Praia de Monte Gordo

Beach
Praia de Monte Gordo is a beachside resort located just a short drive away from Vila Real de Santo Antonio, making it the closest beach resort in the Algarve to Spain. The expansive white sand beach spans about 1 mile and features straw parasols that create a tropical ambiance. During summer, lifeguards ensure safety along this Blue Flag-awarded beach.
This beach is expansive and beautifully maintained, featuring a well-designed promenade that stretches its entire length. Below the promenade, you’ll find numerous areas with sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent at 16€ per day. Along the promenade, there are several well-established restaurants offering excellent food.

Good beach. We arrived at lunch time and there was a lot of space.
Ana S — Google review
Oh my god…too many people… not pleasant. And it’s not pretty here, there are lots of algae on the beach and the amount of people you have to dodge. It’s CRAZY!! Maybe if you come in off season on a week day then it might be okay. But definitely not August on the weekend. But if you walk pass the area with all the people in front of all the condos then it’s nice and calm.
Kas M — Google review
This a great long and wide beach, sandy and clean. It's hard to find a pebble here so it's perfect for barefoot walking. There are several boardwalks leading to this place from the town and there's at least 200- hundred meter long boardwalk along the beach. The beach is wheelchair accessible. On the top of that there's several very nice restaurants serving fresh seafood and a few beach chair/sun loungers/umbrellas services available. You can walk along the beach for miles and enjoy some fantastic views of the Atlantic ocean. Monte Gordo beach is about a 2-3 mile walk from the river that separates Portugal from Spain. The only con is the lack of the public bathrooms in the area. And no soft serve ice cream.
Katjabluetopaz — Google review
One of the nicest beaches we have stopped at so far in Spain or Portugal Clean, big beach. Fine light sand. Walkways everywhere, including many connecting beach and town. Spotted with eating establishments and lounge chairs and umbrellas to rent. There was an aerobics class at 10:00 on the morning I was there. It appeared to be free and looked quite good. Located at the East end of the boardwalk. Which, is the greatest feature of this beach...a raised boardwalk that goes on for several km. Haven't found a public toilet yet, but did see one shower nearer to the town on one of the walkway connecting town with beach.
Jan S — Google review
It has a network of boardwalks to access the array of bar restaurants that line the beach. Some of the restaurants have upper floors which give you superb views of the beach, sea and sunsets. Sunloungers and umbrellas are also available.
Andrew H — Google review
Beautiful fine sandy beach with clear shoreline ocean. Parade of decked terrace restaurants serving fresh seafood based cuisine at reasonable prices considering their proximity to the beach. The beach just fell short of its 5th star due to a lack of toilet facilities (although those found were pristine) and no access to free use outdoor shower facilities, (those available were coin operated).
Ryan L — Google review
Beautiful beach. Specially early in the morning, when the sun goes up. Looks massive and calm before crawd hits it. Good for taking pictures and relax walk or running

Nature preserve
Mata Nacional das Dunas Litorais de Vila Real de Santo António is a picturesque pine forest stretching for about three kilometers, providing a natural habitat for chameleons and offering a popular spot for picnics and hiking. The Caminho dos Tres Pauzinhos, a bike path shaded by fragrant pine trees, leads to the nearby beaches through the serene surroundings of pine trees, thyme, and curry plants.
So perfect for a run! Well designed, cool with the trees and an epic trail run
Gavin L — Google review
Enjoyed a walked through this park from Monte gordo, to San Antonio beach. Walked back by the beach. About 8 km in total. Didn't sea any cameleons. In summer also not many flowers. However an enjoyable walk.

A beautiful place to walk and find rest! Really enjoyed my walk here!

Zipline & Aerial Adventure Parks
Adventure Park Vila Real de Santo Antonio is a must-see for family tourists in the area. It offers "tree climbing" with three different levels of difficulty, suitable for children and first-time adult climbers. The park provides professional instructors who ensure safety and offer continuous support during the activity. Visitors can enjoy this unexpectedly wonderful experience at affordable prices while feeling secure with well-maintained gear.
We have been a few times already with the family, ages between 6-65. Everybody found an activity suitable for their abilities and we always had a lot of fun. Staff are attentive and helpful, safety measures are also excellent. It is worth taking a picnic and water because there are no catering facilities nearby. The eco toilet is clean. We sure will be back.
Hajnalka S — Google review
We went here with our two kids (7 and 9 years old). The instructors were very helpful, friendly and welcoming. We had a great time. Thank you!
Paul A — Google review
What an unexpectedly wonderful experience! It was my first time doing “arborismo” and I loved it! They have 3 different levels of difficulty, starting with a starter one for children and also good as a warmup for first time ever adults. There was a monitor teaching the safety maneuvers and always watching and giving support, he was very helpful and professional. I felt safe and the gear was all very well kept. The prices are really affordable. Check the photo and notice that when you pay for the most difficult route you have access to the ones below that one. It’s really a must do for a family, friends or a couple. They accept groups. Make sure to book in advance, they only open for scheduled appointments at the moment, from what I understood. I’ll be back for sure.
P4K T — Google review
We booked this for 3 adults and 3 kids aged almost 5, 10 and 12 whilst on holiday. Really nice, challenging experience. The instructors were excellent and really, really good with the kids. I think they are probably used to working with school groups. Recommended+++
Laura N — Google review
They opened on a Sunday for us as long as you have at least 3 people paying. Son 12 and daughter 10 were able to do the entire course and really enjoyed themselves and the instructor was great and patient with the kids.
Nelson R — Google review
The courses go from great for kids to intense for adults, from a little over a meter high to way up top on the pine canopies. Several different obstacles and a great safety system. To top it of the guides are very friendly and helpful. A great team on a great park. Highly recommend.
João — Google review
Had a great experience. First time doing this type of activity. Staff very polite and helpful. 3 levels routes. Prices are ok. Great for kids. Entrance should be more visible. Definitely coming back

Stadium
Sports complex
Sports Complex Vila Real de Santo António offers a wonderful setting for outdoor activities and sports events. The complex features a stadium with secondary fields, training facilities, and fitness amenities set in a pleasant park environment. While the venue lacks some expected amenities like scoreboards and food/drink stations, it has hosted international events such as the Algarve 7s rugby tournament with teams from around the world competing for various trophies.
Very well equipped. Best place to train track and field. Can be crowded sometimes on April.
Joni O — Google review
Very nice in-town outdoor sports venue, but without some expected amenities, like a scoreboard or food/drink stations. At an event, we had food & drink from trucks outside, but it was surprising that the facility doesn't have this function. Stadium track and field is being completely renovated for Olympic teams to use for training. Very nice secondary fields outside the main stadium, plus training and fitness facilities for the athletes, and all located in a pleasant park setting.
Steve R — Google review
We took part in a football tournament at the Vila Real de Santo António Sports Complex this July and were very impressed with the organization. Despite the hot weather — which is expected at that time of year — everything ran smoothly. The pitches were very well prepared and clearly marked, and the overall logistics, including the ticketing process for the presentation, were clear and efficient. We really enjoyed the experience! It’s a facility with excellent conditions for sporting events, and definitely a place we would be happy to return to. Well done to everyone involved in the organizatio
Daniela E — Google review
We attended the opening and closing of our kid's football tournament which they actually won. Great fireworks display for the opening. Seating is on one side only. Not very clean toilets were quite filthy but with people drinking beer this is to be expected. Crowd was not too big but there were about 4500 kids for the tournament.
Joseph M — Google review
Nice place to spend a couple of hours in the gym. Just a few annoying details - I have a card for the sports complex since I own an apartment in VRSA and spend a lot of time here and yet every time I come I have to do paperwork before I can train. It's also quite crowded in the spring. P. S. I'm adding one star to full 5 - they brought new equipment (proper squat racks, a couple of new bars).
Boyan K — Google review
I used the football pitch and the quality was OK. Dressing rooms are a bit sloppy and outdated but sufficient. Stands have a good view, although they are partially in the shade - might become a little chilly during the evenings (not in summer). Friendly and helpful staff.
F H — Google review
Very good workout facility. Indoor& outdoor, weightroom and throwing fields. New running track lanes this year too.
Donavan M — Google review
Excellent training facilities for athletics. Everything is made for the athlete. Lots of hurdles, block starts, speedies and other objects for proper training, easily available to all. There is also a smaller indoor track with a gym. Overall, very good!

Beach
Praia de Santo António is a lovely beach located in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Portugal. It offers a beautiful forest backdrop and during the summer, visitors can enjoy beach bars set up under umbrellas for a relaxing time by the sea. Access to the beach is convenient with options for walking, biking, or taking a short car ride. The fine sand makes it ideal for families with young children.
Even though there are algae as many people mentioned. But it’s quiet, and peaceful. I actually love it here so much more than Monte Gordo. I walked to Monte Gordo and was shocked by the amount of people. You can’t even walk in peace without dodge people sitting around or playing balls. It’s a bit annoying. But here in Praia Santo Antonio. You have plenty of space to chill and relax. And the water is warm for swimming!!
Kas M — Google review
Beautiful beach with clear water. Watch out for weever fishes. Was unlucky to step on one. In case you do too, put your affected part in hot water for around half an hour.
Raul G — Google review
Beautiful beach even on a weekend in April. Decent vehicle access along a gravel lane. I found the beach on a day with calm seas... the fine sand is ideal for a family with young children. I've been coming here for over 10 years and will continue to go. A true paradise.🙂👍

Farmers Markets
The Mercado Municipal is a superb fish market that offers an abundance of fruits and vegetables as well. On Wednesdays in early March, there is ample free parking available on the street nearby, although this may change during the summer months. Similar to Tavira's mercado municipal, the prices at Vila Real de San Antonio's market have risen due to the influx of tourists, expats, and vendors capitalizing on the growing popularity of the eastern Algarve region.
Best for buying local produce
V M — Google review
A wet market that’s great for shopping fish, seafood and fresh produce. The prices are very low and the quality is top, fish is freshly landed. It is clean and very spacious. Remember, this is a municipal market so don’t expect to get so many things. But for everyday life, it is more than adequate. There’s hardly a crowd, you’ll feel at ease choosing your fish without bumping into people. They will clean your fish, squid, and octopus if you ask them and at no extra cost. Most do not speak English, but you can always use a translator. It’s pretty straightforward, the fish and seafood are clearly marked with the corresponding prices. I’m other words, there’s no need to open your mouth. I don’t think haggling will do you any good. You can also get flowers, nuts, lentils, cheese, and cold cuts. I was delighted to find pork rinds, too. If you’re cooking at your accommodation, the market is a must place to go.
M B — Google review
Not a picturesque market, just a big warehouse with fruit & veg one half and fish the other. Worth a look for the selection of sea food - especially the horrific moray eels.
Charles M — Google review
Typical local market. As this is also a village at seaside. It has very fresh fish.
Celio M — Google review
Amazing selection of sea food, plus vegetables and other local delicacies. A wide range of the freshest fish you could ever want, all the cuts of tuna, so many species of crab, squid and cattle fish. Definitely worth a visit to see what looks good and inspire your meal.
George R — Google review
A lot of variety of fresh fish. You can find veggies, honey... Very nice and clean. Don't go to early, life in Algarve has another rhythm
Maria R — Google review
Still another wonderful Algarven municipal market
William G — Google review
This is a great fish market. It also has plenty of fruits and vegetables, too. On a Wednesday in early March, there is a lot of free on-the-street parking in the area. That is likely not to be the case during the summer. Like Tavira's mercado municipal, the prices at the market in Vila Real de San Antonio have increased due to tourists, expats, and vendors taking full advantage of the increasing popularity of the eastern Algarve.

Caramelo Beach Club is a delightful seaside restaurant with a charming drinks and snack shack on the sandy shore. The eatery pleasantly surprises visitors with its delectable cuisine, particularly their outstanding octopus dish known as Polvo Lagareiro. The service provided is exceptional, adding to the overall experience. This establishment offers a superb atmosphere to relax and unwind, boasting excellent food options, sunbeds, and an ideal location. Additionally, the prices are reasonable without being overly expensive.
Great little restaurant right on the beach. They also have a drinks & snack shack down on the sand, but the restaurant is a wonderful surprise because the food is so good! I had the best octopus (Polvo Lagareiro) there that I've had in my short time in the Algarve! And great service.

We dined there a couple times about a year ago and the food was good and the servers helpful. When we tried to return again this year, we were yelled at in front of other customers “ locals only”. I believe it was the owner. If it was too busy to seat us, kindly send us on our way. Instead he was very rude and discriminating towards us.

My husband and i visited this restaurant on several occasions between January and March 2025 whilst on our 6 weeks holiday in Vila Real San Antonio. Popular place with the locals, and very reasonable prices.. Food good value for money and tasty.. On our first visit we had the set 3 course 10 euros menu one lunch time, the waiter forgot to ask which dessert we wanted, we didn't bother mentioning they forgot our desserts, but never mind, we were quite full anyway. We visited on several more occasions but in the evening.. I started with coverts, bread, olives, butter, pate and a main meal for 8 euros...my bacalhau com Nata, rice, & salad was delicious.. Hub had coverts, then Turkey in creamy mushroom sauce with rice, chips & salad,10 euros,.. good wholesome food, and generous portions.. We didn't order desserts because we were too full. Overall a great economical restaurant, plenty of seating inside, and some tables outside.. the staff are friendly.. Pedro, one of the waiters was very efficient, helpful, and accommodating. I Recommend to book a table to avoid disappointment, especially for the evening, alot of locals eat regularly there, so we always booked a table. If we ate at 7-7.30 it was quieter, can get busy after 8.pm onwards. No Car park, only street parking or pay car parks nearby. We are definitely visiting the Taberna restaurant again later this year when we holiday in Vila Real San Antonio.

Would not recommend this place to anyone that wants to eat traditional portuguese food
