Berriedale in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Berriedale, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Berriedale is best known as the riverside suburb that hosts MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art, one of Australia’s most talked‑about cultural attractions. Set on the banks of the Derwent River, it offers striking water and mountain views, with parks and walking paths along the foreshore. Nearby wineries and local producers showcase southern Tasmania’s food and wine, while Hobart’s city centre is only a short drive away, making Berriedale an easy base for broader exploration.
With favorites like Faro Bar + Restaurant, MONA, and Moorilla Winery, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Faro Bar + Restaurant so you can get the best taste of Berriedale while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

MONA, short for the Museum of Old and New Art, is a unique underground art museum located on the Moorila Winery grounds in Glenorchy, Tasmania. The museum boasts a playful vibe and features ancient and contemporary art collections. Situated on an isthmus extending into the Derwent River, MONA has become a popular destination for wine enthusiasts and tourists alike.
My favourite gallery in Australia, and maybe even the whole world. It's personally funded by the super generous David Walsh in his avant-garde art collection. The gallery is based on the central themes of sex and death as a "subversive adult Disneyland". Not suitable for children so leave them at home. Food choices are extensive and there are a range of super restaurants. A few selected art works require bookings and a nominal payment which were worth it if you're an art lover. If you're just a casual visitor just skip these. Allow at least half a day for a good visit. Catching the MONA ferry is the best way to get here for the full experience. If you want to stay for dinner then you'll have to drive and there's plenty of free parking. A final tip is to use the MONA app called "The O" which will track the art you see and allow you to remember what you saw. It has some brief info on each piece, audio guide, and virtual queuing for the exclusive art experiences.

An Absolut Must !!!!!! If you love out the box, eccentric and exploring this is for you. Not sure for kids as I feel my lot would only switch on when the boobs were on display. 10/10 staff were great and facilities also fantastic. Go and have fun.

MONA 🤩 what an absolutely fantastic museum (especially if you're not a traditional museum-goer like myself). I cannot recommend MONA enough, it is so good! Fun, quirky, confronting, interactive and educational. There is something for everyone. The entire space is so well set up, with different levels offering different installations and artworks. On the ground level you'll find a dimly lit, but classy bar and café space. Hands down, an absolute cracking attraction to visit when in Hobart. Its an easy 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Wonderful !! If you enjoy innovative and quirky, surprising art in a unique, impressive setting, DON'T MISS IT !! There really isn't anything like MONA anywhere else in the world !! We're seniors from Sydney and we loved it, arrived at 10 and didn't leave until 3. Make sure you allow at least 2 hours, but more is better !! We were staying not far away and didn't have any problem parking. You can also buy tickets there ( and avoid the booking fee ) , but I wouldn't risk that in peak times.

Mona!!! What can I say about this museum! The place itself (outside) has a nice view, lots of interesting art pieces where you can take photos, and even a trampoline for kids! As for the museum itself — well, it’s not really my type of museum, but I was curious to see what was inside. It turned out to be quite a strange place, with some creepy photos and artworks that might not be to everyone’s taste! On the underground level, be cautious — there’s an adult-only area, so definitely don’t bring your kids inside! Some parts are really creepy and could even give you nightmares. There’s also an old tomb that I believe hasn’t been opened — it felt like something from the pyramid era! As for the value… hmm, I think the ticket price is a bit overrated. Would I come back? Maybe not — once is enough! Hahaha.

Utterly amazing. By far the best gallery I have ever seen. Breathtaking displays and architecture. Lovely ferry trips to and from the gallery. Our visit to the MONA is the absolute highlight of our holiday so far.
John B — Google review
The building is incredible. The highlight of all the exhibits is a machine that takes a crap a couple of times a day. If your into watching machines shit you’ll love the MONA. Empty a bin out in the local park and admire the modern art you create and save yourself the entry.

Loved Mona. We took the ferry and paid extra for the 'Posh Pit'. The museum is just amazing. We spent 5 hours there, but will have to come back as we couldn't see everything. I have been to a few museums all over the world and this is my new favourite

Moorilla Winery is located at the corner of MONA and offers a relaxed atmosphere with stunning views of its own vineyard. The winery provides an incredible experience with knowledgeable and hospitable staff, such as Winnie, who shares insights about Moorilla's wines and its sister winery, Domaine A. Visitors can enjoy engaging wine tastings at the Cellar Door hosted by friendly staff like Jesse, who also shares interesting stories.
My fiance and I had a great time at Moorilla. Our host, a guy from Adelaide, is very knowledgable at not only wine but also history of Mona. Really appreciated his curating and customer service. Thank YOU!

This place is so cool. I was down there for a few hours and time went so quick so much to look at and once you come back up the top you can always go back down because there’s still so much to see again. Would definitely recommend going here worth the money.

We had a wonderful experience at Moorilla Cellar Door on our last day of the Tasmania trip. I’m not a big fan of wine myself, but my father-in-law and partner absolutely love it — and I have to say, I ended up really enjoying it too! The staff were amazing, especially the gentleman who looked after us during the tasting — the one in the pictures (I think his name was Brad, though I’m not entirely sure). He read my expressions so well and helped me find wines that suited my taste perfectly. He explained the food pairings beautifully and made the whole experience fun, relaxed, and memorable. Such a great way to wrap up our trip!

We only had starters here to try with the views and some wine. Wine was really delicious and the starter we had was a truffle mushroom sundae with brioche. This was really delicious all together and unique. The views were lovely. However, the service was pretty poor. Repeated requests for additional wine and long delays in bringing the orders back. A shame as we would have liked to have stayed longer, but we didn't have the time.

Nicole greeted us very warm and kindly!🤍 She explained about wine professionally and it really helped me to enjoy various wines. It was lovely and amazing!!!! I loved everything there and wanna come back to enjoy again.🫶🫶🫶

This is my 3rd trip to MONA and somehow I had not known previously that the food element to this place existed (maybe because it’s called a Wine Bar I might have thought it was a cellar door?). Anyway, this trip we got to go prior to visiting the museum and were extremely surprised by the food on offer. This place is like fine dining without the pretentious people / restaurant which is okay by us. We had the oysters, God’s Mezze and the King Prawn Poke Bowl to share. The dishes were packed with flavour, super delicious and plentiful. The staff were super friendly, the restaurant was very spacious and the food came out quickly. All pluses in our book. Would definitely recommend you include it for your next trip to MONA.

If all your stars line up, you may be lucky enough to be hosted by the more than lovely Maddy. It happened to us. As we were chatting and travelled around the world we got to taste one sparkling, two whites and two reds. Very unique wines with very unique notes. Definitely worth a visit. Definitely worth an add-on to a museum visit. XO

Restaurant
Located within an art museum with scenic water views, The Source offers a contemporary French dining experience. The restaurant boasts a stylish ambiance and an extensive wine list. While the menu features refined options and emphasizes local ingredients, some visitors found the portion sizes to be small for the price. However, many praised the excellent service and timely food delivery. Diners enjoyed dishes like oysters, fish, cauliflower, truffle toastie, and apple pie dessert.
Service was good and attentive. Food quality was good and beautiful. Setting and ambience is positive with enough space between each table. Really enjoy the cauliflower starters and our mains (Risotto and Fish)!

I stopped in for a late lunch on a whim after a wine tasting. The space is stunning and serene, the service is exact, friendly, yet a touch slow- my server was awesome though. This quickly went from the best meal I had in Aus to an absolutely mid-tasting meal. The blanc de blanc was gorgeous, the oysters were the best I’ve had in Oceania, I will never stop talking about the tartare- all elements worked together beautifully and you have to get it with the wallaby. I also ordered the mushroom sundae which I was really excited about, but they were out of it so I was persuaded to try the shrimp starter “boat in the source”. I had a few bites but didn’t eat most of it, it should not be a starter (or on the menu in my opinion). It’s oily, flavorless (desperately needed salt which is saying a lot because I never salt my food when I dine out). While I think the components and execution could be reimagined for something special, this execution was more a savory chunky oatmeal mush with some shrimp and annoying garnish that’s hard to eat around. They were kind enough to not charge me which I appreciated. The lemongrass cream could have been spectacular, but the cream was underwhelming as was the basil ice cream, this also needs to be reimagined - it would be better as a panna cotta with a creamy sorbet. I’d happily come here again, but I’d go with my gut on the food.

Lovely restaurant in an interesting museum! It's nice to be able to get a good food while you are enjoying spending time in the museum ground! There are a couple restaurants in MONA but this one is in door so we booked it in case the weather gets bad. The restaurant was upstairs from hotel reception with a cool skull stand in front. Delicious food, friendly staff, and nice decorations! There is a chef set menu with wine pairing if you want to go with something special and substantial! We had one entree and one main each and then share one dessert. I like the beautiful plates they use for oyster 🦪🥰

Try The Source when you're at MONA. Food is great, views are amazing and service was top notched. The Roasted Seafood Hotpot was 🔥!
Daniel T — Google review
Nice play on the “Artistic” plate. Haha 😝 Another top notch service restaurant. Wines were average only. Food was excellent & great, albeit the small portion sizes, especially the Roast Fish at $54, which is really really small in size. Not many prawns in the squid ink linguine too. Oyster were definitely the best we had in Tasmania so far.

I went to Mona for the food :) The Sauce has a lot of taste profile that is different but welcoming to the palette. I had an entree, two mains and a dessert. I want the taste to linger, what is better than 2 mains :) I had the Fruits de Mers for entree, followed by Veno Tonnata for the first main, roast fish for the second main and lemongrass cream for dessert. Highly recommended.

Delicious food that is on the higher end. There wasn’t space at the next door winery and decided to eat here with my family. I don’t regret spending about twice as much as I could have at the winery. The food’s presentation, flavour, taste and everything was perfection. The service was great as well with the staff’s top notch recommendations that goes well with whatever you’re eating. Highly recommended if you don’t mind emptying your wallet.
Keane W — Google review
food quality is excellent. Extremely well balanced food and surprisingly generous portions. Priced on the higher side because of where it is Staff are very knowledgeable, but could be tiny a bit more attentive. The restaurant also could do with a bit more “warmth” and ambience added to it. Very glass box/metal panel vibes

Faro is a unique dining experience that combines food, live performance, and music in a stunning venue. The restaurant offers professional and theatrical dining with melt-in-your-mouth food that features French bistro with a contemporary local twist. The architecture and location of the restaurant are beautiful, making it worth a visit. While bookings are essential, walk-ins might get lucky sometimes. The daily shows at Faro offer different experiences with reinvented performers each time.
An amazing space by the water offering expansive views, wonderful food, great service and even some live theatre. The tasting menu was great value and served up some beautifully presented inventive dishes. The staff were friendly and efficient and the theatre was entertaining. The wine list presented the best examples of Tasmanian product, by the glass, that we have experienced in Hobart.

We had an amazing long lunch at Faro yesterday after spending the morning visiting MONA. High quality produce executed well and plating was beautiful. Stunning views, great ambience, service was friendly, efficient and unpretentious. The entertainment during dinner really made the experience extraordinary - a big thank you to the two very talented entertainers. Highly recommend MONA and dining at Faro.

Renee and I had a fantastic long lunch at Faro. We hadn’t made a booking and the team managed to squeeze us in. Great food whilst surrounded by art. Loved the simple and very interactive art whilst surrounded by amazing architecture.
Saurabh D — Google review
Go for the experience and view. Plating was beautiful, but if you’re here for taste - the food was unfortunately didn’t live up to how it looked, nothing special for high fine dining prices. The appetiser plate was extremely disappointing, banh mi pate was stale with no flavour. The finger was listed as one of the dishes but was just a film of jelly coated around a ceramic finger. I would come just to experience the dances and performances!

BEST MEAL OF MY LIFE!! I had read a few bad reviews so was nervous but thought Faro was amazing and a MUST visit. The staff were great, the hiring process inclusive and diverse!! The cocktails were amazing, the mushroom dish was the best meal I’ve ever eaten! The desserts amazing!!! Thanks Faro! We had a great experience!

Faro is more than a restaurant it’s an experience. Bold, playful dishes like the Gucci oyster and “Eat the Problem” fallow deer push boundaries while still tasting incredible. The matched drinks were perfect, the staff were brilliant, and the desserts were unforgettable. A must-do when visiting MONA 🖤

Had an incredible experience at Faro. Every course was beautifully crafted, with bold and unexpected flavour combinations that really stood out. The staff were warm, attentive, and clearly passionate about what they do, which added to the whole atmosphere. Can’t recommend it highly enough.
