The Gallo-Roman Museum in Tongeren is a must-visit attraction, showcasing the region's history from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages. The museum boasts an impressive collection of 18,000 artifacts, including pottery, glassware, sculptures, and bronze items from the Roman and Merovingian periods. Housed in a modern building since 2011, this award-winning museum offers a comprehensive look at Tongeren's ancient past.
Nice museum. You can buy a City Pass for better price to visit the museum and the church' s museum next to that. Great experience for me
Nha T — Google review
Very nice and modern museum with lots of activities. It tells the history of the lands of modern Belgium from prehistoric times to Roman times and early Christianity.
Dasha P — Google review
We bought the tickets online in advance and would recommend doing so. We did appreciate the low entrance fee of 8 euros. The museum is one of the very best I have seen in many years. The building is modern and well designed. There are multiple toilets and free lockers (you do need a 1 euro coin to use them). We liked the free audioguide (in multiple languages); the many videos and the way the artifacts were organized and explained a lot. There is a way to do a fast tour if you just want the highlights; there’s the adult tour; and there’s the tour for kids. All well recognizable. One can also get a group tour with a guide. We really appreciated the lightweight portable chairs that we took with us through the entire museum. They made the visit a lot more comfortable. We expected to be in there for 90 minutes but did end up taking 3 hours and ½ and could have easily been in there longer if we hadn’t gotten hungry. The museum focuses on the history from the prehistory into the beginning of the Middle Ages, often with an extra focus on the local history. The museum really exceeded all of our expectations!
Chers E — Google review
The visit to the Galo Romanian Museum was good. The building itself is awesome, and the staff are friendly and helpful. The permanent exhibits are very interesting, but the museum has only two halls just two halls and that's it. It still deserves five stars for the building and the permanent collection, but the temporary exhibition is disappointing. For an extra €5, I expected much more. I would recommend visiting for the permanent exhibit, but not for the temporary exhibition.
Stan V — Google review
Really great museum, the audioguide really helps because all things are mainly in dutch or in french. It is really interactive so it would be great for kids. It takes around 3 hours to visit everything in the museum. The shop is really cheap compared to other museums. The entry is 8 for adults, 1 for kids, and 5 for students.
Silvia S — Google review
A smooth museum experience with thousands of artifacts on display from prehistoric to ancient times. Displays are in Dutch but audio guides were available in multiple languages. There were even free postcards given away at the end of the exhibit.
Nancy K — Google review
One of the friendliest museums in Belgium. The Museum of Gallo-Roman History sketches the story of mankind from prehistoric times to the fifth century AD in a beautiful permanent collection. The emphasis is on society in and around Belgium during the Roman Empire and the evolution of society under Roman rule. The collection is interesting and excellently illustrated. A quadrilingual audioguide (Dutch, English, French, German) guides you around and provides a lot of information. The plaques are also very informative and accessible. It’s a great place to visit with children as well, offering special kid’s audio explanation and games throughout the museum. It is a very impressive visitor experience. There was a very nice temporary exhibition in cooperation with the British Museum. It has a shop and cafeteria (the latter closed at the moment). The museum is housed in an impressive modern building right in the middle of beautiful Tongeren. Definitely worth a visit.
Siegfried B — Google review
The current exhibition is a real must see with exceptional items from the vast collection of the British Museum. But the way the artefacts are presented is in itself worthwhile of your visit. A perfect audioguide and interactive panels for children makes you forget time during your flash back into ancient roman time. Top.

The Basilica of Our Beloved Lady is a remarkable monument in Tongeren, with a majestic 64-meter-tall tower and a history dating back to 1240. It took 300 years to complete this superb building, which houses the treasured statue of Lady of Tongeren from 1475. Visitors can explore the inside of the basilica and stroll through the quiet walkways behind it where a small monastery is located.
It's stunning, you can see it from far. Visit Tongeren on a Sunday morning to walk the largest antiques market in Belgium, look around the oldest city of the country and its Roman wall and museum. There's also a Benienhof that survived a big fired that once consumed most of the city. There's much to see and learn and this beautiful town.
Ilyas K — Google review
Beautiful, holy and unbelievable are just a few words to try to describe this work of art. Every time we come to Tongeren we are amazed with the church. Words don’t do this amazing structure justice. You can feel the presence of God here. We sat and enjoyed the time we were in side the church. How large but peaceful it makes you feel. It’s extremely clean and the people are friendly. We will be back and thank you for the wonderful experience.

As you approach the city of Tongres the tower of the basilica seems to be the end stage of many roads. Couldn't visit the interior unfortunately.

Tongeren is a small town we stayed over night for the antique market and wee lucky to stumble into the basilica during a organ concert. The church is beautiful. I would love to go back for the crowning of Mary they do once every 7 years- including this heart 2016

Teseum, located at the Basilica of Lady in Tongeren, Belgium, is a unique attraction that offers a blend of rich Catholic art and archaeological discoveries. The museum houses one of the most extensive collections of Catholic art in Belgium and features an underground archaeological site that delves into Tongeren's origins, showcasing ancient building foundations and remnants of seven previous churches.
Teseum in Tongeren is a hidden gem for history and art lovers. Located next to the Basilica of Our Lady, it showcases an impressive collection of religious artifacts, including ancient relics, stunning textiles, and medieval treasures. The exhibits are well-organized and offer a great mix of history and interactive displays, making it both educational and engaging. The atmosphere is peaceful, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Easily one of the nicest museums I have ever visited. It is very well organised and presented. Very interesting for both adults and kids. The audio guide for kids is incredible. My 6 year old managed the Tower, archeological site and The Treasury with no problem!
Irina L — Google review
One of the best museums in Belgium! There are two parts to the Teseum -- first is the underground archeological site and the second has religious art treasures. Both wings are extremely well curated. The audio guide is seamless. Do not miss this when visiting Tongeren. It is well worth the drive.
Nancy K — Google review
One of my favourite museums! The interactive experience for the kids is a blast! Totally worth it for the complete family!
Ana P — Google review
A fascinating and family-friendly experience! We visited the Teseum in Tongeren and explored the archaeological site, the impressive treasury, and climbed the tower – and we were truly amazed! The exhibitions are beautifully curated, highly informative, and yet never overwhelming. The archaeological section offers a captivating journey through time, showing the deep Roman roots of Tongeren with interactive elements and clever storytelling that kept even our child engaged from start to finish. The treasury is equally impressive, showcasing stunning religious artifacts in a respectful and modern display. The climb up the tower was a highlight – the view over the historic town is absolutely worth it. The museum manages to strike a perfect balance between education and entertainment, making it suitable for both adults and kids. We had a fantastic time as a family and would highly recommend the Teseum to anyone visiting the region. It brings history to life in a way that’s both meaningful and fun!
René L — Google review

Sergei G — Google review
Highly recommend, this is a must-see for international visitors to the area. Our group is from Canada, and all of us were amazed by how incredibly well done the exhibits are --- on par if not exceeding comparable sites in Aachen and Cologne. There are two parts to the Teseum, each takes about an hour. In the basement, a beautiful tour of the archeological site has been built, with outstanding multimedia displays. Upstairs, the treasury and cloister is equally interesting.

(Translated by Google) St. Catherine's Church, also known as the Beguinage Church or Paterskerk, is a former church building in the Belgian city of Tongeren in the province of Limburg. The church is surrounded by Brouwersstraat, Sint-Catharinastraat, and Sint-Rosastraat. St. Catherine's Church occupies the center of the Tongeren beguinage. The basilica consists of a three-aisled nave with six bays, a one-bay choir under a slate gable roof, and a pear spire at the crossing. There are sacristies on both the north and south sides of the church. The nave and choir are the oldest parts of the church; these early Gothic sections are built of flint. The aisles, made of marlstone and with bluestone overlays, were added in the mid-14th century. Expansions and renovations were carried out in the 15th, 18th, and 20th centuries.

The Museum Beghina can be described as an exhibition showcasing historical artifacts and items related to the concept of a beguinage and the lives of beguins. It is unsure whether it can be classified as a traditional museum, as it primarily consists of glass showcases displaying old objects. The layout makes it challenging for visitors to truly appreciate the exhibits due to limited surface area.

An interesting detail: the Beguine who lived here had a maid. Scattered throughout the house are a salt chair, a collection of cartoons, and statues—not always correctly identified, but that's not too distracting. Note: your museum pass isn't valid here, and you have to climb and descend stairs to access the museum. A visit of about 60 minutes is well worth it for visitors with any interest in history. Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of De Kevie, a stunning nature reserve situated along the Jeker River. This picturesque area features meandering river paths, marshlands, reedbeds, and reclaimed pastoral landscapes teeming with diverse birdlife and wildlife. Explore the four well-defined walking and cycling trails that lead you through coppiced willows, poplars, and charming hedgerows.
Best place to go for a walk/jog in the area, with some trails good for biking. It is composed of several dirt trails trough the forest (sometimes with a wooden bridge) for walkers/runners and a bigger stone trail next to the fields for bikers and walkers/runners. I had a good time finding all the trails there is one that is pretty well hidden. It connects a big portion of villages in east-tongeren and even Walonia. You can find all kinds of creatures here: birds, frogs, small rodents, beavers, horses and hogs. Be aware of the hogs as they can be dangerous. There are some benches aswell as some tables for a picnic.

Easily accessible paths, not suitable for strollers or wheelchair users due to the boardwalks. The first part, about 4 km, starts beautifully, but then you have to follow a straight road for about 2 km and we found that less successful. Maybe figure out how this boring piece could be done differently? Then you come to a few terraces on a square where you can also have some fries and then do the second half of the walk. And it is really worth it until you get back to the Kevie parking lot.

The Stadhuis van Tongeren, a stunning example of Rococo architecture, was constructed in the 18th century after a devastating fire in 1677 destroyed much of the city, including its original town hall. Built on the site of the former cloth hall, this beautifully renovated building has become an integral part of local ceremonies and events. Visitors can start their exploration at the vibrant Grote Markt nearby, which has been a lively gathering place since ancient Roman times.

Embark on an unforgettable adventure with the "Terroir-Wijnsafari Haspengouw," a unique experience that combines the beauty of nature with the rich flavors of local wines. Nestled in Belgium's stunning Haspengouw region, known for its lush orchards and vineyards, this safari invites you to explore picturesque landscapes while indulging in exquisite wine tastings.
Great experience, for a reasonable price you have an activity that takes you from 14h-18h. Ideal if you are planning a whole day like a henn's party or a family day out. It is really about tasting the wines, so you don't have to worry about having too much wine to be able to drive afterwards (of course you can always choose to drink a bit more :-). Good explanations, fun to do as you drive the carts yourself, you see the entire countryside too. Learnt a lot about the good wines we have!

(Translated by Google) We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Terroir Wijnsafari! The accommodations were very cozy and perfect for our family. Jo Fabre created a welcoming atmosphere and was very knowledgeable. The safari itself was a true experience: you drive to the wineries yourself in a golf cart, where you spend about four hours exploring the beautiful Haspengouw region. Along the way, we heard interesting stories about the four Belgian wineries who produce wine in this region – incredibly captivating and yet very relaxing. We opted for the winery tour package, but other options are also available, such as those using a Vespa or other vehicles. In short: highly recommended for anyone who loves nature, conviviality, and a touch of wine culture! 🍷✨

Room Escape Games
Break free Tongeren offers an exciting and challenging escape room experience for groups of all ages. The Beach room features surprising riddles that require logical thinking to solve, making it a great choice for families or mixed groups. The Live or Die room is praised for its original puzzles and thrilling atmosphere, with intricate electrical and automatic mechanisms adding to the excitement. Both rooms are beautifully decorated with engaging storylines, providing a perfect blend of hands-on activities and mental challenges.
Nothing I write is accepted by Google's AI. So I'm trying this method. Just wanted to say everything is as expected at Break Free Tongeren.

(Translated by Google) We did The Beach with 6 (ages 11 to 47). It wasn't easy to escape, but we succeeded thanks to the hints! Nicely set up room with surprising riddles and you have to think logically. The house where the 2 rooms are is being completely renovated. This way it looks like it's not open. Recommended for the whole family or mixed group of different ages.

(Translated by Google) Wow, a really great escape room (live or die)! One of the best I've ever done. Ingeniously put together with many electrical/automatic mechanisms (so more than the classic 'find the padlock code'). Also really exciting because sometimes you make mistakes. Fantastic experience that I can highly recommend to everyone! Thanks to the few hints we received via live TV, we got out of the escape room just in time, and we were left with a very satisfied feeling.

(Translated by Google) Very fun and original puzzles. We played both rooms (the beach and live or die), and thought they were both great. Beautiful decoration and nice story. The puzzles are a good variation between doing and thinking. Definitely worth going to Tongeren! (Translated by Google) It was a sunny day and that's why I sat on the terrace. When I looked at the menu, I noticed that you can get trippel Karmeliet on tap here for €4.40. I grabbed that opportunity with both lips. After half an hour I got hungry and ate meatballs in tomato sauce with fries. Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. The portion was just right for a lunch and was simple but tasty. No 'Haute Cuisine', but good everyday food. I really enjoyed my lunch at a second Karmeliet. The prices are good for the quality and quantity delivered. Highly recommended!

I speak FR and I do my best in NL, but hey I'm not perfect at all. But here it is not a problem, the linguistic problems specific to Belgium do not exist. This place is a real pleasure to relax... To try. April 2025: New season, New menu and unfortunately new increased prices. These are especially the dishes whose price has increased by 3 to 4 euros... The quality, quantity, price ratio is now normal to expensive like elsewhere... Too bad... A essayer. Dommage...
