Greek restaurant
Karnagio / Pita tou Riga is a popular Greek tavern located near the picturesque lake of Voulismeni in the heart of Agios Nikolaos. This restaurant is known for its delicious pita gyros, a Greek street food favorite. Karnagio strictly collaborates with Cretan producers, using local herbs and products from villages around the Mirabello area.
Visited on a national holiday and despite the rush, this place had a queue while nearby restaurants were nearly empty, clearly a local gem. We waited just 10 minutes, and the owner personally managed the line with fairness and care. No skipping, no confusion, just respectful organization. Once seated, the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Even with the crowd, they never rushed us. The menu was full of delicious local dishes with plenty of variety. Portions were huge for us, but everything was fresh and flavorful. What stood out most was the atmosphere—warm, relaxed, and clearly loved by locals. We left full, happy, and already planning to return. Highly recommended. If you see a queue, don’t worry—it’s absolutely worth it!

Situated by the lake. Nice bright furniture. Best of all the food was excellent. Squid and octopus 🦑 fresh and tasty and very large plateful of food. Prices average and good friendly service. A must to visit at least once when in Ag Nik

Authentic food, large portions, reasonable prices and friendly quick service. We enjoyed a lovely lunch here. The menu is large and if we had time I would have loved to go again to try more items. The squid & zucchini had an amazing black garlic sauce - so delicious! The fried cheese with honey was hot, crispy and gooey. Highly recommended!

This restaurant deserves the hype. The food is excellent, the service is very fast, even when the restaurant is packed. However, what I truly disliked was the constant cigarette smoke that I sensed during the whole dinner. Being a terrace, smoking is allowed, but since the tables are so close one to another, it feels like your neighbor is blowing the smoke straight to your nose. This really made the experience not so enjoyable.

The most memorable dinner! The service and hospitality of the staff was unlike anywhere I have ever been. They were so welcoming and so kind. The service was lovely, the portions of food were generous and the prices were affordable. Reserve Karnagio for an unforgettable meal in Crete. Thank you so much!

AMAZING!!! We had such an amazing meal, it was packed but staff were attentive, chatty and caring. The food and the people were incredible. Mikaelis was a fantastic server!! Everyone was super friendly and it has made for a very memorable evening. Definitely one to go to if you’re in Agios Nikolaos.

We came to Karnagio after seeing many great recommendations, and it was definitely worth the visit. We waited in line for about 30 minutes, but once we were seated, the service was excellent and the food was delicious. It’s a bit loud and crowded, so not exactly a romantic spot - but we still really enjoyed the experience. The portions are generous and satisfying! We had the fried artichoke, which was a bit too salty for our taste, but everything else was just fantastic.
ספיר ד — Google review
Absolutely amazing. Very well priced plates with complex and rich flavours. After trying about 10 dishes, everything was absolutely delicious : fried calamaries, Moussaka croquettes, grilled octopus, amazingly tender veal stew, flavourful apaki, etc. Without mentioning the free appetizers and delicious desserts. It would be a mistake not to try this restaurant. I wish the owners would open a restaurant like this in Montreal - I would go all the time! Furthermore, the staff was great with kids and made us feel welcomed and appreciated. The restaurant is busy, but everything is perfectly orchestrated to be efficient and service is spot on. My boyfriend has travelled in over 50 countries in his life, eating in many different kinds of restaurants along the way, and this is now his favorite restaurant! Thank you so much for the memorable experience and compliments to the chef!

Bodies of Water
Lake Voulismeni in Agios Nikolaos, Crete is a popular tourist destination with a picturesque setting. According to legend, it is believed that the goddess Athena bathed in its waters. The lake is surrounded by charming tavernas where visitors can savor Cretan specialty dishes such as slow-cooked goat stew.
Very nice lake, especially during the night you can take some great pictures there. On one spot the rock and the water is illuminated with a purple light. This makes it look very cool during the night. There is also a small chapel next to the lake.

Lake Voulismeni in Agios Nikolaos is a charming and peaceful spot right in the heart of the town. Surrounded by cafes and restaurants, it offers a relaxing atmosphere with beautiful views.
Monika T — Google review
Wow. Simply amazing. Lake Voulismeni is the heart of the tourist town of Agios Nikolaos. If you enjoy the hustle and bustle of crowds, you can come here either for shopping or to eat at one of the lakeside terraces. If you prefer peace and quiet, the rocks around the lake are the perfect place to admire the light show from a distance. And if you’d like to dine somewhere calm, away from the noise of the streets between the lake and the sea, you’ll find a few secluded restaurants at the top of the rocks — where you can enjoy both the tranquility and the view. As a general rule, these restaurants tend to be a bit more expensive than the tavernas below. As a curiosity, the lake is no longer really a lake. In the mid-19th century, a powerful earthquake caused several surrounding rocks to collapse, one of which blocked the spring that fed it. Without fresh water, the beautiful lake became known as the “stinking lake,” so the Turkish governor of the island ordered a canal to be dug to the sea to renew the water. And, despite local legends, it's not bottomless either: the maximum depth is almost 50 meters (which is impressive anyway).

Beautiful and relaxing and I loved watching the local children play safely by the waters edge. Plenty of shopping to be had nearby with a vast array of bars and restaurants.

A very beautiful place with a nice small lake but very special, because it's twisting and connecting to the sea and beside the lake, there are very nice, romantic and authentic buildings. Also, it is very recommended to climb up the stairs and watch from above the lake.

Restaurant
Pelagos Fish Tavern is a renowned dining spot in Agios Nikolaos, known for its enchanting courtyard garden and elegant neoclassical mansion setting. It's considered one of the best fish taverns in the area, offering simply grilled fresh catches from the nearby harbor, accompanied by local vegetables and Cretan wines. The restaurant also serves winning salads with unique combinations and well-presented pasta dishes.
The beautiful place Macrame lamps, which make you feel at home, properly lit, but at the same time make you feel cozy and surrounded by trees and a fountain constantly sounding. Super clean and excellent prices. The delicious food flavors that I had not tried until now on our trip in Greece, after 10 days, Spicy, but at the same time very fresh and delicious. We ordered fried rice with prawns and they were delicious 10 out of 10, the delicious wine and the delicious Rocket salad, I would definitely return. To top it off, the waiters are super friendly and careful with the way they serve you.
María G — Google review
The food rating here is just because Agios Nikolaos is foodie heaven and there are places that do very (very) marginally better food for very marginally lower prices (I'd give it a 4.7 if I could) - so please don't let that bother you (I'm really comparing it with Avra, which just about nudges it for me on food). But it's the atmosphere that makes Pelagos really special - the courtyard is stunning and very relaxing. It might not have the sea or lake view that other places do but it's so much better. (Possible tip - my wife thinks we got better seats because she dressed up, but there's no dress code). The staff are great and there's also a very friendly cat who might be cheeky enough to swipe some food - he's adorable! One of the more well known places in AN but lives up to the high ratings.
Keith B — Google review
I visited Pelagos both for lunch and dinner. One of the highlights of this place, and a reason to come not only for the food, is the beautiful outdoor garden – especially in the evening when you can hear birds singing. It’s a very pleasant spot to spend time and certainly a nice place for a meal. As for the food – I would rate the tzatziki as decent, and the parsley starter turned out to be more of a sauce than a salad. The grilled octopus was good, while the moussaka was definitely the weakest dish. On the positive side, the sea bass was excellent – one of the best dishes I had.
Anna W — Google review
Pelagos is one of our favourite restaurants we’ve eaten in Agios. Lucky enough to get a lovely table inside, the rooms have high ceiling, and decorated With a Cretan classy charm. The food matched, the seafood recommended by the excellent head waiter was superb. Great products, expertly cooked, the chef knows what they’re doing here. Generous sea food linguine and delicious grilled prawns matched with a fine wine made for a memorable night. Thank you!
Patrick C — Google review
Liked this place. Great food, amazing courtyard/garden for eating, reasonably good value for a more upmarket Greek seafood experience. The prawn saganaki was a really good choice of dish. Recommended.
Dave S — Google review
I was a bit disappointed by the atmosphere of the place. Yes, the garden is nice, but when you get there, it lacks some air and flair. The proposal is very classic: I expected some more personality, maybe less dishes, but a more contemporary and refined menu. The service is very efficient and welcoming. Nice wine selection. It could be better, in the end.
Niccolò V — Google review
It is an elegant restaurant. The food was exceptional. The service was excellent and we received olives, bread and raki on the house. One of the best restaurants in the area.

Paralia Kitroplatia

Beach
Paralia Kitroplatia is a charming pebble beach nestled within the vibrant town of Agios Nikolaos, making it an ideal spot for both relaxation and recreation. Just 500 meters from the city center, this well-organized beach boasts crystal-clear waters and is surrounded by a plethora of shops, cafes, and restaurants offering delightful Cretan cuisine. While it can get busy at times due to its popularity, visitors can enjoy various water activities like jet skiing and scuba diving.
A very nice and relaxing beach. Smooth sand, beach showers, good restaurants and decent prices. We are so lucky we found this place so close to the port and the city center.
Kobi L — Google review
It’s small but I simply adored this deep water rocky beach. Sun beds but also a patch of shade on far side in afternoon. Lots of restaurants around too.
Courtney S — Google review
A small beach, very close to the tourist area of Agios Nikolaos Pros: The water is very clear and great for snorkeling (though not always — I’ll come back to this point below). The beach is right on the edge of the city, so you don’t need to drive. There are no big waves, not even when it’s windy and swimming becomes difficult on the open beaches. The area is full of restaurants and bars (which can also be a disadvantage). The view is beautiful, and an evening walk here is very pleasant — especially to admire the moonrise. Cons: Sometimes the water is full of plastic particles (probably brought in by sea currents). It’s a problem that affects the whole region — even the famous Voulisma Beach is covered with plastic debris. The beach is almost completely taken up by sunbeds, and the prices are quite high (higher than at the nicer beaches outside the city). If you arrive too late, you won’t find any free sunbeds, and there’s not much space left to lay your towel. Besides, the ground isn’t sandy but a mix of dirt and pebbles, which is quite uncomfortable. The water gets deep very quickly, even close to the shore. This isn’t a problem for confident swimmers, but it can be for others. The abundance of restaurants and bars, although convenient, was actually a bit stressful for me. I don’t enjoy swimming while being watched by people eating and drinking on the shore; I felt like I was on safari, only I wasn’t the visitor. During peak hours, walking along the shore can be difficult due to the crowds of tourists, especially near some very popular restaurants where queues tend to form.
Catalin H — Google review
A small but nice beach with sand and small pebbles and clear turquoise waters. A set of sunbeds is €10 for the day. You can order from the restaurants behind the sunbeds. The showers are very nice with great water pressure. There is one changing station.

Nice little beach in the heat of the town. The water is crystal clear when it's not wavey. There are rocks in the water. There is lots of shade in the afternoon which is nice.

Lovely little central beach surrounded by restaurants. Sand, small pebbles and clear water. Sunbeds affordable, public shower and a great service for disabled with a ”seatrack”

Small, cute and cosy beach with calm waters and warm water. Some of the best restaurants in Agios Nikolaos are right along the beach. You can take your pick and whatever you want. You can be served drinks right there at the beach.

Lovely small beach, sandy with a few small pebbles but clear water 2 sun beds and an umbrella are €10, you can also order food and drinks to your loungers from one of two restaurants depending on where you are sat, you also have access to their toilets which is handy. In Agios Nikolaos, Crete, visitors can find The Abduction of Europa Statue depicting the myth of Zeus transforming into a bull to seduce and abduct Europa. The statue is located near the seafront and offers a beautiful view. While some may find its surroundings less appealing due to its proximity to a parking lot and navy dock, it remains an interesting attraction for those interested in Greek mythology.
It is nice if you read a little bit of the story behind the statue.. or else makes no sense The bull represents Zeus that took Europa and brought her to Crete 😊 The location at the end of the parking lot is different, but that is Crete …

Palermo is a pizzeria located near the bustling Karnagio restaurant, offering an alternative to the long queues and aggressive sales tactics of other nearby eateries. The restaurant features a wood-fired oven and uses high-quality ingredients for its extensive pizza menu, which includes classic Italian and Greek options. Customers praise the crispy yet tender dough and commend the friendly and efficient service. While some recommend dining in for a cozy atmosphere, others suggest ordering takeout due to occasional issues with flies indoors.
Great food! We ordered the Palermo stuffed crust pizza and it was cooked to perfection. I’m not one to like stuffed pizzas, but the cheese was delicious. The salad that we ordered was also fresh and tasted very nice. Would definitely eat here again. Thanks!

Situated just off the lake area, adjacent to the very busy Karnagio restaurant. If you're looking to avoid the crazy queues at Karnagio or the hard sell from the other lakeside restaurants then Palermo pizza may be for you. Palermo has a wood fired oven, uses 00 flour/semolina for it's hand stretched bases. Pizza menu is extensive, covering the classic Italian, Greek and US options. Service is friendly, thoughtful and brisk. There are just 3 tables each seating 4 people on the deck opposite the restaurant kitchen. Food is tasty, well made and ingredients are of a good quality. Price for 3 pizza plus drinks is less than 50 euros, so great value for money.

Maistrali is a seafood restaurant in Agios Nikolaos that serves Mediterranean and European dishes. The restaurant has outdoor seating and offers gluten free and vegan options. It also has a full bar serving alcoholic beverages.
When I came to Greece, one of my primary goals was to eat a fish. I really, really wanted to munch down a fish. While here, I fulfilled that dream. I ordered the Sea Bream. It was the first time I was served an entire fish, head, eyes, and all, so I was a little bit uneasy, but once I surmounted the courage to dig in---the fish was DELICIOUS. It may have genuinely been the best cooked fish I've ever enjoyed. It's right on the shore, so the views are gorgeous. I felt really fortunate when I was led to a quiet table overlooking the water. Service was friendly. I feel like I personally wasn't checked on often, but I was a solo diner, and I find that's a standard experience most restaurants I go, so I won't hold it against the staff. They were really friendly with larger parties, the table next to me were from Poland and they were immediately offered a menu in Polish (which, apparently, served Leprechaun due to an incorrect translation! I'm mentioning it because it was endearing and the server shared a good laugh about it). A poor, sweet, stray, starving cat joined my table and sometimes tried to climb up onto it to steal my food. This may bother some people but I love cats and I was delighted to have a "date." I primarily just felt bad for how hungry the poor fellows were.
Katrina B — Google review
A fancy Greek restaurant with see view. A menu with fair prices. We had the trilogy of spreads and after some grilled fish. The kids had the stuffed burger. All freshly made with awesome bread and fries. At the end, we got a small but awesome desert from the house! Thanks for the hospitality!

It was OK. I felt it was a bit of a “fad” trendy place to go to. Very busy and gets a lot of footfall. We were told it was one of the best in Ag Nik and honestly we were disappointed. Food was average and didn’t seem to have as much effort as some of the more traditional tavernas, very modern inside. Staff were well presented but again lacked the personality or welcoming nature of other traditional Greek restaurants locally. The lamb tortillas were quite poor / really poorly presented visually, just folded over small wraps with shredded lamb, and nothing inside, also cold. Fried cheese balls were nice but very cheesy, you get them everywhere here. Chicken salad was again nice enough but like something you could get in any restaurant. Cretan garlic cheese bread was average. Nothing was more than lukewarm. Other people were offered the loukomades as a complimentary dessert and we weren’t as a couple. We then ordered the baklava and it was probably the best thing about the meal, lovely.

The food at Mastrali was absolutely amazing! Every dish was bursting with flavor, the portions were incredibly generous, and the overall quality was outstanding. Truly one of the best meals I've had in a long time. The only downside was the service at the beginning — it was a bit chaotic. We weren’t really shown to a table properly, and it took some time before things settled. It felt a bit disorganized at first. That said, the atmosphere was lovely and once we were seated, everything else was just fantastic. I’d definitely go back for the food alone — it’s well worth it!

A charming seaside spot serving delicious, authentic Cretan dishes. Maistrali offers fresh, flavourful food with generous portions, that standout. The staff are friendly and welcoming, creating a relaxed, homely atmosphere. Add to that the beautiful sea views, and you’ve got the perfect setting for a leisurely meal. Overall a great choice!
George M — Google review
By far the best I have eaten in Crete. The menu is just a little bit different from other traditional restaurant. But everything is full flavored and well prepared. The fact that the restaurants house style is visible in little things like the napkins and plates really tops it off. Oh and by the way… tables are practically on the beach which completes the holiday feeling.

My partner and I had a wonderful dinner experience at Maistrali Taverna in Agios Nikolaos. Highlights: - Staff: Very attentive & welcoming, - Food: So delicious, fresh & nicely-prepared, - Ambience: Wonderful ambience with the taverna situated in a lively street in Agios Nikolaos. We ordered a Greek Salad, Tzatziki, and each of us Salmon with Couscous - all of which we can highly recommend! Thank you for the nice experience, Team Maistrali! We will definitely come back!

Maïstrali, located in Agios Nikolaos, was one of the most pleasant surprises of our trip. It’s a restaurant that honors traditional Cretan cuisine, but with a modern, gourmet twist — nothing pretentious, just high-quality food with great respect for local ingredients. We tried the skioufihta pasta with slow-cooked beef ragout — rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The pork steak (“stamna” style) was juicy and well-grilled, while the beetroot salad was refreshing and creatively prepared. We also loved the traditional little pies served with tzatziki — a simple yet delicious highlight to start or end the meal. The service was kind and attentive, and the prices were very reasonable considering the quality and care that goes into each dish. To top it all off, they treat you to complimentary loukoumades drizzled with chocolate — a sweet and generous gesture that perfectly rounds off the experience. If you find yourself in Agios Nikolaos and are looking for an authentic yet refined culinary experience, Maïstrali is definitely worth a visit.

Embassy is a hidden gem, tucked away from the tourist hustle and bustle. This cozy, family-run restaurant has been serving up delightful dishes for over 30 years. The aroma of the charcoal grill fills the air as they offer an interesting and well-balanced menu. Visitors rave about their delicious starters, mouthwatering octopus, and unforgettable lamb dishes.

Amazing little place. Great atmosphere, great service, great food! We were all inclusive at a nearby resort bust still chose to spend our last 2 evenings eating here. Authentic feel and the staff are amazing. You can see and chat to the owner as he cools away on the grill while overseeing his restaurant. A relaxed family feel and the food was outstanding. Good quality, well cooked, well flavoured and ample portion. My recommendation would be the rabbit..next level! The local wine is top notch also. A must go if you are anywhere near Agios Nikolas

I’ve been to Creta Embassy several nights in a row, and each visit was a real pleasure. The food is outstanding – I tried Stifado, Kleftiko, Gyros and Cheese Balls, and every dish was full of flavor and cooked with great care. You can tell that the restaurant is family-run; there’s this genuine warmth and attention to detail that makes you feel welcome right away. The garden is beautiful – lively, full of people, good music playing, and a wonderful atmosphere that invites you to stay longer than planned. Everything just fits together perfectly here: the food, the setting, the people. It’s the kind of place you look forward to coming back to.

Great little restaurant, friendly staff and quiet off the seafront. Salmon and chicken souvlaki were delicious and we loved the decor of the restaurant. Good menu and not too expensive! Highly recommend

Nice garden restaurant and friendly staff. Food was not meeting expectations, garlic bread was an industrial bread from supermarket freezer. Grilled prawn was quite nice, but the sidedish on the plate was nothing special.

Kleftiko was best of the week (and top5 of all) and Lamb shank especially the sauce was out of this world, I licked the plate when nobody was watching 🤣 Chef cooking and meeting friends in the end, proper Greek way🥳 also using hair dryer to fire up coals in the grill 🤣🤣 Great staff 👌 Efcharisto poli

Cafe
Zygos Urban Garden in Agios Nikolaos is a delightful spot overlooking the lake, offering excellent food and a wonderful atmosphere. The service is kind and attentive, making for a great dining experience. Visitors rave about the delicious dishes like the soba noodle bowl with honey, soy, and ginger dressing, as well as the perfectly grilled pork tenderloin with aromatic mushroom sauce. The generous dessert portions, such as the lemon lava cake, are highly recommended for sharing.
Great food and drinks! 😊 The atmosphere near the lake is really beautiful - great brunch spot for sure! The smoothies were a little tasteless but all the rest was really delicious😊 We went for brunch twice and really recommend the chicken burger! The staff is friendly although not always attentive. Fair prices as well😊

This café by the lake in Agios Nikolaos is a lovely spot to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The garden is charming, creating a peaceful and inviting atmosphere. The food is of good quality, with fresh ingredients and well-prepared dishes, all at moderate prices. Whether you’re stopping by for a coffee, a light meal, or a drink, it’s a great place to unwind and take in the scenic views. A perfect choice for a laid-back experience in a picturesque setting!

Don't go to any other place around here. Great value for money. Huge plates filled with yummy food. Impeccable service with a great view. You couldn't ask for anything more!

Manages to have an excellent green space and a trendy environment at the lakeside! Importantly it avoids being a tourist trap like many of the other restaurants with reasonable prices and great food and arguably better views of the lake. Highly recommended.

Food was wonderful! We tried the egg croissant, triple rye chicken sandwich, and the red velvet pancakes. Everything was very fresh and delicious, but the red velvet pancakes truly stood out! The location and atmosphere is wonderful, we went there for breakfast, but I’m sure their lunch & dinner menus are phenomenal! Breakfast is served between 09:00-12:30, and everything else continues to be served until 23:30. Highly recommended!

This place is an absolute must-visit if you're in Crete! Set right next to the beautiful Lake Voulismeni, Zygos Urban Garden offers not only stunning views but also a relaxing and stylish outdoor space under the trees, perfect for a sunny lunch or chilled drink. We tried: 🍤 Shrimp tacos – fresh, flavorful, and beautifully plated 🍗 Grilled chicken souvlaki with potatoes & feta – juicy, rich in flavor. 🍦 Homemade ice cream – creamy and refreshing, perfect for the summer heat 🍹 Matcha iced latte & ineapple margarita both tasty. The service was friendly and welcoming, and everything we ordered was presented with care. Great spot for foodies, couples, or anyone who appreciates good vibes and beautiful lake views.

Day 2

Proximity is everything
For day 2, we bundled attractions like Voulisma beach and Archaeological Site of Gournia and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 7 hours.

Outdoor Activities
Voulisma Beach, also known as Istro Beach, is a popular destination with its white sandy shores and stunning turquoise waters. This organized beach attracts families and water sports enthusiasts alike. Located near the bustling city of Agios Nikolaos, it's easily accessible by bus. The semi-circular cove offers swimming, umbrella rentals, and boating opportunities. Visitors can combine their beach trip with a visit to the charming capital of the Lassithi region.
Absolutely fabulous! I loved it. I went to Elafonisi too, but this gives me way more of that perfect beach vibe. There are three or four small beaches that, in my opinion, are better than the big one that’s on the right. A MUST!
Meloquence 7 — Google review
Beautiful turquoise beach, but very narrow with almost no space for towels. Sunbeds & umbrella cost €30. Stunning from above, but the water was full of plastic — the dirtiest I’ve seen in Greece.
Alexandru S — Google review
Amazing beach! I’d recommend it to everyone. It’s even great for snorkeling. The beach strip is a bit narrow, but still large enough to enjoy. I wouldn’t suggest renting a sun lounger; it’s much nicer to just relax on your towel. Prices for jet skis and the banana boat are far too high, but apart from that this is truly an AMAZING beach, one of the best I’ve ever been to.
Damian P — Google review
Great location, but definitely not worth paying €30 for sunbeds. We didn’t try the service because the price felt like outright exploitation. The beach is completely covered with sunbeds and no free space is left for free swimmers.
D D — Google review
One of my favourite beaches on Crete, super clear clean water. Lovely restaurant above too, a must if your staying in area.
Stephen G — Google review
One of the most beautiful beaches in Crete — and, at the same time, a sad example of how quickly people can destroy nature. Positive points: Fantastic view... and that's about it. Negative points: The main beach is just a very narrow strip of sand, almost entirely covered with sunbeds. Not only are the prices quite high, but if you don't arrive early, you risk not finding a free spot. The beach is littered with small pieces of plastic. On windy days (like the one when we visited), the waves are very strong, making swimming almost impossible. Additional suggestion: If you're looking for a quieter area, go to the left side of the beach, where the shoreline forms some natural booth. There, you'll find a private beach with sun loungers (although the prices are pretty high) as well as enough space to lay your towel.
Catalin H — Google review
Voulisma Beach has white sand and fantastic crystal clear turquoise and blue waters. It’s no less beautiful than famous Balos beach in the west. You can enjoy water sports like water skiing. Prices are affordable. 2 sun-beads and umbrella are 15 euros.
Nada S — Google review
The beach is beautiful and have comfortable parking, the sand feels good on the legs. One problem is that in the main beach on the right is very dirty, we went in and it was disgusting. Other then that very relaxing

The Gournia Minoan Town is an archaeological site that was excavated in the early 1900s. It features ancient Minoan houses, roads, and a cemetery. This historical landmark is situated along the National Road and has only three admissions. Despite limited information available through panels, visitors can enjoy the beauty of this place with some preparation as it closes at 3:30 pm.
This place is exceptional and far better than Knossos. Whilst the remains are all basement/ground floor level the layout is incredible. Streets, houses, workshops, shrines and the palace are all evident. The information boards, whilst not many, were good. You get to wander around the site; no barriers and you can get to know it well. It's €3 per person. Parking on the side of the gravel entrance track, just off the main road, is free. There is a WC but no cafe when we visited. Definitely worth seeing.
Philip R — Google review
Amazing ruins of an ancient Minoan City, maybe the most complete remains of a city in Crete, surely much more authentic than the Knosso palace. Few people stop here and therefore the atmosphere is very calm and inspiring. Some explanations along the roads provide enough explanations about the city and the ways of living of the Minoans, really a surprising culture. The entrance fee this summer is 5 euro (+2 against 2024). Very close to the road 90. Parking is available but wild. WC available.
Arrigo V — Google review
I was very impressed with the Minoan site at Gournia. At Knossos, the focus is on the aristocrats and ruling class. In contrast, Gournia was a manufacturing and transportation hub with its own seaport. The difference is immediately apparent. The site is clearly marked with signs and is straight forward to tour. The site is very close to the old port. The range of manufacturing is pretty impressive. This should be a key stop to gain a better understanding of the Minoans, not just the ruling class.
Forrest T — Google review
Really interesting. €3 entrance fee at a small visitor centre which claims to have a café and WC but I didn't see them. A leaflet or guide would be good as there are only a few boards up around the site. Having said that we enjoyed wandering around and trying to imagine what the town looked like!
Linda W — Google review
Well worth the €5 entry fee. Fascinating site.
Prue H — Google review
It must have been a big and wealthy palace during Minoian times. Now, once you have seen one of those places, assuming you are not a professional in archeology or antient history, you would not be so impressed with the next ones. The sacred stone in the middle of the antient street is worth seeing.
Luba D — Google review
Easy access, very interesting, quite, archeological site, at a nice location. I recommend to avoid visiting during summer in order to make the most out of your visit, due to the unbearable heat. Otherwise, as much early in the morning as possible.
John B — Google review
This small but well preserved Minoan city is a beautiful walk of around half an hour with great views over the sea. It is one of the most interesting excavations in Crete, as most of the other sites on the island focus on the palaces. You can let yourself get lost in its narrow streets and walk inside some remarkable remnants of a winemaking room, a basement and a few more rare spaces. They are Tuesdays closed. Don’t forget the sunscreen.

Ammos is a popular beach destination located in Agios Nikolaos, Crete. It is known for its stunning waters and soft white sand, making it an ideal spot for visitors to relax and enjoy the sunshine. The beach offers sun loungers and umbrellas for convenience, as well as beach bars and restaurants for a day of fun by the sea.
Really nice beach, 10€ for 2 sun beds and the umbrella. The beach is small but with fine sand and cristall clear water.

Lovely sand and clear water sea surrounded by several lunch and drink spots. 2 sun beds are €8 or €10 with an umbrella ⛱️☀️ The water isn’t exactly warm and there are a few stones but lovely little beach!
Amy L — Google review

SOFIA X — Google review
nice sandy beach. 2 sunbeds and a parasol for only €10
Audrey F — Google review
Beautiful. Reasonable prices in the cafes around and no matter where you sit, it’s only 10 euros for the two of you. The nicest beach is the one north 20 mins away but it’s a lot more expensive! This is reasonable and perfect for swimming. It’s very chilled and quiet.
Stephanie B — Google review
The beach is quite unattractive; apart from being right next to the city, it has little else to offer. On the side with umbrellas and sunbeds, the prices are high. There is a free area, but the ground is covered with stones, making it uncomfortable to lie down. In the free area, the water gets deep very quickly because, being part of the port, it’s not really a swimming area but more like a series of navigable channels. The good part is that, thanks to the wavebreakers, there are no waves at all — the water is as calm as in a swimming pool. If you decide to eat at one of the nearby restaurants, be careful and check the reviews first, as one of them is a clear scam. They tried to sell us a cheap wine — the same one you can find in supermarkets for €2–3 — at the outrageous price of almost €50. On top of that, the bill was much higher than the actual value of what we had ordered.
Catalin H — Google review
Nice beach with plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas. The water is clear, it gets deep rather quickly. A set of 2 sunbeds+1 umbrella costs 14 euros in the firts 2 rows, the rest are 12 euros. There is a parking nearby. Easily reached from Malia by public transport. Surrounded by tavernas and bars, a supermarket nearby.
Elena P — Google review
Wonderful beach. Dimitrios will rent you a bed with umbrella for €7 or €8 and tell you all about the neighbourhood (and more) if you like. Cafe/bistro with delicious drinks and food nearby, lounge music. All you need for a relaxed day at the beach ;)

BLE Katsarolakia is a popular dining spot located in one of the town's oldest neoclassical buildings, offering a lovely setting beside the lake and sea. The restaurant features modern decor, harbor-side views, and an extensive menu with recommended dishes like octopus, souvlaki, grilled meats and vegetables on skewers. Vegetarian options such as salads, halloumi, and tzatziki are also available.
As a vegetarian it’s sometimes hard to get nice food when eating abroad. But here is brilliant, great traditional food and a great atmosphere. The owner and staff are really nice and the food is amazing. For me it was miles ahead of other restaurants in the town. Overlooking the harbor, Katsarolakia is a must visit.

*** updated review 2022 I am very sorry to say that the food a few nights ago was nothing like last year. This used to be one of our favourite restaurants in Agios Nikolaos. But now we had Crazy overcooked pasta, dry octopus, terrible just terrible risotto, dry fava, and so much garlic to "cover" the bad food. Very disappointed. Apparently the chef changed, so the menu was also completely different. We asked to talk to the manager, but he was not willing to talk to us. On the positive side, the servers were very polite and understanding, and the 4 plates out of 14 we ordered, the ones that we did not eat and complained about, were deducted from our bill. Deserts and fruit were also on the house. Honestly, I m actually really sorry to change my review, as we all loved this place the previous 2-3 years. But the truth is, better avoid this place, as its not really cretan or modern Greek cuisine anymore... Just another touristic restaurant... *** Review 2021 Modern cretan cuisine very well executed, great service, in one of the most beautiful garden terraces of Agios Nikolaos. The building itself has a rich history you can find out about + an impressive wine cellar built in what used to be an exit tunnel... Definitely worth mentioning that our group's steaks were perfectly cooked (medium-rare). Make sure to keep some space for deserts

I have spotted this place form my previous visit to Votsalo beach and I was spot on! The place is usually pretty busy and we were informed that there might be a delay in service. From sitting to eating we waited for less than 30 minutes, so the kitchen and service work like a charm. The tastes and cooking were great, you can easily find imperfections in almost every restaurant but here we found none. Well prepared dishes, solid flavors, and to the spot cooking times. Will visit again for sure!

Piato is a renowned restaurant located in Agios Nikolaos, Crete. This dining establishment has garnered praise for its incredible dining experience and is considered one of the best restaurants in the area. Visitors to Agios Nikolaos often seek out Piato for its exceptional cuisine and inviting ambiance. The restaurant's popularity is evident from the numerous positive reviews it has received, making it a must-visit destination for those exploring the culinary scene in Agios Nikolaos.
Piato was amazing! The atmosphere was stunning and serene and reminded me of being in the 50s. The food portions were very fair and the dishes were all fantastic. Wine suggestions and education were great. Don’t forget to explore the secret wine cellar that is converted from WW2!
Ashlea C — Google review
The staff at Piato were friendly and the service was quick. Overall, the atmosphere was nice. Unfortunately, the food was extremely poor. I ordered a medium steak, but it arrived rare to medium-rare. It had already been sliced and was covered in sauce, so I didn’t ask for it to be recooked. Our table was needed back soon, so we ate quickly and left. I did speak to a waiter about the issue. He said he would pass on the feedback to the chef, but nothing else was done. For a restaurant that presents itself as high-end, this was very disappointing.
Richard G — Google review
Had an amazing dinner at Piato last night with two good friends and it was my birthday (secretly!), and even though I hadn’t told anyone, the staff surprised me with dessert, a candle, music, and all came out singing Happy Birthday! Totally unexpected and so heartwarming. 🥹🎉 The food? Absolutely incredible!!! every dish was a hit, and the waiters knew exactly what they were serving…. Overall beautiful atmosphere, great selection of music, perfect weather, 10/10 vibes. Only note: the coffee… guys, let’s talk 😜that Nespresso was more like a Greek coffee in disguise😂🥸😋 next time, give it a little kick! 🤭 Still, one of the best nights I had experiencing in Crete!!!! Thank you, Piato! 💛

Stunning atmosphere on the balcony. Creative delicious food and good service. I wish I’d been with more people to try more dishes ! I had the beet salad and bread appetizer.
Lucy M — Google review
Me + my best friend ate at Piato on our last night dinner (suggested by a local) and it was such a disappointment. The restaurant has nice decor and seemingly nice staff but the food was absolutely atrocious. The two starters had hardly any flavour and just so random, we barley ate them. The fish main course was average. When we tried to give constructive feedback, our server was blatantly not interested. The salad and chips I had for lunch at Cafe Zygos by the lake earlier in the day was ten times better ! Would not recommend unless you enjoy wasting money on 'food'.
Amber A — Google review
Piato in Agios Nikolaos is a great place to dine. The food is fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented, and the service is warm and attentive. A highlight of the evening was being shown their hidden underground wine cellar, which added a unique touch to the visit.

What a fantastic restaurant. I found the suggestion on Reddit where a chef said it was his favorite local restaurant. Incredible food, a warm & friendly staff, and the view over the harbor from the balcony is very pretty (though the garden area looked lovely too!). We shared chickpea croquettes as a starter, hubby had grilled lamb and I had the seafood spaghetti (amazing!!) and we finished with rizogalo (rice pudding) which he loved and I had Avery light & fruity ekmek. All so, SO good. Just go here, you too will thank the good people of Reddit for the recommendation!!

We were 3 people - For a 8 slices Pizza, caprese Salad, big grilled gilthead / dourade with a side dish, a bottle of Rosè Wine and a bottle of water, we paid 87€

A great authentic restaurant that serves Italian and Greek dishes. The atmosphere is nice and the servers are especially welcoming. They give you some small compliments to your dish (like hummus, watermelon), which is very nice. Would recommend if you're in the area.

Nestled just across from the stunning Voulisma Beach, Taverna Kávos is a delightful gem that captures the essence of traditional Greek dining. This charming tavern boasts an array of classic Mediterranean dishes, making it a haven for both meat lovers and seafood enthusiasts alike. Signature offerings include the mouthwatering Greek lamb kleftiko, alongside fresh calamari, grilled seafood platters, and delectable moussaka.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We were a large group of family and friends dining here yesterday, and the experience was fantastic! The host was incredibly spontaneous, welcoming, and helpful, making us all feel right at home. The food was delicious—every dish was flavorful and well-prepared. They even surprised us with a special gesture for those we were celebrating, which truly made the evening memorable. The restaurant also has a great play area for kids, perfect for our group with little ones. The atmosphere was warm, friendly, and inviting. Highly recommend this place!

My wife and I dropped in for dinner — the place looked cozy and had a beautiful view of the sea. We were greeted with a really warm welcome. We ordered cheese balls with tomato jam, a Caesar salad, and fried squid with aioli. Everything tasted great! After the meal, they treated us to a delicious strawberry panna cotta and some of the house raki. We can definitely recommend this restaurant.

Day 3

North side of town
For day 3, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with Spiridi Olive Oil Farm, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

The Cretan Olive Oil Farm is a charming destination just north of the town center, offering a blend of tranquil farm experience, living museum, and hands-on traditional skills activities. Visitors can explore the small farm at their own pace, gaining insights into olive oil production processes and strolling through the beautiful olive orchard and herb garden. The farm also offers tours of its groves and production facilities, complete with tastings, as well as classes in cheese-making and Cretan cooking.
We had a lovely trip here to learn more about Crete and its farming including olive oil production, wine, herbs, sun dried tomatoes, cheese & honey. The e-tour lasts about 1 hour and and is great value. We tried many olive oils & honey as well as other produce in the shop. We will come back again for a pottery or food class.

Everything was great! Maybe only the self paced tablet guide was a not so great, the machine voice reading the text was a bit dull. We had a small live presentation at the press, thats was awesome. The staff is very friendly, the produce is very tasty.
Dans V — Google review
amazing place we booked our tickets for three hour session to milk a goat and make a cheese learn about olives and do a cooking session. It seemed quite expensive when you look at it on the face of the ticket €65 however it was worth every penny we got to eat the food. It was amazing what we learn about the goats and the cheese and all about olives. Highly highly recommend it worth a lot more than €65 people unbelievably friendly lots of other things to see and to do. there’s a shop there with products in it lots of them made by them there and there’s free tasting is of honey and olive oil and other products.
Steven D — Google review
We had booked the olive oil production workshop and had a very insightful and lovely time! We learned about olive trees, the history of the trade and the harvest until we got our hands dirty to actually grind some olives and press them in their press! Feel very honoured they let us touch this piece of history - was certainly an experience! We also got to take a look at some local plants like dittany, carub and aloe, we tasted some olives and raki, all while learning about the meaningful role of olive oil on the island. After the official part of our workshop we got to taste all kinds olive oil, olives, vinegards, carub products, etc in their shop and could even get more info. They are a family farm and offer all kinds of other experiences as well, like cooking or pottery and honestly I love how they made such a business out of the place about their familiy's culture and heritage. Everyone was very friendly and caring to share their knowledge. You could also wander the grounds after and it's a really lovely place. Of course the workshop wasn't super cheap but totally worth the experience and I would also recommend just to visit and take the little tour.
Sloth F — Google review
Absolutely brilliant! We came to learn more about olive oil production but we got so much more? From history to tasting, learning about quality of oil and leaving with incredible products such as olive paste and raki! I wish I could be there every day, it's incredible

Such lovely people who gave us a very warm welcome and explained about their family farms history. We had tablets with an English commentary to explain the different parts of the site. There are so many lovely things available to buy you at reasonable prices. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit and learnt alot too.

Amazing experience! We did the e-tour for €7 each which was well worth the money - able to tour the farm at your own pace and learn lots of interesting information about olives, cheese and wine! Staff are very friendly and helpful, and the shop has lots of great organic produce from the farm to taste and buy! Would highly recommend visiting!

Outdoor Activities
Havania Beach is a lovely sandy beach located in the northern outskirts of Agios Nikolaos, on the road to Elounda. It is an organized beach with nearby restaurants and offers great snorkeling opportunities close to the shore. The beach is suitable for young children as it is not too deep, but it can be quite rocky near the shore, so water shoes are recommended. At about 1.
Havania beach is slightly rocky. If you want to stay in water within chest consider to wear swimming boots. There is parking for around +/-25 cars. There is wc, cafeteria and sun ambrella for rent with two beds (15€).
Gints R — Google review
Beautiful beach, not over busy. Has a really lovely relaxing vibe. Really friendly and can’t do enough for you. Great freddo cappuccinos!
Julia R — Google review
If five stars is a beach with a wow factor, Havania lands at a solid 3.5. We spotted it from our terrace across the mountain and decided to use a rest day to check it out. It has all the conveniences: sunbeds, showers, a bar — and if you go in the late afternoon (around 17:00, like we did), you can park almost at the entrance. Very easy. The downside: wind and waves stir up a lot of sand, so the water isn’t crystal clear. The upside: no plastic floating around. Big plus. The beach itself is small. The sandy entry point is narrow, while the rest is covered with big pebbles, which makes getting in and out tricky without water shoes. Not a wow, but perfectly fine for a lazy afternoon.
Ira H — Google review
A very lovely small but clean beach. Not very crowded. You have everything you need: sunbeds, shower, toilet, bar, wifi. The water is clean. I have seen a lot of if Greek beaches, and I liked this one. Recommended.
Dmitrii S — Google review
Just visited Havania beach this morning. There are no sunbeds or parasols at all. There is a door that says sunbeds 15€, but inside is a very dilapidated sink and toilet with no water. The toilets next to this are in an awful state, again no running water, and rusted taps. There is an outside showering point, but with no water supply, so not working. The cafeteria is closed and doesn't look like it's been used in months. Just be aware there is no shelter at all. Mixture of pebbles, rocks and gravel until you get out a couple of metres where there is sand. Swimming shoes are a good idea.
Ian J — Google review
Nice little sandy-rocky beach close to Agios Nikolaos. More beautiful than the beach in the town. Dogs are allowed. Sunbeds (10€/set) and service available. Also a shower, changing room and decent toilets are there to use.

Great little market on Wednesdays. Not far from the local bus stop (last stop). Freshly grilled souvlaki at the start. From olive oils to honey, tshirts to vegetables and souvenirs. You’ll find all the local products there. It’s an amazing experience and the people are really friendly.

Every Wednesday with a great selection of fresh produce, some of it organic. The sellers are friendly and helpful - it’s fun to shop there and you often get surprises like extra items and wares without charge. Right at the top end you can get fresh grilled Souvlaki. At the lower end all kinds of everything and then tons of clothes - if you love rummaging, this is a great place for you to search for that one missing piece in your wardrobe !

Very small selling mostly fruit and vegetables, 2nd hand clothing a few touristic stalls. Best waiting for the normal shops open just off the lake, great choice and very reasonably priced. We were in Elouanda so approx. €17 taxi each way. Some lovely beaches here too €10 for 2 sun beds & umbrella shade!

Excellent array of fresh fruit and veg (and clothes) which is very reasonably priced - much cheaper than in shops. Just pick out your chosen product, put in a bag, and hand to the stall holder, who will weigh it and price it. The fresh feta stall is a must-try, it’s delicious.

The Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos is a must-visit attraction in Crete, showcasing the region's history from the Neolithic era to Greco-Roman finds. It features remarkable exhibits such as the Goddess of Mirtos, a significant discovery from the Bronze Age settlement at Fournos. The museum displays an impressive collection of artifacts and provides informative insights into the area's rich archaeological heritage.
Nice designed museum that we could not finish in 1.5 hours due to it closing at 15:30. There are artefacts from the bronze age and much older. We never knew there were so many archeological sites on the island of Crete. If you are really interested, you will need 2.5 hours at minimum to read and see everything inside the museum.
Tim T — Google review
Cracking little museum that's well worth a visit for the €10 entrance fee. They also rotate some exhibits with the main one in Heraklion and there's loads of interesting information if (like us) you don't drive and don't fancy schlepping back to the main city. Very friendly and helpful staff, which seems to be the norm on Crete, and a great way of ducking out of the heat for a couple of hours. Just be aware that it closes at 15:30.

The museum is well worth a visit. Though it isn't very big (which I think is an advantage), it houses an impressive collection of artefacts and archaeological findings. The stuff is very friendly and welcoming. You get tasty traditional greek meals, made with love. Like grandma would make it. It is worth a visit.
Melvina K — Google review
The portions here are good-sized, so you definitely won’t leave hungry. However, the taste of the food was just average—not quite what you'd hope for from a classic Greek taverna. The service started off well; the staff were friendly and attentive when we arrived. Unfortunately, once the food came out, the service dropped significantly. One waiter was smoking at the bar, another disappeared completely, and a third was sitting and drinking. This kind of behavior makes you feel like customers only matter until the order is placed and paid for, which is disappointing. Attention to service after seating is crucial, and this kind of neglect doesn’t create a welcoming atmosphere. It’s a shame because the place has potential, but these issues kept the overall experience from being enjoyable.

Simple, not big bus station
Rimvydas S — Google review
Bus station is small. Even there is screen with arrivals/departures information, buses goes nit according the time line. Also then you buy tickets and on that ticket are mentioned bus number - it does not mean you will go with that bus. The worker usually checks your ticket before getting in bus and let you know which one is your true business.
Birute F — Google review
The cashier that was working in the evening on September 12th didn’t want to help. When we wanted to confirm how long the bus will take to the airport, she said some random time that was twice longer than the time on the website. When we pointed this out, she just said she could sell us any ticket we wanted. We didn’t understand what that was supposed to mean, and in the end we never got a clear answer on how long the bus would actually take, she only misled us even more.

The Horn of Amalthea is a modernized mythical statue located near Kitroplateia Beach in Agios Nikolaos, Crete. This impressive structure depicts the horn of Amalthea, the goat from Greek mythology who fed honey and milk to the young god Zeus. The setting offers stunning views of the mountains of Eastern Crete rising across Mirabello Bay. While not a spectacular sight during the day, it becomes more enchanting at dusk or night when illuminated.
Nice seaside walk side takes you there. Beautiful surroundings.

Interesting sculpture of the goat horn that was used to give milk to Zeus (according with the legend) View of the sea and place is also very nice
Isabel C — Google review
Why so many glowing reviews? The monument itself is not ugly (although it is a bit unkempt), but it is nothing spectacular. Yes, it is located in the promenade area, between Kitroplatia beach and the city's tourist port, and the view is very beautiful (especially at sunrise and moonrise). But you can't give 5 stars to a mediocre monument just because, standing next to it, you can enjoy a beautiful view.
Catalin H — Google review
Another amazing statue by the sea, depicting a modernised mythical item. This is the horn of Amaltheia. When Zeus was born and had to be hidden from his father, Kronos, in the cave of Diktaion Adron (also located in Crete), Amaltheia was the goat that fed him with honey and her milk. Strong as he was, baby Zeus accidentally broke off her horn while playing and, since then, that horn provided an endless supply of food, just like Amaltheia provided for the young god. Since then, the horn of Amaltheia (also known as Cornucopia) is a symbol of wealth, abundance and nourishment.

The expertly driven vessel features an audio guide providing insights about the underwater landscape and its inhabitants. On deck, passengers can take in scenic views of Mirabello Bay and receive information about the surroundings.
Very nice boat trip especially with kids. The first part of the trip was nice but for me personally (snorkeling a lot), the ride along the shore was even better. Considering the fair pricing, the trip is a very good activity for the whole family.
Dennis M — Google review
This could have been better as we couldn’t really hear the tour recording because the sub was quite loud. When you sit in the bottom part under the water. We weren’t luck enough to see any turtles or dolphins but did see a lot of fish. Second half of the tour you sit on deck or on the top and enjoy the views. There are toilets onboard and also a vending machine with drinks and snacks
Annette T — Google review
Having read lots of mixed reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect but my children (8 and 6) were keen to go. I was pleasantly surprised! The clarity was better than I expected and we saw plenty of fish. One side definitely has a better view than the other so just be prepared to twist around a lot of you're on the wrong side, but not a huge issue. Lovely little trip on the top deck for the second half with views of the bay. Only thing I would have liked them to improve is the volume of the commentary. The few words I caught had some interesting facts but couldn't hear most of it as the boat and other guests were noisy and the commentary was just way too quiet. Overall, it was a fun way to spend an hour and a half, and good mix of views. Would definitely recommend with children.

It was a nice ride and the underwater world is very nice to watch - but as others already mentioned, sitting on the inner sides is a rather poor experience. The second half was a trip along the coast to watch the hotels - actually, we did not understand why the hotels mattered that much. But overall, a nice trip, especially with kids.
Bernd P — Google review
An absolute highlight of our trip! The ship was almost empty, and we had a lot of space to move around and witness the fascinating underwater world of Agios Nikolaos. The narration was very helpful to help us figure out what we were looking at. Fantastic value for the relatively cheap entrance fee!
Riccarda L — Google review
Pretty basic service overall, but suitable and fun for kids. Tickets cost €16.50 per person and can be purchased online, which is convenient. A simple activity if you’re looking for something light and family-friendly.
Alexandru C — Google review
If I had read all the reviews I wouldn’t have went. Anyone sitting in the seats facing inwards (i.e. looking at the people on the other side) won’t see much at all. The people in the outward facing seats had a great view as the crew throw bait to bring fish to the windows. 50% of people on the boat will see lots of fish.
Finola C — Google review
We went in expecting to be disappointed based on these reviews, but it was great experience. We were sitting at the outside seats but had to look over our shoulders just as much as people sitting on the inside side as the boat is often above the fish. It seemed to me like they fed the fish strategically so they are all around the ship and it was usually positioned so that the people on the inside had a good view as well. The ship also rotated enough so everyone could see all, the fish already seem to be used to the feeding and love to follow the ship around, both around and under. The underwater tanks have good air and AC is used to keep it cool. It doesn't seem to be overcrowded and everyone had enough room. The trip was under 2 hours and well worth the price (couldnt find anything cheaper, only maybe boat directly to spinalonga for 2 eur less and thats only a transport). It is true there are like 4-5 types of fish seen but I managed to see an eel as well, don't expect to see any octopuses or something more exotic, the fish are only one part of the view, there is also the rocky sea bottom that is very visible in the crystal clear water.

Small, tranquil town beach with a mix of sand & pebbles & a casual seaside cafe.
Calm, nice and clean beach. Sun-beds and umbrellas cost 10 euro per 2. Also it is a nice cafe close to beach. Great views for snorkeling
Olha — Google review
Gorgeous pebble beach. Sunbeds are managed by the people who own Meltemi and it’s €12 for the day, and they take card payments.
Eva S — Google review
Best beach in Agios Nikolaos. Nice and small pebble beach with clean and calm water. Umbrella and sunbeds rentals is available. There is a café on the rocks that’s popular with young people. You can enjoy a drink and order some food.
Nada S — Google review
A very beautiful beach, surrounded by controversy This beach seems to have been at the center of a local scandal — apparently, it has recently undergone some interventions by some investors, as a result of which it has lost much of its original charm. The good points: The beach is located right on the edge of the city, with plenty of bars and taverns nearby. The water is crystal clear — excellent for snorkeling enthusiasts. A stone waves breaker forms a small artificial cove with calm and very deep water — perfect for diving. Right next to the rocks, there’s a tiny platform for water-jumping; however, it’s best to swim around first to get familiar with the water, as there are many submerged rocks. On the right side of the rocks, there’s a little free beach that doesn’t appear on maps. The area is full of underwater rocks, ideal for snorkeling. Access is through the terrace of To Votsalo restaurant, then along a path winding through the stones. There’s a shallow-water tunnel connecting the free beach and the main one, so you can easily move between them. The downsides: There’s no sand, only gravel. Moreover, for reasons unclear to me, the people who landscaped the beach built a sort of ridge right at the water’s edge. The water becomes deep quite quickly (possibly due to seabed dredging). In the main beach area, there’s quite a bit of garbage on the seabed (probably left by tourists).

Beach Almyros is a spacious and lengthy beach that offers something for everyone, especially during the bustling summer months. It boasts stunning views of Mirabello Bay, with its mesmerizing blend of green and blue hues. The fine golden sand and tranquil atmosphere make it an ideal destination for relaxation. While slightly removed from the city center, it provides a more serene environment with limited amenities available. Families will appreciate the shallow waters, perfect for children to safely enjoy swimming.
Very nice and broad sand beach. We visited end of June when it was very quiet and easy parking, even when arriving around noon. There is a little trailer selling cold beverages and even pita/burgers. We paid 10 euros for sunbeds and umbrella. We paid with card as well.
David S — Google review
The beach is a lovely, family-friendly spot with shallow, calm waters and soft sand – perfect for swimming and relaxing. We came here late in the afternoon and really enjoyed the peaceful, laid-back atmosphere.
Monika T — Google review
The 4 stars are for the whole area, not just for the beach itself (read the entire review and you’ll understand why). The good points: 1. The beach is close to the city. 2. The walk along the promenade is very pleasant (but only during the day - I'll come back to this topic when I'll talk about the negative points of the beach.). 3. The water is crystal clear. 4. The beach is quite diverse: there are both areas with sun loungers and free zones where you can spread your towel directly on the ground. One such area is at the end of the promenade, where there’s also a small, very picturesque grotto. Right next to it is a mini-cove with shallow, warm water. 5. On the main sandy beach, the water remains shallow for a long distance from the shore, ideal for families with children. 6. In the free area (along the pedestrian zone), the shore is rocky, which makes it great for snorkeling. 7. You can also practice water sports (although the offer is not very diverse). 8. If you want to test your swimming skills, you can try to reach the small islet (actually just a rock rising from the sea) where the Greek flag is hoisted. 9. The underwater fauna is quite varied, I've even seen some giant sea urchins. The negative points: 1. The staff renting out the sun loungers is rude. Only one star for them. 2. I’ve mentioned the pedestrian area along the seashore a few times. To get there on foot from the city, go down Anapafseos Street until you’ll see a small paved road closed to car traffic. During the day, the walk is very pleasant, but in the evening I noticed some suspicious young people hanging around the area. It’s best to avoid it after dark, especially since, for several hundred meters, you have only the seashore on one side and a vacant lot on the other. Other observations: 1. Dogs are not allowed on the organized beach, but you can take them to the free area. 2. If you decide to swim near the pedestrian area, be careful on windy days, because the waves are rather strong and might push you against the rocks (the great danger being due to those rocks who are very close to the water surface).
Catalin H — Google review
We visited in late July. It was hot and also busy. 2 sun beds and umbrellas was €40 which I thought was a bit steep. However it is a lovely beach and the water is cool as there is stream running into the sea, that I understand comes from the mountains and it is COLD. Had a lovely dip in it, where you get into the river from a small bridge. Definitely worth a day/visit.
David M — Google review
Beautiful sandy beach that’s perfect for small children. The water is pretty shallow and the waves are small. We went with our almost 2 year old and he had a great time playing in the waves! The water was beautiful and clear and quite warm as it was the end of August. Just a really lovely beach. Parking is along the road but there is plenty of space and it’s free! The snack bar had a wide variety and the food we got was tasty. The sign said €4 for a sunbed and €2 for an umbrella… but the lady charged us €20 total for two beds and an umbrella, saying we were on the “private” part of the beach with nicer umbrellas. I was pretty sure she was scamming us but she threw in two ice waters and I didn’t really care enough to move.
Ashley W — Google review
Nice sandy beach. One food kiosk with good food at a reasonable price. Umbrellas and sunbeds at 10€ per day on the right, 20€ on the left side
Francesca F — Google review
One of the most beautiful beaches I have seen in my life. Really relaxed. 10e for 2 chairs and a beach umbrella.
Triet L — Google review
Awesome sand and clean water also shallow so good for kids. On one end of the beach there is a cold river where you which makes for a nice experience. On the other end you can walk(5 minutes) to a couple for really nice tavernas.

The Ναός Παναγίας Κεράς, also known as the Church of Panagia Kera, is a medieval-era Byzantine church located southeast of the small town of Kritsa in Crete. It is renowned for its well-preserved frescoes depicting various biblical events.
An important Byzantine church brimming with beautiful frescoes. It is a short visit, but holds wonderful images. It can get very busy, when bus loads of visitors arrive, but usually it has a serene atmosphere.
Nikos P — Google review
Beautiful little 12th century church on way to village town of Kritsa. It’s amazing all these frescoes are so well preserved. Truly breathtaking. 5 Euros each. If you love art and history worth the short visit. Some tourist shops and snacks next door too.
Courtney S — Google review
Highly recommended place! The church is really interesting and an important testimony of medieval frescoes. Also if you come here you must pay a visit to Dimitri’s cafè and shop, a really nice person and the tea, greek coffee and yogurt are super good! Also really fair prices for Creete.
Teresa P — Google review
Beautiful church with incredible frescos dating many centuries ago. The site is well preserved and it is small enough to not spend too long inside. You can take photos without flash but there is a significant entry fee despite all that...
João D — Google review
5€ for 5 minutes visiting... Not worth it. Nothing to see, waste of money.
Danieli T — Google review
We almost drove right past it. Tucked just off the road before you get into Kritsa village, the Church of Panagia Kera looks pretty unassuming from the outside. Surrounded by olive trees, it’s a simple stone building—nothing like the grand cathedrals you might imagine. But that's exactly what makes the interior so breathtaking. When we stepped inside, the air immediately felt cooler and quieter. It was like walking into another century. My eyes needed a moment to adjust, but as they did, the most incredible wall-to-wall frescoes came into focus. These weren't just a few faded paintings; the entire space was covered in biblical scenes, from the walls to the dome above. The colors are still so vivid, it’s hard to believe they were painted 600 or 700 years ago. One of the most powerful parts was standing almost eye-to-eye with the saints on the lower walls—their expressions are so expressive, it’s a very intimate experience. The church itself is small, so you can take it all in at a leisurely pace. We were there in the afternoon, and the light streaming in just made the colors glow. It wasn't overly crowded, which made the atmosphere feel even more serene and special. One tip: Don’t expect any plaques or captions inside explaining the frescoes. To get the most out of your visit, it’s worth buying one of the small guidebooks from the shop near the parking lot. It really helps you understand the rich iconography and history behind the art. The entry fee was just a few euros, and it was absolutely worth it for the chance to see some of the best-preserved Byzantine frescoes on the entire island. After our visit, we walked up the hill to Kritsa village for a coffee at one of the lovely little cafes there. It made for a perfect, history-filled half-day trip. If you're in Crete, especially near Agios Nikolaos, make the detour to see this little treasure. You won't regret it.

If you're on the hunt for an authentic dining experience, look no further than "Παραδοσιακό" (To Paradosiako Taverna). Nestled at the edge of a charming village, this hidden gem offers a delightful array of traditional dishes that are both generous in portion and rich in flavor. Diners rave about their seafood spaghetti and creamy carbonara, while families appreciate kid-friendly options like crispy chicken and homemade fries.
Lovely dinner with home felt food. I forgot to take a photo of moussaka because it was unforgettably good.. very happy we went to this place..

Ended up being a favourite place during a week in Agios Nikolaos - went back on three separate evenings, which says all you need to know! So much nicer than the louder, more touristy places in the town centre, and really nice, down-to-earth staff. But the food - wow. The souvlaki skewers are amazing, and their Kolokythakia dish one of the best. It's not dear at all, either - one of the best value restaurants in town. Absolutely recommend this place for a quieter spot and quality Cretan food.
Richard W — Google review
This restaurant is definitely worth a visit. Excellent food, pleasant atmosphere and very nice and helpful service. We had everything from appetizers to fish to lamb. Everything was always very good and at nice prices. The beautiful sea view is just the icing on the cake.

Very very cozy and nice restaurant. I think one if the best in Agios (I was there 4 times, so have discovered a lot of place). The place where local people are hanging out. The host was so friendly, suggested us a best dishes, not lying what is frozen, and what is fresh. and the waiters are nice too. Highly recommended this place. And you definitely have to try octopus and sardines ❤️
Olha — Google review
Nice place directly in the harbor. It’s located directly at a Main Street. In the evening it was still quiet. You tick your food on the menu. There is a huge choice. Service was friendly and fast. We had two salads and some meze stuff and two Souvlaki. Portions are big enough! Price was also good!
Andreas K — Google review
Ate here because of the positive reviews. There were no specials on Sunday night which was disappointing. We managed to get a window seat overlooking the sea. Service was good with the main man very charming. The two complimentary mezes were good. We ordered starters first as we prefer two courses rather than everything coming close together. Like all the Cretan restaurants we have eaten in, we noticed this was the case here. The fried zucchini with cheese was delicious as were the anchovies, we ordered a Greek salad to accompany both courses. Both were large portions so we stuck starters rather than main courses. Sausage was not available (first choice) so went for meatballs in tomato sauce and two pork souvlaki. Again all delicious. Free chocolate cake with ice cream was a lovely finish to a good meal. With a litre of house red the bill came to 39.40 euros. Cards are accepted.

We stayed for a dinner under the moonrise. We took as appetizer the spicy cheese salad, one of the few places where you can find this in Crete. Fish of the day was 15e, dorada, very good and big portion. Also, spaghetti with chicken were very good. Seating was near the street, both indoor and outdoor. They also take reservations. Service was good and staff was friendly and nice.

Probably the best seaside complex in Agios Nikolaos. Would give 10 stars if I could. We went for three evenings in a row for food, drinks and a swim because this place is a WINNER. Never too crowded or busy and the atmosphere is amazing. The beach is beautiful with clear water and smooth white sand and the views to the mountains are stunning, of course. Food is delicious and reasonably priced and the speciality drinks are also really yummy. However, the absolute best things were the top tier service and the awesome staff. We were welcomed as friends and warmly wished farewell as we left for the last time (for now). I highly recommend Kimzu for the experience and will definitely come back next time we visit Agios Nikolaos.

Absolutely superb place! We were staying at an all inclusive a short walk away and ended up eating and drinking here every day. Their cocktails are AMAZING, the food is fantastic - particularly the club sandwich - and the staff are lovely, especially the guy with glasses and a beard, he is great fun. We hired sun loungers on one day, they are very comfortable and the price is reasonable. The view over crystal clear blue sea here is beautiful. I wish they would build a little hotel on the property 😅

The best place to hang out in Agios! We found this place 5 mins from our hotel and just kept coming back as it was so amazing! Comfy beds at a reasonable hire price, helpful and friendly staff, very nice food and drinks, and just the best view. Visited with our 2 year old who loved it too. Can't wait to come back in the future, bonus points for all the funky signs - especially the Star Wars ones!

We first stopped in for a drink, was offered water upon arrival. The young girl that served us was very friendly. The food looked nice, so we decided to go back. Had The Club sandwich & Smashed Burger, both lovely and very good value.

Absolutely stunning location! Unfortunately, I had to lower my rating due to a small but important issue. I specifically asked if they could make a Freddo cappuccino with lactose-free milk and was told yes — but it was served with regular milk. As someone who reacts to dairy, this affected me for the rest of the day. A simple heads-up that lactose-free milk wasn’t available would have solved the problem — I would’ve just chosen something else. Still, a lovely spot overall.
