Specialty Museums
Nestled in the picturesque village of Newtonmore, the Highland Folk Museum offers a captivating glimpse into the lives of Scottish Highlanders from the 1700s to the 1960s. This immersive living museum features over 30 meticulously crafted replica buildings and period artifacts that showcase traditional domestic routines. Visitors can witness actors dressed in ancestral attire as they demonstrate daily life, farming practices, and old-fashioned entertainment.
The museum is free of charge. However, car parking costs £2 which supports the running cost of the barn, and you can contribute donation if you want to. The museum and barn are lovely, lots of animals, interesting facts about the past, history, benches to do picnic, cafeteria is on site too with the bathroom. It's worth visiting and supporting local businesses. The gift shop is a must to visit. I loved it 😍

Very interesting snapshot of many aspects of Scottish life through the ages up to the 1940s I'd say. Lovely walk through the woods to the start of the timeline showing turf and heather housing. Allow a couple of hours to see the whole site. Nice little cafe with reasonable prices. No entry fee but donations encouraged, or buy the very informative guidebook for £5 and hand back in when you leave for someone else to buy.
Helen N — Google review
Another wonderful place to stop off and learn about Scotland. Yes, you will have to compete with the loads of buses that appear in mid-morning, so I'd recommend getting there as soon as they open. As you can see in the pictures, there are quite a few buildings to check out, but what they don't show you is how large the site is. Just keep that in mind when you go there, and budget some time in to enjoy it. The day we got there, it was threatening rain or raining at times, so the paths became a bit slippery for my wife's power wheelchair. The paths themselves were good for the most part, but note that quite a lot of it is unpaved and can sometimes be bumpy.

We absolutely loved our visit. As a family of 4 there was plenty for us to explore. Children's playground, cafe, gift shop and toilets great. Entry and carpark is free but you are welcome to leave a donation - you will want to once you experience this place. The staff are very welcoming and very informative, it's clear they love their jobs. We bought a brochure (£5) which was very Informative and great to use alongside exploring the old villages. Sweet shop was super. A must see to get an insight into the history of the highlands! Just what we wanted on our trip to Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Absolutely fantastic historical village with much to see and do for the whole family. We particularly enjoyed the Highland Cows and the mock lesson in the School house. The coffee from the cafe was amazing. Highly recommend. Free entry, you only pay for parking. You can make a voluntary donation, which I think you’ll see is warranted.
Lydia — Google review
We mainly stopped as we heard they had highland cows and wanted to see them. We were surprised by how much there was to see and all for free! So we ended up staying for much longer than anticipated and checked out all of the buildings etc. The teens enjoyed the working sweet shop the most. The staff were all really friendly. We made a donation at the end as it was so worth while.
Laura D — Google review
A lot bigger than we expected! Was definitely worth going and we all enjoyed. Very friendly staff. Visit to the old fashioned sweetie shop is a must - it's not open every day so worth checking on the website. School was also a highlight, make sure you ask to practice your handwriting with the fountain pen. Dogs on short leads welcome but not able to go in any of the buildings so we swapped out people holding the dog. The dog really enjoyed the walk through the woodlands.

Whether it's conquering fears during gorge scrambling or enjoying the adrenaline rush of canyoning, the instructors provide expert guidance and ensure a safe yet exhilarating experience.
As a solo traveller, I completed the great glen canoe trail in a kayak. Our guide, Barney was excellent. The other guys on the tour all worked well together, and we had a great trip. I was provided with dry bags and a roll mat and a working boat, paddles and a neoprene spray deck.

We booked a family White Water Rafting experience for May when we were going to be spending a week in Aviemore on holiday. I was a bit worried about what to expect as there had been no rain for weeks leading up to the holiday, and kept wondering if the experience would be cancelled, thankfully it wasn't. The email provided had all the information needed and the guidance on where to meet for pick up was really clear. I'd have a couple of questions leading up to the experience and they were always answered promptly and clearly. Paul & Leon who met us were really friendly/knowledgeable instructors. As there hadn't been enough water and the river was quite low, they took us to a stretch of the river that still had some rapids and we used 2 rafts instead of the one as there was less chance of it getting stuck. I was so relieved when Paul & Leon went with us on each raft as I had never used one before! They made the whole experience great fun and it is such a beautiful area. My 2 sons (11&12) loved it (especially the splashing each other and jumping in the river) and it's given us some wonderful memories. I would definitely recommend it!

Really enjoyed the 5-hour river kayak trek with two of my teenage kids along the River Spey near Aviemore. Would really recommend to other families. Tom, our guide, was lovely and the river was so clean and gorgeous. Nicely organised and good value. Go do it, I say - you won’t regret it.

I had an amazing experience with Active Outdoor Pursuits on their four-day canoe trip around Glenfinnan and Loch Shiel. Reuben and Jordan were fantastic instructors—friendly, knowledgeable, and always focused on safety. They went out of their way to make the trip enjoyable and were really helpful when it came to setting up our campsite. I’d definitely recommend Active Outdoor Pursuits and their team.

Fantastic Canoe Trip Across the Great Glen! We had an incredible experience on the Great Glen Canoe Trail, thanks to our guide Barney from Active Outdoor Pursuits. From the very beginning, Barney’s knowledge of the area and his clear passion for the outdoors made the journey both educational and enjoyable. He struck the perfect balance between guiding us safely and allowing us to immerse ourselves in the stunning Scottish landscape. Barney’s enthusiasm was infectious, and his expertise gave us confidence throughout the trip. Whether it was navigating the lochs, sharing local history, or pointing out wildlife, he made every moment memorable. The trip itself was well-organised and truly unforgettable. I would highly recommend Active Outdoor Pursuits to anyone looking for an authentic and enriching outdoor adventure in Scotland. Thank you, Barney, for making this such a special experience!

Had an amazing experience with Active Outdoor Pursuits, especially thanks to our hosts James and Reuben – they were fantastic coaches, professional, and made the activities really enjoyable. One thing to mention though – when I booked rafting on Sunday 21st September (for the 28th) and tried to cancel the next morning, the process was quite frustrating. Within just 15 hours of booking, I was told cancellation wasn’t possible as “arrangements had already been made,” which didn’t feel right. Later on wednesday, when I asked about alternative non-water activities , I was spoken to quite rudely by the lady over the phone – being told “you booked it and you have to take full responsibility" , " Either you do it or you lose your money " and lot more and honestly with a very bad tone. Eventually, we did get offered rock climbing (Which btw is really appreciated as mistake was made), but the initial handling and tone really weren’t great. also we paid £69pp for rafting (which was cancelled) and rock climbing was £60pp so we didnt get the difference either, so when you book just know you cant make changes That being said, the actual instructors James and Reuben were excellent and made the day worthwhile – a big credit to them for turning things around and making the rockclimbing experience memorable.

Recently stayed here and did the activities, it was such great fun, definitely made some good memories. Staff were really friendly, enthusiastic, informative and just fun to be with. I was nervous at first as I haven’t done most of the activities before, but managed to do everything and exceeded my expectations. Thank you for having our group. Shout out to Maddie, Barney, Chris and Rueben for making this a brilliant week for us.

We booked a white water rafting trip along the River Spey. We ended up doing on top kayaking because the river levels were so low. We had a great time, our guide Porl was amazing - very knowledgeable bloke and we felt very safe under his guidance. It was a great 4 (maybe 5) hours along the River Spey. If you are thinking about doing this activity - go for it. You wont regret it. When we visit Aviemore again we will be booking with Active Outdoor Pursuits.

We had a nice one and a half hour ride with walk and trot. The saddles were very comfortable. And the horses were lovely. We liked it very much.

I had a really great hack today on Mona, she was absolutely brilliant. The lady who took me was so lovely, she told me lots about the area and she told me about the breeding and we saw lots of the ponies. The ponies are clearly loved and very well looked after. Thank you for a fantastic day, I hope to visit again 😊
Kate S — Google review
The beginner trek is simply walking in a line with your horse being led around a field behind an industrial site and next to the railway. Quite overpriced. Would be fine for little children. It’s very slow and the guides are nice to talk to but provide no information on where you are walking to or any sort of historical information and, don’t provide much information about the horses unless asked. Very underwhelming for the highlands.
Joanne A — Google review
Had a wonderful hack out in the highlands here! Myself and my mother are both experienced riders and they really catered to us, horses were very well behaved - lots of fun!

Great experience ! We booked a 30 min ride and were not disappointed! The employee who welcomed us was kind and knowledgeable, which put me (with no prior experience) at ease right away! Would 100% recommend.
Cariou C — Google review
My daughter and I went on the 1.5 hour intermediate trek. The scenery was beautiful and the Highland ponies we were riding were lovely. The girls leading the ride were very professional and friendly. We really enjoyed ourselves and would love to go back for the 2.5 hour ride. Thank you Highland Horse Fun!
Antonia B — Google review
Great experience we booked the advanced trek, but definitely the wellness of the horses need to be double checked and the state of the yard was absolutely terrible.
Rafeea R — Google review
Brilliant pony trek out yesterday in the sunshine. Staff went out on ponyback alongside, and were super friendly, helpful and made us both feel relaxed. The pony/horses were amazing to ride and clearly well loved. As always, views were spectacular. Fully recommend.

Nestled in the heart of Badenoch, Kingussie is a delightful village that invites exploration. Stroll through its charming streets adorned with stunning Victorian architecture and immerse yourself in local creativity at galleries like Eleven41 and Iona. For nature enthusiasts, the Gynack Burn offers a picturesque journey as it flows from Loch Gynack to the River Spey.
It's a river.
John A — Google review
A charming fast flowing burn that links Loch Gynack with the River Spey. The Golf Course Circular and The Mill Trail paths are a good way to follow the burn. The well-maintained woodland paths are safe and not too steep. There's a few picnic tables and look out for information panels along the way. Some of the burn is deep in a gorge, inaccessible on foot, so it's best to keep toddlers and dogs under control. Some of the route is on Gynack road, which has no pavement. Below Kingussie, the Speyside Way follows the burn, which can sometimes be forded in dry weather. In flood, the best view is from the footbridge near the golf clubhouse.

No one around when we arrived, waited and waited in the shabby bar with our cases, no way to call anyone (bell at reception had been disconnected), place was in a terrible state: smashed door in gents, generally very run-down and unwelcoming. We left and stayed in Travelodge 40 mins up the road in Inverness. Edit - have no idea about rooms, we didn't get that far.

Paid £65 for just 1 night on a quick business trip up to Kingussie. The staff were very friendly, and the room was clean with fresh white bedding. Breakfast is available, though I left too early in the morning to sample it. Overall, it's a decent place to spend a night or two.

The entire building seemed run down with clear signs of poor upkeep over several years. The worst part was how dirty everything was. The only reasonable clean thing was the bed and towels. The rest of the room was only clean on the surface. Once you started to look around stains in the carpet and on the walls became apparent. Breakfast was included and we could have asked to have it prepared, however the general uncleanness made us hesitant. The pictures only is accurate in the sense that the rooms is shown the way they are. However it doesn't show how run down the place is and it doesn't show the lack of deep cleaning.

Booked a table for the restaurant, we was seated for all of two minutes before we left , it's a dive , the place is absolutely filthy, stinks , someones old gym bag sat in the restaurant are , no wonder it was dead in there . Absolutely awful , was really awkward telling the bar lady that we actually wasn't going to order in fact we were leaving. Avoid at all costs it's really really dirty !

Shabby and definitely not chic. Mix up with our booking but it was resolved. Room dusty, curtains fell off, no hairdryer over priced for what we got. We did have a meal which was surprisingly good and reasonably priced.

If you are looking for the bland conformity of a wannabe chain hotel, forget this place. If, on the other hand, you appreciate a genuine warm welcome in a historic old railway hotel, in a location perfectly suited for access to nearby electric car chargers, look no further. Clean and comfortable, this was just what we needed on a long journey, and good value too. Thanks to the owner for going out of his way to make our stay a happy one.
