Compiegne in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Compiegne, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Compiègne combines regal French history with easy access to nature, centered on its elegant royal palace and formal gardens once used by French kings and Napoleon III. The surrounding Compiègne Forest offers extensive walking and cycling trails, as well as the historic Clairière de l’Armistice, where the 1918 Armistice ending World War I was signed. Its compact old town has a lively main square, Gothic town hall and churches, plus riverfront walks along the Oise. Located about an hour from Paris by train, it works well as a relaxed day trip or quiet base outside the capital.
With favorites like Le Bar du Château / Brasserie Du Château, Parc de Songeons, and Château de Compiègne, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Le Bar du Château and La Brasserie Parisienne so you can get the best taste of Compiegne while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Château de Compiègne is a grand 18th-century palace with a rich history, having served as a royal residence and hunting lodge since the 14th century. The neoclassical palace boasts imposing exteriors from the reworking done by Louis XV, while the luxurious interiors are largely attributed to Napoleon's influence during the First and Second Empires. Visitors can explore historic apartments and two separate museums within its walls.
I was there on a rainy day, so it was perfect to see. It is very charming you also get a free audio guide. It cost €10. In the basement, there is a cool selection of horse carriages and some very interesting oldtimers.

This was the real highlight of our holiday in the area, we visited three times in total! So many things to see in the apartments, we also enjoyed a meal in the rose garden cafe on two days.

Château de Compiègne Visited during “siesta o’clock” and had the whole château almost to ourselves — even free entry! Beautiful antique furniture, detailed curation, and impressive artwork made it a joy to explore. The stuffed bear was unforgettable, if bittersweet. Peaceful, elegant, and far less crowded than France’s bigger attractions. Our visit to the Château de Compiègne was an unexpected highlight of our trip. We arrived during what I can only assume was “siesta o’clock,” which meant free entry — already enough to put a smile on my face. What followed was even better: we practically had the entire château to ourselves. Wandering through the grand rooms with only a handful of other visitors made the experience feel special, almost as if we’d been granted private access. The château is beautifully curated, with antique furniture and decorative pieces that help bring the history of its former occupants to life. Each room had thoughtful detail and context, particularly around the artefacts and artwork on display. The art collection was a real highlight, with paintings and sculptures that gave a vivid sense of the château’s past. And then there was the stuffed bear — unusual, slightly out of place, and somehow memorable. I couldn’t help but admire it while also feeling a little sad for the unfairness of its death. Overall, the Château de Compiègne offered a far more relaxed and authentic cultural experience compared to some of France’s more famous attractions. With fewer crowds, a strong sense of history, and a beautifully maintained collection, it’s a place I’d recommend wholeheartedly.
Mark N — Google review
I absolutely loved the chateau of compiegne. It is similar to the ones in paris yet it is not crowded at all, you can enjoy seeing the pieces and the arts without having to clamor with the hundreds of other tourists. It is quaint with parking space in front of it and gardens that are free in the back. Great experience and the ticket lady was super friendly, so was the lady at the security check.
Mike A — Google review
The Château de Compiègne is a remarkable place, rich in history and charm. Each room tells a story, offering a fascinating glimpse into France’s royal past. Excellent value for money, and the fact that children can enter for free makes it even more appealing for families. A truly memorable visit that I would highly recommend.

Nestled in the charming town of Compiègne, the Théâtre Impérial de Compiègne boasts a rich history that dates back to its commissioning by Napoleon III in 1867. Originally intended as a venue for royal entertainment, its construction was halted due to the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War and remained incomplete for over a century. It wasn't until 1987 that work resumed, culminating in its grand inauguration in 1991 as Picardy's exclusive opera house.
Very impressive both historically and architecturally. Perfect for musical performances due to the limited decor (contrary to the Italian style theaters in Paris) and plenty of wood to minimise echoes.

Restaurant Les Accordailles is a charming and authentic French establishment where the staff may not be fluent in English, but having a local French companion ensures a seamless experience. The menu is concise, but it's worth trying the daily special as it features surprising combinations of high-quality ingredients that are skillfully prepared and generously portioned. Despite initial concerns about pricing, Restaurant Les Accordailles is on par with other dining establishments in the city.
Surprising combinations of excellent ingredients, perfectly prepared and generously served. We initially thought it would be pricey but no more than the other restaurants in the city. We left with cooking inspiration and a (very) full tummy. Absolutely delicious!

This fantastic restaurant might fly under the radar at the corner of the Chateau, but shouldn't be overlooked! Lovely friendly and knowledgeable service - every option was delicious. The burrata salad and the beef (in any dish) really shining through. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting for a cosy meal with wonderful ingredients.

Welcoming staff. Table without nap but cotton serviettes, so you put your bread on plain table :( 3 courses menu 29e but most interesting dishes 'a la carte'. Count then 35e including dessert. Taste is OK but not wonder. Wine list more interesting. Bio. Wines. I recommend the Tautavel.

A small and quaint place that is truly French. If the woman who waited on us knew much English, she was hiding it, but we were there with a local French person, so it was fine. There weren't a lot of things on the menu, but this is the kind of place where you definitely want to have the daily special.

This was my first visit to La Brasserie Parisienne, and it was incredibly delightful. The waiter was friendly and possessed a great sense of humor. He provided excellent service, ensuring that all of our needs were met. The cuisine was tasty and reasonably priced. Despite the warm weather, the airflow inside the establishment was refreshing. Opting for indoor seating at the front allowed for a fantastic vantage point of the bustling streets and lively pedestrians going about their day-to-day activities.
This restaurant was excellent! The service was attentive, friendly and in English! Merci! I appreciated that they serve dinner before 7 pm. I had the Ficelle Picard: it was so good, I ate the whole thing! It's super filling, so I'm not sure why this is an appetizer?? The steak was cooked perfectly as were the fries. I was full, so they gave me dessert to go! 30 euros for a wonderful experience.

Everything was more or less fine (albeit slow and inattentive service) until we discovered an insect in one of our plates. We handed it back and stopped eating although most other plates were finished when the insect was discovered. The waiter accepted to not charge for the affected plate but to our strong surprise, we did not offer any explanation or apology of any sort for the incident, hardly a word just took our plate. We left feeling it was our fault for raising the subject. Maybe it’s not the first time. Won’t be going back.

(Translated by Google) The place is nice and warm but the tables are too close to each other. The waitresses are pleasant and smiling but the service is slow (probably kitchen...) and there are a few errors / omissions (not very serious but demonstrate a certain disorganization). Moreover, even if I gave 3 for the food, the menu lacks real cooked dishes (no fish, vegetables, cooked meat) just burgers, steak served with fries or salads. We had the roasted Camembert but coming from Normandy I was disappointed by the taste of it (it is probably not a real Camembert) and the 5 berries must have been forgotten. In short, overall quite disappointed. The prices are reasonable and the wines pleasant.

Fadi, the owner, was very friendly, he made sure every customer is satisfied. We had a looong talk with him🤍. Gonna visit again for sure.

First time trying Lebonase food and there were some high points for me, but overall not my favorite meal I've had since visiting France. The inside is lovely, but it was too hot to really enjoy the meal. Also, we were orginally turned away, but the server came outside and told us the stove hadn't been turned off. We were under the impression they stayed open later because it was listed as closing at 1pm. The appetizer were good, but I didn't enjoy the lamb as much as I thought I would. The lamb wasn't cooked evenly and the lamb kabob didn't have as much flavor as I thought it would. The garlic sauce we liked, but I was disappointed with the experience.

As an international sales manager I've been to many countries and I've tried almost all the kitchens worldwide and up to now the oriental food specifically the Lebanese's been my #1 choice. Here in Germany I was extremely lucky, yesterday, to be in Phonecia restaurant. Honestly it's the best EVER! the food was incredibly tasty, the staff was cheerful and helpful and the managers were so warmly welcoming! In a word, it's really WOW! A huge thank you guys for your efforts! and definitely I'm encouraging each and every one to try your savoury food.

Great food choices. friendly waitress and delicious food . A bit pricey but worth it . They have some suggested menus which I would recommend otherwise you can also go for a la carte. Unfortunately they did not have a menu card in English and I had a tough time to translate them !
