Fontanellato in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Fontanellato, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Fontanellato is a small Emilia-Romagna town best known for the moated Rocca Sanvitale, whose frescoes include Parmigianino’s celebrated “Diana and Actaeon.” Its compact historic center, arcaded streets, and quiet piazzas offer a more relaxed, authentic atmosphere than larger nearby cities. Just outside town lies the Labirinto della Masone, one of the world’s largest bamboo mazes, combined with an art collection and cultural spaces. The area also makes a good base for tasting local specialties like Parmigiano Reggiano and Parma ham from nearby producers.
With favorites like Teatro di Fontanellato, Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary, and Xalumeria 3 Portici, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Cibarium Salsamenteria and Locanda Nazionale so you can get the best taste of Fontanellato while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Rocca Sanvitale is a massive castle located in a small town near Parma, Italy. It features a fully functional moat and is surrounded by a charming square where visitors can park and explore. The castle boasts frescoed works and offers tours and entertainment. While the inside of the castle was closed for some visitors, the surrounding area offers lovely trattorias where one can enjoy coffee or a spritz. The picturesque village also hosts a delightful market on Sundays.
This beautiful castle is located in such a small town, it's a shame because probably no one has ever heard of it. Just East of Parma and directly off the highway to Milan is this castle with a fully functional moat around it. Can park on the square directly next to it. Definitely visit and you'll be alone.

I loved it that it was so quiet on the day we visited so I was able to have a good look at the courtyard and took nice selfies 😻😸
Gigia T — Google review
Great experience to get to see this. My colleague was taking me around after dinner to pass some time- from the US and we have nothing of this historical value. The incorporation of the town around it now being restaurants and such is nice- I'm sure during the day is even more lively and beautiful!
Meghanne F — Google review
Fantastic historic castle (moat and all!) that still contains all the original furniture and fixtures, including weaponry and armors. Ideally, visit when the weather is cooler because the interior can get pretty hot in July (which is when we visited). I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the guided tour: the docent made the castle's history come alive with plenty of historical info and many anecdotes about the castle inhabitants over the centuries...quite amazing, including the vicious plot against the Sanseverina noblewoman(don't want to spoil it here, but she is an important character in Stendhal's novel "The Charterhouse of Parma"). He is probably the most knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide I have ever met. Last but not least, this castle hides a pictorial gem by the great Parmigianino, created at the Age of 19 before he was catapulted to fame. Do not miss!

We visited this castle on a Saturday in November, so it was closed and we couldn't go inside. But the square around the castle is lovely and there are cute trattorias where you can have a coffee or a spritz.

Flea market
The Fontanellato flea market, which has been active for over three decades, is renowned as one of the most captivating antique markets in Northern Italy. Exhibitors present a wide range of high-quality items, making it an enticing destination for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Additionally, the opportunity to explore the Rocca adds to the allure of this market. However, there have been some criticisms regarding the limited availability of food and wine options.

Nestled in the charming town of Fontanellato, "Degusteria Io Parmigianino" offers a delightful culinary experience that complements the rich history surrounding it. The venue is located near an impressive fortress dating back to the 14th century, which houses a stunning chamber adorned with frescoes by the renowned artist Parmigianino. This masterpiece depicts the myth of Diana and Actaeon and stands as a testament to Italian Mannerism.
We‘ve been there for the second time after a shopping tour to Fidenza Outlet;-) worth a detour. Fresh home made pasta very good choice of Parmesan, Salami and cooked ham and a really friendly staff. You can sit nice outside and inside and stroll through the pretty little village of Fontanellato after or before the meal. The have also a good choice of local vino frizzante and other regional products.

We had dinner at this restaurant and were not happy with the food and service. 1. The pasta was not good.. i mean on italian standard it was really not good. 2. The service was AWFUL. For an example at the start of dinner the waiter offered us complementary tutto fritti that we accepted. Then they included that in the bill and said that it was supposed to be charged for and the waiter we spoke to has gone home. 3. I am not kidding but there was a treebranche (5cm) in one of the tortellinni that my wife bit into. You can’t make this stuff up… and they did not even say sorry when we pointed it out. FYI if you are planning to have a good meal in Fontanellato - stay away from this place :)

Nestled in the charming historic village of Fontanellato, the Teatro di Fontanellato is a delightful provincial theater that exudes neoclassical elegance. Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a jazz concert there, and it was an experience to remember! This intimate venue boasts excellent acoustics and offers great views from even the second floor. Before settling in for a show, be sure to explore the picturesque surroundings; it's a lovely town worth wandering through.
Quint little theater. Make sure you walk around a little, it's such a beautiful town. If you're feeling a little hungry before the show, on the side of the theater there's this really good restaurant connected to the theater. Def. go there, you don't wanna see a show on an empty stomach, don't you? I wouldn't. Make yourself comfy and enjoy the show!

The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary is an exquisitely crafted basilica, boasting a grand and distinctly Baroque facade. Its remarkable state of preservation further enhances its allure as a place of worship and reverence. The main altar, adorned with captivating beauty, stands at the forefront while towards the rear lies a charming chapel where one can seek solace through prayer. This sacred space holds great significance as a sanctuary dedicated to honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary and her connection to rosary devotion.

(Translated by Google) The Sanctuary, which rises outside the historic center, is based on a pre-existing oratory dedicated in 1397 to San Giuseppe and donated by the Marquis Galeotto Lupi of Soragna to the Dominican friars, invited to Fontanellato by Veronica da Correggio - widow of Giacomo Antonio Sanvitale – so that they could assist the population of the village. The first nucleus of the sanctuary was built in 1514. After the sacking of 1531 and the demolition of 1543, the temple and the monastery were rebuilt, dedicating them to Saint Joseph. Only after the Council of Trent was the cult of the Madonna promoted with the title of "Queen of the Holy Rosary" which still attracts numerous pilgrims. Dominican Rosary Movement in Fontanellato Faithful to the mandate which, as Paul VI reminded us in the "Marialis cultus", sees "the sons of Saint Dominic, by tradition guardians and propagators of such healthy devotion", near the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Fontanellato - and under the special protection of Mary - the headquarters of the Dominican Rosary Movement is located, the official body of the Dominican Fathers for the promotion, diffusion and care of Marian and Rosarian devotion throughout the territory of Northern Italy. The site has the richness of a Marian and Rosarian portal.🕍👍😀✋.Thank God 🙏 (Original) Il Santuario, che si eleva al difuori del centro storico, è basato su di un preesistente oratorio dedicato nel 1397 a San Giuseppe e donato dal Marchese Galeotto Lupi di Soragna ai frati Domenicani, invitati a Fontanellato da Veronica da Correggio – vedova di Giacomo Antonio Sanvitale – perché assistessero la popolazione del borgo. Located under a tranquil veranda, Cibarium Salsamenteria is an excellent choice for a delectable snack or lunch. The staff is kind, friendly, and attentive. The menu boasts a splendid array of mouthwatering local cured meats such as Culatello, Gran Culi, Coppa, Spalla Cruda, Spalla Cotta, and the finest Strolghino I have ever tasted. Additionally, they offer an outstanding selection of Parmigiano cheese.
This restaurant served one of the best cold meat and cheese platters I've ever had. Served with tasty torte fritte. Everything on it was delicious. We followed the platter with perfect tortellini di ricotta. Super service, lovely ambience. Even though the place was packed with people we thought we were politely and well attended.

(Translated by Google) A lovely place to eat, right in front of the fortress! The cured meats were really good, as were all the mushroom dishes! There wasn't a children's menu, but they made us pasta with tomato sauce anyway. Besides the cured meats, I particularly enjoyed the fried porcini mushrooms, and the risotto was also delicious. The staff was very friendly, the restaurant wasn't crowded, and we were served quickly. One of the girls (I think the owner) was very kind, and asked us several times how our lunch was going and if she could help us. Recommended if you're in the area! (Translated by Google) We stopped at this place by chance for dinner, thinking it was a typical Emilian trattoria. Upon entering, we were greeted by a small, well-maintained space that clearly shows years of loyal service. We were surprised to discover that, yes, they offer traditional dishes, but with a Neapolitan twist. So we decided to order a pizza and an appetizer while we waited. Overall, I give it a passing grade; the pizza was good, as was the appetizer, but everything was a bit... too much. The dough isn't bad, especially when the pizzas are brought to the table, but it's a bit too thick (a matter of personal taste), and it makes it difficult to finish the pizza. Good service, friendly, helpful, and smiling staff—a plus for them. The music is nice, not intrusive.

Nestled in the charming town of Fontanellato, Xalumeria 3 Portici is a delightful salumeria that captures the essence of Emilia's Food Valley. This quaint and well-maintained spot offers a warm atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a leisurely lunch. The menu may be concise, but it showcases carefully selected ingredients that highlight local flavors.
Nice friendly place. Good food. Homemade ready meals, cheeses and cured meet. High recommend

Small Cafe sort of restaurant/ Deli with fresh Parmagiano/ Tortollini/Parma Ham. The taste of these fresh products locally made was so much different as when I buy it in Zürich or elsewhere. Very friendly and authentic owner and service

(Translated by Google) We had lunch today for four of us...the mixed platter of cured meats and parmesan was spectacular! Accompanied by an excellent torta fritta! For first courses, we had tortelli with herbs, pumpkin, and fried bacon cubes! Everything was excellent! The owner was truly kind and friendly! Tutto ottimo! La proprietaria veramente gentile e simpatica!

(Translated by Google) Fantastic experience! I went to this shop for lunch with my husband and everything was fantastic. The atmosphere was just like a shop, the food was excellent and the service was impeccable. Very kind waitresses but the 5 stars go above all to the kindness, friendliness, friendliness and professionalism of the owner. Absolutely a place to return to try the local products of Parma (Original) Esperienza fantastica!

(Translated by Google) Xalumeria is a delicatessen and restaurant that, with its simplicity, perfectly represents the authenticity and culinary culture of Emilia. Discovered for the 4 Ristoranti program, it has never lost its focus on quality, diners, and good food. It's a journey, an experience. Highly recommended. Assolutamente consigliato.

(Translated by Google) Small and well-kept place. The owner is very courteous and kind. The menu is not very extensive, which indicates that the products are absolutely sought after. Account slightly below average. I absolutely recommend the parmesan anolini. Perhaps the ham on the starters was a little too fatty but it's a tolerable shame. Only 1 beer available but that can be accommodated as the place is also a shop. Strictly homemade desserts (Original) Locale piccolo e ben curato. Dolci rigorosamente fatti in casa

(Translated by Google) Truly a fantastic place! Very good food, made with love and good ingredients, the atmosphere is really pleasant, as is the service. We ate a Fontanellato cutting board with raw ham, coppa, salami and fried gnocco, fantastic. Then classic lasagna with ragù and with pumpkin and sausage super! Highly recommended, truly a genuine place to spend a nice lunch! We will definitely be back! Torneremo sicuramente!
