Ancient Ruins
Pucará de Tilcara is a significant pre-Inca archaeological site located in the southern outskirts of Tilcara. It was originally built by the Omaguaca tribe in the 12th century and later declared a National Monument in 2000. The hilltop town offers well-preserved ruins, including ancient dwellings and a town square, providing insight into how this indigenous tribe lived.
Gorgeous desert landscape in a cool archeological site. There is an optional informative tour and when I overheard the guide, he seemed very knowledgeable.
Javier K — Google review
Nice small town. You can find knick-knacks in the main square. There is a public restroom that you have to pay to access. Pretty common practice in that area Then we visited the botanical garden which it’s a must.
Adriana B — Google review
Sept.25: we went late afternoon by car, the road is very bumpy, but could do it by regular car. The tour was already closed, so we looked around by ourselves & went up the Mirador Cerro de la Cruz (viewpoint). It's a steep walk up, but rewarding views from top! There was a sign that you could call to visit the Cueva del Wayra caves (for next day), but no response either...
Petra ( — Google review
I discovered this by mistake and am so glad I did. The tour guide is a must! He is a phylosiphy professor from University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and his explanations were comprehensive, very nuanced in discussing colonization

Beautiful view and so much history! Learned a lot from our guide. Jardin botanico inside is small but very nice . Heads up last time to enter is 17:30, after 17:30 they wont let you in
Stephanie — Google review
Impressive remains of an ancient city, first taken over by Incas and then by the Spanish. Great views as it's on a hill and many cacti🌵 around if you like them.
Petr V — Google review
An incredibly important pre-Colombian and even pre-Inca civilization archeological site, with traces of human habitation that date back more than 10,000 years. This fortified city that at its peak housed over 2,000 inhabitants was originally built by the Omaguaca tribe around the 12th century. Unfortunately not everything is original / preserved, but part of the Pucará was rebuilt in the last centuty (it was re-discovered 1908) and a monument "in the style of the stone houses" was even added in 1935 to commemorate the archaeologist who first excavated the land. The location was strategically chosen to be easily defensible and to provide good views over a long stretch of the Quebrada de Humahuaca and the views are still spectacular today. The Pucará de Tilcara was declared a National Monument in 2000, and is the only publicly accessible archaeological site in the Quebrada de Humahuaca. Highly recommended!

Altura Botanical Garden, located near the fort entrance, offers a diverse collection of cacti and other plant species. Visitors can also experience the unique opportunity to strike the Piedra Campana with a special mallet that produces bell-like sounds, staying true to its name 'Bell Stone.' This garden provides an immersive botanical experience amidst historical surroundings.
Gorgeous and very original botanical garden. Pricey but worth it.

Could be better maintained but we enjoyed the walk and the views! Entrance for foreigners was $350 per adult

Svetlana D — Google review
This is more a collection of cactus than a nice botanical garden. Entrance fee covers this and the Pucara, and it’s worth it to visit the Pucara, but the garden itself isn’t really worth a visit, especially a paid one.

It's a very nice walk from tilcara. You feel like you are traveling in time. The landscape is beautiful and it's pretty relaxing.

El Molle Alfajores "Casa Central y Fabrica"

El Molle Alfajores "Casa Central y Fabrica" is a delightful spot nestled in the heart of Tilcara, where you can indulge in some of Argentina's most beloved treats. This charming café not only serves up excellent coffee but also boasts an impressive selection of alfajores—those delectable cookie sandwiches filled with rich dulce de leche or fruity pastes and often coated in chocolate.
This address is for the original Molle, not the cafe, according to our tour guide. But both should be the same. We bought six boxes of Alfajores here, not knowing what to expect. We picked chocolate with orange, quinoa with dulce de leche, purple corn with dulce de leche, and three white flour with quince, fig, and peach. Among them all, chocolate orange, purple corn with dulce de leche, and fig were the most popular among our friends. We like those three combinations the most as well. Compared to Havana's , and Dulce de Leche & Co, these are unique with distinctive flavors and not awfully sweet. We still love the strong caramel smell of Dulce de Leche & Co products, but the three flavors of El Molle are very impressive. They are very creative and relatively healthier, full of local flavors and hard to find elsewhere. I would highly recommend them if you happen to be there. The gift boxes are super cute too, with all the highlights of Tilcara. Perfect gift. I have the peach flavor in one photo I posted instead of the fig because I lost it. Sorry.

Google took us right below so we thought we had to climb the hill to reach it but there is definitely a pathway above leading directly to the statue and view. We felt silly but it was a nice workout up the hill. The view is beautiful but definitely check out El Hornacal in Humahuaca for a more impressive more of something like this. photos taken by @alejandroseveriniph

La Rockola in Tilcara is a surprising find for delicious pizzas and other tasty dishes. The tomato sauce on the pizza is particularly noteworthy, earning high praise. Visitors also appreciate the friendly local vibe and the variety of food options available, making it a great choice for vegetarians. The restaurant's atmosphere and outstanding service add to the overall dining experience. While prices may be slightly higher than average for Tilcara, the quality of food and generous portions make it worth a visit.
I should have taken a photo before eating half the pizza. It's great pizza. One pizza is good for 4 people. Fresh ingredients. Good beer on tap. Really sweety staff. Slightly smokey wood oven atmosphere. Plants and bricks. Great tunes.

We went a bit early, 7pm. It was a bit shabby, worn down. Definitely more of a beer, rock music, live music and watching sports on TV place. They only had 3 things available on the menu. There were flies buzzing around everywhere. Having said that, we had a delicious quinoa and blue cheese empanada. The meat one was pretty OK.

Restaurant
Restaurant El Patio is a charming dining spot located in Tilcara, Argentina, just a few steps away from the central plaza. The restaurant offers healthy and authentic Argentine cuisine at reasonable prices. The menu, curated by chef Anita Ponce, features a delightful mix of regional specialties and classic Argentine dishes. Guests have praised the flavorful and generous portions of dishes such as tamalitos and empanadas. The friendly staff, including chef Anita and waiter Gustavo, provide excellent service to diners.
El Patio is a lovely place: centrally located, yet quiet, comfortable, and homey. Their menu changes frequently, but you can be sure the food will be well-priced, home-cooked, and tasty. (There were also plenty of vegetarian options when we went.) The wait staff was friendly, and the chef-owner herself came out and greeted us like old friends. If/when I return to Tilcara, I'll be back to eat here!
Joe S — Google review
We came here based on recommendations, but honestly it was disappointing. The meat was a bit tough, dishes were just average, and in one of them I found a hair. At first I thought it might be mine and kept eating, but then under the potatoes I found another one — short and black, so definitely not mine. That completely killed my appetite. On top of that, they don’t take card payments. The total was 37,000, which feels quite overpriced for such basic village-style food. The place itself wasn’t very clean either — lots of flies inside. Wouldn’t recommend.
Alina S — Google review
We had the most wonderful time at El Patio! The atmosphere is stunning. Anita, the proprietor, is wonderful. The food is delicious. We went back multiple times on our trip. I highly recommend the morcilla!
Lily G — Google review
We had a great meal here on recommendation from a friend who lives in town - wonderful options for everyone in our party including vegetarian and lactose-free, and the ambience was exceptional. Such warm and welcoming staff!

It was delicious! And you can pay there with any debit (not only visa) which was a big pro when the only ATM in town didn't work! Nice to sit in the patio and inside which is very homey.

La Casa del Tata | Hosteria . Restaurant offers warmly furnished rooms in a casual hotel setting with stunning mountain views. The restaurant serves exquisite dishes, with the peanut soup and locro being standout choices. While the milanesa was good, it didn't quite match up to the other impeccable offerings. The noodles with sauce were delicious, but some dishes like the trout with lemon sauce and papines fell short of expectations.
Been to the restaurant, not the hotel, and it was pretty good, although not impressive. However, given the reasonable prices , it still deserves a 4.5 starts , especially because there aren’t many places that would blow your mind in the area. Get The quinoa soup!

(Translated by Google) The food was good, but the service was terrible. They never brought us the menu. Only when they came to take our order did they realize they hadn't given us the menu. Then we had to wait 45 minutes for a small Milanese. They also didn't bring us any dressing for the salad. I went to get it myself because I was almost out of Milanese. When they finally brought it, it was reluctantly. (Original) La comida estuvo bien pero el servicio fue pésimo. Nunca nos trajeron la carta.
