Nestled in the picturesque hills of Haputale, Lipton's Seat is a breathtaking viewpoint that beckons travelers with its stunning 360-degree panoramas. This scenic overlook is not just about the views; it’s also conveniently located near historic tea-producing farms and the renowned Dambatenne Tea Factory, established by Sir Thomas Lipton in 1890. Visitors can embark on an enlightening tour of this factory to learn about the intricate processes involved in tea production, from fermentation to grading.
Lipton Seat is absolutely beautiful and offers an amazing view! I visited from Haputale town for the first time, and the road to get there is one of the most scenic routes I’ve ever traveled. The road has steep climbs, sharp 180-degree bends, and is quite narrow in many places. There are a few small spots where vehicles can pass each other, so you need to be a skilled and patient driver. Some three-wheeler drivers will tell you that the road gets too narrow about 7–8 km from the top and try to convince you to take a tuk-tuk—but if you trust your driving, you can go all the way yourself. I drove a 2017 Panda Cross and had no issues. Even smaller cars like the Wagon R can make it to the top. Only the last 1–1.5 km is a bit rough with some bumpy, stone-covered patches, but it’s still manageable with care. The road winds through beautiful tea gardens and has a calm, peaceful vibe. Some people choose to walk, which is also a great option if you have time. There’s a real sense of serenity here—please help protect the environment while you enjoy it. Definitely worth a visit if you’re traveling to Haputale

This was my second visit to Lipton’s Seat. The road condition has improved compared to before, though there are still some potholes along the way. I took the route from Haputale town — the road is very narrow all the way to the peak, and you need to be a somewhat experienced driver to manage it. Many times, either I or the other driver had to reverse the vehicle to a wider spot to give way, which can be quite tricky. When we arrived, the entire place was covered in mist. We waited for about an hour until it cleared and were rewarded with breathtaking views all around. Some of the photos I’ve shared here are from the Haputale–Lipton’s Seat route, which is just as beautiful as the summit itself. The drive is surrounded by lush tea plantations and historic bungalows from the colonial era, making the journey as memorable as the destination.
Senath W — Google review
Beautiful place. The road is very scenic and one of a kind of experience. I personally advise to park the vehicle outside of the ticket area and walk to lipton’s seat. It’s no more than about 1.3Km and with the views and the trees you wouldn’t even feel the distance. The canteen there is a total ripoff do not buy from there. They over charge you.
Ahamad Y — Google review
Must-Visit in Haputale! Lipton’s Seat is one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in Sri Lanka. From the top, you get panoramic views of endless tea plantations, misty valleys, and mountains stretching far into the distance. Sunrise here is magical—arrive early before the clouds roll in. The journey through the tea estates is as beautiful as the destination itself. A peaceful, refreshing spot full of history and natural beauty. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Haputale!
Lahiru B — Google review
Lipton’s Seat is an amazing place! The view is breathtaking, especially when the clouds start to move around the hills. Most of the time, the location is cloudy, which makes it feel peaceful and magical. The road from Haputale to Lipton’s Seat is in great condition and very scenic. It’s located in the middle of the beautiful Dambethenna Tea Estate, surrounded by endless green tea fields. One of the most beautiful and memorable places I’ve ever visited!
Pramuditha B — Google review
Amazing place to visit early in the morning. The roads are carpeted recently and was a smooth drive from Haputale. You can park at Dambatanne and take a tuk tuk for Rs.1,500 (return journey) as the road beyond that point is really narrow (circa 7km). However, a van can go upto the viewing point.
Jehan M — Google review
Situated an hour away from Haputale town. It is a viewpoint with green mountains, tea gardens. And it has small vehicle parking space and small tea shop. You can eat Rotii, wade with hot tea from that place. Reaching road is narrow and going through beautiful tea gardens. Suggested road is Haputale - Lipton seat road.
Pulasthi B — Google review
Lipton’s Seat is one of those rare places where you wonder if your camera will ever do justice to what your eyes are seeing. The views are truly breathtaking, with rolling hills covered in tea plantations stretching endlessly in every direction. Getting there isn’t exactly a casual stroll. The road is winding, narrow, and slow, but once you reach the top, you forget every bump and honk along the way. There’s a small café where you can sip tea while staring at what looks like a living postcard. If you’re in Sri Lanka and skip Lipton’s Seat, you’ll regret it the next time someone shows you their photos from here. It’s not just a viewpoint, it’s the kind of place that sticks with you long after you leave.

Prabhawa Mountain Day View Point in Sri Lanka is a popular destination for travelers, offering a rocky path that leads to the top of Haputale Mountain. At 1,750 meters above sea level, visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of Haputale town, forests, the railroad, and the mountain range extending to Horton Plains and Pidurutalagala.
Beautiful walk through the forest and rice fields. Start behind the post office, Used maps.me for better direction. Walked on my own.

Beautiful walk through tea fields with stunning views of the scenery below. The jungle on the hill was not well marked and so I quickly got very lost, but still well worth a visit. Fortunately part of the Pekoe trail runs through it.

Infamous but yet a beautiful view point in Haputle.Haputale and Idalgashinna area can be seen from here. Road to here leads from Sherwood( A division of Haputale Estate). It is quiet hard to find the road. There are no tour guides in this area so be sure to find the correct road or otherwise you will be lost.

On the top of Haputale Peak is a Hindu Kovil, an old temple of the tea estate workers, called Surungamuni Kovil. Hindus use to come here to celebrate cultural festivals. Hikers come here to enjoy the great view over Haputale town, forest, the railroad and the mountain range via Idalgashinna up to Horton Plains and to the highest mountain Pidurutalagala. Nearby in the ticket is a cave used for cultural ceremonies. You need a climbing gear or ladder 🪜 to get down. Inside are some names and initials scratched in the walls. Beware of climbing around in the thicket, especially onto of the cave. There are several deep holes 🕳. I love this place and great roundview. Everyone interested in hiking and followers of the Pekoe Trail Stage 13 should visit this place.

Tea manufacturer
Nestled in the picturesque town of Haputale, the Kelliebedde Tea Factory is a must-visit for anyone intrigued by Sri Lanka's renowned tea culture. This operational factory offers an immersive experience where visitors can observe traditional tea processing techniques firsthand, from the plucking of fresh leaves to the final brewing stages. Guided tours last around 20 minutes and provide insightful commentary on each step of production, enhancing your understanding and appreciation of this beloved beverage.
We went on a brilliant tour today - it cost 1000 rupees per person and was short but a brilliant insight into the making of tea. We had a great time. The cafe linked to the factory is also great
Jack L — Google review
Nice, short tour showing all the steps from growing the leaves, drying, fermenting, cutting, sorting, shipping to the auction. Tea tasting at the end was a nice way to conclude. Highly recommended. We were there on Monday, which apparently is their maintenance day (or all days are maintenance days :-)), but still all machines were turned on to show how they work. 1000 rupees per person, kids free.

(Translated by Google) A nice experience and in my opinion it is worth visiting one of the tea factories while in Sri Lanka. You should ask the guard at the booth about the tour and the guard will call the guide. The trip lasted about 20 minutes, during which the guide told us about the entire tea production process and showed us the subsequent stages. The factory operated normally at that time. At the end there was a small tasting. We paid 3000 rupees for 3 people. (Original) Fajne doświadczenie i moim zdaniem warto odwiedzić jedną z fabryk herbaty będąc na Sri Lance. Należy zapytać się w budce strażnika o wycieczkę i strażnik zawoła przewodnika. Wycieczka trwała ok 20 minut, podczas której przewodnik opowiedział nam o całym procesie produkcji herbaty i pokazał kolejne etapy. Fabryka w tym czasie normalnie pracowała. Na koniec odbyla się mała degustacja. Zapłaciliśmy 3000 rupi za 3 osoby.

St. Andrew's Church is an Anglican church in Haputale, Badulla District, Sri Lanka. This small Neo-gothic church is located on the A16 road (Beragala - Hali Ela road). It is one of the oldest buildings in Haputale and one of the oldest European buildings in the district. The foundation stone was laid on 7 April 1869 by Lieutenant General Hodgson and it was consecrated for worship on 19 September 1869.It was built by James Andrews, who worked at Sherwood Estate, and Richard Wylie, from Pita Ratmale Estate. The first services were conducted by Rev. Joseph Barnett, co-pastor of Middlington. Doors are open for every one.

Anglican church in Haputale and one of the oldest European buildings in the district as per the sources. The church is functioning and there are many cemeteries around the place. Its good if the church administers can add some more information relevant to the church. Or if you want to know more info better to meet the father of the church. When I was there, the father I saw speaks Tamil but I'm sure he knows Sinhala and English as well.
Rashie W — Google review
Visited this church on a weekend. Was not sure if the church would be open. But the caretaker of the church Mr. Sam was in the premises who warmly welcomed us into the church. He showed us around inside and outside the church. Gave us a full detailed history of the small and peaceful Anglican church. Was happy and blessed to visit this holy place. 🤗🙏 It's one of the oldest buildings in Haputale.

I usually amazed by the historically vital places. This is a great location for someone who loves the past. The spacious interior with large windows provides a relaxed environment to enjoy tea, cakes, and snacks at reasonable prices. Visitors can unwind, catch up on emails, and take in the picturesque scenery while savoring delicious meals. The friendly staff adds to the warm hospitality experienced at this charming establishment.
I recently visited this restaurant and had a pleasant experience overall. The customer service was excellent—staff were friendly, attentive, and made sure we were comfortable throughout our meal. The serving portions were generous and well-presented. The food was good, though not exceptional; it was tasty but didn’t quite stand out as something memorable. Still, the great service and overall atmosphere made it a nice place to dine. I would recommend it if you’re looking for a comfortable spot with reliable food and excellent service.

I recently visited lettuce and cabbage cafe and I was genuinely impressed by the quality of service. From the moment I walked in, the staff was welcoming, attentive, and professional. They made sure we were comfortable, explained the menu clearly, and checked in just the right amount—not too often, not too little. The food arrived promptly and was served with care. What really stood out was how the staff handled special requests without any hassle. It’s clear that customer satisfaction is a priority here. Overall, the service played a big part in making the meal enjoyable. I’d definitely recommend lettuce and cabbage cafe is not just for the food, but for the warm and efficient service

Don’t go this place ❌ Never Recommended 🚫 Yesterday we went here with my family for lunch. The table was not properly cleaned after going. We were given the menu. We had to wait a while for someone to come to take our order. We ordered choupsey rice. The potion for each person was Rs.1650. It took more than One hour to prepare for dishes and bring them I would have thought it would be OK if there was a dish that I could eat. I have never seen topsy rice like this in my lifetime. The Chopsey was very yellow color when I saw it I thought it was a mess. The pieces of squid was a big as a jackfruit. I couldn’t even find out what kind of vegetables there were. It was too much yellow. I couldn’t eat it at all when I ate even a little bit I got a stomachache. Really after spending this much money, they should give a proper meal to a person. If anyone wants to eat here, don’t go.

Visited this week and were disappointed to see the current state of affairs, probably after change in management (to Olive's). It's become a bar & restaurant, now unsuitable for families with kids and young female solo travellers. So downgrading my five-star rating. Previous review and photos (from about 5 years ago) - Excellent place to have meals and chill out in Haputale. Located centrally in the town. Fresh and tasty food. Reasonable prices. Highly recommended for all local and foreign tourists.

AMAZING! The subtle art of cooking is all about preparing simple dishes to perfection… We arrived late so all we could order was fried rice (chicken or veggie) and OMG! Very friendly host, delicious tea (loose, no teabags). Apparently we chose the "wrong" dishes on the menu which simply were not tasty. Fried seer fish (on the pic with the the chips) was tough, chips were so hard you could barely eat it with a fork. Vegetable noodles were plain and flavorless. I'm sure the rest of the food is more delicious. Clean and spacious bathroom!
