The Citadel of Bitche is a 17th-century fortress located in the charming French city of Bitche. The citadel features a chapel and a museum that focuses on the 1870 Franco-Prussian war, offering visitors an immersive experience into the historical events. Inside the ramparts, guided tours lead small groups through rooms where the history of the siege of Bitche is explained, accompanied by videos depicting key figures and events from that time.
Great way to spend part of the day. Beautiful view of the area. Town is very friendly to tourists. The citadel is huge with a cool story from the was in 1870. Head phones for a tour with multiple languages including English.

The Citadel of Bitche is an impressive sight perched above the quiet town in northeastern France. With its massive stone walls and commanding views, it tells the story of a town that has withstood centuries of conflict. Though less famous than other French fortresses like the Citadel of Carcassonne, Bitche still offers a solid, if more understated, experience for history lovers. Unlike Carcassonne, which is packed with shops, medieval streets, and a castle-like atmosphere, Bitche’s citadel leans more toward a focused historical visit. There’s a multimedia experience inside that takes you through the sieges and military importance of the site, and it’s well done; perhaps not as extensive or immersive as some might expect. Facilities are modest but convenient. There’s a small gift shop and a café for a snack or coffee after your visit, and parking is no problem at all. There’s plenty of space, including designated spots for camper vans, making it a great stop for road trippers exploring the region. While it may not be a full-day destination like some of France’s better-known citadels, the Citadel of Bitche has a unique, quiet charm. It’s a worthwhile detour if you’re nearby and interested in military history or off-the-beaten-path landmarks. Just come with measured expectations and you’ll find a well-preserved monument with stunning views and a dose of French history without the crowds.
AGladers — Google review
Interesting history inside, but particularly loved the garden of peace outside (additional entrance fee of 3 Euros) which was a joy to be in on a sunny day.

Nice stop while camping nearby. There is a tour with audio option available which is roughly two hours. Fantastic structure.
David J — Google review
The citadel is very nice, historical place with nice panoramic views from the citadel and to view Bitche city from above
Johan B — Google review
I would like to give it four stars or more because it really was thrilling. However, it was scary and the woman at the ticket office did not help me very much It was so long of walk up on slippery cobblestones so be careful. I was a bit afraid of slipping, because I am older. Also, the fort is huge and you walk through rooms in the dark fortunately, there is another room and another room. When I got to the end a woman made me a good panini. But be careful if you ask for a glass of water and your French isn’t good. She offered. L’eau de Mirable which is a Schnapps!
L S — Google review
A remarkable place. On a fine and clear day you can enjoy fantastic views from up there, even as far as the Black forest in Germany. The war-torn history of the citadel can be relived during a tour of the interior, with various episodes presented on film in various rooms within the citadel. Headphones for the tour are available in several languages.
P. H — Google review
Citadel was cool to see. The audio tour was kind of disappointing - it’s more of walking while watching a movie. There’s no background given so unless you know the history it can be confusing. The grounds are nice - we finished the tour too late so we were unable to check out the gift shop or cafe.

The charming Espace Mémoire WW2 in Bitche, situated at the Porte de Strasbourg, is a delightful attraction. It houses the Museum of the Liberation of the City during World War II and comes highly recommended for visitors to the city.
Extraordinary collection of relics, documents, and books related to the 100th Division. A must-visit for anyone interested in the Battle of Bitche and the experience of American GI's in this part of France during the later days of WWII. Run by an incredible couple with extraordinary knowledge of the war. Recommend inquiring at the Town Hall next door if space does not seem open.

Nestled on a rocky outcrop, the Château de Waldeck stands as a hauntingly beautiful reminder of its medieval past. Although it was dismantled during the Thirty Years War and remains in ruins, this enchanting site offers breathtaking views that are well worth the trek. Great little kebab style cafeteria. Friendly service. Good food. Tip for Americans: their “burger” is a pita with a beef patty, and their “taco” is a burrito with French fries inside. Definitely go for the “taco” over the “burger” and the pizza also looked delicious.

Not often that I give a 5 star rating but le Strasbourg has earned it. Diner there has been a real treat, every course of our 3 course day menu was more then perfect and the 5 (or was it 6?) amuses in between made the evening into an unexpected feast. Ouvrage du Simserhof, part of the Maginot Line near Bitche, is an extensive underground fortress designed to provide artillery support for nearby defensive works. The tour includes a 10-minute historical presentation before exploring the combat blocks linked by an electric tramway system. Visitors can witness functioning ventilation and engines while experiencing loud noises during the guided tour. English, French, and German language tours are available for a fee of 10 euros.
I enjoyed a great tour this morning. The guide was very informative about fort. I appreciated the depth of knowledge and details. The engineering marvel of planning.

I wish the guide was more interested in the tour he gives us. Sorry I was disappointed. Expected more stories historie than facts I could read on the panels.

It's nice, but it's COLD. Make sure to pack an extra jacket or a sweater. Do not underestimate it, it's like being in a really big freezer. The tour is quite nice though, it's really in depth! There are some stairs which you need to conquer but I think they also have a wheelchair accessible route! Would recommend.
Berend — Google review
From the people running the visitor centre to the guys conducting the tour, it was excellent. The walk up to the entrance is quite arduous for us oldies and then you have to walk down wet stairs, to get to the tunnels. The tour takes quite a while and is a fair bit of walking. Loud noises abound as some of the ventilation and engines still work, and they are demonstrated! Super interesting, a unique experience. The English tour was at 1500, French and German language tours are also available.

Amazing glimpse into the Magniot Line fortifications - the bunker system is incredibly well preserved and huge in scope! The 3 hour tour is great value at 12 euros, although if you want it in English you have to book ahead (I jumped on a German tour but knowing some WW2 background helped me understand most of it through context). Bring something to keep you or kids warm as it's about 9 Celsius in the bunker and you quickly chill! Info in English is essentially nonexistent, but to see some of the above-ground structures and tank/infantry defences you'll need to follow the red and green trails (no charge). I just drove slightly north and parked on the E85 road which has easier access - you can't miss the tank defences! All-in-all a great attraction and great value - I highly recommended the tour.

(Translated by Google) This was our first visit. The staff was very friendly, which is why I'm sorry to give it a bad rating. However, it was a big disappointment. Since my son is under 6, we bought tickets to the park without the treetop adventure course. I found the activities offered uninteresting (e.g., the mazes, the bouncy castle, etc.) and, above all, insufficient. In fact, two of them were under construction. I also found the structures poorly maintained. I found the value for money poor: 20 euros for an adult and 15 euros for a child for so little. Compared to Drachenbronn, where you can have hours of fun on the fun courses for 8.50 euros per person, I feel very disappointed. The treetop adventure course may be good, but it's also a shame that there are no courses for children under 6, and the price is also high, compared to, for example, Brumath, where there are eight children's courses. In the end, we traveled quite a bit to discover something we didn't know, but we were disappointed.

Very nice

Good food and prices, but if you don’t have a reservation, you won’t get a table by the window. Instead, we’ve got a table at a tiny back part with no view etc. even if there weren’t that much guests around.

Location and ambience was very nice but the food was just plain boring nothing special.

nice place but food tastes a bit like frozen food. in the evening, there are also a few mosquitoes - be prepared.

(Translated by Google) The food was good and beautifully presented. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the wine. We sat outside in the tent, which was very pleasant as it was a bit chilly that day. Unfortunately, the bread we received beforehand was old/dry. The playground near the water was great fun for our 6-year-old daughter. The lake itself is also very beautiful. All in all, a good place for a bite to eat.

(Translated by Google) Passing through for dinner with family (10 people staying in the VVF across the street), we had a great time... The server was very friendly, the location is pretty, the lake and the wooded surroundings create a beautiful setting. The food isn't the best, but overall, we had a good meal. The pizza crusts are quite thin, but the dishes are largely acceptable. The whipped cream is a bit bland... Easy and free parking.

Restaurant
Aux gourmand'10 is an attractive and delightful establishment with a distinctive interior. Despite nearing closing time, they graciously remained open for customers. The owner was exceptionally amiable, while another waiter may have lacked the same level of enthusiasm (although it should be noted that she worked diligently to keep the restaurant functioning during closing hours). One notable aspect of this place is that dogs are allowed indoors and water is provided for them.
Beautiful restaurant with amazing food. We were a group of 9, with no reservations and entered quite late. Most of us had dietary restrictions and yet this might have been an unforgettable meal for most of us for a long time. Service : was amazing. Simone waited on us, patiently explained all the dishes in multiple languages and waited for us to make a choice. She knew what we wanted to eat by the shine in our eyes and the drool in our mouths as she was describing the dishes. Samia was also helpful and very warm. Food : was mindblowing. I ordered the slow cooked lamb and vegetables. Chicken and Salmon with Pasta dishes were also quite amazing. Dessert was as tasty as the main course. Cake and Icecream combo was very special, but the Creme Brulee was on another level. The selection of beers was quite surprising and perfect. Simone also whipped out homemade Schnapps for us, which were also quite nice. Vibe: of the restaurant is quite warm and comfy. All in all, none of us is going to forget that meal anytime soon.

Nice charming place with a characteristic interior. Even thought they were closing, they kept it open for us. The owner was extremely friendly , other waiter was a bit less enthusiastic (in her defence, we kept the restaurant open during closing time). Dogs are accepted inside and water was offered. ‘Limited’ , simple menu that guarantees fresh ingredients with various options (meat - fish - (vegetarian)). Generous portions. Advised if you want a good quality ‘bistro’ - no unique dishes, bit everything (that we took) was well prepared and of good value for money.

Where do I even begin?! First of all, owner and creator, Simone, is worth the visit itself! She is kind, helpful, and talented. We visited the restaurant for dinner and were treated to the loveliest meal. Simone had just gotten an order from Italy of all things truffle and boy, did we get a delicious meal out of it! We started with a delicious charcuterie plate made of various meats and cheeses (all extraordinary...and at an incredible price). Then, we each got delicious meals. My sister and cousin both got different risottos while I received the final order of lamb shank available. EVERYTHING was fresh, delicious, and memorable. The restaurant was beautifully decorated and we would recommend this restaurant to all! Thanks for everything, Simone. We will see you again!

I was taken there by a good friend, and it is such a lovely place, from the decoration, the ambiance and how kindly we were welcomed to the delicious food! Wonderful! The food is made from scratch and the ingredients are so fresh! We had the opportunity of talking to the chef, who offered us her input and suggestions. This place is a hidden gem! I absolutely loved it! And im planning on going back!

Amazing customer service! The waitress was super helpful and patient with us! She took the time to go over the menu with us and explained each dish. The food was really delicious too! Got the frog legs and lamb shank. Highly recommend this place to anyone in the area.
