Betancuria in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Betancuria, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Betancuria, the former capital of Fuerteventura, offers a glimpse into the island’s early colonial history with whitewashed houses and quiet, traditional streets set in a green inland valley. Its main landmark is the Iglesia de Santa María, a rebuilt 17th-century church that reflects the town’s religious and architectural heritage. Nearby viewpoints and winding roads through the Betancuria Rural Park provide scenery that contrasts sharply with the island’s coastal resorts. A small archaeology and ethnography museum adds context about pre-Hispanic and early Spanish settlement on Fuerteventura.
With favorites like Statues, Casa Naturaleza, and TAVERNA-GRiLL, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like TAVERNA-GRiLL and Mi sitio bar & tapas so you can get the best taste of Betancuria while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Specialty Museums
The Museo del Queso Majorero is a captivating museum that offers hands-on displays, a restored windmill, and a cactus garden. Visitors can engage in interactive activities such as 'virtual milking' and explore touch-button exhibits about the island's flora and fauna. The museum provides insights into Majorero cheese production and tasting tips while also showcasing the history of Fuerteventura's breeding and cheese-making culture. Additionally, it features a shop offering locally-made handicrafts and cheeses.
The museum is modest but kept in great cleanliness. Rather a quiet place to learn about the geological and historical history of the island at a basic level. The museum has exhibits within the botanical garden, also well-kept and nicely situated. The ladies in the gift shop are very polite and nice. For me a place of peace and reflection. If I had to suggest something, it would be less information about cheese and goats and more about the island and people, but that's just a delicate thought. I would gladly come back here.
Mirek K — Google review
Visiting this museum was one of the highlights of our trip to Fuerteventura. Nestled in a serene spot with sweeping views of the island's desert landscape, the setting alone is worth the visit — vast, open, and truly spectacular, it gives you a real sense of the island’s raw natural beauty. Inside, the museum offers a fascinating look at one of Fuerteventura's most iconic traditions: goat cheese making. The exhibits are both informative and engaging, showcasing the entire process from traditional methods to modern techniques. You can see how the cheese is made, learn about the importance of goats to the local culture, and even sample some of the freshest and most delicious goat cheese we’ve ever tasted. It’s a perfect mix of education, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you're a foodie, a history buff, or simply looking to explore something unique and authentic, this museum delivers a genuine taste of the island in more ways than one.

An absolute must-visit! 🧀🌿 The Cheese Museum on Fuerteventura is a real gem – not only for cheese lovers. The beautifully designed garden area 🌴🌵is full of charm ✨and lovingly arranged details that make you want to stroll and linger. There are also interactive elements, so even children won’t miss out on the fun. The old mill is another highlight and adds to the authentic atmosphere of the place. The staff are extremely friendly which makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. And of course, the cheese tasting is a highlight in itself – fresh, varied and absolutely worth trying. A place where tradition, taste and warm hospitality come together. Truly worth a visit!

We are stayed in Pierre & Vacances Fuerteventura Origomare and took a drive around to see different museums the cheese museum was a lovely walk around with family. We paid 3 euro to do a cheese tasting at the end i enjoyed it. We ran out of time to do a cactuses garden at the back but got pictures of it from the top of the building
Justin H — Google review
If you love cheese you have to go to this museum. You can get to know a lot about making goat cheese. On the area of the museum you also have palms garden and cactus garden. You can go inside a windmill. Ticket cost just 5€.
Adriana Z — Google review
Very nice place to visit. Not too much to see, though. Nice garden. Don't buy cheese here, too expensive. Same cheese in the supermarket almost half the price
Adrijana P — Google review
I wasn't disappointed but the exhibition need to be maintained a little better. The museum is largely in Spanish and English but you can scan a qr code to get other translations. There is currently no option for English through the qr code. There are a couple of sections where the Spanish has not been translated, just written in spanish again, and a couple of sections where wording has been picked off, so it's hard to know what the section says. There were at least 5 screens that weren't working, which is pretty poor form. You can buy a taster of cheese at the end but this is almost as expensive as the tour again and there isn't an option to buy both together and get a discount that im aware of. The cactus garden is nice and the terrace has a pretty view.
Sam T — Google review
Loved this museum, with lots of interesting information about the history of Fuerteventura and the Majorero Cheese. The wind mill and cactus garden were interesting as well. The cheese tasting is definitely recommended, don’t leave without tasting those delicious cheeses!

The Morro Velosa Statues in Fuerteventura are a must-see attraction, featuring two ancient kings of the island set amid a stunning valley landscape. Created by Emiliano Hernandez, these statues offer a picturesque sight and are perfect for stargazing in the evening. Situated in Betancuria rural park, at an altitude of 600m, they provide an incredible viewpoint overlooking the dunes of Corralejo and Tiscamanita.
Nice view. Nice as a quick stop before the old capital of Betancuria

Not much to do up there but the views are fantastic and great photo opportunities are available!
Jason F — Google review
Beautiful location and views. Impressive statues. Worth the windy road car journey. The surrounding scenery is stunning
Anne H — Google review
Amazing view. Well made statues, nice and big. Holding the statues' private parts while having your picture taken seemed quite a popular thing to do.
John N — Google review
Made the trip to the status from Corralejo...about 40 min drive....lovely scenery on route. Stopped off for a quick photo opportunity of Tindaya Mountain....great view. The status area itself has parking on bother sides of road. Great view and photo opportunities of surrounding areas...as you are on one of the highest points on the island! ...and I have to mention the numerous and friendly squirrels! Take a short stroll on the various trails in the area....and the curious nature of these little creatures will bring them right up to your feet! .... Once you're finished with photos etc....you can continue your drive down to the little picturesque village of Betancuria...and park up and stop for a quick coffee or snacks in a cafe.
Shane B — Google review
Nice view from the place. It’s possible to park at the two places if it’s not space close to the statues. You can take a walk around as well.

Mirador de Guise y Ayose is situated along the FTV-30 road, offering stunning views of Fuerteventura. The viewpoint features two 4-meter high statues representing the ancient kings of Jandia and Maxorata. The drive to the site is pleasant, with well-maintained roads and minimal traffic. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the island and the ocean from designated parking bays.
Very interesting view point and a piece of a Canary Islands history. Large viewing terrace overlooking the landscape on one side and a two impressive metal sculptures of Guise and Ayose. A few parking spaces on both sides of the road available , there is not much to walk, you probably spend there approx. 20-30 min. The point is located almost between the two turnes, so it is quite tricky to drive out as you have to watch out both directions and it's quite inconvenient. I was lucky to have my partner to make sure the road is free 😊.
Angelika Z — Google review
Beautiful viewpoint in the mountains of Fuerteventura with a view of the sea. You should allow some time for the ascent as the road is very narrow. Once you reach the top, there is very little space to park. The view is outstanding. A sculpture commemorates the history of the island.

wonderful view. you can park there and admire the amazing view. you can see all the way to the ocean on one side or the old capital betancuria. it is quite windy. there are also 2 statues with their kings and a panel telling the history of the place

Impressive artwork. Statues of the two ancient kings of Fuerteventura, Guise & Ayose. Quick stop to say hello & enjoy the view on our way to Betancuria.

The view here is really awesome. The whole island feels like one big rocky desert, but from up here you see it all laid out below you. It’s kind of amazing to see that rugged landscape from above. Plus, there are these big statues of guys in their underwear scattered around, which definitely adds a quirky vibe to the place. It’s a cool spot to relax, take some photos, and just enjoy the unique scenery.

In the heart of Fuerteventura lies the charming town of Betancuria, a must-visit destination offering a blend of history, culture, and culinary delights. The Iglesia de Santa María de Betancuria stands as a focal point within the designated Historic Site of Betancuria. Originally built in the 15th century in Gothic style, it underwent reconstruction over the centuries, resulting in an impressive blend of Mudejar, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture.
Betancuria, the island's old capital, is a charming and picturesque town that we really enjoyed visiting. The historic atmosphere and beautiful surroundings make it a lovely spot to explore. There's also a historical church with a €2 entrance fee if you’d like to visit. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

Lovely little restaurant well protected from the heat. Lovely english lady we meet here that looked after us. Lovely food. The town walk around is very beautiful and quite. Thank you so much

Nice church in the centre of Betancuria. Very picturesce town in the hearth of Fuerteventura en former capital. The town has some touritst shows and viewpoints. Nice to walk around the little town square and it's surroundings. Otherwise there isn't much to do.

Observation deck
Mirador del Risco de Las Peñas is a stunning viewpoint located on the FV-30 road, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Granadillo valley and the winding mountain road. At 426 meters above sea level, it provides an opportunity to admire the collapsed volcanic terrain and observe local wildlife such as squirrels and crows. While it's tempting to feed them, signs advise against it.
Stunning views and well worth a visit, it is a Mirador off a mountain pass, where you can see a once massage volcano that has collapsed to leave a mountainous terrain. The weather there is stunning and chipmunks run through the rocks, definitely use this road again, as there are lots of wonderful views and not to busy out of the hustle and bustle of the towns. There is also a hommage to motorcyclist who have lost there lives on these roads, being bikers I took a photo. This road links on to the other side of the island where it is more peaceful, we were off to the caves of Ajoy whilst on our adventures 🇪🇸😊 If you like the review and made it to the end please pop a like 👍
Marcus S — Google review
Nice mirador with 360 degree panoramic view, bit windy though. There are some ravens and squirrels around that are eager for some food (it‘s forbidden to feed them though). If you are lucky, you will also get to see some wild goats. This place is worth a stop on your way through the mountains.
Stephanie K — Google review
Great viewpoint with wide-open views over the barren, dramatic landscape of central Fuerteventura. There’s plenty of space to park, and it’s a quiet location compared to the more touristy spots. You can walk along the mountain ridge for better panoramas and some peaceful solitude. Unfortunately, some visitors feed the squirrels, which isn’t great for wildlife or safety. Still, it’s a scenic stop worth including on a drive through the inland mountains.
Dima B — Google review
Very nice point to get the view from the roof of Fuerteventura even for the handicaped people on the wheelchair. The road is narrow but well maintained. The area must wibe all interested in geology. We came from Ajuy and continued to Betancuria that is marvelous.
Pavlina S — Google review
The views of the surrounding areas are stunning and if you don't mind taking a rustic trail to the nearby hilltop I am sure that the view is even more amazing.
Jørgen O — Google review
Great views but very windy near the edge and the Visitor Centre is closed, which is a shame, because it hadn't been open that long. Friendly crows and local squirrels but there are now signs saying not to feed them, which spoils the enjoyment
Danielle D — Google review
From there you have a beautiful view from the mountains of the canary island. It's a beautiful place to take pictures if the weather is good and sunny, but can be hot

Restaurant
The TAVERNA-GRiLL is situated in a picturesque location and boasts a courteous staff who make an effort to provide excellent service, despite being understaffed. The menu offers appetizing options, with the partner enjoying flavorsome goat meat and grilled sausage served in generous portions. However, the chicken skewers were found to be tasteless and tough, leaving little satisfaction. Although one would consider returning to this beautifully decorated garden restaurant, caution should be exercised when placing orders.
The meat was incredible and perfectly cooked. Nice atmosphere in the internal garden.

- I read only the bad reviews so I understand what are the challenges, I don't know who reads the 4* reviews :-)...but this is a way to give feedback and say thank you to the team in the restaurant. - First comment: do not confuse with La Sombra - they look like sharing the same space. 5* Food was excellent, big portions which have been shared between myself and my wife -> goat in the oven with spices and potato was amazing in the taste and texture; the other dish the "secret" of grilled Iberian pig - that is always a matter of taste and I like more fat grilled meat, for both myself and my wife this was a top grill, I see people are sometimes complaining is to fat, for us it was excellent and perfectly grilled. 5* Portions are really large (at least what we have received looked like very easy to share), we have wasted the salad and side dish (fries) 5* I read in the bad reviews about waiting time longer than 30', we have been addressed and served in due time (not too fast nor with delays), our choice is to avoid the main stream of customers and come either before that or after that - in this case we arrived after the main stream, couple of hours before closing 3* Be prepared, this is not a cheap restaurant-> EUR83 for 2 people to leave with a highly satisfying late lunch 1* Very disappointing that they accept cash only

The service was not great. The food was tasty, and the place itself is very nice. You can sit under the trees in the shade and even feed cute cats.
Yuliia — Google review
The drinks and desserts we had were very good and our waitress was very pleasant but the man behind the counter where the desserts and drinks was incredibly rude, ignoring us completely when I asked in Spanish how much the tarts were (as there was a sign saying cash only), muttering something in Spanish to himself. Then when we went to pay the bill at the same counter and asked to pay the bill (again in Spanish), we were ignored again and he wouldn't even give eye contact. Eventually we were able to pay the bill by card and during this whole process he never spoke once, so incredibly rude!

We drove to the lovely little village of Bentancuria today and stopped at the first restaurant we came too, what an absolutely delightful place. I had a rib eye steak whilst my partner had chicken skewers, the dining experience was top notch, the food was beautiful the location was stunning and the staff are friendly, helpful and polite, and there are cats which for me just made the whole experience even better..... I feel I need to come back to Fuertaventura just to experience this place again ❤️

Cash only, Spanish language only, but absolutely amazing. Beautiful little place, suggest visiting later in the day after the tour busses have left. Ended up having a tbone steak suggested by the waitress and it was cooked beautifully.

This restaurant is a fantastic escape from the typical tourist spots. The food was delicious, the service attentive, and the atmosphere had an authentic, local charm that set it apart from the crowded, tourist-filled eateries. Overall, we had a very pleasant experience and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a genuine dining experience.

Family restaurant. Amazing chefs. Very friendly people. Cheap, Healthy and local products. In Antigua the best restaurant. Ask for the goat burger and you wont be disappointed. If you’re veggie go for the aubergine tower and avocado salad. The picture is breakfast on demand. Buen provecho.

Took a chance and was not disappointed. We shared some tapas which were boquerones, padron peppers, papas arugadas and a smaller sized portion of fried kid meat, which was actually pretty big for a small portion. Ended up having to take away some of the kid goat because I was so stuffed. Only slightly odd thing is that we were given bread and alioli which we didn't ask for but we're charged for anyway. Not complaining as it was only 1.50 so if you and don't want it you'd better say from the start. Everything delicious! Very popular with locals. Has two beers and it all came to 29 euros.

Casa Naturaleza is an exceptional restaurant that offers a delightful dining experience. The ambiance of this establishment is truly enchanting, with a charming pond, lush foliage, and rustic architecture that distinguishes it from other eateries on the island. Although our visit was brief, we were captivated by its serene atmosphere and would have gladly spent more time there. The cuisine at Casa Naturaleza is equally impressive – the dishes are flavorful, diverse, and served in generous portions.
We had such a great time having lunch here. Food was terrific, and the service was five stars. Luis and Ahmed were invaluable and flexible in finding us the right spot at the restaurant. Highly recommended! ✨

Being a carnivore I was in search of meat and this beautiful little restaurant tucked up in the hills didn’t disappoint. I had the braised goat which fell apart on the plate and melted in my mouth. Exceptional. It was accompanied by home made thick cut seasoned chips, rice and flame grilled peppers in olive oil. My partner had a desert, a very large piece of apple strudel with ice cream which finished it off perfectly. One of the best meals I’ve eaten in a long time. The price matched the quality of food and the surroundings. So worth the drive if you’re after a memorable visit with jaw dropping views out of every window. If you like good quality food away from the seafront plates this is somewhere you need to venture.

This was such a lovely lunch. We were very hungry after visiting the caves at ajuy. Everything we ate was super tasty and the waiters were really friendly. I ate the braised oxtail which was extremely good in a light sauce. My wife had braised pork knuckle and my daughter was happy with a lovely salad and pan con tomate. We also loved the metal sculptures just over the road.

Oh my word! Casa Naturaleza is a stunning oasis amidst an arrid, mountainous area, seemingly in the middle of nowhere. As you approach the building, you’re greeted with beautiful, bright shrubs spilling over the boundary wall and, upon entering the garden, your senses go into overdrive! The owners have created a little slice of heaven in a beautifully landscaped and tranquil garden, enriched with an abundance of tropical plants, and the sounds of running water and natural birdsong. There is a large, central pond filled with an array of goldfish and pretty, bright dragonflies provide further interest. We received a very cordial welcome on arrival by our friendly and knowledgeable server, Ahmed, who recommended a lovely shaded and draught-free area in which to sit abd enjoy the surroundings. We were very pleased with our choices of the king prawn starter followed by grilled fish and braised goat mains which we shared. The food was excellent…and plentiful! So, if you are looking for an idyllic place to stop, rest and eat on your route from Pájara to Betancuria (just off the scenic FV-30 road), I cannot recommend this restaurant enough 😊

Fantastic! Delicious food and probably the most relaxing/calm restaurant I’ve been to. We were stunned as we walked up the stairs here, you are greeted with a small pond surrounded by greenery, wooden pavilions and stone buildings, its magical and really sets itself apart from the other restaurants on the island! We were unfortunately in a hurry and couldn’t stay for to long, otherwise we would’ve easily spent the rest of the day at this absolute gem! The food was also striking, tasty and plentiful with a good selection of different dishes and beverages. I’m without a doubt coming back next time I visit Fuerteventura!

We stopped by this charming little restaurant after a long hike, and it was the perfect reward. The local goat’s cheese and ham were absolutely delicious — fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The staff were incredibly welcoming, always smiling and polite, and the service was impressively quick. The location itself is full of character and well worth a visit. Highly recommend if you're exploring the area and want a taste of something local and authentic!
