The bad is moderately large in area with a dedicated swimming pool along with puddle pools for children and toddlers. Two slides are there to add to the fun plus an outdoor bathing area. The major downside is in terms of time-keeping; they charge you an additional full amount even if you are 5-10 mins above the booked time. In many other swimming pools, the additional time is charged in terms of small intervals, which makes more sense.
Great pool, all year round, hot or cold. Lots of activités for everyone, of all ages, fun slides, interesting pools with waves 🌊 every now and then. Hope you enjoy 😉!

Good it is mostly open all days. Public holidays and weekends. Though timing differs. It is very clean and well maintained all throughout year. It has food, spa and sauna options too. In the big pool you can dive from 3 different heights. One pool has occasionally waves. 2 jacuzzi options also. More like a water park but still can be used daily for your swimming practice. It is located close to tram stop.
Fun! Fun! Fun! Anyday. It can be crowded in the after work hours though..I'd recommend a morning or early afternoon visit.

The artistic environment is very nice in the day. Unfortunately the day I went clubbing really sucked because the dj wasn’t playing anything nice and the floor was so empty they stopped and said it’s over at 2:20 am. Also the way to the entrance is a bit complicated and this isn’t specified on the flyers! If you follow google maps, you won’t be allowed in using that way as you have to take another long way up to get to the entrance.
Probably the best party location of Jena. The only one which you might even know outside of the region. It's an old industrial building and an alternative club. The door team is fair, I never had troubles to enter. Reasonable prices for the drinks, music various depending on the occasion. Often sold out, so come sooner than later.
I attended a concert. I liked the atmosphere, and the dance floor. The drinks are not too expensive.
The club was kind of hidden but if you literally walk through Jena west Gleis 1 you would reach it. Only the fence would separate you.

The entry fee is very low and for that you can enjoy all day long. Even though the area is usually not overcrowded, so even games like frisbee can be played easily.
A nice place for a day long gateaway. Has place to sit and eat as well. But the water can be cleaner.
Go there just for the sun. Water is so dirty in that wee little pond, that you might catch a skin cancel just by looking at it.
But with a book and a sunny day, you might enjoy your time there.

Northeast side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with JenTower, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Stadtkirche Sankt Michael. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

JenTower, a 144.5-meter-high office tower in Jena, was built in the early 1970s as a research facility for VEB Carl Zeiss Jena. Designed by Hermann Henselmann, it stands as a modern landmark with its characteristic glass facade and an observation deck offering stunning city views at 128 meters high. The cylindrical tower's design alludes to an upright telescope, symbolizing Jena's optical industries.
Visiting the top of the JenTower is definitely worth it! We purchased a 20 euro coupon that paid for a cappuccino and cake at the restaurant located on the top. It was very tasty. The views were amazing and not too busy.

A great place to take a look at Jena from above. Take the elevator to the 26the floor and change there for another one taking you to the 29th floor where you will find the observation platform and a very good restaurant.
Great view from the tower, worth taking time day and night! Plus, this is possibly the only spot in Jena where you don't see the tower... worth appreciation indeed 😃 Be ready for wind, it's much stronger than at the foot of the tower. Take an extra jacket.

An elevator takes you to floor 27 and from there another elevator takes you to floor 29.

Jena Tower costs €6 and is a must for anyone visiting Jena.
Elevators take you up to the 27th floor in a matter of seconds and then the observation deck is on the 28th floor (another lift). The views from the top of the tower are simply spectacular with observation points around the whole tower. Remember a coat and hat! It is quite windy up there.
Would be useful to have metal plaques at the top to point out landmarks, as the paper version just flew around all over the place!
Tallest skyscraper in Eastern Germany (I assume outside of Berlin). Went to the viewing platform on the 28th floor which gives views of the entire city and valley. Great to have it, especially in summer with everything so green. 6 eur to visit. No dogs. No wait.
Built in 1970, JenTower is in the list of the tallest buildings in Germany. It is always in sight when you roam around Jena.
You can take an elevator and go up for 6€. The view is amazing, seeing all sides of the city. Additionally, you have chance to have a breakfast or meal there at the Tower. Personally, prices are moderate.

For convenient parking, visitors can utilize the Neue Mitte parking garage and take the elevators up to the restaurant.
I had lunch in this top floor restaurant of the Jena tower a Monday early August of 2024 on the recommendation by my wine merchant in town. I had an Asian inspired halibut that is one of the very best versions of this delicate fish that I have ever tasted including in Iceland. The restaurant features a very good wine list and the Spätburgunder by the glass I drank was of excellent quality. Overall a great lunch with top value for money incuding the view over the city.

Seems to be a well prepared place but we were surprised to hear from the waiter that we had to order a certain number of portions at minimum. Certainly, this pressure was unexpected. The waiter kindly accepted us ordering less than he required, but it did take a little discussion and "only as an exception". Anyway, the desserts were great quality and apart from this strange pressure to generate turnover, we had a good experience. The place was almost empty, comfortably quiet, and we enjoyed the view.
We visited Scala Jena to celebrate our anniversary and chose the vegetarian five-course menu — and from the very first bite, it was an experience to remember.
The second course was an absolute standout: the Banyuls Karotten Sashimi was simply fantastic, and the Basilikum Artischocke mit Trüffel was a true delight — I still can’t forget those flavors. Even the butter with the fresh bread brought back memories of my grandmother’s cooking. That moment felt both nostalgic and refined — truly amazing.
There was a small mix-up during the third course, which briefly affected the mood. But the way the team handled it made all the difference. The chef personally came to apologize, and the staff were sincere, attentive, and kind throughout.
What began with a little hiccup turned into a truly lovely anniversary dinner — thanks to the thoughtful hospitality and exceptional flavors. A night we’ll remember, with warmth and laughter.
If you go up the JenTower, I suggest you have a little treat at Scala Restaurant to wrap up the experience before going down.
I didn’t try any food and the cake I ordered was from Kaffeehaus Grafe. Anyway, the service was excellent and I like the stairway to the toilet, so extra.
I haven't seen a waitress/hostess (the blonde one) that arrogant, imprudent and cocky in a looooong time. There was literally noone else besides me, yet she looked super annoyed that she had to "deal with me". So sad that the lovely view and this restaurant's reputation was completely ruined by a random service member.

They offer a choice of tasting menu- vegetarian or non vegetarian.
They focus on quality of ingredients as well as maximizing their vitamins and health benefits.
Our waiter was very professional and patient, the menu was in German (no English option) but it’s quite easy since u have only 2 menu options.

Very nice restaurant with an amazing 360 degrees view of Jena, which you cannot find anywhere else. Breakfast was also nice. My only negative feedback is that one staff (a red haired lady) was not kind at all with a negative attitude. I think she has to be much more careful towards the customers. Other than this, everything was top.
I stayed at this hotel during my business visit around Christmas time. Visited Christmas market nearby. The view from the hotel room was amazing. Room is quite modern with all the latest gadgets and electrical control of ambience light and blinds. Staff was friendly at reception and at the terrace bar. This is probably the Best hotel in Jena.

Historical landmark
The Johannistor, a historic gate tower first documented in the 14th century, stands as a remarkable testament to Jena's rich past. Rising 22 meters high, its gallery provides breathtaking views of the old city wall and the vibrant center of Jena. This iconic structure is not only one of the city's oldest buildings but also part of an intriguing local myth; students often avoid passing through it for fear that they might fail their exams.
One of the medieval gateway's of Jena, interesting historical landmark. Together with the wall and tower it gives a good impression of the historic defense works.

One of the nicest old structures of Jena. The Johannistor (city gate) was a part of the old city wall and is the last part of it with the wall area to the Pulverturm (gun powder tower).
Myth state that you shouldn't walk through the gate because you won't pass your examen if you do so.
Therefore, most students of the city walk around it.
There are days where you can go on the roof top of the Johannistor.

The food is amazing! The fish tastes really fresh and yummy! The taste is altered to the German tounge, but there's still hint of Japanese taste into it. For a restaurant it's not that expensive but also not that cheap, typical restaurant price. The atmosphere is good to chat with friends and or lovers but it's missing the Japanese vibe. Overall very good!
I ordered from this place for lunch, but was very disappointed. Every sushi piece is too big and seems designed to be eaten in two bites. The tuna cut on the nagiri was square shaped and slightly chewy. The inside-out roll was filled with cream cheese which completely overwhelmed the entire taste! And they put chocolate cream on the green tea mochi which again completely overwhelmed the actual dish.
I'll give a star for the packaging though, it was presented very well in a neat sealed box. Delivery time was 75 minutes to the city center.
A small warm sushiplace.The customer sevice was ok. But we ordered a mix choice menu and they brought us all those that have meat in only 2 out of many rolls ...secondly the meal was not tasty. It was too plain and felt not so fresh.

Sushi was terrible. Rise seems to be just boiled, I don't think they use rice vinegar as they should. I just got the feeling that it was prepared few hours before my order. Not much variations with raw fish.
I find it to be the best sushi place in Jena, the staff is friendly and the food is delicious.

This place houses so many species (plants and animals), it's astonishing. There are giant butterflies here that land on you to say hi. But beware, piranha's are present

Nice botanical garden with a big green house section with lots of exotic plants, little frogs, a butterfly section (not so many when we visited) and quite a large outdoor area. It makes for a nice walk.

Stadtkirche Sankt Michael stands as a magnificent testament to Jena's rich ecclesiastical history, having been a focal point of spiritual life for over seven centuries. Constructed in stages beginning in the 1380s, this stunning church was originally associated with a Cistercian monastery from the High Middle Ages. The choir was completed by the end of the 14th century, while work on the nave commenced in 1474 and wrapped up in 1557.

I had lunch in this top floor restaurant of the Jena tower a Monday early August of 2024 on the recommendation by my wine merchant in town. I had an Asian inspired halibut that is one of the very best versions of this delicate fish that I have ever tasted including in Iceland. The restaurant features a very good wine list and the Spätburgunder by the glass I drank was of excellent quality. Overall a great lunch with top value for money incuding the view over the city.

Seems to be a well prepared place but we were surprised to hear from the waiter that we had to order a certain number of portions at minimum. Certainly, this pressure was unexpected. The waiter kindly accepted us ordering less than he required, but it did take a little discussion and "only as an exception". Anyway, the desserts were great quality and apart from this strange pressure to generate turnover, we had a good experience. The place was almost empty, comfortably quiet, and we enjoyed the view.
We visited Scala Jena to celebrate our anniversary and chose the vegetarian five-course menu — and from the very first bite, it was an experience to remember.
The second course was an absolute standout: the Banyuls Karotten Sashimi was simply fantastic, and the Basilikum Artischocke mit Trüffel was a true delight — I still can’t forget those flavors. Even the butter with the fresh bread brought back memories of my grandmother’s cooking. That moment felt both nostalgic and refined — truly amazing.
There was a small mix-up during the third course, which briefly affected the mood. But the way the team handled it made all the difference. The chef personally came to apologize, and the staff were sincere, attentive, and kind throughout.
What began with a little hiccup turned into a truly lovely anniversary dinner — thanks to the thoughtful hospitality and exceptional flavors. A night we’ll remember, with warmth and laughter.
I haven't seen a waitress/hostess (the blonde one) that arrogant, imprudent and cocky in a looooong time. There was literally noone else besides me, yet she looked super annoyed that she had to "deal with me". So sad that the lovely view and this restaurant's reputation was completely ruined by a random service member.

They offer a choice of tasting menu- vegetarian or non vegetarian.
They focus on quality of ingredients as well as maximizing their vitamins and health benefits.
Our waiter was very professional and patient, the menu was in German (no English option) but it’s quite easy since u have only 2 menu options.
He explained all the dishes to us.
The wait between each course was a bit long, so the dinner took quite a awhile - but it’s definitely worth it!

Very nice restaurant with an amazing 360 degrees view of Jena, which you cannot find anywhere else. Breakfast was also nice. My only negative feedback is that one staff (a red haired lady) was not kind at all with a negative attitude. I think she has to be much more careful towards the customers. Other than this, everything was top.
I stayed at this hotel during my business visit around Christmas time. Visited Christmas market nearby. The view from the hotel room was amazing. Room is quite modern with all the latest gadgets and electrical control of ambience light and blinds. Staff was friendly at reception and at the terrace bar. This is probably the Best hotel in Jena.

I generally avoid consuming red meat, but the Steakhouse am Johannistor - Daniel Alexandrov has such high quality and delicious bread and sauces that it's hard to resist their steak. Despite being pricey, I truly enjoy dining there due to its excellent location and skilled chef. The chimichuri sauce is a personal favorite, along with an appetizer consisting of unique soft bread and mayonnaise whose name escapes me. The food is served exceptionally well, with an unbelievably tasty flavor.
Very delicious food! We ordered matured Ribeye and a starter for 2. That was too much food for 2 small women 🤣 but we finished everything, because it was absolutely amazing! The interior and service are also top notch.

Visited friend here and decide to have a steak! The restaurant is located in an old tower building which is kind unique. Walking in, the place is spacious and crowded. Steak salad/ ribs/steak with cream potatoes are what we order. The ribs is not typical US style, but with giant bones. However, the meat is so tender and easy to rip off. The wine selection can be improved. Overall, it is a good dining experience and love the quality of the meals.

This is a okay Vietnamese restaurant. The prices are a bit too much for the quality and quantity of the food. The food is really distinct though from other Asian restaurants.
Update : the restaurant has improved a lot. Like really a lot. The dishes are now really yummy and the curries are really rich and not watered down. The prices are a bit expensive but competitive enough. The service has improved.

Food servings are large. Good for two people. Flavors are good enough. The Pad Thai is tasty. Seating inside and outside.
Really long waiting time, and we have been here a few times, every time we wait for 45-60 mins or even more. What doesn't make sense is, like today we make our reservation at the time of this restaurant opens, and after all the other customers who came later than us got their dishes and ate for a while, we still don't get ours.

I am Japanese who living in Germany. Most of Ramen Restaurants in Germany are serving not qualified Ramen and food to customers by using “Japanese brand”
But this Restaurant is different. Tasty food, nice atmosphere, appropriate price setting(Most of Japanese restaurant for example in Düsseldorf are quite pricy) and friendly service.
I highly recommend this place and would like to come back here with clients, colleagues, and family :)

Interesting location. Really good food with great prices. Concentrated on ramen. The place is very small but cozy. Unfortunately there is no real waitress service, you need to go and order by yourself then find a free place, they bring your food and then you have to go by your own to pay. But it’s nice. Not for hanging out, just to eat and go.

Exactly the same taste as the one I had in Japan some years ago. The soup is very rich and tasty. Noodle can be cooked slightly longer ( I like the noodle to be softer.) I will conclude that the taste and the portion are better than the branch in Erfurt. Will definitely come back again.

Many reviewers say that once you step in, you feel like you‘re transported to Japan. I wouldn‘t be able to tell, but I can confirm, that the atmosphere is amazing.
The staff is friendly (even very friendly), the service is great, and the food.. oh the food.. excellent! The only thing I crave on a daily basis. Every time I visit Jena, I make sure to eat here.
The soup is rich in taste, and the noodles really soft and chewy. The vegetables are very fresh and the best part is probably the crunchy broccoli. They also have enough vegan and kid-friendly options! 🌱
Great customer service. They were able to make exception for a reservation for us as we came all the way from Hamburg and a lovely rose that greeted us. Very friendly staff. The Spicy miso ramen was superb and delicious. In addition, the karaage was tasty and well marinated. Will come back again when we drop/pass by Thüringen. One recommendation though, they could already place the usual condiments for each table like the usual ramen bars, so we dont have to request them all the time and less work for them. Thumbs up for having Kirin beer.

Nestled on the slopes of the Hausberg mountain, Fuchsturm Jena is a charming historical site that dates back to 1861. I was there to attend a birthday party invitation. We went there with a car as it is in the outskirt of Jena. It is also possible to hike there. Just takes a while. We had lunch and I ordered Ochsenbacke. The service was fast and the meal was tasty, atleast for me. Not all of us were happy with our meal though. The amount of salt in the sauce and onions in the Rinderroulade were not balanced. If you want to enjoy a small family gathering with a good view, this is a very good restaurant to do so. Right beside of the restaurant you have viewing tower where you can have an amazing view of Jena. I had a good time there.

Pretty cute way to discover the Jenzig nowadays. It has always had a great view but now the steep walk up is not as boring for children. The er app is also great, my daughter especially enjoyed the underwater view and looking into the past at the very top.
I advise downloading the app beforehand as it is rather large and can take a while.
Nicely designed trail, with fun and educational facts about dinosaurs along the way. The view on top is great. There’s also a free tower viewer.
Boring and unsafe! Its meant to keep kids engaged to get up the Jenzig, but needs many more dinos to do that! We saw one in addition to the one in parking lot before my 3 yo gave up. The 6yo made it almost to top where it got very unsafe with only a railing that would not stop a falling child. For a path that tries to get kids to the top this is not acceptable safety measure!

It was a lovely experience but given the high price, you would expect that other people would practice a certain etiquette that’s expected. Five people during the 45-minute show were talking loudly and the person behind us was snoring. I think the staff should make sure that these (very basic) guidelines should be followed and respected.
It was a great presentation on Aurora, and some space explanations, I appreciate it being in the beautiful upscale city of Jena.
Watched a special short-movie screening about microbes around us. Loved the dome effect and surround sound as well. A cool science place to go for fun learning.
The show itself was very good. If they'd remove the spider webs in front of the digital projectors, the images would be more crisp. The lady conducting the show is an unfriendly dragon. She invites you to ask questions at the beginning of the show which she will "gladly" answer, but in reality she is annoyed and grumpy. Asked about the difference between their planetarium and the peanut-shaped ones she just disses you because you don't know the difference between small and big domes. Asked whether their planetarium can display shifts in constellations over the millennia, rather than explaining that cosmic timescales are much larger, she just says nothing happens in 10.000 years and it's no problem for their device. Not helpful if you are interested in the technology and otherwise have no idea of cosmology. In summary, great show but bad service.
The Planetarium is essentially a huge dome-shaped cinema, but an amazing one at that.
The oldest planetarium in the world, its dome reaches 14m providing a spectacular opportunity to see the world from every angle. Programmes are split into different categories - educational, family and music, which enables a wider variety of visitors to experience the planetarium cinema.
There is a small exhibition around the outside of the cinema and a very small shop selling lots of space-themed merchandise as well as coffee whilst you wait.
There is a restaurant on site, however the planetarium could do with a wider exhibition space to enable people to learn more about the technology used and the history of the planetarium.
The show was very interesting. (In German only)
During the Covid times they really care about your safety. You need to book tickets in advance, and a few seats are left empty between the groups of visitors. The selection of the buffet could be improved.
I went to see “Space Tour” and it felt like staring at Windows’ screensavers for an hour. There were very few and poor explanations written (they don’t even bother to have someone talking), some of the images didn’t even have anything to do with space (like fireworks or random explosions). There was no storyline and very little science. Very disappointing considering it’s the oldest planetarium in the world.

However, there can be waiting times so making a prior reservation is a good idea.

Burgruine Lobdeburg is a small ruined castle with a big tower located between Lobeda and Drackendorf. It's a fairly easy hike to reach the ruins, taking about half an hour to get to the top with some steeper parts towards the end. Although there isn't much left of the castle itself, visitors are rewarded with stunning views of Jena and its surroundings.

Eine sehr schöne Burg Ruine. Es gibt viele Aussichtspunkte von dort oben . Die Stadt Jena liegt einem zu Füßen 😉. Cool. Um die Ruine herum sind sehr viele Wanderwege . Hinweisschilder wo es lang geht auf den Wegen sind natürlich auch vorhanden. Und es sind auch genügend Bänke vorhanden. Und nicht zu vergessen, das es auch eine Gaststätte dort gibt , die sich unterhalb der Ruine sich befindet. Parkplätze sind ebenfalls vorhanden. Der Ausflug nach Jena hat sich gelohnt. LG 😂

Amazing food and view. Loved it. Recommend that if you venture up there after dark, bring a flash light for the walk from the parking lot to the restaurant and back. Kinda dark.

Excellent service, friendly staff, great food and gorgeous view. Plus the toilets were super clean and everything. Cannot ask for more on a restaurant visit. Highly recommended.

Very good view and food was nice. However the little 5 min hike to the restaurant is very steep so better drive up to the parking if needed or have problems walking.

Restaurant can be reached by climbing the mountain which makes for a better experience once you reach the place. The food is good and the place is cozy. Some of the decoration can be a little off putting but otherwise its a nice place.
It's a nice stop to make. It doesn't take a long time to see it all. If u visit this place do not forget to check out the viewpoint on the leftside of the path that leads to the ruin. You have a beautiful oversight on the city there! U can also go for a fresh drink once u get down again from the ruin ☺️
Good place for small trek, very good experience to walk from Lobdeburg to Jenartel. Summer is best time to walk around. View point is good to click pictures and a nice restaurant near by.
Pretty cool remains of an old castle. It's recently been repaired and you can totally imagine what the place looked like once. A few parts like the lower castle is completely missing though.
Unfortunately, there is a scaffold Blocking the sight on the Castle. Nevertheless the ardous climb up the Castle is rewarded with a marvellous view on Lobeda.

- non respect of allergy instructions (lucky we opened burger before !)
- frozen steak, raw everything, cold, easy to understand how the delivery could be 30min early … nothing was cooked !
I would be ASHAMED of even proposing such quality, because even badly cooked burger are better, this is just a pile of ingredients mixed …
Only thing that could be eaten were the fries… unfortunately you had exactly 27 of them ….
14€ for that is simply stealing money and trying to make people sick ! Just close your doors and change work if it’s to do such shit
The people working here are friendly in nature. Food is average at best. Almost seems to overpromise yet underdeliver. Hopefully things improve in the future.
