Lipton Seat is absolutely beautiful and offers an amazing view! I visited from Haputale town for the first time, and the road to get there is one of the most scenic routes I’ve ever traveled. The road has steep climbs, sharp 180-degree bends, and is quite narrow in many places. There are a few small spots where vehicles can pass each other, so you need to be a skilled and patient driver. Some three-wheeler drivers will tell you that the road gets too narrow about 7–8 km from the top and try to convince you to take a tuk-tuk—but if you trust your driving, you can go all the way yourself. I drove a 2017 Panda Cross and had no issues. Even smaller cars like the Wagon R can make it to the top. Only the last 1–1.5 km is a bit rough with some bumpy, stone-covered patches, but it’s still manageable with care. The road winds through beautiful tea gardens and has a calm, peaceful vibe. Some people choose to walk, which is also a great option if you have time. There’s a real sense of serenity here—please help protect the environment while you enjoy it. Definitely worth a visit if you’re traveling to Haputale
This was my second visit to Lipton’s Seat. The road condition has improved compared to before, though there are still some potholes along the way. I took the route from Haputale town — the road is very narrow all the way to the peak, and you need to be a somewhat experienced driver to manage it. Many times, either I or the other driver had to reverse the vehicle to a wider spot to give way, which can be quite tricky. When we arrived, the entire place was covered in mist. We waited for about an hour until it cleared and were rewarded with breathtaking views all around. Some of the photos I’ve shared here are from the Haputale–Lipton’s Seat route, which is just as beautiful as the summit itself. The drive is surrounded by lush tea plantations and historic bungalows from the colonial era, making the journey as memorable as the destination.
Beautiful place. The road is very scenic and one of a kind of experience. I personally advise to park the vehicle outside of the ticket area and walk to lipton’s seat. It’s no more than about 1.3Km and with the views and the trees you wouldn’t even feel the distance. The canteen there is a total ripoff do not buy from there. They over charge you.
Must-Visit in Haputale! Lipton’s Seat is one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in Sri Lanka. From the top, you get panoramic views of endless tea plantations, misty valleys, and mountains stretching far into the distance. Sunrise here is magical—arrive early before the clouds roll in. The journey through the tea estates is as beautiful as the destination itself. A peaceful, refreshing spot full of history and natural beauty. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Haputale!
Lipton’s Seat is an amazing place! The view is breathtaking, especially when the clouds start to move around the hills. Most of the time, the location is cloudy, which makes it feel peaceful and magical. The road from Haputale to Lipton’s Seat is in great condition and very scenic. It’s located in the middle of the beautiful Dambethenna Tea Estate, surrounded by endless green tea fields. One of the most beautiful and memorable places I’ve ever visited!
Amazing place to visit early in the morning. The roads are carpeted recently and was a smooth drive from Haputale. You can park at Dambatanne and take a tuk tuk for Rs.1,500 (return journey) as the road beyond that point is really narrow (circa 7km). However, a van can go upto the viewing point.
Situated an hour away from Haputale town. It is a viewpoint with green mountains, tea gardens. And it has small vehicle parking space and small tea shop. You can eat Rotii, wade with hot tea from that place. Reaching road is narrow and going through beautiful tea gardens. Suggested road is Haputale - Lipton seat road.
Lipton’s Seat is one of those rare places where you wonder if your camera will ever do justice to what your eyes are seeing. The views are truly breathtaking, with rolling hills covered in tea plantations stretching endlessly in every direction. Getting there isn’t exactly a casual stroll. The road is winding, narrow, and slow, but once you reach the top, you forget every bump and honk along the way. There’s a small café where you can sip tea while staring at what looks like a living postcard. If you’re in Sri Lanka and skip Lipton’s Seat, you’ll regret it the next time someone shows you their photos from here. It’s not just a viewpoint, it’s the kind of place that sticks with you long after you leave.

We had the opportunity to go on a tour of the whole factory and go through the different production processes, the guide was nice and answered all the curious questions. After the tour we had the opportunity to buy their tea at affordable prices.
The Dambatenne Tea Factory has a wooden plaque in their office which summaries the history of this factory which has a special place in the annals of the tea industry of Sri Lanka. This factory was built by Sir Thomas Lipton, himself in 1890, with a built-up area of almost 20,000 sq ft. The Dambatenne Estate and the factory are now managed by Lankem and very well maintained. We were ably guided around the factory by an executive and had the pleasure of tasting different flavours of their tea. No photography or video are allowed inside the factory. And you need to get your shoes covered before you enter the factory floor. The time taken from receiving the plucked green leaf, drying, processing and final packing in 50 kg bags ready for the Colombo Tea Auction is just 48 hours. It was an informative experience and the smell of freshly processed tea was invigorating. BOP and BOPF packets are available for sale. They also process the Silver Tips variety of non fermented, sun-dried tea white tea priced at LKR 80,000 a kilo.
What a huge let down. Not with the factory but the reviewers here on Google because the tour was infinitely better than what many people have shared and reviewed. I came to a working tea factory, in a foreign country, to see them making tea. I paid, walked through and listened and engaged with well spoken and friendly tour guide. I tasted tea. Even purchased some at the end. Some of the staff said hello, others were busy and probably felt that it’s not in their job descriptions to talk to every tourist who wants to see how their English Breakfast is made. The machines made noise, so I listened more intently in those rooms. We waited to begin the tour, having been asked kindly to do so until the guide was ready and the kettle boiled. At the end, they packed fresh tea for me and I also waited while they did that. So if you are expecting a factory that is like a musical number in a Broadway show, perhaps give it a miss. If you are expecting a working factory in the Sri Lankan tea country, then pop in. It’s very interesting.
Interesting, informative tour. Unfortunately no tea tasting. I would have loved this. Tea tasting area but not for me. I asked. It seems from other reviews that it’s pot luck or maybe size of group who gets a tea tasting and who is allowed to take photos. Neither for me
We had the opportunity to visit the Dambethenna Tea Factory, which, as our guide Chaminda informed us, is Sri Lanka's oldest tea factory. Chaminda was very knowledgeable and experienced, providing great insights into the tea-making process and the history of the factory. We visited on a working day (Saturday) around 3 PM, but unfortunately, most of the daily operations had already finished by that time. However, Chaminda and the team were kind enough to start a few machines for a short time to give us a glimpse of how the equipment operates, explaining the process in detail. If you plan to visit, I’d recommend going in the morning when the factory is in full operation, as the workday starts early. Pricing: The ticket price was 500 LKR per local adult, which we found reasonable for the experience. You can also purchase various grades of tea directly from the factory, including types that are typically not available in Sri Lankan supermarkets. They offer BOP, OP, PEKOE, BOPF, and more. We bought 500g of BOP grade tea for 1000 LKR, which was a great purchase.
After reading some reviews we were hesitant to go to the Dambatenne Tea Factory, but we were pleasantly surprised! Our guide was very knowledgeable and we saw the inside of the factory with every step of the process in tea production. It was amazing to learn how tea is made from the leaves to the bags and see the workers do this first hand. The guide answered all of our questions and we even had a small tasting at the end of the tour. Would highly recommend to go here!
Contrary to some recent reviews here on google maps, I visited the factory today and had a great visiting experience. We were allowed to photograph, the guide had an extensive 40+ year career in tea factories in Sri Lanka and he not only answered all our questions, but I genuinely learned a lot of the process despite being an avid tea drinker. The factory had an ongoing work shift and all employees were extremely hard working, all of us guests and employees had protective masks/gear on. Before the visit, we read some comments about a "touchy" guide, but at least based on our group's experience, there was no disturbing behaviour seen. Perhaps we were lucky to have an exceptional tour, but I strongly believe the 1 star ratings are not indicative of the reality. The tour did not include a tasting. But the factory is more B2B focused on their production (their standard package size is 58 kg). I did not feel a need for a tea tasting as part of the tour as you can visit any good tea shop in the region to purchase your tea and book a separate tasting. Note, this is only based on our personal experience from today, but I hope the factory will continue this type of tour for future guests also =)
This is an attractive tour, guide will explain you every part of process, its worth of spending LKR 250 ( less than 2 dollars)to get a Proper knowledge of black tea process .Visitors can buy various type of tea products for a reasonable price BOP, BOPF, SILVER TIPS,GOLDEN TIPS,GREEN TEA & G&T Just 7km drive to Lipton seat from factory through beautiful tea fields. Simply its worth Longest factory in SRILANKA Super quality tea products available here
