Historic Sites
Maison Folio is a typical 19th-century Creole house located in Hell Bourg, offering visitors a glimpse into the daily life of the past inhabitants and insights into Creole culture. The well-preserved house and garden provide an authentic experience, with period handcraft displays and aromatic plants. While the guides primarily offer information in French, the beautifully maintained garden features a variety of plants and fruit trees.
Interesting not only for gaining some insight into the history of this little village but also for botany enthusiasts. The garden is beautifully designed with a mix of fruits, herbs and orchids that make the entire area around the pavilion and fountain a real visual delight. The €5 entrance fee is well spent.

Nice tiny sightseeing in a quiet Street of Hellbourg. Pretty even by rainy weather.
Romain S — Google review
Very much authentic and charming 19th century creole style house of a former landlord called Folio. Impressive tropical garden. The entrance fee of 5€ was well worth it.
KW K — Google review
Beautiful house to visit. Really authentic Creole house which is well preserved. Unfortunately the guide and your is only available in French and no English information is provided. Would recommend to walk around a bit ! The garden is also great. Entrance without an guide was 4 € per person.
Max — Google review
Slightly overrated garden. The photocopied leaflet with information was such bad quality that we could hardly read anything.
Marie-Theres M — Google review
Well maintained garden with a variety of plants and fruit trees. The information was in French only like most places in Reunion Island
Amandeep S — Google review
For the love of god, save yourself the utter waste of time and money that is the “guided visit”: it’s just a lady going on and on for more than 1:30 hour about totally random things, from plants to birds to AI, that have nothing to do with the house or its history. I wanted to die

Cilaosa Parc Aventure is a family-friendly treetop adventure park located in the heart of a cedar forest. It offers seven trails, including one suitable for children as young as three years old. The park is known for its cool and attentive instructors who ensure a great experience for visitors. Nestled in the beautiful cirque of Cilaos, this attraction provides an opportunity to enjoy nature and outdoor activities while exploring the stunning surroundings of Reunion Island.
Excellent place. Really enjoyed the high ropes, tuition was great and the instructors were really friendly and helpful. Pay close attention to the directions as it's a little hard to find. Can't recommend this place enough. For the English, imagine GoApe but better.

Great fun with 5 and 7 year olds. Younger net course for the 5 year old (€10) was ideal, adults not allowed in but completely safe netting and fun high up kicking around balls. 7 year old was spoilt for choice (€18) with plenty of zip lines and obstacles, including some nice and high up. Nice being able to do it all yourself (parent accompanying, €22), easy to learn and can be demonstrated if french understanding isn't great. 3 hours is about right as it gets tiring

(Translated by Google) Great staff, responsive when needed, kind, funny, and welcoming. Nice course of varying levels: long, hard, easy, short, and hard... But the best was the purple course (100% zip line). Warm, well explained, etc. I highly recommend it. (Original) Super personnel, réactif en cas de besoin, gentille, marrant, chaleureux. Mountains
Piton des Neiges, the highest peak in the Indian Ocean, is a dormant shield volcano with extensive hiking trails. Starting from Cilaos, visitors can embark on a challenging trek to reach the summit at 3,071 meters. The picturesque village of Cilaos offers a serene setting surrounded by mountains and charming streets to explore. The journey to Piton des Neiges also includes breathtaking views of lush greenery and cascading waterfalls in the volcanic caldera of Salazie.
Incredible view from up top, takes 3 hours if you go fast from the trail head to which you can take a bus from Cilaos. Climbing to the top is cold until you see the Gite but once you are in the sun, it gets hot again. The experience is truly worth it.

Must-do hike! Count 4 hours of climb for good hikers. Same for the descent if you want to preserve your knees. 3 hours surely for the good descenders! Expect to arrive at least 30 minutes before sunrise. ESSENTIAL: bring warm, dry clothes to watch the sunrise. On our side we had two layers down. 3 layers on top + survival blanket and we got very cold. Provide gloves and hat! Good hike!! If you're looking to use the services of an ethical P.I, I would recommend Mcrae Investigations Agency for all your investigative needs. Pet monitoring devices, kids phone tracking applications, recover lost or stolen data, acquire information for court cases and lots more. See mcraespy at outlook dot com for a free consultation. This sunny day has allowed us to fully experience Reunion, an intense island! The peak is a good place for hikers to see the Grand Bénare, Mafate and Salazie ice craters.

This is great peak with beautiful landscapes and view🙂 The trail is hard and long with more elevation. First part is with steps 1000m elevation to the refuge. Second part is with mountain trail. We begining climb on the 12:00 in the night. And on 6:00 in the morning arrive in the refuge for sunrise. With little slow tempo without rest. First plan was to going for the sunrise on the peak. The trial its not very hard, becouse its hot. I think if you going on the day, is very hot.
Nik B — Google review
Great hike with an amazing view. The hike is much more easier than some describe. The official time for the hike from the parking lot is 7h. We went during night so we would be there at sunrise. It took us 3,5h up and 2h down (We are not pro hikers, but we had quite a fast pace). It's really cold up there though (3°C) with a strong wind. We came too early, the sun rises just 3min before it rises down on the coast, but it was worth the waiting.
Tomáš Š — Google review
Excellent climb. Very good path. Even though it is better to climb up afternoon and have rest at the gite till 3-00 morning, so you can reach the peak on sunrise. Please, note it is very cold at the top, better to have warm and windproof cloth. Descending is more easy at the morning, since most of the time mornings are dry.
Volodymyr R — Google review
Hiking Piton des Neiges is hard, painful and tiring. True life experience where you struggle hard to reach your goals. Its not the destination thats important but the journey to reach it! Watch the amazing sunrise from tip of the mountain, enjoy the breath-taking 360 view of the island! Worth the effort! Gain with Pain :)
Akki S — Google review
A Beauty and A Beast of a Mountain. Biggest in the Indian Ocean and you really have to discover your deep roar to get it done. The walk up is epic, starting after breakfast and a good night's sleep, remember sun lotion and hat. Set off from 'the bloc', a few miles by car from the Cilaos Town. It's such a fresh and beautiful place, quietly filled with climbers and locals waving at each other, Ciloas is a safe relaxed town, 2 hours drive from Saint Denis. The Mighty Piton Des Neiges Mountain was done in 8 hours total, walking steadily, relaxed and balanced, with time to chill with the cat at the mountain hut, 3 quarters of the way up. The path is well marked, yet one must not day dream for too long. There are enough water stops, and people to say Halo Bonjour to, as we acknowledged each other passing by amongst the clouds and sunshine.

So disappointing finding out (from locals) that the rock has been removed to create a little stand up point of view for the landscape. The story of this rock 🪨 is touching so many women 🫶🏻 Anyway the view on Cilaos was incredible! And you can read a bit of Cilaos’ slavery history, how rich people were transported through the narrows roards, how the slaves were escaping… interesting!

We went for a long trail and honestly we needed a solid lunch. And this restaurant came to use - maybe the contrary - we chose a buffet to taste several dishes. Food is good, service is quick and we recommend to book.

Great food and buffet at affordable prices! The buffet was €17 which is cheaper than other restaurants around and included 5 wonderful traditional dishes. Moreover, their ice creams were awesome, specially their vanilla flavour! Highly recommended💯

The service is ok. However, the food is very blend and not representing the creole cuisine well. My partner and I had both stomach problems after the visit. I would not recommend.
Carl B — Google review
Food excellent...lentils cilaos the best ever i ate with meat and tje grilled one also was good
Sonam B — Google review
Cheap quality food charged with horrendous prices. I ordered a tomato salad for ca. 5€ (that turned out to be a single tomato cut into thick slices) and a tuna steak for ca. 20€ (that contained big lumps of fat and looked suspiciously similar to the one that they sell in the frozen section in supermarket). I was especially disgusted by the fish. I ended up giving it to the street cats that were lingering around on the terrace. This place is a tourist trap and a total rip off!

The staff at Le Cass' Dale is extremely pleasant, and they offer delicious meals at a reasonable cost. The view from the restaurant is exceptional, and there are umbrellas available for outdoor dining. The food portions are generous and of high quality for the price. La Chapelle is a popular hiking destination located at the edge of town, offering a moderate 8km trail that takes around 5 hours to complete. The route features surprises such as a canyon with water and a famous spot beneath two boulders that form the chapel. Hikers can expect to encounter rocks, a waterfall stream, and the opportunity to explore a cave with approximately 120cm deep water inside. Additionally, there are breathtaking views and opportunities for swimming near the actual waterfall.
Beautiful hike and impressive canyon. The water is quite cold. You will get wet so bring shoes for walking in the water.

John P — Google review
A great and not really hard hike (against other recommendations I would say you don’t have to go through the water). There will be other hikers but definitely a place to go to.
Micha H — Google review
Breathtaking place worthwhile the hike. Not difficult at all, at least not now, mid-october. The water level is fairly low, apart for getting into the Chapelle there is no need for getting into the water. Bring your sticks with you, they will be useful for crossing river sides from time to time. Enjoy the scenery! :)
Gabriel ( — Google review
Great hike full of surprises. At the end there are a lot of rocks go through including the waterfall stream. It's possible to make it without getting wet to the cave. However, if you wanna go further inside the cave you have to cross approx. 120cm deep water, depending on the stream height. Later you can swim to the actual waterfall. Although, the stream is strong and extremely cold, approx. 10°C during our visit (July).

Wonderful place but not easy to access. The last 100m need to be climbed over big rocks. River need to be crossed.

Visitors can trek to the summit of Grand Bénare, a volcanic mountain standing at an elevation of 2,896 meters. The peak provides breathtaking panoramic vistas and offers clear views of Piton des Neiges and its smaller counterpart, Piton des Neiges. Formerly a prominent resort town since the late 19th century, Cilaos is situated on a plateau at an altitude of 1200 meters. This picturesque town is known for its operational thermal springs (advance booking required).
Amazing view, great trail, very beautiful... Its looking close for trail from Maido, but its real 3 hours walking. Its more and more easy compare to Piton des Neiges and if you want easy trail to the one of the highest peak I recommend. Piton des Neiges is opposite of Grand Benare. All two peak is very beautiful.

A must when visiting La Réunion. Amazing views all along the hike into Mafate. People say that it’s easy because the elevation gain is gradual, but I found it exhausting. Although, we started at 1800 meters, making the hike 1000 meters elevation gain. We took the sentier du grand bord along the cliff edge and then the chemin de la glacière on the way back. Get to the summit before 9:30 or 10am.

Bras Rouge Waterfall

4.6
(163)
Bras Rouge Waterfall is a popular destination for hikers and adventure seekers in Cilaos. The hike to the waterfall offers undulating terrain, making it a bit more challenging but rewarding with the beautiful waterfall as the ultimate prize. The area is known for its gorges, waterfalls, and rivers, providing opportunities for canyoning. Visitors can enjoy the picturesque small waterfall and river, accessible via different routes of varying durations.
Nice hike to get there and rewarded with a great place to cool down with river water. Visit the observation place first to take photos of the waterfall.

Unlike Roche Merveilleuse (basically just a viewpoint) this waterfall is located in a hiking area. If you only have a short time in Cilaos this tour is well worth it. The trails are not crowded and are suitable for everyone. You can leave your car right at the trailhead and depending on your pace the tour will take a maximum of two hours.

(Translated by Google) A very pretty hike from Cilaos. Allow 2.5 hours round trip, including photo breaks. The trail is quite steep. There are pretty pools near the old thermal baths. In July, the waterfall has little water flow. (Original) Très jolie randonnée depuis Cilaos. Compter 2h30 AR avec les pauses photos. Sentier assez raide. Jolis bassins près des anciennes thermes. (Translated by Google) Very nice hike and very beautiful waterfall. Allow 3 hours for a round trip from the old thermal baths to the belvedere, walking leisurely. We had a picnic downstairs, very pleasant and cool. Be careful with certain dizzying passages, watch carefully where you step, a bad fall can be serious here. (We did it with children aged 4, 9 and 12 who were walking and 6 months old in a baby carrier).

We're not particularly athletic, and it took us 1 hour there and 1 hour 10 minutes back. ⚠️ However, at times the path is very narrow and there's a complete void. I was careless for a moment while taking photos and almost fell into the void, so be very careful 😉 (Original) Magnifique panorama. Le Maïdo offers a breathtaking experience, especially in the morning before 10 a.m. to witness the formation of clouds around this time. The drive takes about 50 minutes and features numerous hairpin bends. It provides a spectacular view of the Mafate cirque with isolated islets and a stunning ocean view. Many visitors camp there to catch the sunrise, which reveals changing colors in the sky.

Mafate

Elevated
Mafate is a captivating caldera formed by a volcanic collapse, and it can only be reached by hiking or helicopter as there are no roads leading to it. Reunion Island offers over 1000 kilometers of hiking trails suitable for various levels of hikers. One recommended route is the footpath between Hell-Bourg and the Belouve plateau, which provides stunning views of the Salazie cirque and Piton des Neiges.
Probably our favourite cirque because: 1. the road is the least nightmarish of the three 2. the lookout point (Le Maido) is spectacular, and one actually get a feeling of the scope and vastness of a cirque 3. you can clearly see the highest peak of Reunion from here. 4. you can grab a bite to eat or a cold one at the on site shop.
Mel K — Google review
Réunion is my personal Garden of Eden. Among the countless highlights of the island one stands out even more: the Mafate valley basin. Given some luck with the weather you can spend countless hours or even several days completely away from civilization. The only minor disruption is the occasional helicopter flight. Otherwise in certain areas and at certain times you literally encounter no one. When you do come across human settlements, especially La Nouvelle, they appear almost like a Fata Morgana. The standard routes from Col de Boeuf to Marla to La Nouvelle (to be completed within 7 to 8 hours) are technically not difficult and the paths are never exposed. Some fitness helps, but it’s pure enjoyment hiking! Start as early as possible even in the “dry season” as the first significant clouds start forming around 10 a.m.

Snack Chez Maillot Sentier La Chapelle is a charming creole restaurant where customers are made to feel at home. Instead of a traditional menu, the dishes offered vary based on the daily arrivals. The warm welcome and cozy terrace create a friendly and peaceful atmosphere. While the meals may be simple, they are incredibly satisfying and delicious. As an added treat, diners can enjoy homemade rum after their meal while engaging in interesting conversations with the owner.
This is not a restaurant vibe but it feels like you are going for dinner to your family. Super cool!! the couple running the restaurant is super friendly and they treat you like you are family.
