The casino has been a popular entertainment venue since the 1930s and features a modernist design inspired by Garnier. It is one of the largest and most impressive casinos in Portugal.
An important landmark in Povoa de Varzim. The area around always has a festive look.

I’ve only seen slot machines and blackjack in the casino a long with the roulette. Personally, I’m not a big fan of this games since I was expecting poker. For that and for the reason that there wasn’t an interesting show the night we went there, I gave it two stars.

Nice casino, a bit old-fashioned, mostly local customers, informal atmosphere, and overall it's not Las Vegas. You can definitely spend a fun couple of hours here, even if you have ten euros in your pocket.

Castelo da Póvoa, also known as Nossa Senhora da Conceição Fortress, is a historic Portuguese fortress located above the harbor of Povoa de Varzim. It was constructed between 1701 and 1740 during the reigns of Peter II and John V to protect the town from raids by privateers. The fortress replaced an earlier structure known as Forte de Torrao dating back to the 1400s.
Amazing place with an incredible view. There's also a fantastic restaurant called "eLleBê". The food, the staff and the place itself are excellent!

Neat small fort that allows you to explore both levels. The tourist office was closed due to Covid so couldn't get any history. Several restaurants/bars inside. Be sure to find the guard's bathroom! (See my pics).

Flea & Street Markets
Mercado Municipal de Vila do Conde is a historic and lively market located in the old town center of Vila do Conde. The Friday fair offers a wide range of products including fresh produce, plants, cut flowers, bread, cured meats, cheeses, and non-food items. Visitors can also explore the fixed shops and cages that operate on other days for local cuisine.
The municipal Mercado or market in Vila do Conde old town centre. Although, a weekly market operates on Friday in the open area. There are fixed shops and cages too which operate on other days too. Visit for local cuisine. The Friday market is very popular.
Praveen M — Google review
A wonderful market! I’m so glad I made the trip from Porto. The antique market, Feira de Antiguidades, is every 3rd Sunday of the month from 9:30 - 17:00. This market had so many wonderful vendors and had more vintage items and antiquities than many other markets in the region. I got some amazing deals on some amazing items. I just wish I brought my cart so I could have bought more! Unlike the market in Maia on Sunday, there are many restaurants that are open in the area. So we made a day of antiquing, enjoying the springtime tulips in the park, and having a wonderful lunch near Praça de Republica. The closest metro stop is Santa Clara on the Póvoa de Varzim line. There are public restrooms available at the venue and are free. I’m sure as the weather gets warmer, there will be many more vendors. I’m definitely going back very soon! This review was posted February, 2025.

Absolutely a must! If you adore antiques and believe that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure then I highly suggest dropping by, held on certain Sunday’s for a complete different experience too!

The Friday fair in Vila do Conde takes place here. While small compared to Barcelos or Espino, it is still an excellent place for fresh produce, plants, cut flowers, bread, cured meats and cheeses as well as a good assortment of non-food items and clothing. Parking is usually difficult but there is an underground garage in the area that almost always has space.
Pamela K — Google review
The Friday and Saturday market is a good source for your weekly produce. The Friday market is the larger of the two can get clothing and household goods. Watch the prices and don't be afraid to walk away and try another vendor.

Saura Cool is a delightful and tranquil establishment, offering a pleasant atmosphere for enjoying a beer with friends or indulging in a satisfying dinner. Their portions are generous, the menu selection is excellent, and the dishes they serve are truly remarkable! The restaurant also shows special consideration towards pilgrims, ensuring their needs are met. To conclude an evening at Saura Cool on a sweet note, one can enjoy grappa al miel accompanied by warm hospitality.
This lovely, cozy restaurant/cafe is situated at the beginning of Vila do conde by the market Nicely revamped and decorated. Great family charming environment makes it an ideal place for a relaxed meal.A perfect pit stop for cyclists with a lovely big terrace where one can sit and see the traffic coming into the city. They are really cyclists friendly!!! .Mr João is so polite helpful and friendly, going above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Thanks for the wonderful care specifically given to us. Definitely do recommend this restaurant!!!

Excellent food and very professional service. Mr. Luis took great care of our group of pilgrims. It’s a great place for those walking the Camino de Santiago, as it offers an excellent dining option as soon as you arrive in the city of Vila do Conde. We’ll definitely be back!

Restaurant with a large and agréable terrasse. Thé service was fast. For food we got clamares and polvo panado. Both were good in particular the polvo (octopus), it was in the right spot between tender and chewy. For main dishes, we got two dishes of the day: rabinho de bovino com purée and filetes with rice. The quality was lower here. The rice was not properly cooked. For the rabinho, the taste was ok, but there was very little to eat. I know that rabinho de bovino has a lot bone by definition, but I would expect to have more pieces. The plates was full there was room. The prices are affordable.

After having spent a good time in Vila Do Condo and it’s beaches, on our way back we stopped here for coffee. The place is very popular amongst the local people. At that time football match was on and people were enjoying it over coffee and beer. Very reasonably priced and good ambiance.

We liked all the reviews and decided to give it a try, they were wrong!!! worst meal out in Portugal, slow service, cold plates, luke warm food, complete lack of Interest from staff. TV in cafe part on football. Owner decided that second TV above where we sat should be on even though no one to watch it. Overall - never again. Use at your peril.

Sushi restaurant
Nestled by the river, Romando Sushi Caffe offers a delightful dining experience in a serene and inviting atmosphere. The attentive staff ensures that every guest feels welcomed and well taken care of. Guests rave about the delicious sushi, showcasing fresh fish and beautifully presented dishes like the Unagi roll, which is almost too stunning to eat! While some cocktails may lean towards the bitter side, they complement the traditional flavors of the sushi perfectly.
Wonderful location, super nice place, by the river, comfortable and good ambience. The staff is nice and attentive, super polite and ready to help us at all times. The food was great, delicious sushi, top notch experience! The drinks were a bit strange, the cocktails we tried were both on the bitter side, which is fine, but since the sushi wasn’t sweet at all - it was more traditional than fusion in terms of flavours - the whole mean missed some excitement. But rest assured that the quality was incredible. Overall, it was a great experience. PS - The 40 piece set is good for 3 people minimum. For two people is far too much, we had to struggle to finish everything, even when it was so amazing. Order wisely!
Pedro N — Google review
Great experience for a japanese themed restaurant. The options extended well beyond sushi like such as delicious eel ad with the gunkan waguy being an absolute treat to end the meal prior to desert.

Delicious and very fresh Sushi and food. The ponzu sauce of the Uzuzukuri was slightly too spicy for the delicate scallops. Service friendly but a little slow. Temperature in the restaurant was too hot (it was was a very hot day though, and maybe the A/C was not strong enough. Nice location at the river and marine in Vila do Conde.

Restaurant
Recanto do Luís is a restaurant that offers delicious cuisine and generous portions suitable for sharing among two individuals. The food is well-prepared, with an emphasis on grilling, resulting in fresh and flavorful dishes. However, the service provided by the waitstaff needs improvement as it can be slow and unprofessional at times, leading to lengthy waiting periods for customers. Despite this drawback, overall the experience at Recanto do Luís is positive, but there are opportunities for enhancement.
Service with a smile. Nice Authentic food, good atmosphere. Couldn’t wish for anything more

Food is good. A good portion for 1/2 dose serves well for two people well coked and fresh cooked (grilled). Service was to slow and not very professional as the waiter was forgetting about our orders all the time which made us wait for food too long. Overall the experience was good but needs some improvements.

Good food, very busy and service a bit slow,
Rui F — Google review
The food is ok, but if I could I would give 0 stars just because of the service. The waiters are very slow and you have to repeat yourself many times until they give you what you asked for. Although all of that was already a problem the cherry on top of the cake was the way the waiter treated me, it was a disrespect. I refused the desert and he said that I was right to do so because I was fat. I’m paying, I’m the costumer and I still need to hear this jokes. It’s a shame such a nice restaurant to have this kind of service.

If you're on the hunt for a delightful culinary experience, look no further than Restaurante Asiático. This self-service buffet offers an impressive selection of Asian cuisine, featuring everything from savory Chinese dishes to fresh sushi. The variety is truly remarkable, ensuring that every palate finds something to savor. Guests rave about the quality of the food, particularly the fried rice and tender shrimp dishes that evoke a comforting home-cooked feel.
During on walking Camino Portuguese on Apr. 2023, I had a lunch here. Price is OK and the food is good. It is buffet style and you can eat what you want.

I've walked by here many times but never walked in. More to my loss. I had lunch here and enjoyed their buffet very much. There was a very wide array of dishes to choose from, all very tasty and not salty. The buffet is a great value for what you're paying. There is no dedicated parking for the place but there is abundant street parking. I especially enjoyed their fried rice, which had a homey feel, and their chicken with mushrooms. They also serve beer, wine, and liquor.

Buffet /self service with a wide variety and selection of asian food. Lots of food for a very reasonable price. Service was great and food was quality Chinese at an affordable price considering that you have your desert Included .You can ask for different types of spices if you want. The need to focus on more vegetables. The restaurant is spacious enough to accommodate customers eating in, and at prime times when needed.Modern basic restaurant cozy interior clean and nice. located close to the beach but not that easy to find nor to park your car.If you live in the nearby neighborhood They also have take-away buffet where you can come and choose your food put it in a plastic container supplied by the restaurant. Would definitely recommend this restuarant

You get what you pay for. The quality of the food matched the price. Fair enough. Nevertheless, all the food was cold and each dish was incredibly salty. I did not dare to touch the ice cream. The freezer was very dirty. The microwave was covered in oil. Staff with dirty, unwashed clothing. I went to the bar to order some drinks and found one of the ladies filling up the jelly dessert with.... her hands. Terrible dirty place. Never again.

Delicious! All crevettes and meat dishes are very tasty, the welcoming pan with fried crevettes and slices of meat is very tender and really delicious. Fruits for desert are fresh and well served. Cakes and interior could be improved a little, but it's not the main for me. For the price they have it's a perfect choice! I have no photos of this place, I was busy with food! 😉😋

You need reservations to visit, so be sure to call a few days before. We visited on a Monday in August and it wasn’t busy, but they were fully booked the week before. They have an amazing set-up which allows them to accommodate several age groups and group sizes. Our twins are very adventurous, so this was perfect first us! Additionally, they had plenty of staff that spoke English, which was a real help! We are learning Portuguese, but have a long way to go! The girls both loved the zip line the most, but we caught the biggest smiles on the horses! Their biggest sense of accomplishment was walking the ropes course in the tree canopy, while climbing the rock wall gave them the most fright! LOL! There is a cafe and bar available. When closed, there are vending machines for snacks and coffee. We brought our own picnic lunch and it was perfect. The staff did make sure that the kids paid attention to safety instructions and even threatened to remove them from the activity of they couldn’t pay attention amd follow the instructions! I LOVED THAT! They could get seriously hurt if they don’t follow instructions so I was perfectly fine with this! Thank you Azurara! Restrooms are clean. Some of the wood is old and the stairs at the zip-line seemed dangerous. They also had a charcoal grill on an old dry wooden deck. So, there are definitely a few safety hazards, so be cautious of when visiting. Overall, we still give it a 5 star review. We are looking forward to coming back soon!
Brian J — Google review
The place is wonderful! It is inside nature and the atmosphere is great! The team here provides a lot of activities that are very interesting and fun. They are very organized and clean. Me and some friends that visited the park altogether had the best time here because everyone is very friendly too!

We had lots of fun on our day out doing archery and canoeing. The staff were happy to guide us through the activities and were very helpful.
Esteban L — Google review
The activity park had potential, but the activities themselves were too simple and lacked excitement. It would have been great to see more creativity and variety. The park was completely empty during our visit, which made it feel a bit abandoned. One of the biggest disappointments was the walk to the activities: what could have been a scenic and pleasant stroll was ruined by the smell of horse droppings scattered along the way. While the activities area itself didn’t smell, the poorly maintained path really took away from the experience. With better activities, more vibrant surroundings, and improved maintenance, this park could offer so much more.
Matilde A — Google review
Very nice park and staff. Lots of outdoor activities. The kids loved the paintball! This time of year (January) is not suitable to enjoy the water front activities - we may return when the weather is warmer.

Nestled along the picturesque Cais da Alfandega on the River Ave, the Nau Quinhentista stands as a magnificent full-scale replica of a 16th-century Portuguese carrack. Launched in 2007, this vessel showcases traditional carpentry and rope-making techniques that hark back to Portugal's rich maritime heritage.
So amazing! It’s beautiful how you can see the way they used to live inside ⚓️

The museum is small, but displays beautiful scale models of 16th century ships. The true scale 16th century ship moored in front of the museum (the Nau Quinhentista) is superb and must by all means be visited. When I checked the museum information online, after my visit, I learned that I should also have visited the nearby Casa do Barco. Unfortunately, no one at the reception gave me that information.

Nau Quinhentista in Vila do Conde refers to a specific replica of a 16th-century Portuguese ship, located in the town of Vila do Conde, in northern Portugal. Vila do Conde has a rich maritime history and was an important shipbuilding center during the Age of Discoveries. The replica serves as a cultural and educational attraction, giving visitors a glimpse into the maritime heritage of Portugal. Key points about the Nau Quinhentista in Vila do Conde include: 1. **Replica Ship**: The Nau Quinhentista in Vila do Conde is a meticulously crafted replica of a 16th-century Portuguese carrack (nau). It represents the type of ship used during the Age of Discoveries for long voyages to Africa, Asia, and the Americas. 2. **Construction and Features**: The replica showcases the design, structure, and sailing capabilities of the original ships. It includes details such as the ship's hull, masts, sails, and armament, providing a comprehensive understanding of how these ships were built and operated. 3. **Cultural and Educational Significance**: The Nau Quinhentista serves as a museum ship, offering guided tours and educational programs. Visitors can explore the ship, learn about its construction, and gain insights into the life of sailors during the Age of Discoveries. The ship is an important tool for preserving and promoting Portuguese maritime heritage. 4. **Location**: The replica is docked at the waterfront in Vila do Conde, a town known for its historical connection to shipbuilding and navigation. The town's maritime museum, Museu de Construção Naval, is also located nearby, providing additional context and historical information. 5. **Events and Activities**: The Nau Quinhentista is often part of local maritime festivals and events, celebrating Vila do Conde's seafaring traditions. These events highlight the historical significance of Portuguese exploration and the town's role in the Age of Discoveries. The Nau Quinhentista in Vila do Conde is a valuable cultural asset, offering a tangible link to Portugal's illustrious maritime past and its contributions to global exploration and trade.

In my opinion, one of the best things in Vila do Conde. The ship (which is a new one, but built exactly like an antique one) is definitely worth a visit. Even if you won't have a guide or explanation signs, the ship is very well made and makes you feel the atmosphere of the Portuguese sailors. The ticket has to be bought in the museum in front of the ship and it's just 2€ (you will also gets access to the museum)

Built in 2007 in the waters of Rio Ave, the replica of the 16th century ship, built by the shipyards Samuel & Filhos, LDA, from Vila do Conde, is an important and precious complement to the Museum Régia Museum nucleus - Museum of Shipbuilding. In addition to an important element of tourist and playful attraction, it has a pedagogical function, because, built with the greatest respect for the scientific investigations of the responsibility of Admiral Rogério D 'Oliveira, incorporates the ancestral knowledge of carpenters and calafates of the VilaConde watches.

Replica of a 1500s ship. Interesting to visit, but hard to imagine how life on the boat might have been like, because there is no labelling whatsoever. Good for kids, as they are allowed to climb the many ladders and explore every nook and cranny. Not a good option if one has any type of mobility issues. Tickets are 2€ (September 2022) and include entry to the museum.

Cost a euro each to get in and not a lot there but for a euro it was very well done and informative

The Igreja Matriz de São João Baptista is a marvelous church that was constructed between 1496 and 1518, showcasing the rich sculpture in the Manueline style. This architectural gem is adorned with intricate carvings on its main portal, representing a fusion of Late Gothic and Spanish Plateresque styles. The church's construction was initiated during King D.
Lovely Church with a Camino Stamp for Pilgrims. Very ornate

Beautiful church sits above the Vila do Conde market. Fantastic frescos, argoiles and stain glass windows. It is as if the building were sand blasted. For October 5th, a national holiday, we watched a very cute, traditional parade. See the video. Very proud marchers.

The construction of the Matrix of Vila do Conde was driven with the passage of King D. Manuel I by Vila do Conde, on his way to Compostela, in 1502, which in addition to a personal contribution poured taxes on the people and the nuns of Santa Clara to the construction of the new matrix. The fair of the Fair of the Fair, of December 5, 1502, gave precise instructions on how this church should be built. However, this project was widely changed with the construction of the Absidial Chapels (1507) - today dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and SS. Sacrament. Note the construction of the portico and the influence of João de Castilho, at this time. In 1518, the date of sacred, the Church had three ships and only later acquired a cruciform projection with the construction of the transept chapels: the Holy Body or Our Lady of Boa Viagem (1542) and that of St. Miguel-O-Anjo or Our Lady of the Assumption in (1561). The Vila do Conde matrix was thus voted as a markedly Manueline space, for the maritime motifs expressed in the decoration of the portal, the chapels arcs (especially the transepto), the baptismal source and the rich decoration of the vaels of the Mor, Absidial Chapels and the transepto. The following centuries brought the enrichment from their interior. In the seventeenth century the bell tower was built. In the eighteenth century the interiors of the churches adorned with the golden carving, the result of the gold that the Portuguese removed from Brazil. The matrix was made up of thirteen gilded altaries, which today present themselves in this way: on the side of the Gospel - Lord of Bonfim, St. Anthony, Our Lady of Piedade, Our Lady of the Assumption (Chapel of the Transept), Our Lady of the Rosary ( ABSIDIAL CAPELA); On the Epistle side the altarpieces of Our Lady of Conception, souls of purgatory, Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady of the Boa Viagem (transept) and Blessed Sacrament (Absidial Chapel). The Mor Chapel has a altarpiece, with throne under the panel that represents the baptism of Christ by St. John the Baptist and, below this, the image of St. John the Baptist, flanked by the images of St. Gabriel and Our Lady Mother of God. Of the eighteenth century is the pulpit and the panel of the sacristy. In the twentieth century, under the impulse of the canon mons. José Augusto Ferreira did an important work of improvement. The openings were covered by Polychromic stained glass seasons in France: the central window represents the last supper; The naves the life and death of St. John the Baptist. In 1908 the Commander Bento d'Aguiar offered the pipe organ.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Lapa, also known as the Lighthouse Church, is a charming chapel with a rich history dating back to the 16th century. Its traditional Portuguese architectural style offers visitors a glimpse into the past, evoking a sense of nostalgia and simplicity. As one of the oldest churches in Povoa de Varzim, it has served as a beacon for sailors and a place of prayer for many.

Adega do Monte is a restaurant located in Vila do Conde, which offers a truly delightful dining experience. Despite arriving late at 11 pm after a long drive, the staff warmly welcomed the visitors and provided them with an excellent meal. The menu consisted of delicious items such as bread, cheese, ham, caldo verde, lamb, wine, and port.
Terrific restaurant. Highly recommend it. Right beside the monastery and aquaduct so every tourist walks by, but it was only locals in the restaurant. Wood-fired roasting oven so good selection of roasted goat, lamb, pork and beef. Octopus was fork-tender. Very reasonably priced for the quality. Menu has English translations and servers spoke excellent English.

I have very mixed feelings about restaurant. Food was fine but nothing I could remember or recommend. At least I was full, it was good, I felt satisfied and that’s it, so strong 4⭐️ received. But restaurant has one of the best locations in the city! I remember sunny afternoon near beautifully historical place, in front was the cutest fountain, tables have exactly enough shadow and waiters were friendly and welcoming for pilgrims, no matter for my dirty cloths and huge backpack. I appreciated the atmosphere so definitely can recommend everyone who is in their way to Santiago to stop here, have a lunch and enjoy the moment

Date day lunch spot. First of all, the location is fantastic. Service was amazing from the beginning till the end. The menu had many items to choose from. We shared the Vitelo and a fantastic bottle of wine. Chef Filipe & Francisco were informative & friendly. We can’t wait to dine again.

What an explosion of tastes! The freshness of ingredients, and the love to the food, and attention to recipes that the wonderful owner shared with us enhanced every bite. Great tapas bar, and an overly generous host. Food is simple, unadulterated and so good. We were there early, when it opened, so wasn't overly busy, but I imagine the atmosphere later on would be great. Well worth a visit.

I did a review and quickly disappear. So here it goes again. All the bad reviews are not far from the True. Me and a colleague while walking to Santiago decided to have the lamb which it was reffered by the tourist office Lady. 4 pieces of Bones 3 small and one medium with barely no Meat in it. Basically 35 euros for roasted potatoes rice, some greens and bones. The person who I order from dissapear and so did the waitress at the time to pay. She barely came to the table. They even charged us 2 euros for regular (tap) water saying it was "from the machine". 2 euros for 2 pieces of old bread. I have dined all over Portugal, this is by far the worst place. Disrespectfull and dishonest. For the onwers: Every time you delete my review I will repost and in 5 diferente languages including Português as soon as I get my hands on my lap top

We arrived in Vila do Conde late, at 11 pm, after a long drive, and needed to find dinner. Despite it being not long before closing, they welcomed us in cheerfully and gave us a truly delicious meal that we loved. Excellent bread, cheese and ham, caldo verde, lamb, wine, and a glass of port to finish it off. And while the food was great, it was the genuine friendliness that made it such a great antidote to our family's tiring day.

Restaurant
The service at Bifeiros was extremely attentive. The food was exceptionally delicious, and the dining area had a minimalistic decor upon arrival. The option to request a rare steak resulted in the provision of a sizzling hot stone for cooking, accompanied by buttery mustard. Additionally, the steak knives provided were exceedingly sharp as expected, with the added gesture of allowing customers to select their own knives to ensure hygiene. Overall, the experience at Bifeiros was highly satisfactory and worth revisiting.
The steak here is absolutely outstanding—so tender it almost melts, and with a flavor that’s very different from what you’d find in the U.S. What really sets it apart is their special sauce, which adds a unique richness to every bite. The fries are just as impressive—crispy, perfectly seasoned, and the ideal complement to the meal. If you’re walking the Camino and happen to pass by this spot, I highly recommend stopping in. Take a break, sit down, and treat yourself to lunch here—you won’t regret it!

A terrible experience, we were the first table there during lunch time 13:10, during which we ordered 2 starter and 2 main course meals. We tried to order some seafood and were told that most of them weren’t available at the moment, so we opted for the steaks. When we were choosing the side dishes, again, we where told that they don’t have chips. The starters was served at 13:20 which was quite fast, and the mushroom was pretty decent, sweet and savoury. BUT the steaks only came at 14:10!!! Keep in mind that we got to the restaurant at 13:10 and we were the first customers in the inteire restaurant!!! The steaks were too “chewy”, totally not worth the price, the sauce was quite nice. The waitress was really nice, but the whole experience was terrible.

Service was very considerate. Food was really good. The room was literally empty as we walked in, so we really couldn't ask for more. We asked for a rare steak, but they still provided a hot stone, where we could leave the steak on with some buttery musturd. Nice touch. The steak knives were very sharp (as they should be), and they also asked us to pick our own knives so they wouldn't touch them. Another nice touch. Overall, a very good experience. Nice find. Will certainly go back. 90eur for 4 people, including drinks, starters and desserts.

Restaurante Alfândega is a fantastic establishment with an excellent position and delectable seafood offerings. It has been observed that opting for a half serving is sufficient for one individual, while a full serving would easily satisfy two. The prices are reasonable as well. The cuisine is top-notch, and the setting provides a pleasant ambiance in the shade, offering views of the caravel. Average prices make this place even more appealing. Grilled fish lovers will particularly appreciate their offerings.
Super fresh fish. Simple fare. Locals eat here. Fresh and flavoursome, no nonsense home cooking. Coming from the UK, I had forgotten everything had flavour: lettuce, olives, olive oil, onions, lemons and potatoes.

This was one of my least favorite restaurant visits, ever. You’ll have to be submitted to a system of “writing on a paper and waiting for someone to call you” this takes about 1h as it’s very unorganized and outdated. Once finally seated, the food takes another 30m to 1h per our experience and watching surroundings. About 5 waiters for 20-30 tables! Unacceptable We came at 12h and by 15h were trying to ask a waiter for the dessert menu. Food itself is OK, not worth the hassle.

Terrible management and service. Came with a reservation for 16 people during one of the busiest nights in the region (São João) and they have only a single grill for about 100 customers sitting outside. Waited from 19:30 to 21:30 for the first dose of grilled sardines to be served to our table (12 sardines). The frustration is palpable on the tables around us. The servants are doing their best to calm the customers down. Still super disappointing on such a special night.

I love Portugal and everything about it, however I was quite disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. I was a solo person and when I got a table a waitress removed the extra plate and the cutlery but when my started arrived (shrimps), nobody wanted to turn my plate, so I had to do it myself. The dip was bland. I got my main dish (grilled octopus). On numerous occasions I had to ask to get new cutlery because I used the first set with my starter and I couldn’t eat it just with a spoon, which was placed on the plate when I was served the dish. I was about to attempt to eat it with a spoon because I waited sooo long for a knife and fork. However, once I got the cutlery, again I was a bit disappointed because food was lacking the flavour… On numerous occasions I also asked for a napkin, as I used one for my starter, however never received one… Also I ordered a bottle of wine which was just placed on the table without pouring it into my glass… so pretty much my experience was like eating at home not at the restaurant. When I asked for a bill, I waited and waited again. Asked for a bill several waitresses when eventually one said “inside” and walked off. Inside as it’s getting ready for me or inside as I need to go inside to pay the bill??? A simple explanation- please go inside to pay the bill would have been appreciated. C’mon it’s not that difficult to be polite even with a language barrier… I know just very basic Portuguese but I wasn’t feeling comfortable when it got quite obvious that for some reason waitresses started talking about me… Overall, I think that all customers deserve the best quality of services.

I went there twice. This is kinda of an expensive place but you understand more clearly where your money is going. The whole place is very comfortable, with nice chairs and sofas, and tables well spaced between each other. Provides you with a cozy and private evening. All the food is excellent. But not the kind of small gourmet, small dishes. Instead, proper sized dishes that warm you inside and leaves you wishing you had a bigger stomach. I feel this is the case for meat and fish dishes alike. We were also at the bar for some cocktails before dinner. They seem to have a wide variety of drinks and the person doing them seemed to know what they were doing. We enjoyed them very much. The whole service is professional, not intrusive, quick, and make you feel comfortable. We ate several dishes there, but I’ll choose to criticise one dessert: the tiramisu. I don’t like it. It is kinda of a re-invention with a different kind of biscuits and forest fruits sauce on top. There is no coffee flavour. The biscuit is denser. I don’t know if it is categorically worse or this is just my expectation from a traditional tiramisu. Either way, I don’t like it and I feel that, if one is doing a version of such a widely known dessert, it has to be substantially better. Nonetheless, I hope I have the opportunity to return there many more times!

Interesting interior, quite dark. Looks as if you're entering a Russian mafia dungeon. All black and gold. If that's not really your thing, upstairs they have a white restaurant. All white and gold. We entered the establishment and it was barely empty, playing football on a gigantic screen. The service is poor. The Maître d' will not greet you. He will come to the table and ask for what you want. We ordered a variety of sushi and sashimi, when we questioned the types of fish between the prive and the standard, he didn't really know how to explain. It was a "house thing". They served Voss sparkling water but they only have small bottles. We stayed with cocktails for the night, and funny enough, the bartender was the nicest of the staff. The food is quite a show as they use dry ice to create a smoky effect. Overall the food is not amazing for the price tag. Not worth the trip of 15kms from Porto city centre.

Looks nicer on the photos than in real life. We thought it would be a fancy fine dining place but it looks somewhat cheap in real life and has more of a club feeling. We had some language issues as none of the waiters understood English very well and they don’t have an English menu. Don’t know if that was due to the language barrier but we got the wrong dishes. The Igreja Paroquial de Nosso Senhor dos Navegantes (also known as Igreja das Caxinas) is a remarkable Catholic church situated near the renowned neighborhood of Caxinas, which is famous for its fishing community. This unique church, resembling a boat in its architecture, was constructed in 1985 to replace an older one dating back to 1928.
This is my hometown church and is so beautiful. Located in the fisherman’s town of Caxinas in front of the beach. This church as a particular boat shape in memory of all the fishermen. Such a beautiful place to visit

Fascinating and well-constructed exhibition on Vila de Conde from stone age to recently. Also an art exhibition and a couple of rooms set as they would have been as a villa. Unfortunately all in Portuguese with no other languages at all. This needs to be addressed if they want visitors from other countries.

Museu das Rendas de Bilros, located in the Casa do Vinhal townhouse dating back to the 1700s, is dedicated to preserving Vila do Conde's traditions, particularly the art of bobbin lace making. Visitors can admire delicate examples of local lacework displayed in cabinets and attached to period clothing. The museum also features the largest certified bobbin lace in the world and offers live demonstrations of lace making during weekdays.

My partner is a textile artist, so this was an essential place to visit. It was only €2 for entrance. The lady at reception was very welcoming. The documentary footage was good. There were lots of examples of work on display. However, the highlights were the Guinness World Record bobbin lace piece, and seeing someone working on some bobbin lace in person. A short but nice visit!

Nice museum. Consider visiting only if you have free time in Vila do Conde. It only costs 2€ and during the week you will find real artisans at work. I visited the museum in Sunday and there was no one. The presence of the workers can surely make this place interesting, otherwise it is not a must-see attraction.

If you're on the hunt for a memorable dining experience, look no further than Relíquia. This charming eatery offers an impressive selection of meat, seafood, and vegetarian tapas that will tantalize your taste buds. The cozy ambiance is enhanced by traditional music, making it perfect for a night out with friends or a romantic dinner. Guests rave about the clams cooked in a delectable onion, garlic, white wine, and coriander sauce—a true standout dish!
Excellent dinning experience and great service from Augusto. Fantastic range of meat, seafood and vegetarian tapas. Good Portuguese wines on offer. Nice, cosy atmosphere with traditional ambient music. The clams in a rich onion, garlic white wine and coriander sauce is especially worthy of mention. All food was really tasty using good, local ingredients. Excellent value for money so well worth the 5 star rating.

Unfortunately I cannot completely agree with the positive reviews. When we visited, food ranged from ok (stewed pork) to completely void of any taste and suspiciously looking like straight from the freezer section (calamari). Dishes that were obviously homemade and prepared to order (sauteed vegetables) were good. Prices are low, and maybe we were just unlucky with the dishes we chose, but I would not go back.

Casa Venceslau, a charming family-owned establishment that encompasses both a restaurant and hotel, offers exceptional customer service and delectable cuisine at affordable prices. Their in-house wine is exquisite, and the hotel rooms are spotless and conveniently located. This place comes highly recommended for any pilgrim on the Camino as it is situated near the route, providing much-needed respite after a long day's walk.
This place is a one of the best restaurants I have encountered in Portugal so far. The restaurant was packed when I got there around noon. I ordered the lunch special. $13.68 for meat with pasta, 1/2 bottle of house wine, glass of red Porto, and glass of white Porto. All of it was delicious! White Porto was as good as ice wine or better, however it cost less than one fifth of decent quality ice wines. If you are in the area, give this restaurant a try. You won't regret it.

The Igreja e Mosteiro de Santa Clara is a significant monument in Vila do Conde, standing prominently on a hill next to the Ave river. Although its current structure dates back to the 18th century, there has been a monastery at this site since the 14th century. The building underwent refurbishment in the 18th century due to its deteriorating state and was almost abandoned by nuns in the mid-17th century.
Founded in 1318 by D. Afonso Sanches and D. Teresa Martins, the building we know is a construction of the eighteenth century, since, since the mid-seventeenth century, the building was on the brink of ruin and unable to nuns that lived there. However, given the serious problems that the country went through in eight hundred and with the extinction of monastic orders, the works were incomplete. Between 1929/1932, the General Directorate of National Buildings and Monuments carried out works of intervention and completion of the facades, in which it is one of the most emblematic monuments of Vila do Conde.

The Alfândega Régia de Vila do Conde, housed in a 15th-century Royal Customs House, offers an immersive journey into the maritime history of Portugal. The museum showcases the shipbuilding trade along the Ave Riverside from the Early Modern Age to the 20th century. Visitors can explore three main themes: the Portuguese Age of Discovery, goods processing at ports, and ship construction techniques.

The Régia Customs Building - Naval Construction Museum is located at Rua Cais da Alfândega, in the heart of Vila do Conde, where the Vila -Conde  Naval Shipyards once worked. In the fifteenth century, the heyday of maritime trade caused a growing movement in the ports of the kingdom, to which the port of Vila do Conde is no exception. Thus, in this context D. João II, by letter of February 27, 1487, created the royal customs of Vila do Conde. The building suffered, throughout the eighteenth century, successive extensions to conform the needs dictated by the intense commercial traffic that was then felt. Over the course of the twentieth century, the building went into a degradation process, having supported the services of the Tax Guard and warehouses affected to shipbuilding shipyards. In 2001, the result of the Vila-Condense candidacy “Rosa dos Ventos” to the Urban Pilot Project, was fully rehabilitated and converted into museum space. The permanent exhibition patent to the public, assumes three strands, which translate the function of the museum: Portuguese navigation, namely the one that originates and destination in Vila do Conde; the history of the royal customs and its functioning, officers and out -of -finished products; The history of shipbuilding, types of boats built in Vila do Conde and its constructive processes.

Chapel
Capela de Nossa Senhora do Socorro, erected in 1559 by Gaspar Manuel, a prominent pilot of Portuguese ships, is a beautiful chapel with hemispherical roofs inspired by the Far East. The chapel features stunning azulejos and an excellent balcony offering panoramic views of the city and the river mouth. Despite its small size, it boasts a wonderful tile panel. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, the chapel is currently closed to visitors.
(Translated by Google) Located on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Ave River, the Chapel of Our Lady of Socorro has a unique architecture, with a square floor plan covered by a vault. The interior decoration is noteworthy: covered in 18th century tiles depicting aspects of the life of the Virgin Mary; it has a rococo carved altarpiece with an image of Our Lady holding the child and an anchor. Small in size, it is unique due to its shape and roof, similar to that of oriental temples where its patron saint stayed. This small chapel has a circular and elliptical floor plan, formed by two sections. It was built between 1599 and 1603 on the initiative of Gaspar Manuel, a professed knight of the Order of Christ and chief pilot of the India, China and Japan routes, and by his wife Bárbara Ferreira de Almeida, who are buried there. From its viewpoint, you can enjoy a view that encompasses the entire right bank of the Ave River in the city up to its mouth. The festival of Our Lady of Socorro takes place on November 21st. The chapel is open every day from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and entry is free.

The Church of Santa Maria de Azurara holds historical significance as it dates back to the 16th century and features Manueline style architecture. The church was built next to a previous chapel and dedicated to Santa Maria the Nova. The image of the Virgin from the original chapel still exists in a visible niche at the main entrance portico. Although some maintenance work is needed, this church is worth visiting once it's open.

(Translated by Google) As in Vila do Conde, the Azurenses also took advantage of King Manuel I's visit to Santiago de Compostela in 1502 to tell him about their intention to build a parish church and ask for royal support. The new church was built next to the previous Chapel of Our Lady of the Presentation and was dedicated to Saint Mary the New (Our Lady of the Milk). The result was a large temple, set in a spacious courtyard facing the sea. The main façade is divided into three parts, revealing the internal structure, with the left side marked by a bell tower with double windows, with the openings divided into an axis consisting of a rounded portal with Manueline decoration and a rose window. The portal has a round arch, resting on a thin column on bases of logs and scottish beams, with a rounded archivolt, surrounded by a concave archivolt. Flanked vertically by columns with spiral beams, supported by a profusely decorated architrave. At the top of this portal, starting from both columns, there is a depressed arch, formed by overlapping logs, and in the centre there is a niche containing the sculpture of Our Lady of the Presentation, from the old church. The bell tower was built in the 17th century, and has a similar configuration to that of the Vila do Conde Parish Church, built in the same period. The top of the frontispiece is original, with a small semicircular pediment, partially covered with ceramic plates, flanked by two armillary spheres. The main chapel (1552) has a rectangular plan, with a ribbed cross vault, with the symbols of King Manuel I (armillary sphere and crosses of Christ) on the vaults' ends. It was designed and built by Gonçalo Lopes o Velho in 1552. The altarpiece is in gilded wood by Francisco Machado, with fine sculptures of St. Peter and St. Paul. The tiles from 1737 by António Vital Rifarto depict the washing of the feet and the Last Supper. The nave is made up of three naves covered with wooden beams and tiles, divided into 5 sections of round arches, supported by octagonal pillars with alternating faces of two widths. Two rope-shaped rings surround the columns, at half height and next to the capitals, decorated with plant motifs.

The seabass rice tasted wonderful, very fresh fish and no artificial flavors; and the grilled bream was so fresh that it seemed it had been fished out the ocean at that moment. We finished our meal with some delicious red berry cheesecake and some egg pudding. The restaurant was quite busy when we arrived and had to wait for a table for about 10min. Sandwich shop
If you're in the Povoa de Varzim and Villa do Conde area, make sure to stop by Subway, a casual counter-serve chain that specializes in build-your-own sandwiches and salads. This spot is perfect for health-conscious diners looking for fresh options. I recently grabbed a takeaway dinner here, opting for a Chicken Tikka and a vegetarian Patty on Italian bread with cheese—both were delicious and ready in no time! The prices are quite reasonable too.
This is the only outlet in and around Póvoa de Varzim and Villa do Conde. Visited for a take away for dinner. It was not busy. We ordered for a Chicken Tikka and vegetarian Patty half subway each in Italian bread with cheese. It was ready in no time and both were tasty. Definitely a case to repeat as reasonably priced. Only thing it is too far from our place.

Terrible experience. We used to be loyal customers, but something has changed over the past months, and not for the better. The food is now served in baskets, with ingredients pre-weighed and ready for sandwiches, which feels impersonal and unappetizing. The biggest issue, however, is the poor prioritization of in-store customers. At around 15:00, we were the only customers, yet the staff seemed more focused on fulfilling Uber and Glovo orders. One employee was sitting at a table eating while still in uniform and wearing a hair cover—this felt unprofessional and uncomfortable for everyone involved. Adding to the disappointment, the cleanliness was appalling. Every table inside was dirty, and the outside seating area was even worse. Trash, including a discarded cigarette box, was left on tables and under them. When an employee finally went to “clean,” they simply pushed the cigarette box to the ground with the other debris, leaving it there. To make matters worse, the ingredients no longer seem as fresh as they used to. My advice: don’t waste your time here. The standards have clearly dropped, and this place is no longer worth visiting.
