Mysterious Sites
The Alignements of Carnac, also known as Garnag in Breton, is a significant prehistoric site with over 3000 megaliths and tombs dating back to around 4000 BC. This area predates Stonehenge by about 100 years and boasts the world's largest concentration of megalithic sites. The upright stones were erected between 5000 and 3500 BC and are spread out across 40 hectares in an orderly fashion.
Visiting the alignments is an unforgettable experience and an absolute must if you're in the region! It's a magical place that both kids and adults will find fascinating, perfect for a family adventure. The megaliths stretch across a vast and stunning landscape, and to make the most of your visit, I highly recommend starting at "La Maison des Mégalithes". This visitor center is full of engaging information and offers free maps, self-guided materials, and even guided tours, if you want to dive deeper into the history and mystery of this incredible place. Whether you choose to explore on your own or join a tour, you're in for something truly special. ⚠️Just keep in mind that this is a fragile monument, and it needs all of us to help preserve it. So please, follow the rules set by the caretakers, respect the site, and let's make sure this wonder stays intact for generations to come.

Visiting in May by foot from Carnac, there was no charge to walk around the outside of the site (there was no option to get inside the fence). The stones are tremendous, I have visited a great deal of sites from this period in the UK and could not believe the sheer scale of it. And this is just one of many "alignments" in Carnac. Well worth a visit and Carnac, the beach, and whole area are beautiful as well.
James W — Google review
We had a 1-hour tour with “le petit train” as it was raining and before the tour we visited the museum (free entrance) and watched an interesting movie. We were astonished by the number of megalithes and their alignment and happy that the train went in all the major sites around Carnac. The train did not stop and we were not allowed to get down of the train, but in any case all the sites were protected by fences and you could see the megalithes from outside - good decision in order to protect them from people writing their names everywhere. We saw the “Alignements” de Kerlescan, Manio, Kermario et Menec and the place where is (inside, close for visits these days) the Tumulus of St Michel. We were impressed and wonder what is the mystery behind these megalithes.

Fields full of menhirs.. Nobody understands what the meaning is till today. Take an 8 km walk or tour train/bus. Reasonable large main parking place and several small ones in the area. Visitor center also with guided walk tour and toilets available. Really cool to see.
Peter M — Google review
The Carnac stones are like nothing I’ve ever seen — thousands of ancient rocks lined up perfectly across the landscape. You can’t walk among them, but the viewing paths give you plenty of great angles to take it all in. It’s one of those places that leaves you wondering about the people who built it and why.
Peter C — Google review
Essential to visit but worth knowing you can't walk through the menhirs unless you are on a guided tour. Visitor centre is worth having a look around and gives a lot of history and context to the site.
Nick L — Google review
Fascinating place. Good place to walk 3-4 km circular routes. Paths lead through megaliths, woodlands and beautiful wildflower meadows. Lots of birdsong and picnic tables. There is even a crepariarie and glace shop en route 2. Local places hire cycles which you can use to ride around and there is a road train or tuk tuks from Carnac for people who less able. It does get quite warm! Visitor center and gift shop offer lots more info plus tours. We went mid may and blessed with gorgeous weather which helped with enjoyment of the place
Carol M — Google review
Incredible walk through Neolithic standing stones that just keep going on and on! We went out of season so it was fairly quiet, and spent a very happy 2.5 hours pottering around the trail. Not much food and drink available at the visitors center (maybe there is more in season) but the town of Carnac 5 mins down the road is gorgeous, lots of nice restaurants and cafes with a lovely sandy beach.

Market
Nestled in the heart of Lorient, Les Halles de Merville is a vibrant covered market that beckons food lovers and curious travelers alike. Open daily, this bustling hub showcases an impressive array of fresh produce, seafood straight from local waters, artisanal cheeses, and delightful Breton specialties. Whether you visit on a Wednesday or Saturday—when even more stalls are open—you'll be captivated by the lively atmosphere filled with enticing aromas.
Visited on both the Wednesday and Saturday, more stalls open on the latter. Top tip is to follow the queues! Led us to some outstanding produce - ie outside there were multiple strawberry stalls but only one with a big queue. Outstanding fish, seafood, meat, cheese, fruit and vegetables with also Asian, Italian stalls too. Highlights inside include the espresso stand, fish in the middle, multiple cheese vendors. Highlights outside include the home made pasta, strawberries.
Paul — Google review
There's a market just outside which sells an amazing amount of food stuffs and clothing, I'm not sure if it is because of the festival interceltique.
Chris G — Google review
Great market with historic vendors even if it is temporarily housed in a wooden building.

A MUST if you're in de Lorient region - large variety of fresh veggies, fruit, fish, meat, an amazing selection of cheese and fresh, salted butter - don't miss barista close to entry!

Best place if you want to buy fresh and delicious food. You can find almost anything from locally-produced meat to amazing 'crêpes bretonnes', not to forget sea-food coming directly from the harbour. Atmosphere is great, it smells lovely in there, and it's definitely a place to go everyday !

The Base de Sous-Marins, located in the picturesque city of Lorient along Brittany's stunning coastline, is a significant remnant of World War II history. This massive German naval base has been transformed into an engaging museum that offers visitors a unique glimpse into underwater warfare and exploration. With various tours available, including an intriguing visit to a 1960s French submarine and hands-on activities at the marine museum, there's something for everyone.
It was an interesting museum to visit. There are several tours to choose from. We paid 31€ for the marine museum, which has hands-on activities, plus the submarine tour and K3 - where the submarines were built. I suggest pre booking tour tickets - all in French for the K3 bunker - to plan your day properly. Free parking is available adjacent to the venue. There are several cafés nearby for food and drinks. It would have been beneficial to have bi-lingual information boards plus direction signposts.

I really wasn’t expecting to write this however, We were really looking forward to our visit but unfortunately disappointed .☹️ We booked all 3 Tours Submarine Museum with audio guide in English for submarine. The odd bit here and there in English Block K3 + Submarine Flore Block K3 | guided tour S-645 Flore Submarine and its Museum The Block K3 tour guide spoke only French ,No audio guide , no signs in English .No subtitles on the any of the films .So we walked around not knowing what he was saying . It was such a shame we were so looking forward to the tour . You could have a bar code that can be scanned and tell the story as you go round in different languages that would brilliant. On a Good note the La base bar restaurant was very good, ,Food was lovely and staff friendly. Plenty of parking . I did find 1 book in English when we were leaving to go home in the shop after the submarine visit .So you know where to go if you want to find out more buy the book for 10 euros before you visit Block K3 .

They only run tours so pre booking is required. A good story on the building and how the people survived etc. Also there is a good kids playground along the pier front.

What a cool place to visit. We loved going on the submarine! The sailing exhibit had so many hands on things to do and a climbing gym for kids! Good food at the restaurant. Very busy in August.
Susan S — Google review
If you like historical war sites this is well worth a visit. Easy to find, easy parking and comprises of 3 main K submarine bunkers, K 3 for submerged U Boats and K 1 & 2 for pulled out subs. We took the tour in K 3 unfortunately not in English at all, the guide was passionate and talked non stop for the duration stopping at 4 key points for about 20 minutes each time which seemed like hours when you just want to see the pens and roof. This said we loved going to see and walk through the French 1964 submarine on display, really added to understanding the complexity and endurance of underwater crews, this was the highlight for me, the walk through museum was also ok with visual screens etc but the sub was tops 😁toilets available
Chris E — Google review
Great place to visit, alot of history. The submarine is worth seeing, if you can't get a booking online, ask at the desk by the submarine museum for a ticket, I got in even though the website said it was fully booked. Would come again
Benjamin M — Google review
when we used google maps to reach this place it led us to a wrong entrance of the bunker which visitors were prohibited. make sure to check online first to see which bunker/museum you want to visit to not get lost there!

A stunning place it is found a new life in its current time and place . Impressive scenery around it and the tours of the two places inside it such as K3 and the submarine la flore. It is very unfortunate that they don't do English tours more often but the tours of The Only Way you can get inside the bunkers and the sub pens

The Sous-Marin Flore-S645 museum in Lorient offers a unique opportunity to explore the K1 and K3 U-boat pens, providing insight into the region's Cold War history. The well-preserved submarine holds significant historical value for the locals. Visitors can embark on a tour of the K2 section of the submarine, which is thoughtfully laid out and illuminated. The multilingual presentation ensures that guests receive comprehensive information.
A great museum that teaches you about French submarine history and the important role this base had during both WW2 and the Cold War. It was a unique experience to step inside a decommissioned diesel submarine. Arrive early for parking close to the museum.

It's best to book a time slot in advance. It's not an extensive museum but it is interesting and the walk through the submarine with audio commentary is worthwhile.
Motorhome Q — Google review
We took the English speaking tour of the K3 building and then we did the submarine museum with the walk though of the submarine and it was well worth the trip.
George A — Google review
The exhibitions before the tour is very interesting and informative. The audio tour inside the Flore is just perfect. My two girls (18 and 8) enjoyed the museum too. It was an emotional moment for me as I did my first dive in La Flore in 1984 during military service. I feel very lucky I'm able to visit a boat I was once a crew (even for a very short time only). The other submaribe based in Lorient I spend most time on was sent to the scrapyard. I will be back to visit the base (again). Merci!
Joel D — Google review
Amazing history, I didn't manage to get on the U-boat which I'm sure would have been great. Seeing the history of the port is very educational and great few hours out. Little food stalls around when you get hungry too
Chris S — Google review
A great day out, visiting the submarine, museum and submarine pen. The staff are all very friendly and extremely informative, particularly the guide for the k3 pen. Would also recommend the sailing trip around the harbour. Plenty of restaurants to choose from so spoilt for choice.
Trevor L — Google review
We are so glad that we visited the museum and submarine itself. In the museum u can watch 3 films telling us history of Bretagne, times of WW2 and now times. To go inside of the submarine it's a great chance to dive in life of marines. I was with my son, his age is 11 and my friend with the son of the same age.
Veronika — Google review
The tour of K2 of the submarine. It was a great experience. Well laid out. Well lit. The story at the start was interesting. This part of the tour they have multiple languages preset so you get all the information. Visiting k3 and the guided tour was interesting but only available in french and to visit k3 you need a guide. The tour guide had a lot of knowledge and passion but was too fast for myself to translate and was not able to absorb the interesting history and story. K2 and sub is well worth visiting alone. Also a great way to escape when the heat gets to hot.

L'Amphitryon is a renowned two-star Michelin restaurant that attracts food enthusiasts from all over with its innovative cuisine and superb dining experience. The menu showcases a focus on seafood and features creatively inspired dishes with a playful twist. The restaurant offers an elegant modern setting, professional yet charming service, and an exceptional selection of limited vintage wines. Diners can expect beautifully plated culinary creations such as foie gras ravioli with oxtail consomme and truffles, St.
We did the 10 course tasting menu (180 Euro) with wine pairing (100 Euro). A note on pricing --- The price difference between 6 and 8 courses is only 30 euro, 8 courses being 130 euro, so when the delta was 50 euro between 8 and 10 courses I asked what the 2 extra dishes were (meaning appetizer, main, dessert) and they replied they don't know, it's all a surprise. It's subjective but I'd say we had 2 desserts, 2 mains, and 6 appetizers. Also they don't list the wine pairing price for the 10 course but we got it and were charged 100 euro. The food was excellent. It was my first time ever having cockles. The lobster and langoustine were highlights. The service was also exceptional and fast considering how many dishes we received. At the start of the meal we mentioned we'd want a taxi for the ride back and they were able to time our expected completion and had one ready for us. The wine was nice. Most of them from the last 2 years which might be because they only served one red. Still, I was personally hoping for some older vintages.
