Scenic Railroads
Nestled in a picturesque valley, Walhalla is a meticulously preserved goldmining town with a rich history. The area was once heavily deforested by mining companies, but now offers lush greenery and intriguing remnants of its past. A must-see attraction is the Walhalla Goldfields Railway, which dates back to 1910 and was revived in 2002 after years of disuse. Visitors can embark on this historic train journey through the stunning landscape.
Loved this beautiful little village! Put Walhalla on your bucket list! We did a day trip, luckily we went on a Wednesday, we caught the train for a 1 hour trip. The station is just before Walhulla. From there, we went into the village and had lunch at the Whitch Cafe, so lovely and cosy. Great coffee and toasties. Pub was far too busy. The pub in the village is closed but the other pub is on your way into the village. Lovely walk on the walking track up the hill and around, looking down on the village, exiting at the Gold Mine. Easy walk about 15 minutes. Beautiful B&B's available. The hole village is so clean and neat. The trees just started to change into their 🍂 🍂 leaves. (March) Population of 20! Unbelievable!!

A lovely way to spend a Sunday. It's a scenic drive to Walhalla and a step back in time exploring the historical gold mining town. The train ride was enjoyable. Get the best views from the right- hand side of the train. Be sure to be on time - it fills up quickly, and book tickets beforehand online.
Najiba S — Google review
We spent the Easter break at Walhalla with friends and family, and the Goldfields Railway ride was the highlight of our trip. The vintage train, stunning views through the valley, and charming trestle bridges made it feel like a journey back in time. The volunteers were so welcoming and knowledgeable—it really added to the experience. To avoid disappointment, I recommend booking tickets in advance, especially during holidays. And while you're there, don’t miss the Walhalla mine tour—it’s fascinating! We also enjoyed a relaxing picnic at North Park Garden, a beautiful and peaceful spot just perfect for unwinding. A wonderful day out for all ages—highly recommend it!
Neha T — Google review
Absolute ripper of a day out, picturesque historical gold mining town with plenty of charm to walk around whilst waiting for the next train. Super friendly and an amazing bunch of volunteers who keep this running for us to enjoy. Pay the smidge extra and ride up the front with the driver, will not be disappointed. Will definitely be back in the warmer months
Geoff — Google review
Absolutely loved this charming little village! We did a day trip and were lucky to visit on a Wednesday—light rain and cool weather made it even more enjoyable. Took the train for a scenic one-hour round trip—be sure to sit on the right side for the best views! The walking track up the hill and around was lovely and peaceful. And can you believe it? The population is just 20—unreal!
SYED A — Google review
It was a beautiful train ride, equivally enjoyable for the kids and adults. Its a scenic drive but unfortunatly on one side of the train ( Departure Left/ Arrival Right). The management for this venue needs to be more considerate as people pay for the sceneic drive , not to sit on chairs and see rocks on othe side when scenic deive is on other way. There is a need to have a seat reservation system so that either on the deprature or arrival one get to see the scenenic side. The train is quite old and had mechanical failure which caused quite some discruptions making our 3:50 train depart at 4:30+. There was a young teenage boy among the management quite rude in the way of talking and always bothering kids. Recommend online booking of tickets as it may get sold out on the long weekends ( we went for easter break)
Anish G — Google review
Great scenic train ride with lots of local history. A well run railway mainly by local volunteers. Plenty of history to explore in Walhalla too.

Pub
Nestled in the picturesque valley, the Walhalla Lodge Hotel & Pub, affectionately known as The Wally Pub, is a must-visit for anyone exploring this charming area. With its inviting verandah and cozy beer garden that welcomes friendly dogs, it’s an ideal spot to unwind while savoring delicious pub grub. The menu may vary daily due to the remote location, but you can expect hearty Aussie classics served in generous portions.
Great stop to soak up the atmosphere in this old gold town. Very friendly service hearty food cold beer on tap… tourist prices of course. Fire was going warm and bright lots to look at as it has eclectic decor and photos all over the walls in the small bar showing the old pubs and town history.
Vicki P — Google review
The Wally Pub was the only place open in Walhalla on Thursday except for the Corner Store. Beautiful, remote historic little town. As the only place to eat, the pub was very nearly full, but the meals coming out of the kitchen were really generous, and looked great. We opted for two of the Nachos Parma, a great slab of crumbed chicken, spiced tomato sauce, corn chips, sour cream and avocado, and a nice salad. Delicious. Wood fire inside, and also tables outside in the sun. Really quaint little pub, and it is a little pub. Enjoyed our lunch. The Corner Store, a pleasant walk uptown, has knick-knacks, and local merch. Very quiet here mid-week which is fine and the pub is gold when you’ve been driving and arrive hungry…recommended.
Martin G — Google review
We definitely underestimated this place! First off, this place was doing a roaring business and if visiting in Walhalla, keep in mind it's the main place to eat at. Lots of Parma options - some odd ones too. They are huge portions and you leave happily full. I ordered the pork sausages and I highly recommend them. They unfortunately ran out of mash but gave chips and veg instead. A little bit on the pricey side, most meals being about $35 but like I said, very generous servings.
Natasha C — Google review
I think we’ve found Parma Heaven!! We both said they were the best Parmas we’ve had. I can highly recommend the Burger Parma for a meat treat. Terrific food and fantastic service. Plenty of outside room for us and the dog.

A communication issue turned into quite the problem. A self admitted new staff member approached our table, asking if my partner would like the rest of her sausages, mash and veggies in a takeaway container. My partner said yes. Her half full plate of food, including an entire sausage and all the veggies and mash that were served was taken away. When the staff member returned, we were only given a sausage in a plastic bag. We explained that we wanted the rest of the meal in a takeaway box and the staff member apologised and said it had already been thrown away. Unfortunate but the new staff member took responsibility. It was then after I went to the bar to ask for some sort of refund for the almost entire meal that was thrown away, an older lady (seemingly a manager) approached my partner at our table and began to explain to her that there is nothing that they can do and that it was my partners fault that the food was thrown out. When we went to further explain the issue, we were interrupted and spoken to quite rudely. This is what has prompted such a scathing review. If staff could please contact me regarding this situation, it would be greatly appreciated. P.S. the young girl at the bar was lovely and very helpful😁

History Museums
The Old Walhalla Post Office Museum, constructed in 1886 and one of the few buildings to survive a devastating fire in 1888, has been meticulously restored to its original state. The interior features significant wallpapers and includes the main post and telegraph office rooms as well as an attached residence for the postmaster. Visitors can take a leisurely walk starting near the Post Office, following the tram track to the Goldmine entrance or continuing on to the campgrounds before returning along the road.
An unforgettable experience and an absolute must for the lovers of history! You think of your more touristy ‘gold rush towns’ around Victoria and the experiences on offer. This is the REAL deal. A real place, an amazing story, a space hardly changed from days long gone. I just sat in that sitting room for half an hour overwhelmed with what must have happened in this place. GO - to know what I’m talking about. Walhalla is a gem. The Old Walhalla Post Office Museum is a must. The only negative - they only take cash for donations and purchases! I wanted to make a donation… please get a tap and pay!

Myst visit if you're around. Takes you back 100 years ago, everything is so genuine and touching. The person that looks after the place is very friendly and has great recommendations if you're visiting the area. It's very important to preserve history like that, and this is a formidable way of doing it. All the best

Amazing how well the postoffice and dwelling connected to it have been preserved! The tourguide from the Long Tunnel Extender tour drove down to let us in and told us more about the history and preservation of the postoffice. Books and cds were for sale inside.

Its an underrated comment "Old is Gold". It's perfectly placed in a small, cute town of Walhalla. This is a must visit place during Autumn 🍁 season. You will definitely regret if you miss the vibrant autumn shades from this town. This town enlighten us with " how to live the life clutter free". The ecosystem is perfectly placed.

Terrific spot to visit and learn about local history and the story of the gold rush. Bob was running the show when we visited and has an obvious love for Walhalla. He loved telling our ten-year-old all about the days and showing him how to do Morse code.

This post office in old Walhalla village is a fascinating view into what a gold rush era post office would have looked like. It is staffed by volunteers, and Ben was very helpful in showing us around. The rooms were complete with antique clothing and furniture from the era, and was described to me as a "photographer's dream". I highly recommend a visit if you're in the area

Walhalla Mechanics Institute

Event venue
Historical landmark
Walhalla Mechanics' Institute has a rich educational history, serving as the first free library in 1867 and hosting a private school. It provided education to working-class men, leading to increased wages. Located in the picturesque town of Walhalla, it offers an authentic historic experience away from touristy attractions. The town's Victorian gold mining charm has even been featured in films. Visitors can enjoy bagpipe performances and explore its beauty, but should be cautious around the cursed grave.
I had my wedding here and it was beautiful! My husband and I were so happy with the price, space, and freedom we were given. Everyone involved was polite and professional and did their best to help us with our special day.

If you have never been to Walhalla, You have missed visiting the most picturesque and fascinating town in Victoria. A few kilometres of winding road keeps the tour buses away, thank goodness. It's a real, living historic town, and nothing like a "pretend historic tourist attraction" (ie. Sovereign Hill, Ballarat). And only a little further away from the centre if Melbourne.

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Walhalla, Wild Cherry Bed & Breakfast offers a delightful escape for couples seeking both relaxation and adventure. Just a short five-minute stroll from the town center, this charming B&B boasts stunning views that will leave you breathless—especially at night when the sky reveals celestial wonders like the Southern Cross and Jupiter. The inviting atmosphere is complemented by an air-conditioned dining room where guests can enjoy hearty breakfasts while watching Kookaburras gather outside.
A lovely place to stay. With the best view in town from the great little deck out the front. Richard and Janette are fantastic hosts, bubbly & friendly. The Walhalla cabin was delightful and very well appointed with all the comforts of home. A brilliant warm shower came in handy on the colder wetter days. After feeding the native birds including a cheeky Kookaburra or two. The breakfasts were amazing, perfect poached eggs and fantastic pancakes. Richard and Janette had all the local knowledge for things to do and places to see. We’ll definitely be back.
Troy H — Google review
We had a wonderful two day stay at Wild Cherry B&B. Our hosts Richard and Janette are very knowledgeable on Walhalla and are quick to help you plan your days. Nothing was too much trouble. The breakfasts are superb. We would definitely recommend a stay here.
Kym G — Google review
It was a great experience staying at Wild Cherry B&B. The view was the best, here you don't have to look up to see birds, you should look down! It's got the best view over beautiful Walhalla. The sky at night is amazing too! We could see the southern cross and Jupiter here! The best part was the friendly hosts! It was great meeting Richard and we enjoyed his hospitality and great stories he shared with us. In morning you'll see lots of Kookaburras lining up for breakfast and you can feed them too. Few things to remember: . There is no mobile network coverage here . It's on top of a hill and the track to go down is quite a steep one. . No fuel in Walhalla and surrounding areas Overall, an amazing experience!
Hooman — Google review
Lovely location overlooking the Walhalla township with a walking trail literally across the road. You'll be served a delicious and hearty breakfast in the morning accompanied by the best view in town. Richard and Janet are very knowledgeable of the extended local area and are lovely to have a chat with but will also respect your privacy. Be aware the two rooms available share a common wall which is usually fine but you might hear the neighbouring rooms tv if they have the volume up. Overall a clean, cosy room with a pair of great hosts and a great base to explore Walhalla from.
Tim R — Google review
Walhalla Wild Cherry accommodation has many positives, main points being the Wild Cherry hosts Richard & Janette Henry are lovely people providing us with their outstanding hospitality. The accommodation was extremely clean, modern and very comfortable. The accommodation is self contained with bathroom and shower facilities and has both air conditioning and heating if required and a bar fridge with tea & coffee making facilities and vehicle parking at your front door. A lovely home cooked breakfast is provided by the hosts in the dinning room or can be taken out on the balcony which provides you with a magnificent view.

The Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine in Walhalla offers guided tours that take visitors deep into the underground workings of the historic mine. With a rich history dating back to the gold rush era, this 8.5km mine eventually became one of the most productive in the area, yielding over 13,695kg of gold.

We had a wonderful experience at this Gold mine our tour guide Karen was wonderful, allowed us time to take photos and have a good look around, bubbly personality and great communication with our grandson. Great history being remembered and told to next generations.

We went on the Walhalla Gold Mine tour today, and our tour guide was Hayley. We had a great time and learnt so much about how times were tough mining in the early days. Hayley was a wealth of knowledge and made the tour fun, my grandson even found gold lol. We came home and Googled more on the history of Walhalla, this little town has so much heritage and history, it's well worth the the trip. Next time we are doing the ghost tour and the Walhalla train 🚂. Thank you Hayley for an amazing day.

Huge thanks to Richard for being our guide, your humour and knowledge made it such a memorable experience. The tunnel itself is super impressive and quite possibly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see something like it. So don’t miss this off your Walhalla itinerary! Also, a big thank you to the lovely lady at the front desk, and to Richard again - thanks for the laughs (and for having a laugh with me). I am still wondering though… is that your brother? 😛😅

We had a lovely time thanks to Ben! Too bad we couldn't find a gold nugget! Unfortunately, most of the town was closed on the Monday we visited. Also, do top up your petrol to a full tank before you come up as the windy road takes up more gas than you'd think. The nearest petrol station is in Moe and the rate is quite high.

had a great time going through this tour ..the guide is very informative and there is a fair bit to see unlike a lot of mines that are basicly tunnels .....mine is unique because they had boilers set up inside the mine and that room is still visible minus boilers of course ..definitely worth a visit and the amazing town of Valhalla is worth it just to see that

This is an absolute must do tour if you are ever in town for a visit!! To really learn and understand Walhalla’s history with both the mine its self and the town ship, go give it a go!! Our tour guide Karen was amazing!!! She was a local who not only knew her stuff but has so much passion for the place she lives in. Karen was a great, bubbly person, great with the kids, down to earth and had so much knowledge about what she was talking about. Highly recommend going on one of her tours if you can.

Campground
Nestled at the northern end of Walhalla township, the Walhalla North Gardens offers a delightful camping experience that stands out in today's world of overpriced campgrounds. This serene spot features free first-come, first-served sites, making it an ideal choice for spontaneous adventurers. Campers can enjoy complimentary BBQ facilities and clean flushing toilets, with ample bins to keep the area tidy. The picturesque location along a babbling creek adds to its charm, providing a peaceful backdrop for relaxation.
Water, toilets, 2 bbqs, 5 fire pits and green lawn to camp Walking distance to everything in Walhalla. I didn't use the car all weekend. Beautiful scenery and ambiance with the river trickling beside you. Can't ask for more from a free camp ground.

Great spot for a free camp along the creek! Clean toilet facilities, shelters, dog friendly and plenty of room for tents and swags along with room for about 20 or so cars/vans plus a couple of caravans. In an era where most campgrounds want top dollar and have horrible services. The Walhalla North Gardens is a breath of fresh air. Free first come first serve sites. Free BBQ facilities, water (non drinking) and clean flushing toilets. Bins a emptied often and are abundant so there is no rubbish around. Just a magnificent location to camp. It is just a pity the town is kind of dead most nights of the week. So come on a weekend.

Went here early September 2023 So on a yolo went out of the road of Walhalla northbound in my Mazda sedan . Somehow ended up in the mountains where it was snowing very lightly but it was amazing , no one was around and seeing snow was magical Some road hazards on the way but a very slow drive with tons of pot holes , freezing cold weather , rain and snow In shocked my tyres didn’t go flying but I think the next town I ended up in was Licola ? Saw like one car in the middle of nowhere Great to see snow for free , I’m too poor to pay to get into the village

There are so many hikes available when not covered in snow, to get here the road is unsealed, 2wd or 4wd os fine. The area is well maintained. Hike in and camp areas available. Make sure you bring plenty of food and drink as nothing is available on site. Toilets are available at the start only (drop). If you're lucky, you'll see lots of animals along your route

Went on a snow hunt and found this place, what a gem of a place. Plenty of snow play area and a few toboggan runs. Walk up to the lookout is only 600m but is tricky with young kids in the snow. If coming up in the snow, bring chains if you don't have a 4x4. Saw a few cars get stuck.

First time up to Mt St Gwinear. What an awesome and stunningly beautiful area. Two great tobogganing slopes for the kids and a 600m walk through to an absolutely gorgeous white wonderland!

The walk to Mushroom rocks is a beautiful one. It can be strenuous and muddy when wet. I wouldn't recommend it for little kids, some older people or those not sure on foot. It's a beautiful walk though and rivals the Grampians with its unique granite boulders and beautiful trees. It's worth the effort for sure.

Sancreed Cottage

Sancreed Cottage is a charming and cozy retreat located in the picturesque village of Walhalla. The classic exterior gives way to a modern, open-plan interior with thoughtful period touches. The hosts, Brian and Joanne, have meticulously restored the cottage, ensuring every detail is perfect for a comfortable stay. Guests appreciate the stunning views from the hilltop location and praise the cleanliness of the cottage.
We stayed in June and can recommend Sancreed Cottage as the must stay place when staying in Walhalla. A beautiful location set up on the hill overlooking the main street in both directions. The cottage is set up perfectly for a long or short stay and is so comfortable. We'll be back to Walhalla in a different season to experience this incredible town again and will definitely be booking at Sancreed

Stayed at Sancreed Cottage over ANZAC weekend 2025. Second stay at Sancreed, won’t be the last. A real retreat and unique experience. Walhalla town is an adventure of stepping back in time to a bygone era and Sancreed offers all the luxury of modern living without the noise. The host Brian is brilliant for local knowledge and provides an excellent accommodation in the best location, central Walhalla. Attending the town ANZAC dawn service and gunfire breakfast was a truly unmatched ceremony. Unmatched in community spirit, the atmosphere and decor is unlike any other. The towns link to the Great War is also fascinating and historically interesting.

Sancreed is a beautiful and comfortable cottage with fantastic views down the valley of the lovely village of Walhalla. It’s a classic miner’s home on the outside and open-plan modern on the inside, with period touches. Brian and Joanne have done a great job and have thought of everything, even down to a box of emergency food supplies. And it has to be the cleanest house we’ve stayed in. We had a lovely few days and will definitely return

Old Wahalla Fire Station Museum

4.4
(11)
Museum
Nestled in the picturesque town of Walhalla, the Old Walhalla Fire Station Museum is a fascinating piece of history that dates back to 1901. Established after a devastating fire ravaged the town in 1888, this unique fire station stands out as it is ingeniously built over a creek, making it more akin to a bridge than a traditional firehouse.
The only Fire Station I know of in Australia that is built over a stream. It's more of a Bridge than a Fire Station, but that's what happens in a valley with no space. This has to be one of my favourite quirky buildings in all of Victoria. Well worth a visit.

Bed & breakfast
Windsor House B & B offers a serene getaway in one of Walhalla's most iconic buildings, making it the perfect retreat for those looking to unwind. Guests rave about the warm hospitality provided by hosts Gaele and Mark, who go above and beyond to ensure a memorable stay. The accommodations are not only comfortable but also steeped in history, with charming rooms like the Sarah Flower room that overlooks a picturesque garden.
Tranquil stay! We absolutely enjoyed our time at Windsor House – one of the most iconic buildings in Walhalla over the long weekend. Gaele and Mark were very nice and friendly hosts who provided top notch services from excellent accommodation to fantastic breakfast. The place attracts a lot of visitors thanks to its beauty and history. We loved the sound of the creek in front of the house and it was so relaxing. The tour of the house seemed to take us back to the early days of the historic town. Our experience at Windsor House was absolutely a highlight of our trip to Walhalla.

Absolutely stunning and great price! Perfect for a quick trip to the snow, and to get away for a quiet holiday away from the hustle and bustle. Was not expecting walhalla to be so quaint and like a time capsule. So picturesk and cool seeing all the old stuff from when it was a gold mining town! Got table service with a hot breakfast. It’s not just continental! Which was definitely value for money. Loved the French press coffee too. And the butter was delicious! Forgot to ask where it was from! Room was quiet and warm. Only had to share bathroom with 1 other room. Was only a a few mins walk to the pub nearby which was great. There’s also another pub in Erica if u wanted somewhere else to eat. Very thankful the owner warned and reminded us about needing snow chains from Walhalla up to Mount Baw Baw, as there’s coppas ready to fine you on the way! Was so nice and relaxing walking around the town. Only takes around 1 hour to do the full loop, but totally worth it! Just a warning the steel grating on the entrance bridge can be a bit slippery, and my partner fell over in hiking boots and grazed his arm. The owners were lovely about it, and helped us try and find the earphone that fell into the water when he fell. So just a warning to others to be careful when it’s dewy. But saying that, it’s because there is a beautiful creek flowing around the house. There’s also a common room where you can sit in lovely couches and relax next to a fire, or even play games. Only downfall was there was no matches or lighter to start the fire up. Will definitely let others know about this place!

Amazing experience and delicious breakfast! We stayed in the Sarah flower room overlooking the front garden. It felt like we had gone back into time. The bed was super comfy and the pillows plush. The place was very clean. We had an issue with the hot water which was promptly and efficiently attended to. Gale and Mark were such gracious hosts they showed us around the house and gave us a brief history. They recommended us where to eat and activities of interest. Our overall exprience at their B & B made our trip memorable. Thabo & Marcel

Visiting Walhalla is like stepping back in time. You feel like you’re on a movie set and Windsor House is a fantastic place to stay. Impeccably clean and tastefully furnished. The most comfortable bed we’ve slept in during our holiday with premium linen and firm mattress. Gaele and Mark are fantastic hosts and their breakfast was amazing

I want to thank Gale and Mark for a fantastic time. Our time with you in such a beautiful place was made even more special because nothing was left out. From the spectacular house to the attention to every detail. The breakfast was a feast for kings and queens and that is the feeling you gave us. Like we were royalty. Which we are not. Then the tour of the cellar today was fantastic and we really really loved our time there. Thank you so much and would recommend staying here Thanks for the fire last night Jason n I had a cuppa in front of it before bed. I would give this ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Five hearts. Loved every moment.

A gift for my parents (NZ) - we were left disappointed. While my parents have no mobility issues, a standard staircase was expected and not the steep one experienced. Saying that 95 year old's and the owner herself uses those stairs dozens of times a day didn’t acknowledge individual concerns at all. It would have been good if the website advised that there is no tv and wifi as these are normally standard inclusions when booking accommodation. The room was also covered in dust due to the renovations that were taking place. While the owner apologised for not cleaning the dust on the chairs and said that she would fix it while they waited, for the amount that we paid for the room, I expected that the room would have been ready for their arrival and that they would not have to wait for it to be cleaned. It would have been good if the owner had also communicated the fact that booking into the pub for dinner (only place open) before arrival would be a good idea. Because they didn’t, my parents were unable to get any dinner and were not even offered a cup of tea by the owner. The owner also expressed the struggles their business had experienced over the last few years due to rising utilities, insurance costs, bush fires, floods and lockdowns, which I appreciate but when you pay $220 for a gift you hope to get what you pay for. My parents did not end up staying and request for a refund, even partial was rejected. While the owner said that having someone leave was like a slap in the face, not getting what we paid for and the owner being so inflexible about a refund or alternative, was much the same. We were also made to feel at fault with the owner saying perhaps next time more effort into researching your stay might be of benefit. Will not be promoting Windsor House to friends and/or family.

Walhalla's Creek Cottage

4.6
(16)
Self-catering accommodation
Nestled in a perfect location, Walhalla's Creek Cottage is a charming 2-bedroom retreat with the soothing sound of birds and a creek right at its doorstep. The nearby lolly shop and sightings of ducks in the creek delighted the kids. The well-equipped cottage offers a cozy and warm atmosphere, with clean and spacious interiors. Guests enjoyed the amazing shower pressure and encounters with beautiful birds on the verandah, as well as deer across the creek.
A quaint little cottage right in the middle of town. Nothing fancy but everything you need and close to all the local attractions, it was great for us in the summer time being able to sit out in the yard and enjoy the weather or a short walk to one of the nearby swimming spots but I think it would be just as lovely in the winter tucked up in doors with a drink and enjoying the scenery through the windows.
Alice — Google review
My husband and I booked the Creek Cottage for the nights before and of our wedding, Astrid was lovely, and her team did an amazing job to be sure we were well taken care of. There was a power outage the first night, which is a regular occurrence for Walhalla, and couldn't have been foreseen, but it didn't spoil our night by any means. There was also a bit of food left in the oven from previous occupants, which I threw out, but mistakes happen. All in all, it was a delightful stay.

What a gorgeous little cottage! Super cosy, warm and great location and views. Bed was comfy but the shower was amazing! The pressure from the water was sensational. Cottage was clean and spacious. Had beautiful birds on the verandah and even deer just across the creek which scared my partner with an almighty loud HONK! Haha. Astrid was great to deal with and we had an amazing 2 nights. Will definitely be back again!

A beautiful 2 bedroom cottage in the perfect location. All you can here when you open the door is the birds and the creek, which runs right infront of the cottage. There were lots of ducks in the creek that the kids loved seeing every morning and evening. Located behind the lolly shop which the kids loved. Only stores in town are lolly shop, cafe, pub and post office so we took groceries and filled up petrol in Warragul. Cottage was well equipped to cook our own lunch/ dinner. Across the road is stringers park which has access to the creek and a small playground. 1 bathroom with shower in the bathtub. But the bathtub was handy for the kids. Queen bed in one, and 2 single bed in the other room. We had space to set up the portacot too. Overall a great place to stay while in town.

Cemetery
Sights & Landmarks
Walhalla Cemetery is a unique and historic site located in Australia, established during the colonial gold rush era. The cemetery offers a remarkable view of the surrounding area and features unusual graves with wooden markers. While not creepy during the day, it is known for conducting ghost tours at night. The cemetery's terraced layout on a hillside makes it an interesting visit, although access may be challenging for those with mobility issues.
One of the more interesting cemeteries that you can come across. Not being a country with a log. History, every little bit counts. This cemetery is a place where you get a real understanding of what life was like many many years ago. The walk from the carpark is fairly easy but not wheelchair accessible. Set on the side of the hill, there is a nice resting place on the way up and st the cemetery. Do read some of the tombstones as they are interesting. Five girls lost to one family in a short period of time. Well worth a visit.
Debi S — Google review
Great experience. Very emotive. Some of the headstones are huge and as others have said, multiple family members on them, young children mostly. Became teary reading some of them saying “native to Cornwall” or “native to Ireland”. They are so far from their ‘home’. The track can be a bit narrow and wobbly at times but manageable. Need a good hour if you’re going to try and read them all. The track up to it is an incline we were there in 5 mins even though the sign said it was a 20 min walk
Alexandra H — Google review
Interesting cemetery to see. Plenty of history. Not well maintained, but probably due to the location of the cemetery. A couple of seats available. Well worth a wonder through here to have a look.
Christine B — Google review
This was such a serene, peaceful location. Had an eerie vibe, but if you like that sort of experience , definitely worth a visit! Unique place for a cemetery and not well kept (but that adds to the historical experience) and enough pathway to be comfortable to walk through and experience the memories of the past.
Sandra — Google review
Take your camera and wander through this space. Great walk up to the cemetery also.
Jo M — Google review
One of the coolest cemeteries I have ever been to. I loved it. So pretty and quaint, and so many stories and lives under each stone. The layers of the hill make it so much more interesting. 100% recommend to go. It is up a little bit of a hill, but keep walking because the view and the adorable cemetery are worth it.
Sophie C — Google review
One of the most unique cemeteries in Australia. Established during the colonial gold rush glory days of the town, it is built into the side of a hill so many graves are above each other in terraces. A must see, a walk up a path up the hill (look out for the sign post gate on the main road below). Unfortunately due to being on a hill, not disabled friendly or elderly friendly unless on the fitter side. No direct vehicle access other than the walking path..

Walhalla makes up for a funfilled daytrip from Melbourne, I'd recommend going in Autumn season, mid April would be ideal I guess. There are some BnB and heritage cottages if you wanted to stay overnight, but you need to book in early, walhalla has a pub a restaurant a cafe and some small essential shops to take care of your needs, photos and videos are not edited so what you see when you go there is what you see here.

This corner store is such a fun and unexpected stop! Deinitely a must see if you're into Halloween and candy. It’s filled with the most eclectic mix of things – from quirky nostalgic candy and witchy treasures to cutesy spooky décor and vintage knick-knacks. They even have a little museum showcasing pieces from Walhalla, which makes it even more fascinating. If you visit during the day, it’s already a delight – but stopping by at night as part of the Ghost Tour (fun little tour with the proceeds going back into supporting the town) lets you see it in a completely different light. It feels whimsical, charming, and just a little bit magical after dark. The lady working there was so kind and welcoming, and we loved how the shop supports local artists. Prices were very reasonable too, especially considering how unique everything is. Even if you could find the product online, we found it was cheaper at the store and it'll be linked to your memory of Walhalla. She even gave us a free Tote bag with our purchase which she really didn't have to. It’s definitely the kind of place where you’ll want to take your time looking around… though your wallet might not thank you for it!

Horse Shoe Tunnel Bend, constructed in 1912 during the gold rush in Victoria, was designed to redirect water from the gold-rich Thomson River bed. Spanning 220 feet, it stands as one of the longest diversion tunnels of its kind. Legend has it that the builders' family encountered a perilous incident at the inlet but managed to escape unharmed.

Seasonal river
Nestled alongside Main Road, Stringers Creek is steeped in rich history dating back to 1863 when gold was first discovered by Edward Stringer. This discovery sparked a gold rush that transformed the area into a bustling tent city filled with hopeful prospectors. Among them was the Walhalla Gold Mine, managed by Henry Rosales, who drew inspiration from Norse mythology for the town's name.
