San Leo in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in San Leo, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
San Leo is a hilltop village in Emilia-Romagna known for its dramatic fortress perched on a sheer rocky outcrop overlooking the Marecchia Valley. Its historic center preserves Romanesque and medieval architecture, including the Pieve (parish church) and the San Leone Cathedral. The town is also associated with figures like Dante and the alchemist Cagliostro, adding literary and historical interest. Panoramic views of the surrounding countryside make it a popular stop for photographers and day-trippers exploring the region inland from Rimini.
With favorites like Fortress of San Leo, Palazzo Mediceo San Leo, and Belvedere San Leo, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Alchimia Bar Ristorante Pizzeria and Ristorante Osteria La Corte di Berengario II so you can get the best taste of San Leo while you’re here. The Fortress of San Leo, also known as Rocca di San Leo, is a striking hilltop castle and former prison that has been transformed into a museum showcasing an array of weapons and instruments of torture. Situated in the municipality of San Leo in the province of Rimini, Emilia-Romagna, this fortress is perched atop a rocky peak overlooking the town of Leontine and commanding breathtaking views over Valmarecchia.
A small old town at the bottom of a fortress, which invites to exploration. Great view around most of the town. A short hike to the fortress itself is rewarding as the fortress is also big and has many floors, information and weapons from different eras on display. I recommend going there👍 On top of the fortress theres a stunning view around the area🙂

A decade ago, I visited the Fortress of San Leo, and I was really impressed by how well-maintained the construction still was. One of the most striking parts of the visit was the torture room, where people accused of heresy, like Cagliostro, were imprisoned by Pope Pius IV. The tools used for torture were on display, which gave a chilling but fascinating glimpse into the past. The region itself is full of culture and offers stunning landscapes, plus the food in Emilia Romagna is incredible—definitely a highlight of the trip!
Fernando T — Google review
Tricky to rate this. We went mid may. Clouds had rolled in so not much of a view. Went to the tourist info area which seemed to be closed even though someone was inside. We decided to walk up to the castle. The pedestrian walkway was very crumbly and slippy. Not good. Again the ticket shop was lit up and sort of open but no one inside. There was an automatic ticket machine. We pressed the English translation button. All it did was change the top word to "Entance" but the rest stayed in English! Worked out as a 10 euro entry. But no one to tell what there was and no views due to low cloud decided not to go in. Walked back down the road rather than go down the dodgy steps. The town itself was nice with an interesting church. We were unlucky with weather but the service could have been better.
Chris W — Google review
Impressive structure and great views. However inside is less impressive, mostly empty rooms (which is understandable given it’s previous role as a prison). Majority of information in Italian only. If you are a fan of torture tools, you will see plenty inside.
Błażej — Google review
We followed the steep, zig zag path up the hillside through the forest to arrive in front of the castle. The castle looks like a state of the art 16th century creation and the location must have made it almost impregnable to assault, with sheer cliffs on almost every side and just one narrow road leading up to it. Entry was 10€ and we spent a couple of hours there as there was so much to see. The views were the most obvious and spectacular thing - all the way to the Adriatic Sea and possibly San Marino, with every hilltop on the Appenines seems to have a castle on it. There is a well marked route through the castle with the fortified tunnels and fireports followed by the original prison cells and exhibits of torture and the inquisition. The inner structure had barracks, armouries, cells for Papal prisoners and a museum about the life of the enigmatic Cagliostro. He was the most famous prisoner of the fortress, a confidence trickster who travelled throughout Europe and mixed with the rich and famous, involved in alchemy, freemasonry and healing and regarded as a heretic by the church. His death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in the fortress. He had a small cell with no door, he was lowered in from the room above, where his guard stayed and watched him through a grille and spyhole. I'm sure the view lost its appeal after a while and he died after 4 years in his cell. The armouries had a mixture of medieval, WW1 and WW2 weapons, quite a comprehensive collection! We sat and had an ice cream from the museum shop before doing a final circuit of the walls and then carefully making our way down the path.
Marcus H — Google review
Very nice and quiet place. You can buy the tickets directly from the touch machine at the entrance. We didn't manage to go inside as we had the dog and nobody was in the office area to ask if it was possible to enter with the dog. It was less busy then we expected but the view is nice from outside as well.
D. L — Google review
Lovely place for a day trip - especially if you like walking, castles, history, and great views! You could spend many hours inside the castle looking at all the artifacts and watching the films they have about the castle. If you spend time walking around everything then it's well worth the €9 entry fee.
Corina P — Google review
Wonderful visit on a very foggy day but still worth it. Easy walk up hill that is well sign posted. Good signage inside. Probably great views but not the day I visited as you can see in the photos.

The village has a rich history that inspires various cultural events and festivals, such as 'Giullari in Festival' and 'AlchimiaAlchimie,' which celebrate the traditions of the past. The Cathedral of St. Leo is a significant religious building located on a rock spur with prehistoric sacred origins. It was built in the Middle Ages on ancient foundations dating back to the seventh century when San Leo was designated as a diocesan seat.

Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta is the oldest building in San Leo, dating back to the Carolingian period. It is made entirely of stone ashlars and is believed to have been built on the spot where St. Leo retired for prayer. The church has undergone modernization during the Romanesque period and stands as a remarkable example of medieval architecture in Montefeltro.

(Translated by Google) The Latin term plebs means "people," the humblest social strata of the population, who had embraced the Christian values rapidly spreading throughout the Latin world. During the Middle Ages, the term came to refer to the building where not only the sacraments were celebrated and solemn masses were attended, but also where family heads met to discuss community issues. Indeed, after the reorganization of the plebeian network in the Carolingian era, the role of the parish church grew, both civil and administrative. The Parish Church of San Leo can be metaphorically depicted as a ship stranded on a rock, a stone ship forever anchored to the rock that supports it and of which it is composed. The building is in fact positioned astride a rocky outcrop of the Leontine Massif, so that, to the east and west respectively, there is space for two rooms beneath the naves: the crypt or confessional and the so-called Sacellum of Saint Leo, which bears traces of a sort of apse carved directly into the rock. It is accessed from an external door near the façade. The Sacellum preserves, reused in the splay of a single-lancet window, the front of a sarcophagus, with the mystical depiction of two peacocks drinking from the cantharus. This, together with the relief embedded in the south wall of the church, constitutes the oldest sculptural evidence of the building, perhaps dating back to before the 8th century.

(Translated by Google) The church dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta (more commonly Pieve) is the oldest religious building in Montefeltro. Perched on a rock, in the historic center of the ancient village of San Leo, it is preserved in good condition. Given the particular area in which it was built, to enter it is necessary to use a side door after having climbed a short climb. The interior is quite sparse and essential, the ancient columns and pillars support the three naves. The altar is raised above the main floor and is accessed via a staircase, on the sides other steps, but this time downhill, lead to the crypt, positioned under the altar, where the chapel of the Madonna is visible. In addition to the materials used for construction, one can get an idea of the age of the obsolete architectural structure. Even though it has windows, the interior appears a bit gloomy. Upon entering it seems to be catapulted into another era.

I love this rustic osteria in the beautiful hilltown of San Leo run by brothers Daniele (manager) & Paolo (chef). For me it's a real destination that just keeps getting better. I've eaten here four times now and loved it every times. Twice I've brought guests on my small-group food & wine tours and they enjoy it as much as I do. Have the passatelli with cave-aged cheese and the gnocchi with wild boar ragu. In season the rabbit with wild fennel is also great. Skip the carafes of house wine and order a bottle of something local - the prices are all so reasonable and the sommelier very knowledgeable to assist with choices. Finish with pistacchio semifreddo. Great service and wonderful atmosphere. Can't wait to come back.

We booked online, not realizing that we would be driving to the top of a mountain and a fortress. What a treat. Only three rooms at this Inn, and we were the only guests. Gianlucca (probably spelled wrong) spoke enough English to get us checked in and help us to order dinner when we were ready. The Woodfired Pizza was excellent! Prices very reasonable. The weather was not great, so we were unable to fully appreciate the views, but could tell they would have been fantastic. The only complaint I would have is that breakfast was pretty sparse. Well I did not expect the full spread since we were the only guests, I was a little disappointed to just get a little bit of hard bread and cheese with our coffee. But it did appear that they were not prepared to have guests that morning, as we booked and arrived very late. While the fare was not the best, it was served with a smile by the older gentleman who I believed to be Gianluca's dad (?) The place is predominantly a restaurant, and I think it would make a wonderful date night for anybody who wanted to go up there, have a good meal and a couple glasses of wine, and spend the night. All in all, a fantastic experience.

But people, the passatelli with black truffles was one of my favorite dishes in Italy from all of our trips. The cheese platter was unique and we savored every bite. Make a day of it. Go to San Marino early before the crowds, then head here for lunch and trek to the San Leo rocca. A beautiful Italian day.

Very typical and very tasty kitchen. Owner cooking dishes and meets clients like a good friends. The restaurant was established in the middle of previous century and belongs to one family. English, French tourists will have no problem with ordering food. Kindly recommend to visit

Day 2

Center of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the center side of town. Start the day off with Torre Civica San Leo, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Belvedere San Leo. All together, your day would be filled with about 3 hours of non-stop fun.

The magnificent tower of the village offers a breathtaking panoramic view from its summit. Visitors can ascend to the top by paying a nominal fee of 3 euros per person, which is certainly worth it. The Torre Civica San Leo is a splendid historical landmark that stands tall in the town, providing visitors with an opportunity to appreciate its beauty and take in the surrounding scenery.
(Translated by Google) San Leo Castle is not just a building, but a journey through time. On a quiet morning, walking alone in the castle courtyard and the prison cells, one thinks deeply about the stormy centuries of history and those who were imprisoned here. And the panoramic view of San Marino only increased this awe. It was a truly special experience at this time, at the first light of the day, to discover this place of historical importance.

Took a long way just to see it and we were denied entry although it wasn't closed. There were two more hours of daylight. Also too expensive, ticket for one fortress is more expensive than to see everything in neighbouring San Marino. Example of bad tourism. Don't recommend.

(Translated by Google) Civic tower but also bell tower, every now and then I go back to visit San Leo because I consider it the most beautiful village I have ever visited, too bad I didn't find the tower open but I don't give up.
Sandro S — Google review
(Translated by Google) The bell tower is a building of great beauty, a complete work of the Romanesque style, indeed, an emblematic example of that architectural style. The architecture is a natural outgrowth of the rock on which it is founded, one with the rock itself, as in the Gospel parable: a manifesto of the Christian faith for centuries. Historically, we know very little about the tower, which in its external layout is certainly contemporary with the adjacent Cathedral of 1173. Its square perimeter encompasses and conceals within it a circular structure, rising to the bell tower.

(Translated by Google) Together with the fortress it can be identified even before reaching San Leo thanks to its height which reaches 28 metres. Unfortunately it is not always possible to enter and climb up and consequently admire the surrounding panorama from the eight openings at the top. Like almost all the buildings in the village, it dates back to the Middle Ages and is preserved in good condition. It stands near the Duomo but is a work in itself. However, the sound of the bells spreads very loudly throughout much of the surrounding area.

(Translated by Google) Interesting and well preserved, the Civic Tower of San Leo was born with defensive purposes and then became the bell tower of the Cathedral which stands a few meters away. The tower is not always accessible to the public, but if you find the opportunity to visit it inside you will be rewarded with a 360 degree view of Montefeltro!

Perched on a scenic spot, this impressive memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the fallen. Nestled in the belvedere of the village, it exudes an intriguing allure that captivates visitors and locals alike. With its historical significance and beautiful surroundings, the monument offers an engaging exploration into the past, allowing everyone to reflect on the profound impact of warfare on society.

(Translated by Google) It is perhaps the most modern work that can be seen in San Leo even if it is not in perfect condition. It stands in the center of a panoramic garden slightly off-centre from the historic buildings of the city. However, it is easily reachable by walking through the few streets that make up the ancient village. Beautiful panorama view and amazingly relaxing atmosphere at the view point! Great place worth five stars. Only downside is the very unfortunate gardening practice of planting the whole area with rolls of grass embedded in nets of plastic covering the whole area. The plastic is in the whole square hidden in the earth below the grass and pollutes the area. A lot of microplastic for future generations. The local municipality should get the gardener responsible for the pollution to remove the plastic nets and remaining waste so that it fits the pure spiritual ambient of San Leo again.

(Translated by Google) We stumbled upon it by chance after being in the pool because we were hungry, so we could eat something. The idea was to split an appetizer and have a first course each but it wasn't possible... According to the girl who served us, who seemed quite embarrassed, as the owners weren't present it wasn't possible to have appetizers. Everything is ok, but honestly I don't think it's impossible to cut a few pieces of cheese or cold cuts and serve them. We took two first courses, I had requested a large portion but it was a standard portion, even smaller than many places I'm used to going to. Romagna. All in all good, but too salty. After the first one we took the courgettes in gratin because, in addition to there being 4 things in the mix, there were no more tomatoes and they didn't make baked potatoes... a disappointment. Overcooked and looked old, a shame. In light of everything, we won't be returning. Two first courses, a grated courgette, a water, €30. Very little choice for vegetarians. It can be done better…
