Quetzaltenango in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Quetzaltenango, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Quetzaltenango, often called Xela, is a highland city known for its colonial architecture, cool mountain climate and views of surrounding volcanoes. It’s a hub for Spanish-language schools, attracting visitors who want immersive study combined with Guatemalan culture. Nearby hot springs like Fuentes Georginas and hiking routes to Santa María and Santiaguito volcanoes make it a strong base for outdoor activities. The city’s markets, churches and Mayan communities in the surrounding villages offer insight into indigenous traditions and everyday life in western Guatemala.
With favorites like Centro Comercial Interplaza Xela, Parque Municipal Cerro El Baúl, and Xela Green, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like El Balcón de Enríquez and Bistro Positano so you can get the best taste of Quetzaltenango while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Parque Centro América

Park
Parque Centro America, located in the heart of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, is a large square surrounded by neoclassical buildings and historical landmarks. The park is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists alike, offering a glimpse into the city's vibrant culture and history. Visitors can admire the Iglesia del Espiritu Santo's stunning front, which still stands despite being damaged by earthquakes.
When B and I got to Xela, we were exhausted after a long day of travel, but we wanted to explore. "¡Van a la Parque a Centroamérica!" our house mother, Rosario recommended. We had 75% battery in our phones, more than enough to find the park. We set of on the narrow cobblestone roads and in 5 minutes we were there. The park is a two block by one block oasis and was full of activity on the Sunday that we visited. There were older women in woven skirts that we learned had different patterns related to different locations in the country. Kids ran around. People greeted strangers with a warm, "Buenos Tardes" and friends with a hug. There is a round stone structure in the center next to giant letters spelling out XELA. A puppeteer put his Michael Jackson puppet through the Billy Jean dance routine, complete with crotch grabs and moonwalking. Around the edges of the park there are carts offering various fruits, toys and trinkets. We found a girl selling mangos and asked for one that would be ripe tomorrow. She felt a couple, then pulled out the perfect ripe tomorrow mango. She asked if we wanted it prepared. We agreed, wondering what we were getting into. She put the mango on a stick and expertly pealed it. Next she cut slices into it that made it open up like a flower. She offered all sorts of toppings, but we wanted the pure thing. She put the mango into a small bag and we were off to find the marimba we heard in the distance. It turned out to be a recording of a marimba. We listened for a while and explored the market street next to the park. For such a small place there was plenty of things to explore. We returned there many times over the week.

This is an awesome spot! You'll find lots of people enjoying themselves and having a great time. The park is full of beautiful flora, notably many new American Sweetgum installations. What's really cool is how some of these sweetgums have been meticulously manicured, creating a bonsai-like effect that makes them look like perfect little green cakes or even vibrant green gelatin cups. Plus, keep an eye out for the lone Douglas Fir tree!
Lucas K — Google review
A real nice park area, safe ,lots of street vendors and restaurants, excellent pizzas

Love this place ❤️. It's easier to walk around then to drive. Extremely congested with cars. LOVE the food! I especially enjoyed the strawberry flavor or cherry ice cream in the Sarita ice cream parlor. 😍yum!

When I first arrived in Xela my colleagues & I had a tour of Central Park! This a happening place on the weekends super crowded & on Sundays markets are set up to buy many & various items! Funtime! You never know what will happen! Marching band or a youth group celebration !

Xelapan is a popular bakery and cafe chain in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, known for its traditional Guatemalan breakfast offerings. The breakfast includes eggs, beans, tortillas, bread, sauces, cream, fried plantains, tea or coffee, juice and atol. They also offer xeca bread which pairs well with coffee or chocolate. Locals highly recommend Xelapan as a go-to spot for delicious freshly baked breads and pastries at affordable prices.
The place is ample, people is really kind and quick to serve, food portions are good and delicious. Bakery is great, try the Shecas. Great experience.
Jaime B — Google review
I enjoyed the pastry, but I think the pastry here mostly bland and do not have so much flavor! We also ordered traditional tea and they gave us the melted chocolate and once we told them they did not change it! I did not like the melted chocolate at all!
Mojtaba Z — Google review
Location and variety are honestly the only good things about this place. Cafeteria staff are rude, answering simple questions to people who don't quite understand all local words with the most awful face, no WiFi provided, and the coffee tastes like dirty water. Expensive and tiny plate options, credit card machines that often have NFC problems keeping you waiting forever..
Cê O — Google review
Love this place! The bread, the food, the drinks, the service, the ambiance... it's not to be missed. I visited two different locations in Xela and they were equally fantastic. It's my go-to bakery to pick up breakfast for the next day and to enjoy an afternoon coffee, chocolate, or shake.
Deborah L — Google review
It is important to know this bakery. They have loads of German style bread and cake, although they are not a German bakery. Everything is delicious. They also have a nice café.

What a delightful bakery! As american, it was so fun enjoying all these baked goods--especially the strawberry and creme pastry. Fresh cream!!! They were absolutely delicious. The coffee was okay, but nothing to write home about.

Architectural Buildings
Nestled in the heart of Quetzaltenango, the Municipal Theatre, or Teatro Municipal, stands as a beacon of culture and history. This architectural gem features an impressive neoclassical facade that draws visitors in with its elegance. Inside, you'll find well-preserved interiors that enhance the overall experience. The theatre is not just about aesthetics; it serves as a vibrant hub for arts and entertainment, hosting a variety of shows ranging from professional performances to community events—many of which are free!
A lovely theater! We went for the architecture and stayed to watch a play. We couldn't find information about the shows online but they seemed to have things going on most evenings and you could just pop in and check. They seem to have great programming, and often free for the community. A really valuable arts institution. Glad we went!
Michael G — Google review
Very cool architecture and building. One of the must-see places in the city. Similar in elegance to center park although just a little lower key. Plan a phenomenal night out with attending a show and enjoying the scene. Can make it a romantic night or a fun family night, or just drive around to stop and enjoy the scenery. Have a couple places to sit outside by the statue

An amazing architectural landmark, great place for concerts and plays
Jonnathan D — Google review
It is a nice building, both the insight (wood) and the outside (bit fake though). Most shows and concerts are for free (check the website or instagram) and in a wide variety from professional piano playing to amateur dance. Sometimes you need to get your tickets upfront. The furniture could be better and the lodges are a bit messy.

Shopping mall
Utz Ulew Mall is a typical shopping center that can be quite expensive, as one would expect from being ranked among the top 3 malls in Xela. The food court could use some improvement, as it tends to get overcrowded during weekends. However, overall it offers a pleasant experience with well-maintained facilities, including clean and attractive bathrooms. Dollar City stands out with its wide range of products and deserves four stars for that alone.
I like this place very well located in the center of the city and with a lot of stores also if you want to eat something you can go to the different options you can find in the food Court.
Rolando M — Google review
Nice mall, has many shops! Cinema, gym, kids playground and food curt.
Hussain A — Google review
4 stars for Dollar City, lots of goodies to buy there, the rest of the mall is nothing too exciting but it's pretty new and kept clean. Sadly the sushi place has gone from the food hall, it was a bit expensive but nice.
Mike B — Google review
parking is Q5 more than before, I wasn't there for more than 4 hrs and had to pay Q15, they should do better bc paying that compared to other malls is expensive af, makes me not want to go there anymore:/
Melanny L — Google review
It's a regular mall, pricey, what you would expect for one of the top 3 malls in Xela, food court is kind of ugly, not enough room for all the people who goes there on weekends, other than that it's nice, nice bathrooms too.
Ob Z — Google review
They are charging the parking. Q. 10 after the first 15 minutes. Not a lot of open stores. It was well after 12 in the afternoon when I went. Not thinking of going back. Pradera Xela isn't charging for parking and much more stores.
Vasny M — Google review
Don’t go. Security will think you’re suspicious if you get cold and want to put your hoodie on.
Efren O — Google review
Open the mall before the construction was finished was one of the worst ideas I've ever seen, no elevators, no wheelchair entrance nor exit, dust, no space for parking and those are just some of the problems that this mall has right now, so far the worst first impression.

National park
Parque Municipal Cerro El Baúl is a protected forested area near Xela, featuring the dormant volcano Cerro El Baúl and several hiking trails. The park offers stunning views of the city and the Western Highlands. Visitors can enjoy a morning hike to the top from the bottom church, which takes about 30 minutes. However, it's important to be cautious with directions as some paths may lead through private properties with aggressive dogs.
Great view from above! If you want to take a walk, breath clean air! Walk your dog, wonderful experience! Highly recommended!
Dennis S — Google review
I was so surprised at how good this place was for birding so close to the city. We saw many warblers along the road, including the endemic pink-headed warbler!! We also saw a Motmot and a mountain trogon. Definitely worth a visit!
Libby N — Google review
Awesome morning hike. Be sure to take the hiking trail to the top from the bottom church. Seemed very safe. From the bottom it takes about 30 minutes to hike. Be careful taking google directions. It can lead up through some private property's with very mean protective dogs.

Nicole R — Google review
Lovely place to share time with the nature and family, friendly locals selling food, easy hike no more that 25mins, dont forget to take the shortcut otherwise you will walk 2 hrs.
Alejandro R — Google review
This was a great hike in Xela that provided an amazing view of the city below! Although the walking trails were a bit hard to find, the view from the top was worth it! Be sure to bring a jacket as it can get chilly!
Krishna N — Google review
This place is good to go, a lot of green, however be safe... It can be a targeted place, but if you are in a big group, you will get along and have fun :)

El Balcón de Enríquez is a unique restaurant offering a bird's eye view of Parque Central, making it an ideal spot for people-watching during holidays and special events. Located in the Pasaje Enriquez building on Parque Centro America, this second-floor outdoor balcony provides stunning views of Quetzaltenango city center and the surrounding areas. While the wait time may be long, the delicious food and filling appetizers make it worthwhile.
Great views, the food is good but only at 4 out of 5 stars, nothing to complain about, just not extraordinary. Maybe a 4.4 stars.
Lucas K — Google review
Very nice views, but very expensive coffee and grumpy service. I would recommend going here once only for the view, but expect to pay 1.5x what you're used to for drinks. They have 3 kinds of pizza, all with meat, and the Hawaiian one we got tasted super boring. Pizza prices are on par with the rest of xela. The hot chocolate and latte were also not the quality I would expect for the price.
Emma P — Google review
Way more expensive than other places, rude staff. Says we can pay via card but you cannot. Just don't bother going here
Max B — Google review
I visited this place after a long day of adventures in the nearby mountains and towns. The wait time was a little long, but very well worth the tasty food that was served. The appetizers and beverages that filled me up during the wait time were very filling and pleasing to the taste buds. The views of the Quetzaltenango city center and the surrounding areas were awesome. The prices are a bit on the high side, but nothing completely unaffordable. I STRONGLY recommend this place to anybody in the Quetzaltenango area looking to quench their thirst and kill their hunger, either individually or as a group.
Satya [ — Google review
Nice view but that's it. Unfriendly and shady service, charged us 20% more and didnt give us a receipt. Had to pay cash because their machine wasn't working...
M B — Google review
This place has no idea how to make cocktails. They taste like sugar syrup with no alcohol. Even the view doesn't make up for the poor drink quality. Please don't even bother coming here! I ordered a 'margarita' which I couldn't finish!
Nicki N — Google review
In short, overpriced menu with a fantastic view. You’re really paying for the view, not the quality of food and drinks. Customer service was horrible, micheladas had nothing special other than the high price.
Noel R — Google review
The food is more than terrible, the service even worst. The only good thing is the view outside (inside is old/dated/bad taste.

Pizza restaurant
Bistro Positano is a cozy Italian restaurant in Xela, Guatemala, known for its delicious and affordable pizza and pasta. The restaurant prides itself on using fresh ingredients to deliver classic Italian flavors, making it a popular choice among locals and visitors alike. While some dishes offer unique twists, sticking to the traditional options is highly recommended. The restaurant's charming decor adds to the dining experience, although some guests have noted that improvements could be made in terms of cleanliness and ambiance.
Best Italian food I've had in a very long time!
Jose G — Google review
Honestly, I would love to give this place a better rating ~ it's super cozy, has nice decoration and the service is fantastic. But I didn't like it at all. As a vegan, the options are limited to salad, bread drowned in olive oil, garlic and mushrooms, and beverages. I ordered a pasta al pomodoro -- pasta with tomato sauce, and had asked for extra spinach and mushrooms and made sure there were no animal products in it, which they affirmed twice. When it arrived it tasted funny. Upon asking again the waiter asked the chef and it turns out the pasta has egg in it. It tasted really awful, even my non vegan friends tried it and said it wasn't good. I was very disappointed and upset and lost my appetite. Now my stomach hurts and I regret walking in there so bad.
Sienna M — Google review
Nice decor, good service but the Lasagna Bolognese I had was rather sad. Lots of pasta layers with a salty thin sauce. Hardly any meat. Overpriced.
Andrew S — Google review
Cozy place to eat Italian food, beauty decorated and awesome building. The bathroom wasn't so clean and I didn't get paper towels to dry my hands, not much water also. I wish i could hear Italian music to get the whole Italian experience and not the kind of music you can find in x places.
Byron G — Google review
Mediocre at best. My lasagna was served cold - clearly not enough time in the microwave. Even once heated to a proper temperature, it didn't taste great. Very overpriced for what it was. Sadly I would not eat here again.
Mary S — Google review
I usually don't mind paying more for good Italian food but this place is really overpriced for such mediocre food. The reviews here are misleading. I ordered the lasagna and it tasted (and looked) as if had been frozen and microwaved. We ordered a bottle of wine but the waiter was not familiar with proper wine service.
Christina M — Google review
Delicious home made pasta and gnocchi. My wife is Italian and she confirmed it was great (and she’s hard to please when it comes to Italian food!)

We had to wait 50 minutes for food. Prices are not expensive. Food (pesto lasagna and fruit of the sea pasta) was rather insipid. There was a weird smell in the area we were in.

Restaurant
After sampling steaks across North America, I thought I knew everything about steak. However, Tony's Steakhouse proved me wrong with their truly enchanting flavor explosion. The taste is incredibly rich and juicy, and the restaurant itself has a down-to-earth ambiance with excellent service. Tony's magic touch on their steaks made me dream about their succulent flavors after my first meal there. I couldn't resist going back for lunch, dinner, and even a fourth visit on the third day.
Loved the place. The service was friendly and nice. The quality of meat was good. Would love to visit again.
J — Google review
The restaurant was somewhat busy. The service was chaotic and slow. The food came relatively quick, but they forgot the soup and salad that comes with the loin. I asked for a cheesecake in change, but they only offered coffee as a courtesy. The loin was delicious. It took forever to pay the bill.

After eating steaks all over North America, I thought I knew steak. I was wrong. I don't know what Tony's does to their steaks, but it is a truly magical flavour explosion. Incredibly rich in flavour and juicy. The environment, plating, and service is all very down to earth. Your experience is focused around the steak. I went to bed after having my first meal at Tony's, and I ended up dreaming about the succulent tasty steak. I had to go back the next day for lunch... And then I went back for dinner. And then I went back a fourth time on the third day. I'm going to have to go back at least one more time before I leave Xela!
Brian W — Google review
My first restaurant meal in Guatemala and it was really amazing. The steak came with a salad starter, a cup of soup (!), two giant fried potato slices, some tortillas, a corn on the cob, two slices of buttery toasted bread (which when dipped in the soup was just divine) and a selection of amazing sauces. The service was great too, as was the soundtrack of Sinatra and so on. Not supercheap for this part of the world but still a good 40% cheaper than what I'd have paid in Amsterdam.
Karl W — Google review
The food was okay. It isn't amazing but all right. Would I come here again for the food? No. I give it 1 star because the got our order confused and instead of fixing it right away they came to like 'expain' they didn't get it wrong. I didn't want to argue so I said to leave it alone. We ordered dessert and they got that wrong too. That time they did fix it because I told them to. But I am not coming back here again.
Maylin V — Google review
You get a feast for your money, salad, chips and salsa, steak for 2 which was actually 3 steaks, 2 baked potatoes, corn on the cob, and drinks and desert and it was $42 USD with tip... For 2! And it was really good. Super busy though.

The Centro Comercial Interplaza Xela is a contemporary and stylish shopping center with a wide array of stores. One notable advantage is the absence of parking fees at present. When I visited on a Saturday afternoon, I was impressed by the presence of well-established stands such as Kishe, offering fantastic regional coffee options. The mall itself exudes modernity and cleanliness, providing an elevated dining experience alongside a cinema. Additionally, there were charming Mayan girls adding to the lively atmosphere.

Honesty, this is a real nice shopping mall. Staff overall is kind and friendly, the mall itself very clean, the restrooms very clean too. I really appreciate that (except of the food area), dogs are welcome do walk in. There even fountains where the dogs can drink. Also there are some sitting areas. And public wifi. Zoo
Zoológico Minerva, a prominent green space in the heart of the bustling city, stands out for its diverse collection of animals. This includes a lion, tiger, various primates, and smaller mammals. The zoo also boasts an impressive array of bird species such as parrots, owls, parakeets, and even a toucan. Alongside its animal exhibits is a small section dedicated to kiddy rides for young children.
A nice place to go with family, they have a small section with kiddy rides for small children. You can take your own food and have a picnic in the park, thought that was neat to do.
Alejandra — Google review
Most of the animals are in enclosures that are too small for them. Many of them are over fed, with their bowls having enough food to feed them for a couple of days.
C H — Google review
This is a zoo that should disappear. All of these animals are in the poorest conditions. Its lavatories are quite sad, and the children's area is insecure.

Catedral del Espíritu Santo

4.8
(701)
Cathedral
Church
Catedral del Espíritu Santo is a stunning church located in the heart of Quetzaltenango. It features an ornate facade that remains from the original 16th-century baroque church, as well as a larger, more modern cathedral behind it. The neo-gothic design, intricate stonework, and beautiful stained glass windows make it one of the city's most prominent landmarks.
Awesome Church, especially now that the domes have been repaired, one is able to see the entire main altar. Even with the new repairs, the original decor is noticeable and appreciated. Beautiful masses are held daily and the other altars are also beautiful ❤️🙏🏼 This is a must see, when you visit Quetzaltenango. If you attend mass on Sunday or a holiday, be sure to arrive early so you can get a seat.

Had a really wonderful breakfast there: The waffle with omelette and potatoes was super delicious and the portion more than generous! Loved the beacon, mushrooms, spinach and cheese in the omelette - which by itself was on of the best prepared omelette that I ever had!

Have eaten here several times. Usually something stands out as good in flavor but keep missing on overall experience. Server knew overeasy eggs but other delivered extremely overcooked sunnyside up. NO youk whatsoever. Coffee is also inconsistent. Again coffee amounted to hot water. Ha and it was served french press. Again has potential but keeps missing. Slow service which is okaybfor me if good coffee and service. She asked about nothing except if okay to take my plate.

Breakfast restaurant
Pollo Campero is a popular Guatemalan chain known for its fried and grilled chicken, as well as a variety of sides. Despite originating in Guatemala, it has expanded beyond the country's borders due to its widespread popularity. The restaurant offers reliable options for both fried and grilled chicken, along with salads and sandwiches at reasonable prices. Customers appreciate the consistent quality of food and quick service provided by Pollo Campero, making it a favorite dining spot for many.
I love it so much. I've been going here in every city. It's thy best franchise ever. BRING IT TO CANADA!

Solid fried chicken franchise - they deliver on tasty chicken! Extensive fried chicken options in the menu. Long wait to get a seat, our group was large, so we sat between 3 tables. Presents as a fast food place, but for dine-in it is the speed of a normal sit-down restaurant (I'm sure pick up at the front counter is faster, like normal fast-food). Better than KFC!
M P — Google review
Slow service, no smiles but at least the food is good and this is not Popeyes lol
Florentino M — Google review
This restaurant used to be the best when there was not enough competition. Now, it is just disappointment after disappointment. Orders rarely have no mistakes, pieces are pricey and small (how old are your chickens when you prepare them? 6 weeks?) I give two stars for flavor and your chicken nuggets.

The service and the place are great. However, the food was not the best, the food was served almost cold (the steak was barely warm) and undercooked. Expected a better service based on the price

The food was very good, the service was not that great. After we ordered we never got our drinks, mind you it was empty, we had to remind the waiter for the drinks. My parents got coffee and never were offered refills on their coffee. This Don Carlos was not up to par to the one located in Salcaja, the service there was excellent I had up to 3 refills on my coffee the attention was excellent & this location unfortunately didn’t give the same customer service. If you want the same great food with better service don carlos in salcaja is much better.

The taste of the meat could be better. Not everyone likes the dressing of chimichurri and chimichurri does not go with everything (It would be convenient that'll waiters to consult with the diners before to include chimichurri with the sides to avoid inconveniences and unnecessary delays). The service of the staff was very slow. They could be more attentive to the tables they have assigned and speed up the taking of the order and delivery of the check. There is no specific parking area so the street is used, which besides being insufficient is also insecure. A lot of waiting time to be assigned to a table. Considering the place where the restaurant is located, the quality of the staff service, lack of parking, etc. the prices are slightly expensive.

Huge water park with an artificial river, wave pools & long curly slides, plus food & accommodation.
This palce is amazing ! I've gone to many waterparks in the US and this one is on the top of my list of favorite waterparks to go to! The entrance only coats 100q per person which is only about 13 USD. The park is full of amazing rides for all the family and the food selection is great too! The waterpark is clean safe and I 100% recommend it to anyone visiting Guatemala! The climate is always warm so no matter what time of year you visit it will be great!

Very impressive Waterpark. We went on a Friday in early June and it was not busy at all. It did not rain either. The only downside is the close the park at 5 but the rides and restaurants close all service at 4. Food was very good and reasonably priced except the pizza was rather pricey. Lazy river is hands down best lazy river I've ever been to.

Amazing waterpark! So many good amusement slides and parks great food, many snacks like nachos, icecream! Very fun rides!
Kim — Google review
I used to go here when I was a kid and it was my first time as an adult, at the beginning was a big shock because I thought they forgot to take care of the park but it was just a memory I had as a kid. The park is well maintained, has new things and it’s great for families with kids. I enjoyed being there for a couple of hours, the best part is they still have funnel cake and corn dogs :) if you have a membership entrance is free if not you will have to pay approximately Q170 adult and Q70 kids (if I’m not wrong). Recommend this place!
Jim A — Google review
Cool place, rides are good. The only issue is that there is no order when it comes to using the floating tubes. People are hoarding the tubes and not let others use it which limits the rides that you can use.

Sharon K — Google review
Rooms and facilities are decent, though a bit outdated. The staff and the owner are very friendly. It’s cheap, but be warned: the bar is loud, and if you need to sleep or wake up early, it’s not the best choice.

We stayed here for 3 nights in a private double and had a fanatic stay! The rooftop view and bar is perfect for sunrise / sunset views and also to chill during the day. It has a great kitchen and is close to the main square. Tom is so, so helpful and available for anything you need. What I was so impressed about was the warm welcome and the huge amount of usual information they provide for hiking and tours. Tom will help you arrange any guided hike or tour but also give you all the details you need if you want to do hikes and day trips alone, without paying for a guide / tour. They are so honest and it is was so refreshing to stay somewhere that generally wants you to enjoy your time and is not focused on trying to sell you extra services. We will absolutely stay at Kasa Kiwi anytime we come to Xela.
Melissa B — Google review
Stayed here before my Xela-Lake Atitlan hike. Good location for getting to the hike briefing but not happy with my private room. The curtains didn't close fully and there was a massive gap where you could see into my room from the main lobby- not okay!
Lu L — Google review
Awesome hostel, for a great price. Tom (the owner) is amazingly helpful in planning and everything else. It’s great to see an owner active in his own business. Free filtered water, shared kitchen, and large lockers outside the rooms. Bathrooms are limited, but I didn’t have to wait. There is a bar on top of the hostel, that is sometimes loud, but the music does stop around 9:45pm.
Billy C — Google review
It's definitely hard to get a good night's sleep in this hostel, both due to noise from the street and fellow hostel guests. In the private room, cleanliness was really fine. Facilities are a bit dated and only two burners worked in the kitchen which made cooking a very slow experience. As a solo female traveller I felt safe. It's pretty cheap. Overall it was okay for a night, but I would not come back.
Julia R — Google review
Tom, the owner, is a great and honest guy who gives you a lot of information and tips. He don't want to sell you tours - he even encourages you to do hikes on your own and supports to connect with others who want to do the same hike. The Deluxe room has all you need and is very spacious. The kitchen is in good condition and clean. Furthermore we liked that the nice rooftop bar is also open to locals so you can connect easily with them - much more interesting as just staying in the "traveller's bubble" like in some other hostels. Thanks for the great time!

Xela Green is a vegetarian restaurant in the center of town, offering plenty of options for vegans. The food is considered healthy but some find it slightly lacking in taste and warmth. However, the lentil soup is a standout dish. The prices are reasonable and the owner has a big heart for street dogs, even running a dog shelter called Mi Techito without any municipal support. While dining in may be inconvenient due to surrounding shops and foot traffic, the delicious food makes up for it.
Absolutely delicious! 🌱✨ I had the best experience at this vegan restaurant — every dish was bursting with flavour, beautifully presented, and made with such fresh, wholesome ingredients. I was blown away by how satisfying and creative the menu was. The staff were super friendly and the vibe was relaxed and welcoming. This is a deliciously inexpensive option for vegetarians and vegans. The menu of the day is a great deal for midday. We were there at dinnertime, so I asked the server for her recommendation. She pointed us to the tempeh or tofu sandwiches, which can have cheese or baba ghanoush inside. We went with ghanoush and were happy we did! Filtered water was available by the glass (yay! No plastic!) and also used for the juice and the vegetable prep. Yes!

If you're looking for an amazing experience when it comes to drinks, food, and ambiance, come here. The bar tender knows their drinks, the chef knows the food and the musicians know their spanish guitar. Treat. your. Self.

Such a beautiful wine bar, very intimate. There are lots of candles and nice decorations. Our server, José, was so friendly, helpful, and attentive. He helped us pick a delicious wine, and we paired it with a great cheese board. Highly recommend, we had an amazing date night :)

Restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Quetzaltenango, Tertulianos Restaurante & Museo offers a unique dining experience that combines exquisite cuisine with a touch of cultural heritage. Housed in an elegant historic building, this restaurant is not just about food; it’s also a museum that showcases local art and history. On Sundays, Tertulianos transforms into a brunch haven where guests can indulge in a lavish spread for Q140—perfect for those looking to savor every bite.
A fancy place with great service and food. The prices look high but I'm an American that doesn't know value in Quetzales, most things were in the triple digit Quetzales range. The 3 shrimp tacos are delicious but the smoked salmon was a let down. The steak with the egg and cheese on top with plantains also looked good. For larger parties, the server leaves a button for you to press to summon service which is nice. I'd certainly dine here again if I could as the menu has many items. Did I mention the service was great? Perhaps it was because we were a large party. Credit cards are accepted here and I don't think there is a service fee for using a credit card. There are bathrooms here for ladies and gentlemen. There's a nice waiting area with couches and chairs as well as something upstairs.

Delicious food and beautiful place in Quetzaltenango. One of our favorite places for breakfast or brunch. Staff is very accommodating. Highly recommend.

Beautiful, historic home near the stadium in Xela. They have a pretty lavish breakfast buffet on Sundays for 105Q. There's a nice garden and some toys for kids. Service was good. The dining rooms are beautiful and filled with treasures. Oh and the breakfast was good--not the best I've ever had, but the ambiance alone would be worth a trip.

WOW, that is the best description, hand down one of the places I have visited, the ambiance, the old flavor of this historic building, couples with the food, amazing

Supposedly one of the finest restaurants in town, we were served, unnecessarily ceremoniously, microwaved plates of the driest salmon and the most lousily warmed up fish from a freezer with gummy sauce, all of which had no flavour. We ate less than half of it and were not feeling very well for days after. Staff were nice, though. Avoid and eat somewhere else (like Flor Maya Zona 1).

This place is amazing for a romantic dinner. The atmosphere and service is top notch. We had oysters with cheese as an appetizer. It was very tasty although I think next time I would chose with garlic as I felt the cheese was a bit too overwhelming. For dinner, I ordered the A La Malagueña and it was decadent. I was so excited to eat, that I failed to get pictures of the food. The house wine was good. The portion sizes are generous. I hope to return again someday.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! The service was way above par, the food was excellent, and the ambiance was really nice and classy. We will be back and highly recommend this place. It may even be the best restaurants in Xela.
