Sights & Landmarks
Historical landmark
Lacock Abbey, originally a nunnery dating back to the 13th century, has a rich history that includes being converted into a family home and later becoming the residence of William Henry Fox Talbot. The abbey is renowned as the birthplace of modern photography, where Fox Talbot captured the world's first photographic negative. Visitors are drawn to its unique features and picturesque setting in Lacock Village, with its historic streets and woodland grounds.
charming and atmospheric site rich in history and beauty. Lacock Abbey blends medieval architecture with peaceful gardens, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing visit. The cloisters are especially stunning and may look familiar to Harry Potter fans. A delightful stop for history lovers and photographers alike.

Great place to visit with the usual high standard from the National Trust. Cafe serves good quality food. Plenty of benches around the generous gardens and a children's playground. Very good museum all about the history of photography.
Ali B — Google review
Friendly and welcoming staff and a picturesque place to visit, perfect for a photoshoot (it was lovely to see so many families taking photos and enjoying themselves) and although I didn’t have time to explore the entire area, the abbey was beautiful. Will be back soon to discover the museum and enjoy the autumnal colours. Terrain is somewhat difficult to traverse as a wheelchair user in terms of suspension and gravel, but it is possible.
Blossom — Google review
Good car parking. £5.00 for non National Trust members. A beautiful Abbey with amazing grounds. There is a National Trust cafe before the property and inside the property. Enthusiastic National trust Staff with willingness to share their lnowldge. information. Part of the Harry Potter films.
Nicholas S — Google review
Lovely place to visit, stunning house & grounds. Beautiful village to walk around but we found the pub food prices quite pricey. 4 min drive up the road is Whitehall Garden centre with a lovely reasonable restaurant or tea room.
Wendi S — Google review
We visited Lacock without knowing anything of it's history, or indeed anything about it at all beforehand. Both the Abbey and the village are lovely. It's difficult though to get beyond the obvious and predictable 'Harry Potter' hype that the village attracts, and whilst it is is a very pretty village, the volume of cars did affect my view of the place. The Abbey though was a different kettle of fish. The place oozed centuries of history and the cloisters were beautiful. The house has seen many changes over the years; to some extent a victim of the vanity of owners through the centuries as tastes, fashions, and styles, have changed. And with each generation of change, so the house has been altered. The National Trust has obviously focussed on the work of William Henry Fox Talbot, photographic development pioneer and polymath who ived in the house for a period of time in the 19th century. But his life is just a small part of the history of the place which begins it's story in the 13th Century, 600 years before William Henry Talbot. Its a glorious place, well worth a visit with knowledgeable guides in the house and hospitable staff in the cosy café. We didn't have time to visit the gardens but this will definitely be on the itinerary for our next visit here.

Really Pretty. There is a fancy mansion and a very plain, historic abbey at one site . Great photography museum also The village is very cute
Lon W — Google review
Lacock abbey is special. As you enter this ancient homeand throughout, you meet volunteers able to answer any question as you walk through the many centuries of the building. Culminating with the birthplace of photography. All set in a picture perfect village with a lovely pub! Add in the photography exhibition and gardens this is a good gentle day out worth savering with the NT doing what it does so well. Recommended.

When you step into The Climbing Academy - "The Arc," you're in for an exhilarating experience tailored for climbers of all skill levels. Within moments, you can start bouldering, and adults have the convenience of supervising up to two children. This modern facility boasts two dedicated bouldering areas and a variety of climbing routes that cater to both beginners and seasoned climbers alike.
Recently did a ‘Straight to Lead’ course and also a family taster session to introduce my kids to top rope climbing and auto-belay. The centre was outstanding at both. Sarah who ran the family taster was flexible, easy going and very good with the children. There wasn’t a patronising sense of ‘we’re the experts’ which can feature in some climbing centres. Everyone was involved safely and everyone got some really exciting climbing in. Staff were very easy going about my youngest having his birthday cake in the cafe too and they were all very helpful. Good value, great staff and great climbing.
Jack C — Google review
Came for a 9 year old's birthday party, and it was perfect. Our instructor was friendly and filled the kids with confidence. We left the party area in a bit of a mess, sorry! Overall, we would definitely recommend.
Chris L — Google review
First time at The Arc and really enjoyed the experience. Also had tea and cake in the cafe. Highly recommended for a great day out.
Graham H — Google review
I use The Mothership regularly and this is another TCA branch. It's much smaller, not as many routes. There are two bouldering rooms, with the second one more for traversing practice. It has more of a community center vibe than a professional boulder centre vibe. Staff are super friendly, food was ok but not the best. No proper changing facilities, just two chairs opposite lockers.
Misiella S — Google review
Such a lovely climbing gym! I love the fact there's top rope, lead, and auto belay as it gives such a variety of what you can climb. The routes have gotten a lot harder since the last reset but that's not a problem but it would be nice to have a varied selection of climbs as many of the auto belay routes are 6a - 7a so not as friendly to newer or less confident climbing. The cafe is a welcome addition too and serves a good selection of food and snacks.
Lora ( — Google review
It’s so good to have a climbing place in Chippenham, no longer do we need to drive over to Swindon or Bristol to climb. The place it top notch, great design. The auto belay and boulder is great for starters and then the roped climbs great too. We’re doing a course which is brilliant. The only problem is the coffee and food looks really nice too ;)
Gareth M — Google review
The Arc is brand new and really well equipped. A lovely cafe with a large deck is stocked with lots of delicious options. The building is fully accessible, with a lift giving access to both levels easily. The staff were very friendly and approachable. The climbing areas are really well lit and ventilated, with 2 bouldering rooms, and 5 lines of auto-belays for when you want to climb and don't have a partner. Highly recommended!
Anthony Y — Google review
Short visit to the arc today to checkout the new park. Really nice to see a more natural park with lots of wood creatively used to make a nice space for the kids. Slides and buckets and shoots to put stones down kept them busy while me and mum had a coffee. Speaking of which, nice coffe and sausage bap, recommend dropping in!

Heritage museum
Chippenham Museum is an educational establishment located in a townhouse from the 18th century. Situated by the River Avon and easily reachable by both rail and road, it serves as a perfect hub for exploring rural Wiltshire, Bath, and the Cotswolds. Chippenham itself lies four miles south of the M4 motorway and is conveniently positioned on the mainline railway connecting London Paddington with the West Country.
Loved the museum. Every room has interactive toys and books for children. My son really enjoyed creating his own shield and painting it. Great easy activity for kids to get involved and adults to enjoy. There are a lot of beautiful paintings and installations, perfect place to learn about Chippenham history. Loved trains and factory work. Definitely recommend to visit and surely will be back soon.

A real asset and credit to our town. Wonderful to see our rich history displayed with such care and attention. I remember many of the exhibits from the original location of the museum. I feel old! :-)
Chris G — Google review
Interesting little museum. Free to enter. It has lots of things to do for the younger generation. This is particularly pleasing to me as it creates an interest in history which, hopefully, will continue as they grow. If you've got an hour or so to spare whilst in Chippenham pop your head round the door and explore.

Well worth a visit. A quaint and interesting museum. A lift and WC access. Good access for all. It's small and friendly. Activities for children. It has two levels. It's Free, you can buy a souvenir from the foyer. The staff are very kind and friendly. The museum is self explanatory and is full of items local to area and history. A great stop to understand local history and discover items of history. Some of the items are from further a field, some are very very old and curious.

Chippenham Museum is a real gem. It is full of items of local historical interest, and beautiful artwork of national significance. The displays are well laid out and engaging for all ages. With an ever evolving programme of exhibitions and events throughout the year is a great place for regular visits! The staff are always so friendly and happy to assist and they have a great schedule of events and activities that are family friendly too. Would highly recommend it to visitors!

The museum is the best ever musuem, it is stunning beautiful it is suitable for all ages. Volunteers are the museum are super friendly. The descriptions of the exhibit are well written and very engaging, it feels like learning history from one of the best teachers in the world. You can learn a lot about town's history and progress. Moreover musuem is free for all visitors.

Yelde Hall

Museum
The Yelde Hall, a medieval timber framed structure located in Chippenham's Market Place, was built between 1446 and 1458. This historic building is part of the town's rich heritage and holds significant importance. In 1747, Chippenham became embroiled in a parliamentary scandal involving bribery and corruption that resulted in an election petition and the downfall of Sir Robert Walpole's government.
Interesting building, which often has some art exhibitions. The ladies were friendly and informative. You can also go up to see the old council chamber, which is interesting, and it also contains an old horse-drawn fire engine. It's free to enter and definitely worth having a look if you see it's open

Takeout Restaurant
Boston Burger is a popular spot known for its excellent burgers and friendly staff. Customers have raved about the hot, cooked-to-order burgers that are reminiscent of Five Guys but even better in their opinion. The attention to detail, such as elastic/stretchy burger wrappers that keep the heat in, has not gone unnoticed. Additionally, the BBQ top loaded chips and kids' meals have received high praise for their quality and generous portions.
Was in Chippenham for business and was told by a colleague that Boston Burgers was a must try. They need to update the images of their burgers as I got a double cheese burger and the dirty fries with gherkins and beef, my eyes were way more hungry than I actually was. Burger was over all just yummy!! Good seasoning , bun and garnish was fresh, dirty fries were ooo so good.

Excellent local burger joint. Only stayed in Chippenham for a short time and came here for dinner on our last night. The burgers were awesome, thickshakes delicious, chips amazing and reasonable prices. The food was ready in less than 10 minutes and the staff were very friendly. Wish we discovered this place earlier on our stay as we would have definitely gone again.
Ron L — Google review
Unfortunately although the standard of the food is generally excellent, tonight they cooked up my order by only putting a small portion of chips when I ordered a large portion. May sound trivial but completely spoilt the meal we bought. More frustrating is that there is no telephone number on there social media or website presence to be able to complian or at least advise them of their error. Very frustrated experience with this company tonight.

Updated 24/09/23 Cannot be faulted, still! Great food, great staff, glad to have swung in after their well deserved holiday for some more brilliant food! Updated 16/01/24 - previous review remains the same - Quick service, plentiful portions, friendly staff. Enjoyed in the sun! Consistently the best burgers in Chippenham without fail!

Great little burger joint with a huge range of burgers, wraps and more. We had the blue cheese burger and bacon burger both of which were excellent. I've also tried the pea and mint falafel which was excellent. It's a tiny place so eating in isn't really an option though they have a table outside for nice weather.
Tony V — Google review
Love it! So delicious and filling with options for carnivores and vegans. I've had the burger before and finally had the falafel burrito. It was full of flavour. If you are in a hurry you can also order online to pick up. Will deffo be there again! Very reasonably priced for a local business in 2023.
Shelton F — Google review
Can only describe my first ever visit to Boston burger as poor Griddle burger Double Boston burger Chicken tenders Dirty fries Chicken tenders were so over cooked the dog turned his nose up at them dry with a cement like coating Both burgers were substantial in size however the brioche buns were soggy and everything just collapsed making it impossible to eat on the move The large dirty fries again Chils over cooked and crunchy and within 5 mins were stone cold Sorry guys, first visit won't turn Into a second if that what almost £30 worth of takeaway gets me. Shoestrings just down the road twice as tasty for half the price (please note we have no ties to either restaurant)
Tony — Google review
Fantastic that we finally have a good quality burger place in Chippenham! All the food was hot, Delicious and was cooked quickly! All ingredients tasted super fresh and wasn't like the normal rubbish you get from other places . Ice gem lettuce not that shredded rubbish, lovely fresh tomato, good sauce and well seasoned chicken made up my SFC - The beef burger we had was just as good quality, along with the chicken tenders which 9 for £6 were an absolute must have! All the staff were lovely and friendly, it felt like i had just popped round a mates for tea rather than walking in a burger bar! Overall Very Very Very impressed! Best of luck to the owner and keep up the good work! i will defiantly be back in again!

Nestled in the heart of history, the Best Western Plus Angel Hotel is a charming 17th-century coaching inn that offers a delightful retreat just moments away from Chippenham railway station and local attractions like Monkton Park and Lacock Abbey Museum. Guests can unwind in the serene enclosed garden or take a refreshing dip in the indoor pool. The hotel’s restaurant serves up delectable British cuisine, making it an ideal dining spot for both visitors and guests alike.
We had our wedding reception here, and from the moment we arrived until the very end, the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Over the course of two unforgettable days, everything was handled with such care and attention to detail—we are absolutely over the moon with how it all turned out! The food was amazing, the room was beautiful, and every single guest had nothing but high praise for the event. To top it all off, we've been invited back to celebrate our one-year anniversary, which means so much to us. We truly can't thank you enough for making our special day so memorable.
Alan H — Google review
We paid over £250 and stayed 1 night for a wedding. The hotel location is great, the reception and staff were friendly The room is spacious, but basic. It is an attic converted room with no air-con, but one fan in the room and windows were locked and can't be opened. The weather is very hot over 30°C. Our bed is so warm that I couldn't sleep well on it. How can a 4 star hotel have no air-con? It is worse than Premier Inn...
Yves W — Google review
Lovely clean hotel, well located with friendly, professional and accommodating staff. The only tiny points to make are that we stayed during the heatwave and although there was a strong fan in the room, air conditioning would be better. There also wasn't a fridge in the room but otherwise, everything was brilliant. We would stay again!

We stayed for 3 nights. Nice room in main building. Friendly staff and good breakfast offer. Easy parking and in the better end of town. Good location for Bath or Bristol park and ride and for general touring around the area. Many thanks

Despite friendly, welcoming and helpful staff : this hotel is a disappointment. It's very expensive if you compare it to the Purple hotel chain and the room we had was dated and grubby. Shower curtain was minging, yellowed and smelly. The net curtains had an old dried splodge of birdsh on them and the window frames were flaking paint from rotten sills. Furniture was in need of updating/repairing and there was a recliner chair missing a cushion which rendered it useless. The pool had an issue was heating so was pretty much an unheated pool. All in all, not worth the £214 it cost especially having come from a Purple Inn which was clean, fresh and good value. The food was fine, standard hotel grub, no issues. The staff work really hard to keep customers happy and they deserve a pay rise for this. Emma, in particular, was very helpful and we can't fault staff at all. Best Western, however, need to revamp this place and give it a good scrub. Shower curtains are less than a fiver and would make a massive difference. Wouldn't revisit 😐

Rooms were unclean 2 days without fresh towels bathroom was never mopped stains on the wall a big clump of hair under the dressing table not sure if it was animal or human. My wheel chair could not manoeuvre around the room our opinion was not worth what we were charged food was nice we had a meal the restaurant staff were excellent the young girl was worth double what she was getting paid bar staff friendly we stayed for 4 nights cost nearly £600 Chippenham great little town I lived here 46 years ago will visit again

I was in the new wing on the west side, very disappointed with the room - no ventilation, no openable windows; on a sunny summer day the rooms facing the car park are sweltering. The bar looks good, as does the courtyard. The leisure pool and gym are a good addition.

My family (10) and I enjoyed a very relaxed yet, professional atmosphere. The dinner was absolutely amazing, full of flavour, generous portions and a great variety of food to suit all tastes. We went here on a Saturday night and it was busy so it's worthwhile booking ahead. The food was unexpectedly great quality and generous portions. You pay a few pounds more than other pubs but I would definitely go again as the food was far better than most pubs we have gone to. We had pork belly, steak and ale pie and someone had a burger. The pork belly was a large piece with perfect crackerling and it sat in amazing gravy. The slice of pie was twice the size you normally see with a choice of mash, chips or fries. The pie was also sat in gravy and was amazing. And finally the burger and chips were very good.

A lovely place to eat. Great service very friendly and attentive staff. Food and drink was excellent. Price was a buy steep but no more than you would pay in other more up market tea shops on the high St. Would recommend to all.

It looks like a lovely relaxing quaint English tea room which is very good for a garden centre but was disappointed in their gluten free apple and plum cake slice. It had a strange texture and lacked flavour. My dad had a bakewell slice which he said was delicious. The drinks were nice. Hot chocolate with coconut milk was delicious costing £4. It's table service but paid at the counter. We have been here several times but this is the first time trying gluten free cake. I am happy to see they catered for different dietary requirements.

There was a notice saying aplogising stating they were understaffed so a full menu may not be available. But all the staff were clearly working extremely hard and were attentive. You wouldn't have known. Very busy and there was a small wait to be seated. You could have a light bite or lunch. We opted for lunch. Our meals were very reasonably priced and perfectly acceptable. However, sadly my friend didn't enjoy her main at all (pesto, quinoa salad) and she isn't a fussy eater at all and felt something tasted odd. Normally I would have mentioned it but the staff were working so hard and were so kind, I didn't have the heart. I do feel that £2.30 for a small bottle of water is unreasonable; which my friend had. I opted for tap water.

Very nice experience. Welcoming and friendly staff. Food was very well presented and, more importantly, very tasty. I had the belly pork, and I have to say it was the best belly pork I'd had in 10 years. There was an issue with the till on the day we visited, which could have caused massive inconvenience, but it was dealt with very professionally by all members of the team. It's definitely worth eating there.
