Le Mans in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Le Mans, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Le Mans combines a beautifully preserved medieval old town with its global fame as the host of the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. Visitors can wander the cobbled streets of the Cité Plantagenêt, lined with half-timbered houses and the impressive Saint-Julien Cathedral. The city’s museums, including the Musée des 24 Heures, showcase both automotive history and local heritage. Its location in the Sarthe region also makes it a convenient base for exploring the surrounding countryside and riverside landscapes.
With favorites like KFC, LA BOÎTE A PIZZA Le Mans, and Museum of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like KFC and Restaurant l'Auberge de Bagatelle so you can get the best taste of Le Mans while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Car racing venue
The Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans is a legendary venue that has become synonymous with the iconic endurance race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Since its inception in 1923, this prestigious event has captivated motorsport enthusiasts around the globe, showcasing an extraordinary test of skill and endurance for both drivers and their vehicles. The circuit features a unique blend of permanent track and public roads, allowing fans to experience the thrill up close.
A dream come true. A beautiful track, record crowd (352k strong!) and a great show put on by the drivers and teams. Lovely atmosphere and city. A must if you’re a fan of endurance racing!
Seiya A — Google review
When I went the museum was not open, so there was a temporary exhibition on the Southern entrance of the circuit. You can visit the beautiful and iconic machines that lapped around the mythical circuit. The circuit is also available to visit, you can walk all the way up to the Dunlop.
Elliot D — Google review
Great experience as always, be careful though: reserving a spot in disabled parking does NOT reserve an actual spot in the parking (P7E) you choose. This is not a joke and apparently “normal” according to the guard. What is normal though, is that their suppliers block several spots in disabled parking (I have photos of the trucks). ACO doesn’t seem to care about disabled people attending, sadly. Massive thanks to the lady at P2A for helping me and letting me leave my car there when I explained the situation, and the guard at P2B for finding out she can help.

First time driving in France. As soon as the ferry landed at ostreheim, driving here was a doddle. One of the bucket list places now ticked. It's a must if your a petrol head. Some of the staff speak English. The museum shop is worth a browse. Will be back one day! Thanks to all the staff for there guidance, even though my broken French!
Callum P — Google review
Interesting museum. Unfortunately, our visit coincided with a lot of external building work around the outside of the museum. The shop was closed and there didn't appear to be cafe, just some vending machines. However, the museum is very well laid out and interesting.
David C — Google review
Lemans classic was a really good event, stayed in Bejour campsite and it was a little walk but the bust made it easy. Good racing all weekend and a very well run event so much to see. Food was available regularly and drinks too, we did struggle to find water in the campsite but once found was easy to get, car access was easy but could que if you was in rear of campsite. Good event all tickets done by phone app
Joe R — Google review
A top museum to visit if your into cars / bikes and the history of Le Mans. Easy access for everyone. Reasonable prices, nice shop. Small vending machine and coffee after but no real food available. Parking opposite the museum is free for cars and bikes. I would recommend visiting
Mark C — Google review
Great place to visit and soak up the historic atmosphere of the 24h race. We were just passing through and managed to visit the museum, main circuit entrance and most importantly drive along the Muslanne straight in addition to Arnarge 😀

Specialty Museums
The Museum of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is a captivating showcase of the prestigious history of the Le Mans car race. With over 120 vehicles on display, including 40 race-cars that have competed in the event, this museum offers an immersive experience for enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. The collection features iconic cars like the Porsche 919, Moby Dick, and Mazda 787B. Visitors can also enjoy audiovisual displays and learn about various drivers and teams associated with the race.
Very cool museum experience, an incredible archive of automotive legends laid out very thoughtfully. We pre purchased tickets and went on a weekday afternoon and it was very quiet and enjoyable. You can appreciate all the decades of racing as you walk through the displays. Free parking across the street, the walk of the track you can probably live without unless you are a hardcore enthusiast, the museum is very cool.
J K — Google review
There is a temporary display of 10 cars ONLY. The ticket costs 8 Euros for 10 min temporary museum. They said they are working on a renovation during the summer, but of course they still charge the same exact amount as a normal day ticket. So save yourself the driving experience and just watch the photos here. THAT'S ALL. The receptionist were friendly and told us it would take 30 min. But honestly everything could be seen in 5-10 min only.
Al T — Google review
We visited the museum during an especially long red flag at the 24 hours of Le Mans race (at around midnight). An excellent decision given the rich history within the museum. It covers historical fact about some of the great names in the sport (Ford, Ferrari, Bugatti, Ickx). Shows antique cars/vehicles with some history of the development of automobiles in Europe, and then of course, decades of actual cars and championship cars from the races themselves. We could have spent more time just gazing into the vehicles and enjoying the atmosphere, but the race was restarting. This would be an awesome place to visit on a non race day just to wander and look.
Graham T — Google review
While I don't typically follow sports cars or the Le Mans tour, this museum's uniqueness is undeniable. It's packed with incredible sporting cars, showcasing vehicles from the 24h Le Mans and other races. I found it truly amazing and well worth the visit.

At the moto GP 24 h circuit we visited the museum. Big ques as the racing was on and record numbers attended. The museum is brilliant we loved the whole experience. Very well run with such big numbers. Facilities are good and accessible The gift shop has some lovely gift ideas and memorabilia bring your credit card it's pricey...
Ann M — Google review
Small temporary exhibition, but with some incredible cars over two floors. Access to the track is a must when you visit - try finding a day with a track day so you have something to watch.

Lovely and fascinating museum. Homage is given to the founding family, of the motor car industry in France and motoring hero’s over the years. Well worth a visit.
Bernie K — Google review
A dream come true for any motorsport fan! The museum is a treasure trove of Le Mans history, showcasing legendary cars and the evolution of the iconic 24-hour race. However, I’d recommend contacting the museum beforehand—sometimes there are track days, and general visitors may not be allowed on the track, only in the museum. Plan ahead to make the most of your visit!

Antarès is a versatile indoor sports arena and cultural center in Le Mans, known for hosting basketball tournaments and pop concerts. It's conveniently located near public transportation, making it easily accessible for visitors. The venue has seen a variety of events, from musical concerts to sporting matches like MSB and Harlem Globetrotters. Might be ok for big music concerts but very soulless for the ballet which I went to see. Wanted to get a drink but long slow queue and wasn't impressed by the car parking situation. Who wants to walk through an unlit forest at night!! Not good. Don't think I'd go to another event here

The Royal Abbey of Epau, a 13th-century Cistercian abbey, has been meticulously restored and features stunning stone archways, stained glass windows, and well-manicured landscaping. This magnificent building exudes a powerful atmosphere and emphasizes beautiful architecture through its excellent maintenance. A recent visit featured a special Christmas light and sound installation that showcased both the old and new aspects of the abbey.
Really interesting. We had a guided tour in French and the guide gave interesting facts about the Abbey. There are lovely gardens to explore and a cafe that serves delicious, well presented meals. There are also the Candlelight concerts on certain evenings.

A beautiful peaceful place to visit just on the edge of the city. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The information panels all have an English translation on them and the kitchen garden is interesting. Look out for their special events, unfortunately I hadn't and consequently have missed out on one I would have loved to go to there. Plenty of, shady, parking and thoughtful layout for the less mobile of us!

The Royal Abbey of Épau, located near Le Mans, is a stunning example of Cistercian architecture, founded in 1229 by Queen Berengaria of Navarre. The abbey features impressive Gothic design with soaring vaults and delicate details, reflecting the grandeur of its time. Visitors can explore its well-preserved cloisters, chapter house, and refectory, providing a glimpse into monastic life. The tranquil gardens add to the peaceful atmosphere. With its historical significance and architectural beauty, the abbey is a must-visit for history and architecture enthusiasts.
Dani B — Google review
A beautiful old abbey where many interesting events take place. During Berengeria's time it was a church, but now people can visit the place anytime.
Вера К — Google review
A very underwhelming visit. The building is nice but it is a bit lacking in things to see. A lot of the rooms and the exhibits were closed when we were there. Expensive for what it is.
James W — Google review
Nice place, But entry fees I felt quite high for the place.
Mahesh P — Google review
The construction of the abbey was ordered by the wife of Richard Lionheart, yet nowadays little is left of the beauty this should have inspired. The abbey is a nice tranquil place outside of the business of le Mans, but a real abbey it is not. It was completely emptied during the French Revolution and never reinstated as an abbey. Nowadays everything is empty and to see an abbey here one will need some imagination. Luckily the information folder helps a bit with this, but it cannot fill the physical hole of missing things.

KFC Le Mans Hunaudières is a fast food restaurant well known among chicken-fanciers. It's located between the turn at the red triangle and the first slowdown of Hunaudières, making it one of the few restaurants located inside the circuit's boundaries. The usual KFC menu is available here.
Awesome place! Perfect yummy fast food. Very fast and staff speak English! Nobody around can do this))) these guys work every day until 12am and believe me, if you are one step away from death without food, they are the only one who can save you in this hood!

Perfect! They speak English and they were the only one who worked today even though it was federal holiday and everything was closed even supermarkets and gas stations! They literally saved us. We were starving and almost dead. Thank you to the team for running business and willing to WORK! We will make this place our 'go to' when we are here next time.

As you would expect from a KFC. Food was served prompt. This KFC has a drive through option. Food was hot. Staff friendly. Prices reasonable. Seating areas were clean. I would recommend. Parking is free and there is a seating area outside. One of the better ones in my opinion

Avoid this place at all costs! Very aggressive interaction with the chef after I sent a burnt steak back, which he’d agreed was bad quality meat so could not cook it to my medium well requirement. Opted for the same fish dish as my partner, which took over 20 mins to arrive, after cancelling the order with the waiter, it arrived but was the wrong dish so sent it back and ordered the bill. The chef wanted us to pay for the fish which I’d ordered, which was incorrect, and invited us into the kitchen to discuss. We explained what happened and he became aggressive, marched out of the kitchen shouting and tried kicking us out and saying don’t come back here. I insisted we pay for what we had. Much nicer places in Le Mans that are worthy of your money. €200+ euros lighter, left hungry, ruined anniversary, but with a story to tell!

Wonderful little amusement park with many attractions. The biggest plus is that there are not many people! No need to wait to ride the attraction

When we pay €21.50 we may say that we expect something from this park, sadly there are very bad and slow operations, it was a busy day so pump up the speed from loading and unloading the attractions.. staff (mostly children) does not look interested in their job. Many parts from the park look like they can use a lot of love from the owner, go for it! To the owner after his professional reaction: we understand that the core business are children and families, but as coaster, themepark and funfair lover we are visiting (little) parks all over the world, and we had this feeling like I explained. But hey, thanks for the reaction 👍 and we only place this comments to make your park better! See you in a few years when (or if) you have more rides like Cyclone! Have a nice day! Kim.

Good park for younger children - age 6-10/11. Park was quite busy on a Monday in August, waiting around 20minutes for the busy rides. Food and drink very expensive but that is always the case. It is quite expensive in my op opinion but I think if you aim to spend the full day there then it may be worth it. Has a swimming pool/slides so don’t forget costumes if you want to do this. Also has the slowest train ride I’ve ever seen.

Specialty Museums
Nestled in the charming city of Le Mans, the Musée de Tesse is a delightful treasure trove for art and history enthusiasts alike. Housed in a former Episcopal palace, this venerable gallery boasts an impressive collection of classical French, Italian, and Flemish paintings alongside captivating artifacts from Ancient Egypt. The museum's Egyptian exhibit is particularly noteworthy; it features around 125 pieces donated by explorer Edouard de Montule in the early 19th century.
It was free to enter and has lots of good art pieces. Recommended :)
Beril T — Google review
Our trip did not afford us the time to enter so we only saw this museum from the outside.
Graham T — Google review
Very nice staff at the front desk free admission the Egyptian exhibit is quite interesting free audio guide, which helps temporary exhibit has nothing in English, so really couldn’t get much out of it if you’re in the area it’s definitely worth a stop since there’s no charge and they have some interesting paintings I’m sure there’s something for everyone.

Awesome collection of painting and sculptures. The entrance was free. There are Egyptian artifacts in the basement. It's a multi level museum. The entrance is free.

I freely admit we ended up in this museum by mistake (confusing it with the archaeological museum) but I loved it! We went on a Sunday, so it only cost 2.50 to get it and we had the place to ourselves. I enjoyed the paintings in the galleries but the highlight were the Egyptian 'tombs' in the basement. Such a lovely recreation and really atmospheric. They also have an original book of the dead, canoptic jars and sarcophagi! Loved it!

The Cathedral of Saint Julian of Le Mans is a magnificent Gothic masterpiece known for its stunning stained-glass collection, intricate flying buttresses, and impressive High Gothic choir. Located in the old town of Le Mans, this historical gem surprises visitors with its understated yet awe-inspiring exterior, featuring a sequence of bifurcating flying buttresses encircling the apse.
This is a truly stunning building and absolutely has to be visited to admire the amazing achievements of all concerned in its construction dating from the 4th to 15 centuries. As you enter the building then coldness hits you , I assume due to the thickness of the walls and not so much glass also it was close to winter when I visited . I walked around the building in complete awe of the impressiveness of such a building , the organ is just unbelievable , the alter is so impressive as is all the structural pillars lining the building . Entry and exit doors are massive . Simple wooden chair seating throughout the church . The stained glass windows are so impressive especially when the daylight radiates through them . Definitely worth a long visit .

La Nuit des Chimères is known for its stunning nighttime light projections, but visiting during the day offers a different perspective. Without the illuminated spectacle, you can appreciate the historic beauty of Le Mans' Cité Plantagenêt in its natural state. The medieval architecture and charming streets still make for an enjoyable visit, even if the magic of the night is missing
Shashikant T — Google review
Beautiful cathedral with the outside spectacular on the side of the large square and a bit dull on the other side. Construction began in the 11th century in the Romanesque style, of which the nave and some stained glass windows remain. In the 13th century, large Gothic extensions were made. There are many beautiful stained glass windows. Most striking is the 13th century Lady Chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary.. It was built by Queen Berengaria, widow of Richard the Lionheart, for which she got permission to break through the outer wall. On the ceiling is a concert of angel musicians, and there are beautiful stained glass windows with sometimes funny details (look good)
Seimen B — Google review
Breathtaking in both its size and beauty. We only had a quick visit here but you could spend hours looking at all the architecture and details it has. The area around the Cathedral is also very charming. Just remember this is France so pick your day if you want shops etc to be open.
John S — Google review
Nice cathedral, especially watching it from the bottom with a very special perspective.
Manucsn — Google review
Truly a stunning looking Cathedral, especially the massive flying buttresses. We walked around to get views from every angle, but did not enter. In addition to the buttresses which I found to be its most distinguishing feature, this cathedral has rich carvings around the main entranceway, which are seem in the film De Bergerac with Girard Depardieu (where he had a fight scene). We also found two roman menhirs propped up against the walls in a hidden corner off to the side.
Graham T — Google review
It's huge! No one shaking a 'tin', no shop just a moment of quiet contemplation in a room with amazing glass stained windows. Added bonus, when it's warm, it's a cool building in all meanings of the word. We had an amazing lunch in Cafe du Jet D'Eau.
Louise C — Google review
Amazing place to visit, beautiful windows and architecture. Be respectful in the vicinity of the Cathedral, but enjoy the place. There are written guides in several different languages available to help you understand the history of the building. There is also an exhibition explaining the history and development of the Cathedral. This place has important history and is very much part of the history of Nomandy France and Britain.

Café Du Jet D'eau is a beloved local gem nestled next to the Cathedral, right at the base of the Escalier du Jet d'eau. This charming café holds a special place in the hearts of residents, especially after its triumphant reopening in 2015, which was met with much joy. It's an ideal spot for market-goers to unwind and soak up the vibrant atmosphere while enjoying a delightful lunch—don't miss out on their popular oysters!

Spent a few hours there with a few ciders, all ok until the waiter plonked a reservation sign on my table with no explanation, on enquiring I had 30 minutes to drink up, won’t be back there for sure. Rubbish. Had a lovely welcome at other establishments.

Restaurant
Chez Henri 1970 is a charming restaurant located in a vibrant area with numerous bistros and brasseries offering traditional dishes. The restaurant is known for its fresh products and excellent wine selection, particularly the hillsides of Layon. While the service may not always be fast, it is impeccable, reflecting the care taken in preparing the food. The beef dishes are especially delicious and tender, and the daily menu offers great value for money.

(Translated by Google) The beef is delicious! Excellent cooking, so tender and tender! Cheese plate a little high price level (7€) for what is on the plate. Then the boss I think is perhaps a little too familiar, comfortable with customers giving nicknames (my darling, my princess, bichette and so on..) it may remain funny for a while but some customers may not like it. The restaurant is pretty.

(Translated by Google) Restaurant where you eat very well (compliments to the chef and his team!) but where you don't have to be in a hurry. The organization in the room leaves something to be desired even if the staff is friendly. What saved our meal (we came in the evening) was really the quality of the food, the meat was delicious and the Baulois fondant is a must-try! The plates are well presented and the flavors are there. Despite everything, the price is a little high compared to the quality of service. Perhaps we should prefer to come at lunchtime.

Note: It is very rare to find tables where the plates combine aesthetics, quality and generosity, the proof in pictures… thank you chef! (Translated by Google) AUGUST 27, it's a pleasure to find an open restaurant, what's more, welcomes you with a magnificent terrace, and a summer air for your evening. Knowing that it is better to book is obvious. The tuna a la plancha is succulent, the beef carpaccio delicious, the chef is an ace! The prices are a bit high, but the quality and the setting are worth it. Is the boss rough? But all in all we prefer that all the hypocritical coos served, on demand, elsewhere. A special thank you to the student waitress, Albanian, charming, efficient, for whom tipping takes on its full meaning...A well-known, referenced address, obviously to be recommended without asking any questions!

Haute French restaurant
Le Grenier à Sel is a distinguished French fine dining restaurant known for its refined cuisine prepared with passion by the Michelin-starred chef, showcasing regional and seasonal ingredients. Guests can savor exquisite dishes with delicate flavors presented with care and creativity in a tranquil dining room adorned with a rustic yet elegant ambiance. The soft, dim lighting creates an ideal atmosphere for intimate conversations, making it perfect for strengthening romantic bonds.
Professional, attentive and friendly service, good food with excellent ingredients well prepared and well presented. All in all, excellent value for money. Not so common these days: a good selection of goat cheeses, served at the right temperature i.e. not straight from the fridge. Very interesting wine list at a very attractive price (for wine lovers, do not hesitate to engage with the owner and he may surprize you with great and more exclusive wines that are not on the wine list...).

Very let down by this restaurant. We had looked forward to it and booked well in advance. We were delayed on our journey down to Le Man and tried to call the restaurant 4 times. Nobody bothered to answer. Then when we arrived they did not seem concerned that we had lost our booking and the customer service was VERY poor given we had tried to call but nobody was answering phones. Perhaps is a good restaurant but we were not given the opportunity to enjoy it. Very arrogant attitude. Not great…..

Absolutely Incredible! This place blew us away. The service was fast, friendly, and completely on point—some of the best we’ve ever had. The lobster was fresh and flavorful, the steak was cooked to perfection, and the soufflé… wow. Truly heavenly. Even the tea selection was top-tier. Every detail was thoughtful and flawless. Can’t wait to come back—already telling friends to go!
