Very nice and modern museum with lots of activities. It tells the history of the lands of modern Belgium from prehistoric times to Roman times and early Christianity.

We bought the tickets online in advance and would recommend doing so. We did appreciate the low entrance fee of 8 euros. The museum is one of the very best I have seen in many years. The building is modern and well designed. There are multiple toilets and free lockers (you do need a 1 euro coin to use them). We liked the free audioguide (in multiple languages); the many videos and the way the artifacts were organized and explained a lot. There is a way to do a fast tour if you just want the highlights; there’s the adult tour; and there’s the tour for kids. All well recognizable. One can also get a group tour with a guide. We really appreciated the lightweight portable chairs that we took with us through the entire museum. They made the visit a lot more comfortable. We expected to be in there for 90 minutes but did end up taking 3 hours and ½ and could have easily been in there longer if we hadn’t gotten hungry. The museum focuses on the history from the prehistory into the beginning of the Middle Ages, often with an extra focus on the local history. The museum really exceeded all of our expectations!

The visit to the Galo Romanian Museum was good. The building itself is awesome, and the staff are friendly and helpful. The permanent exhibits are very interesting, but the museum has only two halls just two halls and that's it. It still deserves five stars for the building and the permanent collection, but the temporary exhibition is disappointing. For an extra €5, I expected much more. I would recommend visiting for the permanent exhibit, but not for the temporary exhibition.

There was a very nice temporary exhibition in cooperation with the British Museum. It has a shop and cafeteria (the latter closed at the moment). The museum is housed in an impressive modern building right in the middle of beautiful Tongeren. Definitely worth a visit.

The current exhibition is a real must see with exceptional items from the vast collection of the British Museum. But the way the artefacts are presented is in itself worthwhile of your visit. A perfect audioguide and interactive panels for children makes you forget time during your flash back into ancient roman time. Top.

Beautiful, holy and unbelievable are just a few words to try to describe this work of art. Every time we come to Tongeren we are amazed with the church. Words don’t do this amazing structure justice. You can feel the presence of God here. We sat and enjoyed the time we were in side the church. How large but peaceful it makes you feel. It’s extremely clean and the people are friendly. We will be back and thank you for the wonderful experience.

It's stunning, you can see it from far. Visit Tongeren on a Sunday morning to walk the largest antiques market in Belgium, look around the oldest city of the country and its Roman wall and museum. There's also a Benienhof that survived a big fired that once consumed most of the city. There's much to see and learn and this beautiful town.

Easily one of the nicest museums I have ever visited. It is very well organised and presented. Very interesting for both adults and kids. The audio guide for kids is incredible. My 6 year old managed the Tower, archeological site and The Treasury with no problem!

Highly recommend, this is a must-see for international visitors to the area. Our group is from Canada, and all of us were amazed by how incredibly well done the exhibits are --- on par if not exceeding comparable sites in Aachen and Cologne. There are two parts to the Teseum, each takes about an hour. In the basement, a beautiful tour of the archeological site has been built, with outstanding multimedia displays. Upstairs, the treasury and cloister is equally interesting.

Lovely small town, pleasant to walk and shop, galo roman museum is worth a visit too. Tourist walks available for kids and adults, easy to follow information and interesting reads on the way. You can visit the only remaining tower for free with a code from the tourist office. With covid, time slot should be booked in advance. The brasseries are closed now but you can find coffee shops and some delicious donuts :-).

I absolutely love this place! Inside and out the site is beautiful. The interior is decorated very tastefully with fun and quirky details, and is animated by the happy chatter of other patrons and a playlist that always slaps. The terrace is right along a pond with a calming fountain. Ducks wander up to say hello and fish jump in and out of the water. The food is delicious and reasonably priced with a large selection of beers. The staff is kind and always do their best to find you a seat (even when it’s the last empty stool in the bar!) I highly recommend and will continue to visit Retro Velinx!
