Ouro Preto in 4 days

If you only have 4 days to spend in Ouro Preto, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Ouro Preto, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a gorgeous mountain town full of colonial buildings that will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. It’s a city steeped in history and culture, with plenty of natural beauty to match. The cobblestone streets are lined with beautifully preserved Baroque colonial architecture that include palatial mansions, churches and convents, all built during the gold rush of the 18th century.
With favorites like Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Mercês e da Misericórdia, Minas Do Palácio Velho, and Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Bené da Flauta Restaurante e Café and Lanchonete Garapinha so you can get the best taste of Ouro Preto while you’re here. Beautiful church with golden interior. Ouro Preto has a lot of churches but this one is without a doubt the most impressive. You do have to pay to enter but it is definitely worth it.

Amazing historic church with gold. You need to buy ticket to enter not at entrance, at house around 10meter from here. Fee is 10BRL per adult, 5BRL per kids. It is much more worth than fee. If you visit Ouro Preto, you must plan to visit here. By the way, there are hills around there if you go from Tiradentes plaza. It’s better to think time and energy.
Papipupenta — Google review
So much for back breaking sweat and forced labour to produce this masterpiece gold plated art work. And yet the slaves were not allowed to worship here for centuries
Al-Amin M — Google review
A beautiful basilic and full of history and cultural significance. A jewel in the Brazilian Crown that was built on the back of the gold riches and the enslaved African people. But, like anywhere in the world, it's part of its history and should be celebrated taking all into account. History cannot be erased or ignored, it must be studied and absorbed us.

Museu da Inconfidência is a long-standing museum housed in the former municipal headquarters and old jail of Ouro Preto, dating back to 1784-1854. It pays tribute to the victims of the failed Inconfidencia Mineira movement, which sought independence from Portugal in 1789. The museum features exhibits such as Tiradentes' tomb and manuscripts related to the revolt.

Historical place
The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi is an 18th-century Roman Catholic church renowned for its exquisite design and lavishly painted interior. Constructed in 1768 by the celebrated Baroque artist Aleijadinho, it stands as one of Ouro Preto's most iconic architectural landmarks.
Very beautiful place. It's a bit out of the way but I highly recommend visiting if you're in the area. We made the 3 hour drive from Viçosa and only stayed for the day, but the six hours on the road were worth seeing such a magnificent and historic town. The church has a stunning mural on the ceiling. I hope to make it back to visit again one day.
Wayne E — Google review
The Igreja de São Francisco de Assis in Ouro Preto, Brazil, is a Baroque Catholic church with Rococo elements, celebrated as a masterpiece of Aleijadinho, who designed its facade and interior features. It also houses iconic paintings by Mestre Ataíde, such as the famous ceiling of the nave. The church was recognized as a historic site by IPHAN and included among the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Origin in 2009. Constructed by the Ordem Terceira de São Francisco de Assis, its building began in 1765 and progressed under Aleijadinho’s direction, with significant contributions from other artists. Key stages of construction included the chapel-mor (1774), the altar-mor (1790–1794), and later additions like lateral altars (1829–1890). Structural issues necessitated additional work, including side arcades in 1801. The church underwent various restorations, including 20th-century efforts led by IPHAN, ensuring its preservation as part of Ouro Preto's UNESCO World Heritage status.
Ednilson ( — Google review
Beautiful church, it’s one of the most visited in the area, so keep that in mind
Christian P — Google review
A gem of Baroque architecture nestled atop a sloping square, this church is a visual delight—especially for photography enthusiasts. Your lens can’t help but capture the ornate façade, sculpted by Aleijadinho, bathed in sunlight and shadow. What makes the visit even more memorable is the vibrant soapstone handicraft market right in front of the church. Stalls overflowing with local artisanal sculptures offer an authentic touch and a chance to take home a piece of tradition. A perfect pairing of art, history, and local craftsmanship — a must-visit in Ouro Preto.
Sidney B — Google review
Nice to visit, but not the greatest church on earth. Like every other church in Ouro Preto, you have to go pay an entrance fee, either cash or via PIX.
Karl — Google review
Church with a incredible amount of art work. You can spend hours looking at the ceiling, it’s mesmerizing. The altar is also full very fine craftsmanship. On the back you also have a tiny museum of Aleijadinho’s art work during his life
Felipe S — Google review
It is a beautiful church! It was ornated by Aleijadinho! It is very beautiful and intetesting! It really worths a visit! The visit costs 10 reais. There are another church in town to visit for free. Both were ornate by him! This one is more beautiful! Visit both!
Pedro P — Google review
Visit this church, you will NOT be disappointed. It is a testament of the powerful craftsmanship of Aleijadinho, the man who sculpted without his hands. He sculpted the altar while not being able to attend mess on this church, being black and black people where not allowed inside churches. The church also holds the painting of Mestre Ataíde, the painting in the ceiling that is his most well known piece. This church is a powerful expression of Ouro Preto's and Brazil's faith and artistry.

Morro São Sebastião Lookout, located in Ouro Preto, offers breathtaking panoramic views of Tiradentes square and the historical neighborhood of Antonio Dias. The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon. Accessible by a steep street near the Astronomical Observatory, it's recommended to wear comfortable shoes for the climb. While some suggest hiring a local driver or taking a guided tour due to the challenging terrain, others find the view well worth the effort and recommend driving there directly.
Very good view, I think it’s the best place to ove re look the whole town, just you need to climb up the steep slope, and it’s not friendly for people who have leg or knees problem. So if you ‘re healthy and do like exercise, it’s a pretty good experience for cardio 🤓 Do wear comfortable shoes are important 😺

Worthwhile to look around and learn about money and gold. One of their employees showed us around. She was so enthusiastic and showed us every room!

This is the largest and grandest building in town. It's history as a residence and mint is documented.. there are exhibits on coinage and the town's history. There are also spaces to show how the rooms may have looked in original use. The most poignant are the exhibition s in the basement which contain slave paraphernalia.

The architecture is great. It is a museum like no other but I think it should have more digital features to make it more interesting.

Very interesting building (archtectcure and engineering wise), a broad collection of many different "currencies" used through out the years (due to a chronical inflation process that ended in the middle of the 1990's with the inauguration of then Real as Brazilian currency and inflation control)

Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos is one of the many churches in Ouro Preto, each with its own unique history and architectural style. This church, dedicated to the Lady of the Rosary and also honoring Saint Iphigenia, was built between 1733 and 1785 in Antonio Dias. It is said to have been commissioned by Chico Rei, a former slave who became a wealthy mine owner and freed many others.

Bené da Flauta Restaurante e Café is a charming eatery located in an 18th-century colonial mansion in the upscale area of the city, next to the Church of São Francisco de Assis. The restaurant pays homage to a former resident who used to play the flute on the city streets. Guests can enjoy their meals accompanied by classic jazz or MPB tunes while taking in the soothing view.
Its a general problem in Brazil unfortunately, I face it here as well. Neither the waiters speak English nor the menu is in English. It's really hard for the tourists to order. The food is delicious, the environment is nice and clean. I like it so much.

I visited this restaurant in January 2025 with my family for dinner. I have to start by mentioning the amazing service; the staff was extremely attentive and friendly. Despite our table placing a large order for six people, the food came out quickly. The food was delicious! Everything we ordered tasted great, especially the mandioca (yuca). The building where the restaurant is located has remained unchanged for many years, and the servers were kind enough to share its history with us.

Beautiful restaurant. Average food quality and quite bad service. Prices are not justified for the quality. Quite empty for dinner. They serve typical Minas Gerais food ONLY FOR LUNCH! Don’t recommend it!

Do not try this terrible restaurant. I made booking with the girl yesterday for dinner on Sunday evening. She took it without telling us that it was not ooen on Sunday. We waited in the cold air for an hour only to find out it was close on Sunday!

They are famous and popular restaurant at Ouro Preto. So, don’t forget to make reservation. Otherwise, you need to wait with long line. Their atmosphere, staff services, and of course food was very good. Their dishes were individual, just the right amounts. Their price was also attractive range, but amazing quality.

I highly recommend making a reservation (on the restaurants site), to avoid any waiting lines. The food was incredible, but a bit pricey. The staff was kind and did their work well. The place its self is also amazing and the views are spectacular, BUT (as going to any other place in the city) it does require walking as it has very little parking spaces near. TIP: This restaurant is better during the afternoon (has more plate options, and the views are better) Overall, it was a great experience.

The service at Garapinha is excellent; the waiter who served me was super helpful. He said they offer a mini version of the traditional PF (Portuguese for "PF"). Since I don't eat much, I ordered this version, which cost only R$25.00. The flavor of this homemade food is surreal! Remember that on the ground floor you can buy souvenirs from your trip; in my case, I bought cheese and dulce de leche, which were also very reasonably priced. I RECOMMEND IT! There were few meat options; there was only sausage, and then they added some chicken. It wasn't tasty; it was pretty average. I didn't think it was worth it. And the space is pretty cramped. Oh, and they don't serve fresh juices. Since we don't drink soda, we had to order water. (Original) Comida a vontade por um preço fixo (R$43,00, hoje 24/07/2025). Porem a comida é meio sem graça. The place is very cramped, both for serving and eating, and it looks unkempt and dirty. I left smelling of grease, which I hate. I wouldn't go back and I don't recommend it.

Restaurante e Scotch Bar Acaso 85 is a stunning multi-storey restaurant with high ceilings and a beautiful stone wall interior. Located in Lg.do Rosario, it offers a sophisticated dining experience with an exquisite menu. The self-service buffet style allows you to pay by weight, making it a great option for trying local cuisine. The charming courtyard and elaborate decoration add to the overall ambiance of this outstanding restaurant, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors alike.
This restaurant was surprisingly large. After you enter the main door you head down and down into the basement. The place is well decorated and has many interesting places to explore. The lunch buffet was delicious. Strangely this scotch bar had no scotch, at least when we went.

A MUST in the town !! Delicious , cheap , great environment!! Grateful to found it !!

Self service type of place - you pay for the weight. The food was very tasty and not in fair price range - it is a good option for one who doesn't know the local cuisine and wants to try a bit of everything. Place is not very touristic, rather for locals and students. The lady from the kitchen also explained me, what each dish is and how usually people eat it (combine things etc.), tho we spoke in Portuguese (I don't know their English proficiency). Strongly recommend!

West side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the west side side of town. Start the day off with Restaurante Contos de Réis, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Casa Aleijadinho. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Minas Gerais restaurant
Restaurant
Restaurante Contos de Réis is a charming dining spot located in a historic building, offering traditional dishes and homemade desserts. Situated in the rustic charm of Ouro Preto, this restaurant provides a captivating culinary experience that delves into Brazil's rich heritage. The menu features skillfully prepared local specialties such as Local Sausage with Jilo and Braised Beef Ribs served with savory farofa and fried polenta, showcasing the essence of Minas Gerais cuisine.
The history of this place is still palpable as we dine in what was once a slave quarter many years ago. If you pay attention to the low ceiling, the barred windows, the materials used in the building, and the decor featuring ancient and historical artifacts, you'll realize that this establishment offers a unique experience and tells a profound story. The food complements this narrative, as much of the traditional cuisine reflects what the enslaved people could eat and how they prepared their meals to enhance the flavors. Although the history is somber, I found it touching when our server said, "The story may be sad, but we aim to bring something good out of it and ensure everyone remembers so we don't return to dark times." This restaurant is the best for authentic food from Minas. The dishes they prepare are incredibly tasty, and the portions are generous, making it easy to share or take leftovers home. I highly recommend ordering the traditional, authentic dishes!

A great local experience with an authentic charm, fantastic view, wonderful food and great service. I tried the "rabada" and it was fantastic, good portion and nice presentation coupled with a nice local choppe of beer. Cozinha Mineira as it's best.
Guillermo H — Google review
The restaurant has a charming interior with beautiful artisanal decorations, creating a cozy atmosphere. However, the food left much to be desired. The ribs were overly dry and heavily salted, which made the meal less enjoyable.
Nikolay T — Google review
I hate to be that unpopular guy, but I have to be honest, I didn't enjoy my dinner here. The average price is quite pricey, but I suppose the ingredients are probably sourced from miles away. So the costs added up, which I could look past that. I had the empanadinhos with stuffed cheese for the starter and it was incredibly salty. I'm aware that cheese can be salty, but this was just another level. Then I had bacalhau for the main. Despite the price point being among the top dishes, I had my hope so high that it would redeem my experience. Unfortunately, No. This was also incredibly salty, which I assumed it was due to the amount of olives they threw in this tiny dish. Put it this way, the portion of olives was half of the dish, whilst the other half was bacalhau & potatoes! I have no issues with olives, in fact I like them! But for this dish it was a fail. Let's hope that I was just unlucky. Let's assume that maybe these 2 dishes were never popular.

Great food accompanied by friendly service. Our frango com quiabo (chicken with okra) was delicious. For dessert, we followed the server’s recommendation and tried the cheese ice-cream served with warm goiaba (guava) syrup. It was the perfect finale of our meal. The restaurant is situated in a former senzala, a historical slave quarter from colonial Brazil. The added layer of significance gave the experience an extra depth.

Exploring the Centro Histórico of Ouro Preto is akin to stepping back in time to the late 1700s and early 1800s, a period rich in Portuguese colonial history. This charming old town features cobblestone streets, stunning baroque churches, and beautifully preserved mansions that reflect its cultural heritage. A walking tour here can be moderately challenging due to elevation changes and uneven paths but offers an immersive experience near key attractions, including seven magnificent churches.
I visited here many years ago. It is a really nice town not far from Belo Horizonte. Many nice places to see - the churches, restaurants, school of mines, and other historical sites. I really enjoyed the visit.

It offers visitors an underground adventure through its galleries and halls on a trolley once used by miners. The mine was owned by Chico Rei, a former slave who became king. Visitors can explore the deep shafts of the mine and even wade through an underground lake at Passagem Mines of 1719 for a thrilling experience.
It was incredible and we learned so much. All tourists interested in history, anthropology, and black excellence should visit.

A wet mine located in Ouro Preto. Honestly speaking it is not very big, but the guide (who spoke only Portuguese and a little bit of English) was able to explain what was going on. Be prepared for a little bit of climbing. There was even a small waterfall inside the mine. It was okay, good for about a half hour visit.
Chin H — Google review
Official ticket price 70. When he sees your shocked face it goes to 50 for cash. You decide not to go and look at what's next to see in your mobile, then he goes "half price if it's only you". Hard put off. I didn't go.
Vladimir P — Google review
Very interesting, we participated the twenty minutes tour. The guide speaks English, and he’s very funny. We got to know the history of Chico Rei and everything. The mine tour experience itself is amazing, it’s a blend of exploration, history and knowledge. Highly recommended.
Duoyuan G — Google review
It would have been excellent to go inside but compared to other attractions in the town, the entrance price was ridiculous at R$70 per person
Matt F — Google review
Our visit was okay. We got to walk down two mine corridors, the second being rather challenging. The guide’s English was not exceptional; often we understood his Spanish better. We got good stories about the miners and the types of stones and other materials found here, but missed their subtleties.
Hans — Google review
Nice mine, interesting stop inside, it's not possible to go really really deep but sufficiently for a good experience. The guide I had spoke Spanish/ Portuguese only but was very friendly and funny. And free cachaca for the ticket, 60 Reis.
Ludovic — Google review
Very interesting tour of a former goldmine. Lasts about 20mins. Bigger guys need to crouch down quite a bit, but it's worth it. The history of the mine and the slaves working there are brought to life very vividly by the guide. Tours are available in Portuguese, Spanish and English. At the time of writing it cost 50 R$ / person.

Mines
Minas do Palácio Velho stands as a testament to the rich and often somber history of gold mining in Minas Gerais, particularly during the 18th century. Nestled at the foot of Tapanhuacanga Hill, this site offers visitors a glimpse into the original techniques used for gold extraction in Ouro Preto. Unlike more adventurous mines, this location emphasizes its historical significance.
It was a lot of fun to learn the history of how they mined gold. The tour guided was full of knowledge
Ted A — Google review
Massively overpriced. The guide was good and informative but the tour is really brief. A couple of small caves. Really disappointing given the cost.

The medieval mining methods here are exceptional. The rock beddings and striations are followed closely in chiselling.

Not much explanation provided in the mine about its operation.

This mine is less of a "adventurous" one and a more "historical" one. The guides are well educated in the history of enslavement in Brazil and, specially, in the mining industry at the time in Ouro Preto. We can walk around the mines with in deep explanation of how the mining process was, how the slaves worked and what each part of the mine was there for. I was very impressed about some of the information given. I recommend this mine especially for those with kids who are more interested in history and don't want to walk on tight spots and tunnels.

Paróquia e Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Conceição - Ouro Preto/MG

Catholic church
The Paróquia e Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Ouro Preto, MG is a must-visit for its stunning architecture from the Baroque period. Situated between Praca Barao de Queluz and Praca Antonio Dias, this church stands out as one of the country's finest architectural gems.
Very impressive and unusual Baroque church, showcasing different phases of the style in Brazil. It originated as a chapel in 1699, but the temple was renovated a couple of times. The last restoration took 10 years, from February 2013 until January 2020.
Jorge R — Google review
Incredible interior. The alters were rococo and just incredible. Part of a three church ticket. Well worth the visit.
Mark W — Google review
The Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Antônio Dias in Ouro Preto, Brazil, began as a chapel around 1699, built by bandeirante Antônio Dias and later elevated to a Matriz in 1705. A new structure replaced the deteriorated original in 1727, with construction led by Manuel Francisco Lisboa, father of Aleijadinho, both buried in the church. The building features a design typical of early 18th-century churches and includes unique interior spaces such as ambulatories and tribunes. Construction faced delays, with significant progress made between 1741 and 1770, including intricate carvings attributed to notable artisans. Maintenance and enhancements occurred through the 19th century, including the addition of an adro and iron gates. Several religious brotherhoods were active in the Matriz, though much of their documentation is lost. The church remains a historic and cultural landmark. The Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Ouro Preto is a valuable artistic and historical landmark, showcasing elements from three Baroque phases of Brazil-Colônia. Its interior decoration, attributed to Manoel Francisco Lisboa, features a richly detailed altar-mor with twisted columns, angels, and a transitioning style from Joanino Baroque to Rococo. The nave's eight older altars embody dense, high-relief carvings typical of the Joanino style, adorned with floral motifs, mythical creatures, and cherubs. The church also contains symbolic velários, oval panels depicting apostles and saints, and an extensive statuary collection, including prominent figures like Nossa Senhora da Conceição and saints of the altar-mor. Its unique features, such as altars adorned with carrancas, reflect its distinct cultural and artistic heritage.

(Translated by Google) Enchanting. After many years of waiting for the church's restoration, I was able to visit this jewel of Minas Gerais' Baroque style. The church is spectacular. The carvings and imagery are fascinating. Brilliance and beauty are everywhere. Not to mention the representative collection of sacred elements typical of a Baroque church. There is also a small museum dedicated to Aleijadinho, one of the great artists of our Baroque period. And at the foot of the altar of Our Lady of Good Death lies his grave. (Original) Encantadora. A igreja é espetacular.

Greatest restaurant in Ouro Preto, very attentive staff - top notch. The food quality is suberb, ask for recommendations from your waiter, drinks are also very good! Probably the best restaurant in Ouro Preto, certainly the best Italian one. After 4 months travelling all over Brazil, for the 1st time I found a REAL ITALIAN PIZZA ! The parmesan cream fettuccine with "bife de chorizo" (the Argentinian way) was absolutely delicious. Look at how an Italian rolls the fettuccine properly around the fork... 😉 Good selection of red wines as well. Absolutely recommended.

Nice restaurant, good food, although I expected a bit more from the Risotto Bianco than just a steak with creamy rice. The flavours were somewhat ordinary. The restaurant is pretty, with nice patio seating that’s great for enjoying a drink with friends and family. The food is just okay; I was expecting more from the tutu dish. Since it’s a share plate for two, it would be nice to receive two eggs instead of one egg cut in half. On the other hand, the parmigiana was delicious!

Lovely restaurant in the heart of Ouro Preto. They have a small garden where you can sit as well. It’s just a bit tricky to get down the steps to the garden because they are really steep, so nothing for wheelchairs. The food was delicious, we had Filet Mignon with blue cheese risotto and fish with rice and cheese. The service for the drinks was a bit slow, but they were very friendly. Great restaurant to visit in Ouro Preto.

Came on a Thursday night, we tried to order five different dishes, and they were out of every single one. They should’ve just closed for the night instead of making people choose from a two item menu, it would save them the embarrassment of responding “no” to everything clients attempt to order. 🥲 The waiters were very nice, but I feel bad for them.

The Igreja Matriz de Santa Efigênia, located in Ouro Preto, Brazil, is an important Baroque church with strong Afro-Brazilian cultural elements. Built by the Confraternity of the Rosary, composed of enslaved and freed black individuals, its construction began in 1734 and concluded in 1785. Various notable artists participated in its development, including Aleijadinho, who contributed a soapstone sculpture for the facade. The church has a unique rectangular floor plan, innovative architectural features, and symbolic decorations, such as a representation of a Black pope in the chancel. Over the years, it underwent several modifications and restorations, including a major restoration from 2008 to 2014 to address structural and decorative issues. It was officially listed as a historic site in 1939.

The Mina de Ouro Santa Rita is a fascinating and captivating destination in Ouro Preto. It offers an incredible tour guided by knowledgeable individuals who provide insightful information about the mine's history. This remarkable site allows visitors to immerse themselves in the past, gaining a deep understanding of what life was like for miners during that time period. The mine's rich heritage and intense historical significance make it a must-visit location for those interested in exploring the depths of Brazil's mining industry.
I just turned up to this mine by myself one day in Ouro Preto, and stumbled upon Jeferson, a local guy who is giving guided tours in this mine. But more than that, he is giving a nice history lesson from the time of colonization by Portugal and the gold rush that followed. He is also explaining how the everyday life was for the African slaves, and the hierarchical system in place. The mines are very interesting and goes very deep. You can crawl into some really dark tunnels in there. Not for claustrophobic people. There is no entrance fee, but at the end you can give a tip based on how much you appreciated the experience. I ended up sitting with Jeferson for almost 3 hours, and we had many interesting conversations. The guy only speaks Portuguese, and even though my understanding of the language is not the best, I could understand almost everything he told me. Highly recommended.

This is the best historical site in Ouro Preto! The painstaking renovation performed by the family who own it is truly extraordinary. Our guide, Matteus, a young architecture student at the university, lavished his attention on our small group, providing us with a fascinating, detailed description in Portuguese and English of the Palacio's history, its residents as far back as the early 18th century, and its renovation from a ruin, which took 8 years to complete. We were also fortunate to meet the family who have put their hearts and souls (and their own money) into bringing this important historical landmark back to life. The restored Palacio D'Ouro is a labor of love and worth every penny to see in all its magnificence. Not to be missed!

We really enjoyed this guided tour of the property. Lots of great information on the property, history and artifacts. The tour is in Portuguese so without a translator it might be harder to understand everything.

Excellent guided tour. Explains the history of gold mining in Ouro Preto, the family that owned the mine and the role of slavery. A visit to the house is followed by a walk through a small mine and a description of the separation of the gold from the mud. Nice views from the gardens. Tours in English available. Best to check tour times before going.

No good, complicated process. Found the receptionist disrespectful. Do not recommend going. Further, you make a comment as if you know who I am or when I came. You don't know, so don't assume, you make yourself look unintelligent (desiring to use a more harsh word). You don't know my experience, when I came, who I am, or what my experience was. By responding, you show the true nature of yourself as an arrogant, petulant child who tries to gaslight and invalidate someone else's experience. THIS IS MY REVIEW. I WONT BE SILENCED! AGAIN, I DO NOT RECOMMEND COMING HERE!

Great! English tours available BUT arrange a day beforehand to ensure. Wasn't available on the spot when I showed up (which I didn't expect). Good value for the money, yet the mining part is rather small/short and worth combining it with another mine in town.

This was a really amazing experience at the Palacio D'Ouro. My family and I were visiting from the United States and we had to come to this based on the reviews and I have to say it did not disappoint. Such a well-kept place and amazing history plus we had a celebrity walking us through the event which was fantastic.

In the heart of Ouro Preto, Brazil, stands the Church of Nossa Senhora das Mercês e da Misericórdia, also known as Merces de Cima. This 18th-century church features a simple yet captivating design with a tower by Manuel Francisco de Araujo. Despite its small size, it holds historical significance and is adjacent to a quaint cemetery.
(Translated by Google) Definitely the most beautiful viewpoint in Ouro Preto. Right at the entrance to the historic center, it is a very popular and beautiful place. The church is beautiful on the outside, but I didn't have the chance to see inside because it was closed the whole time I was there.

(Translated by Google) This church is located at the top of the hill, just before the entrance to the historic center. It has a very pleasant lookout point with a beautiful view of the city. One detail that stood out is that, in the cemetery next to it, a crime occurred in 2001 that shook the city: the murder of tourist Aline. She was found dead on the cemetery grounds, which attracted the attention of curious onlookers seeking supernatural contact there at night. I should emphasize here that this is a church that is difficult to visit, as its opening hours vary. I didn't have the opportunity to find it open.

(Translated by Google) Tiradentes Square – Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais Tiradentes Square, the heart of Ouro Preto, is one of those places that blends architectural beauty with undeniable historical significance. Surrounded by colonial mansions, museums, and charming restaurants, it's the ideal starting point for exploring the city. But be careful: behind the hustle and bustle of tourists and selfies with the statue of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, there's a story that deserves to be told more accurately than textbooks usually portray. History Beyond the Statue Many people believe that Tiradentes was executed there, in the square itself, but this is not true. In reality, he was hanged in Rio de Janeiro in 1792. What happened in Ouro Preto (then Vila Rica) was the public display of parts of his body as a form of intimidation against those who sympathized with the Minas Gerais Conspiracy. One of the places chosen for this "demonstration" was precisely this square, where his imposing statue, erected in the early 20th century, now stands. Another curious and little-known detail: the popular image of Tiradentes, with his long hair and thick beard, is more of a constructed symbol than an accurate portrait. At the time, political prisoners had their heads shaved as a form of humiliation and punishment. In other words, the current image was inspired more by the figure of Christ, to reinforce the "martyr" character of the inconfidente, than by any real record. Practical tips for your visit The square is surrounded by important tourist attractions, such as the Inconfidência Museum, the Science and Technology Museum of the School of Mines, and several shops selling crafts and local products. In terms of dining, there's no shortage of good options: restaurants, cafes, and bars in the surrounding area cater to everyone from those seeking a typical Minas Gerais lunch to those simply looking for a good coffee or craft beer. If you're arriving by car, be patient. Parking there is a near-epic task, especially on weekends and holidays. The best tip is to arrive early—very early. After 10 a.m., the spaces on the nearby streets are usually already occupied. Another option is to use the paid parking lots nearby or even park your car a little further away and walk. Conclusion Tiradentes Square isn't just a postcard—it's a place for reflection on Brazilian history, full of layers and contradictions. It blends the baroque charm of Ouro Preto with a turbulent past that still echoes in the cobblestones. It's worth sitting on a bench, watching the world go by, and letting history (and the smell of cheese bread wafting from the nearby eateries) do its work. Just don't forget comfortable shoes: the hills come right after.

Museu Municipal Casa dos Inconfidentes is housed in a beautiful building located in Praca Tiradentes, with the statue of Tiradentes facing it. The museum, which was once the Municipal Chamber and Public Jail of the old Vila Rica, now holds the remains of some of the inconfidentes. While only thirteen of the twenty-four sentenced by the Portuguese crown have been found, an empty tombstone represents the others, including Tiradentes.

Taberna Music Bar in Ouro Preto offers a rustic setting with exposed brickwork, creating a colonial vibe. Here's a tip to follow the happy hour promotions, that day it was 2 drinks for the price of one. So, as a group of people, we tried several drinks from the restaurant, highlighting the experience of receiving the drink and the intense and different flavors. Eating several portions is a plus, just one detail, but the restaurant made a mistake when making a portion of dumplings and not putting a sauce on the bottom, which caused them to make a mistake when bringing the dish to the table, delaying the order a little due to the substitution. Good volume of food per dish and price according to the quality offered.

(Translated by Google) I've been to a few restaurants in Ouro Preto and have confirmed that the only way to taste well-seasoned food, with just the right amount of salt, is to go to smaller places, places where locals go. When I realized I should avoid tourist restaurants, I was able to experience how delicious Minas Gerais food is—well-seasoned, flavorful, and tastes like grandma's cooking. This restaurant is an excellent example: simple but well-prepared food—the Minas Gerais cuisine we're looking for. Great place, great service.

Minas Gerais restaurant
Restaurant
Restaurante Jacubas is a hidden gem in Ouro Preto, offering delicious Minas Gerais cuisine at a great value. The buffet features traditional local dishes executed with excellence, including the must-try pork tail stew. For around 60 reais, patrons can enjoy an all-you-can-eat experience that even includes desserts. While the service is average and the restaurant can get crowded and noisy, it's still a cozy spot to indulge in authentic regional flavors without breaking the bank.
Really good food and definitely a great way to try many different mineira food in one meal. The feijoada was especially good. The buffet option was 75 reais which was totally worth it. Highly recommended!

Good food! Per kilo at 89 reais/kg or all you can eat for 60. The beans were particularly good, and they have a good spread of chillies

As a Canadian living in Brasília for three years, my wife and I stumbled upon this incredible, small, cozy, authentic restaurant during our trip to Ouro Preto for a wedding — and wow, what a find! Jacubas Restaurante was honestly one of the best restaurant I’ve ever been to in Brazil (and maybe anywhere!). The food quality, flavor, and variety were outstanding. They offer both per-kilo (R$99/kg) and all-you-can-eat (R$75) options. I went for the all-you-can-eat, which also included dessert — and everything was unbelievable. My wife chose the per-kilo option, and both of us left absolutely amazed. I’m a foodie, and I don’t say this lightly — everything tasted homemade, authentic, and full of flavor. The selection was huge, the portions generous, and the dessert table was out of this world. It was so good that I actually went back a second time before leaving Ouro Preto. If you’re visiting this beautiful historic city, do yourself a favor and eat here. Come hungry, bring friends, and enjoy one of the most delicious experiences you’ll find in Minas Gerais. If I could give 6 stars, I would! Jacubas Restaurante – you’re the best in Ouro Preto.

If you like the local cuisine, this is a great value. Eat as much as you want - including desserts - for a very reasonable price. One of the best options for comida mineira in Ouro Preto.

An excellent buffet with lots of choices of mineiro food. It was one of the largest buffets I've found in Brazil. They even had a few kinds of candied fruit for dessert. Of five places I ate at in Ouro Preto, this was my favorite.

It is an all you can eat buffet/restaurant where you can choose two payment options: by weight (99 pessos) or per person regardless of quantity (75 pessos). Drinks and coffee extra. If you have nothing to compare to, it has good food close to home made and tasty. But in my opinion the price doesn't correspond to the variety offered. Service is good and I liked the fresh squeezed orange juice without added sugar.

Some typical Minas Gerais dishes served here. Lunch buffet ran for R$35. I don't feel the need to eat dinner after, so quite cheap for two meals.
