Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore is a stunning monastery complex founded in the 1300s, nestled on a remote hillside in Val d'Orcia. The red-brick buildings house an array of frescoes and works of art, offering visitors a glimpse into history while enjoying the natural surroundings. The abbey church, woodland paths, chapels, cloister adorned with well-preserved Renaissance frescoes, monastic library and refectory are all part of the experience.
Very nice abbey. Well kept both the place and local wisdoms for making wine, olive oil and herbal medicine.

We booked 2 nights here through Monastery Stays. We chose this because it was one of the few monasteries between Siena and Val d'Orcia (both less than an hour). It is quite remote up in the mountains which you may find either fun or scary or both if you're driving. It is a very beautiful setting though. The room itself is nice with what seems like antique furniture (desk and closet), and an attached bathroom. The shower is a bit cramped, but we managed. There is no elevator so you have to go up a flight of stairs. One issue some might encounter is that the church bells go off at 6am and go continuously for nearly 5 minutes. It's very loud because it's right across the room. It was fine for us because we needed to be up early anyway. Breakfast is not served though they have vending machines on-site. Credit card payment was accepted here. There are specific check-in times though you can depart anytime by leaving your keys at the room door. English was a struggle but the brother in-charge was patient. A stay here gets you free entry at other areas at the monastery, though a big regret is that we didn't have time to explore. Hopefully we get another opportunity someday. The location is quite remote so you would have to go to another town if ever you need a supermarket or other services. There is a restaurant in the complex though. Arrival and parking note: you don't need to park at the pay parking facility. You can drive straight down the brick road to the lot dedicated to overnight guests.

Certainly worth a trip if you're in Siena or the surrounding area. The fresco paintings are beautiful and very elaborate. You can easily spend at least 3h if you want to visit the buildings and the gardens. Unfortunately, at the moment they don't have guided tours but only audio guides.
Raimondo R — Google review
The place is beautiful and the monks are friendly/polite! We even saw a monk that looked like San Benedetto 😅 the exhibition and library were beautiful, but I'd skip the dessert at the bar near the draw bridge. The newer path on the right from the entrance is easier and a more direct way to the chapel and museum. I'd recommend to use insect repellent if you go around the grounds, which you should! The shop is nice and has things for all budget. I got a pretty wooden rosary in a wooden box.
Si N — Google review
Wow Fantastic! Highly recommend the visit, you will need at least 2 hours for a visit. Very well organized, gorgeous setting and scenery. Easy parking, wine tasting and monk made product for sale. And lets not forget the beautiful architecture and great history.
Kate G — Google review
Nice monastery with a museum and wine tasting options. They have a special 23 herbs post meal digestive drink made from over centuries old recipe. They shut for lunch hours around 12.30/2 so plan accordingly. If you want to do a tour give yourself at least 1 hour before closing time as otherwise they don’t offer.
Arun K — Google review
The entrance is 4€ per person but there isn’t much to visit inside. In 30 minutes you can see everything. The impressive part can be seen from the outside

What a peaceful and magical place! I love the library and all the information I could read there. This was totally worth the ride from our agriturismo. But also the amazing wine cellar. The guy working there was very helpful and friendly. We walked around and bought some nice wine.

Agriturismo Baccoleno

Farmstay
Agriturismo Baccoleno is a charming traditional farm located in the picturesque Crete Senesi region of Tuscany, between Asciano and San Giovanni d'Asso. While not directly in the Val d'Orcia, it's just a short distance away, making it a popular base for exploring the surrounding area. The renovated farmhouse offers elegant accommodations immersed in the stunning Tuscan landscape near Siena. Guests can expect a unique stay surrounded by history and natural beauty.
We stayed at this beautiful accommodation right in the heart of Tuscany, and it turned out to be the perfect base for exploring the region. It’s within an hour’s drive from Siena, Pienza, and Val d’Orcia area, making it super convenient for day trips. The property is surrounded by stunning cypresses, a truly picturesque setting. We spent four nights there, and although our schedule was quite packed, we were lucky to catch a magical sunrise with morning mist and a breathtaking sunset on the day of our friend’s proposal. It was such a special and unforgettable moment, made even better by the scenery. If I visit Tuscany again, I would definitely choose to stay here once more. The only small downside is that the walls are a bit thin, so it’s best to keep quiet at night to avoid disturbing others. But overall, it was a truly pleasant and memorable stay.
Hang — Google review
Yes, of course, Baccoleno is instagram's dream, Tuscany in a photo. Everything here is simply beautiful and you can enjoy the sunset on your very own private patio. However, the rooms have very poor soundproofing and are arranged in a weird way so your neighbors floor connects into your wall. We had the misfortune of having some people that decided to re-arrange the very heavy furniture in the middle of the night. Honestly, sheetrock and mineral wool aren't that expensive to give your guests a good night sleep. Also, in true italian fashion, you can order breakfast and the baked goods are cheap as nails, like 30c for a croissant, but the fact they charge you 30c on a while staying in a 200eur per night room is silly. Same with not including coffee pods in the room while having a pod machine. Just increase the price by 5eur and you can still have people preorder both the food and coffee to avoid waste. The cypress trees and rolling hills of wheat will make you forgive anything though.
Tin C — Google review
Nice fence and gate. People travel thousands of km to get professional photography done but you greet them with barb wire fences. Italians are nice people, very welcoming.
Marius D — Google review
You have to book the hotel if you can find a room. The view going in and out of the hotel is insanely beautiful, and because it's gated property, you have to be a hotel guest to go through the gate. And it's just one of the those experiences that you will never forget. I also want to say a special thanks to the host Francesca. I left my coat on the couch after check out and I was leaving Italy the very same day. Francesca was so nice to help me ship it back. And she was so calm and easy about it. So, thank you Francesca!

Perfect place for rest , relax. We were there with our 3 years old son, garden is safe and prepare also for kids. Swimming pool with warm water is ready to use before season start. Views are amazing, this is perfect place to stay in Tuscany. Owner helps with daily things, she help us to find doctor for our son. Owners has got really magical place with charming atmosphere.

Perfection has a name and it is Agriturismo Baccoleno. From the friendly owner, the quiet surroundings (sounds of crickets in the evening), the surprisingly cool, well equipped apartment, the pool and the views, oh, the views.... This simply is perfect. One suggestion to make.... Install a slow charger for guests.... More and more are driving ev's. 😉

If you want to explore, marvel and live the tuscanian feeling, this is the place to go. Our apartment had everything we needed. Everything was very clean. The place is just like int he tuscanian scenes in movies. We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the wonderful service and recommendations of Francesca. We were welcomed kindly, friendly and warmly. The only thing we regreted, was that our stay was only 4 days. But we will visit this marvelous place in future for sure.

Art museum
Nestled in the charming village of Asciano, the Museo Cassioli Pittura senese dell'Ottocento is a delightful tribute to local artistry, showcasing the works of Amos Cassioli and his son Giuseppe. This small yet captivating museum features an impressive collection that also includes pieces from other notable 19th-century Sienese painters.
(Translated by Google) Very interesting museum located in the historic center of the small village of Asciano, center of the Crete Senesi, a truly Tuscan landscape famous throughout the world. The Museum is on two floors, located in a historic building of fine workmanship. The architecture and museum concept are very current and enjoyable. The works on display are a historical collection donated to the municipality with works from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries from the Sienese area. Some truly very valuable pieces, which show how the Sienese environment was receptive to the innovations introduced by the greatest artists of the period, not only Tuscan. A good stop to visit in combination with the Palazzo Corboli Art Museum, whose 7 euro cumulative ticket includes both structures. Absolutely worth seeing! Nestled next to the Civic Archaeological and Sacred Art Museum, AmorDivino is a culinary gem that specializes in the iconic Florentine steak, prepared over an open flame right in the heart of the dining area. This upscale restaurant offers a refined Italian dining experience with exceptional service that leaves guests feeling pampered. The ambiance is particularly inviting during autumn and winter when it tends to be less crowded, allowing for a more intimate meal.
We had the pleasure of dining at this Italian gem in Tuscany, recommended by our lovely host — and it absolutely lived up to the hype. I had the best T-bone steak of my life: incredibly tender, perfectly cooked, and bursting with freshness. Every bite was unforgettable. The truffle pasta was another highlight — rich, creamy, and full of flavor without being overwhelming. The sauce was beautifully balanced and truly showcased the magic of Italian cuisine. The service was warm and attentive, making the whole experience even more special. We went to celebrate a friend’s engagement, and it turned out to be the perfect place for such a joyful evening. Great food, great company, and a setting to remember. Highly recommend!

We ate here last summer on their terrace and were satisfied. This time we had dinner inside, reservation is recommended. Warm welcome, attentive waiters and very good local food. We had wine by the glass, liver, lam and a tartare as a starter. Everything well prepared and tasty. We will certainly come again.

We arrived as a pax of 4+1 and would normally recommend to book in advance as the restaurant filled up very quickly! Tried a couple of their dishes including the burrata with salami and lettuce, pecorino fondue which didn’t come with enough bread (we added truffle to this which was €4), the sausage pasta and duck as our mains and the fried donuts and deconstructed tiramisu for dessert. A tiramisu needs the lady fingers to soak so a deconstructed one didn’t really make sense. The restaurant itself was a vibe with one of their specials is the Tuscan steak which was cut and cooked by the fire for everyone to watch - super cool. Also kid friendly with a high chair available. This was slightly pricier than other places but worth trying if you’re stoping by Volterra.

The back garden is what made us decide to eat there and we are glad we did. So much room, yet not crowded. Very busy night, so service was a little slow, but that's totally understandable. Servers were completely professional, friendly, and helpful! We had the pici fatti a mano and the spaghetti dello chef and both were excellent.

Here is a little gem to visit, in what seems like a deserted little town, Asciano. We walked many times and noticed La Mencia empty, either it's too early for us Australians or the place doesn't have a good reputation. We were wrong on both accounts, walking through the empty restaurant opened up to a beautiful outdoor dining with lots of guests. Here is where you find where the true experience of La Mencia starts. With its umbrellas, hedging and creepers give it an awesome atmosphere while enjoying your meal. Great food and wine brought a smile to our faces. Tip: Look further in, you'll be surprised by what you might find.

The woman behind the counter was kind, helpful and made sure we had an excellent experience. Looking at other reviews I think people may have this place confused with somewhere else. Highly recommend! Also the service was prompt and courteous.

We stopped here for a quick lunch and were very positively surprised by variety of pizzas they offer. All freshly baked on a yummy dough and served quickly. They also have very good local desserts. Everything priced very reasonably; we paid 16-17 € for 3 different types of pizza slices, drinks, coffee and dessert. Staff is very friendly. You can sit both inside and outside

Such a wonderful place . Directly from UK we stoped for a lunch and we’ve had a delicious pasta with typical ragù souse. The staff is polite and friendly. The right recommendation to enjoy a fast and good meal with very affordable price. Quality price the best.

Got a big black coffee (instead of an espresso which is kind of funny in Italy) and a different kind of pizza (out of three possible options), but the experience overall was quite nice. The plates were a little dirty, which is okay since it looked like they got the necessary sanitary treatment anyway, but still. Later on found out that the menu does actually exists but just for the other table, and the positions were different for some reason. The major point is that it was an Easter Sunday, so all the things above might be explained by that fact. The people are actually nice! The personnel speaks English and sometimes French (and Italian obviously), there were no problems with paying and communication in general, and the confusions might have been caused by the fact that the workers were a little busy with other things at the time. (Which, again, might be explained by them working on a holiday)

I am not sure how this place got a 4 stars rating. Pasta was not fresh or good. We had to change many dishes because they were not available. Make sure you don't order pici ragu because it is the worst you could try. One of the waitresses was also very rude and started shouting when i asked for the availibility of the tuna salad.

Italian restaurant
Ristorante La Torre is a remarkable Italian eatery where patrons can savor the most incredible, handcrafted pasta imaginable. The delectable dishes are so irresistible that many customers find themselves indulging in second helpings. For those with a fondness for felines, this establishment even boasts the presence of an adorable and affectionate cat. Families can enjoy delightful meals together at this restaurant, which offers authentic regional cuisine recommended by the staff.
Recommended by our hosts at a nearby agrotourismo, this restaurant was one of the stars of a delicious week in Tuscany and Umbria. Outstanding service by the grandson of the owners --we were warmly welcomed despite not having a reservation, and each course was fantastic. We loved having the wines produced at the Abbey as part of the meal. Thank you!

I hate it when one of my orders gets forgotten and then I have to ask the waiter and they seem annoyed by it. I mean this was not my fault… And then I have to eat after my friends already ate and drag the whole thing. The food was good though but my friends were sold a duck ragout which tasted like normal spaghetti bolognese and costed 23€ each. The Ambience with the castle is absolutely astonishing but I cannot recommend the restaurant that much. sorry

Perfect stop for a break and lunch while visiting famous Tuscan fields. We visited the monatery, wine cellars (with tasting!), and lunched in La Torre. The food was exquisite! Top class!

Were we hungry, or was the food delicious? Our party decided it was both. A simple menu where you can’t go wrong, Ristorante La Torre was a delightful, laid back experience complete with resident cat, Gigi. We arrived late, at 2:30p, halfway filled with worry that we’d be turned away for arriving too late. But we arrived to a full dining area and more people waiting to be seated. By American standards it was slow service. However as Americans on vacation the delays transformed into charm and we interpreted it as Italy’s way of showing us that time can also be savored, not just devoured. The pasta was straightforward and flavorful. They don’t need prevention to make their pasta sing. The desserts were perfect for lunch - a kiss of sweetness without a sugar crash. Thank god because a sugar crash at the monastery would’ve been a real snooze fest. Try the monk wine (our term, not theirs). Quite good and the thought of monks holding up their frocks while stomping grapes will make you giggle after a glass or two.

We stopped there for some refreshments. One of the worst experiences in Tuscany. The owner of this business is rude, not customer friendly and shouts at their staff in front of the customers. While paying the bill he wanted to charge us for the cakes which we have ordered but not received. When we said we did not get the cakes ( not the biggest deal we just did not want to get charged for it), his initial reaction was a disbelief like I wanted to steal two pieces of cake from him. His expressions were showing I am the intruder and liar. Then without saying anything he left just to bring the waiter and shout at him in front of us. This men should never be the owner/manager of a restaurant. Not mentioning that the restaurant is located in front of Abrazzia….
