The National Trust Shugborough Estate, located near Stafford, offers a diverse experience for visitors. With 900 acres of parkland and a historic mansion filled with treasures, it provides an escape into nature and history. The estate features a working Victorian farm, Georgian farm, dairy & mill, and restored walled garden. Costumed living history characters bring the past to life as they share stories from different eras.
This place is absolutely massive! There are so many different areas to explore. After parking, we started our adventure at the Walled Garden. At the time, half the garden was under renovation, but what was left looked absolutely stunning. Next, we headed to Park Farm, which is mainly a refreshment area and toilets. But there are a few interesting things to see here, like the “Tower of the Winds.” It’s a must-see! After that, we walked over to the “Mansion.” First, we went to the servant’s quarters, and then we went inside, which was like stepping back in time. After we then went into the Mansion, being greeted by a very friendly gentleman. I loved the upper levels of the mansion. They had so much history about the Anson family, especially Patrick Anson’s work in photography. It was fascinating! Finally, we relaxed in the lawns near the river before heading back to the car, passing by the boathouse on the way. It was a wonderful day out!

Had a fantastic day here. Two cafes with great food, ice creams and drinks. Toilets were clean. The house was quiet and easy to walk through everyone was helpful and informative. The grounds were stunning and lots to see. Great accessibility. Lots for kids to do, the house had kid friendly activities but also lots of parks and outside spaces for children. Promoting inclusivity and that seems to been something they are working hard to promote which is fantastic to see. Great walks for people and dog friendly also, even some doggy ice creams.

I must first say that this is one of the best National Trust properties we have visited and we have been members from over 20 years. The grounds and gardens are beautiful, with many interesting cows and sheep to look at. The farmyard was lovely and the café was outstanding. The service was brilliant and the food was so tasty. The Mansion was excellent and it was amazing looking at Lord Patrick Litchfield's apartments. The cafe near the mansion was also very good. All in all my wife and myself had a lovely day.

This is a jewel amongst the National Trust's historic houses. It's surrounded by a huge area of parkland and has a working farm to explore as well as the house and servants' quarters. We visited on a warm day when they had extra activities and games available for the kids to play which was appreciated. There is more than enough to fill a day here if you choose to do a walk around the estate too. The car park is quite a walk from the main house, however there is a small shuttle which you can use if needed.
Tim J — Google review
We visited recently, May bank holiday, only to find the estate was closed due to bad weather. Unfortunately, there was no notice on their website about the closure, which was disappointing—not just for us, but for many others who had turned up as well. That said, we were still able to enjoy a lovely walk through the park. Despite some overcast spells, the weather held up nicely, and the grounds were beautiful. The park is expansive, with scenic canal crossings and plenty of space to explore. Just a heads-up to check ahead before visiting
Kamal S — Google review
Revisited after probably about 20 years and have to admit I was a little disappointed and underwhelmed this time around. Very little to see inside the mansion these days and the whole place seems to be geared up to entertain kids. The farm with mill wheel used to have so much more going on and better access. Sad because we had some great memories of visiting here in the past. The highlight was leaving and heading out over Essex bridge to the Anglo Welsh boatyard at Great Haywood.

This is a lovely place to visit with 2 cafes. The visitor shop was lovely and the grounds well kept. I visited on foot whilst out exploring

Shugborough Hall, located in Milford near Stafford, is a historic working estate under the care of the National Trust. The property offers plenty to do, including a 15-minute walk from the car park to the main house. Visitors can explore the well-maintained gardens, children's play area, and farm area before reaching the picturesque mansion. Additionally, there are opportunities for scenic walks through the extensive grounds that extend down to Essex Bridge and along the canal to Great Haywood cliffs.
A wonderful afternoon out at Shugborough Hall, so much to see and do. As it’s the summer holidays they had more fun and games for children too! Plenty of parking and the usual National Trust facilities including a cafe. The house is interesting to look round, with the downstairs telling the story of George and Thomas Anson, while the upstairs houses the preserved apartment of the Patrick Lichfield the famous royal photographer. The gardens and grounds are big enough to keep you busy for a few hours and the flower gardens at amazing.

Shugborough Hall is a place well worth a visit. It is a National Trust site located in a large estate in rural Staffordshire. There is plenty to see and do for Adults and children alike. On a nice day there are some very pleasant walks that you can do, as well as visit the house. There is a gift shop, toilets and tea room/restaurant close by. The Hall and all of its history is quite fascinating. As I like my photography I loved seeing some of Lord Lichfield's cameras and equipment, as well as the many photographs mounted on the walls. Some are of famous faces that you will recognise, and some of the Royal Family over various years. There are also events put on throughout the year. I have visited twice in December to see the spectacular display of Christmas Trees. They differ every year, and sometimes follow a theme. They also put on a light show display in December. I haven't seen this yet, but do plan on it this year. I have heard it is very impressive.

Wonderful national trust free entry day. Blessed with fine sunshine. Greeted by 2 very helpful members who explained the map. Added onto planned guided visit to new garden at 2pm. This proved really good with the gardener being very interesting. Volunteers in house brilliant, informative and friendly despite impromptu fire alarm, they were unflappable. Beautiful grounds, gardens and all with our rescue dog Maddie. (She stayed in the car whilst we went inside house). Just had such a lovely relaxing day. Thank you 😊

Lovely day out at Shugborough - the staff are 10/10 and gave brilliant service. The gentleman and lady upstairs in Patrick Lichfield’s apartments on Saturday were brilliant, friendly and knowledgeable and great help. The girl working the ice cream counter near the mansion tea room (but not inside the tea room) was amazing, really helped us with our intolerance while ordering an ice cream, super friendly to all customers in front of us and gave exceptional service to us with our celiac dietary needs. It’s a shame a lot of Shugborough has shut since the national trust took ownership, but still has lovely grounds on a sunny day.

Shugborough is simply beautiful whether you're visiting the house or just walking the grounds. Me and my fiance visit often as we just love walking our dog through the grounds and picking up a coffee at the tea room. Very friendly staff upon entry, plenty of info boards explaining future plans, the house is gorgeous inside and out with lots to see. Staff and volunteers are very knowledgeable with the history of the the house. It's just a fab place to visit.

First visit today and what a fantastic place! We decided to join as family members and it was well worth it. The grounds, gardens and mansion are all beautifully kept — full of history and charm. The tea rooms were excellent too, perfect stop for an autumn treat. Even during October half term it never felt crowded; plenty of parking and so much space to explore that you’d hardly notice how busy it actually was. A brilliant family day out — we’ll definitely be back! – O’Toole UK | Keeping it real, one visit at a time.

Had a wonderful day, strolling around the gardens and small walk plus a joy to hear so much history from the volunteers in the hall. The cafe was reasonably priced with good food and coffee.

Great Haywood Junction

Historical landmark
Great Haywood Junction is a picturesque spot where the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal intersects with the Trent & Mersey Canal. The junction features a charming cobbled bridge, which holds the distinction of being one of the most photographed on the entire canal network and is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The Trent and Mersey Canal, envisioned as a vital link between Liverpool and Hull via the Potteries, was authorized by an Act of Parliament in 1766.
The Trent and Mersey Canal was conceived as a way to provide a link between Liverpool and Hull, passing through the Potteries. It was authorised by an Act of Parliament in 1766, and with James Brindley acting as engineer, its 93 miles (150 km) were completed eleven years later in 1777. Brindley also built the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, which was begun at much the same time as the Trent and Mersey, and was completed in 1772. It joined the Trent and Mersey Canal at Great Haywood, and was part of his Grand Cross plan to link four English estuaries: the Humber, Thames, Seven and Mersey. Haywood Junction therefore became a major transport interchange.

Canalside Farm is a delightful destination where visitors can partake in the enjoyable activity of pumpkin picking. The farm offers an impressive array of pumpkins, found in numerous fields and available in various shapes, sizes, and even colors. Additionally, patrons can indulge in delicious and reasonably priced food at the café, along with a comforting cup of hot coffee—a perfect treat for cool autumn evenings. This attraction is highly recommended for individuals of all ages seeking an exciting pumpkin picking experience.
Me and my partner love this place. The range of fruit and vegetables is amazing. They also have a butchers who has a great variety of meats from pork joints to beef steaks and their sausages are amazing and packed with lots of flavour. They also have an amazing variety of freshly baked breads that are baked in store and a huge variety of freshly baked cakes and pastries. Their deli counter has a variety of samosas and pasta bowls and my favourite Mediterranean Bruschetta. Their Cheese counter also has a variety of different cheeses from around the local area as well as from around the world. I would 100% recommend going to this place as they also have a pick your own fruit which I'm yet to go and do in the next few weeks.

We had a birthday celebration afternoon tea today at The canal Farm cafe. I have to say it's one of the nicest ones I've had. Sandwiches, pastries, cakes and a huge scone was included along with 2 drinks of your choice from the hot drinks menu. To top off the amazing afternoon tea we had Amelia serving us. What an amazing member of staff she is, she had a smile on her face from the moment she welcomed us in and sat us at our table, nothing was too much trouble. Amelia was so attentive and whatever was asked of her she did it with a can do, smiley attitude, a credit to her collegues and the cafe 👍

My first stop was the cafe to taste the breakfast which was on the higher price end but definitely worth it, golden yolk perfectly good eggs, a good portion for the full English breakfast, the coffee was lovely and the carrot and chocolate fudge cake was to die for, moist but most importantly well balanced and not too sweet! The farm shop was well stocked up with loads of home baked goodies to choose from.
Igor J — Google review
Great afternoon at the cafe for lunch. Then, a fun time picking strawberries behind the cafe. Lovely outdoor seating to watch the canal boats go by! Only drawback is parking when it's so busy!
Mel A — Google review
Very high-quality products from the café to the farm shop good cake & coffee 1 lady working in cafe she’s so helpful and friendly. It’s a joy to go there. No complaints about the farm shop always helpful good butchers good bakers
Boo — Google review
Canalside Farm is my favorite destination for strawberry picking. There are several types of strawberries planted so the picking season streches through 6-8 weeks or so, as the different types ripen one after another. They are looked after with very high level of professionalism. The strawberries are delicious, juicy, melt in the mouth. There are also raspberries, but I'm not so keen on them. The Farm has a farm shop also, a nursery, coffee and icecream shop that is very popular. I always buy fresly made cakes, shortbread as my partner loves those. Fruit and veg selection also excellent, not to mention the butcher and cheese corner. The quality is outstanding! You better check this out yourself, if you are in the area. Enjoy!

Nestled in the charming village of Great Haywood, the Clifford Arms is a delightful pub that serves as a perfect retreat after a day spent exploring the scenic waterside walks along the Trent and Mersey Canal. Just a stone's throw away from the stunning Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this welcoming establishment is particularly pet-friendly, making it an ideal stop for dog owners.
What an absolute gem of a Pub stunning food, a very good range of beer "Butty Bach" very tasty. And reasonably priced.

The food here was really lovely. Nicely presented and delicious. The garlic bread was probably the nicest Ive had eating out! My son had the gammon- which was spot on- I had the lasagne. This is a very friendly pub near the canal junction for Staffs/Worcs & Trent & Mersey Canal I live on a boat - so just passing through, but It was a real treat to be able to stop and have a down to earth, good quality pub meal, without breaking the bank. 🙂🙂🙂

Went here for a last minute meal. Didn't have to book. Wasn't too busy, friendly staff, nice layout, clean toilets, quite cheap! We had the burger which was amazing value for money at only 7 quid and it comes with chips and salad and it was AMAZING, one of the best burgers we have ever had! So, meal for 2 and 2 drinks each was about 30 quid so we were very pleased. Would definitely return and highly recommend.

Lovely pub in a fantastic location. Great choice of popular cask ales and brilliant if you bring your dog along. close to Shugborough and walks along the canal. Even a spot for kids and dogs to take a dip in the river.

Such a good find. Really friendly pub with extensive menu and couldn’t be more dog friendly. They even brought some roast beef out for our doggos. We had ploughman’s and a beef sandwich both were very generous portions. My husband said it was the best roast beef he’s ever had (I’m not taking offence!) Highly recommend. We’ll definitely be back on our return journey.

Clifford is a two minute walk from my house so not only convenient but also such a nice pub, everyone in there is so lovely especially the owner (Or who we assume is the owner). Always greets me and my partner and is overall such a lovely man. We enjoy going on the weekends before a night out as they always have lovely and reasonably priced drinks. When they close at 12am they are always polite when asking people to leave as they are closing. Ive eaten here in the past and the food has always been amazing. 100% reccomend. Thanks!

Nice place for a drink with friendly locals, recommended.

Up from London to collect our new caravan and had a short wait so walked down to the Clifford Arms for a drink and something quick to eat. Sat in the garden area with our dogs, was served immediately by friendly staff and the chips i ordered almost beat me back to the table! My favourite part was the value for money, given I live in London I'm used to paying £6+ for a pint. A lager, large Coke and some chips was £11.50 - fantastic value for money. If we are ever here again we shall be sure to revisit.
