Specialty Museums
The Deutsches Edelsteinmuseum, located at Haupstrasse 118, is a sleek space showcasing gemstones and minerals sourced globally. With over 9000 displays spread across three floors, the museum offers insights into crafting techniques and features a fascinating fluorescence room. Visitors can explore the art of carving stones and gems while admiring beautiful statues of creatures. The museum also provides an opportunity to purchase unique items related to stones, gems, and statues.
This museum is really well done! The exhibits are both beautiful and interesting with gemstones and minerals from around the world by famous artists in this genre. We easily spent 2 hours here for a place that is not all that large. Loved it!
Marian S — Google review
After buying the entrance ticket, the kids received a small stone..this was so friendly of the receptionist. So much beauty and awe at one place. Learnt so much about agate and gemstone. After the visit to the museum, we passed by the gift shop and bought some souvenirs. The visit was totally worth it!
Victoria N — Google review
A good museum with 3 floors of gemstones. The pieces are well described and there are some unique gems too. There are 2 different puzzle tracks for kids. Those make the visit for them more interesting. There is one with finding numbers and one with finding letters. Both were a bit challenging for a 6 year old. They have a Audio Guide that you can download but a QR- code at the entrance would promote it more
Claudia A — Google review
very nice and interesting place. you can find there a lots of edelsteine from all over the world. also the museum shop is very tempting
Maruška M — Google review
We truly enjoyed this beautiful museum and the variety and wealth of gemstones they had on display. The variety and variance was stunning, we couldn't get over how beautiful some of the stones were. The staff was very friendly and helpful and we definitely recommend a visit!
The P — Google review
This museum was one of the most beautiful I have seen. There was a lot to learn about how they carved all the stones and gems and who invented it. There are really beautiful stones and statues of creatures (as you can see in the pictures). The employees are very nice and helped you if needed. There are a lot of cool things you can buy in the store! This is a really good place to go if you love stones, gems and statues!
Ynke D — Google review
My daughter brought stones home in here pockets as a kid. So, even being in her 40's she loved the museum! It has some amazing gem work and historical facts on the gem business of the region.

Very nice museum with unique and interesting pieces. The shop is quite overpriced.

The Historische Weiherschleife museum and restaurant offer a fascinating experience. The museum showcases the functioning of various historical processes, including the preparation of food on a wood-burning grill in its original form. The tour provides unexpected insights into the laborious journey from mining geodes to crafting exquisite jewelry. Both the mine and mill can be visited in one day, telling an engaging story.
This complex has a mine museum with tours a man-made lake, a playground, and a restaurant. We ate at the brewery. The food was excellent, service was good. One staff member spoke English well and helped us. You can walk around the grounds which include a small man-made lake and a playground. It seems to also be used as a private event venue. There’s plenty of parking. You can see the complex from the road above, the parking lot is just below the road.
Nikki ( — Google review
The tour is awesome, much more than I expected. Another insight in the amount of manual labour it took to get from a geode hidden in a mountain to a jewel around a neck. Visiting both the mine and the mill are easy to do in one day and it tells a compelling story.
Henri F — Google review
Good to understand how these gemstones where processed in the past before all automation came in. Just be aware that the guide only explains in German and so you may not understand anything if you do not understand German. But can see all the tools and make a guess on how it worked.
Latha S — Google review
Really great tour, informative and even partly in Dutch.
DiM T — Google review
This museum and restaurant are a good place to be. it is a working museum where during the tour they show how it funtioned. food is good. some dishes are taking longer to prepare on the wood burned grill as they are prepared in the original way. 100% worth the wait.

We took a tour to see the waterwheel-powered stone polishing workshop. It's very informative. We saw how they used to work. This is a large area. With a small lake, restaurant, and a shop selling jewelleries and other souvenirs.

The mill tour is really great! Price is good with family Card. Be sure to take a ride in the pedal boats on the pond.

I lived on Strassburg Kaserne about 30 years ago, and I wandered here while exploring one day. I was fascinated by this place and very grateful that I was allowed to look around. I remember seeing a lot of amethyst in rock form.

We found great vegan food in this cozy place. Unfortunately not enough vegan options but we had a good lunch. Unfortunately tap water is limited to 1 glass per person.

Bunch of Bikers trip whonwere staying across the road happened upon this place for dinner. Staff were great and their english was better than my german and very friendly. Schnitzel was out of this world and washed down with a few Bavarian lagers. The strudel and ice cream was divine. We will be back!

Busy time but staff were polite and friendly. Beer and food good.

We had curry wurst (3) and strammer max (2). The wurst war Guten, aber Der Strammer Max nicht. The eggs were fried way to hard, to the point where the egg-white was turned to plastic. Definitely not what we expected from German cooking.
Harry D — Google review
Nice, large restaurant. Not fancy but comfortable. They have vegetarian/vegan food menu section which is great. Lots of outdoor seating for the warmer months.
Aprajita J — Google review
Nice atmosphere. Part of my dish was extremely salty (french fries). I had a Milano Schnitzel. Fair price.
Margret S — Google review
Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience here and felt singled out and discriminated against for not speaking German. My friend (who speaks German) had made a reservation and I had come early asking for the reservation. The waitress who was blonde with tattoos on her right arm promptly dismissed me saying that they only speak German. Later when my friend came, the waitress only spoke through my friend who speaks German and never addressed me directly for what I wanted. I have no doubt that the other staff is welcoming and friendly. However, I do not recommend any non-German speaking people to come and eat at this establishment for as long as that waitress works here due to the hostile environment she creates.

Awesome place. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I consider them family because I go very often. A great place to grab a beer, food, salsa dancing, or sing karaoke.

I really enjoyed touring this cave! It was a nice treat and the workers were super nice! It was so cool seeing the crystals and cool rock formations inside the cave and the cool lights that reflected on the water and walls. You can’t beat a cave tour for $8 and the hike down to the cave was nice and relaxing. Definitely purchase tickets in advance!
Ms. K — Google review
Nice tour. Pre-record English headset available. Bathrooms available. Some snacks in the gift shop. Tried the digging afterwards but did not find much... Just some small amathist. No biggie, I will just cheat and buy something at the gift shop... Except nothing in the gift shop is actually from the mine. Big disappointment. I like buying rocks from the places I have been.
Virginia M — Google review
Worth the visit if you’re in the area. They have an app you can download to be able to listen to the tour in other languages so if you don’t know German, bring your own headphones! (And there’s WiFi available) Our tour guide was a bit too long winded and my three year old started to get very restless but he made it through. Do not forget to make a reservation/buy your timed tickets online!!
Kelly M — Google review
This was really fun for everyone. The tour guide was interactive with the children, asking them questions and telling stories. The mine itself is amazing to get to tour. There is a little shop at the entrance where you can buy stones of course but they also have food and drink. We did have one problem, I purchased tickets for my children to dig in the sand pit and for some reason the man supervising wouldn't let us in. First he told me that I was in the wrong place and needed to go to the parking lot. This was clearly a lie so I had my husband go and try to take them and he wouldn't let them in then either even though we had tickets and were definitely in the right place. Any way if it weren't for this I would give it five stars.
Stephanie K — Google review
The kids really enjoyed it. We only got to do the basic dig where they throw out gems and the kids go free for all and get as many gems as possible. Everything else was sold out for the 12:30pm time slot. They still really enjoyed it and left with plenty of gemstones.
Alexis G — Google review
NOT easy if you have walking difficulties. A warning when I bought tickets would be nice. My brother visiting from Florida and my wife have physical difficulties and qe had to abandon our prepurchased tickets. "You have to purchase your tickets ahead of time. Oh, didn't know about the steep walk? Too bad for you, we already have your money."
Inyobill — Google review
There is a bit of an uphill hike to get there, but it is really worth it. There are a lot of Chrystal's in the mine and nothing is fake. They have been there for millions of years and are staying since the mine closed in 1875.
Kjell K — Google review
Make sure to buy your tickets a week in advance. This is a popular location with limited guided tours per day. The inside of the mine is well lit and stroller friendly.

First time eating at this Restaurant. I can only say good things about this Place and the Staff. The place is cosey, the food is fresh and very tasty. The Staff and Owner make sure you are feeling welcome there and satisfied with everything. Good vibe throughout the entire evening. Keep up the good work!

If you are looking for a great time to walk your dogs or go for a family stroll then sit down to eat some authentic German food this place is it. Will definitely be coming back soon.
CJ N — Google review
As with all the food that we had in Germany it was tasty, served proudly, and heartily. I got schnitzel with red bell peppers and a sauce which is not normally how it is prepared but it was excellent! My husband got some form of spätzle and it was excellent too. Staff was helpful and one spoke English quite well, there was no issue with making our needs known or met. It was a lovely day so we ate outside and there was lots of seating. There’s plenty of parking. The rest of the grounds are the mine museum, playground and man-made lake. Entrance to the restaurant and the path were ADA accessible.
Nikki ( — Google review
The only problem is there is too much food on the plate and it's hard to control yourself. Food from the grill is amazing you can taste the smoke. The restaurant deserves way more than 4.5 rating in Google. Thomas, the owner is really friendly and his attitude is contagious to the rest of the staff. Thank you for the great experience.
Ruben H — Google review
We had a group dinner outing here at the Weiher Schleife (about 20 people, mix of locals and American visitors). The staff was so lovely and accomodating. The restaurant is clean and traditional. And the food was simply superb. Excellent grill plates, beautiful and colorful salads, and cold beers. One of our American friends enjoyed her Spießbraten so much that she returned again for lunch the next day!
Gabrielle S — Google review
This place has a great atmosphere and wonderful food. Our kids loved the playground, and we enjoyed being able to watch them from the patio.
Harrison J — Google review
The place are beautiful, waitress is kind. But the portion of "Spießbraten" was really really really small if to compare with other restaurants near here. Almost no potato, and a little bit of meat for 12,50€. And for this small portion we needed to wait around 30-40 minutes. Will never eat here again, but it is good place to drink a coffee with a cake, because of the place. But not to eat there.
Katerina K — Google review
The restaurant is in a good position, and when ita sunny you can enjoy the day! The waiters are really kind and friendly, but the owner (?? - black hair and glasses) is so rude and unfriendly with all!! (Waiters and customers- such a disrespectfull woman!!!) If you wanna be angry and pisst off go there!

I rated highly because each staff were very friendly and smiling! We went there as 5 people with reservation. We dine in. They check on our table often. I ordered chicken breast with lemon and herb butter, rice and salad. It was absolutely delicious. We sat outside, spent time almost three hours. Atmosphere was amazing. The location of the restaurant is so easy!

Awesome late lunch here with my family (parents and two sisters) and it was everything we wanted. Between the 5 of us we ordered the pork loin (x2) and the beef loin(x2), fries, and potato salad, the main dishes came with shredded radish salad. The meat was tender and perfectly cooked. We were hard pressed to think of a better preparation. Sabine took excellent care of us. We all left full and happy.

We had lunch here yesterday and the food was absolutely delicious. It did not matter what we ordered, every meal was outstanding. But I must say, the beef spiess burger was exceptional. If I ever return, I will definitely have a steak.

I learned about the Speißbratenhaus from an acquaintance last summer. I was excited to finally visit, and it did not disappoint. First, I have to say the staff were all very kind and patient with me as we had to, unfortunately, change the date/time of our reservation. The restaurant itself is incredibly charming with lots of outdoor seating. We loved our table, and being able to watch the grill. The mixed green salad was delicious and fresh. I do recommend coming with an appetite, and with some patience because the food does take some time to prepare on the grill. It is so worth the wait, though! We loved our experience!

Spiesbraten to die for Every time when I am over in the area I go there with friends and or family. Great steaks grilled on open fire, tasty marinated. Outside on the terrace tonight. Inside in the winter upstairs. Friendly hearty rustic service with a great banter. Always honest. The place to go when u are in the area. I love it. It's a truly indigenous and tasty experience
Kai S — Google review
Friendly staff and a cool spot to grab a steak. It did take a while to get our steaks. So plan for a long lunch or dinner. Close by to a parking lot with a kiosk to pay.

EDIT: their response says it all. Guess where this photo was taken :-) EDIT 2: first you basically accuse me of being a liar that ‘I wasn’t in your restaurant’. Now the photo is too old. What else? My family has come here for years but never again. The older lady overcharged us by 30% and had the audacity to accept a tip on top of that. When we asked for a bill because the amount seemed higher than usual: our total magically changed to the regular price. No apologies or money back. Disgraceful. The Italian restaurant next door serves amazing schnitzels and serves them with a smile (and a proper bill). Fully recommend!

On a Saturday evening, tourists can enjoy a pleasant stroll through the charming Marktplatz, despite some establishments being closed. Although one restaurant recently shut down after operating for 57 years, it is disheartening to witness such closures during these challenging times. Nevertheless, the Marktplatz remains an excellent destination for visitors to explore. The square offers several open restaurants that cater to diverse tastes and are available throughout the night. Overall, it is a highly recommended tourist attraction worth visiting.

The Deutsches Mineralienmuseum is an impressive stop for museum enthusiasts. With a reasonable entrance fee of 7 euros, visitors can explore four floors filled with gemstones, precious minerals, fossils, and intricately carved stone pieces from around the globe. In addition to the actual specimens, stamp collectors will find framed stamps depicting minerals and gemstones alongside their real counterparts. The museum also houses a stunning collection of amber objects ranging from small pins to breathtaking necklaces on display in a magnificent room.
The museum is rather large and definitely worth a visit. There are thousands of geodes and great pieces of geology to study. There are also crowns, jewels, and artifacts to look at as well. Overall a must do for Idar-Oberstein!

This place has a room with huge examples of various gemstones and minerals and some beautiful exhibits. The wheel outside is very famous in gemology circles and there is a room you can go in and look at the other side of it, and read about it. That said, it seems a little dusty for a museum and lighting on the exhibitions could be better. If you don’t read German you are out of luck.

To all gems and stone lovers. You can have stunning views of all the gemstones and machines in the old times used in crafting them. You can go around knowing its stone and history plus you can buy souvenirs. This is also near the Church and coffee shops. Idar Oberstein is the birth place of famous actor Bruce Willis.

Large collection house over several floors. Although area is famous for gems and minerals a lot of the examples come from South America.

The Felsenkirche, a small church with a rich history, is nestled within the face of a rocky hill. Its exterior stands out amidst the rocks, while the entrance can be found through a cave-like tunnel. The interior of the church is also carved into the rock, creating an awe-inspiring sight. Perched above the city of Idar-Oberstein, this hidden gem boasts a cross made from precious stones, showcasing the town's renowned craftsmanship.
If you like history and ancient buildings this is a great place to go, a church that at the very beginning of the construction it was a castle. When you are inside you are able to see how some of the walls are just rock of the mountain. Very interesting place with an amazing story. We had an excellent guide that explained every single corner of the place. The tour was made in German and one of our friends translated in to English. I didn’t ask if they offer a tour in English but I think it should be possible. The best way to go inside is to order a tour, is nothing expensive but you need to consider that is at least for 8 people.
Nacho C — Google review
It was enjoyable to see the church. So impressive that it is built into the rock. We were bummed to find out that the opening hours that are listed on Google are only in conjunction with having tickets for a tour. There is a nice trail to walk up above the church to look at the ruins.

Just an amazing view. You can visit the church by a guided tour only. Our guide Mr. Becker was great - we were alone with him in the church which was a very special experience.

Amazing church carved directly into the rock face. A bit of a walk to get to it. A small spring is inside. Interesting story behind this church. Beautiful view from inside and above. Castle ruin nearby. No parking at the church but plenty in the village. Well worth the trip if you are in the area.

Ancient Ruins
Burg Bosselstein, a beautifully renovated historical landmark, offers a stunning panorama of the town. From its windows and especially through the hole in the original toilet, one can admire an awe-inspiring view into the depths. This small ruin of a castle or tower provides visitors with an exquisite vantage point to appreciate the surrounding area. The sight is characterized by its breathtaking perspective and serves as a testament to the rich history that this remarkable structure holds.
(Translated by Google) Unfortunately it's just a ruin, but thanks to some information boards you can get a good overview of exactly where things once were. The special thing about this castle is that it even had two outer baileys. The western and eastern baileys. There is now a war memorial in the area of the former western outer bailey. In the area of the former eastern outer bailey, a free area with some benches. The path to the castle itself is very exciting, narrow paths lead you slowly but surely through a forest to the castle. Shortly before we cross a narrow bridge, we can see some remains of walls on the side of the path, which were part of the gate system at that time. After the bridge we come to the area of the main castle. There are remains of walls and a castle tower to be seen here. In addition to the information boards just mentioned, there are also wonderful views to enjoy here.

Italian restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Idar-Oberstein, Al Castello is a charming Italian eatery that promises a delightful culinary experience. Guests rave about the delicious tiramisu and tartufo, which are must-tries on the menu. The friendly service adds to the warm atmosphere, with quick delivery of starters even during busy times. Patrons appreciate the personal touch from the owner, who offers daily specials and even prepares fresh zabaglione upon request.
THE best Italian restaurant in Germany!! A hidden treasure with amazing food and friendly staff! You always feel at home eating here. Beautiful views of the town square. Cozy vibes in the winter and relaxing vibes during the spring and summer. I crave their pasta at least once a month! If you are in the area you HAVE to go.

The service was excellent and the staff very friendly, no complaints there. We ordered three tomato soups which were delicious. However, the main courses were a disaster. My father-in-law ordered veal in mushroom sauce with pasta and got fries instead. My husband and I ordered salmon and were served a white fish, and the waiter insisted it was salmon! After explaining that it clearly wasn’t salmon, he admitted we were right and asked if we wanted the “real” salmon to go. On the bill, we were charged for bread we never asked for; it was just brought to the table, so we assumed it was complimentary. We also didn’t get the salmon to go as compensation. The restaurant is beautiful and some dishes are good, but overall we felt cheated. If you order salmon, make sure it’s the real one.

Discovered this little gem near closing time - turned down for dinner at nearby place, & the owner here gave welcome, apologizng that all he could serve was "a good pasta dish" (due to the hour.) Respected my allergies & served up a nice pesto pasta with salmon. Came back soon after to try the pizza - very good - the service is welcoming & pleasant. Enjoyed the outdoor setting & the background live (quiet) music. Back a 3rd time - veggie pizza - yum! Good ambiance, good food, good prices, good music. Hmmm... what to do for Sunday dinner...?

The food was great! The owner was very sweet, attentive and welcoming. After eating, he offered us cup of cappuccino unfortunately, we were in a hurry since our parking time was almost over, 😅 if not, we would have definitely stayed longer. I really recommend coming here for a good bite to eat. Definitely coming back!

The Italian owner is passionate and friendly. The Jägerschnizel is a little bit too oily. I like more what is cooked in Tirol region, with a more luscious mushroom gravy.
