Witzenberg Municipality in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Witzenberg Municipality, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Witzenberg Municipality, centered on towns like Ceres, Tulbagh and Wolseley, offers classic Western Cape scenery with mountain passes, fruit orchards and vineyards. With favorites like Matroosberg Nature Reserve, Wimpy, and Harvest Table Bistro @ Winterberg Inn, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Wimpy and Fynbos Café & Farmstall so you can get the best taste of Witzenberg Municipality while you’re here. Nature & Parks
Nature & Wildlife Areas
Nestled in Ceres, the Matroosberg Nature Reserve offers a range of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. In winter, the reserve transforms into a snowy wonderland, perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and ice climbing. Other seasonal activities include cherry picking, abseiling, hiking, and mountain biking. The vast reserve features hiking trails that lead to breathtaking views and challenging 4x4 tracks (currently closed due to rain damage).
Officially the highest peak we have climbed. Starting at 1250m above sea level and takes you up to the peak at 2249m which makes it the third highest peak in the Western Cape, Boland Region. 19km will get you huffing and puffing but the majestic mountains and awesome views will calm you down, hopefully. Jeep track available for the 4x4 enthusiasts, but it's no joy drive. It's a gradual climb to Grootkopkloof where the Jeep track ends for the 4x4s. But for the hikers its gets serious from here with another 2 hours to the peak. Very rocky path so stay focused when stepping. You will pass a zip line station house , not sure if it's operational, but continue until the top where you will be rewarded with mindblowing views and the mountains surroundings is something to behold. The trail is easy to follow and well kept. In winter with the snow is another story. Gates opens at 8, so and early start is recommended. It's a full day hike so prepare accordingly and dress appropriately. My pics don't do justice, so get out there and experience what 2249m above sea level feels like. You will love it..take in the beauty, juice up, refuel and start your way back down the same way.....hike smart and stay safe.

Matroosberg was amazing this past weekend. Snow was very much visible but not as low as expected. We have to hike up to get proper snow but enough mud to have fun with

Wonderful place to visit, had the warmest welcome, our host was very attentive and helpful. We stayed at the traditional campsite (they do have campsites with electricity points too) Area is well kept and plenty to do and see. Would definitely recommend.

We went as a big group of 50 for a weekend of hiking. The reserve is massive. There is a trail up to the top which takes around 3.5 hours one way. From there it is possible to continue to the summit with another 2 hours walk. There is a very challenging 4x4 track which meets the walking trail at the top but is closed due to rain damage. On the way you see multiple waterfalls and streams especially after rains. It is worth hiking all the way for the views. If you are lucky you may get some snow on top. The trail is quite dangerous due to stream crossings and slippery paths so best done in a group. The accommodation huts are good. Food at the restaurant is also quite good but the order takes long if there are too many people. The roads inside are all gravel roads which can be tackled with a small car but must be very careful.

Firstly, we stayed in Goathander cottage, 2 couples with 1 child. Very misleading on the website as it sleeps 6, not 1 couple and children, double bed in one room and 2 Single beds in the braai/kitchen area. The matrasses are old and uncomfortable with pull out beds underneath the singles, and with a not very big room we had to sleep in could not get out of bed with 1 being pulled out for the little one. O AND REMEMBER, these beds are also your lounge area during the day!! With old bedding and scatter cushions that has had its days. The bathroom is so small that we found it difficult to get dressed in seeing that we did not have a separate room of our own with water leaking onto the floor after a shower. Secondly, the kitchen, having to make food in there was quite disgusting, the grime you can scrape off the wall with your nail as it has not been cleaned in a very long time. Thirdly, we visited 22 August and only received our breakage deposit today the 1st of October. Lastly, the money paid for a weekend away we expected so much more than a small dark cottage with little space to sleep and having to share our bedroom with the braai area and kitchen. VERY MISLEADING ON THE PHOTOS I give 1 star for the views only.

Even though the weather man predicted a good chance of snow, we unfortunately did not get to physically touch the snow. Only experienced the snow capped mountains, but nevertheless the experience, the hike, the spectacular views, the cold, the hospitality, the first time chancing... taking out our own 4x4 and getting down n dirty... Or should I say muddy!😁 Was all well worth it! Thank you Matroosberg, Thank you Hannelie🙏 for the warm welcome! Justin....apologies don't know your surname bud...But A Big Thank U for pulling us out of the bogged embankment we slid into with our Landy which we could not get out of without your Awesome Looking Jeep and it's high torqued winch's help! Much appreciated! 🙏 Most of all our four legged dogged friend that stole the hearts of the two women in my life, my wife and daughter!.... Pikkie❤️.... You handsome devil you, you had my ladies in tears when it was time to leave! Hope to see you soon pal!! Thank you to you all!! Wonderful experience!! 🙏

Stayed at the private campsite and had a wonderful time! Private bathroom - toilet, basin and shower setup inside a 5000 liter tank - unique and wonderful idea and amazing water pressure. Campsite was peaceful, stars were amazing and the hiking options are great. Staff were all very friendly. Really can't complain about anything and made for a fabulous weekend in nature.

From 3yrs old to now again as 7 yr old. Need to share this with every parent of a young, very young kid. Getting a coffee at the coffee shop next to it - I saw the age saying "from 3 years". My son was 3 at the time. I asked my son if he'd love to do this. He sais "yes!". My wife - surprisingly - said "ok". It was an amazing experience. Of course safety works perfectly. Harnasses. Safety checks. All perfect. He clicks on to the zipline and you as adult hang behind him. He's safely connected to you. Son loved it! Better yet. He was saying "well done mama, well done!" Everytime his mom arrived at a platform. Last Sunday we went again. My son's now 7. He went alone this time. The calm confidence. The awareness of what to do and not to do. The joy. Aunt, nieces, wife, we all joined. The number of ziplines, the difference of each. It's a ride! And not too scary so the whole family is happy to go. Even the ones with some vertigo like my 15yr old niece. An absolute must do to see a young kid take the lead and the family to follow. Share my feedback to any concerned mother ;-) It's safer than a outdoor play area. You can quote me on that.
Marcus Z — Google review
My first time. The entire management and the guides very professional.
Eric C — Google review
Great fun. For those worried about heights, it's around 40m at the highest point. Ziplines last for around 30 seconds and there 8 as you make your way back down the mountain. Guides are very helpful and explain safety protocols very well.

What an absolutely amazing experience with the most friendly and informative staff in the office and out on the zip lines. We will definitely be back to enjoy the great views while doing all the lines from the top to the bottom. After the zip line there is a lovely coffee shop right next door to sit and have a nice meal and a cold drink or coffee.

The Creative Hub is a stunning little gem – perfect for a stop if you’re driving through! Set in a beautiful location, the space is filled with unique, handmade creations to browse and buy, which gives it such a charming and creative vibe. The coffee is absolutely amazing – seriously some of the best we’ve had in a while. The barista who helped us was super friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. They also offer a great selection of pies, wine, and other drinks. There’s a fantastic play area for kids and so much to look at, so everyone stays entertained. Whether you’re in the mood for a good coffee, a bite to eat, or just a relaxing wander through some local crafts, it’s a must-visit.

This vineyard offers stunning views as you approach, with a restaurant that has spacious ceilings, creating an open atmosphere. The estate provides the opportunity to purchase their own wine, olives, and olive oil. The food is beautifully presented and made with fresh ingredients. From delectable prawns to savory lamb and delightful brownies for dessert, the menu is sure to satisfy. The prices are reasonable considering the quality of the offerings.
Fantastic service and Excellent Wine . Nadia the head chef and owner of the restaurant accommodated our dietary requirements and made my partners birthday a magical experience. Our picnic was setup for us along with a picnic blanket and yummy goodies. I highly recommend Waverly Hills for any occasion. Well done. We will be back!!!

Venue, especially outside, rather run down and not maintained. Huge inside venue which would have great view over valley, but doors were closed and rooms totally empty (we visited in week day during school holiday). Staff member that explained the wines I tasted was friendly, but appeared distracted with other work at the computer. Good wine specials. There were no olives whatsoever.

Waverley Hills in Tulbagh is a beautiful spot, set in a breathtaking valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains during our winter visit. The setting alone makes it worth the trip! We did a wine tasting and really enjoyed the selection – they produce organic wines, which is a big plus. The tasting portions were a bit small (about one good sip per wine), so it felt a little limited, but the wines themselves were excellent. The lady helping us was very kind and made us feel welcome. Overall, a great experience in a stunning location. We ended up buying a bottle or two – can’t wait to enjoy them again at home!

Breathtaking views as you approach this stunning vineyard. The restaurant has high ceilings giving making it very open. You can purchase wine, olives and olive oil from the estate. The food was incredibly well presented and fresh. We had incredible prawns, delicious lamb and wonderful brownies to finish. Prices are extremely reasonable for the quality. They weren't able to accommodate last minute dietary requirements though for groups preventing some of our group from getting a decent main course though. However food was delicious and waitresses lovely if the chef was not able to accommodate requests.

Due to the weather we sat inside so couldn't appreciate the view. The food was very tasty, my Lamb Knuckle Curry was devine and others had Asian style Ribs and the Roast Sirlion. The Pinotage and Shiraz were also very nice. Highly recommended if you're in the area.

A delightful wine estate up on the hill overlooking the Tulbagh valley. The wine tasting wad enjoyable and the wine is good. The prices were reasonable and wine we liked was on special. The restaurant looks good but we were to early for lunch. If the food is as good ad the view and ambiance then it must be good.

I have been here many many times over the years. Things have changed. This branch must be closed- bad food and service. We travel alot to support our clients so we stop at alot of wimpys all over. This one had gone done - no idea the issue - if you cannot deliver good food and service then close your doors. No-one is clearly passionate about anything. We waited forever even though we were literally the only people. I had a meal which I refused to pay for. Enough said. So so sad and disappointed 😞

What a lovely place to visit. We stop here for some drinks and also some food as we were very hungry. The waitress immediately asked us what we wanted to drink when we sat down outside, and we had our drinks in less than 10 minutes. Food was also served quickly, and wow - the food was so tasty. This place is a gem. Even the manager/owner (well I think he was) came by to chat to us. While we were outside, they stoke a fire in the fireplace, and it added to the homely feeling. We heard about the animal sanctuary nearby, but it was a bit late in the afternoon to visit the animal sanctuary. They have a lovely shop, and I bought some incense sticks. We will come back for more food and to visit the animal sanctuary.

Very nice atmosphere, great service and food. Didn’t really care for the unisex bathrooms but the food made up for it. They are a very dog friendly restaurant and allowed our two shepherd mixs to sit on the patio. Very nice experience. 4 stars.

What a gem of a place! From the wonderfully relaxed, beautiful atmosphere to the warm welcome by Mike our waiter and Karien the owner - and the best peri-peri chicken livers. We will definitely pop in again when I’m this part of the world.

Living in Wolseley, Harvest Table has become our home away from home. The service is always very good and the food as well. Karien and her staff have become like our extended family. Whether you feel like a pizza, a burger or whatever you are in the mood for eating, you won't leave hungry.

This is the place to go to if you like Marrow Bone, trust me on this one!! Marrow bones cut length-wise and prepared in their pizza oven is served with lightly toasted farm bread and a lemon slice. Scoop some of it on the bread, spread it thinly, drizzle some lemon drops on it, add freshly ground pepper and a bit of salt - then eat yourself into a delightful stupor. You will go back for more :-)
