan. I was about to pay because I was sure they forgot my order for the spring roll but they said my food is being made so I was surprised. Anyway I've visited there 2 times and I felt the same feeling: Food is not bad but they should change the color of the lights inside.

Good food, has private space (rooms if not packed and/or compartments;), good customer service, waiting time is little bit and a little little bit costly for the food taste you'll eat, but has good space, so worth it. I have been going here since I was in class 9. Now I am in bachelors.
