Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the charming town of Elvas, Portugal, Elvas Castle stands as a magnificent testament to medieval architecture and history. Originally constructed by the Moors on Roman foundations, this impressive fortress has undergone several renovations since its inception in the 12th century. Visitors can explore its ramparts for breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and even catch glimpses of nearby Spain.
Located on the highest hilltop of the city, at approximately 320 meters above sea level, the castle features an irregular quadrilateral layout, surrounded by triple layers of defensive walls. The site originally served as a Roman military post in the 2nd century BCE. During the 8th to 12th centuries, the Moors significantly reinforced the fortifications. In the 13th century, under the reign of King Sancho II, the castle underwent major reconstruction. Following Portugal’s Restoration of Independence from Spain in 1640, the castle was extensively expanded and modernized in 1641, adopting contemporary military architecture to strengthen its defenses. It played a crucial role in the Battle of the Lines of Elvas (1659), serving as a key fortress during the conflict.

Located at the highest point of the city, Elvas Castle is an Islamic fortification, rebuilt in the 13th and 14th centuries. Its current appearance is from the 16th century. Over the centuries is ceased to have a military defensive importance, but hosted important events in the country's history, such as peace treaties, royal weddings and so on. It was restored and proclaimed in 1906 first Portuguese National Monument. Its possible to take a walk on the top of the walls, but when i arrived it was closed in the middle of the day, as most of the places in the city - be aware of that - 13-15:00 is a siesta time.

These photos represent the old central town of Elvas, including the church and the castle. It’s worth a stop if you’re driving by; it is beyond Evora and right at the border with Spain. I believe it was an important Castle because of its centrality in defending the country. If I’m not mistaken, it may be a star fort. It was a warm day and we enjoyed doing a little climbing.
Patrick ( — Google review
The view here is quite breathtaking. This castle is one of UNESCO’s world heritage and it is situated in a high place where you can view the whole landscape, walk through the streets back to the square, see the Miradouro, get a glimpse of beautiful plants (I actually loved the way the locals use recycled plastics as flower vases) and I saw the biggest sunflower ever. I visited on a Monday and the castle was closed. Hopefully when you visit (don’t make it a Monday morning) you might be able to go up the castle and catch a glimpse of Spain from the viewpoints.
Olú A — Google review
A small but charming castle with lovely views over Elvas and the surrounding landscape. It’s well preserved and makes for a pleasant short visit. A cute historic spot to explore and take photos.
Lilia S — Google review
The castle itself entrance was closed but that was okay I've seen many castles in Portugal ;). You're able to walk around the perimeter of the Castle with outstanding views.

Restaurant
Recanto de São Paulo is a charming restaurant in Portugal that offers an extensive selection of typical Portuguese dishes with flavorful herbs. The menu features excellent soups and starters, and guests can enjoy the delicious food along with a bottle of red wine for just 10 euros. The restaurant provides fantastic service and accommodates guests who speak Spanish or English, making it a welcoming place for international visitors. It's worth noting that some dishes are only available in pairs, so diners should be mindful when ordering.
great place to spend a dinner here. we were lucky to get in at 7:30pm as first guests without booking. Most of the tables were reserved. It was also a public holiday, so maybe that's the reason. we like their soup of the day, which was chicken soup with rice , chicken breast, onion, with an amazing touch of mint. I like it very much. The main courses we ordered were very generous. it was a fun night, and we also enjoyed a full house here.
Hsingyin C — Google review
The food was good, but the service was extremely disappointing. It felt as if they were deliberately being rude. They were pushing things around and handing over food with their backs turned, almost like we weren’t there. It made me question if we had done something wrong to deserve such treatment.
Jay M — Google review
Delicious authentic Portuguese food! Very busy so book ahead. They accommodated us with no reservation but all tables full or booked. Fast and very friendly service. Tried their best at English translation. Good atmosphere. Loved it!
S W — Google review
It was clean and they managed to find as a table. Those are the only positives. Food was not good, nobody speaks English.

A lovely find, looked closed but so we tried it The staff were welcoming and very helpful. We had the Piranha for 2 people, came with chips, rice, black beans and fried banana. The meat is sliced at the table, taken back to the grill and sliced again. Perfect. There were a mix a locals and tourists giving the restaurant a good vibe.

Great place for a typical Portuguese meal. Menu with plenty of choice. We had some starters and soups. The tomato soup with egg was absolutely delicious. Best tomato soup I've had. The staff attending to the tables were attentive and polite.

We stopped at a town on our way to Lisbon, we were getting desperate looking for a place to eat and after parking up we asked a lady who pointed us to this place. Fantastic service, and the food was absolutely amazing. Language barrier not an issue, they spoke to me in Spanish and English, made me feel very embarrassed I hadn't learned any Portuguese!!

We arrived at a very busy period during Sunday lunch, but managed to get the last table. Waited a while for our food, but well worth it and all freshly cooked. Also gave us a chance to check out the amazing looking food brought out to other diners. Don't miss out on eating here, the tomato and egg soup starter is worth a visit on its own👍

Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral, also known as Elvas Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral situated in the main square of Elvas, Portugal. The cathedral showcases stunning baroque architecture and features a Manueline south portal and 17th-century azulejos. Elvas itself is a historical city located in the Alentejo region of Portugal and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Opening times: opened every day, see photo for actual timings. Closed during the last weekend of every month. Occasionally closes on Sunday if there was a bank holiday during that week. Gorgeous ceiling, never seen anything like it.

Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is a former Cathedral of Elvas and was built in the first half of 16th century and lost its status as a cathedral in 1881. Its a Manueline style church but it lost its character during the years. Both side portal entrances are still clearly of Manueline style, and quite beautiful. Church inside is pretty simple, i loved the painted ceiling. The entire inside walls of the church are surrounded by polychrome tiles with lace and roses. Noteworthy is the huge organ in the upper choir. Worth to visit!

Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral Type: cathedral Time spent: 10 min Parking: available Bike parking: not available Price: free [!]Entrance: side door The Old Cathedral of Elvas is a religious building of the Catholic Church in Republic Square, in the parish of the Assumption in Elvas. The current building was erected in 1517 to replace a previous Gothic church. The opening for worship took place in 1537, with the works still unfinished. The general structure of the temple dates back to the Manueline period. The old Cathedral of Elvas was used as a place of prayer for the return of thousands of soldiers. In the 17th and 18th centuries, numerous stylistic changes were made that enriched the interior.

Built between 1517 and 1537 in the Manueline style by architect Francisco de Arruda, this church was constructed on the site of an earlier Gothic church. In 1570, with the establishment of the Diocese of Elvas, it was elevated to cathedral status. Following the suppression of the diocese in 1881, it reverted to a regular parish church. During the Portuguese Restoration War (1640–1668), it is believed to have served as a place of prayer for the safe return of soldiers, though the exact date or context of this role remains uncertain.

Historical landmark
Praca da República, located in Elvas, Portugal, is a charming town square that encompasses the entire historic center. The square features seven bastions and four half bastions, giving it a distinctive star shape. Access to the city is provided by three double doors and several poternas hidden within the walls. The square leads visitors to the UNESCO world heritage castle of Elvas, a nearby museum, and the cathedral located to the south.
Central and biggest square of old city of Elvas with former cathedral and cafes and restaurants around. This place was part of the old Jewish quarter centuries ago, but no signs left... Floor of the square is made of stone cubes that are in shape of 3D cubes if you look on then from certain angle. Impressive illusion.
Tomi V — Google review
Located at the heart of Elvas’s historic center, this square has served as a marketplace and public gathering space since medieval times. It remains the civic and cultural core of the city. Facing the square are the Câmara Municipal (City Hall) and the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção (Church of Our Lady of the Assumption), both prominent landmarks that frame its urban layout. The ground is paved with traditional Portuguese calçada—a black-and-white mosaic stonework known as padrão português—featuring elegant geometric patterns that enhance the historic atmosphere.
Seokjin H — Google review
We had lunch in the gorgeous enclosed city of Elvas. The Viaducts were expectational to look at and the enclosed city was fairly lively with restaurants and places of interest to visit. Military exhibition on to mark Freedom anniversary and outdoor market in the square. On my to go back to list, to explore more.

Diane Y — Google review
The best part about the park is that it leads you to the UNESCO world heritage castle of Elvas, the museum which is just by the corner and the cathedral right at the south of the praça. And at the park tou get to see many exhibition of arts, goods and items that are traditional to Elvas. Most importantly you get a lot of option to choose what to eat from the many food vendors whose shops are situated around the park. Don’t forget to take a picture by the ❤️ELVAS structure as a reminder that you visited this beautiful town.

Mau Maria Petiscaria is a superb bar/pub that offers excellent service and delicious homemade food at reasonable prices. The staff is friendly and accommodating, particularly when it comes to families with toddlers. Their beer/mustard battered pork loin is exceptional, as is their bacalao (cod fish) dish. Despite the slightly smaller portion sizes, the food remains flavorful and satisfying. Additionally, Mau Maria Petiscaria boasts a good selection of beer and provides great service throughout your dining experience.
Really good homemade food! And very reasonable price too! You can eat for less than 10 Euros. I recommend.

We enjoyed some beers at Taberna Xico Maroto, and it's surprising to see comments suggesting that they were slow. In our case, this was not the experience; if anything, they were just as fast as any other place in Elvas. The staff provided excellent service, and the beer was refreshingly cold. Moreover, they generously offered olives and lupins without charging us, a gesture we appreciated as it hadn't happened anywhere else.
We had the Tuna salad and sirloin. Both meals were huge and delicious.
Craig P — Google review
Waiting time for two simple dishes was long (30 minutes, terrace outside). The tuna salad was average, with many ingredients coming straight from a tin (a.o. pineapple, asparagus, carrots). Fries where white in color and not fully fried. The squid (rings) was average in portion and quality as well.

(Translated by Google) Pousada Santa Luzia was opened on April 19, 1942 and was the first of the Pousadas in Portugal. In the 2010s, it ceased to belong to the inn chain, being sold to a private chain. I was curious to return to his restaurant, famous for its golden cod, a recipe invented there in 1947. I was disappointed. The place is still pleasant, but I was surprised that I was almost the only customer at lunch and that the waitress (diligent and hard-working) didn't speak Portuguese. The menu is quite suggestive and has a good regional offer, the prices are very reasonable, but the spiritual cod fell short of expectations: fewer chips than expected, less creamy than tradition, but still tasty. It's a shame to see a place with so much history like this fall so far short of expectations. I didn't feel like going back, which is a shame.

One of them was older, who had been there since the Pousada was opened and hasn't stopped. The younger one still has a lot to learn, both in manners and efficiency. It can't take that long to serve everything from a Coke to bringing a napkin. It's better not to talk about the bill; the hotel receptionist has to charge. They'd be packed if they had good service.

Nestled atop a hill, the Forte de Nossa Senhora da Graça is an impressive 18th-century pentagonal fort that offers visitors breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. This historical gem not only showcases military architecture but also houses fascinating exhibits that delve into its rich past. The fort features a spacious main hall with access to a terrace, providing stunning vistas of nearby landmarks like the Forte de Santa Luzia.
This fort is an unique experience, well worthwhile. Full of history walls, buildings, underground corridors and towers with amazing views. The visit can take you even a couple of hours, very enjoyable and for a cheap price. I totally recommend taking a detour to visit this place.

A Panoramic Marvel with Room for Improvement at Forte da Graça: Perched majestically above Elvas, the Forte da Graça commands an impressive location, offering breathtaking panoramic views that sweep across the entire town and the vast valley beyond. From its ramparts, you truly grasp the strategic importance of this UNESCO World Heritage site, feeling the echoes of its formidable past. The sheer scale and intricate design of the fort are a testament to 18th-century military engineering, making it a compelling visit for anyone interested in history and grand fortifications. However, while the exterior and the overall experience of exploring the fort's defenses are undeniably captivating, one particular aspect left a notable disappointment: the Governor's House. Given its dominant height and central position within the fort, it has all the makings of being the "jewel of the castle." Sadly, it stands largely bare, with nothing left or displayed inside. This feels like a missed opportunity to truly bring the fort's history to life. One can only imagine the stories and artifacts that could fill this significant space, transforming it from an empty shell into a vivid portal to the past. Despite this shortfall, the sheer grandeur of Forte da Graça, its stunning vistas, and the opportunity to walk through such a significant piece of Portuguese history make it a highly worthwhile visit. Just manage your expectations for the Governor's House, and prepare to be awed by the fort's commanding presence and unparalleled views.

A very nice and big fortress next to Elvas. There are four predefined routes in the fortress marked by different colours, but you can also walk freely as you like. Especially a walk along the outer wall was amazing, as you can see and enjoy the whole area around.

A wonderful historical site to visit! The fortress is impressive and well preserved, with a large exhibition of historical weapons. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. We especially loved exploring the underground tunnels – a unique and unforgettable experience. The entrance fee is very inexpensive, making it an excellent value for anyone visiting Elvas.
Lilia S — Google review
Perched atop Monte da Graça (Grace Hill), this imposing fortress is one of Portugal’s most significant examples of 18th-century military architecture. Enclosed within a square layout about 150 meters per side, it features pentagonal bastions at each corner. Originally a strategic hilltop occupied by Spanish forces in 1658, the site was later reclaimed by the Portuguese. At the request of King Joseph I and the Marquis of Pombal, the fortress was redesigned and constructed between 1763 and 1792 under the direction of Conde de Lippe (Count of Lippe)—hence its original name: Forte Conde de Lippe. As a key defensive stronghold protecting Elvas and the Portuguese-Spanish border, the fort never fell to enemy hands. Remarkably, it withstood attacks during both the War of the Oranges (1801) and the Peninsular War (Napoleonic Wars, 1811), resisting assaults by Spanish and French forces alike.

The Mercado Municipal de Elvas, also known as "Casa das Barcas," is a historic market situated in the heart of Elvas. Dating back to the early 18th century, it was originally used for building and storing boats during military operations. Today, it stands as a Monument of Public Interest and offers a traditional market experience with an array of fresh local products including cheeses and sausages at reasonable prices.
The local Farmer's Market in Elvas, Portugal. Situated across from our stay in Vila Gale Collection, Elvas - went by to see the local offerings. The place was filled with fresh farm produce and an assortment of home made cheeses, olive oils and fresh meats, etc. Availed to a box of fresh plucked figs - delectable!! Worth a visit when in town.

Another good restaurant in Elvas. The restaurant has a small door, but lots of tables inside. Also it's a Sunday evening, bookinh in advanced is recommended or go there as their first set of guests. Wine to choose from their cellar. food is huge portion, and the waiter is nice.

It’s a lovely place with nice decorations and a lot of wines. The owners are very hospitable. It’s always full, better to reserve a table before going . The meat was really in high quality. We will come back for sure.
Tiffany — Google review
Second time coming to the restaurant. This time the experience wasn't so good regarding the food. We had squids "à alentejana" (which were divine), but the pork cheeks were too chewy for that specific piece of meat. The French fries and the migas were perfect. The house red wine was ok, but the desserts sure need an improvement. The cheese mousse was did not have any peaks (a lot of whites in the bottom of the glass) and the sericaia was too chewy on the outside for our taste. However, we highly recommend this place.

I’ve lived in and travelled all over Portugal for over 3 years now and can honestly report to you that Adega Regional ranks among the top as far as quality of ingredients, execution, service and fair prices. These good people know what they are doing and they do it very very well! Thanks for a wonderful evening enjoyed by a solo diner seated next to a table of 13!
Jacques M — Google review
Let's start with the good things... The kitchen isn't closed in the afternoons, the service is nice and dishes are well served for a very reasonable price. However, we had to wait one hour to get our main courses, meat was overcooked and the "appetizers" served at your arrival are billed even if you don't touch them. Do not hesitate to mention it. Overall a normal experience for a reasonable price hence the 3 stars

Golden Hour is a delightful dining spot that you simply must visit when in Elvas, located in the picturesque Alentejo region. After a long journey, we were thrilled to find this restaurant conveniently close to our hotel and without the need for a reservation on a bustling Friday night. The menu features an array of delicious vegan options, which was a pleasant surprise! We kicked off our meal with an exquisite starter of mushrooms and garlic that left us wanting more.
...yet another excellent meal in Elvas, in the northern reaches of the Alentajo region. (It's east of Evora and well worth the visit.) Although the name/logo is a bit commercial sounding/looking, the food, service, and ambiance are all top notch. First off...again with the couvert - YES, PLEASE! The bread, the herbed butter, the olives, and the cheese could have been a meal on their own because the portion was so healthy and the flavors so amazing, and at only 7.5 Euros, was a total bargain. (The cheese was a well-worth it 4 Euro add-on, otherwise it would have been 3.5 total.) Next up was my favorite veggie in Portugal - Peixhinos da Horta ("fish from the garden") - battered and deep-fried green beans. We also got the Cogumeles ao Alhinho (mushrooms with garlic), which is one of the only mushroom dishes I've ever returned to for seconds. (I don't normally like mushrooms.) Our final appetizer was the Tiborna de Coentros e Alho, which is basically the best bruschetta/garlic bread we could hope for. For main dishes we had half orders of the Bacalhau Dourado (Golden Cod) and Carne d' Alguidar. Both are Alentajo specialties, with rumor being that the Golden Cod was invented in Elvas. (It's a warm shoestring potato and cod casserole of sorts, although I like to call it a "cod salad" so I can claim I'm eating salad.) Whether it was invented here or not, it was the best Golden Cod we've ever had and the Carne d' Alguidar, what with its Alentajo seasoning, was simply divine. (It came with some sort of bread stuffing, which was also delicious and went perfectly with the beef.) And these were HALF ORDER portions, if you can believe it!!! In our opinion this is the best restaurant in Elvas, and after meeting Chef Carlos and learning of his passion for, and take on, authentic local dishes (he is from Elvas, but trained in Evora), it's no wonder why this restaurant is so good. We cannot wait to return with friends in the near future.

We stopped by Golden Hour shortly after arriving in Elvas. The restaurant was near our hotel and, being tired and hungry, we were happy that they were able to accommodate us without a reservation on a Friday night. We were even happier to discover that they had some yummy vegan options! We shared the mushrooms and garlic starter, which was perfectly delicious. For mains, we had the green beans (like tempura beans) with tomato rice and also the chickpea burgers with salad and tomato rice, again sharing both options. We also enjoyed two glasses of red sangria. For dessert, we had a delectable, tangy and sweet, lemon mousse. Everything was so fresh and delicious and prepared and served with pride and love. I highly recommend Golden Hour to anyone wanting delicious food that meets a variety of tastes. 💛

Tasquinha Alentejana in Elvas offers a satisfying dining experience with delicious food at an affordable price. The portions are generous and can easily serve two people. It's advisable to order something to share with children since there is no dedicated kids' menu. On busy weekends, it is recommended to arrive early as the restaurant can become crowded due to limited staff availability. Tasquinha Alentejana stands out for its tasty and plentiful dishes, coupled with friendly service.
Had a good experience, great food & very good price given food quality / quantity. Portions are pretty big and can feed 2 people in most cases. Since they don't have a children's menu, consider ordering something to share with kids, otherwise they will leave more than half on the plate. On weekends, especially on warm Saturday evenings it can get very busy and there's only 2-3 waiters, so I recommend going early to get your order in quickly.

Bar Carrascal Na Praca is a delightful spot to enjoy a meal, especially on busy days when the city is bustling with visitors. While the service may have its ups and downs—like waiting for drinks—it’s worth it for the generous portions of delicious food that await you. Diners rave about their golden cod, making it a must-try dish.

I guess navigating smaller cities in Europe regarding food is part of the fun. I completely understand the closures at 3 pm / 330pm. But when you tell me you will check the kitchen and completely ignore me for 15mins while walking past me 5 different times - well that’s interesting service. My parents / grandparents come from Elvas. So this is home to me. To be treated like I’m some non Spanish (yes I went there as I saw you treat Spanish people better) - well that is ignorant. By the way - Canadians (with Portuguese backgrounds because we of all people understand the struggle of our patriots ) would have tipped 20% - as we do back home. Perhaps next time - know your clientele. On my next visit to Elvas - avoiding this place based on service alone.

We had to wait 30 minutes for our restaurant nearby to open and feeling thirsty, a beer was in order! Fortunately, we found Onofre and we decided to sit inside, ordering two 33cl glasses of the standard draught beer, a size up from the Imperial. Not knowing what I had in my wallet to pay, I took all the coins out and headed to the counter with all my coins presented in my hand and asked to pay. How much? I was told 4 euros!! I never really argued it when really I normally would have done. We left the bar and I was trying to look for the price list of the drinks on the wall but never saw it. I felt rather annoyed having been taken for a tourist in all the bad sense of the word! I just felt more annoyed and robbed with a price that would have been more normal in Lisbon. We do live in Alentejo and we have never paid 2 euros for 33cl. That bar had nothing special at all, even less the decor. Speaking in English between us and showing a handful of coins was obviously license for the barman to charge me extra! Shame on him, I never thought I would have to now start thinking of such behaviour in a café in Portugal. We later stopped in another place for an afternoon beer and I asked the barman whether 4 euros was an OK price for what we had at Onofre, his reply was a grimace on his face and he told me that the barman was pushing it!

Large portions and amazingly good local cheese served with olives and bread as a free starter but the food quality was fairly average. The outside was very pleasant – something many other restaurants can't offer. Overall, it was a bit dirty. Our meal (entrecôte) was beautifully served on large clay plates. The meat was rather tough, and the fries were from a packet. Still, it was okay. We gladly skipped dessert. The coffee is from Spain. We can't say whether other restaurants nearby are better, but we certainly wouldn't come here again. The service, presumably the chef, was okay, but there was still plenty of room for improvement. Heritage building
The Amoreira Aqueduct, also known as the Aqueduto da Amoreira, is a remarkable piece of hydraulic architecture in Elvas, Portugal. Stretching over 8 kilometers from the outskirts of the city, this World Heritage Site was completed in 1622 after more than 120 years of construction. Designed by Francisco de Arruda, it features impressive cylindrical buttresses and towering arches reaching up to 30 meters in height.
The aqueduct is a monumental structure made up of 843 stone arches, stretching for approximately 8 kilometers, with a maximum height of around 31 meters and reaching four tiers in some sections. It served as both a vital water supply system and a symbolic element of urban defense for the city of Elvas. Its construction was initiated during the reign of King Manuel I in 1498, with major works commencing in 1537 under the direction of architect Francisco de Arruda. In 1622, the aqueduct began supplying water to the Fonte da Misericórdia (Fountain of Mercy). During the 17th-century Portuguese Restoration War, there was debate over dismantling the aqueduct for strategic reasons, but local citizens opposed the idea, and the structure was ultimately preserved.

And suddenly there was this huge beautiful aquaduct just outside the city of Elvas. It has a length of almost 8 km and has 843 arches. Construction started in 1529 but it was completed in 1622 after several construction stoppages.

Beautiful acueduct, although not as nice as other famous ones like that in Segovia, Spain. Still worth visiting and also the views from above (highly recommended from the fort). Some roads even cross right behind the arches.

An impressive and monumental aqueduct, a true architectural masterpiece. The massive arches are stunning and visible from many points around Elvas. It’s free to visit and perfect for a walk or for taking photos. A must-see landmark when exploring Elvas.

Very impressive and massive structure of aqueduct was build in the end of 16th century has its highest point of 30m! and on the ground level stretches 5,5 km. Its a symbol of the Elvas city. Best to visit is this aqueduct is via eastern gate. where the aqueduct in on the ground level there are obstacles, so if you thought like me to climb on the upper level of this magnificent structure, no, its not possible, also probably illegal, not saying dangerous.
Tomi V — Google review
Though it was spectacular to see. However if it falls apart I wouldn't be surprised as the render was already coming away in large quantities on the newly refinished section.

Free to visit and walk around. We had no problem parking nearby. There's a great free lot that had lots of space, located at 38.877570593473436, -7.169049580896307.
Brittany — Google review
A beautifully imposing structure in the heart of town. They are currently doing maintenance on it and re-plastering it in sections, but there isn’t any scaffolding or anything obstructing the view. There is a lot of parking right next to the aqueduct. It’s really easy to pull over and get some great pics without having to walk much. We arrived at around 3pm and there were only a few other cars in the massive parking lot. About a four minute drive from the fort as well, really easy to see both quickly.

Santuário do Senhor Jesus da Piedade, located in the Piedade Park in Elvas, Portugal, is a remarkable example of 18th-century religious architecture. The original church was built on the site of an old wooden landmark and has since become a place of pilgrimage due to its miraculous history. The sanctuary features a single nave and stunning marble altars.
(Translated by Google) Its foundation originated from a promise made by Father Manuel Antunes (18th century) which resulted in the recovery of a wooden cross that existed on the site, which came to be considered a miracle worker and thus became a place of pilgrimage. Later, this magnificent temple was built based on the numerous and rich votive offerings. The church has a single nave and the main altar as well as the two side altars are made of marble and are very beautiful. There is also a museum with the votive offerings donated over time, which can be visited.

(Translated by Google) This afternoon I went to the Sanctuary of Senhor Jesus da Piedade as I do every year. I prayed, made my requests, bought some candles and went to light them in the place that is there for that purpose. I walked around the crockery stalls for about 10 minutes and returned to the place where I had placed and lit the candles to see if any of my candles had gone out. To my surprise, my candles were no longer where I had left them. The man in charge of the place was putting candles back that had barely burned and were practically as we had bought them in bags. I was really surprised that there were almost no candles burning when I arrived, since it was the weekend of the procession. I don't understand, but I think they are making fun of our Faith. They won't take a single cent from me. Shame on you. Forte de Santa Luzia, also known as Santa Luzia Fortress, is a historic stronghold located in Elvas, Portugal. It is part of the Garrison Border Town of Elvas and its Fortifications site, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The fortress features zig-zag walls and is home to the Army Museum since 2001. The museum showcases an intriguing collection of weapons spanning from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, along with uniforms and miniatures.
Built in 1641 during the Portuguese Restoration War, the fort was designed as a key strategic stronghold for the defense of the border city of Elvas. Constructed according to the plans of Cosmander, the fort features a star-shaped layout, typical of 17th-century military architecture. It played a crucial role in the 1659 Batalha das Linhas de Elvas (Battle of the Lines of Elvas), successfully resisting Spanish forces.

This four bastions fort is just in very short walking distance from the bus station, in the south of the old city of Elvas. Entrance is 3 Eur. Its much smaller that northern fortress da Graca, and also not that symmetrically built, but in purpose. Still worth to visit this masterpiece of military architecture of mid 17th century. Very nice 360 deg. views from the fortress of the surroundings.

Catholic church
Igreja das Domínicas, located near Elvas Castle and the Church of the Third Order of St Francis, is a beautiful church with a rich history. Originally part of a convent demolished in the 19th century, this octagonal-shaped church features Renaissance frescoes, 17th-century tiles, and gilded woodwork. The interior is covered in stunning tiles and boasts remarkable artwork including scenes from the life of St Francis.
A little gem of a building, lushly decorated with beautiful azulejos. It’s tiny and the opening times are irregular but if you’re lucky and find it open, do step in. This is elegant architecture at its best. A jewel.

Pelourinho de Elvas is a stunning historical landmark that dates back to the 16th century, originally erected as a symbol of authority in the city. This beautiful Manueline-style column served as a site for executions and was unfortunately dismantled in the 19th century. However, it has been meticulously restored and now stands proudly within Elvas's historical complex. The structure combines original elements with reconstructions, creating an enchanting sight against the backdrop of the Praça da República.
beautiful white marble Manueline 16th century column - pillory. Part of it is an original, from depository of the museum, part is a reconstruction, as this column stood only on the main square, today Praca da Republica, but altogether, very nice artifact, fitting in setting of small square with part of old Islamic wall and arc, specially for photography.
Tomi V — Google review
This 16th-century pillory, carved in Manueline style from marble, symbolized judicial authority and municipal autonomy during the Portuguese monarchy. Originally erected in Praça Nova (now Praça da República), it served as a visible expression of local governance and law enforcement. The pillory was dismantled in 1872, but in 1940, architect Vitalino de Albuquerque reconstructed it based on original components preserved in a museum and historical documentation. It was reinstalled at its current location in Largo de Santa Clara.

Restaurant
I arrived in Elvas on my Solo motorbike tour of Western Europe. I was recommended this restaurant by my accommodation host & what a recommendation it turned out to be. Firstly, because I was on my motorbike I had packed very light & so was under dressed compared to all the other restaurant guests, I was in walking shorts, flip flops and Barry Sheene tee shirt but I couldn’t have had a more welcoming reception. I asked if they had a table for one and was offered inside or outside on the Sky Lounge. I chose outside overlooking the very impressive, high, old town wall & there were many swallows putting in a very impressive flight show for everyone on the Sky Lounge. I was offered more than one table, my choice. I was seated and given a menu and I ordered a Cerveza and bottle of house red while I chose my food. A waiter & a waitress returned, pronto with my requests plus olives in a bowl, bread in a small cloth sack and garlic butter in a bowl which looked like a ladies day hat at the races, upside down, already impressed. The menu was only in Portuguese but with a mobile in this modern day, reading or conversing in foreign languages is really quite simple. I was enjoying the whole atmosphere, the 30’ heat and was in no rush to order and I was given all the time I needed to translate the menu before so was asked for my order. The food was very well presented, both starter and main and can highly recommend the mixed seafood pasta, it was a taste sensation let me tell you, the restaurant got busier as the night rolled gently on but at no point did I feel under pressure to finish and leave. I finished with a coffee and a Whisky which was brought to my table. I had to send my whisky back because it was served with Ice which I hadn’t asked for but there was no drama or questioning, the waiter took at away without any attitude and returned with a new Whisky but in a brandy glass, hey ho, different cultures but it did have a stem so no heat was introduced to my Whisky from my hands. After I had finished, I asked for my bill and was very impressed buy the total, this restaurant could charge 30% more elsewhere for the service and food and it was a little disappointing I couldn’t add a tip to my bill because I was paying by card, they only accept cash tips for the staff because the Government tax tips heavily it was explained, shame. All in all, I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough, don’t look elsewhere in Elvas, go here.

(Translated by Google) A place of worship obviously for everything it represents. Mr. Manel Claudino is a reference. The atmosphere is very welcoming and familiar. On game days it's crazy. Kudissama is a hidden gem that may not boast an extravagant ambiance, but it certainly makes up for it with its exceptional culinary offerings and warm hospitality. Visitors have been pleasantly surprised by the delightful experience they receive, especially considering the incredibly reasonable prices. Whether you're stopping by after a long day or simply looking to indulge in local flavors, Kudissama promises fantastic dishes like gazpacho and cuttlefish that leave a lasting impression.
Arrived in Elvas late 8.00pm cold and hungry in early January. This was the only proper (not fast food) restaurant we could find still serving. And what a find fantastic service and wonderful local food just sublime as good as anywhere I have eaten in my life and at very reasonable prices. Cannot recommended highly enough. Come eat and enjoy!

Great place to have a meal! Wonderful food, with many options and the beautiful (home made) sericaia dessert. If you are around, stop by to try all the delicious dishes, including the bacalhau dourado!
Rui S — Google review
A very good surprise. The ambient is not so special and doesn't look like a good place but we where wrong: they are really lovely and the food was absolutely good! A big surprise to have such good treatment for a total bill of 17,50 euros (2 people!) including couvert, soup, main dish, dessert, drinks and one coffe!! I would go there again!
