Potosi in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Potosi, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Potosí offers a striking mix of colonial history and dramatic high-altitude scenery, set at more than 4,000 meters above sea level. Once one of the richest cities in the world thanks to Cerro Rico’s silver mines, its historic center is filled with ornate churches, grand plazas, and well-preserved colonial buildings recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can learn about the city’s mining heritage in museums or on guided tours to the mountain itself, while also experiencing traditional Andean culture in local markets and festivals.
With favorites like Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, Restaurante Tambo Señorial, and Saint Theresa Museum, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Koala Cafe and La Casona 1775 so you can get the best taste of Potosi while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

The National Mint of Bolivia, also known as the Casa Nacional de la Moneda, is a captivating historical site nestled in Potosi. This remarkable museum showcases an extensive collection of coins and antique machinery used for silver production, reflecting its rich heritage. Established in 1572 under the orders of the Viceroy of Toledo, it stands as one of South America's most significant museums.
Very interesting and well presented museum. Very helpful to understand the rich important history mining has in Bolivia and this region in specific. All of the texts in the museum are in Spanish so it’s helpful if you speak the language, you can select an English tour however. You can only visit this museum with a scheduled tour guide.
Paul O — Google review
We had a good English tour, the museum has quite a good mix of different things. Of course there is a lot related to the old mint, like the machines they used in the different points in history and a lot of old coins. There is a historic library with important, old books for Potosí. Also some minerals, paintings, religious things, etc. Overall the whole building is also nice to see. Maybe they could improve a bit by defining clear start times of the tours. Some people joined the tours 10 minutes after the start.
Philipp S — Google review
A quite interesting museum. My wife and I visited it in October 2025. At this time the entry was 40 BOB for foreigners. We were happy to find out that this automatically included an English-speaking guide. However, as with most museums in the country, there is no clear logic as to how the exhibits are organized. The rooms jump from religious paintings to old coins, from UNESCO-Certificates to old coin-stamping machines. Still it is definitely worth a visit if you happen to be in Potosi.
Dmitry S — Google review
The museum is great. But the guide qasn’t really happy to be there. Also the direction of the room didn t makes sense sometimes, like not in chronological order. Appart from that it’s good to lesrn about the history of the coins.
Tony C — Google review
English tour was brilliant and provided an insight into the history of Potosí and the beginning of the mint. The grounds are beautiful, you must pay extra if wanting to take photographs. Tour lasts around 1.5 hours and was 40 bolivianos per person.
Kara H — Google review
Beautiful museum with lots of history about the history of silver in Potosi. I think the 20BoB extra cost for taking photos is quite steep. I came to Potosí for the mines and the museum tour, but I feel like the museum tour is quite rushed especially in the furnace rooms with actual silver history. There's also just too much talk about Catholicsm and paintings of virgin Mary, I prefer to spend more time on the actual silver tour and less on religion. All in all, it's a nice tour with beautiful artifacts and coin collections.
Hannah M — Google review
Interesting and well set up museum, but unfortunatelly, there were no tours in English and most of the information was only in Spanish. It means that as a foreigner you pay double what the locals pay and have to walk with the group (cannot explore on your own) and not understand anything. Not sure it is really worth the 40 BOB entrance ticket + 20 BOB for using the camea + almost 2 hours of your time.
Pavel P — Google review
Fantastic tour here—one of the best in the country. The guides were funny and knowledgeable and offered real insights into the life and times of Potosi’s heyday, and the exhibits inside the Mint are maintained well so that visitors can understand the conditions of the workers and the historical progression of the minting over the centuries. Certainly a tour worth taking.

Market
When in Potosi, Bolivia, a visit to Mercado Central de Potosí is a must, especially if you enjoy cooking for yourself. Despite its bustling and lively atmosphere, it may not be described as cheerful but it's definitely one of the liveliest places in the city. This local market offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture. You can find an array of items from fresh produce to clothing and electronics.
As a tourist I thought this place was awesome. Head upstairs and try a soup. It will cost less than $1.
Owen T — Google review
The markets are vibrant with lots of stalls, indigenous artefacts, and many women selling traditional items in and around the area. While it’s fun and colourful it must be vert difficult for many of the predominantly women trying to make a living. The markets are only a short walk from the central square.
Ross D — Google review
Fun place to wonder about, then have lunch upstairs. I ate here three days in a row and never became ill.
Thomas T — Google review
Nice area with lots of little stores etc.
Frank L — Google review
I have this special relationship with local markets, obviously because they are the liveliest places in every city! The small market "Mercado central" in Potosi is one of them, love it! Even not all the small shops were open, it was still nice to walk around! Interesting place to spend some time in the Center of Potosi!
Stefanos P — Google review
Make sure to look hard for eating options. There are great food options in the basement and top floors. API & pastels are served in the basement in the afternoon from around 16:00 until the evening. This market doesn’t contain too much fresh fruit and vegetables for sale.
SEB W — Google review
If you love markets around the world, you'll love this place 😊. Cheap food available too !

Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace

4.5
(91)
Catholic cathedral
La Catedral, located in the central square of Potosi, is a stunning colonial-era building that has been standing since the 16th century. Visitors can explore the cathedral on their own or opt for a guided tour, which includes access to the church tower offering breathtaking views of Potosi and Cerro Rico. The entrance fee grants access to the receptionist-accompanied tour and allows for picturesque moments within this historical gem.
The interior of the cathedral is not very impressive, a bit ugly to be honest. But the view point is absolutely stunning, you can see the panoramic view of the city without any visual blockage. This view point is a lot better than the one on the bell tower where the touristic center is. The price for entrance is 20 Bs, well worth the price. There are signs inside the cathedral says you can not take photos but the staff says you can...
Qiang ( — Google review
Very beautiful cathedral. For an entrance fee of 20 bolivianos you get accompanied into the cathedral by the receptionist and you can choose whether you want to walk around by yourself and take some pictures or whether you want to get a short guided tour (which I recommend), during which you can take your photos as well, of course. In the end you get to get up the church tower on your own from where you will have a stunning view over all of the city of Potosí and the Cerro Rico. Definitely a must see and located super centrally.

(Translated by Google) One of the most beautiful tours we did in Potosí. They told us everything about the construction of the church. We were able to see the first image of the Virgin of Copacabana. We also visited the old mausoleum of the church. The tour includes going up to the viewpoint, which is one of the bell towers. We had an incredible view of the city and Cerro Rico between the bells of that majestic cathedral. A unique experience. (Original) Uno de los tours más lindos que hicimos en Potosí. The Saint Theresa Museum is an exceptionally fascinating and remarkably well-maintained establishment. The guide's expertise was highly commendable, making it one of the city's standout attractions. This intriguing museum offers tours in various languages including French, Spanish, and presumably English as well. It provides an enlightening experience into the lives of the carmelitas, offering valuable insights into their way of life.
Interesting visit to know who the carmelitas lived
Renato C — Google review
This is interesting both from a historical and museum point of view. The Carmelite convent in Potosí, Bolivia, is actually the Santa Teresa Convent founded in 1685 by the Order of the Discalced Carmelites in honor of Saint Teresa of Avila. It was originally a home for Carmelite nuns, a cloistered home for young women from wealthy families, who entered at the age of 15 and lived in strict isolation, dedicating themselves to prayer, scripture, and tasks like baking and sewing. The convent was richly endowed with gifts from families, including paintings, jewellery, and furniture, which are now part of its museum collection showcasing religious art and historical items including stunning Baroque altarpieces, artworks by prominent painters and macabre relics such as self-flagellation tools.
Ross D — Google review
It's an extremely sad tour. It tells the story of how the terrible catholic institution not only made enslavement happen in America but also made millions of women being nuns that had to live away from society, not talking to their own family. They even show the self torture instruments and where the nuns' bodies were buried. It takes 1 hour and a half for the whole tour and it's very slow rhythm since the guide locks and opens each of the hundreds of rooms you have to get in. For 30 bobs I believe you better do something else.
Beatriz L — Google review
Was placed in a tour group that started 40 minutes prior, with the explanation that i could catch the beginning with the following tour. The tour guide was so dreadfully trite that simple plaques next to each item could've taken her job. No English tours were available. I left after 15 minutes.
Dima K — Google review
Saint Theresa Museum and Convent is incredible. Lydia provides an awesome tour in English. Teenage girls were only accepted into the convent if their family was wealthy enough to give a dowry of paintings or other valuables worth 2,000 pieces of gold. Once the girl entered, she never left the building for her entire life and could not see or talk to an outsider. Sounds horrible, but it was an honor. Amazing stories, amazing art. Amazing rooms.
Kym B — Google review
Interesting place but more as a museum of christian religious art than as a monastery. Actually very little is disclosed about the monastic lives of the nuns.
Mario G — Google review
Very interesting, very well preserved. And the guide was very good at her job ! One of the highlights of the city.

Mines
Cerro Rico, a mountain in Bolivia, is renowned for its historically abundant silver deposits. Potosi, the city built around it, once boasted a population of 150,000 and was one of the wealthiest cities globally due to the riches extracted from Cerro Rico's mines. The silver mined here fueled Spain's economy and supported lavish local amenities.
Instead of visiting the mines with an organised tour, I decided to climb the mountain. You can follow the roads used by the trucks (and that's probably the easiest way to the top) or you can scramble some parts to save time. Plenty of places with loose rocks so be careful. The summit of the mountain collapsed in 2011 and formed a crater. Watch out for the dogs.
Christopher W — Google review
People who worked at Mine are Heroes Unforgettable experience.
D K — Google review
Life-changing experience. Don’t cheap out: hire a local guide and buy gifts for the miners who let you visit, and el tío if that’s your thing. Maybe a few scraps of bread for the dogs, too. Again, hire a guide. Spending $15-20 to visit the right way is absolutely worth it.
Ben B — Google review
Very eye-opening experience to take a tour here. Astonished how miners work the same way as they did hundreds of years ago. Koala tours is recommended as they are a responsible agency.
Gergely S — Google review
Visiting the mines is not a joke but it's such a strong experience and I believe shouldn't be missed while in Potosi.
Cinzia C — Google review
Fascinating place with lots of history.
Saikhnaa — Google review
This place is arguably one of the most painful and intensely violated place I’ve been: this mountain is the symbol of a century-long robbery that has been going on since the discovery of its silver, and it is the grave of thousands of people that poison themselves by working tirelessly in its dark caves chasing easy money. Its energy is one of illusion, it’s scarred face is the totem of a culture based on a very very volatile value. Go by all means and walk into a mine, you will never forget it, ever.
Paola E — Google review
Iconic mountain with a dramatic history dominating the city centre. Lots of mines are still functioning these days: try to visit them with a local guide and buy some presents for the poor miners as an expression of respect, solidarity and interest

Koala Cafe is a charming eatery located in front of the Coin Museum, offering a delightful dining experience. The cafe provides a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, making it an ideal choice for both vegetarians and meat lovers. With attentive service and a cozy atmosphere, visitors can enjoy dishes like lasagna, lentil burgers, quinoa soup, and vegetable omelettes.
A great little nook for vegetarians! You’ll come to find that eating out anywhere in Bolivia usually takes a while and that some things listed on the menu aren’t actually available. Nevertheless, the service was attentive from when we walked in and they had many options to chose from. Ended up staying a few hours, had some coffee, and used the wifi while we mapped our next route. Bathroom was clean. Glad they’re one of a few vegetarian options in the area!
Rachel — Google review
Only cafe that serves breakfast on Sunday morning. Breakfast was good, fast and cheap. We came back for lunch. After 40min of waiting we asked if we could have our order in the next 30 minutes, because we had signed up for a tour in the afternoon. They told us they could not serve us on time. There was a large group that came in after us and were served before us. We left without food or drinks.
Lina V — Google review
The chocolate cake and apple pie were great. The cafe is very quaint and cute, really enjoyed the atmosphere. Located right in the heart of Potosí. The coffee wasn’t great, but other than that, a really nice find for an afternoon snack or cake.

Small place on First Floor. Fully vegetarian but not the best veggie food ever….
Marcel V — Google review
Nice little restaurant with loads of vegetarian options and meat options. I recommend the vegetarian lasagne (very tasty) and the vegetable omelette (nice, a few more vegetables would have been better). The cappuccino was good too.
Imogen C — Google review
Two stars for the lemonade which was nice and fresh and for it being in a central location. However, the vegetarian burger was just about edible, the vegetarian soups were alright and the veg lasagne was tasteless. But the worst thing of all were the veg crepes - whatever you do, do not order these. The crepe itself was cold but the veg was just boiled and completely flavourless and unseasoned. It really was a shame - we wanted to like this place so much. Perhaps the meat options are better.
Simran D — Google review
It is really good for Vegetarians. We had lassana and lentil burger both of them were good and price was nice. The ambience is small but sweet. Service was fast. For the price in the lunch you can get cheaper options but I think they have more variety.

Of course these touristy restaurants are overpriced, but I expect to get a decent meal in return. However my milanese had no taste at all, probably it's simply heated up frozen food. Two stars because of nice decor and music. For food go somewhere else, for drinks this place should be fine.

One of its specialties is the alpaca steak, which stands out among its offerings. Visitors have praised the restaurant for its flavorful creole dishes and highlighted it as one of the few places open on Sunday evenings in the city.

Only place open on a Sunday, about five other people were in the restaurant when we were there but still a 20 minute wait for two bottled drinks and an hour for two food dishes. I ordered plain rice and veg (coeliac) and it came out as a mixture of lukewarm and cold, whilst my partner ordered a pizza and said it was ok, but doughy. Prices ok.

Save your money and your time. Service was extremely slow despite there being only one other table and 3 staff members on the restaurant floor. Our drinks took 25 minutes to arrive - one of the two drinks was a bottle of water… We had to remind them about our drinks. Our chicken wing starter came out bloody and undercooked. After showing the waitress, they took them back to re-cook. However we received no apology for neither the drinks delay nor the undercooked wings. A smile or something would have been nice. The bacon and tomato pasta sauce tasted like barbecue sauce. Avoid.

Restaurante Tambo Señorial is a small, family-owned restaurant in Potosi that offers a very local experience. The owner, Jacqueline, is known for her genuine and down-to-earth nature. She is passionate about her job and makes everything fresh to order. The restaurant is not a typical tourist spot but welcomes everyone warmly. They offer delicious traditional Potosi food, including the local specialty K'alaphurca soup cooked with volcanic stones.
DELICIOUS!! This is the only restaurant where you can find a vegetarian version of K'alaphurca, the local tipical soup cooked with volcanic stones and served while still boiling. Amazing, abundant and delicious! I haven't tried other dishes but I could bet they are all great. In addition, Jacqueline, the owner, is such a lovely and kind woman, very passionate about her job. She will be more than happy to explain you the meal preparation and even prepare out-of-menu and vegetarian plate for you if arranged in advance, just reach her by phone and make a reservation! Muchas gracias Jaqueline ♥️

Quaint little local restaurant in Potosí serving absolutely delicious and great value K’alapurka hot stone soup. It’s a tiny restaurant and fills up so be prepared to wait. On top of that the service is incredibly slow so there’s not a high turnover of guests. If you can handle that the food is worth the wait.

We went here due to good reviews online. It was busy and the staff were very rude to another table telling them they should have ordered all their food at once rather than ordering some and then more. Zero atmosphere, felt very stressed. Food was not that good and more expensive than other places in Bolivia. Tacos particularly bad and greasy. Maybe has changed owners?

The vegetarian stone soup is worth every meter in altitude and every minute waiting. The hype is real. The soup is a prime example of comfort food, and reminds me of grits but with Andean flavors. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy this dish.

This is a great, home cooking style restaurant. Definitely have to try the K'alaphurca but the pollo a la lena was very good too, having really enjoyed the chicken in Peru this was just as well done. Would recommend if you're stopping in Potosi. Great value too. Joe & Heidi
