A fabulous "Starry" Citadel in great condition. Free to visit and picturesque views over the Gironde river. Many boutique shops and a few cafés. Free Car parking as well as the delightful town of Blaye.

Perfect place to enjoy french cuisine znd walk around, there are plenty of restaurant around the area and it is so pretty. There is always a public market outside and a good view even when you just sit down. But keep in mind parking is not easy when it's weekend.

Open all the time and it's free! The information signs explain the history and structures well. The views of the river are awesome. Many of the stores and restaurants are open all afternoon. And little to no crowd on Thursday
Doray L — Google review
Phenomenal! Don't miss this. The Citadel is huge. You can spend several hours wandering through, on, and under this dramatic, historic site. We arrived by bike and are camping in the Municipal camping area, within the Citadel walls. Absolutely amazing. We had a delicious lunch at Le Bastion, a rustic restaurant, also within the Citadel.

I loved the Citadelle, so pretty. Not crowded on the day I visited even with a couple of river cruise boats in.
Carol L — Google review
So much history here. Reflecting on mankind's past it's sad there was so much greed, killing and destruction...which still goes on today. This place is intact with modern items for sale.

Even with a heat wave going on it was beautiful. The people were very kind. The history is amazing!

Great little ice cream shop in the heart of the Citadelle of Blaye. Lots of different flavours (I loved the honey and lavender) and you can sit outside at the tables in the shade to eat it. Lovely on a hot day.

The ice cream here is outstanding. Nestled inside the UNESCO World Heritage site of the citadel. I have never eaten better ice cream. Took me ages to choose a flavour, eventually I chose Stratiachelli and Coffee. Husband chose Chocolate and Berry.

This review is of the actual Fort. But the tourist office was also fantastic. Don’t miss this UNESCO site! It’s fantastic ‼️‼️ plan on spending the day as there is so much to see in addition to the fort. Visit the galleries and restaurants inside and climb the walls and ramparts. La Galerie in Blaye offers a decent standard of food with crispy and soft salmon, delightful vegetable sides, and jiggly cheesecake. The restaurant provides an English menu and the owners speak English as well. The carefully decorated stone walls create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that is perfect for special occasions like Valentine's Day. With friendly staff, excellent wine choices, and delicious grilled meats, this restaurant is a must-visit spot in Blaye.
Really nice place and great food and service...wine specialists and grilled meats

Decent food standard that we are looking for(since we have tried the other two restaurants and their food is full of faults). The salmon is crispy and soft, and the vegetable side is nice too. My friend was shaking the table because the cheesecake was jiggling like a jelly~ The sorbet was nice too. Most of all, it's probably the only restaurant that provides an English menu alongside and the owners(who also own the hotel apartment above) speaks English too.

Le Bastion is a charming restaurant located at the entrance of the Citadel, making it a convenient stop before exploring the UNESCO World Heritage site. The friendly staff, some of whom speak English and appreciate attempts to converse in French, provide excellent service. The menu offers tasty food such as huge salad-based plates and delicious crepes. While they can get busy during the summer months, it's a lovely place to enjoy a leisurely meal or indulge in ice cream cups with rum shots.
Right at the entrance to the citadel so very handy before your walk around this UNESCO world heritage site. Our plate of food was huge and salad based.

The worst service I’ve ever experienced in France. We were ignored by the staff who could not be bothered to take our order. The staff were very young, inexperienced and we could here them arguing amongst themselves. We waited for service, after 30 mins we went into the restaurant and asked for someone to take our order and were told by an irritated member of staff that they would come and take our order at the table. In total we waited an hour were completely ignored and it was a complete waste of our time. We told them we were leaving and my son and his family who arrived before us wanted to pay for the drinks they had had - they were told to wait to get the bill. We waited a further 15mins and eventually went inside again and said if you won’t take our payment now we are leaving. They grudgingly took payment for 6 drinks. Appalling service - can’t comment on the food never managed to order any. It wasn’t particularly busy just badly managed by poorly trained staff. I wouldn’t bother.
Jeff W — Google review
The coffee good, the place nice, the service horrible. Personal super unfriendly. I wouldn’t recomend the place.
Bugli83 — Google review
Stay away if you can. I ordered one of the savoury crepes, firstly they forgot about my order, so I needed to remind them when I did it took long enough to cook it and my husband was already done with a meal. When my crepe arrived it was undercooked, egg whites were leaking from it. I asked to be cooked again, no apology, no discount. Tourists don’t get treated same way as locals I suppose.
Brigita K — Google review
Waiter was very unprofessional. 22 people left after waiting to be served for 30 minutes. Told us he was running out of fresh juice. Luckily his colleague managed to help us more professionally and make the fresh juice. Great location but subpar service.
Malik B — Google review
This is the worst place I’ve ever visited! Super unfriendly waiter, just talks to his friends, doesn’t do anything, is extremely rude and had 6 people just leave because he is just smoking his cigarette! Clearly in the wrong profession. Very sad experience. We sat down with a baby and he told us to move immediately to a smaller table so we did. But then he never served us. An elderly couple came after us and they were also ignored. He decides where everybody sits never serves them. We ended up leaving! Wow! 🥲
Michiel L — Google review
We visited here twice during our visit and had a lovely lunch both times. We were served by different waiters each time both who spoke English and both who appreciated our efforts in French. Well worth a visit if you are in the Citadel especially the ice cream cups with rum shots!
Carol R — Google review
Sadly of all the restaurants we’ve visited on our 2 week holiday, this was probably the worst experience overall. The food is ok- it’s not great but it’s ok and a bit pricey for the quality. The service though was very poor. It took 50 minutes after being seated to have our order taken, 1 hour and 10 minutes after sitting down for us to have our drinks bought to our table, and 1 hour and 30 minutes to have our dinner brought to the table- we’re only talking crepes… a memory we’ll remember, but sadly not for the right reasons!

Auberge des officiers in Blaye is a hidden gem located within the well-preserved military fortification. Visitors can explore the area by taking a ride on the tourist train or strolling around on foot. The restaurant offers delicious food and friendly, efficient service. Guests appreciated the knowledgeable and English-speaking waitress, as well as the opportunity to practice their French.
What a hidden gem cannot recommend enough the food was delicious the service friendly, swift and efficient. Our waitress was knowledgeable and spoke good English but did appreciate our efforts in French which gave you the confidence to try more. I so wish we had found this restaurant on our 1st night in Blaye because it was wonderful would highly recommend knocks spots of the god awful restaurant (la petite port which should be avoided like the plague) we had the misfortune to visit on our 1st night. Cest la vis!

Charming restaurant, very fresh food and excellent service. We had moules frites which tasted delightful and very fresh as well as the fries. The wine was crisp and coffee fantastic. The service was lovely, the lady was very attentive. Highly recommend!

It is a nice place to have lunch when visiting the citadel because the location is nice and peaceful when you sit outside. It’s shaded (handy on those sweaty hot days). The staff is very friendly, but do not give the best service. Also the kitchen could do a better job. The entree (tomato salade with goat cheese cream) was simple but good, you also can’t expect much more when paying only 12,5 for a 2 course lunch. Unfortunately they forgot about our second course and after waiting for a good 45 minutes the waitress came and asked if we wanted dessert, so we kindly let het know we were expecting our steaks. It was busy but we could clearly notice they just forgot about us. When I got mine, which I ordered “saignant”, it was even more cooked than “a point”. I didn’t feel like waiting 15minutes for another one after the long wait we’ve already had, so I ate it. Fries are mediocre and the accompanying salad was simple, but again… what do you expect for a 12,5euro lunch. They had some beers on the menu which I hadn’t had before which was nice. Coffee (espresso) was ok. Overal this is not a bad place in a touristy environment and I would rather give them a 3,5 stars if I could. But I can’t and 4 is just too many. So 3 stars it is.

(Translated by Google) A TREAT !! Passing through Blaye, we were visiting the pedestrian streets when we came across this restaurant with a shaded terrace in the middle of a very cute little street. The owners are adorable and very professional. The products are exquisite, of excellent quality, absolutely fresh and extremely delicious!! 😋😋😋 We feasted! We appreciated being able to chat with the Chef who came in person to ask us if everything went well. It was very very good! Thank you for this delicious moment. We will be back soon!! 😜
