Schwabisch Hall in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Schwabisch Hall, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Schwäbisch Hall is a well-preserved medieval town known for its half-timbered houses, narrow lanes and impressive marketplace set on the Kocher River. Its salt-trading past is explored in local museums, while St. Michael’s Church and its broad outdoor steps form a striking centerpiece often used for open-air performances. Art lovers can visit the Kunsthalle Würth and Johanniterkirche, which house notable modern and Old Master collections. The town also makes a good base for exploring the gentle landscapes and villages of the Hohenlohe region.
With favorites like Hotel Sonneck, Pulcinella Schwäbisch Hall, and Weinstube Weiler Tor, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Stadt-gut-Hotel und Gasthof Goldener Adler and Weinstube Weiler Tor so you can get the best taste of Schwabisch Hall while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Hohenlohe Freilandmuseum Schwabisch Hall Wackershofen is a well-preserved area with over 60 restored buildings that depict life in the Middle Ages. It offers a unique experience for those who have grown up in such an environment and is a great place to revisit memories and feel refreshed. The museum offers student discounts, free parking, and many activities to do. Payment can be made using maestro cards or cash since visa cards are not accepted.
Here, we get direct and detailed impressions of a German village and the life of its residents in 1945. No boundaries, you could directly touch and feel the furnitures, kitchenwares and working tools from different families. We spend a whole afternoon there, 10 euro ticket and 4 hours , totally worthwhile!
Weiqiang C — Google review
It's perfect for kids of all ages. Our son is now two and a half and has enjoyed it so much. The price is definitely worth it. There are only three playgrounds, which are really small, but you won't need them.
Oli B — Google review
An enjoyable visit to learn more about the old rural lifestyles in this part of Germany. There are many relocated buildings to explore and learn about how people used to live. At the end of our visit we enjoyed a good meal at the Red Ox.
Darren B — Google review
Charming farming village. It feels like we went back decades! Worth to get the headsets (out of charge, just a €20 bond and you’ll get it back at the end). You can hear the story about each place.
Rodrigo — Google review
Alway worth a visit - nice exhibition of old houses, good food and friendly staff. I would really recommend this place and encourage more people to come here. On of the best times to visit is the so called "Backofenfest" which is an event with a small market and a lot of great food spots.
Matze M — Google review
A wonderful experience filled with so many things that showed how life was, in Germany, over the years. A day well spent and I highly recommend this place.

Ok, not sure though how to react,it's well preserved area , nice walk on Sunday afternoon . It's different experience when one say it's a museum. May be for city kid it's will be surprising experience but it didn't impressed or amused me. Maybe because some part of my life I grew up in such environment. But still good to re-visit your memory n feel refreshed!!

Great place with lots to see and many things to do. Offers a student discount. Doesn't accept visa cards so make sure you bring cash of a maestro card for payment. Offers free parking.

The art on display includes pieces by renowned artists such as Holbein, Cranach, and Riemenschneider. Visitors can enjoy an up-close view of these masterpieces without barriers and admission is free.
We were very surprised by the beautiful church turned into a museum and what a wonderful collection of medieval paintings. Absolutely free, friendly staff. And the exhibition deserves to be presented in the best museums.

It was a nice surprise to find the “Darmstadt Madonna” painting by Hans Holbein the Younger here in such a small museum in a small town like Schwäbisch Hall. There was no admission fee to enter the museum.

St. Michael's Church is a must-see attraction in Schwabisch Hall, located right in the city center with its impressive tower and spacious square. Visitors can climb the bell tower for stunning views of the city, but should be mindful of the loud bells. The church boasts incredible historical architecture and hosts live theatrical plays on its steps during the summer. It's a beautifully restored building that showcases a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, with some chapels featuring Baroque decor.
St. Michael's...wow! What a beautiful church, inside and out. Make sure to climb the tower for amazing views of Schwabish Hall! They have live theatrical plays on the steps during Summer which is awesome. Great cultural learning.

medieval church from 1156 from romanesque to Gothic architecture. the building offers all. beautiful baroque side altars, tower visit, magnificent bell with a clock timing. large stairs with an open theater and amazing main altar. it is the main highlight of the town.
David A — Google review
Besides being a historical building with the greatest architecture, the staircase outside is used by the town as a stage for plays. Away from home and wanting to serve God with fellow worshippers, it was the most amazing sermon I have attended.
I B — Google review
Oh wow. Past amazing. Everything is so old! Be sure to go up the bell tower, just watch your times around the bells because it is loud!! The church is just amazing. Only downside is that very little is printed in English so if you're a tourist, be sure to use Google Translate

Stadt-gut-Hotel und Gasthof Goldener Adler

German restaurant
Stadt-gut-Hotel und Gasthof Goldener Adler is an elegant hotel located in the heart of Schwabisch Hall, just steps away from Ehemalige Gymnasium illustre and Saumarktturm. The hotel features a restaurant with a terrace where guests can enjoy delicious meals for lunch or dinner, as well as room service during limited hours. Additionally, amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi access and a vending machine are available for guests' convenience.
Fantastic stay at Stadt-gut-Hotel. Here's what you need to know if you're planning to stay there. First note, my review is for a 6-day stay during the first week of November. Secondly, this is a very, very old historic hotel and perhaps not for everyone. You do have to climb stairs to get to your room, and none of the walls or floors are straight in this hotel! The floors will creak everywhere you step. My room was on the second (3rd in NA standards) floor. The room was nice, clean, and comfortable, and I'd say basic. The bathroom was clean and functional as well, with lots of hot water. My room did not have a coffee maker or mini fridge and no USB charging points, so you'll need to bring your own charger. I strongly recommend including breakfast with your stay as it was one of the best experiences of my stay. The morning breakfast was simply outstanding, and every morning, I wished I had a second stomach so that I could sample everything. This hotel simply has the best location ever, and you can't put a price on that! Right in the heart of the town square and next to the historic church, you can walk anywhere to explore the town. The staff were very friendly, professional and helpful in every way. Check-in was very easy, and yes, you get an old-fashioned key for your room. The restaurant is very nice for food and drinks. You just need to make sure if they are open as they might be closed certain nights during off-season times. There are many options for hotels at Schwaebisch Hall, but none give you the experience of staying in a hotel built in the 1500s. This is a true opportunity to experience a historic sight in a prime location in the town. Highly recommended and a must visit hotel.
Armando S — Google review
Don’t miss out on being part of history by staying at this hotel built in the 15th century. The nostalgia is intense, location is perfect, rooms are modern enough, staff is super helpful and friendly. Plenty of parking and right across probably the best spot on Schwabisch Hall
Santosh S — Google review
I Had a lovely stay at the Goldener Adler in Schwäbische Hall. The staff was so helpful and professional. When I checked in, the woman at the desk carried my bags to my room. The room was spotless and comfortable. The breakfast was everything you could imagine and more. I would happily return on another visit.
Sarah S — Google review
While the food and decor were good. The service and general atmosphere were lacking. The serving lady was extremely rude and took an excessively long time to take our our orders and bring drinks.
Gareth M — Google review
Great place to stay at the bottom of the big stairs. Staff was excellent! We can highly recommend staying there.
Christian T — Google review
Charming and genuine old hotel dating back to the 16th century. Modernised to make our stay comfortable, yet still retaining much of the history of the building.
Malcolm D — Google review
It was a nice hotel located in a historical wooden frame building. Parking right in front of hotel. Dogs welcome. Room was decent, good size. Modern bathroom. Downside was no air conditioning, and it was needed in July. Breakfast was good, had enough to eat, although they don't refill, so take what you want or start earlier. Very friendly staff. Restaurant also located on site for traditional dinner.
Paul H — Google review
The food here was classic German cuisine. Duck, potatoes and bread rolls were delicious. The shower was the best ever! The temperature and pressure was perfect. The town center was quaint and cozy with its many little businesses. We highly recommend!

It was such a luxury to find this place today!. I was treated better than I would ever Imagine!. Oliver (the owner) took a seat on my table to showed me what food they had to offer. The treat was superb, ever so human, I was delighted to be there!, the food made with love, no more ingredients needed! A truly awesome place to go to! I will come back here as soon as I can! They offer, as an aperitive, proper olive oil with smashed olives from Italy (really high quality) if you you can tell from good olive oil!. THANK YOU!!!

Nice atmosphere, warm interior with cleverly made separations that give an intimate look. I like this kind of places having an older and personal style (although some may call it oudtated). Food was quite good, wine from average to excellent. For us it was a pleasant experience.

Fills your heart and belly with LOVE. Feels like going to Grandma's for food that is good for your soul. This was my first time having Schnitzel with Spätzle, the breading was crunchy and delicious, the sauce lovely. But what really stole my heart was the Sauerbraten with purple cabbage and homemade dumplings. WOW!!!! It was so beautiful and well balanced. The lovely woman who took great care of us (I believe an owner) paired it perfectly with Dunkelgraf Trocken, a Cabernet Dorsa by Furstenfass. The food and service are top notch!

Whether you're craving pizza, European specialties, vegetarian delights, or Mediterranean cuisine, this place has something for every palate. Very good food but if you call they say they are booked out but later will be free and then you can here in the background how a guy says “just say we are booked out all evening”. That’s already highly questionable. But then I asked and we got the reservation. I asked for children dishes and she said we can make a small portion of noodles with butter. I said yes. Later they charge 9€ for that. The staff is quite rude too.
