The Madeira Botanical Garden is a hillside paradise boasting a bird park, natural history museum, and glass houses with stunning sea views. This modern marvel of contemporary architecture, co-designed by renowned architects Abalos & Herreros, features a unique latticed wooden canopy providing shade and dynamic interplay between light and shadow. The garden's design seamlessly blends with nature, offering visitors an immersive experience. Additionally, the Nini Design Center provides innovative spaces for exhibitions and workshops.
Wow — what a beautiful place! 🌺 The Madeira Botanical Garden is full of stunning plants, colors, and amazing views. Such a peaceful spot to wander and enjoy nature — absolutely worth a visit! 🌿✨

This place is quite interesting, but it can be a bit tortuous to get there. You either go by taking two cable cars from Funchal, or use road transport. If you go by cable car, it is somewhat counter-intuative, as you go up on the Maderia Cable Car to Monte and then you walk 300m or so to the Botanical Garden Cable Car, which takes you half way back down to get to the garden! It is important to note that you must not pass the ticket office for the botanical garden cable car without an electronic or paper ticket for the ride. There is a steep section down to the cable car entry point and there is no opportunity to buy a ticket there. It's a stiff walk uphill to go back and get one! The garden itself is spread out over numerous terraces down the hillside from the cable car terminal. There are some steep and uneven pathways. The garden is quite unimpressive at first, but it gets better as you go down. The interactive map is worth downloading via the QR code in the garden. Remember that what goes down must come up, and if you are going back on the cable car, you will have to get back up there! Not to mention the short but steep section back up to the other cable car! If you only want to go to the botanical gardens and cable cars are not your thing (and twisty roads don't bother you), it would be worth checking out other options to get there (by car, taxi or bus), but if you like cable cars and/or you would also like to spend some time in Monte, then go for it and enjoy the ride!

I enjoyed my visit to the Botanical Garden in Madeira. The park is beautiful and has a great variety of plants, making it a pleasant place to walk around and relax. However, I think the entrance fee is a bit too high, and parking was a real problem — it was hard to find a spot nearby. Despite that, I’m glad I went, and overall, it was a nice experience.
Magdalena B — Google review
Beautiful garden. We took the cable car from Funchal but took the bus ride back from the garden. The bus ride was great with local sceneries. Good views from cable cars as well. Cable car ride was a bit pricey. Note: there are two separate cable car rides: Funchal to Monte, Monte to Botanical Garden.

The Madeira Botanical Garden is an absolute gem and a must-visit while on the island. The gardens are beautifully designed, with an incredible variety of exotic plants, vibrant flowers, and perfectly maintained pathways. Every corner feels like a discovery, with breathtaking views over Funchal and the ocean adding even more magic to the experience. It’s not only a place for nature lovers but also for anyone who enjoys peaceful walks surrounded by beauty. The layout is easy to explore, and there are plenty of shaded spots to pause and take in the scenery. The palms collection and colorful patterned flower beds are especially impressive. A visit here is both relaxing and inspiring — perfect for a calm afternoon. Highly recommended for families, couples, or solo travelers looking to enjoy the natural charm of Madeira. 🌺🌿
Gelena J — Google review
Lovely gardens but not the best time in July to go. The spring is supposed to be spectacular with all the flowers in bloom. Saying that the gardens are pretty, lots of mature trees sans shrubs. Lovely little cafe to stop for that break.
HELEN C — Google review
Nice place to spend an hour and a half or two. It's not as interesting as the Monte Palace Gardens unless you are very interested in different plant/tree types but still a nice place to wonder around and see the variety of flora and fauna. The cafe in the gardens did some good food as well.
Bala S — Google review
The Madeira Botanical Garden is one of the true gems of the island – a place where nature, peace, and breathtaking views come together in perfect harmony. Visiting it is not just a walk through a garden, but a full sensory experience that leaves you refreshed and inspired. From the moment you enter, you are greeted with spectacular terraces filled with vibrant flowers, exotic plants, and lush greenery that reflect Madeira’s rich biodiversity. The garden is beautifully organized, with each area showcasing unique species from around the world, as well as plants that are native to Madeira and rarely found elsewhere. One of the highlights is the famous patterned flower beds, arranged like a giant carpet of colors – a masterpiece of natural design and a perfect spot for photos. Another unmissable feature is the panoramic view over Funchal and the Atlantic Ocean, which is simply breathtaking and makes the entire visit unforgettable. Beyond the stunning beauty, the garden also has a strong educational aspect. The labels and explanations are clear and informative, offering insights into the extraordinary flora housed here. You feel both relaxed and enriched by learning about such diversity in one place. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, with benches and shaded spots where you can simply sit, take in the scenery, and enjoy a moment of peace. The staff maintain the grounds with great care, ensuring everything looks immaculate. Whether you are a plant enthusiast, a photography lover, or simply someone who wants to connect with nature while appreciating one of Madeira’s treasures, the Botanical Garden is an absolute must-visit. 🌿 I left with my heart full of joy and my camera full of beautiful memories. This place truly shows why Madeira is called the “Garden of the Atlantic.” Highly recommended! 🌿

Palheiro Gardens is a stunning hillside venue that offers breathtaking views of the ocean and showcases a variety of tropical plants. The gardens originated in the early 1800s when exotic trees from around the world were planted, and over time, more exotics were introduced, creating an impressive ensemble of gardens including the Main Garden, Sunken Garden, Ribeiro do Inferno, Rose Garden, and Ladys Garden.
Got the bus up from Funchal and had an enjoyable time in the gardens. Nicely set out, still some colour on show considering it's November. A nice simple Chapel in the grounds, and a tea room which served a variety of snacks. Well worth a visit.

One of the most beautiful and tranquil gardens I have ever visited! Varied, sublime and quiet! Full of most interesting plants and trees from around the world. Truly, a most delightful and relaxing place to really enjoy. I cannot recommend it highly enough and a highlight of the visit to Madeira.
James W — Google review
I absolutely loved my visit to the Palheiro Gardens! The gardens themselves are stunning, but what truly made the experience unforgettable was the weather. We were visiting while the gardens were literally inside a cloud! Being enveloped in the mist and cool air made the whole garden feel incredibly atmospheric and peaceful. It was a truly magical walk. Highly recommended!
Alina — Google review
Beautiful gardens but not easy to reach. Used Bolt (like Uber) dropping off ticket office and picked up adjacent hotel to avoid slog back up hill.
Charles M — Google review
This garden feels like entering a fairytale. Honestly, imo it’s more worthy to visit than the botanical gardens, it’s very quiet and whimsical. Great to spend the day and read a book.
Lotte M — Google review
Hard to get timings right for all the blooms, missed most of camelias unfortunately. But layout and design of the garden is great, a mix of long paths and beds, with some smaller intricate areas. Cobbled paths had fantastic patterns.

Miradouro do Pináculo

4.7

Observation deck
Miradouro do Pináculo, located east of Funchal, offers a unique perspective of the city and its harbor. It is particularly popular for watching the sunset and capturing stunning photographs. While it may not have designated parking, visitors can still easily access the viewpoint by car or public bus. The panoramic views of Funchal and its coastline make it a fantastic spot to take in the beauty of the area from above.
Great location for a sunset photo there is not a huge amount of parking here, so arrive early. Great view over Funchal as the light fades.
Rob C — Google review
A truly wonderful viewpoint offering magnificent views. A must-visit spot, particularly for watching the sunset.
Gelena J — Google review
Incredibly beautiful spot for photos and spending the last hours of the day during sunset. We took a small path / green stairs to the tip and enjoyed the view at its finest.
Maria G — Google review
Great place to watch the sunset! Amazing views to the view of Funchal. If you haven't rented a car you can still get here by public bus.
Cristina V — Google review
Miradouro do Pináculo is one of those spots that makes you stop mid sentence and just stare. Perched high above Funchal at 283 meters, it gives you a front row seat to the city spilling into the sea, with the ocean stretching endlessly beyond. Late afternoon is where it really shines, golden light hits the bay, the rooftops glow, and it feels like the whole island is showing off a bit. There are a few benches where you can just sit, breathe, and let the view do its thing. You’ll catch lizards darting by, hear the breeze over the trees, and watch boats cutting through the water far below. Parking is a pain, so go early or hop on a bus, but either way it’s worth the trip. Whether you’re hunting for the perfect photo or just want a quiet place that still feels alive, this is easily one of Madeira’s best viewpoints.
Dave T — Google review
Nice view, but we stepped in leftover vomit walking the few feet from the car to the viewpoint. It's right off the highway so cars passed by quickly.
Soraya H — Google review
We visited the view point in morning and realised it is more worth visiting in evening at the time of sunset. That is also the place for photography. It faces the Funchal port and city and gives beautiful view of the same.
Praveen M — Google review

Cristo Rei is a clifftop monument in Garajau, Madeira, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The statue, created by Georges Serraz in 1927, resembles the famous Christ the Redeemer in Rio De Janeiro. Visitors can take a leisurely walk to Ponta do Garajau and enjoy panoramic vistas of Funchal and the coastline.
The statue reminded me of a smaller version of Christ the Redeemer in Rio, though I’m not sure about the exact differences, just had that same vibe. It’s a beautiful spot with a nice, peaceful atmosphere. The best part is that it’s free to visit and open 24/7. There’s a set of steps leading downhill to the base of the statue, and walking down felt really nice. You also get stunning panoramic views of the cliffs and the ocean as you go down, which makes the experience even better. The view looking up at the statue from below is also pretty impressive. They have cable cars that take you down to the beach for 5 euros per person, but we didn’t try them. Overall, it was a really nice experience and definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
Isuru C — Google review
Beautiful statue overlooking the ocean. Stairs take you down a path so you can see the statue on all sides. Easy hike. I think there are about 200 stairs. Beautiful views of the ocean and coast line. It's an iconic spot to see when visiting Madeira. It is free to park and to enter the pathway.
Sharon O — Google review
What a magnificent monument! It’s reminiscent of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro but with a clone of the Golden Gate Bridge right next door. Yes, go on the grounds, but don’t forget to look around the area for even better views of this magnificent statue. What has been is a beautiful city, and sometimes dominates the skyline from across the river.
David S — Google review
Must see in Lisbon. Spectacular to see in person. Tickets are cheap and the views from the top are fantastic. Would definitely recommend checking out! Great souvenir shop as well with surprisingly decent pricing.
Yohanna M — Google review
Lovely place for views, the religious connection is obvious. This statue is older than the one in Rio so worth the visit if you are Catholic/ religious
Robert C — Google review
Christ the King in Madeira is a beautiful statue of Jesus Christ that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean from a dramatic cliff on the island’s south coast. The Cristo Rei of Garajau is a statue of Jesus Christ with open arms, facing the ocean — very similar in style to the famous Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (though it’s actually older). It symbolizes peace, faith, and protection for sailors and the people of Madeira.Situated in Garajau, on the southern coast of Madeira, about 15–20 minutes from Funchal by car.

Popular sightseeing spot and a cable car station leading to the beach. Nice walking path through the steps. Beautiful views around.

Beach
Reis Magos Beach, located to the east of Funchal in Madeira, is a small rocky beach that has been awarded the Blue Flag for its water quality. It's an ideal spot for swimming and cooling off after a morning hike on one of the nearby Levada trails. The beach offers seasonal lifeguards and a protected swimming zone, making it safe for families with children.
Amazing beach, with 3 different swimming zones. One of the zones is extremely good and safe for kids. Along the beach they have free wood pallets (big size) all around the stony area, so you can comfortably arrange the area if you have at least a towel.
Artem — Google review
This beach in Madeira offers a rather unusual experience. The surface is concrete, and the seating area is on stones, which might not be the most comfortable setup. The view is also underwhelming compared to other beaches on the island. However, it does have a small shop and a cozy restaurant, which are nice touches. Overall, it is not the most appealing spot and may not be worth a special trip.
M J — Google review
A quiet (early March) promenade and beach frequented by sun seekers and brave swimmers. The promenade has some showers as well as a cafe serving a good selection of food for all. Beach is rocky, see photos, with pools where people were swimming. Along the beach are a few wooden wind breaks which, if you can get one, provide excellent sun traps. The whole area is served by the promenade that stretches along this part of the coast.
Dave F — Google review
Lovely public beach. Natural pool for kids but depends on the tide - can be empty) there's also a beautiful promenade and few cafes and restaurants in the area. Please note it's not a sandy but rock beach. Public WC and changing room, street parking and supervised beach (during summer season).
Olesya Z — Google review
Wonderful place, full of locals and free access to the beach.
Algert I — Google review
We have been to now 6 swimming spots and this is by far our favorite. This is very surprising as I never thought I would like a pebble beach. This is a great location for small children as there is a closed off spot to help keep the water as calm as possible. There are lifeguards patrolling here. There are 3 spots to swim. One side is a normal pebble beach with a few umbrellas and wooden beds. There is the middle area where it is the closed off one. One the other side of the closed off beach is open water where it is quite deep and you can jump off the stairs or the top. By the open ocean beach are the outside showers. There are public bathrooms here, make sure you bring your own tissues for when they run out of paper. By the bathrooms are dressing rooms. First aid is also in this area. Right behind the beach are 2 restaurants and a SSI diving school/sea school.
Andrea L — Google review
Amazing vistas, welcoming locals, and very good seafood restaurants.

The restaurant Reis Magos is a great place to enjoy a delicious meal with stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. The high season during which reservations are essential is always full, but in the low season it can be quite crowded. The fish is definitely worth trying, and the service is always friendly and attentive.
Very convenient oceanfront location. Best shrimp risotto I've ever had, had to go back to eat it again.

We had lunch and dinner at this restaurant with a great view on the ocean and a natural pool. Staff serves quickly and friendly, but it's hard to wrap up and pay. The pizza has far too much cheese to our liking, so we left most of in on our plates.
Patrick M — Google review
Nice restaurant with the ocean view. I recommend to choose seafood or fish. We had fried squid- they were super soft and also fish soup-thick and super tasty. Also pick traditional garlic bread. Tha last meal- Salmon was a bit dry-nithing special. Overall nice place to have a good meal.

We enjoyed a very tasty meal here whilst staying nearby. The location is excellent, right on the ocean. We’d recommend the fish!
Susan S — Google review
Quiet uncrowded cafe located on the back of the beach serving a good selection of adult and children’s food and drinks. Visited in early March, warm day and braver people than me swimming in the sea from the sheltered but rocky beach.
Dave F — Google review
Lovely location at the end of the Canico promenade with excellent views of the Desertas islands. I had the chef's vegetarian special and it was a large portion, a little rich for my taste and I could only manage half of it. My husband just had the local bread which was excellent. We're both vegetarian but diners having the meat and fish dishes seemed to be enjoying them, the waiter brought a selection of local fish out to the table behind us for them to choose from. Friendly and efficient service.
Susan K — Google review
The food was ok, and the service was amazing. It has a nice view, which is always good. It's a bit pricey for what it is, but I guess that's because of the location.
Diana S — Google review
Lovly place with a beautiful view on the sea. The Food is just delicious, the portions are good and it tastes awesome. But the best is the most friendly staff working there, helping you to decide and are very polite. It was a wonderful experience and we ate here several evenings.

Neptuno is a charming restaurant with a friendly staff and quick service. The menu offers delicious local dishes such as scabbard Madeira style, beef skewers, Neptuno salad, swordfish with banana and maracuya sauce, and passionfruit mousse. The prices range from 10 to 14 euros per dish with sides. Guests can also enjoy refreshing sangria or fresh orange juice while dining in the outside area with table service provided.
We had dinner at the restaurant twice during our vacation. The service was considerate and fast. The food was simple, fresh and delicious. I would recommend the mango or passion pudding for dessert! This restaurant is a great place for eating and spending the evening which is also preferred by the locals. Thank you!

Its a lovely place and Maria was our server and she was the best!! There was only 2 girls and they were busy at about 2:30.I ordered the burger and my husband ordered the tuna sandwich. Even though my burger patty was so thin it was raw in the middle, this was the first time I ever sent something back in Portugal, my Portuguese is getting better. Maria offered me a steak sandwich instead and I said yes. It was pretty good. My husband lived his tuna fish sandwich. We sat outside and it was nice.

Restaurant
Atlantis Restaurante is located at a stunning Atlantic coast location, offering spectacular views and stylish decor. The venue serves delicious seafood dishes, including parrotfish and other extraordinary options. Guests can enjoy the beautiful view while savoring blueberry pudding for dessert. The restaurant also features a bar with happy hour drinks and attentive staff. While the food was good overall, some dishes lacked flavor, although the limpets were highly recommended.
Went there for my wife’s birthday and they decorated the table and gave us complimentary champagne. Great service, great food and really nice view!
Pedro G — Google review
The restaurant is directly located at the coast with a stunning view to the ocean, especially if you sit in the outside area. The service has been excellent and all the staff members are very friendly. The food was a solid 3 out of 5. We had the rib eye steak and a fish filet. The meat quality was very good, just a bit overcooked. The fish filet was nice. The main dishes comes with 2 side dishes each, which didn’t convinced us. The vegetables tasted rather flat and were not really warm. Same with the spinach. I think there is room for improvement. I do like the ambience here very much.
Leonhard L — Google review
If we could give more than 5 stars, we absolutely would! We visited this restaurant five times during our stay – that alone says it all. The food is outstanding – both fish and meat dishes were incredibly well-prepared and full of flavor. On top of that, the view of the ocean is simply breathtaking, especially from the terrace right by the sea. What really made the experience special was the consistently friendly and professional service from the entire team – no matter who was working. A special shout-out to Carlos, who was there almost every day and always made us feel welcome and cared for. Also, we were truly impressed by how allergy-friendly the restaurant is. I have a severe peanut allergy, and the team had a perfect solution prepared in advance. The kitchen staff already knew about it before our arrival and handled it with great care and professionalism. Despite the restrictions, we didn’t miss out on anything and were able to enjoy amazing food every single time. We can only highly recommend this place – for the food, the view, the atmosphere, and the exceptional team. Absolutely worth a visit it!

If I could have give 6 stars, I would! Absolutely fantastic! 🧡 Delicious food and the most friendly service ever!
Nedim S — Google review
The view is spectacular and you should definitely book a time with that in mind (in darkness there is nothing to see). We really enjoyed our happy hour drinks at the bar and the staff are wonderful - polite, professional and attentive. The food was good but I would say nothing really great. I ordered fish of the day and it really lacked flavour - a sauce of some kind would have really helped. I had limpets for entre and they were very good - I recommend those. Portions were generous. The price was good - not a bargain but not overpriced either. If I had my time again I would have a drink in the bar but not eat at the restaurant. The food just needs more flavour - it was not disappointing exactly but it didn't match the splendour of the location and was so close to being very good that it's a bit of a shame.
Laura M — Google review
Service was excellent and food beautifully presented but regrettably it was too bland for our taste. I had the vegan pasta which was OK but lacking in flavour, my husband had the vegetarian curry which again had little flavour and further suffered from what tasted like over cooked white rice rather than the basmati it said on the menu.

If you're on the hunt for a mouthwatering burger experience, "Bora Lá Comer" is an absolute gem you shouldn't miss. Nestled in a central location, this spot boasts friendly staff and an inviting atmosphere that makes it perfect for a quick bite. The burgers are nothing short of spectacular, featuring juicy patties nestled in delicious local buns that will leave your taste buds dancing with joy. Don't forget to pair your meal with their flavorful fries—though some might wish they were crunchier!
Pretty damn good burger. It didn't have an English menu, but since hamburger is pretty much the same in every language, we had no problem. The place is a bit funny, but since the burger was out of this world - 5 stars instead of 4.

One of the best burgers I've ever had. Friendly staff, central location and absolutely delicious food! Same goes for the fries, a must try, though they could be a little bit crunchier. The location is also the only downside, it's right next to the road and one can smell the cars a bit. This place however is a must visit if you're looking for a quick bite and you're in the area.

Day 2

Northwest side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northwest side side of town. Start the day off with Praia do Garajau, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Jardim do Caniço de Baixo. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Beaches
Praia do Garajau is a stunning pebble beach located in the south of Madeira, near Funchal. Accessible by a scenic cable car ride, this beach offers breathtaking views along the way. It's known for its crystal-clear waters, making it an ideal spot for diving and snorkeling with abundant marine life to explore. The presence of a lifeguard ensures a worry-free experience.
A good spot for snorkeling that isn't too crowded. We saw some blue angel fish, wrasse, scissor fish, and even some crabs along the cliff side. 🐠 🐟 We ended up taking the cable car down and back up due to lugging around our masks, snorkel, and booties (water shoes) which made for an easy time since it took us directly to the beach. The rocks can get pretty hot so it was good to have water shoes on the beach and wading into the water. A nice place!
Ellette M — Google review
Highly recommend! It doesn’t get too busy and it’s a really lovely place to swim. I would recommend popping to sports zone nearby and buying some specific water shoes tho as there are a lot of rocks even when you get into the water.
Jessica S — Google review
Amazing day to swim and make memories! You can swim in ocean and have delicious food as well. Please be aware of rocky beach, best if you have swimming shoes. Don't forget to bring your diving equipment as well.

We visited Cristo sculpture, closed around due to maintenance, but walked to the view point at the back. There we discovered this wonderful beach. Tip, take rubber shoes to walk on the big rocky beach!! Beautiful clear water to snorkel.
Paola M — Google review
Amazing beach, well equipped, pleasant walk from the parking lot or by cable car. Crystal clear water, beautiful views of the cliffs. Nice bar, pleasant service and atmosphere, fair prices.
Milos C — Google review
Its absolutely beautiful here, the restaurant a little less, the service aint that great, been there twice and it both times just forgot to bring what i wanted to have took really long and even took forever for us to be able to pay. Furthermore the beach itself is really amazing, the transport down was for us about €5 p/p and really fun to look over the beach, its crystal clear water and gorgeous marine life, one day ill go diving here. Recommend to go here!
Kelsey — Google review
You can either walk down the steep hill or get the cable car. The beach is very rocky so you will need shoes if going for a swim. There are showers and toilets. From memory, there is only one restaurant, which seemed quite reasonably priced. There is also a dive center next to the rock.
Tony J — Google review
Absolutely loved our day at this beach! Sunbeds are just €5 per day (you can always stay on the beach for free, but the stones make it less comfortable without one). The restaurant serves delicious sandwiches and fresh seafood, perfect for a quick bite between swims. The ocean itself is fantastic for swimming. At low tide, the water is calm and almost still, while at high tide the waves can get quite strong. I saw a few swimmers struggle to get back out and lifeguards had to step in, so please be mindful of your limits and stay safe.

Stunning Views and Peaceful Atmosphere Cristo Rei in Madeira is a must-visit if you love scenic viewpoints. The statue of Christ the King stands proudly on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and the view is absolutely breathtaking. You can see the ocean stretch endlessly, with the cliffs dropping dramatically below. It’s peaceful, spiritual, and perfect for photos, especially at sunset. Pure magic 🤩🤩🤩🥰!!!

Miradouro do Cristo Rei is definitely worth a visit. The iconic statue actually predates the more famous one in Rio de Janeiro. It’s a great place for a short stop, offering both natural beauty and a touch of history.

A beautiful and special place. Beautiful view on all sides. The large field of cacti leaves an exceptional impression. The beautiful colors of the red-brown cliffs blend with the surrounding greenery, blue sky and clouds. There is no picture that can show this beauty like your own eyes. A unique place.

Pizza restaurant
Italian restaurant
La Carbonara Restaurant offers a fantastic variety of pizzas and pasta dishes that cater to both vegetarians and omnivores. The venue is located near Canico Beach, providing excellent outdoor seating with ocean views, as well as classy indoor seating for those seeking shelter from the wind. The restaurant is within walking distance of resorts and hotels, offering convenient parking options. The staff is known for their amazing service and great attitudes, creating a pleasant atmosphere for diners.
La Carbonara became our go-to spot during the trip – it was only a 5-minute walk from our hotel. The staff were really friendly and welcoming, letting us choose our seats and serving us quickly. There’s a great selection of pasta and pizza, and the steak sandwich is a definite highlight. Staff spoke good English, which made ordering easy. We loved the free poncha shots, salted corn, and peanuts with our meals. Food was very cheap for the quality – excellent value! Plenty of outdoor seating and a big car park too. Highly recommend!

It's a really pleasant place. We had dinner here, pizza and dessert. The pizza was so tasty. I chose oreo cake as a dessert and it was also very delicious. The waiters are kind too! We loved this restaurant so much!

The owner of the B&B we're staying at recommended this Italian restaurant. The food was really good and the portions were huge! We wanted to get some dessert after, but we were way too full.

Don‘t understand the bad reviews. We had salad, Pizza, Pasta and Dessert. All of them were so delicious. Service was great and fast as well. I recommend Spaghetti Al Chef and Spaghetti Camarao. The Tiramisu was great (I am very picky with Tiramisu!), the Maracuja Mousse as well.
Raphael S — Google review
It was mediocre. I’m suprised that this restaurant has a 4+ rating. Looking at the reviews I realise that most people are fawning over the bare minimum. As we sat down we got a peppermint poncha and some nuts. Nothing special for me. I want to know how the food here is. As we order it doesn’t take long till the food arrives which is good. We get the food and we’re rather.. disappointed at the authenticity of the restaurant. As you see in the pictures: My friend took a pizza with supposedly seafood on it, other friend took spaghetti bolognese and I took macaronis with 3 types of cheese. Eventually, on the pizza was literal surimi?! We didn’t expect that, this is no real seafood!! My other friends bolognese was bland and the noodles were overcooked. As for my macaroni, I was also disappointed and felt disgusted after eating. It tasted more like creme than any cheese. It also looked and tasted like they added creme. I didn’t ask for creme i asked for cheese and I’m sure that italians don’t add creme in a dish like that. The worst thing that happened is my mother who ordered CARBONARA. The restaurant’s name, okay? This was utterly ridiculous!! Who adds freaking cream and bacon to carbonara?!! We are all agreeing that carbonara is with egg yolks, cheese and guancale. This is humiliating as a restaurant cooking ITALIAN FOOD! On top of that this dish as their restaurant name?? Won’t be coming back and I hope that other people realise too.

We are very often here for many years as we live nearby. I'm not that big fan of this kind of food, but if you are looking for big portions of fulfilling meal it's a good place to go. They have stable quality and always fresh ingredients (we ate meet at stone, shrimps, fish and so on plenty of times). Service is always very quick and friendly. So no complaints as a long time customer, thanks for your work)

FERRUGEM no Garajau Bistro is an outstanding dining establishment on Madeira Island, offering remarkable cuisine at affordable prices. The service provided by the staff is both cheerful and amicable. The food served here is of exceptional quality and reasonably priced, making it a fantastic value for money. One must try their perfectly cooked beef steak, which undoubtedly stands out. Additionally, the couvert option for 4,50 euros comes highly recommended, particularly the delectable goat cheese with jam.
An absolutely perfect dining experience! The food was absolutely delicious—every dish was bursting with flavor and beautifully presented. The service was top-notch, with friendly and attentive staff who made us feel truly welcome. The restaurant itself was spotless and elegantly arranged, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. To top it all off, the soft, atmospheric music in the background added a perfect touch to the ambiance. Everything was simply ideal—I highly recommend this place and will definitely be coming back!

We arrived when the terrace was full, but the waitress put us at another table to choose from the menu while she was clearing another table so we could still sit on the terrace which was very nice! The food was very tasty, plentiful and rich in flavours. They were out of some options, but the owner of the restaurant was kind to suggest us other things of which he guaranteed the taste. Overall the terrace is super nice, and not too noisy even tough you're located not far from a busy street. When it gets dark, there are a lot of lights on the terrace which helps to the create a lovely dining place. Highly recommend!

We’re visiting Madeira for nine days, and this was hands down one of the best dinners of our trip. My wife absolutely loved it!! the octopus risotto and polvo were outstanding, perfectly cooked and full of flavor, along with several other dishes that left us full! What made the evening even more special was our waitress, Bárbara. She went above and beyond 🤌🏼, she was friendly, attentive, and thoughtful enough to move us to a lovely outdoor table when she noticed we preferred that atmosphere. Between the incredible food and the kind, accommodating service, this place is a must-visit if you’re in Madeira and it near a great location. We’ll be remembering this dinner for a long time 🤤

A wonderful place for dinner and a great way to spend the evening. At the start, the chef personally presents all the fresh dishes of the day – it’s clear that freshness and quality are his top priorities. The food is delicious and perfectly seasoned. Our waitress, Barbara, was charming, funny, and engaging, and she recommended a divine chocolate dessert that we absolutely loved. The fish – always fresh – was outstanding, and the appetizers were equally delightful. Highly recommended!

Exceptional desserts and outstanding service! We had an absolutely wonderful experience at this restaurant! The desserts were truly exceptional - each one showcasing the finest products from Madeira. The quality and creativity were remarkable, and you could really taste the authenticity of the local ingredients in every bite. Discover the wonders of the underwater world with Atalaia Diving Center, a top choice for diving enthusiasts in Madeira. This center offers personalized diving experiences, taking you to some of the best and lesser-known diving spots around Canico. With opportunities to encounter diverse marine life and explore underwater caves, it's an ideal location for recreational diving. The center provides high-quality equipment, including 10-12-15l tanks and new 7mm neoprene suits suitable for lower temperatures.
I've been diving from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean Sea - you will find no better Diving Center - highly professional, extremely well organized and totally focussed on the safety of each and every diver. After a couple of years of diving abstinence I trusted the Atalaia Diving Center to restart this beautiful sport - in the end it was hard to leave as the holiday was over...I totally got caught up on the beauty of every dive. Attached to six very interesting dive spots and a ship wreck, which is reached by a speedboat ride within 35 min (great adventure!), you can experience a lot of varied dives with a very vivid sea-life right in front of the center. I'd like to mention especially the great briefings before every dive (and the de-briefings), the careful gear-up, which is cautiously supervised by the highly motivated diving instructors, and the high level of rent-material quality. I'm definitely going back to this place and try to see the beautiful Eagle Ray again ;) Thank you, Atalaia Team, for this great experience! Hope to see you all soon, Rafa

Atalaia are fantastic! Pedro and the team welcomed our family and made us feel instantly at ease. They showed us around their setup and procedures for cleaning, drying and storing gear which were first class. We all brought our own equipment but they had loads of rental gear that all looked brand new and very well looked after. The facilities are great with large outdoor showers, clean toilets and lots of different seating areas with stunning ocean views. Every dive was proceeded by a full safety briefing, even though we dived 15 times with them they never assumed knowledge and never skipped a briefing which was excellent and felt very safe. A mix of boat dives, night dives and shore dives made the two weeks fly by and kept it really interesting! Each dive was followed by an extensive debrief so we could all discuss what we saw (which was a lot!!) and share our experiences! Dora and Jason took us under their wings and were our main guides. Very friendly and professional and so knowledgeable about everything from the smallest coral to the largest rock formations!! They were really passionate about the ocean and their responsibilities as guides. In a nutshell Atalaia are passionate about the ocean and scuba diving, patient and professional and very lovely people!

We had an amazing experience at this dive center , completing around 10 dives. Despite being busy, everything was incredibly well organized. The guides were top notch, very knowledgeable, and always spotted interesting things underwater. They provided thorough briefings before and after each dive, highlighting what we saw making the whole experience even more enjoyable. The infrastructure is excellent—clean toilets, showers, rinse pools, and spacious areas for briefings with stunning sea views. Booking was easy with great communication, and the prices are fair. You can access multiple dive spots on foot, which is convenient, but they also offer boat trips to fantastic locations like a natural reserve (Garajau) and a wreck. The whole setup is stress-free with a friendly team. Plus, tanks were always properly filled to 200 bar, which shows their attention to detail. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a well-organized and enjoyable diving vacation. We’ll definitely be back!

I just completed my Open Water Diver course at Atalaia Diving Center, and it was an incredible experience! To be honest, I started learning diving because I played a game called The Diving Dave — and it made me curious about the underwater world. At Atalaia, I got to live that dream for real. My instructor Ainhoa was amazing — calm, professional, and super supportive. I tend to panic a little on the surface, but she always reassured me with patience and kindness. Thanks to her, I was able to complete the course smoothly and confidently. During the dives, I saw sea turtles, moray eels, and many other marine creatures — just like in the game! It felt like I was diving inside The Diving Dave itself. 🌊🐢🦑 Thank you so much to the whole Atalaia team for creating such a safe, fun, and memorable learning experience. I’ve got my Open Water certification now — and I’ll definitely be back next year for more adventures! Highly recommend this place to anyone curious about diving — especially if you started from a game like me! — Tongxin Li

Today i successfully completed the Padi open water course at Atalaia Diving Center. First of all, what a great place! The staff is kind and greets you with a big smile on their face. The quality of the equipment is in a great condition. Special thanks to Pedro, who was our instructor the last three days. We were in a small group of three people and really received the attention that we needed. Pedo has a professional attitude and really knows what he’s doing! He explains everything in a joyful way. They can adjust the rate of the course if you encounter any struggles a long the way. So that you can succeed on a comfortable manner! Thanks for getting me exited to dive! 🤿 PS: On our second dive we saw a Caretta caretta 🐢

We did the SSI Open Water Diver course with Atalaia from 29.09-02.10. We booked the course via email in advance and Ainhoa provided us with all necessary details, including access to the SSI App where we could learn the theory beforehand. We never tried diving and thus were unsure what to expect. Ainhoa was our diving instructor and we felt very safe during the whole course. The dive center provides all necessary equipment and makes sure that you feel comfortable at every moment. After the first day filled with theory and training in the pool, we continued to ocean dives at the Atalaia house reef. During the open water dives, we had to complete various training tasks, and had the opportunity to explore the reef under Ainhoa’s guidance. The house reef is beautiful and full of various fish and underwater creatures. Seeing barracudas, moray eels, octopus and many other on the first day in the open ocean - what can be more motivating! Ainhoa is an outstanding teacher, who herself is truly excited about the marine life! Her detailed explanations, attentiveness and calmness together with the friendly atmosphere at the dive center created just the perfect environment and setting. After finished the course, we joined for two fun dives and felt very supported by our dive guides and the team. Michelle and Jason not only guided us through the ocean, but also provided tips to Madeira’s beaches and food we absolutely have to try during our stay (Accomplished ☺️). In these 4 days at the dive center we met amazing fellow divers and everyone was friendly and welcoming us to the community. We left Caniço knowing that we found a new amazing hobby and we definitely will come back to Atalaia to master our skills, do new courses with their outstanding team and explore the marine life of Madeira. Thank you very much Ainhoa, Pedro, Michelle, Jason and the whole Atalaia team! Greetings, Natalia and Pavlo

Everyone at Atalanta Diving Center was so kind, welcoming, and helpful. Couldn’t recommend them more!

In the vicinity lies a pebbly shoreline hosting a modern art display, which conveys the societal framework and emphasizes the need for collective effort to maintain stability. This captivating coastline offers an aesthetically pleasing backdrop that complements the profound concept showcased at this exhibition.
Nearby there’s a rocky beach with the contemporary art exhibition I believe it represents the structure of the society and points out that in order to stay still we need to work together Beautiful coast, beautiful thought…

The visit to the ruins was, unfortunately, underwhelming. Enclosed behind a fence, these remnants of the past stand bare, with no interpretive signs or information to shed light on their historical context. It seems like a missed opportunity to connect visitors with the site's past. The lack of any engaging narrative or description reduces the ruins to little more than an ancient shell, devoid of the stories that could have brought them to life. In this state, they're merely a curiosity without substance—a 1/5 rating feels just, given the disappointment and the potential that clearly went untapped.

Old ruins in a somewhat neglected area, but still fairly interesting. It was close to my hotel, but if you have to make a special trip just to see it – it’s probably not worth it.

Oh boy, this shouldn't even be marked on the map. Ruins on the way down to the beach.

Shame, these ruins in this area are left, simply to become a ruin and forgotten! The area mayor should have a interest of preservation to the area history, its your past but also your history. Lots of old properties covered by no entry and fences. What a sad shame!

Just a big old house, with some walls of stone still standing. The main door and windows, made with vulcanic ashes stones, have some architectural value.

Such a shame this building has fallen into such a state of disrepair. As noted in other reviews there is little to see here apart from perhaps the carved door and window posts. Its main use now appears to be as a home for the many pigeons in this area. No entry fee, no tickets, no wait - you can’t get in!

Garden
The Botanical Garden in Funchal is a must-visit destination, offering stunning panoramic views and a diverse collection of plant species. Located within the grounds of Quinta Splendida Hotel, this garden provides a serene and picturesque setting for leisurely strolls. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of exotic flowers and plants while taking in breathtaking views of the ocean. The entry to this tranquil space is free, making it an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts and those seeking relaxation.
Amazing place in Canico. A bit of climbing to get to the place but absolutely worth it. A great variety of plants from Madera and not only. The man (I don't remember his name) at the reception - very nice and helpful. We visited the garden with the map he gave us.
Joanna T — Google review
A beautiful and relaxing garden with stunning ocean views! 🌿🌺 Quinta Splendida Botanical Garden is part of a hotel, but visitors can enter for a small fee (around €4), which is absolutely worth it. The grounds are filled with a huge variety of plants — from banana trees and exotic flowers to many rare and colorful species that make every corner interesting. The paths are well kept and easy to stroll, with plenty of shady spots under big trees. One of the highlights is the view — from different parts of the garden you can see the sea, which adds to the peaceful and scenic atmosphere. It’s not as large as the main botanical gardens in Funchal, but it feels quieter, more intimate, and just as beautiful in its own way. A great place to enjoy Madeira’s lush plant life, take photos, or simply relax among nature. Perfect for garden lovers, hotel guests, or anyone wanting a calm break with flowers, trees, and ocean views. 🌊🌳✨

Its an off the beaten track garden, part of a very nice hotel, open to visiting tourists. The layout of the complex is unique, the garden has a lot to offer to see, touch, smell. Found by chance as we already visited the "big" two gardens, this was a nice surprise. We spent an hour browsing the paths and ended with a cofee by the pool. Whoever designed the complex did a great job of combining the hotel rooms with nature, in such an unobtrusive blend. Nice end to the holiday. Parking is available nearby on blue lines, underground carpark or supermarket, entry at the time was 4 euros, gladly spent.
Kiril T — Google review
I really loved the garden. It’s not huge but so much variety and was very tranquil walking about. No crowds at all and you fell the love put into the gardens. Only 4 euros and we lounged next to the pool as the sun was shining.

Very pretty gardens and not at all crowded. Nice viewpoint with views over Canico and the Desertas islands. The Japanese style garden was particularly restful. Good value for the 4 Euros admission (you pay at the hotel reception).

To enter the botanical garden, you have to go to the hotel’s main entrance as it is part of the hotel. The entry is free. It is a beautiful space with many exotic flowers and plants, very calm and with the view on the sea. I felt a little uncomfortable strolling around hotel’s cabins though.

PDT- Please Don't Tell is a trendy and accommodating spot located conveniently near accommodations. The service is attentive and the restaurant offers gluten-free options, although some dishes, particularly those with steak, can be on the pricier side. The establishment features a bar at the front with music and snacks, while a classy restaurant at the rear provides superb food and service. Visitors can enjoy a warm and welcoming atmosphere along with great choices of drinks including real ale.
This was the first place me and my boyfriend went to in Madeira, and we were very pleased. Excellent food, generous portions and friendly service. We also tried Madeira wine for the first time which was delicious.

Very disappointed. We went to this place before they did the renovation having a great time. Been looking forward to the return visit now for one and a half years. It would appear that the owner Richard is going beyond his station charging exuberant prices for beer and food, obviously to pay for the works. If I thought he would change less we would return. P D T I'm afraid if you keep up with those prices I'll tell everyone.

What a nice place. Sadly I recognized this bar on my last evening. The food is young, creative snd really yummy. I am vegetarian and it is really difficult to get my food in Portugal. Here I ate pumpkin and a really yummy risotto. The range of long drinks really good. The service and the boss are really nice. Thx, hopefully I will come back next year. I highly recommend this place.

Restaurant and Bar. They serve drinks and Snacks in the Bar, in the back there are tables for dining. The food in the Restaurant was really delicious, small choice of dishes, but really tasty ones (and something different compared to most of the restaurants, no espada and espetada, but pork belly, salmon, Risotto...). And really friendly and nice guys in service and kitchen!

A Traineira is a charming restaurant located in Canico, offering a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The menu features an array of delectable fish and rice dishes, all prepared with fresh ingredients. Guests can also enjoy a delightful terrace for casual dining. Despite its slightly formal ambiance, the staff is friendly and accommodating. The restaurant is known for its well-treated Pesce Espada (scabbard fish) and offers a variety of seafood, fish, and meat options at reasonable prices.
In this restaurant, everything pleasantly surprised us: the waiters were very attentive, always checking if everything was okay. This level of attention really creates a comfortable atmosphere. The portions here are enormous—we've never seen anything so big! Everything was delicious and fresh. And at the end, they gave us a nice treat—a shot of local wine, which was a perfect complement to our evening. Highly recommend!

A perfect spot in Madeira for seafood lovers! This local restaurant is often busy—and for good reason. It’s well worth stopping by to enjoy fresh, locally caught seafood, as well as some excellent meat dishes. The warm, family-run atmosphere adds to the charm and makes the experience feel truly authentic. A must-visit for a taste of Madeira’s local flavors.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at A Traineira in Caniço, and I can't recommend it enough! Even without a reservation, the staff was incredibly accommodating and managed to find us a great table. This level of hospitality set the tone for the entire evening. The food was simply fantastic—delicious, flavorful, and expertly prepared. The prices were very reasonable, offering great value for the high quality of the meal. What truly made our experience special was the exceptional service. The staff was quick, attentive, and very helpful with their recommendations. They truly went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. While there are other dining options nearby, we chose to return to A Traineira because it’s a place that genuinely deserves it. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking for a wonderful meal and outstanding service in Caniço.

Turned up around 8.30 without a reservation, and after an awkward 20 minute wait they managed to seat us inside. As someone new to Madeira not much was explained to us about the menu items and we ended up ordering far too much food for two people. It was all delicious but we hate wasting food and there was a lot of uncertainty about how much everything cost. We ended up spending around 70 euros which was more than we actually planned to spend. We would go back, but now we know to order less and share dishes. Please don’t let this put you off visiting just learn from our mistakes :)

Restaurant
The decision to select Vila Ventura Restaurant for a birthday dinner with a partner turned out to be not the most favorable one. While the service was commendable and the ambiance delightful (resembling a serene garden where vehicular noise is negligible), the quality of food fell short. The majority of fish and seafood options on offer were not locally sourced, resulting in limited choices. Although the grilled vegetables and bread provided delectable flavors, only a solitary local fish appeared fresh.
The food was very delicious and good portions, the fillet mignons were huge, like at least 14oz I'd say, great for the prize. Service and everything was OK, atmosphere and appearance is average.
Osmium O — Google review
We walked by Vila Ventura several times looking down the terrace and it looked nice. Unfortunately, there was only room for us inside where there were no other people. So a bit less atmosphere for us but great anyway. Staff is friendly and service is quick. The food is great and looks very nice. It's a bit expensive compared to other restaurants in the area - probably because it's part of a hotel.
Patrick M — Google review
Fish was very good. Service is average, even bad. I was tried several times to order but everyone looks very busy. When I order beer additional after first order I waited more than 30 minutes and remind twice for it. Overall my experience was good, but took us more time than average and some patience to finalise it with smile :)
Никола Б — Google review
The food is tasty (there are also gluten-free options - grilled fish and vegetables), the garden is really nice, but the service is not good at all. The staff struggles to cover all tables and all orders, please hire more people if you like your restaurant to be more successful!
Tsveti — Google review
The food was great, but be aware that no customizations can be made, ie you can only get the dishes they have on the menu, exactly the way they always make them. The service is very poor, be prepared to have to ask repeatedly for what you’ve ordered. We were even brought something we hadn’t ordered, and they just ignored us when we stated that.
Ivan A — Google review
I picked this place for a birthday dinner with my partner, but it was not the best choice. The service was good and the place looks nice (feels like sitting in a nice garden, you can’t hear the cars passing by at all), but the food was not so good. Most of fish and seafood on the menu was not local, which limited our choices. Grilled vegetables and bread were tasty, the only local fish seemed fresh. However, the risotto was not made with risotto rice, and the sangria was super sweet (tasting more like an artificial syrup than anything else). The place is okay, but I wouldn’t recommend it for a special occasion.
Julia Z — Google review
Older lady waitress who seated us appeared disinterested and.moody. She served people who were seated after us first. We asked her about the local wine and the difference. She was most unhelpful. My husbands mixed grill appeared 30 minutes later and cold. My black scabbard came 20 minutes later once husband had finished his meal. The our cold vegetables arrived. Thenokdsr male waiter apologised and gave us madeira wine. The woman was huffy and wouldn't listed to our feedback. She should not have been working tonight with such an attribute. Food was delicious but service and timings terrible. Will not go back or recommend. No duty of care or respect of customers.

This restaurant, A Gosto, is an incredibly impressive establishment. It was discovered unintentionally, conveniently located near a hotel. The food served here is outstanding and perhaps some of the best that has been experienced in quite some time. The ambiance exudes a modern, pristine, and sophisticated feel. The staff members are all extremely friendly and accommodating. Meeting the owner reveals their immense passion and dedication to this place, evident through the decor and most importantly, the cuisine itself.
Lovely atmosphere amazing service and delicious food!! especially Loved the burgers with fries, red snapper and Shrimps. The veggie burgers patty could have had a more firm texture but other than that great! The stuffed mushrooms were very rich and would probably be better as a starter to share because of being so intense and sweet… :) highly recommend going there!

Absolutely beautiful restaurant, great atmosphere with people all around enjoying themselves, the food was amazing, particularly the Gyozas with attention to detail in all the presentation across the courses. Well done to the whole team👏

The food was OK but nothing very special, not amazingly delicious, it was fine. The portions were a bit small for a main. The main issue was the waiting time. We waited 1 hour for the food and when we arrived & ordered the place was not even busy at all, it was half empty. Hence the 3 stars. Service, atmosphere and everything else was OK. Dessert was delicious (Snickers) but it is served in a way that it looks like excrement/feces. Not too stylish, maybe a bit funny.

This restaurant is a hidden gem! The food is simply outstanding, and we found ourselves returning three times during our stay. We always started with the appetizers, particularly the delicious bread and dips. We tried a variety of dishes from the menu and were consistently impressed. Every bite was a delight! The 5-star rating is well-deserved.

Absolutely amazing restaurant! We happened to stumble on this place by accident as it was right around the corner from our hotel and I’m so glad we did. The food was phenomenal, some of the best food I’ve had in a long while, the decor and atmosphere is very modern, clean and classy. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful, we also met the owner who you can tell is very passionate and dedicated to his establishment and it shows from the decor but most importantly in the food. This is definitely a 5 star restaurant that is a must visit!

The place is small and it was full but luckily there was a free table. The menù offers, meat, fish and 4/5 veg options so can accommodate everyone. We had a beer and a glass of wine. Lamb with mint sponge and smashed violet potatoes it tasted amazing! I had mushrooms ravioli with carbonara sauce, don't expect a classic ravioli plate, it was something unexpected and tasty. We also had a brownie cheesecake as dessert! We spent 47.5€ total, super super reasonable price for such delicious food, you could see in the plats the knowledge, study and passion put in menu and the recipes. The staff super nice and the place small so better to make a reservation! the food doesn't come straight away but totally worth it. Couldn't recommend enough! Thank you guys!

Local government office
Funchal City Hall, housed in a historic palace with late 18th-century architecture, is a must-see in Funchal. The building's original lines have been well-preserved, making it an impressive sight. Visitors commend the council for organizing beautiful Christmas decorations and fireworks to celebrate Funchal's 600-year independence. The friendly and helpful staff add to the positive experience, making it a great place for a leisurely walk and exploration.
Free access to the ground floor of the building where we were allowed to take photos. There was what looked like a guided tour taking place but we just had a wander on our own. A pleasant courtyard with a fountain and benches. Beautiful tiles in the lobby.

This is a government office, so certain characteristics can be anticipated. Generally well organized. three is a numbering system but there are different categories of services served at the same location. The staff is friendly. Not everyone speaks English so if you don't speak Portuguese best to let the receptionist know, or take someone with you. The service is much better when you go there in person rather than when you call. For example if you have a water problem at home and have to call them, they will promise to send someone as soon as possible but they will NOT come. you must call again and again.

This is not about the City Hall building. It is about how certain groups taking lobbying out of control. Share rides are all over EU and UK, but somehow it did not make it to Funchal! Taxi drivers refused to take us short dustances and buses are so crowded that one must wait for the second or third bus! City folks of Funchal - this is pathetic! Fresh food market
The Mercado de Natal, or Christmas Market, in Lisbon and Porto is a lively event offering a wide range of goods from handmade crafts to seasonal delicacies. It's the perfect place for some festive shopping and joyful celebrations. In Praca do Povo, a new addition to the market offers an array of delights including meat and garlic sandwiches, sour cherries, cider, and more.
This was set up for the carnival in February when we were here. Lots of stalls selling food, drink, flowers Ideal location as lots going on here with bands playing and lots of info re carnival activities.

Wine Tours Madeira

Tour agency
Wine Tours Madeira offers a unique experience to explore the history and production of this fortified wine. Unlike port, Madeira undergoes the estufagem process and ages for years before bottling. A visit to Adegas de Sao Francisco provides a glimpse into the aging process with wines dating back to 1860. Blandys Wine Lodge in Funchal offers tours and tastings, allowing visitors to delve into 200 years of Madeira wine history.
We took the Full Day Madeira Wine Tour on 10 January 2025, and it was a great experience. Sampled a lot of nice wines, learned a lot about the wineries and Madeira in general, and enjoyed a lot of scenic and interesting things around the island. Sofia the storyteller was a really great guide!
Stefan K — Google review
Roberto our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable about Madeira and the tour was excellent. He was a great driver. The tour was not able to go to one of the larger wineries as it was a national holiday, but I do think it impacted us from learning about the process and history of wine making on the island. The scenery was breathtakingly beautiful. We highly recommend this tour!
Marilyn P — Google review
We booked this tour on our second day in Madeira. Wouldn’t have found these stops just wandering around. Some amazing chocolate, biscuits and cake! Unreal. The fruit— a real mix of what you know and some surprises too! And the fish dish? Honestly, really surprised, loved it. But it wasn’t just the food. Learning about Madeira, wine and tastings. Robert also filled the day with local stories and cultural gems that gave real heart to the experience. The morning felt more like exploring with a friend than following a guide. If you want a tour that goes beyond the obvious and leaves you full in every way—this is it. Thanks Robert, we had a truly lovely morning and I look forward to coming back. I would definitely do this tour again.

Great way to get an introduction to Funchal and some of the local places of interest, drinks and delicacies. Our guide Matt was very knowledgeable and entertaining, keeping the whole group of 8 of us engaged throughout. Highly recommended 👌

I had such a lovely experience, our tour guide Monica was very knowledgeable about Madeira, along the way she gave us so many information about the island. Also, gave us tips and suggestions in order to make our visit more memorable. Wine tours and lunch was great too. Highly recommended :)
Ece G — Google review
Went on the Eating Madeira! Wine and Food Tour with Matt. Doing this walk early on my trip was especially nice because it gave me a greater appreciation for Madeiran foods, drinks, and culture that was helpful throughout the rest of my trip. The order of the food and drinks was a bit backwards to me - starting with the wines, sweets, and poncha and then ending with the heartier meals. However it did line up with lunch time and the upside was that the tour ended right by the cable cars and transitioned flawlessly into taking a ride up to Monte, visiting the tropical garden, and then taking the toboggans part of the way back to Funchal. It was really easy to fill up a day and check off a lot of items on my to-do list.

We had a fantastic time with wine tours Madeira today. We had a great laugh with Monica who was very friendly and knowledgeable. The wines were delicious and the food great. Although it is dear, it is worth it. Would recommend.
Craig B — Google review
Matt was an outstanding guide - friendly, relaxed and very knowledgeable not just about the food and drink but also all the historical and cultural areas that we asked him about. The tour was extensive and comprehensive and we left with a good knowledge of the local food and drink and no need for lunch! Thoroughly recommended.

Western restaurant
Restaurante Central in Canico offers an impressive selection of meat dishes, including chatreaubriand, skewered chicken, and various steak options. The restaurant's rustic interior adds to its charm, attracting both locals and tourists visiting Madeira. Guests praise the excellent food quality and recommend trying the pepper steak while advising to opt for smaller side portions due to their generous size. Although the New York skyline decor may seem out of place, attentive and friendly service enhances the dining experience at this establishment.
We went to many restaurants but this restaurant AMAZING 😍 Best food ever freshly meat and fish! and very good services if could give this restaurant more than 5 it would be a big 10! If you ever go Madeira please visit this place you won’t be disappointed!

Delicious food and great service. I had the scabbard fish with banana and passion fruit that was recommended by the waiter, it was the best I had during my stay in Madeira. My friends had Espetada and tuna steak and were raving about it. Lots of food and sides.

Coffee shop
Art Food Corner Madeira is a charming café located in downtown Funchal, close to the ocean. The café offers a variety of delightful starters and snacks that showcase the flavors of Madeira cuisine, such as lapas grelhadas and bolo do caco. In addition to their delicious food, they are known for serving amazing coffee and smoothies. The café has a colorful decor with an eclectic, arty vibe and also features unique artwork by local artists.
I went in for a late brunch and couldn’t have made a better choice! I ordered an espresso tonic, a glass of kombucha, and the chicken sandwich—everything was fresh, flavorful, and really well-prepared. Despite the place being packed, my order came out in just a few minutes. Great vibe, fast service, and delicious food!
Kristián S — Google review
Very good food and quantity for the price, they have specialty coffee with a nice variety - v60, filter and brew if i remember well and the taste was good - one could feel the notes quite well. Would’ve loved if the banana bread wasn’t too crumbly but the portion was quite big.
Ioana D — Google review
One of the best cafes in Madeira, it's as simple as that. The food is outstanding, the service excellent and it's stylish as hell. Finally it's also a bargain. The prices could be a lot higher for what comes out of the kitchen here. One of the menu options I recommend is the beetroot humus on artisan toast, which is served with a superb salad and topped with feta cheese and seeds. Flavours are superb. This cafe is a must visit if you're in Madeira.

Artsy place, yummy food, cozy atmosphere.. What else would you need? On the other side there is a store full of beautiful art pieces, postacards, paintings and many more. Perfect for a comfy brunch 🎨

As I am Vegan I heard good things about this place and usually I am not one to leave a bad review but I was quite disappointed by this place. We went to their other location and it was so amazing but this did not compare. We were sitting near the kitchen so we overheard they made a mistake in our order after we were already waiting for 15 - 20 mins and they didn't even inform us. Overall we waited around 25 minutes for an avo toast and a wrap and they were both pretty average, not much taste to them and not very big portion. The juice was really nice but I would recommend their other location over this one.
Flora S — Google review
★★★☆☆ Nice atmosphere, but a few letdowns Art Food Corner has a lovely and well-designed space with a great vibe, definitely the highlight of the visit. Unfortunately, the coffee was average, around 3-star quality, and by 12 pm they still didn’t have any pastries available. It might have been a delivery issue, but it was a bit disappointing. A promising spot with potential, but the experience didn’t fully deliver this time.
Vahid S — Google review
Great breakfast place. Vegan and non vegan options. Nice coffee, good vibes all round. Easy to get to and wheelchair accessible as there’s outside seating.

A great cafe in the heart of Funchal. It's a cozy, clean space where you can admire the art while feasting on a beautiful, delicious dish. The avocado toast and the hummus salad plate are two dishes we tried and recommend, as well as the macchiato. Plus, there's an art gallery/shop located in the back you can check out, which is very fun!

Chocolate shop
UauCacau is not your typical restaurant, but it's a must-visit chocolate shop in Funchal. Founded by master chocolatier Tony Fernandes, this place offers an array of delectable chocolate truffles, cakes, and other sweet treats. With over 40 different flavors inspired by the island's products like banana, mango, passion fruit, and Madeira wine, UauCacau promises a unique culinary experience.
Best chocolate & coffee! We also had good dessert! Definitely recommend!
Maria P — Google review
I’m reviewing the chocolate itself, not the place. The location looks cool and has a chill vibe, but unfortunately, the chocolates were a big letdown. They are overwhelmingly sweet, to the point of being nearly inedible—like biting into pure sugar. Perhaps this level of sweetness is common in Madeira, but it’s worth noting that consuming something this sugary isn’t great for health and could contribute to issues like diabetes. To whoever makes these chocolates: please consider balancing the flavors by keeping the outer chocolate darker and less sweet, with the sweetness concentrated in the filling. In your current recipe, both the outer chocolate and the filling are excessively sweet, which overwhelms the palate.
C. ( — Google review
They have lots of fabulous flavours in this chocolate shop. The chocolate itself is good. Some of the fruity flavours seem to be done with a jelly-like filling rather than a ganache, which has a different texture, but can probably carry more of that flavour.
Robin C — Google review
WOW caucau... That's how you pronounce it and that is how you feel after a visit. Don't miss out on a visit to one of their shops in Funchal. Only issue, they only exist in Funchal 😥 Delicious chocolates, bonbons with even more delicious fillings. A most when in Funchal!!!!!!
Paulo P — Google review
Very disappointing coffee. Nespresso capsules? Really?! Shameful. The chocolates are okay, but definitely not chocolate heaven. Only 2 stars.
Maciej R — Google review
They have only six flavours of ice cream but all of them are really good and the prices are fair. Like on the other ice cream parlours the cone is too fragile and tend to break. The staff is very nice and friendly
Elena C — Google review
Super high quality chocolate with lots of creativity! I highly recommend this place :) They have many flavors to offer. I bought 10 pieces and they all are delicious, my favorite one is the passion fruit. The chocolates are very high value for money. The staff was super friendly and explained to us the flavor, truffles, and price. The store itself is very modern. I will go back for more chocolates for sure!

The lunch menu changes daily, offering a variety of options at great value. With outdoor seating facing the main square, it's an ideal spot to enjoy coffee, cocktails, or a satisfying meal.

Relaxed atmosphere and courteous service. Food is decent so does price. Had ordered beetroot risotto, garlic butter bread and chick wrap with sweet potato crisp. Along with freshly squeezed orange juice and mixed fruit juice. Orange juice was good and that too without ice. So brownie points for that.

This place has a kind of hipster cool vibe. Bright and casual, yet elegant setting. Service is very friendly. I found it perfect for a lunch stop especially if you take the meal of the day. 8€ for the dish, 9.50€ meal+drink. I had Peruvian beef. Portion good sized and flavourful. Beef itself could be softer though.

Visited this place in three different occasions. I have really enjoyed it for a cold beer and some snacks in the late afternoon. When I went there for lunch, I’ve ordered the sandwich with beef which was amazing, however I found the chips not very crisp and my friend did not really enjoy the vegetarian burger. Finally, this place had a pretty amazing band playing one night and lots of young people were attending and enjoying the good vibes
