El Arcotete

Ecological park
Sights & Landmarks
El Arcotete is a nature park located just 4km outside of town, offering a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking trails, cliff rappelling, caves to explore, campsites and zip lines. The area features La Casa de Mazariegos and the City Hall constructed in stone. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility interrupted only by the sound of a stream flowing through El Arcotete's naturally formed arch.
Had s beautiful time at the Grutas el Arcotete, I didn’t go on a tour I took a colectivo is only $15 pesos just have to ask which one goes there I like to go on my own because I take as long as I need and nog rushed like sometimes by tour guide.
Lamberto V — Google review
The caves are quite cool but overall an underwhelming experience if you are used to nature. Should you have some time to kill, it is worth a visit but don’t break your back trying to get here. The individuals working there are not friendly, greeted us with their hand out, and tried to keep my partner’s change. Entrance fees are 10 for the park and 15 for the caves. There is a 5 peso charge for bathrooms. The zip lining did not look very exciting. I saw no horses. The water is very polluted. There were a handful of rainbow salamander creatures which were quite beautiful. They did have snacks and drinks for sale as well as a restaurant on site. On departure, they wouldn’t let us take a marked taxi and wanted us to get into one of their own unmarked vehicles. I didn’t get the best vibes overall. We ended up taking a collectivo back, which you catch just up the road.
Heather S — Google review
It’s pretty cool, but not really a destination. The cave is kind of interesting so if you just wanna get outside of town and do a little nature walk, I’d say it’s OK. One tip would be to take the collective vote bus as a taxi this sort of a rip off it basically will drop you off right in front of the entrance and save you a bunch of money
Danny G — Google review
So magical, I can't believe that I almost didn't come here! Definitely take the time to also explore the fantastical gruta and to appreciate the forest canopy from above at the mirador! Just 15 pesos straight from the downtown area to the entrance of the park every 8 minutes until 6 in the evening. When I was there it was 10 to visit the arc and 15 to go into the gruta. Well worth it!
Candace C — Google review
magic place, nice walks, fresh air, local people take so nice care🙏
Romana E — Google review
The level of enjoyment you get from this place will depend on your expectations. If you are expecting a well organized, entertaining activities and lots to do, you might be disappointed. It doesn't have a lot of information, it is run by local indigenous people in a very laid back, simple way, and although there are different things to do, it is not overly entertaining in itself. The entry is $10 pesos p/person. There are grounds you can walk or bike through. Fun place to take photos. The natural arc rock is free. The Zipline is $150 per person, and it includes two ziplines. Was safe enough. To enter the grotto is $15 pesos per person. This is kind of different and fun. But crowd control is not practiced: it can get a bit cramped in some of the small places. Also hard access for overweight or really tall people. There were also option of boat rides, rappelling, camping and tightrope. But we didn't participate in those. My teenage children moatly enjoyed because of the novelty of the grotto, riding their bikes and the ziplines, and they had their drone and camera to play around taking cool photos. It would've been nice to take a picnic, or to rent a palapa and have a BBQ on the grill, but we didn't plan accordingly. Overall, it is a lovely spot for a day out in nature. It was so clean and fresh, and plenty of families were out and about enjoying the sunshine. It has a restaurant and a comedor selling snacks, but we didn't try those out either. I gave it 5 start because it is really is a nice place to visit, I loved the grotto, and the excuse to hang out with my family. But I also understand that it is not a highly modernized and efficient tourist attraction.
Vanessa A — Google review
Beautiful and unique spot. There's an entry fee of 10 pesos per person for the park and then a further 15 pesos if you want to go into the caves. Definitely worth the extra 15, atleast once. Stunning and strikes a nice balance in eco tourism. Well looked after, but still allowing us to go in and enjoy the place.
Kate D — Google review
Amazing natural place that is so close from San Christobal, just take a local bus! The caves are incredible and so much better than ever expected! Also just perfect for a lovely walk in nature or a picknick

Iglesia de San Juan Chamula

Mentioned on
11 lists
Shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Iglesia de San Juan Chamula, located just a short drive from San Cristobal de las Casas, is a must-visit destination. This unique church seamlessly blends indigenous Tzotzil Mayan traditions with Catholicism, creating an unforgettable experience. While it may appear like a typical church from the outside, stepping inside reveals its distinctiveness. Visitors can also explore the nearby village of San Juan de Chamula and immerse themselves in its cultural offerings.
Inglesia de San Juan Bautista, in the indigenous town of San Juan Chamula. A very quaint church with attractive yet simple ornamentation. Inside is very intriguing where the local natives practice a blend of Catholicism and carried over Mayan beliefs. There are no pews inside, just some kind of green dyed plant material spread over the tile floor. Plenty of statues of the saints of course and hundreds of candles burning while Indian women in particular are kneeling and praying on the floor with their chickens and offerings. Healing and other rituals go on in there too. It would be a National Geographic photographer’s dream, ha ha, but out of respect no photos can be taken. I did sneak one shot from the very back of the church.
Matthew S — Google review
Architecture not outstanding but inside very interesting as this community retain rituals, combining traditional beliefs and Catholicism which is unique . No photos allowed inside the church. No photos of people within the village boundaries(unless at distance by general inclusion) Lots of candles lit in the church, floor strewn with pine fronds, beware floaty dresses/palazzo trousers ! Visited as part of a group tour. Specialist leatherwork on display in the shops.
Musicians M — Google review
I had a super great experience overall! The atmosphere was fantastic, and everything exceeded my expectations. The staff was friendly and attentive, making the entire visit even more enjoyable. However, one downside was that videos weren’t allowed inside, which was a bit disappointing because I wanted to capture some special moments to look back on. Despite that, the memorable experience more than made up for it, and I’d definitely recommend it to others.
Wattle B — Google review
i was here as a part of a day tour from san Christobal. Good experience as it show cases a culturally different community and still not touristy. it's a living community with a different culture but so close to the city of San Cristobal. the church is open to all and the rituals are wellcome for all to see. photography is not allowed inside the church though
Ram V — Google review
Very Interesting! I have never seen anything like it! There was a large festival happening, so, markets, music and the church left such an impression, with the dark interior, smoke, incense, hay strewn everywhere, chicken sacrifices. This is definitely a must see!
J D — Google review
When people say it is an unique experience, they meant it. This is the story of a people who fought for its right to freedom of belief and stood against the Spanish, the Mexican nationalist forces, the Catholic Church and the state - and won. Don't treat their customs like it's a freak show. Everything here has a deep meaning behind.
Fernando B — Google review
Very very interesting church and community. You can go here yourself or you can get a guided tour at 9:30am from San Christobel de Las Casas, that will also take you to Zinacatan and explain the customs and their differences. The tour I took leaves from the cross in the main square at San Christobel every morning and you can just show up. Cost was 250 pesos and the guide was incredibly knowledgeable and his English very good. Many other tours have no guides or no English spoken. This was a great opportunity to learn about the Mayan culture as it still lives today.
Andreas B — Google review
Yes, it is authentic, but somehow also feels like just another charismatic town, and with not much to do there. We visited the church and then went for a healer (shaman) session. The church is interesting as combines many religiones and exhibits roots to very old beliefs. The healer thing was quite weird, as the guy could not really tell us what did he feel on us in terms of energy , or advice… he just gave the same comment to each of us, which made it feel as a bit of a scam. I’d definitely skip visiting chamula as Chiapas has plenty of other places worth spending more time on than this town.

Cathedral
Catholic church
Located in the heart of San Cristobal de las Casas, Catedral de San Cristóbal de las Casas is a stunning architectural gem that dates back to 1528. The cathedral's baroque facade and gilded altar are just some of the features that make it a must-see attraction in this cultural capital.
An imaginable experience with beautiful mixto culture. Where Spaniard vibes mets Mexicsn culture. An amazing city that most definitely fell in love with
Juanita — Google review
Historically significant cathedral that has some great artwork depicting various saints, but otherwise very plain. Outside the church are numerous venders giving the location the feel of a festival during the weekends. While there is a road up to the cathedral, I found the lengthy switchback stairs in the front a great challenge and exhilarating exercise.
Michael F — Google review
The main church on the Dan Cristobal. About 300 years old. Lots of shops and coffee places, shopping area around it. I did the walking tour from here.

Incredible piece of history. I had the bad fortune to visit this place after the devastating earthquake of 2017 and it was closed but the facade remains a powerful sight.

Iglesia de San Cristóbalito

Mentioned on
10 lists
Catholic church
Sights & Landmarks
Iglesia de San Cristóbalito is a small red-and-white church located on top of a hill, offering panoramic views of the city. To reach the church, visitors must climb around 200 tree-lined steps. The area surrounding the church is home to several famous museums, including Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya, Museo del Ambar, and Museo Mesoamericano del Jade. It's recommended to visit during the day due to safety concerns at night.
Beautiful decoration. I'm assuming this is a seasonal thing, so I would not expect to see it like this all the time.
Jorge G — Google review
Great view over San Cristóbal - for the most part. Unfortunately, trees block the way in all directions except to the front where the stairs are. Hence, it is not really worth it to go up here for the sunset. Yet, the church is a beautiful landmark which is well worth a visit - during the day. Also, for the fitness enthusiasts, the stairs are a great place to go for a work out in the mornings. You’ll love the view even more after having finished all stairs ten or fifteen times in a row… ;)
René S — Google review
Very nice hike, if you choose to go thru the Sierra instead from the city side. The place is peaceful and beautiful. Provides a complete view of San Cristobal from up there.
Gabriel B — Google review
One of the most special places in San Cris. It's generally quiet, a wonderful place for meditation, yoga, exercise, sitting with friends.
Jo J — Google review
Beautiful walk up, not a lot of view from above.
Ori A — Google review
The kids counted 280 steps. Good! We did our math for the day. Haha, joking. Trees cover most of the view but it was still beautiful, quiet and sweet. You could also just drive up but if you can do the steps then just do it.
Wannabe W — Google review
Great exercise because it is quite a climb! The view is pretty great once there. Walk around the back of the church to see the communal gardens from above.

Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán

Mentioned on

Catholic church
Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán is a historical complex in San Cristobal, featuring a church, former monastery, and regional history museum. The church's pink stone facade showcases Baroque Solomonic style with intricate carvings of saints' figures, angels, and grooved columns. Visitors can explore the open-air crafts market surrounding the church and shop at Sna Jolobil for traditional weavings by local women artisans.
One of those "must" stops in San Cris. The outside is stunning and marvelous. The inside takes your breath away because it is all covered on gold. Next to it is the traditional hand crafts made from indigenous people of the region, so all of you see is worth the price and it's value in culture.
María G — Google review
Nice church from the outside. Not always open and the way towards the church... mind your wallet, you will spent money on the souvenir market 🤣🤣 we went back twice and everytime my wallet was emptier than when I went
Bart — Google review
Interesting well decorated front wall. Entrance is on the side. Inside a big wooden wall with gold paint. Never seen these solutions before.
Tamás T — Google review
I love this architecture piece of jewel. 🌻✨
Omm S — Google review
beatufiful and quiet church, is astonishing both outside and inside. not recommended for tourists as you could be interrupting the peace and quietness of the people inside
Jair O — Google review
Don’t miss this church, museum and the market around!
Keewi H — Google review
Beautiful church but hard to appreciate at the moment. Closed off for renovations and you can't go inside (just like the cathedral). You can't even appreciate what's left to see from the outside, since the surrounding areas normally belonging to the church are now fully "squatted" by the "artisanal market".
Jogchem G — Google review
This Church was restored and is one of the most beautiful on Chiapas. The monastery with its church was built in the 16th century, with the monastery secularized later. The church retains its original function. The building with two courtyards was restored between 1999 and 2002 to become a community and cultural center, with the Museo de la Laca, founded in 1952, moved inside to take up much of the upper floor. This museum contains about 450 pieces from various parts of Mexico and Asia, mostly made in the 20th century. The complex also contains halls with permanent and temporary exhibits along with an auditorium and various types of workshops. The former monastery complex was built along with the Santo Domingo church on a small hill overlooking the Grijalva River, in the second half of the 16th century, attributed to Pedro de Barrientos and Juan Alonso. The church portion is one of the best preserved from the 16th century in Chiapas. The former monastery is behind the large church with two main courtyards. It was secularized during the Reform War with the church retaining its original function. It underwent its most recent restoration between 1999 and 2002 in order to make it a community and cultural center for the city of Chiapa de Corzo, with the Museo de la Laca moving into it. It, along with other facilities and operations, is managed by the Consejo Estatal para la Cultura y la Artes of Chiapas (CONECULTA). The entire building is officially called the Casa Escuela de Tradiciones but it is most commonly called the Museo de la Laca, although this museum only takes up most of the upper floor.

Specialty Museums
Nestled in the heart of San Cristobal, the Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya is a vibrant museum that celebrates the rich tapestry of traditional textiles from Mexico and Central America. This cultural gem boasts an impressive collection of over 500 hand-woven pieces, with a special focus on Chiapas huipiles and tunics. Visitors can explore not only the stunning displays but also delve deeper by opening drawers filled with additional striking examples of textile craftsmanship.
An absolutely amazing museum! I have almost no interest in textiles and I was blown away. The first floor is original examples of textiles (which are amazing) and all sorts of artifacts. The second floor is modern examples of clothing from different areas in Chiapas. Sprinkle in beautiful artwork throughout the museum. And the building is stunning. The market outside is beautiful too. All this is free too! Do Not Miss This Experience!
David P — Google review
An Outstanding Textile Museum – A Must-Visit for History and Culture Enthusiasts! I recently had the pleasure of visiting this incredible textile museum, and I can honestly say it exceeded my expectations. Best of all, entry was completely free, making it accessible to everyone. The museum is packed with a diverse range of exhibits, showcasing the rich history of textiles from various cultures and eras. Each display was thoughtfully curated, offering fascinating insights into traditional craftsmanship, techniques, and the cultural significance of textiles around the world. The building itself is a stunning piece of architecture, adding to the overall experience. Its elegant design and historic charm create a perfect setting for the exhibits. Unlike some other museums like the jade and amber museums, which often feel more like shops selling souvenirs, this museum is dedicated solely to education and preservation. It offers a genuine, immersive experience that truly highlights the artistry and cultural importance of textiles. Whether you're a history buff, an art lover, or simply looking for an enriching day out, this museum is definitely worth a visit. It’s a wonderful place to learn, appreciate craftsmanship, and enjoy a peaceful stroll through history. I highly recommend it to anyone passing through the area!

Incredible experience! One of the highlights of my trip to San Cristóbal! It’s fabulous to see the talent the pattern makers possess and it’s free! Don’t miss it 🤩🕺🏻
DAVID M — Google review
It's a nice, informative museum in an impressive building with good view of the city. I recently took a sewing course, so there was plenty of colour, stitch and pattern to study. I was there around 4pm on a Thursday, and I was the only one inside.
Lg T — Google review
The "Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya" was an amazing experience. We came on a Sunday so the admission fee was free (0$ only on Sundays). It was a beautiful collection of textiles and artifacts from Guatemala and Mexico, I spent hours looking through their amazing collection of fabrics and weavings and quilts.
Eli D — Google review
If you want to learn about San Cristobal's history this is a good place to start. They have in exhibition ceramic sculptures of the first civilization in the state also they have artifacts from the Spanish Conquest, but the best and my favourite part is the Textile exhibition, it's not a big exhibition but it has a lot of different textiles from Chiapas and from Guatemala.
Phasis — Google review
The best textile museum I've been to in Mexico, absolutely top quality. Free to get in. Excellent ancient relics. Do not miss out.
Toby S — Google review
FANTASTIC museum! One of the best museums dedicated to textiles I have ever been to (and I have been to many in many countries). Huge collection, wonderful service by the staff; you can see the reverence the Mayan textiles and its history are treated with. A favorite place in SanCris, and in México. GRACIAS for allowing us to witness the talent of such a marvelous culture.

Mercado de Dulces y Artesanías Ámbar is a vibrant indoor shopping destination located near the Iglesia de San Francisco. Here, visitors can find an array of handcrafted items, including clothing and jewelry, as well as delicious baked treats and local sweets.
Excellent place to find crafts from Chiapas... I recommend the second floor you will find better prices and more Amber and crafts than the first floor the restroom are... Well let me put it like this you don't want to go in there ;)... There is no parking lot so you will need to find a spot in the street....

We stopped here as part of the Free Walking Tour. The guide introduced us to one of the amber artisans who gave an informative talk. Then she bought some local sweets for us to try.

This mercado is 2 floors and a great spot to buy your souvenirs They have so many handcrafted items and prices are a lot better than those stores in the center. There is always a room for negotiation

Colorful and full of goodies. A quieter corner of San Cristóbal at stonethrow distance from the central plaza.
Alx M — Google review
Very interesting place, lots of crafts, jewelry and delicious food. Very clean and well organized. Highly recommended.
Jesus G — Google review
The inside part is pretty lame, overpriced textiles that you should really make the effort to buy from the source - which is the markets in the indigenous villages surrounding the city. Zinacantan, Chamula, etc... But the outdoor restaurant area has a bunch of remarkably cheap and authentic local dishes - pick an establishment that looks busy, and enjoy.
Sam R — Google review
Beautiful artesian market with authentic sweets and food.

The Museo Mesoamericano del Jade, located in San Cristobal de Las Casas, Mexico, is a museum that showcases the significance of jade in Mesoamerican history and culture. The museum is housed within La Casa del Jade, a cultural center known for its expertise in jade.
Amazing museum, definitely worth a visit even if you don't have much time in San Cristobal. The pieces are beautiful, the presentation is on point and the accompanying information is quite interesting
Antoine P — Google review
Very interesting geological and cultural / anthropological displays of the history of jade in Mesoamerica. The English option is a simple booklet with translations of the signs. However, in the extremely dark exhibit halls, it's nearly impossible to read and to match up with the maps and artifacts. If you're lucky, you'll see a craftsman working but there is no interaction or explanation and, as much of the machinery is very loud and their have headphones and we don't, it doesn't encourage you to linger and watch. There was a sign advertising free Mexican liguor tastings but nothing was offered. Many options for purchase. Worth a short visit for good overview.
Zoe D — Google review
The museum was quite an interesting place to visit! It had a wide array of fascinating exhibits that captured my attention. However, I found it a bit disappointing that the guide provided all the information at the very beginning of the tour and then simply left us to explore on our own. This approach made it challenging to fully appreciate the details and context of each exhibit as we moved through the museum. Despite this, there were still many cool and intriguing items to see, which made the visit worthwhile.
Wattle B — Google review
The museum has a lot of potential and there's still some space to improve, that's why the 4 stars!
Karnishe — Google review
Enjoyed our visit to this museum where you will not only learn about jade but also about how various cultures used and appreciated the gem. Quite interesting. The museum store sells real jade so don't expect street and market prices. Low entrance fee. Allow one to 1.5 hours.
Carlos R — Google review
I don't know why this place got low reviews. It was small and yes, the pieces are reproductions, but it was highly informative and a fascinting blend of mesoamerican and geological history. They even had an English booklet to translate all the signs. There's a replication of Pakal's funeral tomb at the back which was also beautiful both for history buffs and the casual visitor alike. The gift shop was very expensive but treated like an extension of the museum (especially with the live, built-workshop) it was lovely to look at. Plus you get a discount at the Kakao museum with your ticket from here which makes for a nice afternoon combined.
Marta B — Google review
Lots of pre-Columbian examples of jade statues, masks, figurines. Worth the 30 pesos. Much more than the pics posted.

We came here a few times during our stay in San Cristobal. Their food are different from other restaurants around here with Asian twist option. We like all what we ordered and would recommend to ask them not to put sugar into Thai dishes in their menu.

This is my second time eating here and I’m truly blown away by how amazing the food is. Even just the roasted vegetables are the best I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. I had the red curry and the Thai soup and both were top tier in flavour. Will be back.

My favorite restaurant in Mexico. I go to the place every time I visit San Cristobal. I've never had a dish I didn't like. Salmon is amazing, no fishy taste, crispy. The asian food there is spectacular. The SALADS are amazing too. The deserts are great. I don't know how the kitchen keeps up to all these variations they have on their menu and keep them tasty. Salute goes out to them! They could improve the pasta as the noodles are store bought, they could easily buy/make fresh pasta. The the wood chairs are extremely uncomfortable and almost like tourture, but worth it.

A real waste of a restaurant. Such a beautiful restaurant, amazing ambience with an appealing menu. With the good reviews I really expected something great, but sadly it all falls flat. The service is unprofessional, doesn't explain dishes properly and rude, poking us when they try to get our attention and serving out our dishes at different times. The burrito was hands down the worst I have ever had, it was soggy, had zero balance in flavour and just tasted bad, the fries on the other hand were amazing which was honestly the only plus of my meal. Overall I would avoid this place as there are many better restaurants in the area.

One of my favourites restaurants in San Cristobal, if you are looking for something different try this place you will absolutely love it! The service is great, the food is amazing and the vibe is very unique!

Absolutely amazing food. The gin and tonics are incredibly fresh and the noodle dishes were some of the best I’ve had. If your in San Cristobal, you must come here for lunch or dinner.

What to say about the best restaurant in San Cristóbal de las Casas. Fantastic atmosphere and a menu that could try everything. I recommend the arrachera steak and the local craft beers. Undoubtedly a gastronomic delight.

Excellent place. Run by all women who are lovely. The food is very variety and great. Lots of international modern dishes. One dish is enough person. The decor could be anywhere.

So so beautiful, so cosy, such delicious comfort food. The perfect place for our last dinner in San Cristobal. It was a rainy night but the rain made it feel even more hygge!!!!!

While the place is more upscale than others, it's well worth the hype. I enjoyed eating and working here. The food was delicious, servers were attentive and kind, and the patio outside was my favorite place to work on the computer and read. It's very busy though, so keep that in mind in case you need a quieter place. I would definitely return, it's a fave of mine 🙏🏼🥰

Great atmosphere, the decoration is beautiful. We fell in love with the interior decoration. The food was also really good, drinks super ok and overall a great place. I will definitely come back. Good taste, good service, good location and amazing decor.

I went here with high expectations. Sadly, the two barking dogs and the out of control screaming child ended that. The food was okay, but I’ve had better in San Cris.

The place is very nice it was a recommendation from a local I met eating at another place and it was a great choice the only thing to know they don’t serve lunch until after 1:30 I got there at 12 and had to come back but I ordered their especial which was a soup, chile en nogada that is one of my favorites and a guava drink all for $150 pesos, I was very satisfied and I recommend this place

Very nice Cafe and restaurant! We came here for breakfast and it was absolutely delicious. I had the breakfast nachos with steak which was the perfect way to start the day! Service was very friendly and quick. There is also live music often! The way the place was decorated together with the music created a great ambience. Can highly recommend checking them out!

La Viña de Bacco is a charming wine bar and tapas restaurant located in the heart of San Cristobal. The cozy atmosphere, with dining on old wine barrels, creates a unique experience for visitors. Guests can enjoy a wide selection of Mexican, Chilean, Argentinian, Italian, and Spanish wines at affordable prices. Live music adds to the vibrant ambiance as locals and tourists gather around small outdoor tables to sip on beer and wine.
Such a lively and fun spot for a group! We were recommended this tapas bar at our hostel. The opportunity to try a wide variety of wines at such a stellar price point went down a treat! The tapa with the broccolini on a slice of baguette was definitely the crowd favourite

I was here on a Monday evening. the atmosphere was great. there was a street artist playing song in front of the establishment. the place was busy and is a good place to people watch. you get free tapas with each drink. wine starts at 30 pesos. I tried a Mexican vine and it was decent. the service was prompt.

Unique and colourful bar! With quick service and great staff! Very lively in the later evening. Everyone that is sat is given a few tiny eats like popcorn and papas on bread. The alcohol is all reasonably priced so cheers! Only real negative thing to say is the guac tasted frozen/chemically was really hard to eat.

Nice place to relax and have a drink in the afternoon. Every drink comes with a free tapas. Right by the street musician and it's a pedestrian street, so no cars and no fumes. Great atmosphere.
Diane B — Google review
I rated the food a 4 but it is good. I rarely give 5 stars for food that is not gourmet level. Just so you know that there is nothing wrong with the food. However, the big standout for us were the great service. Diana was very nice and attentive and always there when we needed her. The vibe of this place was excellent! It has communal tables which is a great way to meet other people, which appeared to us to be mostly locals. We speak Spanish but one of our table mates spoke very clear English to us, so I think non-Spanish speakers would have no problem here. It is a cozy place, filled with interesting, cool people, great music (classic rock when we were there) and just an all around place to have a good time. It was a packed so I assume it is a very popular place. We will definitely return.

Restaurant
Tierra y Cielo Restaurante offers a unique dining experience in San Cristobal de las Casas, featuring regional specialties like mole and seafood served in a mission-style dining room with wood-beam ceilings. Chef Marta Zepeda is dedicated to working with ancestral ingredients and implementing socially inclusive policies to benefit the local community. The menu highlights Chiapanecan cuisine made with high-quality products, promoting fair trade practices.
This restaurant is undoubtedly one of the finest dining spots in the city and arguably among the best in all of Mexico -a must if you want a culinary experience that takes you through truly local ingredients and dishes in a nice setting. It’s located in a typical, charming colonial house with a variety of seating areas, a sophisticated decor and dim lights in the evening for a refined atmosphere. I particularly liked the area with bookshelves lining an entire wall. The restaurant has both a seasonal menu (a la carte) and a tasting one that comes with different pairing options: aguas frescas, craft beer or wine. To enjoy the latter, you need to budget around 3 hours and 1,900 pesos. I tried the seasonal menu. The mole coleto with prawn was exquisite and I do recommend it. The mole, with its rich combination of cacao, almond, and chile, provided a complex yet harmonious flavour profile that paired wonderfully with the delicate saltiness of the prawns. It could also be prepared with chicken. For those unfamiliar with mole, the dish has a quite unique, intense taste, so I recommend approaching it with an open mind - it’s a bold choice and one that will likely surprise your palate. Coleto means from San Cristobal. My dessert was the classic crème brûlée with orange on top, and it was everything you want in a perfect one: creamy but not heavy with a thin caramelized crunch on top, with the orange bringing freshness and balance. The service is impeccable, and the staff were prompt and courteous. It all left me eager to go back!

Lovely experience, the wait staff was incredibly warm, took their time to explain the origin and significance of the ingredients, and made our visit very special. They happened to be out of our first choice desert that night so we went with the nieve de calabaza and it was INCREDIBLE - just goes to show you can't really go wrong with their menu, there is something delicious for everyone here. One of my colleagues is a vegetarian and she really enjoyed the meal as well. Highly recommend while you're in San Cristobal

Must go place in St. Cristóbal! Martha and her husband gave us great recommendations. They are passionate about food and they care about the qualities!! Every single dishes/drinks are highly unique but all inspired by local history and ingredients. We had breakfast here and came back for lunch on the same day. We have been in many Michelin restaurants in Aisia and Europe. This one is as good as those world class ones! And they won many national awards already!!

My best culinary experience in Mexico. A fine dining proposition, but without pretention, fully local and original. I had the mole and it was divine, different from the usual rustic mole served in Puebla. Eventually I found a very well cooked chicken in Mexico. The desert was very good too. Impressive! This place should be on the list of any food amateur, and is a real chance to experience fine dining at an affordable price! (for westerners unfortunately).

One of my favorite restaurants in San Cris. Impeccable service and food was creative and delicious. Was my first time to see mixed blue and yellow tortilla. They provided amuse bouche and also gave us shot of pox/posh for free. The pan de muerto was made to order so it was the best I ever had. We also worked here for a bit; wifi was decent when we went. Pleasant and elegant ambience; definitely must-try place while you’re here

This was my best meal in San Cristobal without a doubt. It was gourmet level food and used many of the local ingredients to accomplish this. From the beet and carrot chalupa, tortillas from 3 different grains, to the chicken mole with plantain and cheese to the chocolate tamal with fruit purée and flowers. It was excellent and the service was too. Although it was smaller portions I was not able to finish the chocolate tamal. It was really filling. I also had a Mexican wine. I could not believe the price was $25USD for total. This is a great value for the quality. I know that is expensive in comparison in this area but it is well worth the price.

Probably the best restaurant I have been to during my visit to Mexico. Great interpretation of the Mexican cuisine with modern touches that will make you feel a superb culinary experience. We ordered the seasonal menu, which is composed of: starters + two main dishes (to choose between 3 options) + dessert. Do not miss the 'Gordita de Chamorro', your would be avoiding the best dish on my opinion. Great service too. 5 stars to chef Marta Cepeda & team

BangCook Tailandés is a Thai restaurant located in San Cristobal de las Casas, offering authentic Thai cuisine and other Asian dishes. Situated on the ground floor of Plaza San Agustin, it provides an upscale setting for diners to enjoy a variety of options including vegetarian and gluten-free dishes. The menu features traditional Thai delicacies such as pad-thai and curries, complemented by a selection of cocktails.
I couldn't have asked for a better curry dish. The Seafood Green Curry was very spicy and to my liking. The shrimp seemed very fresh. The deep fried sweet potato chips were a nice accent. The staff was attentive. EDIT: Returned a few nights later. Ordered the Seafood Pad Thai. I was not disappointed. I like that they separated the spices and peanuts. This allowed me to add as a wished. I liked the cilantro garnish. This added an unusual flavor flourish. Great food and drinks.
Perfectly L — Google review
The food was great however, I would like to leave constructive feedback. The servers were not knowledgeable about gluten free options. I think it would be great to educate them especially since the menu is marked. After being told by 2 different servers that the pad thai was not gluten free, the rice dishes either, and the fish sauce; my partner did not feel comfortable ordering anything.

Very, very friendly service, staff spoke good English. Decent Thai dishes, tempura was served with the wrong sauce but overall tasty. Satay sauce was watery. Cocktail was good! Pretty sterile big city ambiance but clean and tidy...

Wow. We loved this place. The food was delicious. They worked around my soy and mango allergies. We stayed here 10 nights and 8 here 3 x.

Pretty good Thai food for being so far from Asia. We had the spring rolls, Pad Thai, and Tom Kah Gai. Everything was tasty. We also had Jasmine tea which came in individual kettles and was delicious. It's located inside Esquina Agustin which has several other restaurants inside, all good.
Emily S — Google review
Great food, good service, generous pours. Went here by myself for lunch/dinner and did not disappoint. Satay pork skewer entree was excellent, the pork had heaps of flavour and was beautifully tender. Also a large portion for an entree. Red curry was very nice and a good quantity of meat and vegetables but could have used a bit more spice in my opinion. After the entree and a coffee I only made it half way through the curry.
Mike N — Google review
Very clean and presentable. Nice atmosphere. You can watch as they cook your food. Went there more than once over several years and the experience remains a good one. Large portion sizes. The prices are very accessible.
Aubin B — Google review
Backing up other reviews that the food is not authentic. I ordered yellow curry, it had weirdly thick texture, maybe due to starch? and it was sweet🙄. I definitely won't return. The chips starter was good though.

Just PHO You is a cozy little spot in San Cristobal de Las Casas that's perfect for fans of Vietnamese cuisine. Despite the wait and the evening crowds, this simple Asian restaurant offers a satisfying experience with its massive and warm beef noodle soup. The place is especially ideal on cold and gloomy days, serving up delicious vegan options alongside great service and big portions.
We discovered the small Asian restaurant by chance while passing by and the possibility to get something different from Mexican food made us decide to eat here. And we did not regret our decision. The food was very tasty, although the pho did not taste like a typical pho. The staff was extremely nice and took good care of us. We would recommend a visit to the restaurant!

I only had the pho noodle soup with pork because I was skeptical first about having Vietnamese food here. Oh I was so wrong! This could be one of the best pho I’d ever had in my life!! I even finished drinkkng all the soup. The sprouts and the pork meatballs integrate so well with the taste of the soup. I truly recommend!

After multiple attempts to eat here, they were finally open today! Yummy soy meat vegan option here was delicious. Great & very attentive service, great food, big portions & ambiance. Food does take awhile but that’s to be expected here as everything is made super fresh. The banh mi is HUGE! Between 2 of us, we had to take half of it home and the rest of our food, pho and chow mein. I’ll definitely return again😊 As of August 21st, 2021, they’re opening hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 1-9. Although most businesses here in San Cris will close early if they’re not busy, just to keep in mind.

I've been there 3 times during my time in San Chris. Everytime the food was amazing and the staff lovely. Even when it was quite full and stressful for the one waitress once, she still had a smile on her face! The portions are filling. Guau, guau, guau!!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️that’s some of the best vegan food I had in all of Mexiko (and maybe beyond). So delicious! Highly recommend! I had the sopa del días, taco pastor and tamales! Muy delicioso❤️‍🔥super nice staff, cute place, amazing food!

Visited three times during my short stay in San Cristobal for delicious and very affordable vegan food! The tofu was fantastic - reminded me of how I make it at home - and the portions were all very generous and filling.

Finally, I could enjoy vegan mole and a traditional Mexican breakfast without altering the entire dish. The all-vegan menu is diverse enough to give everyone something. They even have amazing fresh juices (I got the immunity juice). I chose to sit out back without knowing that their trash and extra kitchen items are behind a fence back there. This just meant that breakfast was accompanied by employees dragging trash by me, or running to get some supply for the kitchen. It was busier because of this. Still…it’s likely not like that later in the day, so don’t let that ambience issue stop you from enjoying this place. It’s a great stop off en route to the Amber Museum for morning breakfast.

One word to describe this place: underrated, at least on a Tuesday night. My favorite café in San Cristóbal and maybe top all time so far. Cafe for jazz lovers. I highly recommend the té frutas de la passion. Live music starting at 8pm daily. But call to confirm. Music is like son cuban and jazz.

Beautiful (if not local) design, nice calm atmosphere. This place is located within a sort of restaurants mall, off of one of the main walking streets. I only had the eggs Benedict, they were over done (which lost them a star), and the exact copy of the eggs Benedict breakfast offered and better executed in the Sarajevo cafe. Would recommend a visit if it’s on your way but not worth a special effort.

Delicious. So so good. Come and get the Aztec Soup. Comes in a tea pot that they pour in for you to add some magic. It is delicious and hearty. Nice bits of chicken and these crispy shards that sort of turn into a noodle once the soups in. Comes with a side of cream and cheese that you can add to make it even better. It’s a must.

Wow a place that got ALL the Mexican soups in all regions! I can’t pass this deal it’s too goof to be true. We came in around 3pm and the place was packed with only one open table. We ordered a arroz con Ollita (chicken soup with corn and rice) and caldero (black bean soup with chicharrón and ribs) holy that black bean soup was so good and I also love the chicken soup. I want to come back for more.

Nothing life changing, but everything was good. The pozole required adding lots of additional spice for me, but it had plenty of chicken and once doctored up was good. One of my favorite things was actually the horchata that had no sugar added to it. It was really refreshing and not overwhelmingly sweet like many on the street.

Look at this amazing auténtico almorzado. I had a hot tip about this place and it was incredible. Everyone so friendly. And so local. We were here last year. It was great. That is why we came back. Big mistake. Service was shocking. They forgot my beer. Then forgot to give me a spoon for my soup. One of the salsas that came with the totopos was rotten. It was fermenting in the bowl. We let the waiter know and he didnt seem bothered. I had to doctor the soup with salt and spice to give it flavour. It was very bland. This will be our last visit.

El Secreto is a traditional restaurant in San Cristobal de las Casas that offers a fusion of flavors using fresh, organic, and traditional local ingredients. Their menu features original dishes that blend modernity with tradition, showcasing the essence of Mexican cuisine and especially Chiapas. From delicious tamales to chipilin soup, risotto, and salmon, the restaurant also incorporates a subtle Italian touch into their desserts while skillfully integrating the flavors of Chiapas and its chocolate.
My dad and I came across this place while walking down the street and decided to stop in for dinner because it looked inviting—and we’re so glad we did. From the moment we sat down, the experience was wonderful. The drinks were absolutely amazing—I had the best hot chocolate I’ve ever tasted, rich and perfectly made. They surprised us with several complimentary appetizers, which was such a nice touch. Everything they brought out was flavorful and well-prepared. For our main dish, we shared the duck tacos, and they were outstanding—tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. You could tell a lot of care went into the food. Even though we weren’t planning on getting dessert, we decided to try one. I don’t remember the exact name, but it reminded us of cornbread—it was warm, comforting, and just the right amount of sweet. A perfect ending to the meal. Our server, Rolando, was incredibly kind and attentive throughout the night. He made the whole experience even better with his thoughtful service and welcoming attitude. This dinner ended up being one of the most memorable meals of our trip. Highly recommend!

What an amazing place. You only pop in to have a look at the dinner menu but we decided on the spot to stay and have lunch. It was around 4PM but they were very happy to serve us. Loved the attentive service and all the food. Every single dish was delicious with a spotless presentation. For the quality of food that you get prices are more than convenient. The duck tacos were delicious. We've been missing vegetables so much since we started travelling around Mexico that the asparagus and garlic dish blew our minds hahahah
Nikko — Google review
One of the most memorable meals I have had. I cannot imagine making a trip to Mexico and missing having eaten here. The service was attentive. professional, and enjoyable. Rolando and Pako were an amazing team. We ate around 8:30 and the restaurant was not busy. Even so, the place was immaculate, and decorated comfortably and open. We felt very welcomed. We did not have alcohol, instead opting for the hot chocolate and cold tascalate con leche. We shared the duck tacos and the roasted pig leg. Small tastes featuring local ingredients were first presented by the chef to prepare us for our meal. The duck tacos on our visit were perfect, juicy and well seasoned for our taste balancing the fat with the sour of the red cabbage. The salsa Verde was amazing and creamy and mild enough for a gringo palate with no problem. The square of cheese was functional to hold the Tacos and add to the presentation but was a treat to finish each taco with. The pork leg was something dreams are made of. Succulent and tender enough to cut or rather just separate with a fork. The skin a dark reddish brown color as crispy and beautiful as the best Peking duck. Even the most crisp portion was not burned and melted in your mouth. I think you would call this chicharon? Presentation and plating was of the highest standards. The accompaniments were beautifuly cooked and arranged. The beans cooked perfectly and enhanced the flavor s of the pork. The mole sauce on the side also balanced the fat of the pok. The roaster spicy hot green peoers were amazing although way too hot for my palate, although the sting was quickly dissipated by the fat from the pork. It was wonderful with the corn tortillas. For dessert we had the corn flan adding the rich textures and flavors of San Christibal and Chiapas and a wonderful ending to a memorable meal.

I don't want El Secreto to be so much of a secret that it goes out of business, so I'm happy to share this review. Located in a boutique hotel, this gem of a restaurant is excellent. Our server, Antonio (aided by Ronaldo) was friendly and attentive. He needed no convincing to take my extensive list of allergies to Chef Rosy rather than make assumptions about what food on the menu would be safe for me. As it turns out, many dishes were safe for me, and we had an outstanding meal. Rosy is a fantastic chef, who cooks with flair and originality, successfully combining local ingredients in novel ways to put a twist on Mexican cuisine. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Really nice guy as well! The waiters are attentive and the food is delicious! "Tuna tartar" was delicious. Try the MEZCAL ice cream! When you are travelling Mexico but want a break from foodtrucks and cheap tacos, go to El Secreto! Super food and super service! During the time we were there the waiter would bring us some tasters from the kitchen that they prepared. For example the local Huitlacoche on a taster bite, it was exquisite! The food was very good, but the best platter was the Duck Taquitos starter dish, you have to taste it if you visit San Cristobal!

Superb service. The food is great. My favorite is the grilled cheese asparagus. The black bean chorizo soup is a little thick so it didn’t do it for me. The chicken with potato carrot and guacamole was great, especially with the sweet sauce.

Great little airport! I can say it's a lot better than the Monterrey airport, the Mexico City one, and others. You don't have to walk to your plane; you always leave from an assigned door. The air conditioning is always cold, the restrooms are very clean, and the whole airport smells nice. There are a few restaurants and bars, and you have a lot of places to choose from that offer coffee. In general, it's a very well-organized airport.

I think that it's a lovely little airport with just the right amount of services. The check in and security was smooth and timely. The bathrooms were all clean. There is a large lounge with new tables upstairs to have your own lunch. The choices for coffee and snacks is stellar - Cacao Nativa, Cafeologia, la frandiase. The chairs could have a place to set a drink or charge a phone. It would be a great addition.

Flying through TGZ is a smooth and pleasant experience overall. This modern terminal, inaugurated in 2006 and expanded most recently in 2024, handles around 1.7 million passengers annually and ranks among Mexico’s top 20 busiest airports . ✈️ Highlights: Well-designed, easy to navigate terminal—check-in kiosks, 18 counters, and clear separation between arrivals and departures make for efficient flow . Excellent amenities—complimentary Wi‑Fi, a VIP lounge, ATMs, cafés, baggage claims that work quickly, and shops selling local crafts and snacks . Friendly, helpful staff—passengers consistently appreciate the helpful staff and flight attendants, with fast baggage handling upon arrival . ⚠️ Minor suggestions: Restroom maintenance—men’s restrooms sometimes receive complaints for smell, though this seems isolated . Peak-hour traffic—occasional crowding during high-traffic hours and delays from airlines like Interjet have been noted .

TGZ airport is clean, quick. There are many rental car companies. But I arrived at TGZ at 5pm and called D*taxi, paying 760mxn to San Cristóbal de la Casas.

Small airport but fairly new, it isn’t very busy. There is only an Aeromexico counter to buy your tickets directly at the airport, all other airlines you have to buy online or through the call Center. There’s a couple restaurants once you pass security and a small bar also
Stephania R — Google review
Small nice airport with great view to the landing area in the third floor. There are some businesses to eat and drink and expendable machines so you can buy something cheap like sodas and bimbo or sabritas brand stuff. It is clean and it is not cosy.

Nice, new and clean Airport but there is no public transportation to the city. Once you’re at the exit way, everyone will scream taxi taxi taxi at you and they cost 380mxn from the airport to the city. That’s way too pricey
Jhawhayeehaw — Google review
Though the airport is far from the city it serves, it’s really nice small airport. Easy to go through, car rental stalls on site and friendly staff.
