History Museums
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is a must-visit for history buffs, art enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by ancient civilizations. Located in the heart of Crete's capital city, it houses a vast collection of artifacts from the Minoan age and showcases Cretan art, sculptures, and archaeological finds. Families with children can enjoy educational exhibits and interactive displays. To gain deeper insights into the exhibits, visitors can take advantage of guided tours or audio guides offered by the museum.
What an incredible museum! After visiting the museums in major Classical Greece sites, I thought I'd seen everything. This one truly amazed me. The level of artistry and beauty in Minoan artifacts here is astounding! Even if you'd already visited the Knossos Palace site, make sure to come here for eye -popping colors and details. A feast for the eyes!

If you are passionate about history or archaeology, then you must visit this museum. If not, don’t bother. The Archaeological Museum is, in my opinion, the second most important tourist attraction in Heraklion (the first being the Koules Fortress). I won’t describe in detail what you can see here, because there are plenty of photos online, but I’ll make a few clarifications, because during my visit I noticed quite a few tourists who seemed disappointed by the collections on display. 1. An archaeological museum is not the same as a history museum. In an archaeological museum, you’ll find collections of objects, artifacts, and exhibits that help you understand (or imagine) how people lived in ancient times. If you’re looking for details about important figures and major events (wars, revolutions, political assassinations, discoveries, etc.), that’s what a history museum is for. 2. Don’t waste all your energy in the first halls. Many visitors make this mistake (I know, because back in college I worked as a tourist guide): they spend too much time in the prehistoric sections, get tired, and then rush through the most fascinating parts. I saw the same thing here: tourists staring for ages at the hundreds (or maybe thousands) of clay artifacts on the ground floor, only to hurry past the magnificent collection of ancient coins displayed upstairs. 3. In the very first hall there’s a wooden model - a miniature reconstruction of the Palace of Knossos. Even if it’s not 100% historically accurate (you can read online about the controversies surrounding the palace), it’s still very interesting. In fact, before visiting the actual archaeological site, it’s a great idea to stop by the museum. Personally, I think it’s even better to visit the museum and, if you’re short on time, you could easily skip the site itself. 4. Finally, before leaving, don’t forget the hall of statues. After finishing the upper floor, when you come back downstairs, turn left. I mention this because, to my great surprise, I saw entire groups of tourists leave the building at this point, missing one of the most remarkable collections in the museum. Finally, two more points: The air conditioning doesn’t always work. If you struggle with the heat, it’s best to avoid visiting during peak hours when the museum is very crowded. The museum is surrounded by a garden, so after your visit you can relax in the shade and enjoy the view—it’s especially beautiful at sunset.

Some photos of Heraklion archaeological museum. Was really fun and interesting. But I feel I wanted more time then I had to explore it all. After the guide was done we had only 20 min to explore the rest or buy some suverni. Would be great if it would have been 1-1,5 hours after extra. But overall it was a great enjoyment.
Rahl22 — Google review
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is actually very well-curated. There are ALOT of artefacts that ranged from pre-Minoan to Minoan and Roman/Greek history. Not only so, the museum tries to make sure that there are explanations in English for each section of the exhibit and for specific artefacts, there would be added details, with english explanations available as well. We love it that the path for the visit is well-defined as well. Visitors just have to follow the path and complete the artefacts on the first level, which leads to more on the second level, before returning to see the Roman/Greek statues at the end of the visit. There are a few things that stood out from the artefacts for us 1. Unlike most people who “Go big or go home”, the Minoans “go small”. In fact, they started to specialise in this skill of miniature craft where you find very small pieces of art, intricately designed and sculpted. 2. People had personalised seals. There were different animals as insignia and the method of utilising the seal also varied, with one version we saw, carved on a roller such that the insignia is rolled over the document/clay. 3. Written language was already available 4000 years ago. Around 2000BC, they found clays with sort of hieroglyphics on it. What was interesting to us was that the documents had lines on it, just like how our exercise books would be. The words would be written on those lines to depict perhaps the accounts or a story. The other interesting we found was that since the words were written on clay and used only for temporary accounts (i.e. not to be kept for extended period of time), the clays in the museum were actually “accidentally“ preserved due to a fire, that caused the clay to be hardened for us to see it thousands of years later. Had the option of coming here as part of a Knossos tour. It is a complete no brainer to choose to visit as the museum amplifies and expands your appreciation of the history of Crete particularly after visiting Knossos. I was unable to book tickets online beforehand, but the queue was worth standing in for 15-20 minutes, i'm unsure how long it is normally but there was on a Wednesday a later opening time of 1-8, so it was just a one of those things. However it was a superb building and rooms to view and look at the archaeological finds. Everything was densely packed in but was thoughtfully laid out and I could have spent much longer than the 1.5-2 hours I had available, and this was just prioritising the first floor with the Minoan finds.

Amazing place full of items mainly from Knossos Palace. I would recommend visiting this place prior to seeing Knossos Palace. There is a cafe with a great view over the part of Heraklion and sea port. To avoid the crowds i believe it is better to come in an afternoon.

What can I say, the archaeology in this museum is amazing. The amount and quality of the finds on display at stunning. It covers all throughout the ages. We visited Knossos before visiting the museum, everything just slots into place and you get to understand the history and relevance of the finds.

The RΑM RULERS Computer and Gaming Museum is a fun place for all ages where you can see vintage consoles and video games from the 1970s to the present. It also has arcade games, rare board games from the 1980s, and vintage magazines.
This is just a suggestion as I didn’t get inside: If you want to get in you might need to make a reservation ahead several days I found the museum just yesterday (13/07/23), and the website showed that no reservation can be made these two days until 15/07, the day I plan to leave, and I called the number twice, yesterday at night and today in the morning, to see if I can have any chance, but no one answered. From the pictures it seems that it is a very interesting museum, so it’s really a pity that I can’t get inside to experience those things.

This museum has an astonishing collection of home micros and, what's more, these old computers are functional and available to use! An essential place to visit, to learn about the history of computers and the evolution of technology, or to relive the glory of 8/16-bit computing. The owners are also lovely people. They have created this place with care and love and it shows!
Manossg — Google review
I didn't really know what to expect, except for several old systems in working condition, and was happily surprised. Great collection of retro machines (computers and consoles, some VERY rare, quite beyond the set that we typically remember from that time), with applications and games at the ready. Vagelis and Katerina know and love their stuff, and are more than enthusiastic to share this - and how often do you end a guided tour playing Bubble Bobble with your host? Highly recommended for any retrolover, great experience for anyone interested in what came before what we perceive as computing today. I think anything less than the interactive tour is too brief.

The Venetian Loggia, located in the heart of Heraklion Town, is a magnificent structure that dates back to the 17th century. Originally serving as a political and commercial center for the city's elite, it now houses part of the town hall and serves as a meeting point for municipal councils. This impressive rectangular building showcases typical Venetian architecture with its semi-circular arches and intricate sculptured coat of arms, trophies, and metopes.
A beautiful example of Venetian architecture in the city center. The structure features Doric columns on the ground floor and Ionic columns on the upper floor, reflecting the elegance of Palladian design. Originally used by Venetian nobles as a meeting hall, today it functions as the city hall. Just a few steps from the Liontaria Fountain—definitely worth stopping by for its history, style, and quick photos.

The busiest cafe downtown, and for a good reason. They have a huge pastry selection, and an excellent coffee! The only problem is that they don't have price tags or descriptions for the pastries so you have to ask the counter girls, which seems like tierd of answering.

Museum
The Museum of Ancient Greek Technology by Kotsanas in Heraklion is a place where visitors can explore the earliest scientific engineering techniques. It features a wide variety of reconstructed hi-tech devices like the robot servant of Philon, Herons cinema, Ktesibioss hydraulic clock, the Antikythera mechanism, and more. Guided tours are available for all ages to learn more about these fascinating ancient technologies.
Two floor museum able to be seen in 45-60 minutes, with very interesting view of Ancient Greek technology (particularly between 6th and 3rd centuries BC). Most displays include information about a specific invention, including how it worked, when it was invented, and a visual of what it looked like (model, recreation, or video). Though none of the items are from the time period it was a good way to visualize and understand its importance. It was moderately quiet when we came on a July Friday afternoon so felt like we could read all information without feeling rushed. Comfortable temperature inside, and has toilets upstairs along with a small cafe and some seating.
Becky T — Google review
We really enjoyed this museum – small but very interesting. We visited it in less than an hour but stayed another half hour upstairs playing with the fun logic games. Most exhibits actually work, and the staff is very dedicated, friendly and happy to explain and demonstrate. The building itself is impressive, from the Venetian period. A lovely experience, highly recommended!
CATALINA B — Google review
A great little hidden gem of a museum. it is very informative and they also have working models of the ancient greek inventions. The staff were very friendly and were demonstrating the different technologies. There is a small gift shop upstairs and a place to get refreshments, with an outside balcony area. Definitely worth a visit.
Jeff — Google review
Cool and unique museum. Very helpful staff who gave very good and informed explanations and demonstrations. The ancient Greeks really came up with so many scientific, mathematical and technological inventions e.g. the first alarm clock and the first robot. Nice to see a display cabinet on Hippocrates and Galen.
Matt C — Google review
Very unique. The ticket as of 2025 is 7€ but it's worth as you can stay and check all the inventions for a few hours. The stuff even make small presentations of some of the machines. Most unique was the automated wine serving maid of Philon.
Evie L — Google review
Wonderful museum!! Do take the time to visit and experience the amazing inventions of ancient Greece and marvel at their ingenuity and resourcefulness. The lovely staff demostrate how the items work and are very eager to explain and give more information about each exhibit. Spend some time on the ground floor taking in all the information, then go up to second floor for a second exhibit, get a Greek coffee and play some of the ancient games that we are still enjoying to this day.
Lavinia I — Google review
The Museum of Ancient Greek Technology (Heraklion) opened at 9am and a staff told us that there were exhibits on the first level and the second level was more of a cafe and souvenir shop. We started with an introduction of how Greece, sitting at the crossroads of the East and the West was able to receive ideas from around the region and build upon them to create innovative products of their time. Through the exhibits, we also saw foundations of what we would consider modern technologies such as cinematography, automation, encryption and modern warfare. This also prompted an idea from the museum that they believe innovations grow in a circular manner (i.e. rise and decline) as compared to linear (i.e. build upon). Interesting concept, though we think it is more of the latter. In our first exhibit, we saw automation in action. When a priest entered the temple and little the fire in the middle of the courtyard, this fire would heat up the water beneath and trigger the opening of the door. Similarly, when the fire dies down the door closes. Although it uses the principles of conservation of energy and not entirely the automation that we know today, there are some similarities in wanting to achieve an outcome automatically (i.e. opening the door)... Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Nestled in Gouves, near Heraklion, CRETAquarium Thalassokosmos stands as a remarkable testament to marine life, showcasing over 2,000 creatures from more than 200 species native to the Mediterranean. This modern aquarium occupies a former military base and features an impressive array of 61 tanks that bring the underwater world to life.
Excellent aquarium! Wonderful place to visit if you like sea creatures and learning about the local aquatic environment. The place is incredibly well maintained and looked after too which was great to see. It is by no means a short trip, and thank goodness for all the seating! Some of said seats are right in front of the best of the larger tanks, mesmerizing to observe... There is also a restaurant at the aquarium which I fully recommend for authentic Cretan food (the beef giouvetsi was amazing). My wife thoroughly enjoyed her meal too, I do not remember the dish, but it was a vegetarian one. Lastly, I would recommend all three of the virtual reality shows. They are very interactive and hugely enjoyable. Whatever you do, end on "The Abyss", you'll see why. The staff were so accommodating and friendly.. Enjoy! 10/10

After reading the reviews, I didn’t want to go but changed my mind the last minute and it was absolutely worth it!!! I’ve been to many aquariums, and it’s one of the nicest and cosiest. Calming music, great light, variety of fish. Spent 1 hour. There are 62 tanks which is a lot!!! 👌😍
Kristina P — Google review
This was the fifth aquarium I've visited, so perhaps my expectations were too high. Unfortunately, the venue was very crowded with many children who were noisy and constantly tapping on the glass, despite clear signs asking for quiet. Staff were only present at the ticket counters, so there was no supervision within the exhibition itself to enforce the rules. The layout of the tour was also disappointing. The main attraction, the largest tank, is located right at the beginning. In my experience, you expect a spectacular finale, but here the climax comes far too soon. The digital information panels were another downside. The touch screens often lagged, and with only one screen serving several tanks, it was very impractical in the crowds. The gift shop was also unremarkable and felt just like a typical Cretan souvenir stall. However, there were some positives. The animals themselves are beautiful, and photos don't do them justice. I also learned a couple of interesting facts, for instance about the turtle nesting grounds on Crete, and that ammonite fossils were apparently used for discus throwing in the ancient Olympics. I was debating between giving 3 or 4 stars. However, after considering all the shortcomings and the €12 adult ticket price, I feel that 3 stars is the more appropriate rating.

We went with 2 small kids- the 2y didn’t find any point there but the 5y enjoyed it. I personally enjoyed looking at the fish types and felt most are very different and interesting to look at. The place needs a little maintenance- feel a bit old It’s not that big and didn’t spend a lot of time inside. We were staying at a hotel near by, not sure it worth a long ride.
Anat S — Google review
The aquarium is really nice, well maintained and there is a large variety of fish and sea animals 😍 First time I see sharks and tiny starfish 🥹 I also appreciated the section about biodiversity and ocean pollution. It is informative for kids and can be a good opportunity for a pollution awareness discussion with them. Good to know: -Opening hour is @10AM, make sure you buy your ticket online so you can avoid waiting in line. Otherwise, arrive really early as there can be a lot of families and tours scheduled for visits. We bought the tickets on the spot but had to wait around 20 mins in line to get them. -There is a large parking space outside the aquarium but places can go quickly if you arrive later than noon. -There is a large beach coast right in front of the aquarium so you can have a walk or a swim after your visit. -There are clean toilets inside and a space where you can have snacks and hot/cold drinks. Happy visit! 💫🤗

Spectacular, just check out the pictures. We decided to spend the time before our flight here and it was a great decision. So many animals to see, for a great price. In total we spent about 90 minutes here and another half hour outside at the terrace under the trees.

We had tickets in advance for this and the entry was quick. It is a pretty sizable aquarium, if you take your time to look around you may need about an hour. At the exist there is a small gift shop where you can get a little something to remember the experience. Inside there are all kinds of fishes and it would take way too long to name them all so I will add some photos. Great place to visit, expecially with kids.

Planet Crete is Europe's answer to the Kennedy Space Centre - a truly astronomical place. There was so much information at hand and I felt like I learnt alot. The gift shop was out of this world and sold a vast array of Star Wars lego sets which I found incredibly relevant as a tribute to Aunt Beru. One thing I would watch out for is the cut out of the space man that you can have a photo in. There is a chair behind it which I almost tripped up on. The staff member was incredibly helpful and offered a selection of movies for us to watch, unfortunately it would have meant waiting for 2 hours in the car park, so we left it for next time. The Planetarium is the main attraction but I think there is a Dinosaur park next door if you want to look through a window into prehistoric Earth. We saw one dinosaur on the way in and it looked just like those from Jurassic Park - watch out! Definitely worth the visit A++++.

Worth it for children and families. Also couples. Don't buy anything extra get the standard ticket. 5€ EXTRA for the VR for 5minutes is not worth the money. Dinosaur park good for children but outside in the heat. The science park is not worth it maybe spent time there while you wait for the movie of your choice inside the Planitarium Helpful staff, do it after the Aquarium... But definitely not worth the money in direct comparison to the aquarium

Dinosauria Park in Heraklion is a whimsical destination featuring life-size dinosaur replicas, fossils, and bones. The park offers interactive displays, educational games, and opportunities to excavate fossils. Visitors can also enjoy 3-D films and dining options within the park. It's an ideal spot for families with younger children who are fascinated by dinosaurs.
I loved it!!! Really brought out my inner child. I was extremely impressed with what was available for the location's standards. Overall a super fun experience with very sweet staff. The presentations were lovely and really informative. We went August 10th, which was my birthday, and although I was a grownup the lovely staff made it really special!! I didn't realize what the man in the reception did for us so I never got to thank him. Thank you so much for the wonderful experience and your sweet gift, if you see this!! Wonderful place especially for children and/or nerds like myself. ❤️ Extra bonus points for having vegan options at the restaurant!!! 🍴

It's ok this place, I wouldn't say it's the best. Again, we got there for opening time, was a nice staff member at the reception desk, very helpful. Amazing animatronics on the dinosaurs & facts with everyone you see around the park. Gift shop wasn't all that great could've had a lot more in there if I'm honest, but the food there was good. More so for kids so if you have a child, go there for a good day out.

We had a truly delightful experience. Our children, aged 4 and 6, were initially a bit apprehensive, but they quickly found their confidence and enthusiastically explored the park. While not expansive, the park is thoughtfully laid out and perfectly sized for younger visitors. The Dinosaur Hospital was a charming and educational highlight, sparking curiosity and smiles in equal measure. The science activity, offered for a modest additional fee of €5, was well worth it—engaging, hands-on, and informative. The entire venue is clean, well-maintained, and easily accessible. We also sampled the VR experience, which was enjoyable, though not essential to the overall visit. Though the park isn’t vast, it delivered a memorable day out filled with fun and learning—an excellent value for money and a hit with the whole family.
Yair W — Google review
Took my 9-year-old and 4-year-old here. Best day of the holiday. About €10 each to get in, which takes about 1 hour to explore and 30mins play at the end. But there is lots of extras to get. We spent the extra £5 each to explore the science area. Which was well worth it and we spend another hour in here. The dinosaures were amazing. The hospital tour was good. The kids had a great time. Well worth a visit.

Our son enjoyed the park, specially the doctor animation that was really nice. We did the cinema 5D where the first part was a bit out of context and the second part scared or 3 years old son. I would recommend this for kids at least 5 years old (?) It was calm, not many people, don’t need to book on the internet there was no queue at all
Julien R — Google review
We went during the morning with two kids (5,3 yo). They enjoyed it, we were there almost 3 hours. There are different activities that are available with no extra money (guess who? Puzzles, excavations, dinosaur hospital, playground). There are benches to sit and even some shade from the trees. At the end, we bought a pizza (tasting) from the restaurant and some games for the kids from the souvenir shop. The staff was friendly.
Alisa H — Google review
Spent the day here with my son and had the best time. There is so much to do! A dinosaur museum, the floor is lava, animatronic dinosaurs, a dinosaur hospital, science museum, planetarium, 5D cinema, VR experience. All the staff were friendly and helpful, and great food. Highly recommend.
Emily P — Google review
A little bit expensive for a family to visit but if you have a kid that likes dinosaurs it is the place to go. We just had the general ticket because our kid is only 3 years old and was more than enough. I would suggest the park to stop showing the video of a dinosaur chasing kids because our kid saw that and was afraid to enter the park after that 😅 They have good toys for sale as well

Ταβέρνα ΚΡΗΤΕΣ is a popular spot in Gouves, known for its fantastic Cretan Greek cuisine and friendly service. The restaurant offers traditional dishes like lamb and pork from the oven, goat meat with French fries, and baked sheep cheese. The portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable. Families love this place because of the kids' play area that keeps the little ones entertained while parents enjoy their meals.
Smashing local kitchen with traditional cretan Greek food! Extremely friendly and polite personnel who they provide excellent service! It sounds very sensible, that this tavern is very famous in the area of Gouves and not only! Additionally, the prices are very reasonable!

Visited yesterday with wife and two children (3 and half year old). Big place to play with 2 bouncy castles. Staff was very friendly and the food was good! We got bread before and fruits afterwards. Highly recommend with or without kids.
Jeroen G — Google review
TLDR- great food, great wine, bouncy castles, mobility-impaired friendly! Came for a wedding, loved it, and immediately brought the rest of the family to dinner here the next night. The food is amazing, I recommend the lamb and pork from the oven. The lamb was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The porc was so tender it could be cut with a straw! The kids play area works really well with my daughter and is certainly fine for any toddler on up. There is a toddler-specific bouncy castle and a child bouncy castle. This means we can watch the kids while eating in peace. As an added bonus, the changing table was accessible by men and not hidden away in the women’s WC like so many in Greece. The house wine (white) was delicious, crisp and dry. If you got this far, did you pick up on the two bouncy castles? What are you waiting for? Go eat at Taverna Krhtes!

Fountain
Sights & Landmarks
Historical landmark
Morosini Fountain, also known as Liondaria in Greek, is a 1600s Venetian fountain located at the heart of Heraklion. The fountain features eight cisterns adorned with stone reliefs depicting figures from Greek mythology, Nymphs, Tritons, sea monsters and dolphins.
Lion fountain ( looks like monkeys to me though)is located in the center of the square. It decorated with Venetian coats of arms, as well as with relief sculptures inspired by mythology and the sea world, including tritons, dolphins and nymphs. Though lions are uncommon in fountains, as they are not linked with water, they were used by the Venetians in this case as a symbol of their power.
A B — Google review
The main square is a lively place with lots of restaurants and shops around—perfect for a casual stroll or a meal. However, during our visit, the fountain wasn’t working, which was a bit disappointing. Still, the atmosphere and variety of places nearby made it worth the stop.
Christopher K — Google review
The fountain is nice. Beautiful carved frescoes all over. However, the fountain was never "on" in the 2.5 days I was there. At night, cockroaches come out of the cracks by the base. The fountain area is packed with tourists that give off a positive vibe and energy. Surrounded by restaurants all over the place and street shops hawking various wares. The fountain is at least 350 years old.

Great central location in Heraklion, Cretes capital city. Lots going on here, squares to sit and people watch, cafes, bars and restaurants plus shopping. If you're after historical- lots to see too. If you're looking for smaller and more picturesque, go to Agios Niklaus.
Martin B — Google review
A beautiful historic spot in the heart of Heraklion! The Liontaria Fountain, built by the Venetians in 1628, is full of charm and detail. The four lions, the flowing water, and the elegant carvings make it a perfect place to pause, take photos, and soak in the atmosphere. Still a lively meeting point for locals and visitors alike.
Ioannis D — Google review
The vibrant social spot where, even if you don't speak the Greek [never late to try it], you can melt right into the local life. Coffee shops in Greece are a true social institution, the kind Starbucks can only envy. Take your "frapé", sit back, and soak up the lively animated conversation and joy of the locals while tracing the ever lasting attempts of foreign powers to leave their marks in Hiraklion.

Lovely fountain, we stopped here on our guided tour of Herakleion. Fountain wasn't actually on when we visited so not as majestic as hoped. Still wonderful architecture.

Herakleion Central Market, located at the heart of Heraklion, is a bustling street flanked by various shops offering souvenirs, clothing, fresh produce, herbs and spices. The market also hosts small cafes and tavernas that add to its lively atmosphere. This historic market remains a popular spot for locals to find everyday items like clothing, herbs, fish and meat. Visitors can also discover local products such as honey and raki while exploring shops selling Cretan music and cheese.
Very interesting and traditional market to serve souvenirs, food and everything the tourists might need it. I enjoyed selling some of them and the Greek food was really delicious

GOOD FUN! The sellers/staff were friendly and welcoming. Lots of wonderful goods on offer and you can find plenty of holiday gifts. We found a shop selling lovely Olive oil bottles. There were 2 places offering food but plenty of other restaurants surrounding the market area. The sellers don’t hassle visitors and the prices seemed very reasonable. The area felt very safe, even though I never saw the Police walking about or in cars. Definitely worth a visit.

The Historical Museum of Crete is housed in a neoclassical building and offers a diverse collection of artifacts that provide insight into the history and culture of Crete. The museum showcases Early Christian and Byzantine sculptures, Venetian and Ottoman stonework, as well as items related to Cretan folk life. Notably, it is the only place in Crete where visitors can view the works of El Greco.
An excellent collection, wonderfully displayed, and coherently presented within a charming building. Truly, a hidden gem condemned to stay in the shadow of the magnificent archeological museum a few blocks away. If you can manage the time to pay it a visit, it will be well deserving of the time you commit to it.

I had an awesome time walking around the historical museum of Crete with two of my friends, and it was an awesome place to spend part of our small trip to Heraklion! The Natural History Museum of Crete, established in 1980, is a captivating destination for anyone eager to delve into the island's rich past. Spanning an impressive 3,500 m², it stands as the largest museum of its kind in the Mediterranean. Visitors can embark on a journey through various sectors including Zoology and Geology while marveling at dinosaur skeletons and engaging with interactive exhibits designed for all ages.
One of the best museums in Heraklion. Recommend for families and children. It has a really great view and is near the city centre (10min walk). They have a lot of discounts. The gift shop has really cute stuff too. Must visit if you want a more cultural experience in Heraklion.
Vkmariam — Google review
The only reason this museum has 4 stars instead of 5 is because it's still undergoing renovations! Do not let this put you off though! Any nature lover visiting Crete should come to this museum. Everything is translated into English and it is jam-packed full of information and wonders to explore and look at! As you enter there is a long row of lockers that are free to use so you dont have to carry your bags around with you (I really appreciated this). The museum is set out over numerous floors, so there are quite alot of stairs in the building but there are also lifts available. The discovery centre part of the museum I imagine is pretty useful for kids and school education groups. I imagine that once the renovations are complete this museum really will be in good condition. I thoroughly enjoyed all the specimens on display and the different modes of information being displayed (films, interactive panels, information panels etc).
Hannah's N — Google review
Interesting museum if you want to learn about the nature of Crete and the Mediterranean, however the main exhibits have not changed in as long as it has existed. It is located in a unique building of Heraklion which used to be a factory. It is right on the seaside but it unfortunately has no accesible viewpoints or balconies. I think it is worth visiting at least once though.
Johnkop4 — Google review
The museum is interesting for sure, but the live animals that are kept there are sadly in bad and unhealthy conditions. Enclosures seem dirty and the water they have is dirty too with algae growing in the drinking water and it just seems sad overall. I can not understand why live animals are treated like this especially in a place that has "museum" and "university" on the building. Take care of your animals.
Jesse K — Google review
Interesting museum but unfortunately the earthquake simulator was not open. Lots of stuffed animals on view but also some live ones. Spent about 1,5 hours there leaving a little wiser about Crete ( Greece) and its natural history. Worth a visit.
Mike S — Google review
Very informative. The stuffed animals look quite real. But what makes me very sad is that they exhibit live animals here. Half of the showcases are uninhabited or “Under Construction” because the animals are probably not doing very well here and are dying. Only freedom is species-appropriate!
Marcus A — Google review
Quite nice, but it was quite hot on the upper floors when we were there (September 2025). The earthquake simulator, which we were most looking forward to, wasn’t working.
Róbert P — Google review
The museum is currently under renovation, so some areas are closed, but it remains open to visitors. We had a wonderful visit and enjoyed the diverse educational exhibits about Crete’s nature and wildlife. The interactive displays and discovery center for kids make it a great experience for families. The building is unique and right by the sea. Some parts like the earthquake simulator are still being developed, but overall the visit was very rewarding and worth it.

Theme park
The theme park 'Age of Hercules' tells the story of the mythical hero Hercules in a modern setting. Visitors use virtual reality and augmented reality technology to experience his twelve feats.
This is a brand new attraction in Heraklion. We were a family of four (2 adults, a ~3 year old and a 9 year old) and the whole family enjoyed themselves. Our guide brought to life the 12 labours of Hercules and adapted the tour for the age of our children. The interactive games were a nice modern touch. I would not know in which category to place this attraction - it is neither a museum nor a theme park but an interactive and fun way to learn about one of Greece’s most famous heroes. Well done to our guide (or storyteller) who is clearly passionate about Greek mythology. Thanks for this great moment. I would highly recommend this attraction for adults and children.

Good experience, possibility to do the visit in English, that was very cool There is some VR games during the visit that was also very cool ! The explanation about the 12 labours was very clear and the guide was very nice with us ! It was a very good finish of our crete holidays, the visit/show is cool for adults but can be even better with childrens !

(Translated by Google) Super fun attraction for the whole family! Our guide managed to explain the 12 tasks of Hercules in a very interesting and interactive way. In addition to the beautiful large images, we also got to play video games with motion sensors and virtual reality. Everyone was happy, highly recommended.

(Translated by Google) Excellent experience. Hercules, the lion of Nemea, the Lernaean Hydra, the Stymphalian hens, all set up in a very beautiful and figurative way. The narrators are very descriptive, seem to love what they do and made us have a great time. The tour is 100% interactive, with the highlight of the Vr games they have. We highly recommend it. Beach
The beaches are huge, the sea is beautiful... I will share one of my experiences and a warning to people... Avoid swimming in the sea when the wind is blowing strongly and when there are waves, no matter how harmless they look... The waves move the sand in the sea, make huge holes and small hills, under the pressure of the waves at the speed of light you can find yourself in a huge problem... So relaxed and intoxicated by the beauty of the sea and the beach, I ended up in the eddies of waves that constantly pulled me into deep water at high speed... Luckily, I'm a good swimmer, I didn't panic, my body got tired of trying to get out, if my own brother hadn't been on the shore, I would have lost the battle with those waves... When I reached the shore, I was silent for a long time, I realized that I should celebrate life on that day, at that moment a man with a small child ended up in the same whirlpool that I was in before... My brother enters the scene again and helps them to come to shores... Be careful with the waves...

Sandy, shallow water. €6 for two lounge chairs and an umbrella. We came in October and had no trouble finding a spot but I imagine it’s busy in the summer.
Lisa L — Google review
It's a long beach with many taverns, small hotels and cafes. Go to the blue sky area where the service is perfect. Ideal for families as the sea is not so deep.

It's Beech next to our home. And it's not the best beach of course but it's very good with kids, shallow waters, soft sand to play with. We love to come here also of the season just to play relax and watch the sea
Greta M — Google review
Though not one of the best beaches in Crete, this one is a good beach for families, with lots of space, a good sea and reasonable prices. Several options for food are just across the road and parking is quite easy too (and free, on the road). If you want to get an umbrella and sunbeds, better get there before rush hour, which in August starts around 1130/1200.

Beautiful sandy beaches and shallow water. Very windy and waves during our visit. Love the cafes that offer free loungers and parasols on the beach with service orders.

Restaurant
Tavern Paximadi is a hidden gem in Crete that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Nestled near Gournes beach, this charming Greek tavern welcomes you with warm hospitality and a friendly atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home. The menu boasts an array of authentic dishes, featuring fresh fish and perfectly cooked meats, all served in generous portions at reasonable prices. Each meal is enhanced by traditional Greek appetizers that showcase the rich flavors of local cuisine.
Absolutely superb! We first discovered Paximadi by accident while visiting Gournes beach, and it quickly became one of the highlights of our trip. After our first meal, we simply had to return several times to enjoy more of the amazing food. The fresh fish and meat are prepared to perfection, always full of flavor and cooked with real care. Every dish is beautifully complemented by a wonderful selection of traditional Greek appetizers that truly capture the essence of local cuisine. What makes the experience even more memorable is Teo’s warm hospitality, which is always above and beyond. From the moment you arrive, you feel genuinely welcome and cared for, as though you are dining with friends. Paximadi is not just a place to eat—it’s a place to savor authentic Greek flavors, relax, and feel at home.

Very nice and traditional Greek place. Music was Greek which added to a Greek vibe. We came for dinner and it was really nice. Pork in mushroom and wine sauce was beautiful. Staff was attentive and friendly. Reason why I have to give 4 stars is because of little option for drinks. Menu had no cocktails and the bathrooms could be maintained a little better. Missing toilet seat in one toilet. Other taverns in the area offer great cocktail options. Unless there was a separate coctail menu and we were just not offered one. Overall, lovely location, atmosphere and food. Dessert and raki as part of fabulous Greek hospitality.

The best thing that could happen to you on vacation is Paximadi taverna. Incredibly delicious food, large portions for a reasonable price. You'll be greeted by the kind and cheerful Stefanio, and the taverna is so cozy and homey that you'll want to return again and again. I highly recommend it, you won't regret it. 👍

One of the best places we've been to! We had a late lunch – the food was excellent, super fresh and delicious. The sea view is an added bonus. Stefanos' service was exceptional! He helped us choose dishes that suited our dietary restrictions. In the end, he even made sure to find a cake that wasn’t on the menu because our daughter told him it was her birthday. An authentic experience – highly, highly recommended!

★★★★★ Amazing Tavern with Stunning Sunsets! We had an unforgettable evening at this lovely Greek tavern in Crete! The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. The food was absolutely delicious—authentic, fresh, and generously portioned at great prices. But the highlight had to be enjoying our meal while watching the breathtaking sunset. The combination of great food, warm hospitality, and the magical Cretan atmosphere made it a perfect dining experience. Highly recommend to anyone visiting the area!
