Calheta in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Calheta, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Calheta is a sunny, sheltered corner of Madeira known for its golden sand beach—one of the island’s few—backed by a modern marina. The surrounding hillsides are covered in terraced vineyards and banana plantations, with levada walking trails offering sweeping ocean views. Visitors use Calheta as a relaxed base for exploring the island’s dramatic west coast, including viewpoints, waterfalls, and whale- and dolphin-watching trips. The village also features a small but notable art museum (Casa das Mudas) and a rum distillery that highlights Madeira’s sugarcane heritage.
With favorites like Miradouro Farol da Ponta do Pargo, On Tales Whales and Dolphins cruises, and Golden Calheta, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Golden Calheta and Bentornato A Rum Bar so you can get the best taste of Calheta while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Public beach
Praia da Calheta beach, nestled in the charming coastal town of Calheta de Sao Miguel in Cabo Verde, is a true gem for sun-seekers and water sports enthusiasts alike. This stunning destination boasts imported golden sands that create a family-friendly atmosphere perfect for swimming and relaxation. The beach's unique double-ended man-made sandy inlets offer an inviting space to unwind while enjoying breathtaking views of the crystal-clear waters.
All the beaches we stopped during the Madeira trip were amazing! One of them was this beach, Praia da Calheta. It is a free entry and a great stop for a picnic. The view is totally outstanding. I recommend this beach!

Been there on a Saturday. We showed up around 10:30 am. At this time we got curbside parking (80 cents per hour) and - most importantly- an umbrella and two sunbeds for 11 Euro. Around noon, all sunbeds were occupied, you only got lucky to get one if somebody leaves. You can also pit your towels on the beach - for free and always a space available. Sand is nice (imported) and sea swimming protected by lifeguard.
Al H — Google review
Very rocky water, lots of people got hurt whilst we were there. Beach shoes recommended! It's very pretty and a sun trap. It's quieter mid week then weekend/Monday. Place is very clean and well looked after and also safety is high priority with life guards all round the bay.
Michelle J — Google review
Calm beach in a developed area. There is a restaurant and a big supermarket close to it. Has paid beach chairs, umbrellas, free toilets. Water is calm and not too deep. Parking on a nearby street is paid, 0.8€/h, some more remote streets have free parking.
Anna L — Google review
A very lovely sandy beach, with only a few rocks. Paid street parking available until about noon, after that it's gets pretty full, but there is a park garage. The beach itself isn't to crowded, there are options if you want to be more comfortable, like umbrellas and chairs for rent but you can go with a blanket or towel also. P.S. We stayed at the back on the rocks which separate the beach from the ocean, but when tide arrives it can get wet easily.
Robert A — Google review
Great restaurants 👌 shops nearby, we self catered, good place to do your own thing. Marina is so so nice to be by especially sundowners time
SHARLENE S — Google review
Sheltered place to swim, and lots of lovely bars. Fabulous for sunset. if you want to snorkle, go to the eastern most beach - many fish in the shelterd cove
Gen L — Google review
Praia da Calheta is a beautiful sandy beach with crystal-clear, calm waters – perfect for a relaxing swim. I loved that there’s lifeguard supervision, which makes it feel extra safe for families. The beach club is a great bonus: affordable, laid-back, and a nice spot to enjoy a drink or snack right by the sea. Definitely one of the best places to spend a sunny day on Madeira! Parking requires driving around a bit but it’s doable!

On Tales Whales and Dolphins cruises in Calheta, Portugal offer an unforgettable experience for marine animal enthusiasts. The morning tour provides the opportunity to witness dolphins and whales, while the sunset cruise promises an outstanding experience. The knowledgeable skipper, Emanuel, enhances the journey with exceptional local knowledge. Visitors are also provided with complimentary pictures to commemorate their trip. This is a must-do activity for anyone visiting Madeira who appreciates marine life.
What a wonderful trip! Super friendly staff who also gave a lot of explanation during the trip. Explanation about the island, the coast, the ocean and the dolphins and birds etc. Much respect for the rules. After the trip we received a huge pile of photos which were taken by them and another email with information about what we saw during our tour specifically. Enjoyed it! Especially because of the fine people and the clear and fine information. Very, very highly recommended to book through On Tales! Also nice that it can only be a group of up to 12 people.
Jesse B — Google review
I had the most relaxing time on the On Tales sunset cruise! The staff was incredibly kind and welcoming, which made the whole experience feel even more special. The cruise itself was peaceful and beautiful, with stunning views as the sun went down. One of the best surprises was how many amazing pictures they took of us — such a lovely bonus to remember the evening by. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a calm, scenic escape on the water!
Tereza V — Google review
We had an unforgettable day! Yes, we successfully spotted whales, but even aside from that, the whole team made sure we were more than well taken care of. We were provided with towels and all-inclusive drinks, both non-alcoholic and beer. The crew was super friendly, shared lots of interesting information about the whales and the island, and showed great respect for the wildlife to ensure the animals weren’t disturbed. With a maximum of only 12 people on board, the experience felt very personal and relaxed. Everything was perfect!
Marion H — Google review
We booked 2 days before the trip. It was a full yacht, about 10 people but everyone had enough space. 5 of us were sitting in the front enjoying the ocean from the first row. We were not lucky to see whales but we met dolphins and our crew told us everything about the dolphins we met. We also had a stop in the middle of the ocean for a swim. I can say it was the best swim in my life, the water was clean and fresh and atmosphere overall was very friendly. Crew members were very polite and gentle. They told us a bit of history of Madeira and showed us some interesting places while we were looking for dolphins. Even though we didn’t met whales the experience we got was fantastic. Huge thanks to On Tales for this journey!
Dmitry — Google review
Lovely boat, with a limited amount of passengers on each trip meaning you have plenty of space to relax. Or captain found a pod of dolphins so we got a great view of nature's finest. With complementary drinks on board and towels provided if you fancy a dip in the ocean, this is a great option of you are looking for a boat trip
Mark R — Google review
We had an absolutely wonderful time with this sealife watching experience. From start to finish, everything was well organized and the crew made the trip both fun and memorable. They were incredibly attentive, always making sure everyone was comfortable and pointing out the different animals along the way. We were lucky to see a wide variety of sea life, and it truly felt magical being out on the water surrounded by nature. The atmosphere was relaxed yet exciting, and the passion of the crew for what they do really showed. We would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a unique and unforgettable adventure—you won’t be disappointed!
Jens G — Google review
Amazing and unforgettable experience 🩵 My cousins and I had the greatest time and we felt so welcomed & comfortable on board . Watching marine life was so special , we had the luck to see the pilot whales and Martin told us the full story about them ( thank you ) the yacht is so comfortable and big to move around also very beautiful. Thank you for making us happy 😊
Gjystina I — Google review
I stumbled upon this place by chance while out for a morning run. No regrets at all—thanks to them, we had an amazing trip. It might be around €10 more expensive than the competition, but it's absolutely worth it. The people were incredibly kind, from the reception desk all the way to the captain and crew. As I mentioned, they may be slightly pricier, but drinks on board the yacht are free, and they also offer complimentary photos, so the cost balances out—if not ends up cheaper. Fantastic spot, great intermediary, and my fiancée and I were truly satisfied.

Sociedade dos Engenhos da Calheta, located in Calheta, is a must-visit for those interested in the island's rum production. This historic distillery offers a fascinating glimpse into 19th-century engineering and production methods, serving as a living museum. Visitors can explore the old machines used to make rum and enjoy a tasting session of Madeiran rum, including the iconic Poncha drink.
A working traditional rum distillery in Madeira. Watch the sugarcane being crushed as part of the first step in getting the raw material for distillation. Then there is excellent choice of various aged rum expressions from the distillery. The 25 Yr old is the best. You can taste the fresh sugarcane juice as well plus fresh poncha
Rajesh N — Google review
Great wee museum telling you all about the rum industry in the area. It's free entry, and there is a bar and a small shop selling bottled drink. Unfortunately, the museum was unmanned during our visit so we couldn't buy anything. There are toilets next to the bar.
Berglas71 — Google review
Nice tour of a still operational sugar cane mill and refinery, nice selection of products on sale.
Rutger L — Google review
Interesting place. Free admission. Large selection of rums.
Lukasz G — Google review
Nice little museum in the rum distilery and sugar cane factory, gives an inside on how they turned sugar cane into rum and honey. It's free and at the end of the museum you can try their various sorts of rum. Recommended!
Karla V — Google review
Interesting to see how the Pocha is made. We even had a chance to talk to a nice lady who quickly told us about the process and when and how the machines are used. Afterwards we tried the Poncha, the Rumel and the Bolo do Mél. All was tasteful. We even got some insights about the Bolo. So round and round a nice experience.
Juliane S — Google review
Very nice selection of madeiran rum ro taste. Prices are fair and vary from 1€ up to 4€ for very large shots to taste. The younger lady was very friendly and took her time to explain the differences in taste, use, and general history behind the rum, Poncha, etc. There is a small "museum" where you can look at the old machines used to make rum, which was also very interesting. All in all, it was definitely worth the visit. Entry is free, and the cost to taste the rum was very fair! If you like rum, or if you want to buy some rum as a souvenir, this is definitely the place for a small visit.

Fabulous experience at the distillery. The cake is too die for. Rum is impressive as well. Strongly recommend

MUDAS - Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Madeira is a hidden gem showcasing Portuguese contemporary art in a modern building with stunning sea views. The museum's architecture, nominated for the van der Rohe Award for European Architecture, is a sight to behold. Visitors are drawn to the unforgettable views of the surrounding area and the ocean from the rooftop terrace. While some may find the displayed artworks unusual, they can be a great source of inspiration.
Beautiful location with multiple buildings to visit. Talks about communist influence to the locals. It also has a beautiful open concept with stunning view looking from inside.
P T — Google review
Disappointing. Majority of the museum was closed due to a new exhibition being prepared. Restaurant was also closed - a coffee would have been nice! As a consequence parking and admission was free. There was one display of a multi-screen film of Madeira in previous years that was quite interesting ... however, the only other exhibition was an utterly pretentious series of works on something to do with film and video. Sorry - stacking old video tapes on the floor to form the word 'VHS' just doesn't cut it. Thank goodness I didn't have to pay to see this 'art'! Pluses - staff friendly, views terrific, interesting architecture. But I suggest checking what's on and that it's fully open before you make a special trip!
Paul G — Google review
The museum is very inconspicuous from the road and we visited it unplanned. Upon entering the grounds, however, you are drawn to the building itself, which is stunning and offers unforgettable views of the surrounding area and the ocean. It cost a few euros to enter and I think it's well worth it. The works on display are sometimes strange but it can certainly be a good source of inspiration. I can recommend a visit. Be warned, no card payments were possible during our visit.
Matej S — Google review
Great discovery and the building is magnificent, also the location and views from the terraces might be one of the most convenient on this coastline (free and no drumming).
JHS B — Google review
Even if you don’t go to the museum you can enter in the facility and see the amazing view! Perfect spot to sunset and romantic. Recommend to grab some food and have a picnic during the sunset on the grass.
João P — Google review
Wonderful little excursion to the World of Arts and Madeirian history. And a more than breathtaking architecture 🌟🌅
Bernhard E — Google review
The building and the surroundings promise much more than very scarce and modest contents. Good views from museum terrace although I was told quite rudely by one of the museum attendants not to approach the window with a view out to the ocean - « not possible ». Museum itself is unimpressive, not worthy a special visit.
Lala L — Google review
This is a beautiful and unusual building at the top of the hill if you’re looking for something other than the beach. Spacious and atmospheric it contains some interesting art and currently has an excellent exhibition about the carnation revolution in Portugal. Only 4 euros. Definitely recommend.

Lighthouses
Ponta do Pargo is home to a picturesque lighthouse situated in the far west of Madeira. The lighthouse, resembling the bow of a cruise ship, offers breathtaking views of the vast ocean and both the north and south coasts of Madeira. Visitors can explore a small museum on-site featuring photographs and documents related to Madeira's lighthouses. While the lighthouse itself may not be accessible, its surroundings provide spectacular photo opportunities and panoramic vistas, especially during sunset.
Great place for sunset. Sometimes the sun goes behind the clouds, but it doesn't spoil the location, but adds some charm. Take a jacket and a blanket to sit on. From Funchal 1 hour driving. Parking place is not so big, so come in advance to park closer
Krystyna I — Google review
Beautiful view, tasty and fresh air. The picture especially more impressive when the sun goes down and sky is clear 🤗 And sometimes you can see that on the right side waves and wind are strong, but on the left are calm
Nikolai B — Google review
The lighthouse looks good together with the landscape. Considering the place is quite remote there's plenty of space to park the car. There's a sign informing about exhibition, but all doors are closed, so I guess it's not up to date info.
John D — Google review
Absolutely beautiful view point on the west coast of Madeira. The view is astonishing. We walked for about 15 minutes to the lighthouse to enjoy the nature and view on I suppose newly built villas. Than the walk from the tunnel straight to the lighthouse lets you cool off a bit. At the lighthouse you can really enjoy the nature, view and the silence.
Marko P — Google review
A stunning lighthouse with a breathtaking view over the cliffs and the endless ocean. It can get quite windy, but the scenery makes it absolutely worth the visit. A perfect spot for photos, ocean lovers, and peaceful reflection.
Migmar L — Google review
Wow view! It was amazing. It's like you're flying. You could see the whole ocean from there. It was quiet the best place for meditate and concentrate.
Farzaneh A — Google review
Nice view. Is a parking, but during "the season" best to not even try parking at the parking spot by the light house. At the moment some works are being done under the lighthouse, but you can walk freely.

Golden Calheta is a delightful dining destination that promises an unforgettable culinary experience. This charming restaurant, though relatively new, has quickly made a name for itself with its exquisite food presentation and exceptional service. Guests rave about the friendly staff who communicate effortlessly in English, ensuring a pleasant visit.
Really yummy food at decent price, especially the salmon and shrimps salads … and the French fries are really home-made… like the incredible tiramisu. Don’t hesitate, you won’t be disappointed.
Matthieu L — Google review
Fresh and delicious dinner marinaside on our first evening in town after a long travel day. Don’t miss the local catches of tuna with onion sauce and black scabbard fish.
Jonathan A — Google review
I ordered the sirloin steak in green pepper sauce and was very disappointed. The steak was completely smothered in sauce, which seemed more like an attempt to cover up a poor cut of meat — it was mostly fat and gristle, and the small amount of actual meat was neither soft nor tender. The sauce was overpowering and masked any natural flavor of the steak. The side salad was just shredded lettuce with a bit of pesto tossed on top — uninspired, especially for one of the more expensive restaurants on the marina. Overall, a very underwhelming meal.
Lucy Q — Google review
Charming food spot located right by the port, perfect for a relaxed meal with a view. The risotto was excellent, both the vegetarian and seafood options full of flavor and cooked just right. There is also a nice selection of starters to begin with. A lovely place to enjoy good food in a beautiful setting.
Jens G — Google review
Amazing experience at this restaurant! The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The service was exceptional, and the staff’s English was excellent, making everything easy and enjoyable. Though the restaurant is fairly new, it competes strongly with the well-established spots by the marina—if not surpassing them in some areas. A little suggestion for next time: it would be great if you had some local bread on hand, and oysters would make a fantastic addition to the menu as well! I’m sure we’ll be back!
Betkoks V — Google review
An overall okay restaurant, the food was good, the staff was nice, still lacked on the overall experience, maybe because we visited in mid October at lunch. Can recommend the Scabbardfish risotto it was really rich and creamy.
Robert A — Google review
We were in this place twice during our stay and were satisfied. We had a very good breakfast, croissant and toast delicious, coffee also very good. The second time we went for lunch and chose a veggie burger. Portion large, only the tofu could have been done better, but overall on the plus side. Service very friendly, I definitely recommend this place.

If you're looking for a delightful culinary experience in Calheta, look no further than Bentornato A Rum Bar. This charming establishment has quickly become a beloved destination on the island, thanks to the warm hospitality of its owners, Davide and Adriana. Their welcoming nature makes every visit feel special. The food is nothing short of exquisite, with each dish crafted to perfection and complemented by some of the best cocktails you’ll find in Madeira.
Lovely atmosphere! Bar owners were very friendly. We will definitely return again to taste homemade tiramisu :)

A really nice café with the most friendly staff. We really enjoyed our visits there (they make a Dark 'n' Stormy that rocks). The cafe only has one fault-they close way to early...

We visited this place and were very impressed. It’s a cozy, beautifully designed space with a true Madeira atmosphere. Everything feels authentic and thoughtfully created — you can tell the people behind it put something special into it. The service was attentive and friendly, with a warm, homey feel. The coffee was great, and the whipped cream was especially delightful — light and fresh. The dessert was excellent as well.

Such a cozy and artsy spot! We had coffee, some drinks, and tried their breakfast and light snacks — everything was delicious, especially the homemade cakes. We also tried their homemade poncha, freshly made that moment, a local Madeira drink, which was excellent. The service was excellent, with super friendly and welcoming people who really add to the atmosphere. Loved the chilled music, and we even got lucky to enjoy a live saxophone performance. A perfect place to relax and spend time.

I came to O Farol for the sunset and was pleased with the overall quality of the food. The dessert stood out as incredibly delicious, with rich layers that were not overly sweet. The portion sizes were generous and reasonably priced. The steak was tender, juicy, and perfectly grilled. As someone from Taiwan who has been in Madeira for 17 days, this restaurant is my favorite and I highly recommend it for its food, scenery, and service.
Fablous views. Very friendly and helpful bar tender. I picked this place for lunch but unfortunately they were only offering dinner later that evening. Opted for a coffee on the veranda. All good cant comment on food but good coffee and friendly service.
Olive G — Google review
We had a meal in the restaurant and while the food was delicious, the place is just sleazy, worn out and dirty. The tables and chairs made of plastic that probably used to be white some 10 years ago, now they look disgusting, placed in front of the entrance, with an "excellent" view of the parking lot 😬 A place of wasted possibilities.
Agnieszka B — Google review
The view from the rooms was amazing, but when we arrived we were told the restaurant was closed down, eventho nowhere stated. The rooms where okay, kind of dirty and not like the pictures. Roomservice was only good after getting tipped. Breakfast was okay, not alot of choices but its manageable if you're not staying for too long. I wouldn't really recommend if you're staying for more that a day or so.
Robbie P — Google review
We came here for the sunset. The food is good in general. The dessert is incredibly delicious because the layers are very rich, most importantly not too sweet. Food portions are large and reasonably priced. The steak is tender, juicy, and grilled perfectly. I am from Taiwan, and I've been Madeira for 17 days. This is the restaurant that I love the most and highly recommend because of the food, the scenery, and the service.
Åtinạ V — Google review
Ate a delicious picanha steak; very generous portion. For dessert they had a caramel cake that was also very good. The food was outstanding and we enjoyed the sunset view at the same time. Staff were also attentive and friendly. Perfect place!
Nicholas C — Google review
Horrible food!!! Chicken salad - moldy tomato and pineapple. Estapada - almost raw meat, cold and full of tendons. Tomato soup - apparently a heated semi-finished product. Prices quite high. The quality does not match the price. The service is nice, they speak English, the place is great.
Lucie P — Google review
This restaurant was a spur of the moment decision while on day trip exploring Madeira with my wife. The food was very good and the portions plentiful. My steak literally covered my plate. The service was friendly and fast. The check was a little over 40 euros with appetizers drinks. Definitely worth a try.
Ross P — Google review
Definitely do NOT recommend. We arrived at 7:30 for dinner and to watch the sunset and the staff were very rude stating that they wanted to close early due to not being very busy, although there were many people outside and more coming in the door. We ordered the garlic bread and my friend ordered the tomato soup. The garlic bread was very bland and nothing like the other restaurants we have tried on the island. The tomato's soup tasted like it had come from the cheapest can possible, straight water and a little tomato flavor. Everything was so poor, we decided to pay our check and go to a different restaurant. The worst place we have been on the island this far (12 days).
