Restaurant
Hidden in the historic Mafra Old Town, João da Vila Velha is a remarkable dining spot that remains relatively unknown among the locals. It's advisable to make a reservation as this place is incredibly popular. They offer their own branded stout (which was superb!) and a wide variety of local wines from the Mafra region. The menu showcases beautifully crafted local dishes and boasts an outstanding staff who provide exceptional service.
We had a wonderful meal here. Family owned Portuguese restaurant with options for every taste. The javali was wonderful and so was the vegetarian dish. Loved how the vegetarian was a variety of flavors, well presented and delicious. Highly recommend! Great place to come after a visit to the Mafra palace.

Food: every dish tastes great- I must highlight the razor clam rice, and as a razor clam lover, it was cooked perfectly and this is the only place that make razor clam dish in our 1 month trip in Portugal. If you like shellfish this is must try! Service- mixed feelings. Although the waitress was nice and efficient, the waiting process for a table of 6 (with young kids) couldn’t have handled better: We were told to wait 20-30 mins, ended up waiting over an hour. Not completely the fault of the restaurant, but coincidentally 1 or 2 customers occupied tables for 6 and won’t leave even they have finished their meals being inconsiderate- just keep talking or looking at their phone. The owner/waitress couldn’t have provide bill and politely inform those customers that others are waiting for the table. This could’ve been our best meal (food quality for sure)in Portugal except the waiting table process must improve
Jem C — Google review
We loved our lunch here. The food was the best we’ve eaten in Portugal by far and the service was friendly and efficient.
Nerida A — Google review
We had a great experience with the Portuguese traditional cuisine. Beautifully cooked sea bass and great sides as well. We easily overcame the language barrier of English 😁

Highly recommended. Mr Joåo is a master chef. His granddaughter was very helpful. Made our experience excellent. I recommend making a reservation. It gets busy. Thank you so much
Adel K — Google review
The quality/price ratio is good and probably one of the best restaurants in the region in terms of good, homemade food. The staff is friendly and the portions are well served although some dishes have almost twice as much side dishes than the protein. I believe that the menu has too many options and one third would be more than enough. They compensate the large menu by having a considerable percentage of the dishes having the same sides. In fact, I had so many different sides that my Madeirense skewer had three types of potatoes. The açorda was also tasteless and the cabage needed more vinegar. My point is that this approach does not make any dish special (besides the stews) and could highlight the protein better with specific side dish choices rather than ten sides besides the protein. I have had Galinha Mourisca and Wild Boar Chanfana last time and the dishes were unique and very good. However, if you want grilled meat/fish, the protein loses its highlights and does not pair perfectly with all the sides. The dessert was nice. We had Lemon Pie but it lacked a bit of lemon acidity and had to much merengue on top. I do recommend the place but not to have grilled protein or fish with rice/noodles.
Tomás A — Google review
Great traditional restaurant, not easy to get in if you came after 8. Food is very well prepared and plenty, prices are moderate. Very nice staff.
Alexander B — Google review
Tucked away in Mafra Old Town is this fantastic eatery which could be the best kept secret among the Mafrense. Book a table to avoid disappointment as this establishment is incredibly popular. They have their own label stout (which was excellent!) A wide selection of local wines from the Mafra region, beautifully made local menu items.... And some of the nicest serving staff we have met! We tried and really enjoyed the Wild Boar chanfana, the grilled wild boar, the Bacalhau a lagereiro, the grilled turkey breast and the picanha. The main meals were good, but the stars of the show were the desserts. 10 starts for the best Bolo de Bolacha in Portugal! The lime mousse is fresh, light, creamy and moreish whilst the almond tart was heavenly. Thank you for a fantastic meal, we hope to become regulars!

Nestled in the heart of Mafra, Pastelaria Fradinho is a beloved local gem that beckons visitors after a stroll around the nearby Palace and Convent. Known for its signature pastry, the Fradinho—named after its founder Francisco Fradinho and thought to be linked to the convent—this charming bakery offers an impressive array of both sweet and savory treats.
Really tasty desserts! Deserving of a stop when visiting Mafra, extremely low prices for the quality of service and goods provided. Recommended 100%

Here you can grab a cake and coffee as well as other savoury items to eat. There is a small amount of seating inside but outside there is also places to sit.
Virgilio F — Google review
Great bakery with lots of food options. Daily special was rice with octopus. Outdoor dining near by as well as indoor seating.
Paul R — Google review
Bread, pastries, cakes, hot and cold drinks. Loved sitting at the terrace with the amazing view towards the palace and basilica. Self service at the terrace but it’s not marked anywhere, we only realized it after 10m. Pastries were fantastic, fresh and full of flavors. Average prices. Nice staff.
Carolina C — Google review
Lovely bakery right across the street from Mafra Palace! It was packed but it didn't take long to get our order.
Linda C — Google review
The pastries are decent. Nothing special and their travesseiros aren't anywhere near the level of Sintras, but it was a good snack
Alan T — Google review
Fradinho speciality should be your must if you are here. Some can say the make best Pastel ever. But it is next universe. They have ten times more tiny bread and they put nuts and risenes inside. It is best ever sweet cake I have tried for years.
К З — Google review
Terrible service! Waited for 20 minutes at the terras and had to go inside to ask if they had terras service. They say you have to order inside but there is nothing that points to that. Inside the girl felt the need to go and clean tables ( All but 1 empty) before taking my order. Also you have to pay 0,05€ per item for sitting outside. When sitting the girl came out and took orders from other clients. When I spike to her about it she was very rude and unapologetic and claimed that it was my responsibility to read the notes inside the Cafe when sitting outside! She also said that the 0,05€ were because there is a view to the palace!!! After she kept helping other clients and complaint about me to another clients. If I was her boss I would fire her on the spot. The pastries are not what they used to be! Quality has decreased a lot!

Pastry shop
Nestled in the charming district of Mafra, Pastelaria Polo Norte is a beloved bakery that has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. With four locations to choose from, this establishment specializes in crafting traditional Portuguese pastries that are sure to evoke fond memories. Their pasteis de nata stand out with a delightful crispiness on the outside and a rich, creamy filling that makes them an absolute must-try. For those on the go, you can even find these delectable treats at Lisbon Airport.
I really appreciate the wide choice of different pastries and good coffee. Queijada de Sintra - top! The pastelaria is close to the National Palace and could be a good place to grab a coffee and discuss the palace tour.

What can I say??? This is a 5-star bakery. The food is excellent! The staff is the best! They are the nicest people. My sons travel far and wide just to get the best baked goods in all of Portugal.
Angie M — Google review
The “pastéis de nata” from Pastelaria Polo Norte, also available at Lisbon Airport, are a convenient option if you’re craving this classic Portuguese pastry on the go. While they may not be the absolute best, they’re still quite enjoyable, with a nicely crisp puff pastry shell and a smooth custard filling. The taste leans a bit on the sweeter side for my preference, but overall, they’re a solid choice, especially if you’re looking for a quick treat before a flight or to take back home for you and your family.

Located directly in front of the National Palace, there were concerns that Espaço P might be a tourist-trap. However, due to time constraints, a visit was necessary. To our delight, the experience turned out to be delightful. We indulged in scrumptious scrambled eggs with sausage, a traditional meat dish and exceptional prawns. The meals were served promptly and with warm hospitality.
We ate here and the best meal. 3 different meals and all 3 were excellent. My wife rated her Sangria as the best of our 2 week vacation in Portugal.

Delicious food! Sword fish with green sauce was amazing! Stuff is friendly. Good view to the palace.
Mary L — Google review
I recommend getting the Portuguese menu even though there’s an English one, there are options on the Portuguese not on the other. The staff was very helpful and patient in guiding us to make authentic choices, all 3 of my kids were happy and so was my wife!
Joshua M — Google review
Very nice please. Good meal with good prices. Soup was really tasty. Also fast and nice service. Just a little too small for the number of tables leading us to be to close to the other people. Recommend
Joaquim C — Google review
We sat down in a table that looked available. The waiter was quite rude telling us this it was reserved. We had 2 small kids with us. He proceded to make a comment “ninguem se senta sem a mesa estar posta” to us and a group that had just arrived. I politely tried to ask if he had tables for 4. He walked straight past us without giving us an answer in a rude way. Dont treat people like this, specially with small children. We honestly didnt know the table were reserved and we were just looking for a place to have lunch. Let down.
Nicole E — Google review
I was here with my class and we had 45min to eat. We told the staff our predicament and they told us what the fastest options were and were overall really helpful. The food was also great!

Directly in front of the National Palace so I was afraid it would be a tourist-trap. But we had to eat here coz we were in a hurry. Turned out to be a lovely meal — scrambled eggs with sausage, traditional meat dish and outstanding prawns!!! All served with a smile and quickly!!!

Waiter didn't understand order, had to be corrected twice, they charged us for all mistakes. Didn't want to pay, angry unfriendly owner however very friendly younger staff gave in and changed bill. Food mediocre. AVOID

With its modern and stylish decor, this café creates an inviting ambiance perfect for those who enjoy quality food in a chic setting. Great cafe. Gorgeous cakes and pastries. Friendly and helpful service. The breakfast toast (quite a Portuguese thing apparently) was amazing: gorgeous bread, smothered in lashings of salted butter. What a treat! The pastries and sweets were delicious. There’s also a restaurant upstairs, which we didn’t go to. But it must be good if the cafe is anything to go by. Worth going to if you’re visiting the area around the palace.

Cozy café with a nice atmosphere. I had a coffee and a slice of pistachio cake — everything was tasty. Although the edge of the cake was a bit dry, the overall flavor was very good. The coffee was great as well. Friendly staff and fast service. Excellent value for money. Definitely recommend!

Pastelaria Pão da Vila is a popular spot located on the central square in Ericeira, known for its delicious food at reasonable prices. It's a great place to enjoy a sweet breakfast or grab a quick meal any time of day. The extensive menu offers various options including pizza, burgers, and baked goods of good quality. While it may not offer the best dishes in town, the friendly staff and affordable prices make it worth visiting.
This traditional Portuguese bakery is an absolute must-visit! Here, you can try their famous hot Pastéis de Nata—crispy, creamy, and freshly baked to perfection. They are simply irresistible! If you’re looking for a sweet souvenir, you can also take them home in beautiful packaging, making it a thoughtful and delicious gift. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the staff is always helpful. Don’t miss this place if you want to experience the true taste of Portugal. Highly recommended!

I was delighted to discover a restaurant and café on the central square in Ericeira called Pão da Vila. The exact address is: Praça da República 12, Ericeira, but you can’t miss it. Pão da Vila is popular with tourists and locals, and the restaurant has delicious food items on its extensive menu, all at reasonable prices. It is busy all year around. The business is obviously well run by an efficient manager, and the waiters and waitresses, many of whom speak passable or good English, are courteous and efficient. The chefs really know how to cook. Some of the best fresh soups are made here daily. Yesterday I ate a large bowl of puréed vegetable soup and today it was watercress soup, for only 1.40 €. Two nights in a row I ordered hamburgers: Angus beef with Cheddar cheese, bacon, mushrooms, radicchio, onion and tomato and served with hot, crispy French fries served with a garlic mayonnaise. Coffees and teas are available, of course, but you may also order cocktails, beers, sodas, freshly-squeezed juices or various bottled mineral waters. Whenever you decide to eat, whether for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner, you won’t be disappointed. There is a huge LG flat-screen television on the back wall for watching sports and other programs. There is usually a low hum of background noises and conversations, but it is not usually an annoyance. Pão da Vila also has delicious deserts and pastries, and there is a pleasant outdoor sitting area facing Praça da República. The tables have umbrellas to shade you from the bright sun or any rain. Credit cards are accepted.

The breakfast was really nice and good value. However, what let’s this place down is the service - on this occasion and another for a drink in the afternoon - it was near impossible to get any service. They’ll actively avoid making eye contact or coming over to the table and so you are forced to resort to walking to the bar each time. It’s painful.

If you're on the hunt for a delightful gelato experience, look no further than Gelataria Blue Ice. This charming spot has quickly become a favorite among locals and visitors alike, thanks to its rich and flavorful offerings. The dark chocolate gelato is often hailed as one of the best around, while other popular flavors like watermelon and strawberry also steal the show.
Been here few times and every time i am welcomed with a big smile. I feel like i am taken care of. Oh and the ice cream is very-very good. My favourite flavours are watermelon and strawberry. Also a good place to have a creppe with ice cream 👌👌

Great ice cream shop with a good choice of sorbets. Probably the best pistachio flavour I’ve had after trying several dozen in various places.

What a great place for homemade ice cream 🍦, sorbets, ouriços and queques. Very clean and the service is congenial. I highly recommend this shop but be prepared to wait when the weather is pleasant...so worth the wait!

Large gelateria with waffles etc on the menu. But we didn't like flavor or texture of the ice cream, so much so that the kids didn't even want to finished theirs - never seen that before...

Nestled in the charming coastal town of Ericeira, Nutwood Gelataria is a must-visit for ice cream enthusiasts. Renowned for its exceptional flavors, this gelateria offers an array of homemade delights that will tantalize your taste buds. The strawberry sorbet is particularly noteworthy, especially during peak season when strawberries are at their freshest. For those seeking something unique, the Alfarroba and figs flavor comes highly recommended by fans.
Best ice cream in town! We kept coming back to this one after day one. They have super delicious fresh ice cream with vegan (sorbet) options. They keep offering different flavors. Make sure you check this one out during your stay in Ericeira!

Really great home made ice cream. Delighted we picked this place based on the excellent reviews. We had 4 different cones and my wife particularly enjoyed the pineapple.

Very n'ice' creams. The staff was very kind. The flavours are very well balanced between intensity and sweetness. The waffle is a must try.
Jorge S — Google review
Probably the best strawberry sorbet I’ve ever had Simply the best! The best ice-cream we’ve had in Portugal after visiting for 8 years and trying everything in sight! The name scared us slightly, as my son is allergic to nuts. However, the owner assured us that it was named after the road of the first shop. We had a couple of scoops in a cup each, after the last dropped cone episode. On tasting our nut allergy friendly son’s mango and strawberry sorbets, we did a double take. And tried again. He was not happy. Why? It was that good and we weren’t sure we had tasted right! We tasted a few others, but ended up with strawberry sorbet as it was probably one of the best we’ve ever had. The owner explained that it was only made From local strawberries which were in season and that her flavours were seasonal. We savoured our various desserts slowly and then my wife did something she had only done once before in the 10 years we’ve been together- she went back for more. Life is too short. My son wanted to try something else, and the proprietor was kind enough to serve him from a batch of butter salted caramel which she had just finished which would avoid any cross contamination with nuts. He loved it, slightly on the sweet side for me. Since my wife went back, it gave me a welcome excuse to do the same and I chose the ‘coffee break’ - a combination of coffee, biscotti and chocolate - what a choice! One of the best I’ve made in a gelateria. Once my wife tasted mine, she did so a few more times to my disdain:(. If we ever return to Ericeira, this is a must visit…or we might be swayed to return to Ericeira thanks to NUTWOOD.

At The Original Nut Shop, dessert lovers can indulge in a delightful experience. The waffles are a standout treat, offering fantastic flavor and satisfaction. However, the churros may leave some wanting more, as they tend to lack the robust taste and texture one might expect. That said, generous portions paired with ice cream and Nutella create an enjoyable sweet ending to any meal.
The waffle was fantastic, although the item we wanted most, the churros, were a bit empty. We hoped for a more substantial taste and texture and instead it was rather bland. but the portions were good and with ice cream and nutella, there's not much to dislike. A great dessert after a local meal.

This is the reason reviews can't be trusted. This is currently scoring a 4.3 so we obviously went in for crepes. The worst I've ever eaten. Tasteless, chewy, elasticky. The chocolate sauce is also disgusting and just tasted like sugar, not chocolate. Really really bad.
João J — Google review
Good crepes, the churros aren't churros but are okay. The thing is that I saw how he sprayed an insect jus above the crepe machine and then started to do them (not very cool lol)
Ferca — Google review
Good food with really bad service. The girl who’s usually there on the weekend refuses to serve anyone 15 min before the closing time. Once, the excuse was that there wasn’t any crepes left, the second time made me wait 5 min while she was texting and the third time said the store was closed (it wasn’t even 10:15pm)

Good crêpes, fast and nice service, though I do not recommend the churros (not churros). Not the best hygiene 😬

Raw churros drowned in sugar powder , no flavour . It just blows my mind you have two products and can’t even come close to how a real churros is supposed to be . Tourist trap at best .

Ice cream shop
Gelatommy in Ericeira is undoubtedly the finest ice cream shop in town. After exploring numerous other options, I stumbled upon this gem while searching for tiramisu ice cream. And boy was I fortunate! Gelatommy offers some of the most remarkable ice creams I have ever tasted. The owner, an Italian who has been residing in Portugal for 18 years, brings true authenticity to his gelato creations.
Hands down the best gelato, even competes with gelato we found in Italy! Apparently this spot is owned by an Italian and imports specific ingredients from Italy for the most perfect scoop one could possibly ask for. Don’t overlook the pistachio flavour. We got delicious coffee too. Great price for the exceptional quality. There was lovely lady behind the counter who helped us and told us a bit more about the shop. Worth a visit, we’ve been back a few times for the exact same order. Vibey street side environment, a great post beach stop.
